Quo Vadis? – Feeding The 225; Don’t Wait For The State; Let’s Act On Our Own

By Kumar David

Prof. Kumar David

This has been the most rainy and squally Vesak that I can recall in my eight decades on this planet and it has made me grumpy. The depression in the Bay of Bengal has prepared all of for the couch of some psycho-quack conning folks with fictitious talk of depressions. This essay is in two separate parts unconnected with each other; a) Feeding the 225 and b) people taking the initiative into their hands and not relying on the state.

Feeding the 225

Jesus fed 5000 with two fishes and five loaves (Mathew 14:13-21) and you may reckon that to be a great achievement but he did it only once. Our people in Sri Lanka have to keep feeding the 225 day-in-day-out every day of their lives. And where does it all go? Into political pockets! Import permits for luxury cars, insurance cover for wives, mistresses and sons and of course plain rip-off.

A sharp middle-aged lady mounting the steps of the Dehiwala-Galkissa Municipal Council alerted me. “Why madam do you look unhappy?” I foolishly asked only to be told-off in pristine Sinhala: “Aiyo, 225-ta kanda dena oone ne” (We have to fed the 225, don’t we). Only then did the penny drop. Bribes to left of us, bribes to right of us! The 225 themselves, their catchers and hangers-on (petrol allowances, salaries for aides and drivers), liquor shop permits and Gamage-type rackets that the SJP pretends it knows nothing about). In total the 225 may be cashing in a few million rupees per MP per annum. How many MPs in the current parliament are clean of such nefarious behaviour? I think less than a dozen.

Now that I am about it, a little more politics. I was, I think, the first person who more than a year ago said very firmly that the presidential election would come down to a race between RW and Anura; and it has. Sajith is wailing in the wilderness and the SLFP and SLPP are weighing the prospects of whether to line-up in the RW or Anura camps. Neither SLFP nor SLPP dare put forward a candidate of their own for fear of being wiped out and polling a minuscule number of votes. It seems increasingly likely that both will plonk into the RW camp. Buffalo Lal Kantha’s pronouncements have made this more likely. He has in addition claimed that only the JVP and the Udaya Gammanpila party took a stand against the Tamils, opposed any form devolution and supported the military in the war against the Tigers. The import of his words is this. The JVP-NPP is going to be identified at the polls as a Sinhala party and this will have consequences. Will it draw the already radicalised Sinhala-Buddhist youth in larger numbers into the JVP camp or will it damage the JVP’s image? Time will show.

The upper and business classes and the city middle classes are cheering for Ranil. They are hooked on the idea he will be able to deliver economic growth. The Economic Transformation Bill and the Public Financial Management Bill tabled in Parliament on 22 May are intended to reassure the IMF that the road to reform that the Fund has demanded will be diligently implemented. The Fund will then unlock billions of dollars now blocked and also expedite deals with Sovereign Wealth Funds deemed necessary it is claimed to reassure the IMF and international capital. The Governor of the Central Bank is singing the same tune and has joined Ranil’s choral group. It is likely that the duo will float the rupee open-up the economy and privatise galore in the coming period. This will have political consequences.

Let me make a summary of the principal tasks facing the nation.

1. It is conventionally opined that debt restructuring, unlocking billions of dollars in IMF Funds and reaching agreement with Sovereign Bond Holders (profit seeking finance companies) is sine qua non.

2. Increasing earnings from foreign trade, meaning increasing earnings from export (including remittances and tourism) and limiting imports (except production machinery and raw materials for production), is considered vitally important.

3. Frugality in consumption (to the extent feasible with poverty ravaged masses) is desirable.

4. These three steps will it is hoped attract foreign investment into productive sectors.

None of this is new, it is all the subject of interminably long and boring newspaper columns. (When will our columnists learn that brevity is the soul of wit?)

RW is singing along to this tune and his confidence in saying NO to parliamentary elections before or simultaneously with the presidential poll shows that he believes he is playing from a strong hand. He is indulging in populist measures like issuing free-hold land title-deeds to landless Tamils in the Kilinochchi area, making attractive promises about enhancing facilities at the Jaffna Hospital, and insisting that plantation companies honour his pledge to workers of a minimum wage of Rs 1000 per day. RW is gaming that in a presidential election well over one and a half million Ceylon Tamils, Upcountry Tamils, Muslims and Catholics will vote for him and tip the scales in his favour. (See Note below). In the parliamentary elections that will inevitably follow the winner of the presidency will carry the day.

A racist alliance called the Sarvajana Balaya has, in the meantime, raised its head, led by Weerawansa and Gamanpilla. It has attracted bankrupt ex-leftists of the Communist Party and aging Vasudeva. This too will play right into RW’S hand.

Act independently

An ever-increasing number of organisations have taken matters into their own hands and launched initiatives because the government is flat-footed. Let me give you a few examples. Fed up with the inability of successive governments to do anything to combat communal violence, or to be more accurate because of the aggravation of communalism by governments beginning with the denial of citizenship to Tamil plantation workers by D. S. Senanayake, the father of the nation (sic!), through SWRD’s communal politics and JR’s loathing of Tamils, to Chandrika playing politics, a bunch of Buddhist monks took the initiative into their own hands.

