Politicizing Priyantha Kumara & The Collapse Of Our Rule Of Law!

By Asoka Seneviratne

Asoka Seneviratne

The universal fact about all politicians is their crooked attempt to try and turn any situation to their political advantage. The situation in Sri Lanka about late Mr. Priyantha Kumara is a classic example. Hordes of politicians ranging from party leaders, the speaker, opposition leader and the lot kept disturbing the final rites of the late engineer, dressed in crisp white, expressing bogus sadness and the worse, many using transport paid for by the Lankan people who have fallen from fireplace to the burning charcoal pit due to the damage these crooks have done to our county’s economy.

But do any of these people truly care a damn about Mr. Kumara or his family? The majority of them thrived on fooling, cheating on, violating the laws and worse helping to drive our once reasonably prosperous land into the ditch. As if that was not enough , those the Rajapaksa camp even legislated the dangerous 20th amendment thus flushing away the vital checks and balances, due process, rule of law , accountability and people’s dignity down the toilet.

Line up all the convicts in our jails and see how many come from wealthy, well connected or political families. None. So much about the justness of our justice system!!!! Only the poor go to jail!

The members of this ruling/opposition club have been fooling the masses for decades. They lied, they cheated, they robbed, they got bribed and yes they covered each other’s rear end to make sure nobody goes to jail. They interfered into law enforcement, interfered into the justice apparatus, and protected the drug lords, smugglers and criminals. Money and power was the main factor.

Now there is one difference. Some may have been handicapped or scared to speak out fearing reprisals from party big wigs. Who would dare to challenge or object to any Rajapaksa or Ranil and get kicked out, worse get thrown in jail.

Heard of a brave man called Ranjan Ramanayake?

Let me refresh our minds about known high profile cases that went nowhere. There are hundred more of course possible unknown to us.

The wretched son of Mervin (Vermin) Perera who was involved in a Colombo brawl. No jail or fine. The same vermin minister who tied a local office bearer to jail in public. No jail or fine. Murder of rugger played Thjudeen. Nobody was punished. Killing of Lsanth Wickrematunge. Nobody was punished. White van abductions. Nobody was punished. Disappearance of Prageeth Ekneligoda. Nobody was punished. Payment to US lobbyist Zubberi (now in US jail) of 4 M dollars by then CB governor. Nobody went to jail. Foolish purchase of Greek junk bonds in 2012 by the same governor costing the public 2.14 B rupees. Nobody was punished. Carlton Sports Network by a Rajapaksa, where the millions came from? Nobody was punished. Hedge fund fraud by the CB governor in 2007. Nobody was punished. CB bond scam under Ranil. Nobody was punished. MP’s who got bribed by these CB bonds crooks – perpetual treasuries -including the then Finance Minister who bartered a luxury home in Kollupitiya. Nobody went to jail. Ranil blocking Sirisena’s efforts to bring the then CB governor to justice. Nobody was punished. Recent sugar scam costing billion to Lankan people directly and more billions to the treasury. Nobody was punished. Devprivation of basic fertfilizer to farmers. And destroying their small livelihoods,   nobody took responsivity. Useless Mattala Airport and port mess costing billions. Nobody took responsibility. Release of millions of dollars via BOC to a few quack investors to buy nitrogen fertilizer on the orders of a government big shot. Nobody was punished. Cooking gas explosion disaster. Nobody has been charged or fined so far. The luni and arrogant prisons minister who threatened a Tamil inmate at gun point while heavily intoxicated. Nobody has been even charged yet. He continues to be a minister. The Malwana mansion claimed to belong to Basil .Nobody was punished. Nirupama Rajapaksa’s husband hiding 150 m dollars that was exposed in Pandora papers. Nobody has been even charged yet. The former US ambassador to USA, Jaliya pocketing some $200000.00 when purchasing the new SL embassy building in Washington DC. The Mihin Air crook and buddy of MR, Sajin Vaas was accused of massive fraud. No punishment or even prosecution. The millions bribes paid to Rajapaksa campaign in 2014 by Port City Corporation. No case exists. Release of a drug smuggler minister whose home was surrounded by STF but chased away by a very bid elected shot. No case filed.

There are dozens and dozens more cases of high profile criminal cases and financial fraud cases that just disappeared from docket.

