Ram Mandir At Babri Masjid Site: Death Of Secular Democracy & Rise Of Hindutva Fascism

By Latheef Farook

Latheef Farook

The story of Ram Mandir

The ancient town of Ayodhya, in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, has been known for its rich diversity of religious denominations, predominantly Hinduism and Islam. For centuries Hindus and Muslims lived in peace and harmony in this town where, in the year 1528, Mughal King Barber built a mosque, which later came to be known as Babri Masjid. Though there was no dispute of any kind for more than two centuries, controversy was sparked off when some Hindus started to claim that this mosque was built on the spot where the Hindu mythical deity Ram was born.

The controversy resulted in the first religious violence almost three and half centuries later, in 1853. In view of the sensitive nature of the issue, six years later, in 1859, the British colonial rulers erected a fence to separate places of worship for Muslims and Hindus. Under this arrangement Muslims were allowed to use the inner court for their prayers while the outer court was allocated to Hindus.

Elaborate arrangements have been made to open today – Monday 22 January 2024- the Ram Mandir Temple in the ancient Indian city of Ayodhya, built at a cost of Rs 1,800 crore, at the site where more than five centuries old Babri Masjid once stood. Rama is from the Epic Ramayana which tells the story of Prince Rama’s quest to rescue his beloved wife Sita from the clutches of Ravana of Sri Lanka with the help of an army of monkeys.

This situation continued for almost a century until 1949, when some Hindus secretly placed idols of Lord Rama inside the mosque triggering off strong protest from the Muslims. Both Muslims and Hindus filed civil suits, but in a move to appease the Hindus, and deprive Muslims of their rights, the then Congress government declared the mosque premises a disputed area and sealed the gates.

Thus, the Congress government was responsible for sowing the seeds for  conflict between the two major communities. In doing so it  insulted the Muslims who had already been prevented from praying in the mosque. The District Judge ordered, in 1986, that the gates of the mosque be opened to allow Hindus to worship. In protest, the Muslims set up the Babri  Masjid Action Committee to fight for their rights.

Without waiting for the court verdict, some Hindus  began to  raise communal tension between the two communities. The Hindu extremist party, Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) founded in 1964 by a group of senior leaders of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), formed a committee in 1984, and started spearheading a nationwide campaign to build  Ram Temple in the premises of Babri Masjid.

This insidious campaign was later led by long time RSS leader Lal Krishna Advani, who became leader of the Bahratiya Janata Party (BJP) – earlier known as the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, established in 1951 as a political wing of the RSS to counter rising public revulsion after the venerated father of the nation,  .

It was L. K. Advani who first brought the Babri Masjid issue to the forefront of the BJP’s strategy and politicized it to achieve power. His extremely dangerous ‘rath yatra’ (chariot journey) crusade against Indian Muslims whipped up religious sentiment, polarized society and stirred Hindus and Muslims with pernicious results.

Meanwhile, the VHP  stepped up their own campaign in 1989 to lay the foundations for the Ram Temple on land adjacent to the mosque. This time, its cadres partially damaged the mosque. In 1991, the BJP came to power in Uttar Pradesh and facilitated their sinister move to destroy the mosque.

On 6 December 1992, RSS cadres gathered in the Babri mosque premises under the guise of conducting a religious ceremony marking the laying of the first bricks for constructing a Ram temple .

Despite assurances, the RSS, BJP, VHP and Sangh Parivar, youths wearing yellow headbands, started attacking television crews, knocking down and trampling their equipment while wave after wave of slogan shouting Hindus surged towards the mosque. Then began their mass assault on the Babri Majid which they razed to the ground in a very professional manner.Groups of jubilant RSS supporters paraded through the narrow lanes chanting obscene slogans against Muslims.

The congress government of Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao in the centre didn’t take any measure to prevent the   communal violence.

The demolition of the Masjid triggered off nationwide religious riots killing more than 3,000, who were mainly Muslims although the exact number killed countrywide  will never be known. Muslim-owned houses and business establishments too were destroyed as part of the overall RSS strategy to destroy the economic base of Muslims in India. The bloodshed was the most serious threat to India’s secular identity since independence in 1947.

Explaining the conspiracy, Gandhian Nirmala Deshpande said in April 2001, that the demolition was a pre-meditated and well-planned exercise carried out by experts who knew “structural engineering” – apparent from the fact that the domes of the mosque fell from the base. While Nirmala Deshpande had gone into the logistics of the demolition, others referred to the meeting at which the blueprint of the act was prepared by the BJP leadership.

