Port City Is Detrimental To Sri Lanka: People’s Movement Against Port City

The People’s Movement Against the Port City has criticized Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe for his change in policy against the controversial port city project funded by China, while also warning the mega project might become the centre for money laundering and illegal commercial activities.

Ranil“It is very unfortunate that Mr. Wickremasinghe, now as the Prime Minister of the Government of ‘Good Governance’, is not only acting against his own words but also against the promise that he made to millions of people who voted him to power trusting his pledge,” the movement said in a statement.

The movement also alleged that although the project is planned as an offshore financial market, so far there are no regulations in place to control its commercial enterprises. “There is a danger that it might become a center for money laundering and illegal commercial activities, the statement said.

Following Wickeremesinghe’s statement at a media conference on the 10th April 2016 where he announced that the the port city project will continue, along with a decision taken by Sri Lanka to provide 1000 acres of land in Hambantota and Mattala to locate Chinese industries, the movement accused the government for violating the very basic principle on which it stands. “Can the Prime Minister make decisions on this matter ignoring the two pending cases in the Court? One might wonder where is the rule of Law?,” the statement questioned.

According to the organization, moving ahead with the project without taking into account the concerns of the people affected, the fishing community, the people who responded adequately to the EIA report and the concerns of the civil society which has not only highlighted their grave concerns but vehemently opposed the project due to its adverse effect on our ecosystem is a violation of their basic right for participation in good governance and decision making. “We wish to ask where is the space for People’s Participation, which is a hallmark of democracy and good governance?,” the statement said.

“It has to be stated that this type of senseless development is tantamount to transferring the wealth and the physical resources such as sand, rock materials, land, Colombo harbor, Mattala Airport and Hambantota harbor of the country to China making Sri Lanka poorer,” the movement said.

“Can mere mortgaging this land to China or any other big power be called development, Fr. Sarath Iddamalgoda the joint coordinator of the People’s Movement Against Port City asked. Fr. Iddamalgoda also raised the question as to whether the Prime minister has assured the integrity and safety of our natural resources and the rights of the people with regard to the environment.

“Prime Minister has no reason to celebrate USD 1.5 billion Chinese project when the project is going to dump sand and rock material worth over USD 4 billion to fill the ocean with no equity equivalent ” said Mr. Hemantha Withanage.

“Port City is not a standalone project of China. Therefore, this is feasible for China, however there is no study to prove that it is feasible for Sri Lanka” said Chinthaka Rajapakshe, Joint Coordinator of the People’s Movement Against Port City.

According to the statement, it is a well-known fact that China is looking for Sri Lanka as a strategic point in its ‘One Road One Belt’ strategy and also for relocating its polluting industries to manage severe environmental pollution China is facing at the moment. “It is an obligation to fulfill the climate agreements they made during the climate conference held in Paris in December 2015,” the movement claimed.

“Colombo Port city the Chinese dream is not part of the Megapolis, which is the dream of the ruling regime. The government should stop lying to the people of Sri Lanka promising brighter future though this unsustainable development businesses,” the statement added.

RE: Port City Is Detrimental To Sri Lanka: People’s Movement Against Port City

“funded by China, while also warning the mega project might become the centre for money laundering and illegal commercial activities.”

“Port City is not a standalone project of China. Therefore, this is feasible for China, however there is no study to prove that it is feasible for Sri Lanka” said Chinthaka Rajapakshe, Joint Coordinator of the People’s Movement Against Port City.

That was the objective, and the MaRas were bribed.

Because of the Chinese loans and financial situation, MW has to accepr the Chinese Terms.

The “West”, will not come to Sri Lanka’s rescue.

If you want to do something about it, start shooting MaRa and his cronies, VP style.

Then tell the Chinese, this is dangerous, and we cannot guarantee the safety of the Chines and their investors, They will give up and leave. Ask JVP to take on the project, or recruit ISIS for the project. An opportunity for them to become heroes.

RW never talks about the need to protect the environment. At least not loud enough. He is not burning for it. At least not that much.

UNP lead GOSL is in a fantasy driven race to beat both Singapore and Dubai.

However, SL is neither Dubai or Singapore. Despite their visible material development both Dubai and Singapore are highly Policed dictatorships.

RW’s agreement with the Chinese to lease land for industries in beautiful Hambantota is highly regrettable. Given the despicable environmental standards of Chinese industries, expect picturesque Hambantota, its’ fauna & flora to be destroyed. In no time.

I do not know the complex diplomatic difficulties involved, when dealing with an emerging super power like China. Criminal & corrupt clan from Hambantota got us into this mess in the first place.

Mattala airport was built on a priceless nature reserve to satisfy Basil Raja’s greed for commissions. It is a terrible scar on Sri Lanka’s natural beauty.

Any further Chinese industrialization around that Mattala will only aggravate the problem. GOSL should look into eco-tourism, elephant sancturies and that sort of thing. Matala terminal should be converted to a wildlife & bird watching center. Not a Chinese cargo and aviation center.

RW and his inner coterie should first take a trip to Bhutan. To learn a few things about sustainable development. My bet is he never will. RW is too caught up in the neo-liberal, free market, capitalistic, materialistic rat race.

In that process, this beautiful country will end up destroying our biggest asset. The Golden Goose. Our environment. The Garden of Eden.

Shed a tear for your beautiful country.

Bhutan? What “development” are you talking about?

They can hide behind the nonsensical “gross national happiness” but that won’t hide the truth about what levels of poverty they live under.

          Perriappa,

Bhutan is not perfect. They never claim to be so either. But, they certainly have a very big point.

In one generation we have wiped out nearly half of the worlds marine mammals, birds, reptiles and fish.

What are you going to eat, drink & breathe buddy? Chinese concrete from Port City and Mattala airport terminal?

Nothing is more important than our environment.

If you are too busy, caught up in the whirlwind of neo-liberal economic policies, entirely based on endless greed, prescribed as the only medicine available for any ailment, you do need to take a long weekend in Bhutan. Take RW with you.

          Cheers!

Ranil-Sira Ayahapalana govt. is turning out to be a bigger environmental and financial DISASTER for Sri Lanka than the regime of the corrupt criminal Mahinda Jarapassa, brothers and sons Inc. Soon there will be massive protest against this corrupt Ranil Sira regime with its obese Cabinet of clowns and Jarapassa will be back in the saddle with JO.

Sri Lanka is cursed by its Politicians due to Bi-partisan corruption and the stupidity of the voting masses.

On his trip to China, Ranil should have asked for DEBT CANCELLATION since the Chinese have only built WHITE ELEPHANTS in Sri Lanka – Hambantota port, airport, Norichchlai etc. and now planning port city which will be the biggest disaster.

Meanwhile, corrupt clown and insider trader, Arjuna Mahendran is on a borrowing spree. He is boasting about being able to borrow 3 $ billion after an IMF agreement, while pretending that the Panama Papers revelations are false.

