Ranil To Rescue SriLankan Airlines

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe today announced that the government has decided to absorb the SriLankan Airlines debts amounting to a staggering US$ 3.2 billion, in a last ditch attempt to ‘save’ the country’s national carrier.

Ranil WIn an effort to save the carrier from further losses, Wickremesinghe has also ordered the airline to immediately cancel the order of four A350 aircrafts.

Wickremesinghe also said that the government was looking to partner SriLankan with a foreign airline, similar to the deal struck between SriLankan and Emirates, during former President Chandrika Kumaratunga’s period, in an effort to convert the airline into a profit making venture. The Cabinet has already given Wickremesinghe’s proposal the greenlight.

The decision to absorb the national carrier’s debts comes when the government itself is already saddled with its own debts. In March, Wickremesinghe revealed in Parliament that his government was trapped in an almost Rs. 10 trillion debt, mainly left by the previous administration.

SriLankan which recorded a profit of Rs. 4.4 billion in 2008, took an appalling nosedive having suffered a whopping loss amounting to Rs. 107 billion, when the airline’s administration was under Nishantha Wickramasinghe, the brother-in-law of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

that culprit nishantha from the bulldog family which gold digger shiranthi also comes from must be sent behind bars and his civic rights cancelled. The guy who appointed him MaRa passa and who ever the civil aviation minister must also face the same fate for plundering the country’s wealth. There are still morons in srilanka who dont understand this reality but still play into the hands of these racist bastards.

Why cant Nishantha be accountable for if not all some of the billions that lost ? Their properties should be taken to the state by force. In Germany this is in action. If anyone would not be able to do the job within the legal guidelines – being documented as to why the carrier disspaeared this much of billions, Nishanth has to take the responsiblity.
I wonder why the president of the country, travelled to Rome with a loads of his men in board knowing allthe way along, that the airline made only losses.
Please journos disturb him and ask the bits so that general public could get the bits clearly.
I wonder why JVP is not active in this regard.
Why they dont talk about the longer silence of Journos on the grave issues from the former Minsiter of Finance, Mahinda Jarapakshe.
Mhin air should be sold out and the sums should be taken to state to cover the bills long standing.

Agree with you. The stage is set for Colombo Telegraph to annoy the hell out of that scoundrel Nishantha. Not even a 10th pass bully made the chairman of a national carrier. Happens only in Srilanka and under Rajapassa rule

“…the government has decided to absorb the SriLankan Airlines debts amounting to a staggering US$ 3.2 billion..”

Ranil is not just rescuing the Sri Lankan air lines mismanaged by Mahinda and his family

Ranil is also rescuing the Mahinda dynasty that plundered the country’s wealth

Mahinda, MY3 et el are all in the game

One single question to Former President:

Even if the gravity of the losses were known to him by mid of 2014, why he continued to abuse Srilanken for his entourages ?
There he made the wound even festated by his indifference.
Why cant any brave Journos to raise the single question to hiim and his Playboy brother in law ? THese both should be hung by their balls today, being unable to bear the sums that the poor folks of the nation are loaded.
Deyyane,… even today, the bugger is on a tour, with the collected sums during that darkest era of the country… but his extrement decaying worms the supporters still hold him as god…. ?

      Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe

RE: Ranil To Rescue SriLankan Airlines

“debts amounting to a staggering US$ 3.2 billion, in a last ditch attempt to ‘save’ the country’s national carrier.”

      US $320 Million/year = Rs. 320 x140 million/yr = Rs.44.800/yr or Rs 44 Billion/yr

=Rs,2,240/ Citizen or Rs. 8,960/year for a Family of 4. or 3% per Family with incomes of RS. 25,000/yr.

Part of the deal should be to investigate the culprits and their assets.

Prasanna – I feel the same way you feel about the loot in Sri Lankan
airlines and as you said there are still morons in Sri Lanka who don’t
understand the reality of such a crime of looting public money and Flag
carrier of the country burdened with heavy debts of 3.4 billion dollars
which amount could nave been used to start a few people’s projects. They should not be put behind bars but behind barbed wire fence in open
air and torched under the hot sun.

