Presidential Elections: Tamils’ Choice

By Karikalan S. Navaratnam

Karikalan S. Navaratnam

There is little choice in a barrel of rotten apples.” ~ Shakespeare  (‘Taming of the Shrew’)

Massive media blitz has begun in earnest with reports on the impending Presidential Election. Rajapaksas camp (SLPP) has announced Gotabaya candidacy with much fuss and flourish. JVP-led Alliance (NPP) has, at an impressive rally, named Anura Kumara Dissanayake as their candidate. Even as the UNP leadership continues dilly-dallying, a self-proclaimed Sajith Premadasa has already hit the campaign trail. Media reports reveal there are few other aspirants of sorts.

Not even Hobson’s choice

Demonstrably, the marginalized Tamil citizenry have no one to choose from among the different candidates/parties. They have no choice; not even a Hobson’s choice. In fact, Tamil people are in a quandary. Whether they participate in or boycott the Presidential Election, ex facie  they do not stand to gain or lose anything  politically.  Should  they remain silent accomplices and facilitate the return of Rajapaksas’ ancien regime? A critical question, indeed!

Mahinda  squandered  opportunity

Post-war Presidential Election, Jan. 2010 propelled Mahinda Rajapaks to the zenith of power. He could have decisively resolved the ethnic issue and stood out as an exemplary statesman at a global level. Instead, with his Mahavamsa mindset, Mahinda fancied and indulged in triumphalism and tribalism; and thus, after the 2015 Election defeat, he stuck out like a sore thumb. ‘The Hindu” Editor N.Ram has been a bosom buddy of Rajapakes and had endorsed the military campaign against LTTE . Rajapaksas’ antics had exasperated even their buddy:

The military victory over the LTTE, and President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s strength in parliament, gave the government an unprecedented opportunity to put in place a progressive political framework to heal the wounds of a 30-year war, and address Tamil grievances that predate the war. That it has taken only nominal steps in this direction is a matter of concern even to friends of Sri Lanka, such as India, which stood by its military efforts against the LTTE.” (The Hindu, Editorial- 16 Aug. 2011 –“A brother out of control)

As a matter of fact, Mahinda had not taken even nominal steps!.

Few weeks before the Presidential Election, Jan. 2015, the International Crisis Group (Brussels) said in its briefing, inter alia, that: “Whoever wins in January, core questions around national identity – issues of devolution of power, of accountability and reconciliation, and of the equal status of Tamils and Muslims in a Sinhala majority state – will remain contentious. The will require deft handling if greater instability is not to result.” ( ICJ Briefing 145 / Asia 9 Dec. 2014Ethnic Q., a non-issue in Election, 2019 ?:

Five  years have elapsed since, the contending parties have neither the conviction nor the commitment to address “the core questions around national identity.” The issues facing Tamils may play only a negligible – if not a zero – role in this election. There was some perceptible level of public discourse around Tamil issues in the 2015 Presidential election and it did play a major role in securing the Tamil votes, en bloc, in favour of Maithiripala Sirisena. Relying on the ‘word of honour’ given by Chandrika-Ranil- Sirisena trio promising to address the  Tamil Issues, TNA chief Mr. Sampanthan did not even opt to sign a MoU with Sirisena before pledging TNA support to him.

Sucker punch by Maithri:

Probably Sampanthan was conscious of our bygone leaders’ nasty experiences vis-à-vis successive Sinhala leaders – coping with broken promises, breach of trust, betrayals  and treachery. True to tradition, His Excellency the President has even excelled his predecessors in exhibiting these traits. He has been dragging his feet over outstanding issues for almost five years, while deliberately ignoring existential threats posed afresh to Tamils in North-East by Sinhala-Buddhist zealots, military and the monks. In the twilight of his tenure in office, perhaps, remembering the solid Tamil support which enabled his ascendency in 2015, His Excellency has ex gratia, delivered a sucker punch to our  people- Yes, he has appointed as Army Chief  Shavendra Silva, who is accused of war crimes – the 58 Division which he commanded was, putatively, responsible for the slaughter of tens of thousands of Tamils  in the final blitzkrieg at Wanni – on the orders of the wannabe President !

Has Gotabaya mended his ways?

In a recent story, a noted BBC journalist recalls his meetings with Gotabaya on two different occasions- few days before he was named as a candidate and, previously, 10 years ago.

“I first met Mr Rajapaksa 10 years ago in Colombo during the final stages of the civil war. He was known for his volatile temper, and many journalists were too scared to ask him tough questions, especially questions about alleged rights abuses committed by Sri Lankan security forces.”

“But during our most recent meeting, even before he was officially nominated as a candidate, Mr Rajapaksa sounded like a different man. Sitting in his study, surrounded by books, he answered difficult questions calmly.” (BBC News, 12 Aug. 2019 – “Gothabhaya Rajapaksa: Sri Lanka’s controversial ex-defence chief eyes power By Anbarasan Ethirajan ).