Mahendran is a corrupt crook and has no plan to reduce borrowing or the Sri Lankan National Debt. which is the reason for massive currency depreciation which will continue after the IMF loan.

IMF conditionalities will further increase DEBT, impoverish the poor and promote corruption in Lanka. If IMF wants to really help Lanka, the first AID condition SHOULD be corruption investigations and tracking and bringing back funds looted by corrupt politicians and the Jarapassa family and cronies from illegal overseas bank accounts overseas in tax havens – to pay off national debt of Sri Lanka.

But this will not happen because the IMP is CORRUPT and wants to cut back on health, education ans social sector spending. IMF with its Washington twn the World Bank, has legalized corruption, tax evasion, rent seeking in the global financial system.

IMF and World Bank which calls itself the Knowledge bank (Ha, ha, ha!) have watched the looting of poor third world countries and the transfer of those funds to boost western economies by corrupt crooks like Arjuna Mahendran and associated political elites, and never said a word or BLOWN A WHISTLE to stop this looting poor countries including Greece which is suffering under IMF austerity measures..

IMF and WB publish copious reports on remittances of migrant workers from rich countries to poor countries, but never a word on the funds that flow from the global south to the global north via off shore tax havens that benefit the global north.

IMF and World Bank are supposed to be in charge of the global financial system and have legalized corruption, tax evasion and looting of third world countries by their elites through LEGAL NETWORKS OF FINANCIAL CORRUPTION
            .
Corrupt clown Arjuna Mahendran talking to the Corrupt IMF for another loan to offset Aahendrans bond scams is a joke! Legalized corruption is the name of the Ayahapalanaya Ranil-Sira govt. Game.

Arjuna Mahendran is a colossal DUD and corrupt criminal who is looting and destroying the Sri Lanka economy!

Thank you very much Dr. Harsha De Silva and Eran for keeping your mouths shut and watching this dirty economic game and acting like all the other corrupt politicians!

The people of Bhutan very recently got independence from their wise king. They started the easiest thing a sort of ebay to sell their products and very soon sold mushrooms at $500 a kilo of special mushroom. They created it in the style of Amazon helped by Japan. Their energy is still controlled by India but the citizens have made small hydro projects which is harnessing resources. Its a long way off when they would be in a position to sell electricity to India (they were about to be swallowed by India like Nagaland, Sikkim) because they have no cap[ital but that will arrive soon. They have no silos for storing produce and exporting- there is a lot taking place among the smart educated Bhutanese and Japanese. They do not want to lose the Buddhist kingdom and are proud to work hard towards it.

“The people of Bhutan very recently got independence from their wise king.”

“They do not want to lose the Buddhist kingdom and are proud to work hard towards it.”

I am finding it difficult to reconcile both lines above.

Who is going to be the new king of the new Buddhist kingdom?

Would you consider yourself to be the most suitable person for the job?

Till 1970 they were a recluse nation. Subsequently the king decided he could not run it along the lines that he was doing- monarchy. In 2008, Bhutan adopted its first modern Constitution, codifying the institutions of government and the legal framework for a democratic multi-party system.

They accept reality unlike Nepal which is also landlocked. They are not quarreling with india which provides them energy (which i understand is about 40% of GDP) The soil is alluvial Himalayan does not need fertilizer so there is more to come in the form of Organic farming only which is princely.
As far as their faith – they hold it like the Japanese linked to the King.- its part of culture.
Lanka is a distorted concept of Buddhism which is needless to say but close to ISIS.

“”Who is going to be the new king of the new Buddhist kingdom?”

The 36 year old handsome Dragon king Jigme Khesar rules so why bother??

“”Would you consider yourself to be the most suitable person for the job? “”
Don’t worry I wont drop Tibet onto Vitalstatistix. does that make you happy.

there are many things i like the romance, of the mountains about Nepal Bhutan.
Its a shame they don’t relocate Kathmandu capital on Rock at pokhara the most scenic place of Nepal and convert Kathmandu into organic farming.and export.

What development are you talking about. Ah! Perriappa. ???????

Port cities, airports in jungles, harbours to which ships never call, Lamborghinis, BMW’s, Maseratis, Posh hotels into which the rich only can enter, corrupt politicians, lethargic public service, national airline thats flying backwards, police force that cannot protect a simple armoury, motorists who dont know simple basic road rules, thugs in the guise of politicians, free flow of drug money, paying back debts since 1948, etc etc, are these what you call developement. If so then you must be hallucinating very badly.
Suggest that you take a bath, stop hallucinating, wear a pair of sunglasses when you go out, and if possible take a trip to Bhutan and see the unspoilt country. Then come back and compare it with your spoilt country and if you don’t see a difference then continue to live in your ” Gross national corrupt unhappy country.”
Finally please contribute to the welfare and well being of your Gross national happy corrupt politicians so that they will contribute to your Gross national unhappiness.

MR signed the contract and we cannot get out of it now.

Best that RW can do is to give it on lease rather than on freehold.

Get on with it now without any further delay.

The project has gone too far to cancel it. Manage down side risks to ensure impact is minimal.

RW or Prez Sirisena can only ask them to run that project within the lanken laws.. fully cancellation of the projects would not be easy for the lankens.. since they are also bound to china for various other projects too.

Bhutan is a backward dump ruled by a king. Sri Lanka and Bhutan cannot be compared. We have a huge employment problem. Our manufacturing sector is in decline. Our exports are shrinking year after year. This decline has been going on during the Rajapkashe era when lies and deceit helped to cover it up while Chinese loans and the wholesale corruption and bribery spread the wealth among his goons to keep up a lie. While all this was going on the youth of is this country had two choices.1 Join the Rajapakshes mafia or the army 2 Go abroad by hook or crook. They did both sometimes loosing the little they had and even their lives. This port city project is very unpalatable. But we live in a world of corruption. The west has sold its soul to the devil i.e the corporate and banking sectors who are the actual rulers. Tax heavens and offshoring wealth has become standard practice while the likes of Obama wring their hands and pretend they cannot do anything about it. So I think we as a nation have to suffer the environmental consequences and make the best of it. If it becomes a tax heaven then so be it. We will have to dance with the devil for he rules the world. China together with Russia are the counter balance to the type of global hegemony practiced by the west. To claim that RW does not understand these things better than the village thug who got us into this mess is a bit rich.

Ben, I agree with you 100% (in spite of the derogatory remarks about Bhutan, who is setting an example for the rest of the world with their sound environmental protection policies).

Our self-centered and selfish politicians have only their own narrow personal interests at heart and as far as the country is concerned, they couldn’t care less!

The reason we voted for the current lot was to get rid of the shitheads that preceded them – and that worked well, but what has happened since then leaves much more to be desired.

When SL embraces wider socio-political-economic strategies, it will will come out of its historical malaise.

Whatever the Anglo-French feelings, Euro tunnel made its landmark in the history and boosted the economy of the UK and France. Sedu Samudram project is a necessity, but will it materialize with the deep rooted religious feelings and prejudices in both Sri Lanka and India?