The monks went on an expedition to Europe and the US, sought out Tamil links such as the Global Tamil Forum and others and initiated a dialogue. The initiative is now in motion and grassroots activities are in full swing. Important figures like Hon Karu Jayasuriya (former Speaker), Austin Fernando, Sarvodaya, Jehan Perera’s National Peace Council and Paikiasothy Saravanamuttu’s CPA are involved. Branches have been established in many localities and an active movement is in swing. If communal violence is to be halted and if the state and government are, quite literally, worse than useless, a grass roots people’s movement is needed. It has ben launched; its name is National Movement for a Just Society.

A second example is the need to foster English language competence in all children as a link language between communities and more important because English is the lingua Franca of the world today. (Sounds a bit contradictory, doesn’t it? Wonder what the French feel about the juxtaposition?). Seriously though, English is not just the language of modern technology and business. No, it is in all its pronunciations and accents it has become the Twenty-first Century’s world language essential for everyone. State and government have simply and literally buggered up English in Sri Lanka’s schools so, well-intentioned voluntary organisations, often women’s groups have stepped into the breach.

Two more quick examples and I will stop. Microfinance is now the domain of groups, often women’s societies that have filled the gap since the banking sector has failed to support small and medium enterprises. And finally, cooperatives are providing marketing and investment openings for fishermen. I personally know of one such successful assembly of such entities in Jaffna.

None of this is new, it is all the subject of interminably long and boring newspaper columns. (When will our columnists learn that brevity is the soul of wit?)

The subject of this part of the essay however is in what ways can the people themselves organised in various voluntary bodies do to overcome or replace a sluggish state. To what extent can, for example a popular, a Peoples’ Planning Council, replace the hiatus created by the absence of a State Planning Agency in Sri Lanka. I think a popular public initiative of this nature, can achieve quite a bit.

*NOTE: The absolute core Sinhala vote in the country is the infamous “69 lakhs”; maybe 70 now by natural increase. I reckon that the minorities – Ceylon Tamils, Upcountry Tamils, Muslims and Catholics – are about one third of the core Sinhala vote. That is (1/3) x70 about 23 lakhs. This is why I reckon thar RW is making a play for a clear majority of this 23-lakhs in the presidential poll.

If a genuine NPP member like Prof. David can say “Buffalo Lal Kantha’s pronouncements have made this more likely. He has in addition claimed that only the JVP and the Udaya Gammanpila party took a stand against the Tamils, opposed any form devolution and supported the military in the war against the Tigers. ” , I wonder what devout amateurs like Sinhala Man have to say?
This is the ugly face of the JVP, and no amount of well-meaning platitudes from Harini, Chaturanga, or other NPP members is going to wish it away. If the JVP actually comes to power, these people will be the first for the high jump.

I know every political party in Sri Lanka have made the same mistakes in the past and all of them are not prepared to accept their past mistakes even after the bankruptcy. When you hear that Sinhalese Fundamentalists like Wimal Weerawanse recently formed a new political group and in which Communist party is also included. It is time for AKD to explain the public whether they have changed their past.

        Ajith,
I was surprised that the Communist Party has joined the racists. The current leadership doesn’t seem to have the thinking capacity or purported principles of former CP leaders. They could at least have stayed independent if they don’t like the Pohottuwa or SJB.

      OC,
      .
I am grateful to Dr. K.D for the current public statement as this comes at a time when the JVP is trying to destroy the trust that the NPP has in itself.
My wish is for more NPP seniors to come forward and sort it out before another “false public perception” takes place. Why don’t our hell people cross-examine? It continued since the day I knew them.

Although their cyber propagandists are trained to spread no more than “malimawa jayawewa”, none of the Z-genzers know the scale of brutality the JVP is capable of draining the last drop of blood from youths across the country.

I was born in the south and left the country for Europe (for education, not asylum) long ago. There I thought it must be a hell of radical thinkers and idiots.

Looking back, most Sinhala Buddhist monks (99%) have no knowledge, however, as far as I know, they automatically become the main guide of rural villagers.
Even though our “apehamuduruwo” took the lead in the rural corners, many of them were empty vessels. Myths and mystics lead people into a conditioned mind as nothing can reverse it.

Violence has turned people into “Sinhalese Buddhist thugs”, the priority to non-violence was replaced gradually by the opposite. If True buddhism would have guided, how could the country be fallen with underworld men of increasing numbers ?

Southern politicians should be given maximum punishment. There is no doubt that mlechcha Mahendra Rajapaksa’s coffin will be filled with saliva on his last day.

Society tends to forget the “essentials” within society. Political crooks and media crooks work in symbiosis to establish their lifestyle for the sake of their political power. Dilith Jayaweera (Owner of Derana Television and powerful entrepreneur) was born and brought up in Galle but over time the devil was evolved in him by “Rajapaksa rascals”.

This is the reason why JVP-led NPP still cannot convince many like me.
LALKANTHA and the like have no shame (as for me, LALKANTHA is another murderer in JVP), but challenges their “arbitrary killings” as their defense tactics as of today. If society is built according their ideologies, self-justice will rule, and society will gradually tend to the barbarism and feudal past of human evolution.

“He said, “The more you put pressure in the north, the happier the Sinhala people will be here. Really, if I starve the Tamils out, the Sinhala people will be happy.” This statement was given by a President of a Party.
Does any one see any difference between these two statements?

KD Lalkantha is now in his late 50s.

He is alleged to have been involved in the riot of 89-92. There are no direct charges for any of them. However, if not them, who was behind the abductions of the youths in the south? There were villages in the south, and the heads of the youth were hanged on the fences. Was it all done by the government then? Victimized mothers who have lost their beloved sons will be able to share truth about the abductions.

