Pseudo Reality Of A Triad: Kamal, Nalaka & Gotabaya

By Sarath de Alwis

Sarath de Alwis

Minorities are different. They must accept majority hegemony. They are less entitled than the majority. Once you buy this proposition, unacceptable behaviour becomes patriotic. Defeating the enemy is the highest moral imperative. Dehumanizing of the enemy, dehumanizes the patriots.

Has Ananda of Olcott turned in to an Orwellian animal farm? How did the Ananda purpose “අප්පමාදෝ අමතපදං; Appamado Amathapadan” construct maniacal minds, bent on an apocalyptic pursuit of plastered patriotism?

Who shocks you more? The Buddhist soldier running berserk or his applauding audience that includes a heavy carder of ‘proud to be Anandians’?

This is not about Major General Kamal Gunaratne. This is about the phenomenon – ‘Viyathmaga’. The label is a stroke of evil genius. It appeals to literate bigotry. Viyath Maga means Erudite Path. It testifies to the creative brilliance of the ‘Triad’ Gota, Nalaka and Kamal.

His pitiless pronouncement of exterminating those whom he disagrees with should not shock us.

Kamal Gunaratne has not said anything new. The man has painstakingly exposed the Sinhala Savage and Bigoted Beast that lurks in him, in his self-aggrandizing war memoir රණමග ඔස්සේ නන්දිකඩාල්’”- A Warriors Way to Nandikadal’. In this hefty volume, he has described in disarming detail, his prejudices, antipathies and his capacity for abominations.

He is no solitary beast on the prowl. He was applauded by his audience.  He took great pride in announcing that he, Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Nalaka Godahewa were products of Ananda College.

It is for other Ananda alumni to embrace or reject the ‘Viyathmaga’ ideology of murder in democratic debate.

At some point in the 68 years after independence, we have learnt to equate villainy and virtue. Gota beautified Colombo. So, what if he petrified shanty dwellers? Gota created Diyatha Uyana near Parliament. So, what if he ordered a firework display from a navy barge in ‘Diyathauyana’ on the night parliament was coerced into an unjust impeachment of a chief justice? Gota shut off access to critical websites? So, what? He imaginatively converted disused colonial period ware houses to house enterprising software producers.

He trimmed the grass lawns around Colombo regularly and may have trimmed a few prisoners, one or two journalists infrequently. Democracies evolving from autocracies face one principal peril- reminiscing the orderly order of management!

Viyathmaga has invaded the public discourse on constitutional reforms, peddling deceitful propaganda. Viyathmaga threatens death unless we accept their dictates in sheep like servility.

Its mastery of erudite nonsense, its access to financial resources and its grip on puritan fanatics both lay and ordained makes ‘Viyathmaga’ a movement that we ignore at our peril. They preach to a blinkered generation that needs to be reminded that the objective of a successful war was to , defeat an armed call for  separatism.  Its ideology can be defeated only by redefining the boundaries of governance by redrawing the boundaries of competing cultures. It is not about geography or numbers. It is about the natural law of human dignity.

Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Nalaka Godahewa and Kamal Gunaratne represent the core evil that enveloped post war Sri Lanka. It was a coalition that reshaped our environment – natural, financial and managerial. Now they wish to comeback.

The possibility is frightening. If he makes it, will Gota allow dissenters to seek redress from the Supreme court for possible infringement of fundamental rights. Unlikely.

‘Viyathmaga’ claims to be a “network of Academics, Professionals and Entrepreneurs who love the country and wish to contribute actively towards the development of a prosperous Sri Lanka where all citizens can live in peace and harmony”. (viyathmaga.com Professionals for a better future)

The ‘Viyathmaga’ is puppetry in grand scale. The former Defense Secretary is the grand puppeteer. He commands a substantial Sinhala Buddhist Constituency. He is clearly the choice of the Buddhist clergy. ‘Viyathmaga’ is expected to give him the competitive edge by enlisting the professionals, academics and entrepreneurs.