Leopard does not change its spots

Either Gotabaya represents a double-faced/split personality or he has mended his manners and abandoned his bloodlust and aggression. Can the honcho and his henchmen in uniform be ever wholly humanized ? Lest we may forget the truism:

”A leopard doesn’t change his spots just because you bring him in from the jungle and try to housebreak him and turn him into a pet. He may learn to sheathe his claws in order to beg a few scraps off the dinner table, and you may teach him to be a beast of burden, but it doesn’t pay to forget that he’ll always be what he was born: a wild animal.” (George Lincoln Rockwell, (1918-1967), An American politician ; Founder of the American Nazi Party – 1959).

Patriotic” media  pining for Gota

Most of the media moghuls, commentators and columnists are fiercely ‘patriotic’- Rajapaksa/Weerawansa brand . They fall head over heels for Gotabaya and feel gung-ho about his candidacy and campaign. Why? Rajapaksas are the neo-avatarsof Dutugemunu. They defeated the Tamils, saved the nation and religion, restored Sinhala-Buddhist hegemony and refused to address or even acknowledge Tamil grievances. For a moment, forget about the scores of Tamil journalists who were abducted and  killed during Rajapaksas’ raj ; even their names have faded into oblivion, “unwept, unhonored, and unsung . After all they were “expendables” by Rajapaksas reckoning ! But, didn’t “pure Sinhala-Buddhist” media persons, except for few mercenaries, live in a climate of fear and terror under Rajapaksas reign? Many of them were abducted and murdered or maimed. Fearing for their lives, a horde of journalists, “SBs”, fled the country and obtained sanctuary in Western countries. I have personally represented some of them before Immigration Tribunals and the Federal Court.

‘White vans’ syndrome

The denizens of this country have known the fate of Lasantha,  Ekneligoda, Keith Noyahr, Poddala Jayantha  et al  and about Gotabaya’s alleged complicity. The pain and anguish of living with the loss of their loved ones and grief have emotionally traumatized and devastated the families and friends of the victims. Believe me or not ; to the Rajapakse acolytes from the media the pathetic pleas of families tenaciously seeking justice for the victims sound quite boring !

Columnist Malinda Seneviratne has been the beneficiary of a donatio inter vivos  a laptop gifted by Mahinda Rajapakse, paid for by taxpayers.( Colombo Telegraph, 21 Dec. 2013: Expose: Full List Of The Free Laptop Journos; Media Minister Lied To Parliament”)  Malinda’s musings, probably churned out from the same ‘loyal’ laptop, reflect “Mahinda Chinthana”. (EXCERPTS)

Dear Gotabaya Rajapaksa, what do you have to say about the murder of Lasantha Wickrematunge …….? ……..about white vans? Ekneligoda? Thajudeen? And how about the mausoleum built for your late parents? If these are the questions you were waiting for me to ask, sorry ……….”

“This is not about regurgitating the questions that Colombots, Kolombians, Rented Voices, Born Again Democrats, Candle Light Ladies put to the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) presidential candidate.”

“Gotabaya Rajapaksa is yet to be elected. It is quite possible that he will be the next President, the way things stand. This is why he can ignore all these questions. He would do well, however, to respond  (to other facilitative leading Qs Malinda has framed, on Geneva Resolution etc.) and make his responses the basis of the thrust of his campaign speeches. Better still, his political opponents can do the same…… As opposed to regurgitating invective that’s selective and therefore, frankly, boring.” (Daily Mirror, 15 Aug.2019 – “A questionnaire for  Gotabaya Rajapaksa ”)

Last fugitive

I believe, Ms. Frederica Jansz, Editor of Sunday Leader, has been the last fugitive to flee from Gotabaya’s wrath. She has since sought refuge in USA. The consummate telephone conversation between Frederica and Gotabaya on 5th and 6th of  July 2012   would bear testimony to the sense of civility, sobriety and equanimity of the Presidential hopeful. Details of the exchange given in CT(Colombo Telegraph, 7 July 2012 – Vide: Link below ) would eminently capture the spirit and soul of the conversation. Apparently,  Gotabaya has gained a mastery of the mafia lingo !. CT Headlines may give a foretaste and Illustrate the point:-  They Will Kill You – You  Dirty Fucking  Shit  Journalist” “ You Are Pigs Who Eat Shit ”– Gota Threatened Again.

Indeed, they strike terror!

Sadomachochism:

Sadomasochism is an interaction, especially sexual activity, in which one person enjoys inflicting physical or mental suffering on another person, who derives pleasure from experiencing pain. In other words, it is gratification gained through inflicting or receiving pain. Maybe, media persons – print media, electronic and visual – who crave the return of the ancien regime of Rajapakses suffer from a pathological condition – pining for pain and persecution – having nostalgia for the dark days of white terror !

