President Sirisena, You Are Not Fit To Be Our President

By Soraya M. Deen –

Soraya M. Deen

President Sirisena,

In late October, you, took Sri Lanka by surprise. The news was terrifying and alarming. 71 years after Independence you singlehandedly threw Sri Lanka into the darkest hour of its history. You ignored and disregarded the supreme law of the country. You abruptly sacked the Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, calling him inept and corrupt and in a clandestine meeting you then appointed a new prime minister: Mahinda Rajapaksa, a former president who was your arch rival. When the members of Parliament opposed this, you casually dissolved Parliament.

After many promises not honored, many deadlines not met, on December 15th you reinstated Ranil Wickremesinghe as Prime Minister, ending a seven-week long standoff that crippled Sri Lanka. You vowed that you will never reinstate him, you publicly blamed and shamed him. You even said that if he is reappointed you will resign from your job and not remain in office even for an hour. Days, weeks and months have passed and you have not resigned.

Today, the country is upset not that you have lied to them, but that they are unable to believe you anymore.

President Sirisena,

For the past three months your words and your actions have emboldened a dangerous new growing politically corrupt leadership. You have legitimized lying and deceit. You have spoken about Buddhist values, and Sri Lanka’s rich cultural heritage. You have spoken about Mandela and the Pope. Yet, you say one thing but do something else. Perhaps you might not agree that it is better to bite ones tongue than eat ones words.

You speak eloquently about all matters that need to change, but fail to change just one thing – that is you.

Credible leaders have integrity. They practice what they preach. They do what they say and say what they do.

President Sirisena,

I write this letter because I believe in a Sri Lanka devoid of hypocrisy, corruption and fear. I also write this letter because I believe in a Sri Lanka that can produce visionary leaders who could restore trust, abandon hidden agendas and guide us to achieve unity, prosperity and peaceful co-existence.

Ever since we have called ourselves a Buddhist nation, the world has looked up to us to embody the teachings of the Buddha. The loving kindness and the hospitality of the majority Buddhist citizens towards the minority citizens when devoid of political manipulation has always been exemplary. But the shield is cracking. Leaders such as you who should promote unity and harmony have embarked on a very narrow path of hate and aversion, that today even our youth are no longer influenced and protected by the dharma.

President Sirisena,

You are not suitable to lead our country until you fully acknowledge that you have lied and misled the nation. You have not only targeted Ranil Wickremesinghe, a man you said who has violated you, you have deliberately and with utmost callousness undermined truth and violated the supreme law of this land – The Constitution.

No one is holding you accountable nor is anyone speaking the truth to you. Danish author Hans Christian Anderson in his short tale “The emperor’s new clothes,” writes about two weavers who promise the emperor a new suit that they say is invisible, while in reality they make no clothes. The emperor parades before his subjects in his new “clothes” no one dares to say that they do not see any clothes on him for hear that they will be seen as stupid.

Are the people around you afraid that they will be seen as stupid or are they truly afraid of you?

President Sirisena,

The founding principles of our country, and the core values of our nation are held together and protected by our constitution. These values have no political and personal affiliations. They are Sri Lankan ideologies. They are sacred. They hold our nation together. They provide safety and security in upholding human rights and the dignities of our people.

The Constitution is the safe keeper of our liberties. As an Attorney at Law of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka, I pledged to uphold and defend the constitution. I am sure you did the same, when you took the oath of your office.

Any willful violation or desecration of the constitution must be challenged by every patriotic citizen with great fervor and urgency. Protecting the constitution is not only the function of the Executive, but that of all Sri Lankans.

Your willful refusal to respond to the concerns of the nation regarding the unconstitutional dissolution of parliament, dragged to the streets scores of women who notwithstanding the rain and sun showed up to make their voices heard. They pleaded with you to restore the status quo. They demanded the truth, because the women of Lanka mothers and sisters, verily believed that the truth is not negotiable. To some it was a value they taught their children every day and they showed up to stand up to that value, when you chose deliberately to ignore it.

President Sirisena,

You are not fit to lead our country until you stop your assault on the United National Party. This is the party that brought you to power and made you the President.

Have you forgotten one of the Buddha’s Jataka Stories – “The Bodhisattva Sage and the Ungrateful Prince? This Jataka story conveys to all of us the fact that people who are sincerely appreciative of the help and kindness which they receive from others will ultimately enjoy success and happiness.

On the other hand, ungrateful people who fail to appreciate the help, kindness, and generosity which they receive from others will ultimately perish from their own degeneracy, ignominy, and disgrace.”