We should console ourselves by saying ” Katatha Kiyandatha” “whom to tell” & “Yaarukku solluhrathu” in all three languages as even the govt
is not bothered to punish the looters and try means to recover the loot
At last, PM Ranil W.now realised that waste in millions of Dollars on a daily basis should be stopped and he has just got the approval from the cabinet, after being more than one year in power, to look for a similar deal that we had with Emirates with another airline. He should ensure that we are not taken for a ride by getting money greedy local
‘experts’ to take part in the discussions. Try and Get to Emirates, failing select an middle east airline, preferably Qatar Airways, with financial backing. Western airlines are good but their overheads are high and naturally we will pay high costs, specially salaries for operating and cabin crew.

One humble plea to PM Ranil is to put the pride aside and start with
a regional airline operating into profitable destinations in India,
Middle East and Far East using the same fleet preferable with narrow bodied aircraft with increased frequencies with no night stops outside the country. Once the airline is on a good footing with profits coming in, then we could think of international operations.

Ranil has to make a few important decisions immediately.

1What do you do with the debt and losses in the accounts?
2How do you repay the loans of USD 3.25 billion?
3How much equity are you willing to sell and at what price ?
4Do you break up Sri Lankan into 4-5 companies including ground handling , maintenance etc?
5What do you do with excess staff ?
6What do you do with new air bus order including 4 A 350s not yet cancelled?
7How do you give comfort to a new partner that they will not get kicked out again?
8How do you pull out subsidies given to the airline?
9Do you close MIHIN or amalgamate?
10What do you do with buddies on the board?

All these decisions have to be made before getting a JV partner.

RW cannot save Sri Lankan Airlines either. The mother of all corruption, criminality & nepotism.

Just take a look at the current board and management team appointed under “Yahapalanya”. You will realize why. It is an unbelievable pack of cronies.

Under which corporate governance principles was Suren Ratwatte chosen to be the CEO? His bro in the grey zone, smooth operator Charitha Ratwatte’s aviation business expertise?

WHY AREN’T NISHANTHA W & KAPILA C BEHIND BARS? AFTER SUCH MASSIVE CRIMINALITY AGAINST SRI LANKA.

Why do we allow these people to play these games with Sri Lanka’s time treasure?

It is no right to put all in the same bin.

Why not he can save Srilanken airlines ?

If Swiss joins Airberlin or the others – if Etihard joins Airberlin, whynot srilanken joins with any ME or EU becoming partners.

Thatway only even Meeharaka led admijstraiton revenged on that, is the only wayout to save lanken debts.

        1

        Saibu Jayathilaka,

Of course he cannot save it. At best he will put a nice plaster on it and cover up the stinking wound Sri Lankan Airlines is.

Nevertheless it will smell awful. You better cover your nose.

Your taxes are being used to pay extravagant bills accumulated by corrupt Sri Lankan Airline’s Boards & Management. Past and present. What on earth have these incompetent monkeys being doing for more than a year now?

Apart from a vague statement via PM that they are looking for a partner. They have said or done nothing so far. WOW! What business wizards. Any idiot can pull off this kind crap. These cronies are just enjoying their appointments and perks that come along with such positions. Nothing else.

As a citizen I have a couple of questions:
        1. Where is the plan to restructure Sri Lankan Airlines? I don’t think these new politically appointed Cronies and Henchmen in Sri Lankan Airline’s Board & Management have the competence or the enthusiasm to develop one.

        2. What happened to the report on massive mismanagement of Sri Lankan Airline by Rajapassa appointed criminal cronies?

It is all hushed up or kicked further down the road. Is this what we expected.

WHY ON EARTH IS THE PM PROTECTING RAJAPASSA ERA CRIMINAL CRONIES WHO RAN A CRITICAL NATIONAL ASSET TO THE GROUND? WHY? WE NEED ANSWERS.

No Sri Lankan citizen should tolerate this.

        Cheers!

        PS:
Among many eyebrow raising appointments in the Sri Lankan Airline’s board, I find an infamous crony called Harindra Balapatabendi. His Dad Kusumsiri was a central player during CBK’s rule over SL. Then ran away to Australia with assets acquired via questionable means.