Prof. Kumar David has, in his CT presentation, plainly stated the obvious: “ Tamils and Muslims will avoid  Gota like the plague and on the other side of the same coin hardcore racists and monks are pledged to back him to the hilt.” (Colombo Telegraph, 14 Aug.2019) He has also mused: “ the post presidential election period could be dangerous for democracy. I mean the possible election of Gota as president, but I do not consider a Sajith presidency as free of apprehension. The difference is that Sajith does not have marauding racists, extremist monks and military brass, all hounds of hell baying to be unleashed, waiting in the wings.” (CT, 25 Aug. 2019 ).‘Democracy’, to the extent it connotes a SB majoritarian number game, it has been our nemesis – the fountainhead of all fatal attacks on Tamils’ rights in Sri Lanka.  Again, Sajith’s credentials are not squeaky clean either, though not as wretched or wicked as those of an evil incarnate.

Gotabaya’s  offer to North-East

During his speech at SLPP National Convention Gotabaya was quite sparing andavoided specifics in his offer to address Tamil/Muslim grievances:  Vowing that he wouldn’t allow extremism to take root, Gotabaya Rajapaksa said that swift action would be taken to address the grievances of those living in the Northern and Eastern regions.” (The Island, 11 Aug.2019-“National security top priority”)

It is amusing to hear Gotabaya now talking about the “grievances” of the North-East people. Because he had always baulked at “the political solution talk” and harped on the theme that it was irrelevant after the decimation of the LTTE.  Editorially criticizing Gotabaya’s remarks, made in the course of an Indian TV interview, the Hindu (Indian daily) said:

Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s comments ………. reveal a troubling contempt for the Tamil minority. He has trashed “the political solution talk,” asserting, among other things, that it was “simply irrelevant” because “we have ended this terrorism in Sri Lanka,” making the egregious assertion that when the 13th Amendment was being drafted, “the government of Sri Lanka was not involved,” and proposing that with the LTTE “gone,” there was no further need to amend the Constitution. President Rajapaksa would be well advised to distance himself swiftly from his brother’s stream-of-consciousness on sensitive issues that are not his business.” ( The Hindu, Editorial-16 Aug.2011 –“A brother out of control”)

Let alone addressing our grievances ;  does Gotabaya understand the gravamen of our grievances? What are the track records of Sajith / Ranil ? And, what has Anura Kumara got to offer the Tamil people   ?

To be continued..

      Karikalan S. Navaratnam

Only recently I came across a poem which amply describes the state of affairs and the parochial mindset of the little islanders irrespective of their race(?), religion, region, gender, sexual orientation, ……………….

      Please read :

      Our Liberation
      What shall we gain comrades?
      What shall we gain?
We stand having lost all joy and
      youth
      We come burdened with
      trepidation and poverty
      What shall we gain?
      You called it liberation
      You called it independence
You said it was our race
You said it was our soil
      Countries have been liberated
      and gained independence
      Nevertheless in many countries
      the people have been beggared
      Comrades will we also be
      beggared when we achieve our
      liberation tomorrow?
      We have lost everything
      However, we do not want
      freedom only for a few
We do not want freedom with
      shackles
      We shall achieve liberation only
      after we shackle the animals
      amongst ourselves

For ‘your’ liberation from ‘us’ +50% of ‘you’ must agree for a plan which should include ‘our’ liberation from ‘you’ too. And always remember Sri Lanka is an island.

This poem has nothing to do with mundane corrupt politics of yours.
Actually the poem says “up yours” to people like you.

Those who philosophically inclined would have appreciated/enjoyed the poem
unlike the asses of the masses like you.
You may have to await another 2500 years to attain liberation.
Try Noble Eightfold Path, yet it is difficult for you.
          No harm in trying.

Or pull your head from wherever it is now.

Asoka was a Hindu when he committed atrocities and became pacified by Buddhism. Gota was a Buddhist when he committed atrocities, will he accept Hinduism and be pacified. He understands that he has to go along with BJP Hindu policy to survive.

If the guilty feeling bothers his conscious so much, the better option is to confess for the crime committed & give up politics altogether! Emperor Asoka did regret for the carnage before becoming religious. Perhaps GoRa will take a cue from him!

After winning the war and after winning the presidential election and the general election with a two third majority, Mahinda Rajapakshe had enough opportunity to solve the National problem once and for all and become a true Statesman (he could have even won the Nobel Prize). Everybody expected Mahinda Rajapakshe would be a genuine leader (a statesman) who will solve the National issue for good but everything changed (opposite to what people expected) after he won the 2010 election. Unfortunately he (along with his brother Gotabaya Rajapakshe) selected the option of following the path of a few Sinhala-Buddhist Ultra-Nationalist Racists and Pseudo-Patriots, thinking that by whipping up Ultra-Nationalism and Sinhala Patriotism among the majority Sinhala-Buddhists, and by threatening and further suppressing the Minorities (Tamils and Muslims) he can rule the country for ever as the hero of the Majority Sinhala-Buddhists. We saw how badly he failed, the Rajapakshes completely lost the support they had among the minorities and were branded as an anti-minority party. Even today the SLPP is considered as an Anti-minority racist party. At least now, the Rajapakshes should realize their blunder, they should put the country before everything else and end the National problem once and for all. At least now they should keep away from the Ultra-Nationalist Racists, the bankrupt politicians who ruined the former President Mahinda Rajapakshe and made him an anti-minority leader that finally lead to his downfall. Will the Rajapakshes change? Will Gota be worse than what he was? Can the minorities trust the Anti-minority Rajapakshes hoping that they have changed? Will the SLPP stop playing the communal card to the gallery? If the minorities select to vote for an independent candidate or if the minorities refrain from voting, it will be a walk-over (easy win) for the Rajapakshes. The minority leaders should think very carefully to whom they are voting because they are the actual king makers and it was proved in the last election.