Principal marketer of Viyathmaga is Dr. Nalaka Godahewa, former head of the Securities and Exchange Commission. He now heads a corporate consultancy firm. He is a multi-qualified business professional. His LinkedIn profile attests that he “has a proven track record in transformational leadership”

As stated earlier, this is not about the retired soldier Major General Kamal Gunaratne. It is an attempt to understand the phenomenon that brutalizes Sinhala Buddhist Soldiers, Academics, Professionals and Entrepreneurs who can sanguinely applaud killing those whom they disagree with politically.

This is about unravelling the warped minds of otherwise accomplished people who are ready to follow a once upon a time soldier who on reaching the rank of Lieutenant Colonel obtained his release from the army and migrated permanently to the United States at the height of the war.

Ananda is, no doubt a great school. It has produced outstanding scholars, professionals, academics and soldiers. But it has in parallel spawned a Sinhala cultural DNA that is parochial and intolerant in its world view.

Determining life values is a process. In reacting to a situation, we unconsciously apply our life experiences gained at home, in school and in the community. Looking back, we realize that the sharpest life experiences etched in us are those from school.

Ananda has molded opinions and imparted values. In defining Sinhala Buddhist ethnoreligious identity, Anandians hold an exclusivist point of view. By itself it is odd, but we can live with it. Then they go a step further. They not only defend their opinion but simply fail to comprehend how anyone else could think differently.

Sri Lanka is not the only country where the post-colonial nation state is grappling with the task of constructing a single sovereignty where before colonial conquest there existed multiple sovereignties or multiple autonomies. Identity politics is common to emerging democracies such as ours and the so-called discoverers of the process. Those lands struggle to reconcile with diversities of their own making. We are struggling to come to terms with diversities bequeathed by colonials who classified an otherwise harmonious polity for administrative, exploitative convenience.

According  to retired Major General Kamal Gunarathne, the bodhi poojas conducted by his dear wife at the Bellanwila Temple made him march to victory. He does not explicitly state that the soldiers under his command did less. His primitive tribal mind tells him that it was his wife’s supplications at the Bo tree at Bellanwila temple that mattered more.

Now, the poor soldier patriot is further fortified in his folly. Most Venerable Professor Dr. Bellanwila Wimalarathene has warned that power devolution will prompt a Northern province Chief Minister to scrap the Poya Holiday.  Science dismisses lunar lunacy. ‘Viyathmaga’ wouldn’t.

Wiyathmaga or Wipathmaga will never succeed even if those men would greedily wait for it to be the reality. That is clear to me even more today than few weeks ago.
But I really dont know, our masses can easily be manipulative further.. They would easily bend their heads down just for a rice packet or a glass of arrack. This is common in entire devleoping fauna. These we noticed on the MAY day parades 2017 last. Remember ?

      Great write-up, Sarath.

What if there were no schools and people had to teach themselves? Perhaps, SL would be spared a whole raft of problems.

Gota’s run for the presidency is a non-starter. His greatest adversary is no one but Mahinda. ………… Mahinda wants to set the stage for Namal.

Have you noticed that of late Dayan has gotten off the ‘Gota for president’ bandwagon? Mahinda had told Dayan in no uncertain terms and in his renowned Buddhist vocabulary what he thinks of the whole enterprise.

Dayan is left to look for another avenue of employment. Gota is out.

You don’t need a weatherman to tell you which way the wind is blowing. Dayan unwittingly always does a better job.

Never a dull moment in the sunny isle of paradise.

Why things stay stand still in today ‘s context.

where is the justice they proclaimed prior to coming to power `?

I THINK EVERYONE WITH A LITTLE BRAIN SHOULD CONDEMN THE HARM BEING DONE TO THE VICTIMIZED FAMILIY THADJUDIEEN

The family of the murdered ruggerite Wasim Thajudeen says that they are currently contemplating what should be done with regard to the lack of progress in the case, including whether they should totally abstain from participating in Court proceedings.

A lawyer representing the Thajudeen family said, that they were thoroughly disgusted over the lack of progress regarding the case. He explained that there was a high probability that the family is likely to refrain from attending the next two or three Court dates, when the case is taken up.

The family may make a public statement in this regard, the Attorney-at-Law noted.