How and why? Where the heck is our rule of law and equal justice under the law. Nah. These provisions in our constitution are just hogwash. The big boys in power decide our justice or lack of it.

Thank you Mr. Ranjan Ramanayake. You are a hero. You were brave. You exposed drug lords sitting in our parliament with the blessings of top dogs. You paid dearly. They threw you in the slammer for 4 years. Do not worry sir. Your Nelson Mandela day will come. The system that threw you in jail is fast becoming extinct and on self-destruction. The 6.9 million fools have disappeared into hiding. Not their fault. They were sold a lie and they bought it. Now licking series wounds!!

In my humble opinion. No matter who comes to power including the JVP is not the final solution. The final solution is to restore our Democracy through a wise constitution with proper and smart checks and balances that restores the true separation of powers between executive, judicial and legislative. Politicians in USA, Britain or Germany are not less corrupt than ours. They will rob if the chance arises. The difference is that their constitutions are smart. They have enough safeguards built in to protect their democracies and people. No matter how big you are, if you break the law, you will go to jail. Period!

Don’t believe me. Just Google how many US politicians at all levels are in jail or been in jail. Dozens. Now why is it that no politician of any grade is in jail in SL? Because our JRJ backed by 20th Amendment constitution is stupid, designed by a bunch of fools, JRJ and Rajapaksas included.

Asoka Seneviratne I agree. The entire political class is one corrupt family.
The upholders of Buddhist religion are also corrupted by the Rajapaksa’s. There are you tube videos of drunken Buddhist monks screaming in unprintable foul language and attacking general public The police looks on pleading with them afraid to arrest them
    ===
The entire Bond Scam culprits were released today surely on the nod of Gota/Mahinda.
Apparently Namal is the 14th richest politician in Asia. How?
Rajapaksas have enough money to buy the entire Sri Lanka.
    ===
so where is the revolution going to come from. The country is polarised Tamils, Muslims, Sinhala no trust between the communities. due corrupt Muslim and Tamil politicians.

so where is this going to end?

Does the Sinhala people now regret the demise of the LTTE

Dear Mr Seneviratne, thank for your article.
      .
Not Mervin Perera but he is mlechcha MERVIN SILVA, whose title came in to being, through mlechcha media repeatedly called ” Dr Mervin Silva”.
This man s role was that of Thisskuttiarachchia and Miriskudu man in Kelaniya area, with known sources say, they lack of basic school education.

We dont want to bring any good example, but about PSEDUO MONK- THUG IN UNDERCOVER; GHANASARA the manner how he addresses his fellow monks in public today say it all – but his position is to advise President Gota whose election came into being through total ignorants of this country.
      :
May curse be with MEDIA MAFIA and MEDAMULANA racals. They should be punisehd by god, if exists, with an effect of ” domino” so that the people s angers could comfort to some extent. They today cant settle small issues such as ” DOMESTIC GAS SYLINDER BLAST ” letalone talk high about their PALPABLE changes. Gotabaya and premier MR should be punished for the speedy mess created by their incapabilities. This time of next month, there will be a catastrophic situation this country being totally fallen to the levels of GREECE whose state was few years ago. Nobody such as EU would be there to save the nation.

Mr.Seneviratna is right. Mr Priyantha Kumara and his family deserve our sympathy for the brutal way he was murdered. Their privacy, ironically, was violated by the very people who express lachrymose sympathy, by the act of sharing gruesome videos.
Now, did any of these politicians turn up at the funerals of many humble workers who died in the Middle East? Did the government give compensation to those who were stranded there without food or shelter? Didn’t this very government refuse to take back these workers even when those states offered free transport? Then why all this hoo-ha? I suspect it’s only a ghoulish plot to gain political points.

Hats off to you Asoka Seneviratna for identifying the root cause of this mess, the presidential constitution. At the next election we should promote a candidate who is prepared to place his signature to a sworn affidavit that he will revert to the former system of governance.

As a Sinhalese I have to accept some shame on any atrocities committed on our Tamil community during the war.

But when it comes to LTTE , I have a dilemma. Because Prabhakaran was a cold blooded killer. He not only executed innocent Sinhalese but Tamil political / militia leaders too. He executed Rajiv, Premadasa and a many more. Not that I put a higher price tag on these leaders more than an average person.

So I try to keep away from this very sensitive issue for both communities.