If you see Gotabaya Rajapakshe on stage, you will always see him with the two worst racists Wimal Weerawansa and Udaya Gammanpila which proves beyond any doubt how Gota will treat the minorities. This Anti-minority Sinhala-Buddhist hero Gotabaya Rajapakshe (US citizen) is an Ultra-Nationalist Racist and is well-known dictator. When he was the defense secretary, it was Gotabaya who made Mahinda unpopular among the minorities. Even after the war ended, Gotabaya did not allow his brother Mahinda to solve the National problem. He used the armed forces in the North to control the civilians (a military rule). He created the grease devils and then the BBS to threaten and suppress the Muslims (BBS is a creation of Gotabaya). He used white vans to abduct and disappear those who acted against the government. The main person who made Mahinda Rajapakshe lose the election (by losing the minority votes) was none other than Gotabaya. If this dictator becomes the next president, it will be a military rule and BBS will be his personal advisers. Another Pol Pot in the making. However, he will not get a single minority (Tamils, Muslims & Christians) vote and the Sinhala-Buddhists are divided. Winning the election is only a dream for Gota and his dream will never come true. End of the day, he will lose both, his US citizenship as well as the Election.

On the other hand, Ranil knows very well that neither he nor Karu can win the presidential election. The only candidate who can stand up to Gota is Sajith. Anyway, unlike the Rajapakshes and Ranil, the Tamils do not know anything about Sajith. Is he capable of solving the national problem or will he also play a double game? Can the Tamils trust Sajith? Will Sajith be as bad as Gota when it comes to minority issues?

We have seen very recently how the Buddhist monks are openly harassing the Tamils, Muslims and Christians and the authorities were just ignoring them. Buddhist monks have self-appointed themselves as the religious police/vigilantes of the country with full control. Under Gota, they will be given full authority to intimidate and arrest people belonging to the minority community? The country will become a Buddhist Taliban society with all the blessings from the authorities.

    Vote for the independent group.

Best thing for Tamils is to abstain and let Gota win. It is easier to take on an enemy who behaves like an enemy practicing overt racism than an enemy who pretends to be a friend practicing covert racism. With 19th amendment in place Prime Minister will have more powers even to rein in the President with support of parliament. Already Mahinda has got frightened of BJP and said that he will implement 13th amendment in full and go beyond, in line with Modi’s order when he last visited Sri Lanka. Sajith is a nationalist like his father and is totally against sharing territory and power with Tamils in a just and effective manner. Sumanthiran who has shown that he is politically naive and Senathirajah for personal reasons will ask Tamils to vote for Ranil. There is no point wasting the vote for others who will be also-rans.

        Gnana,
I think that you are correct about GoRa; for, he tried to destroy anybody he believed to be an obstacle. My guess is that he will try to act like a changed man if get elected. But, the problem is that he can’t. That is b’cos, as the taped conversation with Fredrica Janz clearly shows, his problem lies within his own brain: A mental disorder known as “Bipolar Syndrome” which makes anger management impossible! In any case, I believe that Sajith will eventually get the UNP ticket and he will defeat GoRa handily.

You are using the term “nationalist”in the wrong meaning of “racist”. I think that Sajith is not doing anything different from minority politicians do which is pandering to their voting base.

I don’t agree with the way minority (pandering to particular ethnic group) politics is discussed in SL for a fundamental reason: It is based on the false assumption that the population must be secluded within ethnic boundaries. But, this is not the way politics should be conducted under democracy. Ii is time to change the SL political discourse to follow the tradition of advanced democracies where many different caucuses that represent different social interest are subsumed in two or three major parties. May be the major barrier against such a system in SL is economics that doesn’t encourage social mixing. Once the economy start to get going, this will change, I believe.

        • 4
          0

In the land of mother of parliamentary democracy, despite having a vibrant economy, there are ethnic based parties, because the so called national parties are primarily for the English. When it comes to issues concerning minorities, these parties will not take effective action. This is the same for Sri Lanka where the so called national parties are primarily for Sinhalese, and unlike in UK where the national parties have not done any harm to minorities, in Sri Lanka these parties have carried out discriminatory acts and sponsored violence against Tamils. There is adequate social mixing between Sinhalese and Tamils, but unfortunately there will never be enough resources to be equitably distributed among the ethnic groups, and discriminatory practice will continue in order to please Sinhalese who have the majority vote bank. Only way this can be managed is by sharing of resources by way of devolution of power and territory, so that they will be able to manage their own future and cannot complain of partiality.
Look at the way Tamils are prospering in Canada and UK, where there is no impediment to their progress, and I am sure Tamils and their areas in Sri Lanka will achieve the same prosperity if there is no Sinhala interference.