I think SM is an irreversible psychopath. Poor guy doesn’t like to read updates about JVP led NPP. Today, some parts of the country are strongly against the JVP.

              OC,
Thank you. I cancelled my trips and stay back in europe. But whenever I read from SM it gives me allergic reactions.
              .
As I have told elsewhere, I refrain from commenting on the other person for humanitarian reasons. I studied human psychology for 1.5 years and I knew that he faced many problems because of his unique thinking. SM hangs on to my comments while casually ignoring his “boy”. I don’t really understand it. Besides, SM is in the mid-70s. when would he grow up ?
              :
We have to have priorities. SM has been brainwashed by AKDISM (no different to Mahinda Chinthanaya) and his little world is filled with all subjective thoughts based on AKD’s HASKAM (wonder making) (not even considered by many analysts). I feel sorry for SM. If he had been with us, the situation would not have worsened as of today.

That is why he thinks that two people who spoke against the JVP will break it completely. Guy is said to have studied logic…..however, self-proclaimed statements. … ?

              Hello OC and Leelagemalli,
As a retired Academic of the old school, Sinhala Man thinks that CT is full of Intellectuals and Post Graduates and addresses them appropriately. Before my father died at 83 he showed signs of mild forgetfulness etc. Sometimes he would tell the same story a couple of times in the same day. I am sure we have all been guilty of this at times. My sister has OCD (from her teens) and has to check if she has switched the sockets off at least twice before she leaves her House.
We can forgive people for idiosyncrasies that they have little control over (that doesn’t include the Psychos). I have watched children with ADHD growing into fully compos mentis adults, but I have also see some with deep-seated anger unable to control this as they get older (really Toxic personalities)..
              Best regards

                Dear LS,
Thank you. Btw,good to hear you are a retired academic. I think many of us are PG or post docs.

As far as I’m concerned, SM’s comments are often about others or completely off topic. He torments me and Old Codger round the clock, evoking the murderous JVP behavior of the brutal 89-92 period. I could get him a parade of victimized mothers whose sons were abducted and tortured by the JVP in 89-92. I think for the sake of my mates, I should risk it int he near future. I owe that much to my then friends and aquaintance.
                .
If I travel back to SL next, I will do that and send him the video for everyone’s clarity. At least those who underestimate the BRUTAL PAST OF JVPrs will finally see what they are mostly capable of.
                .
SM feels that if I criticize the Janata Vimukthi Peramuna for no good reasons. And he is forced ot think I could be the biggest resistance against them.
Last year I thought the guy would hire contract killers on my short vacation.
Whatever comments, poor SM made today, they were all about Leelagemalli . what a pathetic man. ???? All I can do is to wish him sooner recovery !

Yes, as they get older, many become obsessive. They tend to think the answer to life’s problems lies in one person, or God. A form of OCD?
As for psychos, one has had a spectacular implosion recently. I wait for the next one….

This country was battered not only by thirty years of brutal civil war and JVP rebels but also by the complete apathy of the people.
The recent “stuggle/aragalaya movement” has caused many of us to open eyes.
It is a positive sign for some prospects.
Japanese socio-psychological experts say that if our people had gotten rid of their “false superiority complex about their own race,” they could have developed the country in many ways today.
In retrospect, many of our Boomers (those born since 1945) are more confused in today’s declining society. To my surprise, they shamelessly point fingers only at politicians. They cannot answer why the next generation was not properly guided.

Especially former teachers behave in a very primitive manner, unable to differentiate between good and bad.
If the teachers had performed their duties properly, the situation would not have turned into such a dire situation.
However, while Lalkantha (a 60-year-old JVP blood sucker rebel turned politician) is keen on tuk tuk drivers wearing their campaign stickers, people today bow down to the former rebels. I wonder people are taken to another ride as had been deceived in Nov 2019.

My final advice to you is please find a good psychologist/psychiatrist and that will be of great help to us for meaningful discussions about CT. There are other NPP partners who are resentful of the JVP’s line on this and other issues. But they see the JVP as their only option.
JVP is a bigger risk for the LSSP tradition of leftists than the SLFP was to the parent party. At least one knew where one stood with the husband and wife.

        Hello SJ,
In my twenties I met a Sri Lankan politician on a few occasions. His proper name was Michael Van Der Poorten, but he went by the name of Mike Banda. I think he was part of the SLPP or LSSP at one time. One of the times that I met him he was with the famous actress Vanessa Redgrave and her brother Colin.
Was he well known in Sri Lanka?

Seems like an interesting character, eventually getting involved in pointless doctrinal splits, as Leftists of those days were prone to do.
In contrast to the situation today, Left-wing politicians of those times were of various ethnic backgrounds and much better educated.

A friend recently sent me a clip of AKD in a very inspiring speech where he pledges to ‘clean the swamp’ with the abolition of all perks & privileges of politicians. Whether he will be successful or not with his pledge, I am happy to vote for him just on that note. He continues by appealing to the farmers & fisher folk, as well as, teachers, for their contribution & promising the infrastructure necessary to achieve all that.

Apologies, my comment got posted accidently before completion.

