Ranil Really Is Mahinda Rajapaksa’s Best Friend

By Kath Noble

Kath Noble

Everybody knows about the crisis in the UNP. Of the many elections there have been in Sri Lanka in the last two decades, it has lost all but one. This includes four presidential elections and four out of five parliamentary elections. And it will have the opportunity to lose a few more in September, as the Eastern, North Central and Sabaragamuwa Provinces go to the polls.

In the last general election, it could secure only 29% of the popular vote, worse than either of the two major parties have fared in a very long time.

The main reason for its failure was identified last year in a survey by the Centre for Policy Alternatives. It found that less than 20% of Sinhalese support the UNP. And although the party does rather better than the SLFP with minorities, it has to compete with ITAK, which is backed by more than 50% of Tamils, the CWC with about 30% of Up Country Tamils and the SLMC and NUA, which together have the backing of some 35% of Muslims. Meanwhile, the SLFP is the preferred party of nearly 75% of Sinhalese – Sinhalese being nearly 75% of the population, this alone gives it a good shot at 55% of the popular vote.

To have any hope of ending its losing streak, the UNP needs to rebuild its base among Sinhalese.

Ranil Really Is Mahinda Rajapaksa’s Best Friend

Some analysts argue that the SLFP’s popularity is due to the war victory, so we shouldn’t be surprised by the number or scale of its electoral successes, which have given Mahinda Rajapaksa amongst other things a two thirds majority in Parliament – a feat that was supposedly impossible with proportional representation. That a more balanced distribution of power would be good for the country is widely accepted. They suggest that things will get back to ‘normal’ in a while, even if no action is taken. In other words, there is no cause for concern. However, such confidence in the automatic revival of the Opposition is misplaced. Voters are more discerning than they think. Having ended a war is no guarantee of support, as Winston Churchill found out within months of Hitler’s death – the British public acknowledged his brilliant wartime leadership and were grateful, but many of them preferred to have somebody else in charge of the recovery. Sri Lankans would have done the same if the UNP had presented them with an attractive alternative.

The fact that in the most recent local election – more than two and a half years after the end of the war – the UNP lost strongholds like Kandy that it had held for over five decades demonstrates that there is every reason to worry.

The problem, which I find it hard to believe anybody can fail to see, is Ranil Wickremasinghe.

Ranil really is Mahinda Rajapaksa’s best friend. He is irreversibly associated with two policies that much of the Sri Lankan public – certainly the vast majority of Sinhalese – regard as anathema. Also, Ranil doesn’t seem to have changed his mind about them. These are his enthusiasm for appeasement and his commitment to neo-liberal economics. And Ranil isn’t just keen on these policies. He is a radical adherent. His Regaining Sri Lanka programme envisaged a sharp reduction in the role of the state in pretty much every sector, no matter how cherished. And he wasn’t just willing to do whatever it took to do a deal with the LTTE, he went so far as to ridicule the Government’s military campaign almost until it reached the banks of Nanthikadal.

He has not admitted that he was wrong. Indeed, he often sounds as though he would do it all again if he had the chance.

In addition to being a liability with voters, Ranil is not even able to hang onto the few members his party does manage to get elected. Dozens of his MPs have crossed over to the Government, especially in the last seven years. Of course this is the result of the smart manoeuvring of Mahinda Rajapaksa, but the Opposition too has to be smart. There’s nothing wrong with the Government making use of MPs’ interest in ministerial positions to boost its numbers – this is politics. (Of course it would be good to set a constitutional limit to the number of ministers an administration can appoint.) But Ranil should be able to take advantage too. He should be capitalising on the growing dissatisfaction within the SLFP at the dominance of Mahinda Rajapaksa and his family and their plans for his succession.

I can’t think of many other democratic countries in which the same person has been in charge of a major party for as long as Ranil Wickremasinghe. In the UK, Tony Blair took over as party leader just a couple of months before Ranil became leader of the UNP. Even though he won three successive terms for the British Labour Party, in 1997, 2001 and 2005, he was still compelled to hand over power to a successor after ten years as Prime Minister. Meanwhile, the British Conservative Party changed its leader four times until it found David Cameron, who finally defeated Labour in 2010. Imagine their fate if they had stuck with John Major! It is standard practice to bring in new faces – and hopefully also new ideas and new energy – from time to time, even when things are going well. Ranil has been party leader for 18 years, almost all of which have been spent out of office, yet still nobody has been able to replace him.

In the circumstances, it is quite ridiculous for the UNP to accuse Mahinda Rajapaksa of clinging onto power, when he has only been in charge for seven years. The worst dictatorship in Sri Lanka is to be found in the UNP.

This is exactly the argument made by those who have crossed over.

The struggle to eject Ranil has been going on for most of Mahinda Rajapaksa’s time in office. And it has occasionally looked pretty serious – recall the awful death of Rienzie Algama, who set himself on fire outside Sirikotha in July 2010.

Ranil’s eventual agreement to initiate an annual secret ballot to select the party’s key office-bearers seemed to offer some hope of change. However, the constituency was only the Working Committee, and Ranil easily won the first round in December 2011 – he beat Karu Jayasuriya by 72 votes to 24. (Polling all party members would obviously give a much better idea of the mood in the country than asking a group of people who are either directly appointed by Ranil or indirectly depend on him.) That there were many in the party who were desperately unhappy with the result was made clear by the violence that engulfed Sirikotha soon after it was declared.

Now this violence is being used as a pretext to undo even this very small reform, with the Working Committee announcing last week that the party leader will henceforth be chosen for terms of not one but six years. They say this is essential for party unity.

Frankly, why does the party need to be united in defeat?

In any case, party unity is overrated. Plenty of leaders, from Margaret Thatcher to Mahinda Rajapaksa, and even leaders of the UNP in its more dynamic era, have won elections despite vicious infighting – it can even bring out the best in them.

Six year terms will enable Ranil to stay on until 2018. That is until after the next general election.

This must be music to the ears of Mahinda Rajapaksa. His strategy is clear – he intends to make the UNP face one election after another in the next few years, to keep its members obsessed with party unity. They will think twice about agitating against their leader if they are constantly in campaign mode. And they won’t have the spirit to resist Ranil when they are continually reminded of what bad shape the party is in, courtesy their regular election defeats. Because Mahinda Rajapaksa would love nothing better than to compete with Ranil for the presidency again – his unprecedented third term. He wants to ensure that the UNP never recovers from its crisis.