        Dr. Gnana
You are completely wrong about BJP. Prime Minister Modi’s close confidante and political advisor is none other than Subramaniam Swamy who is a very close ally of the Rajapakshes. Subramaniam Swamy is a Tamil Brahmin who hates fellow Tamils. Rajapakshes are his favorites. The BJP under Modi is not going to do anything good to the Tamils and the Rajapakshes will be very happy to work with BJP.

    Dear Karikalan S. Navaratnam,
    .
I empathise with your anguish, but there is little that I can say to assuage it. I plead with you to wait for the nominations, then let us see what can be done.
    .
There are a few things on the horizon, but they are still so distant and uncertain that I dare not mention them.
    .
You have referred to the articles by Prof. Kumar David. Kumar also is pessimistic about hopes for any tangible relief coming the way of us citizens. I accept the fact that it is much worse for a person if he is “a Tamil”. I’m convinced that we are one people -genetically – but speaking different languages. Yours is the older, but beyond that, I know little – I just don’t know any Tamil.
    .
For now, I suggest you do something the is constructive, even though you feel it is trivial. Please study how you can vote strategically at the Presidential Election using your Preferential Votes. I know that this will seem cold comfort to you, but it is sincerely suggested by me.
    .
Nothing ill can come from studying the system that we must use to rid ourselves of chauvinists and tyrants.

        Dear Eagle Eye,
        .
I’m glad that you have been forced to keep your message very brief. I’m not even curious to know what else you had to say to me. Your messages are getting most boring, because they are so predictable.
        .
Some people believe in some form of “after-life”. I don’t. However, I hope it penetrates your thick skull that you are identified by 95% of the few people who know you, to be an embodiment of evil who has done much harm to the 21 million people in this country who don’t think as you do.
        .
You have done all that you can to destroy this beautiful land which nature had blessed so abundantly! May every day bring your conscience the agonies resulting from knowing that otherwise good people are cursing you from the bottom of their hearts – accursed racist!

It has still not appeared, although something posted there has indeed appeared. I was all right on length.
        .
It will become a very worrying problem if we can’t have faith in the Elections Commission. I knew long ago about this ridiculous quorum of 3 with only 3 members. When the legislation was drafted the intention had been to have 5 members, but after three were appointed, the Government had forgotten all about these guys. Even about their allowances and perks, apparently. They get much much less than these M..P. fellows.
        .
I see that Karikalan has very sweetly said that I’m a sober guy. He’s only right to the extent that I’m a teetotaller; I’m considered to be an aged hot-head by most.

        PART TWO
        .
I didn’t want to give him too many hopes, but I see this Nagananda
Group as being most promising. There’s a Mobitel number on which the public can get information about their campaign. I’ve deliberately called it a Group because what I gather is that over the past few years about 200 non-politician professionals have been clubbing together, and one from among them will be the candidate. The guy who is likely to get the most votes. How different from the UNP mess!
        .
How much damage will Kumara Welgama inflict on Gota, I wonder?

When I look at the bankruptcy of Tamil electoral politics, I wish that the Tamils will sooner than later find a leadership with some sense of direction.
    *
They have been systematically misled from Day One.
What we see now is a culmination of decades of folly of competing nationalists with nothing useful to offer.
    *
Is any Tamil leader capable of arguing the case for or against any candidate in terms of criteria acceptable to all nationalities, rather than propose nonsensical fantasy in the name of Tamil interests?

      1

Where or who is the candidate in terms acceptable to all nationalities.?
      I think Karikalan is one.
Will Karikalan Navaratnam come forward as a Tamil leader and present himself before the people of this country?
What does he think of Sinhala_man’s constructive suggestion about Tamils voting strategically ?

        Eagle Eye,

The Sinhalese are not look-alikes; for instance, skin complexion, eye color, facial features/shapes vary very much among the Sinhalese. This is because they came from many different sources in many different forms such as invasions, invitees, marriage, immigration, spread of religions, trade contacts and so on. A part of them are from the ancient Kalinga migrants from Bengal/Orissa (Vijay and the other 700 convicts), another part of them are recent migrants from South India (Andhra, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala) and another part of them are from the Portuguese, Dutch and the British (mixed). Today they are all fully sinhalized and sasanized (Buddhistized).

Even DS Senanayake wanted to do the same, first to get rid of all the upcountry Indian Tamils and then systematically sinhalize the Ceylon Tamils by colonizing the Sinhalese in the North & East, and promoting intermarriages. The Tamils must be thankful to SWRD Banda for opening their eyes, by bringing the Sinhala only act. He woke up the sleeping Tamils.