However, as Prof. D states, I am concerned about the hard core JVP in the party AKD leads. Instead of a pickle of all sorts that form the NPP, I would like to see the NPP in the guise of the ‘National Movement for a Just Society’, shedding extremists or opportunists in the party. That is, if the NPP denies the existence of such members. So far, the women’s & Bhikku fronts, trade unionists & hard core JVPs do not inspire confidence.

At least today their rehabilitation is the need of the hour.

        – Nalin Hewage (Venomous Reptile in Human Disguise)
        – Sunil Handunnetti (Venomous Reptile in Human Disguise)

Over time, their poison must be neutralized with an appropriate antidote. Their toxic reactions can spread hate in the long run. I thought senior monks would lead that effort, but over time nothing came of it.
They still don’t respect anyone else’s thoughts, how can they be politicians for a country where multple numbers of political parites are existent ?
        .
By nurturing them with good values instead of the cruel mentality instilled in them by the village thugs, we should take them to civilized cultures.

AKD’s recent travels abroad seem to have taught him much about the civilized way of life.
Now recently he has voiced that he has to move forward with stopping RW once they get the power. NOthing new about his own plans were exposed yet today.

              True.
Do the people have real choices now or ever?
The final decisions are made by merchants of death, Military Industrial Complex, Wall street, ….. and few other unelected CEO’s and through various means consent of the people is manufactured.

Look at the way in which Sri Lanka is being structured and the nation is being built, how power is skewed in a few hands.

Racists and Fascists are being openly celebrated and people are willing to vote for them. Politicians are scared of Saffronistas and saffron clad thugs, even they have been elected to parliament.

Look at our learned friend nimal fernando who admires tin pot Thiruvengadam Velupillai Prabaharan or the learned professor SJ who believes China, Mao, Pol Pot, Abimael Guzmán … who could do no wrong.

That is why I am forced to say that our people are racists or passive racists beyond the level of Zionists in Israel. Like burnt firecrackers covered with ashes, their communal thoughts are embedded in them.

Today, those who then painted walls for a jollyful moment, are now hired by NPP on the cost of some hidden fund raisers whose whereabouts are not yet clear to anyone. Those youth and their whereabouts are similar to that of underworld groups of drug mafia networks. They are mostly coming from Z-genzer groups and unemployed lads that would do any low-deed to surivive.
                .
Now the NPP rally crowd is #paying attention, however, most of them seem blindsided. Even our Bandarawela NPP diehard supporter doesn’t seem to know about “New Economic Plans” of a NPP govt. These sound to be similar to GOTABAYA-Number 2.

“Can you even compare a jelly-livered gutless killer like Ranil to him? “

Did you know Ranil has recently converted himself to Sinhala/Buddhism. He is going to protect Buddhism because the constitution demands him to do so. Now he is responsible for not only protecting constitution but also (Sinhala/)Buddhism. You know what happens when a politician want to take care of Religion as well as Constitution.

Constitution mandates that any govt should accord priority to Buddhism – President
                  https://www.adaderana.lk/news.php?nid=99586

Now it appears Ranil validating what SJ’s Weeping Widow did with 1972 Constitution (and JR’s 1978 constitution), saffronaisation of constitution.
                  Why now?

I used that phrase because the average US citizens were fed up with likes of the Clintons who were dominating the Democrat party (Sanders would have been a better candidate than Hillary in keeping with the Obama legacy), However, it has been Trump’s own Republicans who, in my opinion, made Capitol Hill the swamp with likes of the Bush family & now he is adding water, instead of draining the swamp.

Trump was no better but the white middle America was taken in by the rhetoric. Doesn’t that seem similar to SL? AKD is not Trump but I am not sure if he knows where to start draining. As for his appeal to farmers & fisher folk, they could certainly need a helping hand with new technology & marketing their produce but I will be surprised if the appeal will taken seriously by the teachers, now that we have got used to a tuition culture.

RW is a nephew of JR who once said more I hurt the Tamil Speaking Citizens (TSC) more I please the Singhalese. RW & MS had a chance to bring in a Government of Good Governance in 2015 but miserably messed it up because of them fighting each other. MS allowed Rajapaksas to get power in 2018. Had MR been allowed to be the PM and we did not bring back the fox RW, we might have prevented the Easter Bombings.
Tamils should not cast their votes to RW as he just trying to deceive TSC once again. RW proudly claims that he was the man who engineered the SPLIT in LTTE which finally led to annihilation of the organisation that wanted TSC to live in their own land.
If the NEXT Government of SL is not willing to reconcile with the minorities the Isle isn’t going to thrive .

It is TIME for the political leaders that is thinking of being the next President of SL, should publish his manifesto NOW. Is the Draft of the new constitution available for the public to see? It’s time for a new constitution to put to the public for a referendum that satisfies the minorities.

You cannot clean the swamp like AKD says. There are many other who promised to clean the swamp and ended up joining the swamp. This is hopeless wishful thinking. All democracies are inherently corrupt. No escape from it. The USA is run by Oligarchs who have gamed the political system and the media. Voters are brainwashed into thinking they live in the upside down world. Corruption in Sri Lanka has to be managed. The main revenue making departments of the government have to be cleaned up on a priority basis. Laws updated. Law enforcement cleaned up. The list is long and none of it can be done overnight. This is why AKDs rhetoric is no more then mere B.S. Also is there an alternative to the vision of RW from AKD besides just small talk. Then there is the big Lal Kantha, Hundunetti, Tilvin brigade. These are violent communists with a very nasty track record voicing their opinions in no uncertain terms. My dear voters please do not cut off your nose to spite your face by voting for an idiot brigade of no nothings promising to give the moon and the stars. It ain’t going to happen and by voting for them you will end up in a worse mess than before.