The UNP can’t play somebody else’s game. It must forget about the Eastern, North Central and Sabaragamuwa Provinces, which are not very important in comparison with what is at stake in Colombo, and instead refocus its efforts on choosing the most suitable leader and working out a new and more appealing programme for the next general election.

Thanks for this Kath Noble! Madam Maitree Wickramasinghe who claims to be a great feminist should also remember that the public is private, wake up and persuade Ranil to quit in order to save democracy in Lanka. For the fact is that as long as the other anti-democrat, Ranil Wickramasinhe fails to relinquish power in the UNP – THERE IS NO ALTERNATIVE TO RAJAPAKSE.
Civil Society needs to start protesting loudly against Ranil and get him to to find an exit strategy, become a Party senior or mentor (like Lee Kuwan Yew) and pass on the leadership of the UNP to someone who is capable of challenging Rajapakse and who embodies the liberal and pluralist values of the party – Rosy Senanayake for instance. Sajith Premadasa and Karu are really Sinhala nationalists, but would still be better than RW who is destroying democracy within the UNP which is able to challenge Rajapakse and thus destroying democracy in Lanka.
Ranil is next to Rajapakse the single biggest obstacle to peace and democracy in Lanka and MRs best friend, like all the Colombo HR NGOs like CPA etc, are too cosy with Ranil and wife who claims to be a great feminist!
Have not feminists always said that the private is public? By the same coin – the public is private and its time now for Maitree to stop free riding and stop being a hypocrite and kindly quit and ask her husband who is ruining not just the UNP but Lanka to QUIT.

Sarath Fonseka was the only alternative to Mahinda Rajapakse. But, Mahinda Rajapakse’s political enemies – Ranil and Mangala – were dumb and screwed up Sarath Fonseka. Mahinda Rajapakse gained from that by taking away “legally” the civic rights of Sarath Fonseka.

yes indeed time for the cosy networks between colombo NGOs that claim to be doing Human Rights and Democracy work and the Ranil Maitri Wickramasinghe duo that has supported Ranil to continue to destroy the UNP need to be exposed., Maitree cultivates the colombo NGOs, particularly women’s groups to get support for hubby..
Its all part of the rot in so called civil society that is on the international conference circuit!

Has Kath Noble only npw woken up to the reality that Ranil is mahina’s best friend? Tut, tut. Very shortsighted for someone professing to be a political journalist.

I thought her article was dead on, and a far cry from a good number of so called ‘native’ or expat political journalists of a more senior position. Good job Kath. You stick to the facts and don’t over load us with propaganda. This is how journalism is supposed to be.

Ranil desperately clings to his rather weak position, while doing the country, and his party a great disservice.
He is like a dog in a manger, not making room for others to step in and perhaps do a better job as an opposition party leader. He has failed miserably, but still prefers to break bread with Rajapaksa, and make nice, while doing nothing productive as an opposition member, to stop the rampant corruption, and crime, in the country. Where is the outrage that journalists are kidnapped, murdered, or missing?, where is outrage that government politicians are getting away with murder and rape?
Ranil has let down the country, and done nothing to help the people. He is a complete failure in leadership.

Of course, some people are still angry with Ranil because he did not have the heart to massacre thousands innocent civilians ( I am not talking about the armed LTTE cadres) of his own country with MBRL, long rangs artelleries, cluster bombs, chemical weapons..etc…….when he was in power.

Read your history my friend ‘Real Peace’, he has plenty of blood on his hands, yet no one cries out human rights violations. His party is responsible for quit a lot of human lives being lost, and I mean Sinhalese as well as Tamils. You don’t hear the Sinhalese wailing and moaning for political gain, they apparently have more self-respect.

British Bell Pottinger & Company seem to explore evry possible opprtunity and person for their monies worth paid by the Tax payers of this country to project the image of MR locally and Internationaly. Bell Pottinger & Co. having exhausted Journalists of repute locally to do the honours now has to turn to their own ilk to write crap for their supper. If MR fails it is the end of the road to Bell Pottinger, as Ranil will discontinue their services. Hence Bell Pottinger has to, some or other keep MR’s hopes alive and have joined the bandwagon of the Local Ranil Bashers, for the obvious fear that sooner than later Ranil will turn tables. To begin with if as these critics of Ranil claim, that he is a weakling with no support base, as MR has hijacked the Sinhalese majority. If as alleged the UNP has lost the minoritie’s support, then MR will continue for life by having Ranil in place. Besides this writer very clearly states that Ranil is MR’s best friend. Then why castigate Ranil and try to remove a weak person as him, who is advantages to MR, for whose love? Further what does this writer knows about local politics, to write with such authority? She, like MR’s supporters brags about the number of victories that MR has had and the number of times Ranil has lost. Everyone knows how MR has won all the elections including the first with a slender margin after having deals with VP of the LTTE itself, while accusing Ranil for same and disenfranchising more than the majority received from the South. She goes further to accuse Ranil and state that he is not smart enough to retain the MPs in the UNP fold as a good number have crossed over to MR’s govt. side. Indeed so and everyone knows the reason how MR has lured them and good many of them have enough skeletons in their cupboards, where MR has blackmailed the whole lot. Does this writer seriously suggest that Ranil should be another MR, an uncooth Fraudster, Murderer and Cheat? Kath, at least try to live up to your name as Noble and not descend to such depths of gutter Journalism to decide for us Sri Lankans as the majority does not want to replace MR with another MR type, but prefer to have an HONEST, SINCERE, DEDICTED, KNOWLEDGEBLE, EDUCATED and not a synthetic product, who will not rob Public Funds for the first family as happening now, or get Drug Barons to kill own party supporters and pretend to suffer from amnesia. The Nation is yerning for Law and Order and for economic development for the masses to have a better life, whereas presently it is only MR nad his Cohorts do so, even attending the Olympics in the UK, enriching your country at the cost to the Tax Payer here. At least herein after before you write CRAP, use your grey matter if you have any. I am sure you will be able to earn more than you do now as a Journalist, if you patronise the British Night Clubs that was in the news recently. Then againg it depends because the Brits seem to prefer the dark skins in comparison to boiled prawns.