Whatever one may say, will these candidates dance to the tune of Maharajas. No one knows how Maharajas will manipulate. Gotabaya Rajapakse has a bad record in violating the human rights of all communities and the majority Sinhalese community is now divided. But this time, it is going to be a difficult choice. However, I am of the view that Ranil Wickremasinghe will come forward as UNP’s candidate and will be supported by the Tamils and a section of the Muslims. Sajith Premadasa is not known to the West and India will not be happy with Sajith Premadasa. when considering the Indo-Sri Lanka Peace Accord. Sajith Premadasa has not made his comments on the Peace Accord. The West and India have a contributory role in the Sri Lanka Presidential election. As such when considering the developments taking place in the North, I think Ranil Wickremasinghe has a good opportunity but with a slender majority.

There is no use of writing about Tamils voting in Sinhala Buddhists’ elections. There is no change in this situation from 1970. If Tamils are going to help Sinhala Buddhist select a candidate, it may make sense. But still, helping Sinhala Buddhists make any sense for Tamils? No!

So we will not comment on the essay topic, but may on the side points. We all know the Court has not delivered its decision on if an election is due in December. There were news that Ranil, Old King and New King had agreed that they may not have a problem to postpone the election. It was said that Sampanthar has asked diplomats to delay the election and advance the Secret Solution making. We don’t know any of the details of these talks. Further, it may or may not about postponing, even if it may or may not due in December. So the question is, if it is due in December, how it can be postponed and if it was postponed, if that will be not illegal? Again we do not know what the court would say, irrelevant of how the election terms are worded.
Other than the JVP candidate no candidates’ status is for sure. There is additional or replacement candidate possible from Old Royals. SLFP has shown interest in placing a candidate. We don’t know if that is SLFP or SLFP – Slap party alliance candidate. So, again it cannot be confirmed if that will be Old Brother prince or New King or neither of them. UNP may support Old brother Prince or place on of its candidates. There is a possibility of two UNP candidates, one is Vaalaiththodam Jr and the other one, Ranil sponsored. Uncertainty is the reason TNA has not shown any inclination to negotiate with Old Brother Prince or others.

After the 1947’s first election, where Don Stephen bought all Tamil leaders with a cup of coffee and deported tea workers who had become unwanted for him, all other elections’ mottos were based on anti-Tamil Slogans. As the 2018 LG election was held at one date all over the country, even that LG election was campaigned on racial line. Old Royal got a massive victory in that by questioning Sinhala Buddhists if the Sinhala Mahajan wants one country or two countries. The meaning was if the Sinhala Mahajan voted for anybody other the Slap Party, the Secret Solution would become reality and the country would be divided. But it seems Sinhala Buddhists now have a feeling that they have completely killed any solutions for Tamils, ever, with that LG election.
So in the coming EP election, (if one so is coming soon) may not be on about to how to handle the Tamil minorities (neither the Muslim minorities). The main acid test to vote is which candidate is attached to what country and what their policy on international relation is. This is not related International trade, exchange rate, FDI or anything; but about Lankawe’s sovereignty & Security.
2015’s main election catchphrase was “No Leader, No Commander, No Soldier” would be prosecuted and advancing Thero De Silva’s May 2009 the resolution in UNHRC, instead of improving the 2012,2013 & 2014. Ranil started to deliver this promise by going to TTH and swearing to save Old Royal Family, on the election night of Jan 8th. But the minor point was, recovering from China the Colombo Pong Cing land. That was never fully achieved; instead even Hangbangtota was additionally sold.
In this election the direction has changed. Two top leading candidates appear to be pro-American candidates. But whoever less pro-American and more Pro-China would be treated as hero and voted for him to regain the country’s (, preserved as lost) sovereignty.

      Dear Mr Karikalan S. Navaratnam,
      .
I have googled your name and found you to be a most distinguished man:
      .
      https://www.einpresswire.com/article/444203807/a-sinhalese-a-veteran-tamil-political-leader-received-prestigious-awards-from-transnational-government-of-tamil-eelam
      .
The first time I read something written by Dr Brian Senwiratne it was him talking eminent common sense about “ragging”. I said something complimentary, and lots of others “came to my rescue” to warn me about this “dangerous lunatic”. I hope that gives you a sense of what we are up against.
      .
What you have written in your article, I find eminently rational and reasonable. Let me hope that I will be able to get back here and say something; such good intentions, unfortunately don’t get realised, but I’m grateful that there are people like you with us.

As I said here before, LTTE assassinated the top Tamil intellectuals, such as Neelan T. and Lakshman K. Now Tamils are left with Sampanthan, who is the Tamil equivalent of Joker Ranil on the Sinhalese side. Tamils, specifically the Tamil diaspora, have brought about their own predicament. Millions of dollars were invested in the Eelamist project – hiring lawyers to lobby Western governments to punish Sri Lanka, donating money to the LTTE to buy weapons, and running a sophisticated media campaign to spread LTTE propaganda. I have met Tamil diaspora youth who still wear t-shirts with the “Eelam” map. These youth have been told by their elders that SLG committed “genocide” against the Tamils. So the level of brainwashing from Eelamist propaganda is very strong, indeed. Like the Germans of the Third Reich, Tamils need to do some deep soul searching and acknowledge that they were victims of a psychopathic madman who led them down the wrong path.