At a secret meeting at the residence of BJP’s Uttar Pradesh unit chief  Vinay Katiyar, on 5 December 1992, attended by Advani, the plan was finalized to bring down the mosque. Mahant Ram Narain Das, who was the priest of the makeshift Ram temple in 1992, disclosed that: “during the crucial meeting on the eve of the demolition at the Ram Katha Sanghralaya, adjacent to the disputed site in Ayodhya, Advani, Uma Bharati and others gave fiery speeches to instigate kar sevaks to pull down the mosque.

The conspiracy angle was further highlighted when Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Kalyan Singh said that BJP and VHP leaders were lying when they said that they had no idea about what was going to happen on 6 December 1992. Kalyan Singh, as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, who was in charge of the security arrangements on that day said ‘that a deep-rooted conspiracy had been hatched by the BJP leadership to demolish the Babri Mosque’.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) charge-sheet set before the Rae Bareli court stated that L. K. Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi, Uma Bharati, Vinay Katiyar, and VHP leaders Ashok Singhal, Giriraj Kishore, Vishnu Hari Dalmia and Sadhvi Ritambara delivered inflammatory speeches at Ayodhya prior to the demolition of the Babri Masjid which incited kar sevaks to demolish the mosque.

But in its judgment, the Rae Bareli court ruled that Advani, who initiated the temple movement as a consequence of which the Babri Masjid was demolished, would not be tried but the seven remaining defendants facing charges of inciting a Hindu mob to demolish the mosque, spreading hatred against Muslims and communal frenzy leading to rioting, killing and destruction.

The judgment went against the weight of the entire evidence and violated the law as declared by the Supreme Court. It also raised questions as to how the Magistrate separated the case against Advani from the rest, even though the charges and the evidence against them were almost similar.

Some legal experts described the court proceedings as a complete eye wash while one lawyer said ‘Advani will have to examine his conscience and ask whether it is fair that those who followed him should be charged while he should get off scot free’. The lawyers were stunned at the double standards of the court order as the general perception was that Advani, as deputy Prime Minister and Union Home Minister, misused the government machinery to gain relief.

Speaking out against the leadership, kar sevaks who participated in the mosque demolition said that they were incited by the BJP and VHP netas. The BJP, which came to power only on the Ram temple issue, tried to remain in power  only on this issue,

In the long awaited verdict on the  Babri Masjid dispute in Ayodhya the Allahabad Court offered  two third of the  2.77 acre  Babri Masjid  to Hindus who destroyed the Babri Mosque  and one third to the Muslim on Thursday 30 September 2010. This judgment which shocked  all the peace loving people  appears to have been written by   Rastriya Swayam Sevak, RSS.

This provided legitimacy to the criminal act perpetrated by RSS combine in demolishing the masjid in 1992. This is Indian justice – the largest democracy in the world where around 250 million Muslims were treated worse than the worst of dalits.

    Latheef Farrook,
It is good that you fight for justice in India and Israel. But, you are reluctant to write about the Muslims treated badly by Muslim country dictators and those Muslims seeking asylum in developed nations.

Latheef Farook, stop distorting the truth. It has been archaeologically proved that the mosque had been built after demolishing Hindu temple. What has been done is to correct this historic crime by Moguls. Archaeological report has been submitted on Gyanvapi Mosque in Varanasi that it was built after demolishing Hindu temple. So that mosque also will receive similar fate to deliver justice. Even it has come to light that Taj Mahal had been built over demolished Hindu temple, but may escape from demolishing. Muslims are well known to demolish places of worship of others. Few months ago four orthodox Christian churches were converted to Mosque in Turkey. Few years ago mob went into museum in Maldives and destroyed all Buddhist artifacts kept there with security forces doing nothing to prevent. In Eastern province two Hindu temples have been destroyed, where one in Sammanthurai mosque has been built and one in Eravur, shopping complex has been built and given to Muslims. You seem to turn a blind eye to atrocities committed by Muslims.

Sivasegaram, update your knowledge before making stupid comments. Search the internet and you will find about the case. Chief of the archaeological team that researched and submitted the report is a Muslim. For doing this, he has received abuse and death threats from Islamic fanatics. Indian supreme court delivered judgement after considering all the facts. Several Muslims had donated money for the construction of Hindu temple and several have visited it after opening. Muslims have been given alternate land to construct a mosque.

There was no Ram temple at that site.
            Does the report say otherwise?
Do not bring irrelevancies to divert attention from the core issue:
Was there a Ram temple at the site?