You may have grave issues with the UNP leadership and with other matters pertaining to governance. Why have you not worked it out? Please note that you have the freedom and the right not to choose to love them must also know that you have a duty and an obligation not to harm them.

President Sirisena,

You are not fit to be our president until you, who is a Buddhist, commit to practicing what you preach. Perhaps you can begin by, practicing some basics of Buddhist philosophy. Our country is devoid of unity. From communal reconciliation now we are focusing on political reconciliation. What a burden you have imposed on the nation? The whole country is held hostage by political bickering, fighting and divisive narratives. You have led the charge in making this the norm. Please instill into Sri Lankan lives at least some of what the Buddha taught. We Sri Lankans want to be happy. No one can achieve happiness in isolation. All life is interdependent. The happiness of one depends upon the happiness of all and the happiness of all depends upon the happiness of one.

Can you begin by practicing the four great virtues, known as the four “Brahmaviharas”, the four Immeasurable’s;

Maitri – Loving-kindness,

Karuna – Compassion,

Mudita – Appreciative Joy

Upeksha – Equanimity

Set an example, lead us to cultivate wholesome attitudes towards others in society and towards all sentient beings. Our children are watching. We may not be able to repair older men, but we can raise happy, peace loving children.

President Sirisena,

The highest courts of law, almost all the governments of the world, have denounced your actions. The brave women of Lanka, men, activists, youth, poets, writers, the elderly and even people who are physically challenged have shown up at rally’s and have made their morally strong, but often powerfully weak voices heard.  They have walked in the rain and the glaring sun, to give us hope and speak renewed possibilities when the very foundations of our democracy was being desecrated by you.

In a clandestine meeting late into the night, you appointed as Prime Minister, a man whom you yourself have exposed to be the most corrupt and ruthless leader Sri Lanka ever had. How could you betray your country and the people this way?

President Sirisena,

Leadership is a challenging responsibility. Leaders who impose their will on the people are many. Leaders who indulge in self-glorification and promote anger, hatred, fear, ill will, cruelty, jealousy, clinging and aversion are also in plenty.

But leadership built on vision, right action, right speech, trust, love, humility and understanding demands a high degree of personal integrity.

One of the greatest lessons in leadership I learned from Buddhism – Practice what you preach and preach what you practice – Yathavadi- Tathakari, Yathakari-Tathavadi.

And I say President Sirisena- you have enormous power and you have abused that power. You are not suitable to lead our country.

Simply Great ! You have articulated it in a simple manner how we the unbiased BUT longing FOR better future of rour young ones would feel it. Thanks very much Ms. Deen, we really appreciate.
      .
Sillysena has no shame to stay further hung on to his position, even if the entire world would ridicule out him.No matter his position, is the HEAD OF STATE of 22 mio people, whose literacy rate is over 93%, which is virutally comparable level of a developed nation. One would not wonder, if this man would PEE like a race horse on a public stage. So shameless as a mad person would behave. Zero credible what comes out of his mouth. He is just a waste for this battled nation.
      .

      :
He just uttered words as not even primitive some leaders from far poor countries. Ours is record being one of the oldest democracies thanks our past leaders. Unfortunately, it has now fallen to the levels of Myanmar or the like countries, only people’s votes are considered as important any crooked politicians to get elected and ruin this nation. Politiicans that grass eaters of the nation consider as ones lead extremism and racism on broad day light are held above the buddhist shrine. Media mudalalis and the mentioned kind of politicians, CEMENT the picuture in favour of them in the hearts and minds of gullible folks. People are innocient. If they would ask to go after VALAMPURI for dreams of fortune, they would easily bend down and do it not thinking twice. The buddhist culture, so called buddhist monks have planted in this country mislead people’s freedom to the manner, they would not be able to disagree. So, being behind so called BUDDHIST monks, vicious and malicious politicians score their numbers. Easy targets become easy prey of predatory politicians. The BEST EXAMPLE is current day RAJAPKAHSE POLITICIS.

Is the Prime Minister fit to be our Prime minister ? This question can be asked from every holder of public office in this country

Also are our doctors, lawyers, other professionals, writers, nurses, teaches up to standard ? What have they achieved ? Has anyone ever won an international award for personal contribution ?

This kind of question sounds dramatic but really no meaning

There are 3 common things one can see among Sri Lakans:

1- One always finds faults and complains about others/other colleague whenever gets a chance, tea time, lunch time, free time etc. This is seen from the lavatory cleaners to the president.

2-Wherever, Sri Lankans work, they make 1 guy an “ayya” or give unnecessary respect and importance to this guy, we don’t know for what. Ultimately this guy influences others in everything, and others too do not feel secure without him around.

