Presidential Advisor Chris Nonis Mum Over His Rupees One Billion Heist

Advisor to President Maithripala Sirisena, Chris Nonis continued to remain mum amidst allegations that he had pilfered Rs. 1.1 billion in a scam.

Chris and Shelendra

Chris and Shelendra

Employees of the Agalawatte Plantations PLC of the Mackwoods Group have accused Nonis, who was the former Sri Lankan High Commissioner to UK and his lawyer sister Shelendra Nonis Ranaweera for pilfering Rs 1.1 billion rupees from Agalawatte Plantations PLC to United Kingdom.

Even though the Colombo Telegraph sent Dr. Nonis an email containing several queries two days back on the allegation, he is yet to respond to the questions.

According to the employees, Nonis, and his sister is alleged to have hoodwinked not only the poor estate workers, who presently have Rs. 400 million owed to them on statutory (EPF/ETF) and other dues, but also the shareholders and the Directors of the Mackwoods Group, by siphoning through Nonis’s privately-owned company APL Teas (Pvt) Ltd, unknown to Mackwoods shareholders.

APL Teas (Pvt) Ltd, is jointly owned by the brother and sister duo, who have equal shares of the company. Until last month when litigation commenced, employees and shareholders were made to believe APL Teas (Pvt) Ltd is a fully owned subsidiary of Agalawatte Plantations PLC.

Several senior employees, who wished to remain anonymous, revealed that from 2005 to 2015, APL Teas Pvt. Ltd. has siphoned out Rs. 1.134 Billion in the disguise of providing marketing and promotional services to Agalawatte Plantation PLC, but the revenue of the company has never improved with such services. All those fictitious expenditures are set off against the monies due to Agalawatte Plantation PLC.

With no mention of the true owners (shareholders) of APL Teas (Pvt) Ltd in the annual reports of Agalawatte Plantations PLC, doctor-lawyer duo has robbed Rs. 1.134 Billion and most of those monies have been transferred to the UK, under the guise of ‘international marketing, branding and promotional expenses’, allege employees.

Being UK citizens Dr. Chris and his sister Shelendra have formed several companies in UK that owns multi-million Sterling Pound assets purchased from siphoned-out money, it is reliably learnt.Mackwoods Plantation Employees engaged in a picket against Nonis

The employees also charged that there was an overnight change of ownership of Taprospa Resorts Pvt Ltd, where Nonis transferred 60% of Agalawatte Plantations PLC shares to a private company called Taprospa Holdings Pvt Ltd, which is 100% owned by him. Taprospa is the hotel arm of Agalawatte Plantations PLC that owns Billion Rupee Taprospa Foot Prints Hotel in Beruwala.

In November 2015, estate workers carried out a massive protest at Mackwoods premises in Borella demanding payment of their statutory dues (EPF/ETF) amounting to approximately Rs. 300 million.

Company sources say the Nonis-Ranaweera duo has also brought Dinesh Ranaweera, the husband of Shelendra to Mackwoods Group as the latest ‘partner-in-crime’. As per reliable sources, the trio are now doctoring the books, causing the delay of the Agalawatte AGM since the Annual Report requires to be published under the Companies Act.

Employees say it is now evident why Dr. Chris Nonis never stepped down from the position of Chairman when he was appointed as High Commissioner to the UK, an accepted practice when taking on a public appointment. During his tenure as the Sri Lankan High Commissioner for UK, he continued to oversee and control all key operations of the Mackwoods Group, particularly Agalawatte Plantations PLC, where employees are fully aware he had regular video conferencing from UK, and key employees made regular trips to UK to have discussions with him relating to Company matters.

Ironically, the employees lamented that Dr. Chris Nonis is a trustee of Prince Charles British Asian Trust and that contributions made by him were virtually blood money of poor Sri Lankan tea estate workers.

Dr. Nonis was appointed as Presidential Advisor by Sirisena in 2015.