Rajash, while I agree with the rest of what you’ve said, I strongly disagree with the last sentence. I do not think there is any Sinhalese who regret the demise of LTTE, even some Tamils would not regret it I suppose. Whether done by Tamils or Sinhalese, terrorism is terrorism!

Mr. Aska Seneviratne: Thank you for a very candid explanation of the “Crooks” of all “Shades” who have ruled this country for seven decades. You quoted Ranjan Ramanayake. No doubt he was a “Whistle-Blower”, but at the same time, he was “Immature” and “No Planner” in the game. So he paid the price for his own “Egoistic ” uncalled for behavior. But one quote he mentioned to describe all these “Crooks” of all shades will be recorded in our history books. He said: “Mun Okkama Yaluwo Malli” (All of them are friends brother) All those cases you mentioned in your article are shining examples of the “Bond” of friendship that exists among these “Crooks”.

You titled the article: “Politicizing Priyantha Kumara”. Do we have to “Ignore” or “Sweep” under the carpet the “Political Murders/killings” committed in our own country from 1971 to date? Note how the “Prisoners” under detention are “Murdered” and the “explanation” given by the Minister in charge of “Police”. The latest how an “Accused” in the “Disappearance” and “Murder” of 11 students is appointed by the President to the position of Governor of the North Western Province. You missed mentioning the “Murder” of an innocent Muslim furniture shop owner/a carpenter at “Hettipola” following the Easter Sunday bombing. His head was severed and poured engine oil in the presence of his wife and three children.

      Simon,
      .
It is no fair to generalize that entire world politicians would react to the manner, srilanken mlechcha politicians continue it. Remember immediately after that ISRAEL TOURIST was brutally killed by a rapist group in Tangalle, if UK govt and direct involvement of Prince Charls were not there, that guy, close confidiante of that murder woudl not have been convicted, going by the connection the criminal to have with Rajapakshe family.
      :
And the brutal killing of BLACK MAN few years ago in US, was investigated within 2 months and put the killer in jail.
      .
Over 40% illiterate dominated PAKISTAN did their best regarding the kind of murders, also arresting few hundreds
in, the current one in terms of brutal killing of PRIYANTHA KUMARA,
but nothing seems to be working for the serving justice in SRILANKA,
      :
UNHRC and other world bodies over to you, please involve in SRILANKEN extra judicial killings since high crimnals are back to power, then only we can protect our people s basic rights.

Dear LM: Sorry to say that you have not read between lines of what I said. I was not generalizing the world politicians with our “Vagabonds”. Our “Politicians” and the “Slaves” who follow them are UNIQUE and that is why I gave that heinous crime committed immediately after the Easter Sunday attack. There was one “Angel” by the name of Brother Charles who visited the site and congregated the villages with the help of the Buddhist priest of that village temple and took timely action to bring peace. Yet, what did the Politicians and their “Slaves” have done so far? No uprising as done in the “Sialkot” incident. In that respect, I salute Imran Kahan and the people of Pakistan and the religious “Command”. Our country has been “Overflown” with “Blood” of “Human Beings” by these “Bastard” politicians and their “Slaves”. Now enough is enough. Something has to be done to correct the course.

          Bro Simon,

          You are right. Applogies.
Please bring us another comment filled with what those Kadamandiya people say about GAS-CYLINDER-BLAST saga…. we have been packing ” pacifiers” to the president. He has now proved…. that he is not capable of settling even tiny issues such as – gas-leak .. related stuff…
He deserves to be stoned to death in public for all the mess created since Nov 2019. … in order to comfort the commoners.

Rajapakses make so much of noise about the killing in Pakistan, and rightly so. But why we’re they silent on police extrajudicial killing of those under police custody, not one but many. They also pardoned Duminda Silva who murdered another and appointed him Chair of Housing Authority, also pardoned Gnanasara the thug of a monk and appointed him to chair a Presidential Task Force. But imprisoned the honest politician Ranjan Ramanayake. Now to too it all appointed Karannagoda who murdered 11 as the Governor, what an insult to those living in that Province.

I am beginning to wonder if the bomb attack of LTTE is now having a late impact on his brain. Is he sane?

Buddhist 11 – I agree . Pardoning is convicted and Supreme Court confirmed murderer Duminda Silva must be the most arrogant abuse of executive power used probably ever!