“This is a farce. Former Chief Judicial Medical Officer of Colombo, Dr. Ananda Samarasekara was granted bail. All the information regarding the killing is available, yet it is not being pursued. The family has gone through the pain and agony of exhuming the body of their child despite religious reservations. Justice must be done,” he explained.

Dr. Samarasekara was initially arrested over his alleged involvement in the missing body parts following the post-mortem of the victim.

The sister of the deceased, dental surgeon Dr. Ayesha Thajudeen said that the family was extremely pensive at present, and is considering the next step, adding that in a week or two they may take a decision.

See Simon this is what happens when you give a shaving razor to a monkey. Do you see how the text after your comment has become bold. I gave the trick to the Hydra head Samson and he passed it over to the Hydra head Simon. And he f…. it up.

Good thing the comment was corrected by someone else. Simon cannot write 2 words without making 3 mistakes.

So, what are you going to do now about this stupid mess you made? These things are not so easy as cleaning toilets Simon. The whole fracas can be explained by one word – low caste. Can you correct things?

What tricks have you been refering here ? Bolding the text is familiar to anyone who is just known to HTML or other web languages. I really dont know why you write the kind of comments using my name ?

Hydra Headed Bathgamaya: If you insist I will get the evidence. It may not be you. But it was a Hydra head. Whether it is Simon, Samson, Sama, Punchi Burampi and so on it does not matter. It is one and the same stupid Bathgamaya.

In the meantime, if you are such an expert in HTML, why not try to correct it the text? Now I can see the Bathgamaya running here and there in panic, shit scared, scratching the smart phones wildly trying to find someone to correct it.

Anyway, don’t f… with HTML. There is no point. It will be the same stupid comment. A donkey is a donkey whether you colour its hair or not.

Great article, as always. Not amany majority population will agree with their warped, polluted and poisoned mindset. It will be a long struggle making them understand the concept of a right thinking person’s mind.

What is the difference between an educated & an un-educated person if they both are blinded by racism & bigotry ? There seems no light at the end of the tunnel yet ! Very sad to say this.

Simon De Silva: Your question: ” Why things stand still in today’s context”? The answer is very clear and well known. The answer is: It is because of an “UP SCALE” understanding and undertaken made known even during the ex Minister of Justice tenure in office viz. “I will not allow any Rajapakse to be arrested”. That “Understanding and Undertaking” still stands, even though the said Minister had to relinquish his job. I believe, that Minister “Echoed” that “UP SCALE” “Understanding & Undertaking”.

    Mr. De Alwis,
    Great article.
“Ananda is, no doubt a great school. It has produced outstanding scholars, professionals, academics and soldiers. But it has in parallel spawned a Sinhala cultural DNA that is parochial and intolerant in its world view. “
Yes, there is a curious nexus between Ananda and violence. Everybody knows which boys school causes the most mayhem at Big Match time. Why did this sort of attitude not take root at premier Buddhist girls schools like Visakha? Visakha produced many decent ladies , Kishani Jayasingha for example. But then, Visakha had Mrs. Pulimood as Principal while the likes of Mettananda and Kularatna ran Ananda.
I wonder what old Olcott would think of today’s Ananda and its output?
On the other hand, what would the Buddha himself think of those who claim to be propagating his doctrine?

    • 1
      1

More Bull c&@p! Old codger, Visakha had many many principals since Mrs Pulimood, unless Ms. Kishani J is 70 years old she would have been at Visakha long after Pulimood years..mate, remember the common adage ” right about things you know”.

Olcott would have been proud of Ananada, which continue to produce decent human beings who are trained to be patriots as opposed to some of the selfish, cowardly, imperial boot-licking Royals, mostly a ” pack of mercenary wretches, and would like Esau sell your country for a mess of pottage” just as Cromwell said.

        Wanni,
“Old codger, Visakha had many many principals since Mrs Pulimood, unless Ms. Kishani J is 70 years old she would have been at Visakha long after “
Mrs. Pulimood was at Visakha till 1967.
The influence of great teachers lingers on in their schools. There was no such person at Ananda. Name one multi-cultural personality of K.J’s status produced by Ananda? All we have are half-baked legal eagles, murderous military men , dubious Sinhala-Buddhist “intellectuals” , crooked politicians and of course regularly rioting schoolboys every March.