The culture of corruption appears to be so pervasive and so deeply ingrained in Sri Lanka even the well-heeled, well educated, sophisticated and traditionally wealthy also appear to be contaminated by the virus in the air. Reminds one of the old saying when you sleep with dogs it is no surprise you wake up with ticks.

Well said Backlash . The poor is really poor and rich is filthily
rich in Sri lanka. There is no middle class and It is a sad state
of affairs as no body can stop this. Thanks to Mr.Modi, there is a
      middle class in India today.

Modi created toadies like his speeches created.

Nonis tea sells excellent at posh west end london. He did something there for himself. And reentered the fox’s borough.
Born to swindle the top what a pop in an island.

Mackwoods History carries a `precedence` – weeping widow SirMao stole the sterling company for Nonis in Laws back (his mackwoods history page carries a twisted truth.- pomp and fair.like Dr Liam Fox)

Bandaranaike was a socialist who continued her husband’s policies of nationalizing key sectors of the economy,
Further problems arose with the state takeover of foreign businesses, particularly petroleum companies, which upset the United States and Britain; they ended aid to Sri Lanka.
On 21 July 1960, as a Senator she became prime minister, thus becoming the first female prime minister in the world.

In spite of it, you’d find Sri Lanka’s poor being equivalent to 90% of Indians middle-class….thanks to successive governments that cared for her masses. Our standards are going to go way down after ETCA.

That is only a bedtime story for political kids, Grandma!

Lankawe poor people’s income is about(2013) 30,000 Rs. That is $200. Indian middle class’s income is about $13,500 (by 2013). Indian middle class is much bigger than Lankawe’s population. Tamil districts in Lankawe are the poorest districts in Lankawe. That means, to average out at $200, practically many of them should be having zero income. Batticaloa is about 21%. that is much higher than many African countries. Jaffna, Badulla,Amapari follows that record of Batticaloa.

Would let us go alone now after JR starving us for so long to make you feel happy, after all we held the 75% of the jobs? Are you happy now?

Thanks for Grandma’s prideful Appe Anduwa!

This was the main reason him to support Mahinda Rajakashes. There should have been wrong channels by which the good learnt doctor had earned the earnings. These men when they open their mouth pieces make every efforts to send the message as if they are so clean. I am fed up .. I thought the learnt one time physician may be an exception. But them to have earned multi billions but not doing the due for the poor workers as described above, is really beyond all morals and ethics. These men should be kept away from current regime.

Simon, read the report with the help of both eyes. If you have a week sight, get the support of a magnifying glass. Dr. Nonis is an advisor to the President My3 not to the gone man, Mahinda Rajapakshe.

Those adviser roles are just without responsiblities. You dont need to see it that way, may be curren president thought if nonis banda or any others fully established in the UK could help in the future – it is better ot keep everyone alert rather than making them enemies of the current govt. Besides, in the UK we have various other probelms too, we need established lanken born srilankens there to leave us proper information about tamil diasphora activities. See it in that way too, even if the bad guys are corrupted, they can still be helpful with supporting in that line. I dont think the way Mr. SIrisena moves, he would just be supportive to Nonis, if he finds him corrupted. This is new to both UK and SRILANKA. Perhaps, Nonis famileis will get isolated in the UK in the days to come. They though have close ties with Charles – all this can melt down within shorter period of time.
The difference is – Mr Sirisena if notices he makes efforts to correc thte guys, but contrary to this, MR had never made efforts to correct his cabinet minsiter. Alone that Mervin s amok runs or Toy pistol mayors incidents were positively evaluated by MR – please check it out by reading the new archives before going to help me with getting the cream.

Yes, this parrot was trained to spread good about Mahinda Buruwa. Esablished londoners are hired by MR regime to parrot lies.

Butthe parrot seems ot have no good qualities exposed. You guys further are on your regular mission protecting them and Rajaakshes further – Curse on you.

MAX – are u too blood related to Rajaakshes ?

Why you seem to be suffering from various pains when heavy rains of attacks fall on Rajapakshes ?