For your information he was quite knowledgeble, well read and could deliver a speech impromptu. See the hanszards for his speeches. True he had other weaknesses. Give the devil his due. I do not believe you are a patch on him. His elloquence was excellent.

Kath Noble, Who the hell is this stupid Kath Noble? These stupids think just because they could write some rubbish they know everything! In fact, buffalos like the writer are the real obstacles to the truth and people of Sri Lanka. [Edited out] has been employed by Bell Pottinger & Company and hence is in the payroll of MR. This type of corrupt and shameless people would write any rubbish and swallow any filth to sustain an infamous existence. For the information of this bird-brainer lady and other stupid morons who wrote stupid comments, Ranil is the last hope of democracy for Sri Lanka and its people. To tell the truth to this exotic moronic writer, it is the Presidency won by Ranil that Mahinda robbed by bribing the LTTE in millions of rupees. That is where MR injected deception, corruption, theft and plundering into Sri Lankan democracy! From there on everything MR did was a fraud and violation of law and destruction of law and order and democracy. Thereafter each and every election conducted in this country has been rigged and riddled with malpractices corruption cheating and every imaginable act of violation and malpractice. There is no need for digging this over and over again because these are stark realities known by the people here yet this stupid lady doesn’t seem to understand. I ask one question from this stupid lady: Instead of writing these rubbish and useless verbiage about Ranil, why don’t you fucking hell go and ask Ban Ki Moon, Hillary Clinton, UN, UNHRC etc. what fucking actions they have taken against the war criminal, war crimes, perpetrators of war crimes and genocide, all the appalling HR violations committed by MR and his regime, breaching of all the international treaties about good governance, human rights, labour laws etc. signed by Sri Lanka and gradual destruction of democracy in this country by a despotic maniac? You fucking idiots, you have no answers to these questions. Your West, your America, your Britain merely want to take this country under your imperialistic, exploitery and subjugatory grip under the pretext of war crimes and human rights! You ain’t going to do a fucking shit about these crimes committed by the regime, will you? Just name a single action, a single measure taken by your fucking UN or Hilary against the colossal crimes committed and continue to commit by the rogue regime! Don’t write jokes fucker!

Silva, I well understand your ire. Probably I would have prefered to use the same tone and tenor to express. However we must act with a certain degree of decorum as this is a public Forum. When you see some of the comment posters who are holding with this Kath Wicked, these are the swines who eat Pig Shit that Gota refered.

This Rubert(Rupert) Banderkoon, is definitely a JVPer who seem to suffer from the JVP being wiped out and is continung to hammer Ranil with Batalanda, where as Ranil was exonerated of all charges framed by this type of JVPers who thought they could lynch Ranil at an Inquiry by a Commission appointed by CBK during her tenure as President. So what for the talking now Rubert Banderkoon? The Bus has gone!

        0

Gamini, I understand your concern regarding forum niceties and decorum etc. I really do appreciate your determination and purpose to keep to accepted good traditions, heritages and established norms of conduct and social intercourse and comment policies. That is the way a civilized society does and should behave. The present crisis of UNP too is due to this because there are only a handful of citizens in the country today that have a decent character morality and a decent understanding of the problems in the country. Majority of people are less gifted and hence they do not see the value and potential benefits of leaders like Ranil. Their limited gallery mentality appeals more towards empty vessels like Sajith, Dayasiri etc.

However, with the arrival of Mahinda Rajapakshas into Sri Lanka’s polity and the subsequent destruction and erosion of every form of social political institutional organizational and religions structures and establishments and the general degeneration and disintegration of every department of living and human existence premeditated planned calculated and perpetrated by this Rajapakish terror state and many unforeseen side effects shoots and upshots of this corrupt and terror regime, many people like us find it hard to continue the good traditions of social intercourse. You see, they come and gang rape an under-aged child whose very sexual organs are not yet developed, they would come and chase you away from your property and acquire your land, your land is owned through a forged deed by somebody powerful and related to the regime, they slaughter your child and the police finds that the death was due to an accident, the regime sells you adulterated petrol, diesel, cement, medicines etc. and the engines get destroyed and no one is responsible, the poorest worker’s EPF is plundered through stock market frauds by the billions and the sweat-shedders don’t even know of what is happening, you ask for fuel price reduction and they give you (a passerby really) a bullet leaving a poor fisherman family stranded and left to starve and die (one victim’s dependent committed suicide due to being deprived of breadwinner), they gamble with our lives, our resources, our money, our health, our education, our future-so the society have reached their breaking point, their whole existence has been disrupted and therefore they are losing their good traditions one by one. Besides, exorcism does not and cannot happen under moral decorum and norms of eloquence, rather devils deserve and must be meted out the lowest forms of call and address only which they really understand! Everybody has tried his very best of democratic moral and ethical way of appeal and request to this regime. A/L students implored and even went to the courts that please don’t mess up with our education, we have borne tremendous pains in preparing for our A/L exam which determines our future and the way we live for the rest of our lives! What did they do? Despite the courts order they messed up the Z Score for the 2nd time as well! Why the f…..g hell we should remain decent law-abiding well-spoken good citizens while we are subjected to the meanest possible contempt by the regime?

These cheap poorly sane and immoral cheats are preaching morality and mannerism of speech! Can you rogue social reformists say what happened to that girl who sang the eulogist song “Maharajaneni”, who and who did she sleep with? If that happened to your daughter what would you do or say? I am sure these fake dollar voracious perverted Rajapakish goons would sell their daughters and make it too a livelihood!

What the hell this Kath [Edited out] say of a problem in the UNP? There is no problem at all, really! UNP has a few stupid MARA planted foot-stumbles like Sajith, Dayasiri, Maithree etc. Everybody knows they are working against the party, that they are in collusion with the regime. So these stupids ask why don’t you remove them which is exactly what the regime wants Ranil to do. If they are removed they will form an alternative opposition and the nonplused ordinary UNPers will be divided into two warring factions which is what MARA wants to see happen and Ranil wants to prevent! This is a great political game which the ordinary people with limited perception cannot understand. On to the bargain they would get a court order as well! Ranil is keeping shut the Pandora’s box breach of which can create a whole array of issues in the party. You can’t compare instant noodles and bird-brainer journalists with mature and seasoned politicians like Ranil. Can you just imagine the storms of conspiracies one after another, from the press to the electronic, from the government channels to the private channel, from within the party to from the government quarters, from the faithful Deputy to the promiscuous provincial politician, the enormous forces and challenges Ranil encountered and managed to overcome to save this one party UNP from disintegration and irrelevance. If you want to defeat MARA regime and form a new government just go to the polling booth and cast your vote for UNP! It is so simple! Provided however, they don’t rig the election next time too because MARA has mastered the art of vote rigging!