Speaking of an Army “Hero”, this bit must be of interest to those avoiding criminal
investigations and take cover in advance under “Viyathmaga”….

“Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera has said that Gunaratne’s book published a day after he retired from the army last year provided “evidence” of war crimes committed by Sri Lankan forces while battling separatist Tamil Tigers.

The 741-page “Road to Nandikadal” was a catalogue of atrocities committed by government forces since early 1980s, Samaraweera had said. Setting fire to homes of Tamil civilians, killing innocent civilians and plundering valuables from homes under the guise of cordon-and-search operations have been listed by Gunaratne in minute detail.

The minister said the language used by Gunaratne also indicated that he derived pleasure from seeing the death and destruction around him, and in his own words he had admitted that as an officer, he did nothing to discipline soldiers under his command.

Gunaratne’s original army unit, the Rajarata Rifles, was disbanded for indiscipline and excesses, but Gunaratne himself escapes punishment according to his book and the unit emerges as the “mighty Gajaba Regiment.”

It is unfortunate that Gunaratne has used the Viyathmaga stage to drag his lama mater into another controversy. Previously he used a facility in the school to introduce his publication and inviting MR, GR,…… but not SF, another Anandian who was his immediate supervisor for obvious reasons. The civil war ended back in 2009 but still there is a tussle going on between GR and SF to get credit as to who was instrumental in bringing it to end just to make use of this for political gain. It appears as if they haven’t been able to shed the “Bala Thanha” or the “rage” shame on you and embarrassing for the premier buddhist school. The present teachers OBAs, parents of Ananda should show maturity and act independently and should not get caught in party politics these ex-anandians are engaged in and thereby tarnishing the good image of the school.

Viyathamga has a nice website and Godahewa with his marketing experience is doing his best to hoodwink the pubic and make the movement popular. It is interesting to know why Dayan Jayatillake and Weerasekara are missing at the recent meeting although ex JHU member Yahampath has been baited in mainly to promote the message among females.

Nalaka Godahewa was the former Chairman of the SEC and a close associate and business partner of Dilith Jayaweera. Can anyone let us know who belonged to the “Stock Market Mafia”, a term used by Tilak Karunaratne. After a humble beginning How did Dilith Jayaweera and he obtain so much wealth or were they merely managing MR/GR loot? Isn’t he same person who managed the SLIC under Harry and was fired for unknown reasons then came back after getting SLIC acquired by the MR government. Apparently he is owning the home nursing services of Kotelawala and can anyone tell us how he ended up with this?

I am not surprised at all with an Alwise’s tirade against Sinhala Buddhists and education institutions that allowed the marginalised majority of the country, Sinhala Buddhists to re-assert their rights. Alwis would be very happy to be governed by colonial hangovers from their premier colonial institute, Royal College (& their fellow Bridgetians) propagating a neo-colonial worldview. After all he voted for it. Didn’t he? Alwis has no qualms about his royal masters murdering (and burning them in tyre pyres or throwing into rivers) thousands mainly Sinhala Buddhist youth not in one “Batalanda” but many of them while he certainly has problems with a soldier killing an enemy in the defense of the country. While Alwis (and his fellow travelers) knows who his enemies are, sadly most Sinhala Buddhists still don’t.

When Ananda College was founded in 1886, my Elders tell me they have seen no reference to Sinhala Buddhists. It was a manufactured identity which was imposed by fascist admiring handful of racists on wider Sinhala community.
The Motto of Ananda College was :
      “Heedfulness, punctuality leads to Nirvana.”
Not “Sinhala Buddhists to re-assert their rights. “

Hela, as part of the noisy fascist minority your contribution to perverting history is welcome by your fellow Sinhala/Buddhist fascist but not by the wider community.

Mate, just go home or if you are home stay home and read about Olcott and his mission. You are embarrassing the old school tie again! Ananada was established as a Buddhist school and since there were no non Sinhala Buddhists it defaulted to a Sinhala Buddhist school.