If the new appointee by MS at the CB carries a minute flaw of links with
a corrupt Rajaratnam – arising out of professional services then, how come
NONIS will be allowed to continue as a Presidential Adviser, from now on?

“Ironically, the employees lamented that Dr. Chris Nonis is a trustee of Prince Charles British Asian Trust and that contributions made by him were virtually blood money of poor Sri Lankan tea estate workers.
Dr. Nonis was appointed as Presidential Advisor by Sirisena in 2015.”

I wish that the man behind this write-up continues to present his Case to The Guardian (UK) Newspapers for a complete picture of NONIS in UK
circles and how well he may have robbed SL via MR?

I always believed the manner he praised Mr Medmaulana on CNN or other senders, there should be an over lucrative deal made between. Now it is becoming clear as to why ? So called Dr Nonis had not been appointed not to because he was a patriot but he seems to have his own plans.

This reflects the nature of society. Even today, MAX attacks the messengers.

Those posters of the minor workers ARTICULATE IT RIGHT ” api marenakam wada kora”. Meaning they have worked die hard for their wages. Any kind of blood sucking should be punishable. The play boys once scence with Queen Elisabeth, for them few millions are pea nuts, but for those labourers that sweat for their survival shold be focus. Please charles, your invovlement is obligatory here, to clear the issue.
Please god, see it right here and punish anyone that harm that much to the poor of the country and entire world. May your energies pour to clear the truth in these fund grabs, pushing the poor even much deeper. No cent can be valuable to the rich, if those are earned by unfair manner.

Yes, Agreed. The corruption in Sri Lankan society especially under the previous regime is cancerous that has spread at every level.

Corruption Even in the Extension of Sri Lankan visa.

There are makeshift studious just outside the Department of Immigration and Emigration, 41 Ananda Rajakaruna Mawatte, Colombo 10). It normally takes a few hours waiting for the process of visa extension. These studios want bribes to get that time shortened to half an hour. The visitors do not want to report or complain to the higher authority for fear of repercussion. How is it possible? Because of this underhand work the visitors who do not want to encourage this corruptive conduct have to wait longer than it is necessary.

If you talk to Chris Nonis he would respond with a affected English accent this thinking he was an English aristocrat. In reality the man is of mixed blood in a neither here nor there sort of cockaroch way! Now the bugger seems a bloody theif who has robbed his workers as well.Charles better kick the rouge from his Trust before Nonis bleeds it too.Readers can now just imagine what the chap did as Ambassador to England.

Mr. Pakeer Mohideen Amza hmmm there is something wrong somewhere here. You call yourself PAKEER MOHIDEEN AMZA and claim to live in Ankara while the person who wrote the comment calls himself PM AMSA and claims to live in Istanbul. So why are you so worried because you 2 guys are two different people.Or did you write that comment under the name PM AMSA and then now is trying to be different?Did Dr. Nonis give you a call?We know Nonis can do such things.

Remember a P.M Amza working in in the London Sri Lanka embassy some time back.Hope it’s not you because that guy was a Rajapaksa supporter who openly went to Colombo and worked in Katahnkudy in the 2010 president election even though he was a government servant and for that the fellow was made deputy ambassador. Then the man I think went to Belgium and did some terrible dishonest computer jilmart fraud and was I think interdicted .It was in the SL newspapers in the Internet.

Is there anyone close to former regime to be called as CLEAN. It is like searching for ABA – in a house where nobody died ? All these further prove how former allies of MAHINDA JARAPAKSHE have been. Birds of a feather flock together. Why cant they simply pay off the small salaries to these workers if they earn billions of sterling pounds ? Are they that heartless by birth ? These men living on the west, do the worst – acutally… no means trustful… if all these allegations are true.

Uncle Sam, is it applicable to the present President My3 as well since he was a key member of MR’s cabinet? And the interim Defense Minister, General Secretary of SLFP and UPFA as well during the previous regime?