Silva I understand your pain of mind and I share your sentiments. Except that I restrain myself in a public forum as this, the best way to get even with any of the apologists, is to go down to their level and meet them. I agree they have been taking the mickey out of us thinking we will stick to Westminister Rules while they behave as bloody Rowdies. There is nothing to prevent us behaving or becoming Rowdies as that is the only language they understand and I quite agree with you. I had the opportunity to alter the destiny of this country a few times personally. I refrained because of my family, as I would not have known what would have happened to them had I done so. If I was single I would have certainly accomplished with relish as I care less whether I live or die, when I see their impunity and callouness. I believe it is the only way out for this Nation and not through Elections that are fixed.

Ranil is a refrigerator. The top part is a freezer (it’s all frozen), nevertheless a cool home appliance. MR is a gas burner with an oven. Ugh, I smell something burning. Man, our house is on fire! And we have a bunch of rocket scientist sitting in our Parliament. Great! No worries, in the very near future they will make some arrangements to send us all to heaven where we could meet up with our long gone essential commodities! Kath Noble, What is your problem? Is it money? Is it that you want to be recognized for your writing efforts? If it is the latter then choose something true and realistic or some abstract poetry or something. Here you have tried your best to defend and justify subtlely a despot and its rogue regime by utter unfounded baseless and faceless lies and wrong arguments and assumptions! You have advertised your moronicity and stupidity in no uncertain terms and this would very soon drive you to the dustbin of journalism! If it is the latter then you can earn more money by simply visiting Sri Lanka and roaming on the streets around President’s house-these days the government’s politicians are full of cum stocks as a result of devouring the best of foods and comforts out of the money plundered from the poor people in the country! By the way, please remove the “Noble” piece in your name and substitute it with “loser”!

“Ranil really is Mahinda Rajapaksa’s best friend”, says Kath Noble. The sad story is that UNP got nobody else to lean on. Karu hopped with the demoCRAZY group to Mahinda side. Sajith seems to be much closer to Rajapakse brothers than Ranil. Ravi and Mangala were not originally from UNP, no trust there. John is a catholic. Tissa is not ready yet. But…. UNP has to start somewhere. Like Kath observed, staying as a perpertual loser (of many many elections) and perpertual Opposition Leader for a major party can happen only here.

By the way, I am very worried about Kath Noble bashing. We try to shoot the messenger. Interestingly, many wonder whether Kath is in anyone’s payroll. That itself is an open confirmation of what the people think about all Sri Lankan journalists. Please try to comprehend the message, don’t focus on the writer.

Sri Lanka = Miracle of Asia.

Most of the Opposition political leaders and the ‘residue’ of the displaced protaganists of the decadent West(who generally are supporters of the UNP) seem so bankrupt in their knowledge of the dynamics of Sri Lanka society that they resort to the idea that the popularity of the UPFA government is solely based on the ability of the leadership to irradicate terrorism in the country and restore peace. Their envy, and hallowness of ideas make them incapable of accepting the achievements made after the conclusion of hostilities. Needless to say that the opposition should highlight issues when the government falters. Then again the above mentioned ‘residue’ resort only to slander similar to those undertaken by some on-line websites.
Whatever means adopted to hinder the social transformation of Sri Lanka in 1956 they were only able to delay the aspirations of the movement of the people, Puncha Maha Balawegaya. It seems like this movement is reaching its logical development and the President seems endowed with the stature and ability to play his part.

Chandra, with due respect I have heard of this story being trotted out by the apologists, where Banda gave leadership to the Panchamaha Balawegaya for the social transformation. The social transformation witnessed has been, one from the native levels to that of a Western atandard although it was earlier ridiculed as Pukka Shaibs.
Besides when Banda started, the social structure was represented by the Panchamaha Balawegaya. The Sanga, Veda, Guru, Govi and Kamkaru. The Kamkaru sector joined our social strata after the British introduced a system of governance and prior to that in the old system we only had Sanga, Veda, Guru and Govi only. Every sector had some vocation to fall back on. But after Banda introduced Socialism and centre left policies by subsequent Coalition Govts. 25 years after Independence, by the ’70s we had created another class called ‘Dugi’ who were eating off dustbins, living in shanties. Had this group been there earlier, it would have been called not Panchamaha Balavegaya, but Shadmaha Balawegaya. This is the Great Social Transformation achieved thanks to our Pundits in Politics the type Chandra advocate. Certainly we had a Poor class then, in this society but they were Quality Poor, who lived in at least a two bedroomed house, may be of wattle and daub, cadjan thatched. The family although poor had some decent meals and values upheld. What happened with the transformation that Chandra speaks of, where the Political leadership then shouted down with Capitalism and brought down the order. Today one can see the progeny of those whose hearts bled for the Poor of this country as the Ultra Rich in society. The presnt new found ‘Dugi’ class the so called transformation brought about, living in shanties have created a new culture known as ‘Shanty Culture’ that has thrown up many of them as the Countries Elite. The same has happened in China and many other countries that practised Socialism and Communism. But in all countries that practised Capitalism the work forces are better off and our citizens are risking life and limb to sail by boat as Human Refugees to these countries, including the ones that preach Socialism.

I think the monitors of this comment blog should try to make sure that comments are within their comment policies. Some commentators here have not adhered to the rules, and have lowered the standards here with foul language. It seems they want to display their hatred for the writer, and do not agree with the message.
Perhaps they find it hard to debate on substance, so resort to vitriol and bad language.

It is a great timely article. Weather she paid by somebody or not. she wrote the true facts. I encourage her to write more about this fool who destroyed the UNP.

Ranil is the best hope for a Rajapakse dynasty. Longer Ranil stays in the office of Leader of Opposition, the better for the Rajapakse brothers and their siblings.