All these corrupt cronies have now returned to plum positions in SL. On the back of January 8th revolution lead by Sobitha Thero.

For these Cronies & Henchmen that bloodless revolution is nothing valuable. They just use the opportunity to conduct business as usual.

        We must cut them off.

          I can feel your pain.

The fortunes of Sri Lankan airline can be turned around only if RW and MS seriously consider ending corruption and nepotism.

Well you know what happens when business illiterates are appointed to run a branded company just because they are party men, relatives, minister’s mistress or her siblings, members of the old school boy network, …

Why don’t you take up this challenge and run the company for the next five years?

We will be right behind you.

Ranil is not a savior either, he promised to increase the government employees’ salary to win the election. He still increased the salary after seeing the current financial situation of the country. No matter who wins the election, only fools continue to run the country in South Asia, because the West is too good and got all the talented South Asians. Even few us return to do something good, but the fools don’t see our skills and talents. That is why I call South Asia “A white man’s playground.”

As usual RW is again talking rubbish. He appointed an incompetent Board and a similar type of CEO. If he had the slightest urgency of salvaging the airline he wouldn’t have appointed such an incompetent board and a CEO. Now he says he is going to introduce a similar deal like Emirates but this same RW tried to cancel the deal when he was the PM for a short time. He has the guts to say that Emirates showed profits but this stupid PM is unaware that profit were shown by manipulating accounts and by selling movable and immovable property of the airline.

Like others commented Nishantha and former CEO Kapila should take all the responsibilities. But sadness is newly appointed top management also behave like unprofessionals in this drama. There are lots of unnecessary new appointments such as Chief finance officer which take millions of monthly salary. And another suggestion. If the company can allocate turn around roasters for safety instructors it will save millions of dollars. They just getting layover flights to only check cabin crew’s safety knowledge which they can do in turn around flights. There are plenty of unnecessary positions all around the company, specially in HR. If the top management can allocate them in to other departments which runs with short of staff company can do lots of miracles.

I do not understand the urgency to save this failing airline, riddled with irreparable corruption, unless for the sake of prestige, which is dragging the poor taxpayer into a bottomless pit of debt that would take generations to service, let alone repay.

I am not a fan of the UNP nor RW because of their past history of unleashing unparalleled violence on innocent Tamils and also on innocent Sinhalese and torture camps etc. But I also like to be a bit naive and think people can reform.

So give this regime a chance. The National Airline is hemorrhaging money worse than a ritualistically slaughtered cow. No joke. So what is to be done? Is it even worth having a national airline flying and losing money on long distance routes?

Why not a regional efficient smaller airline? A lot of people blasted CBK for the Emirates partnership but it helped did it not? When the previous regime ran this airline like a village buth kadey it ran up losses because the leaders and their cronies did not care that they were stealing the people’s money. A tenth grade clown poor tea estate superintendent was made Chairman to keep the GodKing’s wife happy. The GodKing knew what he was upto but had to keep the wife happy. That is a fact. They started a hiring frenzy; they had air hostesses seconded for servicing the GodPrince. They really ran the nation like Gadaffi or Mugabe or Marcos.

Give Ranil a break. Give Eran W a break; Give the new CEO a break; They are trying to make sense out of this Albatross hanging around the nation’s neck and still trying to retain a little bit of the pride left in having a national airline however poorly run it was under the GodKing.

On whose advise is Ranil deciding to bail out Srilankan Airlines? How can this happen without proper accountability for the past mismanagement. Don’t he realise it is public funds that will be used for this bailing out? This is not the first time this messy national carrier had been saved. As long as this practice goes on there will be another set of rouges in the future who will have no hesitancy to rob again.

    • 4
      1

Agreed. Ranil is burdened with so many problems he has resorted to a
line of least resistance – in taking over the outstanding loss, without
conditions? The Accountability part must be incorporated as Public
      money was involved.

All that is fine but how about holding the man who dug this hole, accountable? By letting these rascals get away, we are only encouraging others to do the same. Accountability seems rare in our country.

Ranil as no one can deny you are Mr.Clean the nation is looking forward to you to lead the Nation to be the “Miracle of Asia”.