During Margret Thatchers time, M25 and Euro tunnel made historical landmarks. Both are contrinbuting enormously for the economic regeneration despite some deficiencies. UK’s current investment in the High Speed rail links is without the scale of feelings and fear of the prejudicial political animals in Sri Lanka.

In the west, every opportunity is taken as a reward and challenge to uplift the nations economies. In Sri Lanka, so long as petty minded politicians are the influencing factors, the country will be clawed for generations.

The primary task must be to reform the culture of the media, without which, Sri Lanka will find it hard to redeem itself from its slumber. The media must achieve the standards to oust the criminals, rouges and perverts from politics.

Port city project by itself is not detrimental to Srilanka, rather an asset. This is similar to in Singapore where land is reclaimed from sea and developed. Changi Airport is a good example, which is standing on a land reclaimed from sea. The problem about Colombo port city proect is the virtual perpetual leasing of part of the land to China. Rajapakse when cornered by west and India was looking for an escape route and flirted with China. He thought China will give him permanent protection to continue as head of Srilankan state till he dies. Sadly this has not happened, and the country is in a soup.

China has set foot in Srilanka not for just helping the country in development projects, but for geo-political reasons. It is well known that China wanted to surround India and have a control over sea routes in the Indian ocean. Hambantota harbour is part of this grand scheme. However much is said that hambantota harbour will attract transhipment business, it has not happened. Hambantota port can only compete with Colombo, and not with the two giants Singapore and Dubai. Moreover India has only to develop a harbour in South India as a less expensive option or deepen Palk Stratits as an expensive option in order to put to rest the dream of a Hambantota commercial hub.

The agreement of leasing land to China was not between Rajapakse and Chinese Prime Minister, but between Srilanka and China. It is an international agreement between two soveriegn states which cannot be abrogated unilaterally by one. Naturally China which is gaining a lot by this agreement will not agree to nullify it. Both MS & RW talked big at the election about cancelling the project. When MS visited china after being elected, riot act was read to him about the port city project. After his return, both RW & MS sang a different tune of reassessing the environmental impact and renegotiating it. However India has registered it’s displeasure about it.

Now the situation is worse with the country in dire finacial straits. Any amount of printing notes as done by Mahinda government is not going to help without solid foreign currency support. West and banks controlled by them have refused to lend any money to a sinking ship. Thus both RW & MS have to eat humble pie and appeal to China to get financial aid. However China has stayed put in demanding compensation for stopping their projects and are demanding uncontrolled access to all their projects, if that is to be waived off. MS & RW know that there is no money to meet Chinese demand and had to swallow their pride and agree to allow Chinese the full freedom.

Both RW & Ms do not want to acknowledge that Rajapakse has screwed the country for his personal gains. Moreover by bringing China in, he has created a geopolitical conflict with India. Both RW & MS know this and if they try to hoodwink India, then the country is going to suffer, as India is not going to watch silently all these Chinese gimmicks. At least India must now realise that giving carrots to Srilanka will not work and start using the stick. Read what Kerry has told that present government is also dodging the prosecution of war criminals and are continuing to arrest released LTTE cadres on bogus charges. All these are not good omen, especially in the abscence of a fair solution to the ethnic problem, for the future of a peaceful prosperous country.

Dr. Gnana Sankaralingam, My comment is just an observation; not a critique.

Changi Airport on reclaimed land, undeniably, is an asset to land-starved Singapore. Singapore is so tiny it had no land to spare for an international airport of such dimensions. I have work experience there.

When a feasibility study was conducted to make Palaly an alternate to Katunayake, I was there. It was scuttled for political reasons.

No port-city deal should have been contracted when all the land we will ever need is gifted to us by nature. Leasing of reclaimed land for a Port-city could turn out to be a Trojan horse.

The geopolitical conflict you are speaking about is the result of a laissez-faire adopted by India towards Colombo’s war against Tamils.

India is positioning itself rather late and awkwardly to extricate itself out of this mess.

The respite Tamils currently experience is obviously impermanent.

          Dear Nathan,

The alternative international airport in Srilanka should have been built in the Northern Province. None of the past regimes embarked on it and you know the reason, and for the same reason none of the future regimes will carry it out. Although Palaly airport has flights to India, it cannot be considered a true international airport of the calibre of Colombo.

Premadasa wanted to build a second international airport not in the north, but in Hingurakgoda. Fortunately he died before this project got off, and the country was saved from having a white elephant. Now Rajapakse has built this airport in Matala where no foreign aircraft is willing to land. In comparison, Premadasa’s Hingurakgoda is better than Rajapakse’s Mattala.

There are two possible sites for the airport in the north :
          1. Poonagari – This is just outside Jaffna peninsula and easily approachable from all the major towns in Northern province. Only a high speed road connection to these towns will suffice.
          2. Mankulam – This is equidistant to Jaffna, Anuradhapura, Mannar and Trincomalle, and will not only serve norhterners but also tourists visiting Trincomalee and Anuradhapura. There should be a high speed road and railway built to connect these cities.

None of these will happen unless there is an attitudinal change among majority Sinhalese or there is genuine autonomy granted to Tamils where they can carry out projects to benefit their people and not according to the whims and fancies of the Sinhalese. As a person with foresight, I would prefer Mankulam to Poonagari in order make the airport economically and politically viable.

            Dr. Gnana Sankaralingam,

It is not my intention to squabble with you. I have said at the outset that I was only sharing my observation with you. Now that you have opened up a topic in which your knowledge seems rather inadequate, I wish to contribute further, to clear the air.

            1) Palaly was looked at as an alternate to Katunayake. In aviation the word ‘alternate’ has a specific meaning, not akin to the usual. It means ‘in case of a need’. To be a little more specific, as the airport, when Katunayake is not available to land flights for one reason or another.

            2) Palaly had flights operting to Tiruchi and Trivandram. Those flights were Regional flights. Palaly could not serve Madras or Bombay. This was due to the strength of the runway that was available at Palaly, during my time. (That is why a feasibility study was conducted.)

            3) Colombo did not have the need to think of a 2nd International Airport, during that era. (Even Katunayake did not attract enough flights to fill its capacity).

            4) If you are thinking ahead for facilities to cater for local and tourist travellers, we are looking at airports of much smaller scale, not International scope. For this the requirement of strength and lengths are vastly lower/smaller. For a tiny island like Sri Lanka, a good network of quality roads can do the job. Airports will be white elephants.

            5) … (for another occasion).

The mighty Ranil Wickremasinghe had to eat the humble Chinese pie !

I am surprised as to why the Chinese Government didn’t snub Ranil. China seems to be fishing in troubled waters and they will manipulate and make Ranil under obligation to gain more power over the Sri Lankan government than when Mahinda was in power.

Ranil and his government have no right to be in power. They created an antipathy in Sri Lanka against China and their development projects. They misled people to believe in that all Chinese projects were covered with massive corruption. By accepting China, Ranil is admitting that what he said about Chinese projects were utter lies.