    LF,
What happened in Sri Lanka is same too.Sinhala Buddhist Fundamentalists too made the country non-secular as well as Sinhala ONLY country. Introduced Swabhasha for Tamils and Singhalese for educating the pupils thereby preventing the ENGLISH being used as link language. This resulted in separation of the two ethnic groups and resulting in enmity.

Was LF this vocal, when Kaputas went after his own community ???? LF is just like those Muslim power grabbers, who never confront or resigned in protest. Sabry once told “it was the most humiliating and saddest day in his life” when the government during Covid decided to cremate the dead. Though naked, the SOB is still around. Not one raised voice , against Dr. Shaffi’s rights violation. F…… hypocrite.

Introduced Swabhasha for Tamils and Singhalese for educating the pupils was done much before 1948.
It was very beneficial to most Tamils and Sinhalese. The flaw was in neglecting second and third language education. That has little to do with Sinhala Buddhist fundamentalists. Even parents could not care.

Lester, India is going to build a land bridge between Dhanushkodi and Thalaimannar. After that some of the Indians will be settled in Srilanka. Also middle east will be depopulated after this war, and Indians will take over the land. Already Israel has offered jobs for Indians in the farms in place of Palestinians who had left after war commenced.

The building of the Ram temple in Ayodhya fulfils a decades-long Hindu nationalist pledge. Many Hindus believe the Babri mosque was built by Muslim invaders on the ruins of a temple where the Hindu god was born. Muslim invaders invaded India and plundered all the wealth in the temples and ruined them. Now the Hindus had taken over it. That is all. Are Muslims denying that Ayodhya was not the place where Lord Rama was born. Are they also denying Ramayana? In my view Modi has done it correctly and it was the calculation of Lord Ram.

What Muslim invaders did to Hindu India is well known and should not be forgotten, however, should Hindus in India in the 21st century behave like Muslim invaders of the 16th century? We know what communalism and majoritarianism did to Sri Lanka, Modi and the BJP are taking India down the same path for theire narrow political interests.

What Mao’s China did in Tibet, …………………. the following excerpt should inform the ignorant Mao’s b***s carriers of what the later day Emperor Wu of Han, Mao Tse-tung did to the Tibetan people and their culture:

          Religious Life in Tibet Today

The situation in Tibet today is far more ominous. Between 1959 and 197 all but a dozen of the approximately 6,000 monasteries, temples and shrines in Tibet were physically destroyed, often by dynamiting the ceilings, a grim attestation to the connection between religion and culture in Tibet. The Chinese apparently believed that traditional Tibetan culture could be obliterated by razing the material manifestations of Buddhism. Among the monasteries destroyed was Ganden; Drepung and Sera were left standing.

      Hello AYATHURAY RAJASINGAM,

I read Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey at school in Scotland. I also read an abridged version of the Ramayana and was struck by the similarities. Having read a more complete version (Valmiki) I still see the same similarities. Valmiki also mentions the Greeks and Romans. So how old is the Ramayana?

      Best regards

        3

Ramayana was composed during the period of Indus Valley Civilization. To my knowledge it was composed more than 9,000 years ago. However, Ramayana was composed prior to the composition of Maha Bharath. There may be similaries with Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey, but the year of composition is different. Likewise there are similarities between Hinduism and Judaism, but does it mean that Ramayana was composed in the year Iliad and Odyssey were composed.

There is the Brahman the all embracing phenomenon, but quite Vedic.

Siva or Vishnu, this is why they are portrayed as dark.
Siva is not supposed to be dark.
His consort and her brother and two of his most important avatars are dark.
Vishnu’s son is supposedly dark unlike his Western counterpart.

        LS
Valmiki’s Ramayana has been tampered with to make scores of versions of the narrative.
The original story might have been a folk narrative that captured the imagination of a great writer.
Ramayana reached the Tamil South in what is called the late Sangam period, in early christian era.
Vishnu, like Siva, was not a Vedic god and joined the ‘Hindu’ pantheon much later. Many mythologies merged to create these to gods as we know them now.
Enjoy the puranas as creative narratives, far more enjoyable than the Bible and even fiction today.

      Hello Kanapathy Varunan,

The mythology is that Sita was kidnapped by distracting both Ram ans lakshman.
Ravana had access to an advanced aircraft according to some.
Valmiki says that he carried her by hand and few off. No aircraft mentioned.
Decent fellow this Ravana was. He never attempted to force himself on his captive.
Tamil Ramayana describes Lanka under Ravana like heaven on earth.