In 2020 the course was titled “Trading for Development in the Age of Global Value Chains”, in this course as the final project I submitted a presentation titled: “A Wishion for Sri Lanka: Transforming Sri Lanka into a World Class Economy”.

I used the word WISHION to imply that its both Wish and my Vision for my country.
        .
In which I articulated a vision in several steps, provinding enough basic information, based on what I have studied from the course, as to how Sri Lanka could be transformed into an innovation hub in this part of the world while becoming one of the best economies in the world – like Singapore or Japan.
        .
A vision that is far more superior to what anyone else has so far produced for Sri Lanka – including the likes of Nirmalan Dhas who has articulated his own vision sometime back.
        .
This vision seems to have got the recognition of some quarters, including investors as a possible blue print to develop the country.

It’ll be all nice, sweet and hunky-dory ……. initially.

The true face/nature comes out when the going gets tough ……… economically and then takes a hit in the public-opinion.

Are they “democratic mature” enough to tolerate dissent? Hand over to an alternate Party/leader if the country wants? ……….. Like, it’ll be handed to them, through a relatively open, free and fair election.

Their history and shenanigans in the University campuses …….. does not bode well. That’s the mindset.

I’m still looking forward to the day JVP takes over …….. out of shear frustration …….. for lack of any alternatives: the best out of the worst.

I’ve already booked a flight for Sinhala_Man …….. when turbulence hits and the hordes come looking for him.

Hard choice ……. it’s either turbulence at home or turbulence in the air.

PS ……. Of all the pols I’ve listened to, at this point, AKD has a believable honesty/sincerity ……. that has struck a code with the people: not the rest of the JVP/NNP. JVP’s popularity is nothing but AKD’s popularity.

Only thing he’s cagey about is a solution for the issues of the minorities. He has to be careful ….. if not, his adversaries will pounce on it and will lose the SB vote. So far, he has traversed the treacherous terrain well.

It’s an utter waste of time to talk about any of the other pols ……… Ranil offers only a Nietzsche-en after-life: 2049.

Suffer and bear any earthly hardship till 2048 ……. for your heavenly rewards.

Am I the only one who suspects ……. he’s in cahoots with Pastor Jerome?

      They have the same message.

        nimal fernando,
“Only thing he’s cagey about is a solution for the issues of the minorities. He has to be careful ….. if not, his adversaries will pounce on it and will lose the SB vote”.
What do you want me to understand from that.
If AKD is guarded, should I take it that he has a solution not palatable to his SB voters.
Or, you yourself wish to remain guarded?

          Nathan,

I know what you are getting at …. one has to first win, for any solution. Don’t want to get drawn in at this stage; don’t want to upset anyone’s apple cart.

It’ just another 5 months; be patient. ……… My gut feeling is, the minorities will have the best chance …….. after the elections. That they haven’t had in a long time.

              .
              AKD knows
that he can achieve only so much.
              .
I’m sure that he wishes sincerely to do as much for the Tamils as is possible. If he tries to do much more, he will jeopardize all good he aims to do.
              .
However, where you could do something is to point out any mistakes he’s making in his plans to improve the economy, etc.
              .
It is going to be very difficult to get back all the Rajapaksa loot. However, we will have to pay back the loans Sri Lanka has obtained. We will have to pay back the loans he has obtained, claiming it is for the people as a whole. Rajapaksa and Ranil are totally to blame.

Do you have any evidence that the “Rajapaksa loot” is a significant proportion of the 57 billion DOLLARS we owe?
If you do, please present it. I know the JVP keeps talking about it, but that is directed towards the largely economic illiterate voters. I do hope you aren’t in the same class.

I could not believe it, but we in Europe enjoyed the subsidy almost for a while. A period of 8 months.

AKD has already told Jaffna people he has no planes to trade political solution for votes. Ranil ignores any mention of political solution. There is consensus among and across political parties, “Now that Army is in control of North East and Sinhala/Buddhisation rapidly progressing, Tamil speaking people are fighting among themselves, the west and the powerful actors ignore human rights abuses, war crimes, … why rock the boat by talking political solutions”

Namal is too busy enticing saffron thugs in the east.

            So forget the minorities.
Thiruvengadam Velupillai Prabaharan helped to politically and militarily weaken the Tamil Speaking People’s legitimate struggle.

Instead of working along with people across races, religion, regions, he alienated progressives through out the country, region, and rest of the world and helped the Sinhala/Buddhists to centralise and consolidate state powers which benefited the crooks, political class, saffronistas, armed forces, merchants of death, racists, fascists, ……..

I have told you that on Tuesday I met Handunnetti in Bandarawela only because Chathuranga Abeysinghe called me minutes before their meeting for businessmen was about to start. I’m not a businessman, obviously, but its at fora of this sort that I can make a contribution. Don’t underestimate people like Handunnetti.
        .
The problem is lower down. The guy who is the organiser for Bandarawela has neither the intelligence nor the time to fulfill his role. I had met him just about five days previously, and told him that I’d like to get into these discussions. Did he deliberately abstain from telling me about this meeting? Difficult to tell. I feel that he’s just not got the time to devote to these Party matters.
        .
During question time, I pointed out that it was mainly Sinhalese who were present, with one reason being that the Hindus had that festival where the juggernaut disrupts all traffic. I granted that, and warned that this is an area where we are weak. The NPP record on race relations is poor.