She seems to have a far better grasp of our political system and certainly of the main opposition party under Ranil than many of our so called journo pundits. Her findings will for sure can be powerful ammunition in the hands of the rebel group within the party.

Let us assume a hypothetical situation that RW steps down from the leadership of the UNP and also the Opposition. Who is going to be the successor? Is it Karu or Sajith? All these Sajith supporters will be surprised to see how many UNPers will vote for him. Certainly those who are lobbying him at the moment, the so called Reformists will expecting position in the system. But the rest will not, as all know Sajith has no leadership qualities local or International and he has too many skeletons in his cupboard. MR will be only too happy, knowing that Sajith will be no match for him. If people believe that with RW remaining in the political scene there is doubt, of him succeeding, then one can be certain with Sajith in place there is no doubt whatsoever as it would be certain he never will. Therefore let us wait and see as this cannot go on for ever and ever. Maximum is another term only.

If this is so, then why does the opposition do nothing but find fault in the government. They have nothing to offer, if they really cared for the people they would move forward and help the government constructively doing what is good for the people. They live in a glass house and continue to throw stones. Nobody to blame but themselves for the bad state of their house.

The rationale of the unintelligent is blaming the passenger for the bad driving and not the driver. Why all point to the faults in the government is because it is they who are responsible for committing all the blunder and the villany. What is there for the Opposition to join and help the govt? What about those who crossed over from the UNP claiming to strenghen and straighten MR’s whatever? MH, Is this what you want to happen from the remaining in the Opposition as well?

John Amaratunga 70+,Joseph michael 70+Karu Jayasuriya 70+ and in the next election, they will be 75 going on to 80 in service. At this age,how
much pressure can they take? Why are they not interested in seeing the
vigour in the younger, popular and more educated good performers?Never mind whether it is Sajith or Dayasiri or the new Buddhika or Rosy or any other. Those who are very close to Ranil are close and loyal to him only for personal benefit.Ranil keeps them happy and they keep Ranil happy. You scratch my back and I’ll do your’s applied here for mutual benefit but at the cost of the party going to dogs.MR company has very successfully branded Ranil “a loser”.Ranil will never escape this and instead keep on confirming at all elections until UNP goes to Kanatte.

Gamini,we are not talking here of ultimate destination of all of us,but the destination of a vibrant party at the hands of a few selfish lot.A party that had survived worst disasters.A party that
        stood up against giants like,N M Perera,Felix Dias,Kolvin,PhilipG,
Bernard Soysa,S A Wickramasinha and many more ,one wind and that was a hurricane 1977.JRJ resigned from his constituency and made the then SLFP led govt to call by election, just to prove his point.Where’s that UNP today?Everyday Ranil is busy doing something to stop or control his own members getting stronger and
going an extra step. Why?You can have your favourites but on what
basis?Do you think all the cross overs were for perks and priviledges?I’m a friend of late Mano Wijeratne and I know he did
not go for perks.Ranil can not solve simple party issues. He was
never ever made to lead a party like UNP.LTTE made UNP a headless
chicken by eliminating Prema,Lalith and Gamini.Who was Ranil at the time? What had he built up to become a leader?Even for him,it
was jackpot.JRJ was determined. He was dedicated. He was tough and
fearless.A well prepared leader. Can you put this man by his side?If not, then forget about winning MR.Ranil must first win UNP before anything else happens.Don’t forget how Dudly avoided a rift within the party by making JRJ opposition leader.Great Dudly gave in, for the benefit and unity of the party. And another great JRJ changed the whole political map. This man Ranil is blocking all winning avenues. Is it then not Kanatte he’s taking the party to?He’s waiting for MR company to get tired and then the victory to come on a silver plate.

        • 0
          0

Whywhy, Why don’t you try to see the ground reality? During the time of giants like NM Perera, JRJ had not created executive residency. Those were the times when democracy did exist in the country barring may be a minor incident or two. The general fabric of democracy was intact and functioning. Everybody had the assurance and confidence that if they can garner majority opinion they could form a government. That was why and how JRJ could resign to face by elections and formed a government. However today there is an irreparable and irredeemable rupture in the very democratic structure which was created and catalyzed by former CJ Sarath N De Silva. That corrupt maggot colluded with uneducated MARA and misconfigured, tampered with and mutilated the law and caused two of the tree foundation pillars of democracy to conspire and collude to cause the disintegration of the very democratic system itself and gave politically motivated perverted series of judgments most critical one of which is for a people’s representative elected from one party can legally without any shame cross over to the ruling party. That was where the whole dam of checks and balances of democracy got breached and the whole system trained out. MARA used millions and millions of tax payers’ money and other funds earned through illegal and corrupt means to trap and entice opposition politicians failing which he also used numerous other methods including threats, intimidations, cooked up lawsuits, corruption charges etc. During all of these corrupt maneuvers the president enjoys his immunity, impunity, privileges, support of politicized state, legal, law enforcement, police, military, paramilitary and underworld gangs. He uses unqualified, untethered, absolute and unquestioned power and authority. No individual, collection, institution or establishment exists on this land that is capable of questioning, criticizing or taking punitive, redress or naming and shaming measures against the president. These are absolute, proven and stark realities that we all can observe. So given the backdrop of this scenario how on earth is the opposition leader expected to take a different set of actions other than the ones he is already taking? He has no media coverage because all the media has been silenced and made to sing to the king for supper, all the key institutions of the entire system has been usurped by MARA goons and minions, the courts and the police would never implement the law of the land, there is a vast massive amount of injustice, malpractice, corruption and crimes under the very eye and supervision of law enforcing authorities! Paid or turned lackeys of MARA have been infiltrated into UNP but the leader cannot take actions because it has other harmful attached consequences and reactions. If they are fired they get a court determination which would become another precedent like those delivered by maggot Sarath Silva. It has been built into the daily schedule of Sirasa and other state media to attack, mud sling and propagate utter falsehoods against Ranil! So when gullible laymen hear and see these misrepresentations they are nonplused as to what is true or false. No wonder silly brainless people like whywhy are surfacing from all over after witnessing all these falsehoods and failing to see the underlying reality. Another reason for this ignorance is the willful destruction of the education system of the country by the regime. Whey there are wise, decent and educated people like Ranil despots find it hard to survive whereas when you have lot of whywhys it is very easy to maintain the status quo with all the conflicts, fights, infights, quarrels and chaos.