Tamils think they are a privileged lot. Always ask for special things and more.

Tamils are never satisfied from anything. They want more and more. Don’t want to integrate and live with the Sinhalese.

These people who came from their origin, Tamilnadu to this country most recently should be kept in their place.

It is most Sinhalese and not the Sri Lankan Tamils who have their origin in Tamil Nadu and that too very recent origin. You must be one of them, as have noticed . Sinhalese with a very recent South Indian origin , are the biggest anti Tamils. Bilimoria or Sillymoria is a Parsi name ( at least in Sri Lanka) who the fack are you to comment about native Sri Lankan Tamils whose history goes to 230BC or even more , you recently arrived Parsi refuge bugger from Mumbai.

    • 6
      0

      Dear Geoffrey Bilimoria,
      .
I’m glad that you appear to have used your actual name.
Mine is known to most regular CT readers, and is always revealed anew each time it is requested.
      .
Not all Tamils came recently – certainly not most of those commenting here who are from “Jaffna”. And pray, when did the Parsi Bilimorias migrate here, also from India – which State you ought to know. And even to India, you probably came from Persia.
      .
Well, I’m just going on your name. My ancestors, as far as I know, were all from a little inland in the Galle District, along the banks of the Gin Ganga. So, not recent Sinhalese, but I know that we, and the Tamils are alike mongrels mainly from Tamilnadu. Tamil is the oldest extant language in the world, did you know? Unfortunately, the language is quite unintelligible to me.
      .
You, probably, are as much mongrel, but have sufficient sophistication to talk of “integration”. But have you integrated? I bet you Parsis are all Colombo based. Yes, we desire integration, but not with opportunistic racists like you.
      .
Should you dare cross my path again, I shall research you antecedents with a view to putting you in your place, bloody racist!

“These people who came from their origin, Tamilnadu to this country”

Correct, Tamils have their own state (Tamil Nadu) in India. 68 million people, why don’t they try to resettle there if they have such a big problem with the Sinhalese in Sri Lanka?

    What grievances ?..
Are they suffering from Un Employment?.
Are they suffering from LKR 20,000 per Annum Average Income?.
Are they suffering from the High Prices of Infant Formula, Dhall, Blood Pressure Tablets Doctors Fees,Rentals and a myriad of other essential items including the non affordability of Housing?.

If that is the case the SBs whom this Writer refers to as Zeolots who threaten Tamils in the North and the East, suffer the most although they are the great Majority among the inhabitants.

I know Dr Ranil made the Vellala Party the Opposition in the Yahapalana Parliament.although Sampathar had only I think 6 Seats of his own
In Which other Country in the World could that happen?.

Dr Ranil spent a Trillion Ruppiah perhaps, giving the Yahpalana MPs Free Ca Permits , Free Housing and other Perks ..
And brought his New Constitution hoping to sneak it in through the back Door of the Kotte Den.
But Dr Ranil’s New Constitution didn’t have any single mention of the above sufferings even as a preamble.

In the mean time the suffering went South , while the Vellala Party in Colombo tried to go for the North.
And the Muslims went their merry way alleviating their suffering with free housing and jobs for the boys in the East, and even a Mecca in Batticolao.
Although the rich Wahabis in Colombo who are close associates of both Dr Ranil’s UNP and Anura Kumara’s JVP put the spanner in the works, despite the Wahabis in Colombo and other Urban centers benefiting the most during Dr Ranil’s Four and a Half years of Yahapalanaya.-

Wonder what could have happened if if Mahinda Rajapakasa acceded to Vellala Party Leader’s demand , quote “Leave the Muslims to Me” when Rajapakadsa asked Sampathar for an amicable settlement after Mr Pirahaparan left Nanthikadal?..

I expected Amarasiri to write about Paras and the average IQ. The fact is that neither the Tamils nor the Sinhalas are fools. People can only vote for those who present themselves for election. What else can the people do?

Tamils (all Tamil speaking people irrespective of their religion(Hindu/Islamic/Christian), caste or the date of arrival scattered across the island) have squandered the political opportunity offered to them as equal INDIVIDUALS by our unitary Constitution and laws of the land by congregating as GROUPS based on ethnicity and religion. For their political masters these GROUPS are a comodity. Over the last 70 years Tamils have been conditioned to behave like cattle. Title of this article is the conclusive proof.

Choice? I suppose that is an illusion.
I think the best bet is to boycott the elections, rather than lend legitimacy to state oppression through participating in this farce. The problem, as far as Tamils are concerned, is structural and the lack of political will on the part of Sinhala polity to solve the national question. The end reality, regardless of who sits in that chair, is Sinhala military occupation of N-E. What kind of negotiations can you do while one party is forced to live under military occupation?