    • 2
      3

      Kanapathy Varunan,
You are mistaken. Ram and Sita were incarnations of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Mahalakshmi. Lord Ram knew that King Ravana cannot even touch Sita. Ravana knew that if he touch Sita, his heads will burst into pieces. Ravana has got that curse. Moreover, no sooner the bridge between Dhanuskodi and Talaimannar is constructed, there will be peace in Sri Lanka. Buddhists and the Muslims will have to be quiet and will be unable to create problems to the Tamils.

A man who goes to rape a woman will not think of his head bursting. He kidnapped Sita because Lakshmana attempted to rape his sister and failed. Lakshmana therefore cut off her nose, breast, etc, and left her off. She reported this matter to her brother Ravana. Ravana to take revenge kidnapped Sita and not to rape her. He intended to take revenge and teach Rama a lesson. But failed due to his brother going against him.

Followers of Islam are called Muslims and it is a religious and not a racial or ethnic identity. A Muslim can be an Arab, Turk, Chinese, Malay, Punjabi, Bengali, Thamizh , White British Englishman or anyone. Thamizh people who follow Islam are called Thamizh Muslims, as they are Thamizh who are Muslim by religion, Understood. If you say someone is Muslim, the person can be a Malay Muslim or Bohra, an Arab , Albanian, Bosinian Slav, A Paestinian Arab or anyone. Only in Sri Lanka to divide and rule the Thamizh, Muslim became an ethnic identity and not a religious identity.

Strange only the Sri Lankan Thamizh Muslims or Moors as they love to call themselves, use the term Muslim as their ethnic identity, whereas the other Muslim communities like the Malays and Bohras correctly use their ethincity as their main identity and the term Muslim to denote their religious identiy, like in the rest of the world. As you can see the so called Sri Lankan Moors belong to these Thamizh Muslim castes or communities from Thamizh Nadu

It is hard to believe that the entire German nation was actively supportive of Hitler.
Did you check even with a fair sample of the 1.4 billion people to declare on their behalf .
There were a few despotic Muslim rulers. but the greatest ruler since Asoka was a Muslim, whatever his origin. He was perhaps far more accepted by the subjects than any Hindu ruler before or after. (BTW, there were a few terrible Moghul rulers.)
There were other great Muslim rulers. Tippu Sultan fought British occupation when Hindu rulers collaborated.
Atrocities were committed by most rulers against people of different identity.
What did the Pallavas do to the Jains after the king reconverted to Saivaism?
What was the record of the Pandiya rulers around 8-10th centuries
How kind were the Chola rulers to Vaishnavites? Why did Sri Ramanuja flee to Andhra?

“It has been well documented in the history records so it does not surprise me that they would have demolished a hindu temple and built a mosque over it.”
Even if this is true, it is still no evidence that:
          1) Babar Masjid was built atop a Hindu temple of any description
          2) All or even most Muslim rulers went on the rampage.

            Hello Shankar,
St Patrick’s Cathedral and Sialkot Cathedral and there are quite a few more churches. Your point is what?

            We have shaky memories.
Demolition of Babar Masjid happened when Narasimha Rao was PM. It was followed by anti-Muslim violence.
One has to understand the RSS agenda that goes a long way back.
The BJP is only the political facade of RSS fascism.
The politically driven verdict could not say that there was a Ram temple at the site. The is no archaeological evidence so far for that.
            *
Rama was most worshipped in Andhra-Telengana, which hold the most famous Ram temples exist.
Across India, Krishna is still the most popular avatar of Vishnu.
Of the Vaishnava Divadesams the vast majority are in South India.

            Hello Shankar,

I read the full Archaeological Report and The Court’s ruling – both were a travesty of professional conduct. The ASI invented (planted) evidence and ignored anything that would be detrimental to the Temple Case. The destruction of the Babri Masjid was a premeditated act led by the BJP/RSS. Political pressure from on high induced the Court to conclude that there was a Temple underneath. Just like Tony Blair’s “Weapons of Mass Destruction” this was a lie.
Please try to read the following book(s) and check all the evidence (complete with references) that is presented.
A.G. Noorani – The Babri Masjid Question, 1528-2003_ ‘A Matter of National Honour’ Volume 1-Tulika Books (2003) and Volume 2

The parody of it all is that those who get angry about weaponizing of archaeology in the North & East of Lanka rush to the defence of a Hindu fascist regime that does worse.
              Pathetic!