Just for a fleeting moment let’s assume what this bird brainer journalist say is true: that Ranil is a failure and is the real stumbling block for the party’s progress and march towards victory. This bird brainer seems to claim that she knows Sri Lankan politics and its political history a-z. She reads 18 years out of Ranil’s political career like her face on the mirror. She throws at us well articulated current and historical political facts statistics and incidents better than a local one would do. She could read the minds of Sinhalese as well as the Tamils and Muslims, a clairvoyant who reads the writings on the wall! But this lady with this extraordinary perception conception wisdom and mystic powers ends her diatribe with these words: “…and instead refocus its efforts on choosing the most suitable leader and working out a new and more appealing programme for the next general election”!!! Why the f…..g hell does she make an awful ha ho in writing all this bullshit and then come up with thin air? You can’t just criticize someone so important and crucial to whole of Sri Lanka like Ranil and then just go away! You may be doing it in your own country but not here! You must put forward your solution to your imagined problem! If it is not Ranil then who is it that you say should be the party leader? You see, this is the problem with these Gota referred to as “shit eating shit journalists”! They just eat the shit from MARA GORA BARA SIRA NARA or Bell Pottinger and then leave behind lot of shit with big fart noise! These types of shit monger journalists are a burden and liability on balanced constructive and progressive journalism. I could have broken down and replied to all her diabolical lies one by one but don’t feel inclined to waste my time on this mudslinging article.

This paid-to-lie 3rd class journalist’s real motive is clear, on MARA’s payroll through Bell.. If as they claim Ranil is so weak then why the hell do they pay massive amounts of money to all the beggars including this [Edited out] to propagate falsehoods against Ranil? Why all the state media, Sirasa, state newspapers, government ministers, cabinet ministers, defectors, lackeys, goons and donkeys etc. are perpetually engaged in a fact distortion and suppression campaign spending a massive amount of money, efforts, time and strategy? Why do they want to remove Ranil and appoint a “strong” leader for UNP? Mustn’t they be rejoiced and move on with their merry ways with a sense of relief? Huh.. this is bullshit at its best! History and our ancestors can’t be wrong. They said “only the fruit bearing tree is thrown at stones” (pala athi rukatai gal gahanne). This despotic government’s cardinal threat is Ranil. They know Ranil can and will put this country back on track. He shall re-empower the people, revive the dismantled democratic institutions and usher a new era for the country with concrete tangible and factual development both in physical and humane realm. If and when that happens Madamulana rogues will be obliterated from the history of this country and that is what they are afraid of and trying to prevent from happening at whatever cost! The Pol Pot, Hitler, Saddam Hussein, Quaddafi and all the rest of that category had to go, paid the penalty for their crimes. Compared to them ours is a sparrow in his dying age! When their turn comes let’s see what will happen to this despot its retinue his plundering family and all the robbers around him!

Silva, thanks for putting across so succinctly to the myopic who think Ranil is a weak leader, to realise the true potential of Ranil. For Ranil to survive alone, when there are under currents from within and outside the Party, manoeuvred by friend and foe, to hold on to leadership itself is an achievement and proves his ability and potential. There have been secret and open ballots claiming there are better individuals than Ranil. What happened in the end? The latest now is to accuse Ranil of helping MR. If that be so, I cannot understand the logic of MR apologists taking offence because they should be happy on the contrary. Here again, it is like branding Ranil as a Traitor for gifting one third of land mass and two thirds of sea front to the Tamil LTTE by signing the CFA. But when Ranil asks, if so why VP did not help him to be the President, instead helped MR, none of the proponents of this Traitor allegation is able to answer and they are silent. The sgaciousness of Ranil Wickremasinghe is not understood by these nincompoops and the rest are crafty to villify him with the support from these dumb idiots, for them to replace Ranil Wickremasinghe and feel important in society with the new Administration alligning to the successor.

Why did Ranil choose not to contest the last Presidential election? What was his strategy?Again what was his strategy behind supporting SF? He was ready to work under SF?SF was a wild card and Ranil was a lost card!Is it not the case?We all are shouting of govt wasting public
money in billions but what did UNP do to clearly lose an election?Ask
any child, you get an answer. You can lose to Bandas.People can understand! But to MR&Co,to their games and at this rate, you must have
    special talent to lose!

Whywhy, it appears you are unaware of the ground realities committed. Elections have been rigged by both Parties in power in some form or other when in power till the tricks in the book run out and the change occurs. First it is a case of impersonation, casting votes of others (Hora Votes), coercing Election Officers at counting centres with inducements and the last the Computer Gilmart by Physically hijacking the Elections Commissionner to announce a cooked up Result as at the last Presidntial Election. The chances of repeating any of the above are remote but not impossible. In such a situation had Ranil contested the last Presidential Election, today he is history. It was proved that SF although not the suitable candidate, to effect the change required, he was allowed as most who despiced MR including those who helped him first, the majority are displeased with him now. See what happened? So you think Ranil is a Fool? Whywhy, we are living at a time where from Games to Court Cases to Killings to Elections are all FIXED thanks to the gullibility of the masses of all Nations, especilly ours.

        Cool!Cool!Gamini,I didn’t say I take Ranil for a fool.I try to see
things through the eyes of ordinary voters who at the end of the day decide what they want!I was among three top competitors who predicted 1977 election results neck to neck.Nobody would find it easy to bet that heads like NM,Kolvin,Bernard,S A Wickramasinha,
Felix,Prince and even Daha will roll in that election. The competition was held by Lake house. Why i’m saying this is,just to
dismiss your calculation that I may be unaware of ground reality.
It was an issue for UNP that it didn’t field a candidate. In voter
language,Ranil ran away from defeat. This is the point you will have to defeat even in the next president’s election, pls remember
that.Vote rigging is part of third world’s good governance my dear.Third world is full of liars and cheats.Tomorrow UNP will not change this and instead endorse it,you know why, every liar and cheat is a “voter”.I have high respects for JRJ because of his readiness at his age,FOR CHANGE.He rolled the whole system.
Anyone can now easily carry it forward and improve it.But noone can easily reverse it.Finally Gamini it’s Ranil who’s unaware of ground reality and walking two three feet high.Thanks.