People in this country have every right to know as to how the Chinese bastardization Ranil so vehemently barraged during election period, become clean just in 15 months. Antipathy becomes goodwill due to Ranil’s desperation or what?

1000 acres from Hambantotoa is the high price the whole country had to pay for Ranil’s stupidity. What are they going to do in Hambantota? Will that be another CHINKA CITY (excuse me). A Chinese colony? Will Down South be inundated with Chinese people and workers?

On the contrary, China might not help Ranil to come out of the mess as easy as he anticipates. How could they forget the insults aimed at them and their projects to the extent that the Chinese Embassy had to issue Press Releases clarifying the issue?

Chinese and the east Asians are well known for their art of saving face . That is what they did for Ranil . and who can blame them after all the shit he threw at them . You need to know how to read between the lines when you are dealing business in that part of the world .

and to be honest what is wrong with them . They were the only ones who really helped sri Lanka in the time of her need . and before long they will replace the US as the most dominant economy in the world . so get used to it .

I would rather have a Chinka city in the south rather than a Hindian toilet in the North.

A-bhayagulla – you obviously haven’t a clue about the increasing levels of pollution in Chinese cities, which is one of the reasons they are trying to set up their mega-pollution projects in other countries.

In Germany stuttgart New railway station faced the same kind of peoples denials. But nevetheless they had to go for it.

What UNP and others opposed was against any projects that have been started without any feadsiblity studies. Colombo port city was entwined with unsolved items such as the lease and several other burdens that could fall on the srilanken side, all these the curret rulers have managed to solve through discussions held with the Chinese govt.

Without India and China there is no life for small countries such as ours should be clear to any 10 year olds today. Even if our currency should be circulated within the island, but for investments that last on long run, they the giants should be there. This is common to african counrties too… so srilankens are not alone here.
As some idiotic men make every effort to twist the heads of the vulnerable these days, even information bill being discussed will not damage the country in opposed to that, that will surely bring more investmemnts. We the nation should be open to the world then only investors see the potential of the lanken skilled workers to their investments. Lankens are with higher literacy and skilled rates inthe regions should be made clear to the investors, so then only the speed that the contry become an another singapore will be no far from us.

“Lankens are with higher literacy and skilled rates in the regions should be made clear to the investors, so then only the speed that the country become an another Singapore will be no far from us.”

The results from 68 years of independence has been mixed.

What does it take for this to happen?

What does the Lankans have and lack? The answers are there.

National IQ Scores – Country Rankings

The intelligence scores came from work carried out earlier this decade by Richard Lynn, a British psychologist, and Tatu Vanhanen, a Finnish political scientist, who analysed IQ studies from 113 countries, and from subsequent work by Jelte Wicherts, a Dutch psychologist.

Countries are ranked highest to lowest national IQ score.

Not only IQ but the ssytems work for the betterment of the people.

Politicians should have brains.. that is what matters.

In germany, where I am located, i know having lived here long that not every one in agroupd or team are intelligent.. with higher or average IQs.. for them they are raised by a system… law and order is above everything. No trains can wait even seconds very punctual… no matter anyone has their issues to be late… rigrous law and order enforcement.. then again people over here are welll trained for anything.. unlike the case in Asui land or the US, baker can only be a baker so long you have a certified knoweldge… in germany each and every skilled position to higher profesisonns you can get selected so long you have qulifications and trianings are there. But in UK, as my german colleagues provably confirmed, .. almsot every can become a manager if of course having less qualificaiotns…. but the English known to me in Germany says – it is the nature of English speakin world as a whole…

I believe, we the lankens should focus SYSTEMS in Germany and Singpore rather than any where else.

“I believe, we the lankens should focus SYSTEMS in Germany and Singpore rather than any where else.”

Can you not develop a unique system for this island which could be a model for rest of the developing countries?

Why should this island always have to follow some country somewhere else? The reasons this country lagged behind other country are several to start with.

Here in this island, we put the cart before the horse.

              MsThalanabatu ,

Have you heard of generation gap?? That is how Human Affairs work.
I have said this on many a previous occasion: that had the mix in Singapore been different, had it been 75% Indians, 15% Malays and the rest Chinese, it would not have worked. Because they believe in the politics of contention, of opposition. But because the culture was such that the populace sought a practical way out of their difficulties, therefore it has worked.
. President’s Address, Debate on President’s Address, Parliament of Singapore (March 01, 1985). Retrieved on January 16 2015.

He told Opposition leader Kotchi Nair – i would take you down to the cul du sac and let you have it if you challenge the system.

Even Nair’s ashes are not allowed to Singapore.

you don’t have the culture you are no different from indian above.
indian standards instuite is an amalgamation of German and British but they cant perform- But Indians in the USA are the next power of USA and they have only 1% of population.- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Indian_Americans

You may live 50 years at Germany but remember you are minority and they run the show so you do what they say. human is not machine to buy and replace.

                0

                This is no right.
I am not doing politics in Germany. Nor would I want even if the chance is given. But one thing is clear must not necesarily be in olitical fields, but also where you have been busy with ( for example doing the job for your living) there you are given a chance to share your thoughts. In the end the thoughts of majority will get passed – democracy wins; That is what these western countries practice, if not fully but percentage wise in many institutions and bodies. There are also areas where they go radically if the threat is pronounced for the peoples security – like the incidents reported in Colonge- attacks on women in general by alleged migrants from North african countries – on the night of 31 Dec 2015- since then, police and other powerful forces are well alert to keep it control not to see repeating the kind again.
Unfortunately, in our place -in the country once I happened to live until I left the country in late 80ties (slanka), even today, nothing much has changed in the system. A larger majority of people are provable antagonists whatever good pacts/bills being introduced to the nation for the betterment of the folks.

Just focusing on the bill of the right for information- which is now being under discussion now, I see, there are prominent journalists that interprete it as if that could harm as an epidemic kill the nation. In the same time, those who are the experts in the areas – as Uni dons seem to be doing nothing their part in terms of making their valuable contriubutions adequately.

Uni dons should join hand with the govt in the awareness discusisons- clearing the misundrestanding about the bill or any pacts that would be signed for the benefit of lanken folks.

We simply dont want srilanka to follow Germany or Singapore, but we can learn more from those developed societies through diplomatic relationships. Right at the moment, UK Cameron is not even cited in EU tabloids but his is seen in srilanka.. UK is sinking falling ot the levels of Greece in the months to come.

“”But one thing is clear must not necesarily be in political fields””
I am no politician but we are helpless because it engulfs us in our daily lives.