3-Bow and scrape to someone due to his wealth, position, family-background, education, and in some instances criminal background as well – But why?

I see all of these in our politics and other important institutions as well.

    Soraya,
You’ve started an article as if nothing happened before sacking the PM last October. You had never heard of the Central Bank scam and Arjun Mahendran? Nowadays, where are you living? Didn’t you hear what’s going on at the Customs? Have you heard about the scam involving over 1600 BMWs at Customs? Who are you trying to fool by hiding the reality like a blind Ostrich?
Forget all that! Did you read the CT and the SL daily press about the PM and his royal circle for the last few years; at least for the last few weeks?
Don’t pretend you’re blind and ill of hearing!

      To those who made Thumbs-down:
You show the exact nature of ruling English speaking slaves in SL and their supporters around the Golbe. Most of you want to destroy SL along with Yahapalana leaders. However, in SL, Justice wins and the most recent example is the Custom’s work strike against the illegal removal of Custom’s chief in order to rob over Rs. 11 billion in taxes by changing custom documents of over 1600 BMWs.
Finally, yesterday, Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera has knelt down before the custom’s chief who is a Tamil Civil Servant of the Sri Lanka Administrative Service. She is back on the Job now as the Custom’s chief.
Writers like Soraya tried to distract our focused attention but failed miserably. Those who gave Thumbs-down too should learn a lesson!

We all knew about this man in 2015 and you now pretend that you didn’t. You fooled the people about this man to gain power.

Sad to say that, you’re like our misled Marxists

When there’s a possibility to get something through a gentle request, they utter & repeat all the bad words with fake emotion to demand & finally never get it because of offensive words.

As there’re fools to gather around such Marxists, there are fools to be faithful to your utter nonsensical writing.

[edited out]You knew nothing about the corruption indulged in so freely by your adored leader Wickramasingha? Two faced idiots writing for personal glory does nothing to get this country out of the mess created by this so-called Yahapals including of course the likes of you who turn a blind eye to every misdeed brought on by your preferred political party. Shame on you.

Well said Soraya Deen. If he violated the constitution how come he is still in office. When the supreme court of the country decides that the president has gravely violated the rule of law is there no punishment?

I think, Presidents real dilima is not understanding real polity behind contemporary Sri Lanka. He still with Neolithic revolution model as he does not seem to have understood the limitations that country has towards improving quality of life in 21st centry by forcusing primarily on improving agricultural sector as people’s income improvements intertwined with increasing revenue from export sector which can only be improved by innovating and value addition to every segment of products and services we are currently producing , and obviously this would not happen unless and until we introduce world class systems and procedures to govern these sectors. This would necessarily entail running the govt by people who are conversant with these procedures and systems. I have my doubts incumbent President has the ability to learn all these, and the net results would be we will be stuck in backwardness if people fail to take right decision to vote him and his brand of people out of office at the next election.

      Peris,
      .
Ours is a place where Tsunami Embezzlers are kept above the shrine. Lately, I happened read few comments added to YT videos, ” we are even ready to spice the kakka of Rajapakshes”: Poor stupid folks are made blind for their power greedy tactics. This is a country where over 90% of the populace are after Astrology and other sorcery not thikning twice. So, sowing falsehoods and reaping the harvest has been traditional methods of vicious politicians.
      .
Murderers albeit availability of black and white evidencen stay scot free just because, media mudalalis cement the picture or refrain from passing the truths about them.

Lasantha Killer- is roaming in the city yet today

Thadjudeen killers, hold royal style weddings with over 6000 guests – and enjoying all the previledges on the costs of tax payers

Ekanaligoda killers or abductors, just attacked the victimized family and two young boys, on and on, as if festated wounds are subjected deliberative hurts, with CONTINUED patronage of main stream media and their cooky politicians.
      .
23 Prisoners were gunned down by alleged killers close to former Defence Secratory, yesterday, they celebrated 71st independnece, but no such words for justice seekers yet today, instead of paving the way murderers to get caught by the courts, what they have been doing is just mislead the nation.

Your preaching the President, if I may say so, will be like pouring water on duck’s back. He tactfully extents his Presidential immunity to shame, deceit, untruth, stabbing in the back – you name it. But let us hope against hope that he will have traces of humility still left in him to ponder on your words of wisdom to prompt him to change course for the betterment of the country.

This article has clearly been written as if this is the worst unconstitutional act a president in power in Sri Lanka has ever committed. Not denying the fact that Sri lanka needs a proper selfless leader who cares about the country but It’s ironic how everybody has a lot to say about this but nobody cared to speak up when the government was still corrupt and people were disappearing 5 years ago. The country is clearly closer to democracy now with people having free speech to a point where they can actually criticize the president. Did we even have that freedom with the previous government?