        Veddo,

May be your royalist bedfellows would swallow the ignorant garbage you write. 99%+ Buddhists in Sri Lanka are Sinhalese. The term Sinhala Buddhist emanates from that context. Come out from your “Binthanne” mental hide out and look around. Certainly your writing indicates how ignorant your elders were to produce a brat like you. They didn’t seem to have any idea of the history of Ananda and the historical context of it’s creation . No surprise there…….

“Buddhists in Sri Lanka are Sinhalese.”

Buddhists are Buddhists because they adhere to the awakened one’s teaching. Buddhists are Buddhists mostly their way of life revolves around Buddha’s teaching.

Sinhalese are Sinhalese because they developed a language and communicate with each other in that language.

Buddha, the awakened one didn’t create a fascist religion called Sinhala/Buddhism.

Sinhala/Buddhism is a manufactured bogus identity. It served and serves only the crooks and fascists. I come from South hence I know what I am talking about.

            Hey Vedda the serial liar,
Do not twist and distort what is being said. The term Sinhala Buddhist is used within the context that 99%+ Buddhists ARE Sinhalese in Sri Lanka (that is a fact). It is you and your local masters/mistresses (RW+CBK and the puppet, the modern Don Juan MS) and foreign masters who promote fascist, mono ethnic and separatist ideology in SL.

A new constitution has been used as the ramming rod to achieve what you buggers (veddas, Alwises, Van Der Pootyns, Sambandans, Sumanthirans, Thisaranees etc) failed to achieve through war. Large segments of the population have seen it through (your amude cannot cover it). Since parliament does not reflect the will of the people due to various super democratic maneuvers of your beloved majarapalana junta (by bringing in loosers, creating a bogus national govt to bribe the MPs with various portfolios, shutting the true opposition and robbing their democratic space as willed by the people), the battle is moving outside of the parliament. The consequences could be another tragedy. The responsibility of it will be on you and all your fellow servile colonial bootlickers.

Lol Native Vedda, Royalists have turned the country right now a royal mess! Its a fact and it’s visible. Everyone can see that by their own eyes including ‘one eyed’ dumb like you who see everything in just one eye. Bdw, are you a Royalist in the calibre of Viggie, Sumantiran, Ranil Wicks, Ravi K? Accept my sympathies!

“Yes Anandians gave their lives for you people to sit and write nonsense in the comfort of AC rooms. “

I am sorry, do the armed forces have a stringent policy of recruiting only Anandians and none from other schools?

      Its bloody discrimination.

By the way will you stop bull s****ing.

Sarath, well stated. What a lunacy prevailing among Anandians and the politicians. They will form a superb anthropological asylum if the people sympathize.

“The Sri Lanka Amarapura Maha Nikaya in a statement on the Constitutional Reforms Steering Committee proposals and the alternatives if implemented would downgrade the present status afforded to Buddhism”

LOL this is the biggest problem !

Sarath is on a mission to smash everything Buddhist to bits . He started with the sangha , now on to Ananda . As someone said earlier , the war was fought and won by products of Dharmasoka Ananda , Nalanda, Maliyadeva , Dharmaraja , DS …. and hundreds of thousands of village youth – hardly the types he used to hang around with in C5 in days of yore .

“Minorities are different. They must accept majority hegemony.”
Of course, minorities are different and that’s why they are called minorities. However, they don’t have to accept majority hegemony but they have to accept the fact that there should be a logical balance between modern democratic principles and century-old traditions, (cultural beliefs, and Majorities’ humane attempt to co-existence) that turned people to nations and land to unitary countries.
I respect Sarath de Alwis as a writer/journalist but he doesn’t seem to understand why western politicians like Hilary Clinton had been trying to bulldoze small nations and their traditional cultures by arming the minorities in those nations. Today, western media are crying for Rohingyas! Do you think its a genuine cry?
When independence was granted to African states, a famous western leader said: Let them have their own armies, but don’t give them the authority to run the media’.
In SL, armed forces have done their job; but have the media done their part? If not, why?

Viath Maga needs a small correction. You need to add only one letter- A. then it is ok
Most of today anandians are anti US.. If Col Olcott knew what was in store after 100 years he would have not started Ananda College!