You have no idea what is planning and development but only know your well.
Brits are great because they are realist, dream and have a sense of humour but there is one more more ingredient sensitivity together it forms wisdom.
Germans, Japanese are both square heads (ww2) because they are idealist. I have never worked for others but made to work I select the englishman because he pays the best and is easy going- If i give him a tech report he would rewrite it which would look crazy but that is reality.
In a democracy of the west when there is no money – we go to war or print money. Germany created the PIGS and they must be loving you. UK with 54 commonwealth nations would never give up London being the financial centre of the world. your Euro is faulty towers and should collapse- RBI chief the first to predict the crash in 2007 (Greenspan etc ridiculed him) then came late TED partner of Laxmi and Paul Krugan to say yes it may happen- its another Ramanijam story.
This would take thesis so to cut short. Lanka being a former colony should follow the tested British policy on Policing. Police complaints Commission at the top of police (accessible on phone to individual however rich or poor if there is police inaction because powerful communities are harassing him) the PCC is only answerable to a committee of 11 MP’s. Below the police a Victim Support Unit stationed at every police station to help the meek women children to make complaints and stop the Cops from assaulting.
This is how you think the best of all worlds (bits and pieces that help the culture) The Belgian constitution was conceived like that until they were forced by multinationals who run the world of std governing and opposition parties to join EU. its a mistake for the first industrialized nation of Europe not germany. They have compulsory languages which the french speaking immigrants dont want to speak. Go out of your shell within europe and if you are capable to associate with whites ask them how they feel. Today from the news I understand merkel is planning 100k low paid jobs for refugees but she has over 1 million and over 1/2 million from Libya will arrive there this summer. Its is muslim policy to populate the world and take control and its not a new phenomena. I have traveled from the time i was kid worldwide- that 50 years and most of the time alone.
So don’t worry about UK that even dielectric Karl Mark did not understand.
If Hillary wins there will be lingering war and she would hide in space- thats her track record. Merkel would lose the next election and faulty towers Euro would be exposed. i hope a combination of Boris and Donald for a better economy.

So the Germans don’t have that essential ingredient of wisdom called humor and the English have it in abundance which make them human than German robots- mind the gap. The dutch have a balance of both.
A majority of the white Americans have German blood and the English language has more German than any of its other components.
The `realistic` Englishman rightly responded life is like that- England has a place even for a dirty old men or women. UK is very diverse and Germany is trying to copy so this summer more from Libya and Syria would be joining you.- Have great fun in the mosque.
Trains – In the UK while traveling if there is a delay and stop one can alight pick up a claim form from the station master and travel to destination by taxi. Its called complain, compliment, compensation.

This is out of facts – Angela Merkel loves the Brits band does not want Brexit.
Right at the moment, other way around is right as german tabloids loud – ” Brits love Germans today than had been in the past” – Livepool s coach is from Germany (Dormund) has won the soccer match yetserday was the latest

Not forgetting – the next greece will be UK and Portugal – the burden woudl come on germany shoulder is already known to the germans.

She makes no distinction between the brits and others from EU, that is the reason why she agreed to give shelter to the war victims of Syria.

Euro would collapse without Brits that is for sure so the East German Merkel who is new to the west knows not enough to say can do.
only the 1/2 million Allied forces who have to leave 2020 have this opinion- The Army men British want to stay there because of better services they are used to while the German women they are married to prefer Yorkshire and want to relocate.- this is fact of life.
Trump has made clear that it is best for UK to leave. While Obama the puppet leader hung by multinationls is force to be here and discuss softly: Barry was initially demanding that UK not leave NOW Next week,Obama to offer his friendly opposition to Brexit during visit to UK.

your EU is Fing Garvey train. it was presided by Fascist Portugese Barraso (go read him kaffir) that was per- planned by multinationals (i suppose you are not aware of the history of portugal 800 years of sex-slavery by Arab rulers) because portugese are known for treachery and Virgin Queen gave the final blow to Portugese prince. Barasso wanted to be the king of EU for life so he passed legislation but the Dutch intervened and stooped and threw him out in 10 years.(go read EU history) All the PIGS nations were tricked and Germany profited from it. Do you know where your Germany is now??
As before WW2 assisting China and automating it. The first auto it took is TT robot. i am sorry i dont’ agree with you. i have respect for Germany and Japan and have friends who have traveled and studied with- but when it comes to importance of living I don’t like to be a robot and I am from industry and innovate.
“2Not forgetting – the next greece will be UK and Portugal – “”
you are the classic dog in the manger buruwanse sinhala kolla who goes to the kattadiya.
If you look up and spit it would fall on you. i am sure you would love the camels and muslims and you can have white babies from Syrians. good luck

Do you have any clue of taxation within EU.??
All the folk who are afraid government/opposition have business dealings with EU nations and pay taxes there which UK is not aware of or is known so the taxes they pay UK are minimum (eg register at Luxembourg like Amazon and don’t pay taxes) US is different all taxes US wherever you have business).
Cameron and Osborne for example paid small sum- less than £100k. While mayor of London Journalist (pin up boy of the Chinese) paid 1 million.
Just today the public want the money sent to EU membership stopped and invested in NHS. We get less money back from EU exports etc but pay more money to EU- this is fact.
Casual contractors (arranged by agent in construction) come from Poland Bulgaria etc in overnight bus finish job and take all monies away no tax paid either in their country or UK.
From what I see you are labor class you wont understand until the shit hits the ceiling.
I dislike idiots who curse because you are not worth your salt and your stay in EU has not changed your attitude of the muslim.

Amarasiri… you may be not right ..

Not only IQ .. but also so many other factors help any society to improve accordingly.

I am telling you – the hospital I have seen visited in Germany, Switzerland, Italy, UK prove me their standards accordingly… most of them are not well trained nurses or the like personnel, but their systems have much in common. They work to rule. The standards in UK and Italy are notthe best… they take more time to fullfil documents in terms of some studies while germans, swiss work every efficiently. Having said this I want you to get to know you dont need to have almost everyon with higher IQ but they should have a proper system.

Why we dont see all the low levels irregularities take ground in Europe is due to their law and order being very strict…

AND the manner even a small child has been trained from the begining on is to leave a place clean… as iit is new to lankens. These world has controleld it by putting fines and hard punishments being equal to each everyone.

Even Dr Merkel is second to the law goverining inthe country. I am sure, Mr Sirisena has pulsed this durin ghis recent visit and association enjoyed being in Germany.

So please be out of this IQ theory, even down syndrome patients I happened to meet in Germany are well trained for the systems than lanken average teachers.

So what more talks we need to lead on this ?

I believe there is a big role to play by journalists. In Sri Lanka they are really not doing that much in trying to explain things to the ordinary citizens, and/or being critically investigating issues such as the pro’s and con’s of the Port City.

I agree with Ms Thalanbatu, pointing out how insignificant Sri Lanka is compared to most of our neighbours, in population, in economic (and military) strength or a combination of those.

In the long run everyone will benefit of these investment projects. And even more now we don’t have the Rajapaksa’s filling their pockets with half of the project money.

Be a bit more modest and grateful would be my advise to all of us!

    • 2
      0

Martin, we need more of you to make it clear.

Yes, indeed, the lanken journalists have to wake up from their slumber.

Can you LET alone today see any good interview by which Rajaakshe high men were interviewed for the crucial questions that need to have done long ago ?