Whywhy it is not Ranil who is unaware of ground reality, but those critics of Ranil are the ones who are unaware of ground reality. The Presidential election after disenfranchising almost 400,000 votes in the South definite Ranil Votes, what was the majority that MR received? Only 180,000. This is after Ranil being branded as a Traitor and an LTTE supporter signing the CFA. Where did Ranil get such number of votes if not from the grass roots? Unfortunately every election held after that are flawed, that the true picture is not reflected. Even today if a free and fare election is held it will show the true picture. It is a sad situation individuals as Whywhy who are misinformed about the ground realities are further strengthening MR’s stand, by making baseless utterances and making that much difficult for an Honest Vissionery Leader as Ranil to come through. The damage caused by Whywhy type are more serious than the felony committed by MR. So I would humbly request for all those who now know MR, to refrain from falsely slandering Ranil. As your action is akin to cutting your nose to spite your face. Leave everything out, the mere HONESTY of Ranil in a situation where every other person is corrupt in this society, does it not suffice to have such a leader as the Head of State?

This is the sorry state of Sri Lanka today! For the 4th time now within a matter of several months this war criminal government has imported adulterated fuel! They just don’t learn a thing, do they? In the same way imbeciles like whywhy-what the f….g hell is that name? This forum donkey doesn’t even have a name or a face!-are writing utterly silly rubbish and rabbit nonsense thinking they have a wonderful knowledge about everything on earth! Given the mentally retardedness of the majority of the racist, chauvinistic Sinhalese Buddhists and their war and tribal mentality and considering how rogue regime used and fornicated war victory to their self-aggrandization and fallacy marketing, Ranil knew precisely whom the stupid Sri Lankans would vote for. That is why he fielded SF for presidency. Plus Ranil knew quite well that it is the SF trump card that can deal the death blow to MR’s war victory marketing plan! Although this whywhy donkey does not understand it is SF who really won the election and MARA’s vote rigging and SF incarceration shattered MARA’s war marketing strategy as well as his political and so called patriotic image. Thousand upon thousand SLFPers began to resent MR due to SF incarceration and the injustice done to him! And Ranil foresaw this! That is the beauty of it which shows the caliber and sagaciousness of the politician in Ranil. If not for SF no other human in the whole world would deal the death blow SF dealt to MR. A great political leader is not one that always tries to do everything by himself like MARA is doing. Rather he is one who is sensitive and cognitive to the sentiments of the people of the country. Given the stupid narrow and tribal tendency of the stupid Sinhalese Buddhists Ranil used the ideal resource he could avail of to attack MR. To better understand the dumb stupidity of Sinhala Buddhist Donkeys just think of how SWRDB came to power by selling national linguistic and religious sentiments of the majority, just think how Chandrika came to power fooling the stupid masses by a piece of bandage and plaster, and this war criminal MR how he took the Sinhalese donkeys for a ride by printing and dangling an equally stupid Mahinda Chanthanaya (where the f….g hell is this f…..g Chanthanaya now? Did it say they will import adulterated fuel or rob the EPF fund by the billions etc.?) So truth decency and morality are an anathema to donkeys like whywhy-just look at this filthy name considering the stupid comments it posts! The sole aim of these sinners is to keep this country in perpetual agony conflict misery and poverty! Don’t be deceived by them!

Pls identify the rogues and lunatics by the smell of their filthy tongues. And these are the ones in waiting to become goons of tomorrow’s Ranil regime.I don’t want to go to a “pigs”farm.Silva’s name is matching his tongue.

Whywhy, you have to understand the ire of Silva and just cannot escape trying to throw the towel at him. There is no point in trying to be innocent or decent after setting the ball rolling, maliciously slandering Ranil. When the filthy tongue of Gota was wagging, why were you silent the peritan you are?

The point raised here is not about who’s better between MR and Ranil but about what Ranil is doing behnd the scenes and whether he can take
UNP to its former glory. So,stick to the point without jumping from branch to branch like a monkey Mr.all knowing Portugese!Cross over is an old habit and toppling the govt by winning its members to the opposition when general election was around the corner was also in fashion. No need to go deep into that. But there’s a strong need to find a way to keep the opposition members intact by all means and especially
in the midst of defeats after defaeats in all elections. But what’s seen
happening is,efforts after efforts to chase away dissenting voices and
consolidate leader’s authority to stay unbowed. So my question is,why not use the same energy against MR regime?Seeing a stronger one,you run away and down the hill, chase away! And you got thousands of analysis to justify this?Who are the next-in-line leaders of UNP?Why Ranil is so scared of one?

Simply put this whywhy is a ball sucker of Sajith or MARA. No amount of explanations would make him understand the truth. When he is cornered he resorts to filthy language and attacks! This is exactly how Sajith and MARA operate. Just read my comment at August 1, 2012 5:18 pm. It has provided explanations to your incessant moanings, complaints and diatribes.

Look Silva,if you want me to answer your questions you first make sure
you follow some decency in addressing the participants of this forum.
You have no shame that you are lying like a pro.Go back to your comments and see who has screamed at others in filth from the start.Go look at yourself in the mirror.Gamini went to the extent of reminding you to be mindful of your tongue.A decent expectation.Did that make any sense to you?Everything you said about me must be reversed to you.
Now, before you get answer from me to your questions, you called me an
ignorant, stupid, silly brainless, filthy why-why…..?What makes you think such a creature can answer your BRAINY questions?Go man go get your next pkt of kick! And finally, you got some good points for disclosing that Sajith got BALLS and not your man!