What Mr.; Latheef fails to omit is that there was an ancient Hindu temple venerating Lord Rama was destroyed and this mosque was built upon it. The site is where Lord Rama supposed to have been born. The mosque built over the destroyed Hindu temple during Barbar’s time is just a few centuries old, but the ancient Hindu temple that was destroyed sacred to all Hindus was thousands of years old. The supposed birthplace of Lord Rama. It may be true or not but the fact it to deliberately insult the Hindus and Mughal invaders committed sacrilege by destroying this ancient Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Rama built on the site where he was born. Will Muslims/Christians these sorts of sacrilege to be committed to them at their important places of worship.

      Hello Panda Kutti,

I deplore the destruction of any Ancient Structure and in the UK there are laws against it. I don’t know anything about Sri Lankan law on Ancient Structures, but I am sure that some of you will know. How it works in India is anybody’s guess. I also deplore this one – In March 2001, the Islamic fundamentalist Taliban regime in Afghanistan blew up the culturally significant Buddha sculptures Salsal and Shahmama after declaring them to be un-Islamic. I wonder if Mr Latheef also disapproves? Anyway what’s next for destruction – the Jaj Mahal?

There is a lot of distortion and denial of important aspects of the history of the sub-continent.
The project is on in a big way for over two decades now. It has accelerated under Modi.

“The site is where Lord Ram supposed to have been born.”? The whole of Ramayana stands on supposition. If you go to analyze the happenings of Ramayana you may be able to write another epic.

The UP and Indian government has given a huge piece of land very close to Barbari Mosques site to build a Mosque and plans are being made by Islamic organizations in India and overseas, to build a mosque rivalling Taj Mahal. Mr Latif is very silent about this or the amount of Hindu temple that were destroyed in east Sri Lanka by Islamic home guards and mosques built over them one even converted to a beef stall and a supermarket by Hechu Balla. or the Chingkallams trying to destroy ancient Hindu temples in the north and east and build Buddha shrines on top of them. He does not cry about the plight of the local Muslims but keep on crying on about Palestinians and every other foreign Muslim. I am not a Hindu nor a Muslim.

      Pandiya,
There are such thing called Hindu temples in Sri Lanka. What you call Hindu temples are actually Shiva kovils, which were built by Sinhalese. Because Sinhalese worship God Shiva as well.

Chingkalla lunatic, strangely with an Iberian name, belong to the lunatic hardcore Chingkalla Buddhist racist fringe, very soon your lot will claim that Chingkallams only invented the Thamizh language. Yes, the ancient Chingkallavar worshipped Lord Sivan and Thamizh god Murugan, Thamizh village deity Ayannar now called in Chingkallam Ayanayake and many other Thamizh Hindu deities as they were Thamizh Saivites, before they converted to Buddhism on a mass scale and gradually evolved as modern day Chingkallms. The king who converted to Buddhism was a Saivite Thamizh Naga, we do not know his actual name, but his father was king Mootha Sivan a pure Thamizh name meaning the great or venerated lord Siva. His older brother was king Maha Sivan, proving there were all Saivite Thamizh Nagas. Mutha (Mootha) or Muthiyan is an honourable title give to an elder in Thamizh from which the Vedda/ Chingkalla title Mudiyansalege originated.

In ancient times one of the ancient Thamizh name for the island was Chingkalla Theevu meaning the red or copper coloured Land/Island, and the Thamizh or Semi/Proto Thamizh speaking Dravidian Naga and Yakka tribes were called Chingkallavar, this later got Prakritised to Sinhala when the newly language and identity evolved in the south of the island, after the large scale conversion of the largely Semi Thamizh speaking Yakka population in the southern, central and western parts of the island to Buddhism and the onslaught of Pali/Prakrit on their spoken Thamizh dialect with the arrival of Buddhism. If the modern day Chingkallams are still worshipping Lord Siva, Murugan, Aiyanar/Ayanayakke and a host of other Thamizh Hindu deities, including Kannaki/Pattini , despite being Buddhist is due to their ancient largely Thamizh ancestry that is still being reflected.

“Where the Jaffna Nallur Kanthasamy Kovil is located now is not its original spot, as the original temple was destroyed by the Portuguese who used the materials to construct a church on its site. Should the church be demolished, and a Kovil be reconstructed on that spot to address historical injustice? I doubt it. A good portion of the Tamils have converted to Christianity, and history also belongs to them. The church is designated as an archaeological site, and, based on my past knowledge, regular services are minimal to conform to that status. Something similar should have happened to the Babri mosque. It could have been made an archaeological site ALONE for both the traditions with minimal religious services. One example is the Tanjore Brihatheeswara temple built by Rajaraja Cholan in Tamil Nadu. Religious services are very minimal to prevent damage to the structure.