      NO::

We call this press freedom – but those in power in lanken journalism do not the least to turn the mind sets of the people.

We need unbiased kind of high men in LANKEN press, then only, info can flow to the people and clean their COW DUNG FILLED mind sets.

Social media is a joke today. They just enjoy only even if I have to say, their mediation played the biggest role sending the most ABUSIVE bunch home as nobody ever expected.

      yOU ARE right.
our people should be informed well should be the duty of lanken journos.

They sleep further not letting good kind of jounors to do the job.

I bleieve, RW was right.. saying in parliament loudly ” that we dont want journlists that cover Rajakahes, but uncover amblipitya men or the like” We need journos that are equal to all.

How we enjoy today under the Duo s actions are under estimated by people today. At the time, Rjaakes almost stayed as if clayl eatn crocodile, all thugs abused their power. Most of all, BBS rabid wave did a greater harm to the lanken muslims who are also srilankens.

As UNP young minister such as Ajith Perera made it very clear, they were attacked physically and verbally in Hambantota.. Former president just ignored the incidents in public TV. Not forgetting the way, former President abused state helicopters to be present the premises of drug kin pin Lanza in negambo at the time the place was rounded by police.. remember ? …. Nothing like this is the case for today.

Even president is attacked by people, he just pays a smile.

Even pm is attacked by press he just ignore.

CBK has bene permitted to be free from her psychosis

SF is given all powers to react as a lanken citizen…

All these are as John Kerry pointed out .. are the democratic values.. that the entire world can see and judge by themselves.

With all due respect Mr Ranil Wickremasighe was never a smart intelligent individual. He is where he is due to family background. Did he even get an A minus, or even a B plus in any of his tutorials at the Law Faculty? Has he shown any capacity to research and publish results? Has he proposed any sensible comprehensive plan for the upliftment of Sri Lanka, except poorly modulated sound bites? He is a politician because he has been left there by circumstances.

Intractable burdens imposed on Society by successive politicians from 1948 require an erudite, super intelligent, intuitive, political leader with a magnetic personality to find solutions. Ranil Wickremasinghe is none of those. Mr Clean? Forget it. You cannot have nocturnal conversations with scum and remain clean.

Sirisena is of the same calibre as Ranil. Sri Lanka can expect a steep downhill roll to disaster. Parents give your children an English education to prepare them to leave the country. There really is no hope for the future. The Chinese Port City Project is for the benefit of China. It also sounds the death knell of everything good in Sri Lanka.

Mahinda supporters please note, this is not an endorsement of Mahinda Rajapakse. He was and will always be a shameless thief par excellence. He has no equal in that area of expertise.

Seela, lankens will not get it.

They feel wihtout EU and America, lankens can be … as said to them MR mantra.. but we are really inter dependent as any other countries have been.

Today, the world has started to respect us.

I am proud to call me as srilanken while being in Europe today than had been before. Earlier, they hated the bugger MR.

His handlings. Radicalism was about to take the ground.
Srilankas name was foudn in the list next to Lybia.

Today, most of them see it different.. It will take few more motnhs lankens can achieve a lot.. for sure. I have no doubt abot the way they move is right… only worry is about the investigations being on slow move… that hurt me that much since Rajaakshes are se tto be move today as if nothign is done.

Atleast journos should bring them to a conrer … and get the information them directly…. they should interview Rajaakshes as the minister of Finance for the following issues

        a)Tsunam
        b)Srilanken and Mihin
        c)Rand D losses
        d)Port authority Hambantoda Project
        e)Mattala – airport
        f)Petrolium co
g)other projects had been done by the name Gamanaguma… by 50%

On all these topics.. there are lot more ot be revealed to gap up the vaccums of information that re kept far from the people… to be revealed by Journos to a constructive manner..
More of the information are there, people will take them to hearts and will make up thei rmind sets..

Dear members of the movement against the port city,

Like you, many of us voted RW & MS into power for many promises and one of the promises was to stop work on the port city. I myself am very dissapointed in the manner the Yahapalanaya promises are being violated daily. Yet I am still elated the MR who foolishly gifted our land to the Chinese is no more in power. We must understand that the agreement MR entered with China does not allow us to exit from the contractual obligations he made. MR is a shortsighted village man who has no vision for Sri Lanka’s role in the 21st century. He is nothing else but a bloody fool (even if you take it literally).

One wonders that saving the nation from the LTTE and then giving it to Chinese is wiser?
They are both equally bad. China has taken over Africa, Pakistan, Nepal , Sri Lanka , Myanmar, Bangaladesh (known as the string of pearls ) with the objective of cornering India and we have no way out of this. We are a small subject matter on a very large and complex global agenda of the Chinese. MR’s mega folly has put this nation in serious trouble for generations to come. So blaming this government is not the answer unless we collectively as a public move against Cinese and Indian domination with all our mite.

“According to the statement, it is a well-known fact that China is looking for Sri Lanka as a strategic point in its ‘One Road One Belt’ strategy and also for relocating its polluting industries to manage severe environmental pollution China is facing at the moment.”

Let them dump their atomic wastes in the old Royals’ bunkers in Hambantota, like the way Aanduwa doing it to Tamils in Chunnakam Power station, Sampur plat…

This “Movement” against “PORT CITY” must take into consideration the “Agreement” signed by the previous Government. The present Government is now, according to the “Agreement” slapped with a huge PENALTY for the simple reason of “DELAY” of the project’s on going work. That PENALTY alone runs into US$ 125 million and the PM has been “FORCED” to a situation of NEGOTIATIONS. Making matters worse for the present Government is yet another, unspeakable “DEBT LOAD” inherited from the MR’s Regime. The picture here is very MONSTROUS and ALARMING. That is where I blame the PM for not being AWARE of those transactions while being the Leader of the Opposition and making promises that he could never, ever keep. In the circumstances, he (PM) is caught between the devil and the deep blue sea. Now armed with those “AGREEMENTS” and “DEBTS”, China has started the game of “Arm Twisting” along with MR’s support. This is a good lesson for RW for trusting MR; but who pays for all that – the PEOPLE of this country. Now PM is desperate and in that situation, he makes more and more BLUNDERS, such as this “Agreement” to hand over Hambantota Port, Mattala Airport, 1000 acres of land for an Industrial Zone, even without clearly defining the terms and conditions of such undertakings. He too is making the same MISTAKE and the biggest BLUNDER surpassing even MR and that would be PAWNING the entire country’s SOVEREIGNTY. He aims to soften the debt load by converting it to an EQUITY with these “pawning” method; but little realizes the dangers that this country would be forced into in the future.

India is yet another MONSTER with the teeth sharpened to “Enter” through the proposed “Land Bridge” connecting North of Sri Lanka and South India. That country is not going to keep QUIET with the entry of China in a big way from Colombo, (West) ,through the “Port City” and through a Port, an Airport and an Industrial Zone from Hambantota (South). When all these “Mega Projects” are completed, we will see India in the North and perhaps in the East and China in the West and South. Having this GOAL, is PM and this Government going to tell us to celebrate the achievement of Sri Lanka becoming the “HUB OF SOUTH ASIA”? The PEOPLE of Sri Lanka: Please, please, open your MINDS and HEARTS to the “BIGGER PICTURE” of these PROMISED HEAVEN on earth. Sooner the Better.