The story of Ananda that Alwises try to distort…………..
The founding of Ananda College in 1886 was the high point of the national revival, which stretched throughout the 19th century……… Blatant discrimination against Buddhists (or, more correctly, non-Christians) and efforts to deny their children modern education in an environment free of proselytisation pressures, were to a great extent defeated. Ananda, and the many schools it inspired, under a formidable band of principals and teachers changed the face of education over the ensuing decades providing opportunities for the exempted masses to compete on an equal footing.

In the oppressive climate that existed following centuries of subjugation, most Ceylonese had lost their self-esteem. At the time Olcott first arrived in Galle on May16, 1880 the Buddhists were still a long way behind in terms of modern education and competence in English, the official language. Olcott in his diary recorded his arrival as “the beginning of the second and permanent stage of the Buddhist revival begun by Megittuwatte, a movement destined to gather the whole juvenile Sinhalese population into Buddhist schools under our general supervision”. Thus, it is clear that the discussions between Olcott and the venerable monks had already recognised modern education as a high priority.

Ananda was the proud outcome of their efforts……………

At Ananda, although the medium of instruction was English, Sinhala and Pali were given emphasis and traditional arts and crafts, music and drama were included in the curriculum. Tamil was also given a leading place and an active Tamil Association and a Tamil Literary Society operated in the College until the mid-1950s by which time the opening up of more Hindu English-medium schools in the north reduced the number of Tamil students at Ananda. The College magazine too had a section in Tamil. Workshops were established to encourage and develop manual skills through working on wood and metal and instil an appreciation of the dignity of labour. These were all novelties in the established schools at the time. Another innovation at Ananda was the conducting of English classes for Buddhist monks. Although controversial at first, the beneficiaries formed the vanguard of monks that helped spread Buddhism abroad.

Ethnic or social discrimination is not in Ananda DNA which Alwises try to hide…………

Recent Sri Lankan history is covered with a grim picture of a conflict based on ethnicity. Anandians played a major role in providing military leadership in crushing LTTE by May 2009. Though some (like Alwises, Veddas, Van Der Pootyns) try to paint a picture of a chauvinist Sinhala Buddhist School which is against Hindus, the true picture of Ananda is quite a contrast.

Leading Lawyer S.Sundaralingam, a Hindu at a ceremony of the Thibbatugoda Bodhimalu Temple on 06/02/2000 said “what did my father do when, leading Sinhalese sent their children to Jaffna school to get good English education, he sent me to Ananda College. My fathers’ best friend Sagara Palansooriya took me to Ananda. When I studied at Ananda, Sinhalese Buddhist, Hindus got togetherunder one roof, and we were immensely happy. Why can’t we even peacefully exist now?”

This statement is borne out by the distinguished Old Boys Register in Ananda College Golden Jubilee Souvenir(1936) where names appear as S.Amirthalingam(Law College, Colombo) T.Balasingham(Student-at-law) U.N Coomaraswamy(Law College, Colombo) S.Kangasabapathy(Proctor, Chunnakam) P.Nadarajah(Proctor-Negombo) M.C Raju(Proctor, Colombo) K.Shamnyam (Bar-at-law, Colombo) V.Shivasubramanium(Advocate, Jaffna) K.Subramaium(Law student, Colombo) C.Thanabalasingham(Proctor, Pt.Pedro) and S.Vellaiten pillai(Law student, Colombo). This not only negates view of chauvinism at Ananda, but clearly demonstrates the contribution of Ananda………. irrespective of race or religion.

You mean all those Hindians who helped to win the war were old Anandians? Another important person who won the war for MR was VP. Was he an Anandians?

GR retired from the army 23 years after leading soldiers in battle with SL’s most formidable regiment- Gajaba. Many others did so too when the IPKF invaded SL with JRJ/UNP’s consent. It was JRJ who is not from Ananda who declared war not on the insurgents but the Tamils. 100,000 were killed. In 1989-90. 60,000 Sinhalese were killed.who were responsible? In May 2009 295,000 Tamil hostages of the LTTE were rescued. Were Anandians not responsible?.Gen KG only informed the audience what the criminal law prescribes for treason. That is the law.Do you want it changed to help those who commit treason? Words don’t kill.