          Dear Readers,

A big feud is developing between Lalkantha and AKD the clown. It will explode revealing the truth.

7.52th min from 11.52 min video – Lalkantha confirms his thoughts again

          1) Lalkantha reaffirms that judicial powers should be vested in villagers – AKD Deyo is making every effort to defend such highly controversial stupid statements from ignorant Lalkantha.
          .
          2) AKD makes every effort not to deviate from Ranil’s political philosophy of empowering the rural masses, introducing them as equivalent to “Licchavi units”.
          :
          3) Our promoters are playing the violin without knowing what is going on with the contradictory statements of AKD and Lalkalantha #.
Lalkantha behaves like a rebellious village thug we experienced in the late 80s. Grandmother beautifully said, “Dog’s tail will not straighten even if you put it in a bamboo sheath.”

My million dollar question: Why don’t we give weapons to the thugs in the village created by the Medamulana rascals?

Lalkantha has hinted that if they fail to seize power, they will fall back into their brutal past. Next insurgency is in making.

The Govigama Buddhists who occupied positions of power not only had discriminated Karawa and Salagama people, they have actively sabotaged their lives, particularly the lives of exceptionally talented ones with the potential to succeed in life, with the help of various others, like minority ethnic groups such as Tamils, Muslims, Parsis , Christians, Burghers, Malays, and people of other castes such as Durawas etc, and at times people of the same castes too who perhaps were less deserving but had managed to succeed by sabotaging other more talented folks of their own caste due to their collusions with the aristocratic Bodu Govi who had held onto political power in the country for the most part of the post independence period history of Sri Lanka.

They are the rich and the richest that the old industrial revolution produced. The oil barons that the petrolium industry (Shell, Caltex, BP etc) produced, the other petrochemical and allied industries such as fertilizer industry (eg: Dupont, Bayer, Baurs, CIC, the list goes on) the plastic manufactures and industries that dependent on them like Cola giants such as Coca Cola and PepsiCo, the weapons manufacturers, (Raytheon, BAE Systems, Boeing, Lokheed Martin etc etc) they are varied and numerous.

The issue is though they have been in power upto now, their world view and the value system with which they had been operating on, hasn’t been not only problematic but now have run into limitations.

This itself has necessitated that we as a planet and people inhabiting this planet need to change their course if we are to continue to live successfully on this planet. Because we so far do not have a planet B to escape to. This is the only home we’ve got. We screw this place up, no place for future generations to live. Without such course correction even the survival of our species, the human species, could be potentially threatened.
          .

So why are they doing it – without changing?
            .
Change is difficult to begin with we are creatures of habit. And no one it appears know the scale of change that is required. For example its not just about switching to renewable energies like solar or wind-power, which in itself is a daunting task. It is also the way of life we have accustomed to – consumption based capitalist economies. More we consume, more the economy would flourish. But more we consume, more sick we get. Obesity to Diabetes to coronary heart diseases are diseases of the affluent, due to excessive consumption and other modern day lifestyles. Simply cutting down calaries and going to the gym isn’t going to help address the issue at a scale required. What not many people don’t know is these diseases are also calles civilisational diseases. They are part and parcel of the way we have structured our world and lives throughtout the course of the modern civilzation, which some refer to as the Western Civilisation for obvious reasons.

            Hello Ruchira,
“Because we so far do not have a planet B to escape to”. Yes we have, first the Moon as a Base to Launch from, then Terraform Mars. Wait for Lester to Patent his Warp Drive and then we’ll do the same to Europa. There are many Solar Systems out there that have Exoplanets much like Earth, possibly with life already. So in a hundred years or so we might be ready for Proxima Centauri b, only around 5 light years away. Of course if DTG is right then Armageddon will have happened and we will be no more.

Climate Change is an emergency, We don’t still have the technology to terraform Mars or to have a successful base on Moon. But we’ve got it covered and ppl are working on it. Perverts won’t be allowed on board.

“There are many Solar Systems out there that have Exoplanets much like Earth, possibly with life already.” – an assumption.
              .

              .
One must underdtand the basic concepts b4 commenting. Colonising the universe and evacuation of a species of entire planet due a climate crisis are two very different things. If you can’t understand the difference, trying to show off isn’t going work.

                Hello Ruchira,
I am well aware of the Environmental problems that we face on Earth. However most of the World, except Africa, has either moderate or little growth.
However, my comment was done partly tongue in cheek but also to show that problems can be overcome given time and effort. We are now in the position of having a workable Nuclear Fusion System that can produce more Energy than it consumes. This will result in a substantial reduction in the need to burn Fossil Fuels. It obviously needs much more work to be done and is also very expensive to build. I would imagine in the not to distant future that the most developed Countries will reap the benefits before the Developing Countries catch up. If I wanted to show off I would tell you that way back in 1969 I told my sister that in the near future we would have flat screen TVs on the wall and that by plugging an Electronic Chip into the TV you could show a whole Film. She reminded me about this when she visited Sri Lanka last year and as she said “Great ideas are only useful if you do something with them”.
                Best regards

Nuclear energy has hidden dangers that industry would rather not speak of, proponents of which too would deny as usual – the same way some denies “climate change”. I was merely pointing out your apparent lack of understanding of the difference between colonising space and emergency evacuation of a planet by an inhabiting species. Complex ideas when thrown out of context appears as showing off whether intentional or not. Nuclear Fusion Technology as far as I am aware of is still in its infancy, yeah I’ve heard that it is promising. Thanks for reminding. But Energy is not the only issue we are facing that endangers the planet. That was the whole point.