Are you for development or underdevelopment?

What is the alternative to what RW is trying to figure out?

Would you like to repeat your past experience such as tea with jaggery, long queue for bread, parripu and essentials, inefficient FEECs instead of proper allocation of foreign exchange for the importation of much needed technology, machines, machine tools, raw materials, introduction undemocratic exit permits if one wanted to leave the country, shrinking economy, unemployment, terrorism,….

One cannot understand the process of development if one is suffering from paranoia and xenophobia.

If you were the prime minister what would you do to stimulate growth, increase employment, earn more foreign exchange, attract the right kind of investment, develop infrastructure, skills, markets, new products and services, ……

Please avoid invoking sovereignty to prevent development.

I wonder who has been funding and backing the People’s Movement Against the Port City to shout loud against the project? I believe that there is an invisible hand behind this movement. Most likely the same invincible hand which has done nothing while diaspora funded the LTTE for three decades. India created the LTTE, but never planned to keep the war for decades. India imposed the Indo-Lanka agreement, because of the Western intrusion through diaspora and the LTTE. The Western countries have the ability to trace and stop every dollar that leaves their country, but they didn’t stop the funding to the LTTE. Therefore, my conclusion is the West has supported the LTTE indirectly as divide and conquer strategy. However, the West acted against the LTTE occasionally to pretend that they don’t divide others or make money on selling weapons. Without the West’s support the LTTE, ISIS, Al Qaeda, Muslim Brotherhood etc can’t grow. The Westerners are only 8% of the world population, therefore they have to create disasters among the 92% of the world population to rule the world. Most of you can’t stomach this reality, nevertheless it is a fact. China understands this reality and done well to avoid the West’s divide and conquer strategy.

The person gave the money is asking to pay back the money of allow to continue – people please give any solution to RW without just commenting. US and other countries came forward to rescue from LTTE which doesn’t involve money but provided laboratory. Now the best option is for all of us to jump into the sea or ask the answer from MR. You can escape from war crime but cannot escape without paying the debt.

The penalty of $ 125 Million mentioned was well worth the cancellation of the Contract, to prevent future generations to continue to pay for this ‘white elephant’ for one hundred years and more.

Ranil has been “pressured” by the Chinese by an unstated THREAT to the nation of Sri Lanka.

PM Ranil and Yahapalanaya Govt. had great expectations from USA,India
& Western countries to pump money into the country as grants & loans
from day one, the govt. started to work, to keep China at bay but to their dismay, these countries just talked and did not help the govt. financially but worked hard to bring back democracy into the country
by flattering SL at UN and other International forums. The govt.already burdened with national debts, did not embark on austerity drives as any new government would have done under the circumstances to correct the situation but went on spending lavishly on white elephants like Sri Lankan airlines, and expensive developments were undertaken, despite dwindling economy. Naturally PM Ranil had to eat his own words and go back to China on bended knees for further loans at higher rates and yielded to China’s wish to have a hold on the country, with the pro China factions having the last laugh. So, we are now back to square one and China will have a say in our affairs, specially in our foreign relations in the future. India, our closest neighbour may have a closer watch on us now rather than help us in development.

Mega port city project can beautify the city but as the writer of this
article feared, may become the centre of money laundering and illegal
commercial activities and become another Panama city as the govt. has
not proved yet that they could handle illegal activities as corruption
cases of the past era are yet to be cleared.

If the West can pressure and impose its interests by its fake morality. Why the Chinese shouldn’t demand their terms before giving their money to others? Who supported the LTTE indirectly through diaspora and allowed the brutal war to go on for decades? Who is demanding war crime probe in Sri Lanka now? What about a genuine war crime probe in Iraq, Afghan, Vietnam, Cambodia etc.

Above all the Americans, Australians, Canadians and Kiwis don’t even live in their own country but occupying others’ homeland which they took on genocide. Can they acknowledge that Native Americans, Australian aboriginal people, Canadian First Nations and New Zealand Mari people are the true owners of America, Australia, Canada and New Zealand through their constitution? No the white devils won’t acknowledge the truth. If they do, it defeats the purpose of invading those resourceful countries on genocide.

The West is daydreaming to rule the world in the name of democracy and human rights while deleting my citizenship and isolating Julian Assange, Bradley Manning and Edward Snowden. I am more qualified than Assange, Manning or Snowden. I have a message for the Americans and the British, you will go down quickly than anticipated if you continue to entertain dirty Aussie convicts. ““It is very unfortunate that Mr. Wickremasinghe, now as the Prime Minister of the Government of ‘Good Governance’, is not only acting against his own words but also against the promise that he made to millions of people who voted him to power trusting his pledge,” the movement said in a statement.”

So, Iddamalgoda, now you want to play Emmanuel’s role. China is not to be blamed and it is unfortunate Ranil is a turncoat who is acting against his own words.
So You & your movement need to point crosses, swords & tridents at Ranil..

Antany Peter , how long we are going to grumble about divide and rule. We cried 60 years ago and still crying. Why can’t we accept our defeat and live under western countries. We could not manage our very small internal trouble ourselves and called all the countries to deal with LTTE. Britain asked Scotland to decide, can we do that, No, because we are fast moving towards our demise. We told sovereignty for each and every thing but how many people know the meaning for that word – can we still claim that word for our country. After all we can not build our own sheds and provide employment to poor people, and the army is holding land and not allowing people to cultivate. Government is making people lacy and useless.

There is much to criticize about the Port City. It is a sad outcome of the “visions” of development successive regimes have had for a country that has lost control over its destiny since the open economic policy came in.

People’s Movement Against the Port City, to be credible, should shift its emphasis to the negative features of the projects themselves than speculate on Chinese intentions.
There are matters of a general nature to protest about regarding foreign ventures: should we not object to the right of foreigners to buy large tracts of land?

What has been lacking in the past regime and the current regime is transparency.

“It is a sad outcome of the “visions” of development successive regimes have had for a country that has lost control over its destiny since the open economic policy came in. “

For thousands of years this island had no control over its destiny.

BTW, what sort of destiny are you talking about, modeled on former Cuba or the present North Korea, …… isolated from outside world, highly militarized, zero tolerance for dissent, absence of freedom of speech, father and son leaders sitting in the throne for centuries, ….. ?

Do you regret that VP is now gone for he too tried foolishly to take control of not only his own but the destiny of Tamil Speaking people?

Whether you like it or not no country has control over its own destiny and its imagined sovereignty.

Most older folk in the UK are cared for in the community- they live longer and happier. A 70 englishman cares for 87 years old englishman and I have never seen timing like that- 6am – 1am (every 2 hours) military discipline so when older women see that they come in to make a special meal for him etc- he has got a complimentary award for it from council. No Asian would do it.