Two important factors. The Nallur Kandasamy temple that was originally built on 948 AD was not built upon any site that was supposed to be the birthplace of Lord Murugan, like the church of Nativity in Bethlehem, imagine if it was deliberately destroyed by the Muslims and a Mosque built, just like the way Hagia Sofia was converted from a Christian place of worship to a mosque, will you that generous with your thoughts? . Therefore, the Nallur temple was rebuilt on a close by site. It was rebuilt during the European colonial era and these European colonials would never have allowed a Christian place of worship that was built on an ancient destroyed Hindu temple to be destroyed.

However, the ancient temple of Ram that was thousands of years old and was sacred to the Hindus, especially to the Northern Indias was built on the supposed birthplace of Lord Ram and it was deliberately desecrated by the Muslim Mughal rulers. This is the supposed birthplace of Lord Ram and there was a temple there until it was deliberately destroyed, and a mosque built upon it, and this ancient temple signifies this, just like the Church of Nativity for the Christians. You cannot ask the Church to be rebuilt anywhere else and similarly the Ram temple has to be rebuilt where Lord Ram was supposed to have been born and was there for thousands of years until it was destroyed by the Mughal invaders, Understood. Do not let your Christian fanaticism cloud your judgement. It is the Mosque that was built upon this extremely important and culturally significant place for Hindus, the birthplace of Lord Ram that has to be moved.

Why was the mosques built there in the first place? The answer is to show power and to deliberately humiliate the Hindus and build it in one of their most sacred places. Just like the way the Portuguese and Dutch did in the Thamizh North and East of the island and destroyed 508 Hindu temples and used their stones to build churches forts, many on the site of the destroyed temple.

Lastly the Thamizh are more secular and rational than the Hindus of Northern India. To an average Thamizh (excluding the Sri Lankan Thamizh Muslims or Moors as they love to call themselves), their Thamizh identity is far more important and takes precedence far more than their Hindu, Christian, Islamic or Jain religious identity or even their caste identity. Remember religions like Christianity (not the forced conversions by the Portuguese) and Islam came to the Thamizh lands from ancient times and far more peacefully through trade and other means, than the way it arrived in the northern parts of the Indian subcontinent through invasions, wars, and mass scale forced conversions. This is the reason the Thamizh are far more accommodating and accepting towards other religions amongst fellow Thamizh who non-Hindus are. The vast and rich Thamizh literature also reflects this.

            • 6
              1

This is the reason Thamizh Hindus be they in South India or in Sri Lanka will not do anything to hurt the sentiments of their fellow non-Hindu Thamizh and will accommodate them and their wishes, as they recognize them as also part of them. Hence the Nallur Kandasamy Kovil was built not on its original site, where there is an ancient church built during the Portuguese era, but close by. However, in religiously charged North India, where Hindu extremism and now rules they will not be accommodating, like down south like in Thamizh Nadu or Kerala, where the common Thamizh or Malayalam ethnic identity takes precedence over religion.

“Lastly the Thamizh are more secular and rational than the Hindus of Northern India.”

Yes, that’s why the “Thamizh” threw their shoes to protest Hindi as the national language. Very rational. Periyar was another “rationalist.” Chasing the Brahmins out of TN, now they are running companies like Google.

“Remember religions like Christianity (not the forced conversions by the Portuguese) and Islam came to the Thamizh lands from ancient times and far more peacefully through trade and other means”

No doubt, Christianity and Islam, most peaceful religions. Except in Kattankudy, right? Your heroes showing the world “the Thamizh are far more accommodating and accepting towards other religions.”

Toni more than 90% of the Indian Muslims like the Muslims or Sri Lanka are not descended from invaders or outsiders like traders, a small minority from the ruling classes may be, mostly partially but are local converts to Islam, mostly from the lower castes, converted to escape the Hindu caste system. Many were also forcibly converted. The Kasargod region in North Kerala is now an Islamic stronghold, due to the fact many of the Hindu population there were forcibly converted to Islam during the reign of Tippu Sultan. He forcibly converted most of the Nair, Menon, Brahmin, Nambiar and other Hindu castes in this region to Islam.