Remember you have sinhala warlord factions- MR1, MR2 Ranil CBK each with 2500 army/police mercenaries. Ten the MP’s with around 50 each.

Manel: You asked.. “how about holding the man who dug this hole accountable?” Do you honestly believe this RW will do that? NO. How can he do that? He has “pawned” himself to the entire family of MR. You know who drove RW to the Temple Trees in the early hours of 9th January 2015? He was the husband of Nirupama Rajapakse, Ravi Nadesan whose name has come up in the purchase of aircraft and made a fortune of Rs.3 billion. Who would have shared this loot. That is why Waliamuna Report is collecting dust in his, RW’s drawer.

This RW having offered the SriLankan to Rajapakse for Rs. 1.00 now calling for “Investors”. So it must be an “Investment” less than Rs. 1.00, because MR did not offer to buy it even at that price. This is another “gimmick” adopted. First condemn the whole outfit and show it is “worthless”. Then sell it for “nothing”, even a Rs. 1.00 is substantial. In the alternative call for “investors”. Those “investors” will come on their own terms “dictated” by themselves and compelled to be accepted. Those “investors” would be none other than his own “elite rouges”. This is another “CIRCUS”. Watch out.

Which is the collateral property this time? Sirikotha Mandiraya? I guess that is the one left now! Anybody have any other idea to pledge to this loan?

Is this $3.2B including the Mihin’s proud achievements or that is separate and another day we planning to put Kotte Parliament on auction for that loan?

Whether the Prime Minister writes it off or not is secondary. A debt is a debt, and will incur interest payments, either way.

So, writing it off, in a sense, gives the Airline a fresh start.

Let us, prioritize what needs to be done to avoid a repeat of losses.

We should start from the very top.

    * Higher a Chairman from outside. A person with a proven record in profit making for a successful airline.
    * Give the Chairman a benefit package, linked to efficiency. Say, a percentage of the profit the airline makes.
    * Let the Chairman be in charge of every decision, from hiring to firing (of course, with him/her reporting to an authorized body of the public, every new move he plans to implement).
    * Set a time frame within which he should start showing profit.
    * Let him make public a bi-annual report of the progress the airline is making.

Can Jagath Fernando opine on this decision ?

My view, this’resetting’ of UL’s finances is a welcome mat for a Managing Carrier. Perhaps the ask of an incoming carrier to clear the balance sheet before an investment decision is made.

On the other hand, now, the carrier can go on it’s own too.

Best Wishes to UL and it’s employees.

Leaving aside the cheap politics as it’s non value added, Sri Lankan airlines need a complete attitude transformation with a high performing, continuously improving and innovative culture.

This is not the first company in the world history to go on a huge debt and it won’t be the last.
Important thing to understand here is that the only way out of this is, through an attitude in every single person accountable, from the janitor to the CEO and Mr. Wickramasigha himself.

What has happened in the past is irrelevant, and only the learnt lessons are important. I wouldn’t personally agree with cancelling the A350 orders. These aircraft are the most efficient in the world. With a realistic 5-10 year plan, these will be the assets off the Air line and the country to overcome this economic depression.

Sri Lankan needs innovative young blood in to the business combined with the experience of all existing employees.

I highly doubt that there are any short-cuts to overcome the debts.

Pls feel free dislike if you don’t agree and like if you agree.

Give Ranil a break. Give Eran W a break; Give the new CEO a break; They are trying to make sense out of this Albatross hanging around the nation’s neck and still trying to retain a little bit of the pride left in having a national airline however poorly run it was under the GodKing, This is a terrible loss of scarce resources. What options do they have? Thousands will lose jobs if the Airline is disbanded. If it declares bankruptcy perhaps there is some chance. All the wasteful routes to destinations in Europe/Vanity routes need to stop. Focus on regional airports and profitable routes to Chennai etc.,

Lest we forget, thanks to Ranil’s last regime Sri Lankan Airlines was made a successful, popular and profitable airline due to the expertise of an able airline man – Peter Hill. But Mahinda Rajapakse, in his now well known pettiness, destroyed this efficient State venture because CEO Hill was unwilling to off-load 1st class business passengers who had pre-paid and pre-booked their tickets. This is one of the qualities of a man who came to power claiming he was a Buddhist Sinhala patriot. The man still hopes to hoodwink the masses in his much hoped for comeback. The country remembers how Mahinda R ruined this airline bringing in his BiL, with absolutely no airline experience at all. No wonder the airline is in the doldrums – thanks to the man whom the airline staff call naaki ilandhariya (dandy over-sexed old codger)

Is there no way to bring charges against MR for ruining a once
      flourishing airline?