Tell him he is in the wrong place and try and rush to the USA because it pays 3 times as much. But beware he may get shot like deer in a park because he is coloured and Obama cannot help that- In life without a risk one does not make it.

I am in waiting with my dingy for you to establish Sri Lanka’s (or is it good ol’ Ceylon’s) claim to the island in the sun with a beret.
Is your dingy, the one in which you crossed the Big Divide after fighting the two wars, in fair shape?

Learning and developing is a good thing.

The sad thing is you stopped both in the 1960s. Arrested development perhaps, a boon, a blessing from Siri Mao. Its not too late, ask IH, HLD M, sach Jim softy …. who can develop you further or least they could help you to stay where you are, given that your deteriorating capabilities, every bit helps.

People’s Movement Against Port City is a 19th century’s left over of Anagarika Dharmapala. That is not the moderns Nagarikam. Time is out for it. Friday Falsedom is modern. But members are too old. I asked for membership from Sumanathiran’s and CV’s ” People’s Movement Against Swaminathan’s 65,000 iron huts They said it did not work and even they are quitting and winding it down. Recently I got an idea. I am opening a novel one. “People’s movement against Ranil’s sale of Hambantota”. I believe it is really, really marketable. Any prospective members to join “People’s movement against Ranil’s sale of Hambantota”?

They say in Tamil “Chandranai Paaththu Naai Kulaichchuthaam”. (The dog was barking at the moon, without realising how far the barren planet, moon is away)

Who are these guys anyway, for Ranil to pay attention to them?

Whew….thank God that Land-Bridge is not to be built. However, we hope that this is US approved, otherwise it beats the purpose of regime-change.

Let’s hope that Ranil and Co. haven’t merely replaced Rajapaksa and his set of crony capitalists, and the same impending problems will arise viz. American interference into the Chinese String-of-Pearls, and Elite Lankan Monopolies that won’t do anything for the average man.

As per the pollution to Colombo City and the environs of Hambantota, it is wished that Lankans can come to a concerted effort to take a step back and pay taxes to settle debts, so these places are not irrevocably destroyed. But we know this won’t happen, and so it is the choice between the China and India. I prefer China.

“”American interference into the Chinese String-of-Pearls,””

There is no american interference- they cannot interfere with the pendant of the necklace where there are ancient Chinese fishing nets (not at Lanka) COCHIN- it will never be developed whether its Congress or BJP or any government until Pakistan comes back to India.

“Whew….thank God that Land-Bridge is not to be built.”

Therefore when Congress comes in next the Bridge would commence. Start learning Hindi not mandarin.

Ranil is trying his best to solve the problem. Where was this People`s Movement when that bloody traitor Mahinda began this White Elephant project for his own benefit? Why not suggest a solution? How are we going to pay back the money we owe to China on the agreement that was signed by the previous government? If that Komis Kaakkaa is the person who originated this he should be taken to task. How? Let that man spend his own money and clear the port of all those half built structures and what he has already dumped into the sea. Miracle of Asia!

” Port City Is Detrimental To Sri Lanka: People’s Movement Against Port City”

beggars can’t be choosers.Buggers who become beggars can’t also hold onto their assets too. After all the begging culture started with monks going house to house begging for food as the Lord Bhuddha instructed them to.However now that has stopped and the monks have now a beggars banquet.our politicians too after the beggars bowl is filled up have their beggars banquet.

It beggars belief that at one time our prime ministers were begging for millions of dollars and now our prime minister is begging for billions.

It means that once a beggar always a beggar, but now we are rich beggars.

To get rid of the begging mentality you have to work. Now who likes wada(work) in this country.mention the word and the person will be missing in action.

If you were the prime minister what would you do to stimulate growth, increase employment, earn more foreign exchange, attract the right kind of investment, develop infrastructure, skills, markets, new products and services, ……

      Please respond.

I can’t believe somebody honestly arguing that China is hacking the computers and levying a penalty on the “hold” of its projects only to really develop the Lankawe 18 billions robbed out economy and make the poor(or utter modayas) “Biryani parcel and Arrack” seekers in the political rallies to stay at home and put some rice on their plates.

    Sorry mates

    Good People

Interesting comments but the truth is stark.

By the time our PM Ranil Wick and entourage took their places for the recent banquet they had been well and truly primed. The dishes with exotic names were impressive of course (none of the usual stuff you get at Flower Drum; and not a stuffed cat in sight). The Duck was naturally top ho! Best was the moutai. With every toast Ranil’s face got redder, and redder. In the end he was ready, not only to sign off Port City, but also throw in Patta Champika for free.

Heavens Door had, once again, opened wide for our inscrutable hosts.

Funny, Nobody mentioned Mattala, Magampura, or even Norochcholoi. The past is past, now can we be best friends again and carry on like nothing bad happened?

omg! for the sins of Ranil, and one-one else but Ranils’ moutai intoxication, Americans are going to invade!

Not a big problem is it? You seem to be enjoying it in Pennsylvania all this time after all? The irony of people sitting in America and then shedding crocodile tears over an American invasion!

Not at all….we sit here and do our best to educate Americans on Sri Lanka, and try and change policy for Sri Lanka.

No not really. Ranil is on a revolution as he mentioned at the start.

you must first take away those BIGOT visors before saying alas.

The way racist of the nation are draging the island they are unable to select an honest far sighted leader who can get things done like eg Boris Johnson
did not Mara get eggs thrown at him at London.

What Lanka is to go into administration like any business would if it is driving the population into poverty and back to north Korea syndrome.

There cannot be hapiness with out slogging it hard.- Samsara.

Why don’t the Government use the same excuse to cancel the agreement with China it used to abrogate the 1987 Indian accord quoting the accord was ‘signed under duress’!

We also could say Sri Lanka signed the agreement with China under duress as we were under pressure from the Euro-American axis after the victory with the LTTE.

“Port City Is Detrimental To Sri Lanka”: People’s Movement Against Port City

Have these people only just woken up?

Where were they, when the Rajapakses launched it and went about lowering our mountains and filling the sea?? Where were they??

Suggest they shut up and swallow the bitter pill. There is no way out, other than continuing with it, come hell or high water.

Suggest ‘Peoples movement against Port city’ take a cold shower.

J&F – you ask “Where were they, when the Rajapakses launched it and went about lowering our mountains and filling the sea?? Where were they??”

They were afraid of invoking the wrath of the Pakshas and of being white-vanned , for starters.

      Where were you????

No way out??? But then don’t fault those who are concerned about the country for trying.

You can now swallow that pill and don’t forget the shower – it may just wake you up!

Nathan, thank you for feeding AVAL for hungry people – we all know you have some knowledge about Airport planning but need some diplomacy to deal with sensitive issues – we Tamils are not very good at it, we have to learn from Dayan J. We Tamils spent most of our time in vain to pleasing others(another name is open mouth idiots)