                    Hello OC,
Clarke’s 2001 (Kubrick 1968) was a brilliant film as was Blade Runner (Ridley Scott 1982) , but both were a little over optimistic on the time scales. I stayed up until the early hours in June 1969 watching the BBC 1 coverage of the Moon Landing
A little more up to date – I used to train the Judiciary how to use Dragon Naturally Speaking and I thought that this would lead to the demise of keyboards. So I tried it myself and failed miserably to train it with my accent Later editions were better but still not good enough. I have not tried any since about 2015, but maybe they have improved. If Star Trek’s Engineer Mr Scott could speak to his computer, I should also be able to.

                  Dear LankaScot,
                  .
Any adult human with a certain amount of education knows that breaking up an atom releases a huge quantity of energy.
                  .
However, what has been stressed again and again, is that very small quantities of toxic nuclear waste are then left behind as a result of the process. I believe this only because I have consistently been told this. The nature of my understanding of this is somewhat different, but how is that going to be disposed of? Even shooting it off into outer space will not rid us of the problem.
                  .
Over time, this waste will “break down”. but the time it takes is said to be thousands (makes little difference if it is a million!) of years.
                  .
We have a real problem here.

As for intelligent life elsewhere in the Universe:
                    .
We know nothing of the Universe in terms of time and distances. I clearly cannot prove that there is life elsewhere.
                    .
Given that all living things keep exchanging atoms (or whatever the tiniest particle of matter is – proton, electron, or whatever) whilst they are living, but that the process must necessarily stop (the living thing dies) it becomes impossible to find out. There could be ways of overcoming this (send off a male and a female with adequate supplies of food and energy) – seems theoretically possible – but doesn’t feel feasible unless there is some other form of “travelling” that hasn’t yet been found out.
                    .
Much better to humbly stick wit what we know!

You can keep on calling him in vain, but he is listening to me singing like this in a hall in London and is in heaven and will not hear your cries.

          PK,
He seems to be a bit embarrassed with Ruchi, who is singing a different tune.

He is so diverted with my singing and love song, which he thinks is meant for him but in reality, for another, that he has not noticed that his precious Ruchira Baba has is now singing to a different tune and also a different song, that he does not approve of. Poor Jester he did not realize the song was not meant for him.

He cannot keep saying Amen all the time, can he?

        OC,
I have not lived in the country for the past 3 decades, nor have I worked with Sri Lankans. I had some communications only with some lecturers of CMBO and PERA (faculties of science and medicine) but I did not interact with them. We could not go properly with them and we clashed.
I never cared about caste, religion but my parents and relatives liked it. I have seen my grandparents and relatives not treat workers like “cinnamon peelers”, “fruit pickers” and so on. (Late 70’s and 80’s).

Forced to think otherwise, I left home at the age of 18, unable to get on with my father. Not just caste and creed stuff but also father’s abusive nature.

Considering that, what are the surnames of Karawa and Salagama? Please let us know a few surnames. I think you can explain them better.
Some of the upland castes also look down upon the caste ” Govi budu”. Can you explain a little more about caste in Sri Lankan society today? Thank you.

          LM,
You can download this very good book on the subject:

          https://noolaham.org/wiki/index.php/The_Karava_of_Ceylon?uselang=en
There is also this interesting FB page:
          https://web.facebook.com/KaravasriLanka/photos/?paipv=0&eav=AfZYy7lHnaXNQMNylmVO6TON5SKUJ5_1ZbZOMJcVYhYPipWhDQaeIHJKCgjao6OkPCA&_rdc=1&_rdr
          .
Caste exists in Sinhalese society, perhaps less rigid than among Tamils, but nevertheless its influence is pervasive though not talked about.

            Hello OC,
Thanks for the link, I have just downloaded and started to read about the Karawa. The more I read about the Sri Lankan Castes, the more that I am persuaded that my Traveller (Gypsy) friends in Scotland are related to some of these groups – maybe from Sri Lanka, maybe North India. Have there been any significant migrations from here in the 10th Century or thereabouts as the first mention of them is around that time in Scotland. Most of the Scottish Travellers have been Tinsmiths/Metalworkers and anything having to do with Horses. They also have a tradition of collecting Fresh Water Pearls and Gemstones.
            Best regards

              LS,
The European Roma are said to from Gujarat.
              https://youtu.be/WUqYO6490UQ?si=Qao838f1-WxQiJjE
The Sri Lankan gypsies are also of Indian origin but speak Telegu.
Yes, the Sri Lankan caste system is very much alive, though kept under wraps and taken out only when necessary 😄

              Hello LS,
We have already discussed here in the forum. LS shared me earlier on “Travellers”. I always wondered where the gypsies were from in Europe. I compared them to the “Ahinkuntika community” in Sri Lanka. Some believe that European Gypsies are ex-Romanians. Others say from India. But the truth is not clear to me.
              https://www.ethnicity-facts-figures.service.gov.uk/summaries/gypsy-roma-irish-traveller/#:~:text=81.6%25%20of%20people%20from%20the,were%20born% 20%20%20 outside Europe.