Ranil behaving is like a bad woman, who promises to many men to marry, take money from them & keep walking away, for last five years. Sumanthiran is the matchmaker. He was with West to gain power through regime change. He told he would repossess all contract Old Royals gave to China. Then he abandoned the West, made friendship with PM Modi. (Until that India and UNP were like snake and mongoose). Modi came to open the Diyatalawa Hospital. Then Ranil sold the Hangbangtota Harbor to China. Then he went back to Modi and got renegotiated the ETCA and other deals. Even New Royals Kantale Sugar factory bribe case came into this.
After that he returned to his local colleagues and worked on Coup. When Western Counties told him that they would like to recognize his government, he double crossed them. India was silently watching his games. India tried reestablishing its friendship with its old pals Old Royals. Ranil once again joined hand with Modi and tried to save his back from India’s suspicions. The Yahapalanaya organized the Tamil Churches bombing. The whole nations in UN were sacred of Appe Aanduwa’s game in hiring ISIS, so they all sent their intelligent units to check it out. About 10 nations sent their police to Lankawe. Fearing American FBI may over read any internal secrets Ranil sent his ministers, Mangala, Harsha, Tilak and others to USA.
Now his whole concern is not America, Not China, Not UN or UNHRC but India. India captured the Kashmir and attached it with its Federal Land. So, he just told to China’s People army and FBI to do whatever the heck they want and he is building a fence in Jaffna to stop India invading North East. For last two weeks, the whole cabinet is in Jaffna

      Mally,
      Fascinating stuff , mate.

Where did you learn all this?.

I thought Dr Ranll’s MCC corridor was the Fence.
And it was to protect Samaptha’r Homeland and Elite , Anglican & Vellala UNP Homelands mainly in the West .
After Wahabi Suicide Bombs on Catholic Churches , Dr Ranil obviously has work cut out to sign the Boots on the Ground and Full Immunity Pact for the US Forces..

Will US Forces protect the New Mecca in Batti. Will Sampathar accept it.
      That is just the beginning.

What happens if Dr Ranil and his Faction can not finish off Keselwatta Kid before the election?.
I think even Abraham must be on Panadol now.

“Dr Ranil obviously has work cut out to sign the Boots on the Ground and Full Immunity Pact for the US Forces..”

        Too bad.
However Dr Ranil has to first deal with retrospectively removing immunity from prosecution, say from 5th April 1971, including policemen, security services, Sirima and her merry men, JR, Prema, green tiger, himself, Muslim Home Guard, Sinhala/Buddhist home guards, Cyril Mathew, …. state functionaries, Janaka Perera, Sarath Fonseka, Udugampola, the many Single Handed uniformed Liberators, …… crooked politicians and their cronies (b***s carriers like you) ……………

Then of course reverse what American Citizen Gota signed away in 2007, which will guarantee no Uncle Sam’s boots on land.

No one can blame for voters to think the separatist terrorist murderers, their political masters, financiers and sypathisers will never change their leopard spots either. Therefore they may very well opt for a stronger leadership with proven credentials especially in the sphere of national security to provide safety to them.
Unfortunately Tamil voters have allowed them to be herded onto a single voting block to be sold to the highest bidder. They were sold an utopian dreamland where honey will pour in every corner. They were sold a myth that the real Karikalan (Velupillai Brabhakaran) is omnipotent…..is a God (Sun God to be precise) whom can never be touched by anybody. So the Tamils kept quiet including the writer when thousands of innocent men, women, children, young and old were slaughtered at the snap of fingers by the Sun God. They kept quiet when they were asked to send one each from their families to join Sun God’s army to bomb and kill the “other” without mercy. They kept quiet when their children who could barely carry a gun were sent to the battlefront to be slaughtered. They are still unable to fathom what happened to their dreamland and the Sun God. Their dispair has turned into a blind anger towards the national leadership of the country who made sure the fake God, the terrorist murderer and his mono ethnic, racist project was destroyed for good. in 2015 Sambandan was able to galavanise that blind hatred and sell the Tamil votes to a fake yahapalanaya at the bidding of India. It is no accident why John Kerry the US Secretary of State congratulated Modi for the change of govt in Colombo. That change certainly did not occur for the benefit of ordinary Tamils.

“………. financiers and sypathisers will never change their leopard spots either.”

True if necessary the criminal clan could finance and revive the LTTE for the purpose of misleading the voters, scaremongering. Some of the Pottu Amman’s fascist operatives were working directly under Gota. They could always lend a helping hand as they did in 2005 and after.

Don’t forget since Gota was anointed as the king recently the security forces have discovered weapons at least at 4 places. Was it real, coincident, accident, … or left there to be found.

Where is Pottu Amman (Shanmugalingam Sivashankar)?
Is he still sharing Gota’s bed?
Where was Shavandra between July 1987 – March 1990?
      Hiding behind his Grandma’s Back?