And then allowing an convicted murderer MP to sit in parliament.

These are flat out contradictions to Gota’s bullshit manifesto of “ Saubhagyye Dakma.

OMG !! How much have these crooks have taken all of us on a ride !!

Pakistan looks like holy land when you consider the countless crimes Sri Lanka has committed against humanity and got away, specially the “Sinhala Buddhist” with the protection of politicians and their military power.

“Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa pardoned Former Staff Sergeant Sunil Ratnayake who was convicted in 2015 for the murder of eight Tamil civilians, including three children, in Mirusuvil in April 2000. The conviction and death sentence was affirmed by the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka in 2019.

The ICJ said that the pardon cast serious doubt upon the Government’s commitment to accountability and the rule of law in Sri Lanka.”

What use is there of a justice system in Sri Lanka?
““The prosecution of Staff Sergeant Ratnayake for his involvement in the killing of civilians, including children, at Mirusuvil was a rare exception to the usual lack of accountability for human rights violations committed during the conflict,” said Frederick Rawski, ICJ’s Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific. “Such a pardon is incompatible with international standards relating to impunity and access to justice, and reinforces the well-founded public perception that the military is exempt from any form of accountability, even for the most heinous crimes”.”

Asoka, none of the politicians care two hoots about the dead soul, they never did with hundreds who died before in Easter Mayhem . But they do not want to lose this opportunity in getting
    much needed political mileage.

      Chiv,

It is not fair to put all in one bin. Like many repeatedly attack all the 225 of parliamentarians. The situation is majority of them are stupid. … and dont want to focus on the facts. just look at the manner they exchange their arguments on ” highly serious issues such as as to why crime investigations of a large number of SLPP were nullified and treated with ” the same manner as exonerations” ? Justice minister being a muslim srilanken, but continue to be most abusive breaking the records of his fellow politicians. I never thought ALI SABRY would react this way.

Asoka no politician got punished ever for their crimes but public justifying those crimes for more than 70 years ??? is what makes Lanka a true miracle. Regardless of party difference, politicians are relieved to see Ranjan behind bars. Whistle blowing will never be accepted ( it is a threat to politicial livelihood) in Lanka.

Asoka Seneviratne is again angry, for the right reasons. Today, I am angry.
I am angry at him, for not displaying any of that anger at the injustices meted out to the voiceless minority communities in this country.

      Dear Nathan,
      .
Our sinhalaya s genetics is so, that the gene is missing for others# brutalities. They believe that theirs should also be kept about while minorities should be cornered forever.
      :
Minorities too are to be blamed as to why they remain not pro-active. I am tollay against those tamils and muslims who voted for Gota and Rajapkshes knowing that they are MOST PROVABLE mlechcha poltiicians that mother lanka ever produced.
      .
I am sinhalaya but I dont care my race from my childhood on. I would love to be called as a srilanken born to that island.

    Good morning.
“Where the heck is our rule of law and equal justice under the law. Nah. These provisions in our constitution are just hogwash. The big boys in power decide our justice or lack of it.”
The president has ensured that the situation will be looked after by the “1 country, 1 Law” Task Force headed by the Maithri pardoned criminal Monk Gnanasara.
be assured, the President claims, that it will end to your entire satisfaction!
Be patient, it should come before everlasting Eternity!!

This country is, among other things, being ruled by a klepto-kakistocracy. The root cause of this malady is our system of government. The Executive, the Legislature and the Judiciary are like the legs of a tripod. No particular leg is more important than the other two. Likewise, the burden of governance must be shared more or less equally among the three organs of state. One institution should not try to dominate the other two institutions as is happening now. Long experience has taught us (to those who would learn) that the executive presidential system is not at all suitable for our country. Intelligent people have realized by now that giving executive powers to a Sri Lankan politician is like giving a razor to a monkey.

As for drafting a new constitution for the country, Gotabaya Rajapaksa is not at all a fit and proper person to undertake a solemn and responsible task like this. This is much like the Devil wanting to write and publish a book on Theology!

    Asoka,
This is the beauty of this country. This is the land of Criminals. This is the culture we built up in the name of Lord Buddha and in the name independence and in the name of democracy for past seven decades. Democracy is Killed! Religions are Killed! Justice is Killed!