whywhy, I don’t know who you are, sorry, nothing personal. But the problems we face have become personal. And when you come along and become part of the problem, aggravate, complicate, misguide and give a wrong definition to the problem you unlock the Pandora’s Box! Yes, I accept no one wants to be called like I did. I am sorry about that and I withdraw such attributes and qualifiers thrown at you. However let me make it very clear that I have not removed the trousers of Sajith or Ranil to see and enjoy their balls as you have done! I am not that type of person. In fact I don’t like these politicians or politics. In Sri Lanka politics is the most inefficient, wasteful, corrupt and deceptive business. There are only a handful of decent politicians in the country today which is why I support Ranil. So if you tell us it is balls-you say you have seen Sajith’s BIIIG BALLS-then there is cause for disagreement. I say it is not BAAALLS that matter but the brain and the decency, honesty and integrity, straightforwardness and simplicity, and above all being a normal human being like us, all of which good qualities can be attributed to Ranil. Ranil is not my father or relative or neighbor or friend. He even does not know me exist! I write in support of him because of his qualities I mentioned and his professionalism as a politician. You see, almost all the things people do to live, to survive come under a certain profession: the doctor, the carpenter, the mechanic, the mason etc. All of them shed their sweat, contribute their time thought and energy towards their profession and earn a suitable wage for their pain. Now, consider the politicians, the beggars, the stock market manipulators, the gamblers, the bookies, the narcotic dealers etc. What contribution do they make to the society they live in? Except beggars how much do they steal, rob and plunder from the country and the society? Think of the whole scenario of adulterated fuel imports, Z-score and whole education system bungling, the hedging deal, enormous debt burden of the country etc. If you are not a MARA acolyte then you are definitely a Sajith’s man which brings us to a very hilarious encounter. Huh .. Sajith! Very good topic. I am trying my best to keep shut the lid of that Pandora’s Box! He is the most perverted, crooked, dualistic, retrogressive, violent, stupid!!!, unintelligent, indecent, contradictory, arrogant, empty, conceited, cheap, immature, childish, messy, bungling, destructive, iconoclastic, unprincipled, coarse, ungrateful, conspiratorial, power hungry and greedy, blind, misleading and mislead, weak, manipulable and lost political loiterer I have ever seen. These and many more attributes like these could be used to qualify Sajith! When his father was the president he used to plunder ancient treasures by digging temples etc. like the Namal baby is doing today! What is he actually doing for winning the party? Nothing! What is he actually doing to sabotage the party and its activities? Everything! Do you think bribing temples Rs. 50,000/- is a political strategy? No way! It amounts to bribing in the way as Araliya Dansala at Temple Trees! And where does this money come from? Who is behind the supply? You must explain this! Where does he get this money from? And what have these (sorry pal, you can’t walk in the paddy field mud wearing shoes!) stupid monks contributed to the society for the alms they eat from the poor people? Nothing except systematically invented set of lies, superstition and false hopes! Have you ever read a serious book on Buddhism? I am sure you never did. Why does a layman become a monk? Why do these greedy and stupid monks accept bribes from this bribe-monger? Has Buddha advocated so and if so where, in what Buddhist scripture has it been commanded? This Rs. 50,000/- religious bribe is the most hyped and the only and the lonely and the sole political strategy and master plan of Sajith to announce that he is the real and BALLED leader of UNP! Yet apart from the 60 second media clip of Sirasa which is another fake and a menace and a mind pollutant in the country, has a single monk said anything which would add momentum or value to UNP, its march towards gaining popularity and power in the country after accepting religious bribe from Sajith? No! Nothing! If they did say something it was something that caused more division, puncture, strife, conflict and antagonism in the party! So these religious donkeys, sorry!, are causing more and more harm to the party after tasting bribes from Sajith the bribe-monger! So what is the turnover of the UNP’s political balance sheet when the contribution of Sajth is put into equation? It is always negative, a liability rather than an asset, a political hurdle to overcome, a self-destructive and contradictory factor, a germ that cause political gangrene inside the party! So whywhy, this horrendous character inside the party can be written about endlessly because he has done untold damage to the party. This much of Sajith’s bullshit maybe suffice for now. I hope you will, if you are not paid by someone to write the things you must think and rethink about the points raised by me and choose the correct political stance. I don’t get a penny for the time and thought I spend in writing these things wasting my time. I do this purely because this country has to be saved from Rajapakshas, his family, their lackeys and goons and also from Sajith, Dayasiri, Shiral, Maithree and other conspirators. We have lived our lives and come to the last stage of it. But we have a duty to redeem this country for our posterity. If you have children you will understand what I say. Besides no one wants to be in the swamp that we are living in today! See the truth, live the truth, die the truth! Not kill the truth because it is not possible although MR and Sajith are trying!

I appreciate your sense of responsibility and extend my hands to you Silva and I’m sorry too of my reaction towards you which is not my style at all.Well, back to business, this “BALL” business is
not my invention,it’s yours and it came from your vocabulary. You
served me and I simply returned your service with well balanced speed.Take time to read between lines, you’ll grasp the essence.I meant BALLS=COURAGE and not the way you got it.Ok,now the next point is,your haste to jump to conclusions prematuredly about my
stand among Rani vs Sajith vs Mara.Yes,I made it clear I’m not for Ranil. But does that mean I’m with Sajith or Mara?Or even SF or JVP? I’m in the same boat you are in, if what you say is what you are!Take a clue from my starting post where I raise doubts about the strength of 70+ that include Karu as well.Karu is in Sajith group!I’m saying Mara will win,not because I want it but when Ranil fails, tht’s the outcome. Please remember,I’m not in anybody’s camp.I have friends and relatives in everybody’s camp but I never made any personal visit to them.
I happily agree with most of what you say except the kind of BALL business you are messing around with and straying from the focul point of the subject. If your memory can go back to Dudley era you can not forget that Dudley was too weak in the face of aggressive left and JRJ thought Dudley’s method will not work in their favour. So he got tough towards increasingly becoming hooliganism of the left and called upon Dudley to respond or give him power to respond! The rest is history. You yourself agree that this govt is the most inhumane on all levels in short. Then don’t you foresee that we need a JRJ to deal with them?I understand the difference of circumstances between then and now and know the situ is more powerful against Ranil now partly due to the power accumulated in the executive.UPFA was in the same boat 18yrs back.According to your own assessment of UPFA govt,Ranil has more than enough ammunition to convince the people to fire at the govt
but that’s not happeninig,I believe, in my opinion that his election losses in the past, speaks against him.Continuous defeats will only assure more defeats.UNP has to arrest this situation and tell me this should happen or not?Look at what Mara did within one year of returning to second term.18th amendment for a third term.So sure of another term! How come? They know UNP won’t change and unless that happens UNP can not win is, the mantra. Ranil must make a break through.Nothing personal Silva.Thanks.