The Sinti are a subgroup of the Romani people most commonly found in Germany. They arrived in Austria and Germany in the late Middle Ages as part of the Romani migration from the Indian subcontinent, and eventually split into two groups: the Eftavagarja (“Seven Caravans”) and the Estraxarja (“from Austria”).

          “leelagemalli”,
          .
Isn’t this the crux of the matter?
          .
Please try to be more objective in analysing the situation.
          .
There can be no doubt that the JVP (knowing that they had been unfairly blamed for the holocaust) committed some acts which were extremely cruel. There can be no excuse for some of the things that they did.
          .
But please try to understand that the JVP today is quite different. Don’t try to drive a wedge between them and the NPP. There are respects in which some vestiges of previous experiences are still present.
          .
I’m giving you the best advice that I can. You needn’t transform into a supporter of the JVP. But try not to be unfair. Distance yourself somewhat from all these developments.

Your COMMENT above is completely inconsistent as usual (if someone asks where he is going, he replies that he has some coconuts in his bag).

Crux of the matter – my comment above is to OC. If you read it closely, you will understand. You chased me as usual. ?????.
            *
First let me ask you who do you think you are to adivse me?
If OC, NV or others brought it up, I could discuss it further. I consider them “fact checkers” and unfortunately, you don’t fall into that category.
            *
Unfortunately, we are forced to believe that you have no knowledge of the things you are talking about. You may be good at some “English Literature” lessons but not at “Basics of Sri Lankan Politics”. Your judgmental behavior has hurt many of us time and time again. However, we thought, you are the one who never look back your mistakes.
            *
To explain to you, I would never become a JVPr, maybe NPP if they had a relatively better “economic plan” for the future of the nation, which is caught up in blatant lies on lanken politics.
            *
CBK and RW couldn’t do what they thought was right because the people were taken for a ride by the “criminal majority” in this country. JVP is/was complicit in any of the protests.

              cont.
JVP is/was complicit in any of the protests. Today they cannot escape their responsibilities. In retrospect, both leaders were repeatedly misunderstood and misinterpreted by the country’s media. The Sri Lankan media is a mafia that cares little about the impact of their responses.

Dear Panini – continuing the story…
    .
So there’s a new paradigm of people among the intelligence who ‘run the world’ that has recognised the need for this task to be undertaken and they are willing to give those who are willing and has the required complex cognitive capacities to carry out this task a space in shaping the future of the world and the planet. This where our team draws our strength. We represent this new paradigm. The threats for us comes from the old paradigm that tries to resist this and wants to sabotage our efforts going to great lengths, even killing our family members and destroying our families and lives.
    .
So how does all this related to us in Sri Lanka?
    .

In Sri Lanka the old political paradigm represented by the SLPP-UNP-SJB-SLFP & Others that align with themselves like minority parties and individuals like Patali have been captured by the old paradigm that ‘run the world’. This includes people like Nirmalan Dhas too who knows about this phenomenon but for some reason does not seem to able too see what exactly is going on in Sri Lanka. I suspect its because of his racial prejudices by way of being an Indian Tamil, at least in part.
      .
So why am I being hunted down by all these people as I am some sort of a serial criminal that should be exterminated from the face of the earth?.
      .
      Ideas!
      .
The hundreds, thousands, and millions of ideas that run through my head every second, minute, hour of the day. These ideas are valuable and are about changing the course of the world.

Before getting into her a quick note on Patali Champika Ranawaka (PCR).
      .
The coalition of the old political paradigm consisting of SLPP/UNP/SJB/SLFP et al seems to be entertaining the idea of fielding PCR as a common candidate for the Presidential elections.
      .
He isn’t a man of integrity either. looks like he could be bought with sexual bribes too, and he now seems to have joined those to whom these ppl have promised sex with Leila if they were to support them. To which he seems to have readily agreed.
      .
In addition his past has been marred with allegations of sexual scadals too.
      .
The below story needs no further explanation of his character.
      .
Do we want a President from whom we can’t protect our girl friends?

If Sri Lanka had a viable middle class, the elections wouldn’t matter so much. A robust economy combined with checks and balances can generate wealth regardless of the President’s IQ.During Trump’s term from January 2017 to January 2021, the Dow Jones Industrial Average saw a total return of approximately 56%, which translates to an annualized gain of about 11.8%.

Due to Tamil Tiger terrorism, Sri Lanka does not have much of a middle class outside of Colombo.

      Lester,
You are right, – A viable middle class is the Engine of Prosperity.
Search within you. Be true to yourself. It was you, and no other, who did it to death.

      Dear rational thinkers,

“If Sri Lanka had a viable middle class, the elections wouldn’t matter so much”
      .
Is that the only horror that Sri Lanka has faced in the last 50 years?

Janata Vimukthi Peramuna burned public property one after another. And let’s not forget how their mobs burned them in May 2022. Our people must wake up from their hibernation and reveal the truth to the nation.
      .
Today, the people have been fed with false information by repeatedly saying that the brutal killings by the JVP in many areas including Galle, Matara, Ratnapura, Beliaatta, Tangalle, Hambantota, Kurunegala were done only by the government and the battalion camp. If any reliable journalist comes forward to prove this information to the nation, those mothers who lost their beloved sons are the best example. If the Janata Vimukthi Peramuna-led groups continue to bully the nation, it will succeed in the coming days.