Notwithstanding the well written and presented article, the conclusions can be challenged from another perspective while accepting the factual content.

A simplistic view of the outcome of the 2015 presidential is as follows.
Sri Lanka needed to preserve democracy and MR’s defeat was a critical factor.
It is absolutely important to note that MR has done what no other leader did – essentially defeating the LTTE. RW was merely a mouse then – nothing more.
MS was selected to run against MR (Chandrika’s role in this should be appreciated too!)

UNP led by RW would never have come to power without MS.
RW ran the country with total disregard to MS. MS mistakenly was beholden to RW.

MS actions (unconstitutional as it transpired later) were allegedly based on legal advice.
Such actions jolted the UNP (with all rampant corruption and the daylight robbery – the bond scam).
From a citizen’s perspective, what MS did was most desirable.
Unchecked, UNP would sell the whole country to the West, East and Europe
Keep the government on its toes.
I hope MS will continue to do just that with vigour and energy. MS need not practice Buddhism nor preach others to practise it. He needs to be tenacious in stopping corruption and stopping other constitution making activities to negate all what the defence forces sacrificed their lives for.
History will be a lot kinder to MS. He deserves to win the Presidential elections.

Hold Provincial Council elections and then Presidential elections.
    Let people elect their leaders.

    Ms Soraya

I agree with you that Sirisena is not fit to be President in every way. Time & again he has put his foot in his mouth. He has no vision nor competency to be the President of a country but has been playing to the gallery, as all such uneducated politicians do, with only words & contradicting himself in the process. He has obviously no shame &, probably, no idea what he is saying, lost in political wilderness with the only intention of getting another term in office, for which, would do a deal even with the devil. I am sure he will find that he has no friends the day he leaves office because he has been back stabbing everyone for his selfish reasons, which is probably why he wants to make as much money as possible so that he can live in comfort but in isolation when he is sent home.
The question is, how soon can he be forced to leave?

Soraya Deen has written well, but too late. When we tired of the Great Liberator and his cronies, Sirisena saw his chance and came forward. We needed a great Sri Lankan hope, and we were willing to clutch at straws. Anything. So we overlooked the shortcomings of the man. They were there for all to see, over the years his lack lustre management skills, his many vacillations. Yet our great unwashed, the mugs who eagerly who would vote in anything their political leaders put in front of them, did not disappoint.

Now he is man in a corner, fighting to stay afloat; his only solace is Jayanthi, Chathurika, Daham and Dharani. The best advice he can be given is go back and tend those few acres of paddy, write your story, and tell your grandchildren that you shook the glove-less hand of the Queen of England.

We too, as citizens of this country have to take responsibility for the status quo. We protested post Oct 26th till the President reappointed the Prime Minister and then returned to our complacency while the leadership continues on its path of revenge and leg pulling. The anger and antipathy the President harbors within him was evident on his face during the address to the nation on Independence Day. I salute you Ms Deen for addressing the President as you have done. Let’s hope and pray his heart is open to Maitri – Loving-kindness, Karuna – Compassion, Mudita – Appreciative Joy and Upeksha – Equanimity

Soraya M. Deen: Much to the chagrin of the team, MR brought forward the Presidential Election by some two years to January 2015. He was riding high and was confident of wearing the PapaDoc crown.
    .
The opponents were testing out as to whether a regime change was possible and persuaded MS who fell for the flattery.
There was a little bit of ‘Law & Order’ left as far as the ballot was concerned. The voters spoke. MR was shocked. Very soon MS realised his folly.
The voters again spoke in the August 2015 Parliamentary election.
The voters realised that the culture of corruption/nepotism/impunity is without borders. The rest is history.
    .
Soraya M Deen: Your call “President Sirisena, You Are Not Fit To Be Our President”.
This is no more than emotive.
The next Presidential election will use the old language/religion-divide.
    SLPP is ready with it.
The voters have the choice of two bads.
    .
It is likely, Soraya may loose the freedom to express views.

Sri Lankan politics is a juicy target. Easy for anyone to throw stones at.

If you want to know about Soraya Deens’ motives, ask people you know, who live in USA.

Any two minutes of fame, is worthwhile publicity for her. She will straddle any subject that gives her publicity.

At the end of the day, it’s all about her moment in the limelight.

UPUL you are talking about failed common candidate project. Mangala Samaraweera, now Ranil and CBK step aside, was doing this for decades. This time also he has a humongous bank account that will be paid the country but he spends for the new common candidate project.