      • 5
        1

Yes, it is applicable, but in the current bunch, we also see good guys too.. besides, current president is the representative to both giant parties as the elected president. However, you would not find a single person, neither within MR kith and kin circles, nor friends a person who could be normal – they are high profile money grabers. The reason is the backgroudn they come from: Once Beliatta rascal, even if he held posts of various ranks upto becoming President, his blood remained as it is.. the message he gave to the nation – as a tsunami embesszzeler was known to the entire world.. Google and find it more.. MAXes and Gonapalas, Buruwanses, will grasp it later, but all others turn their mind sets gradually onto right tracks. You will see it… like sun rises, and set, all these will become clear to the vulnerable sooner than later.

That is also fine for you. But .. for the sake of others, you may need to change.. But please never infect others to stay stupid as you have been sofar, That can help the masses to change their attitudes to betterment of their future.

Appointing NoMiss as a PA was on a DEAL with MR and it will take time for MS
to undo things – meantime even the Labour Dept. will not move against the
Estate Management re unpaid (rather unremitted) 300 Million rupees to EPF/ETF.
This raises the question as to the arrears due to the 2 Funds, at date. May
be billions. A List of those dues over one million, followed by 10, 20 ,30 etc.
should be published in the Newspapers by the receiving Authority – now Mr.
Indrajith Coomarasamy – an overdue task of an Official in Sri Lanka?
Leaving aside political ties, the Labour Dept. has to go to Courts immediately

We have become an island of corruption and dishonesty, which starts at the top. How many of these stories are coming out one by one, and every one shows we have politicians and their side kicks sadly lacking in integrity and only operating to benefit themselves and their equally dishonest families. They all need to dip their filthy hands into the kitty, to keep up their lavish lifestyles, while the poor man struggles to make ends meet. Nonis should have known better, being a man of standing and education, to not rip the system off, and even show a hint of dishonesty. How can other nations trust us? We look like some banana republic with easily corruptible leaders who can be bought for a song, to break the law. Shame on Nonis for representing this country, and doing exactly what other leaders are doing. We should investigate and find out exactly who the shareholders of these shady companies are, it may lead to the bigger fish.

We can predict that similar stories will come out after the present regime leaves. We are unfortunate people.

    Readers,

I have informed British Asian Trust about the allegations against Dr Nonis.

    Please do the same.

Easiest way is to mail them at info@britishasiantrust.org

Hopefully the trust already knows about this but additional attention will not hurt.

“With no mention of the true owners (shareholders) of APL Teas (Pvt) Ltd in the annual reports of Agalawatte Plantations PLC, doctor-lawyer duo has robbed Rs. 1.134 Billion and most of those monies have been transferred to the UK, under the guise of ‘international marketing, branding and promotional expenses’, allege employees.”

The alleged transfer of money to the UK might be illegal. This is something for the Financial Investigation Unit of Central Bank.

    Please comment. Thank you.

over the exit of Britain from the EU, Ex CB Governor Mahendran volun-
tarily went abroad while the inquiry was going on, on his conduct in CB but Mr. Chris Nonis sticks to the position of advisor to the President, amidst allegations that he pilfered 1.1. billion rupees in a scam. He should stay away from being an advisor to the President, with H.E’s permission, as this is a prestigious position ,until such time the allegation is cleared through courts or what means he prefers to get his name cleared. People should not feel that a tainted person is on the advisory board of the President of Sri Lanka.

British premier – case is political rivalry acts and the defeat

Lanken Governers – case is lanken media made him victimized. Not the expert. Even Auditor General cant draw the kind of conclusions, if he is the most experienced candidate to run the job – the issue it hyppothetical sums that have gone missing due to the decisions made by GOVERNER…but governer say the decision was taken by discussing with the senior men. Why to make him the scape goat here is politically motivated by anti Ranil fractions in lanken media.

Truth will come sooner than later to free Mahedran from the issue.

COPE is on the other hand not a legal entity to draw conclusions on the issue. They can also leave an opinion similar to Auditor general, however, Auditor general needs to be very careful making and creating the kind of issue, rabble roucing the nation but supporting more the sabotagers. That is no means professional basta.