That was CBK not RW who did the EK deal with Chandana De Silva. Get your Tamil Eelam racist FACTS straight comrade.

Irrespective of whether it was Ranil or CBK who gave life to the Airline it was MR who destroyed it – with surreptitious plans of building MihinAir under his name and to make a mega-fortune out of it. Get the point – he destroyed the nation’s only painfully built national airline to satisfy his and his family’s private greed!!! He chose the failed businessman and jail bird Sajin V for the initial laying of the wicket for Rajapakses sinister plans. But the crooked Vaas had his own priorities which produced undeclared assets in Singapore, Dubai, London, Sri Lanka and where else!!! How come super Sinhala Buddhist patriots like you are tongue-tied to this blatant emptying of the motherland’s meagre resources.

If Tamil history, ancient/recent, is Eelam racist facts to you keep wallowing in your own excrement, Lover.

Bailing it financially is not enough….get rid of the people at SLA who also sucked up to the previous lot (hustlers)

SLA still has as employees a few “stooges” of the past moguls who helped them enormously. From the marketing dept to HR to Flight operations to the cabin crew management. They all supplied to this downfall and now lining up to the new regime to suck-up again and thrive.

Specific crews (concubines) were detailed on holiday flights with the bigwigs by the relevant departments and those people who sanctioned it are still in those departments trying to evade accusations. The marketing people were having their own joy rides at the expense of the airline and fancy parties with the then hierarchy of SLA with cocktails to galore. Again suppliers of a “good time” to the Niashanthas etc.

Employment was doled out to many unwanted but helpful to the then chairman and politicians and dwindled the product that is Srilankan airlines. Now the service is abysmal accept from a few senior crew who still love the airline.

Please dear sir Ranil…..get rid of these hustlers too… otherwise they will ruin it again and start providing only the concubines

Who are we trying to fool ? one does not need to be an Airline expert or a Financial wizard to understand the dire situation SriLankan is in and it does not help in trying to put much of the blame (though rightly)to the previous regime.

Though some has been trying to paint RW as the possible savior of the Airline, his actions since becoming PM tells another story. Can he justify appointment of a Board full of his cronies who have totally been incapable of making any significant contribution. How would he justify the appointment of a CEO who does not posses the requisite qualifications to hold such position ? How does he justify the appointment of a CCO who was not the choice of the Board ? What good is his so called title Mr.Clean when he indirectly turns a blind eye when his cronies engage in corruption.

Now he seeks a Foreign Partner to save the sinking ship.Does he realize any partner that wants to get involved would want the Management control which would allow them to take any/all major decisions affecting the Business like Emirates did.

Wasn’t this what CEO of Qatar wanted(all debts to be taken over by the Government) so in the event they want to come in they will have a clean slate to do whatever they want with the Airline.

whatever it is we can expect turbulent skies over the next few months

Ranil is not a savior either, he promised to increase the government employees’ salary to win the election. He still increased the salary after seeing the current financial situation of the country. No matter who wins the election, only fools continue to run the countries in South Asia, because the West is too good and got all the talented South Asians. Few of us return to do something good, but the fools don’t see our skills and talents. That is why I call South Asia “A white man’s playground.”

If the government expects a foreign airline to pay and buy a 40% stake of Sri Lankan Airlines, without safeguarding the rights of the investor, this is unlikely to succeed. Here are some safeguards that are required to attract a good investor.

    a. The investment must carry a World Bank MIGA guarantee.
    b. The government shareholding must not exceed the 40% offered to the investor
    c. Balance investment must be held by an independent investor such as IFC.
    d. The government must guarantee that it will not interfere with the rights of the Board of Directors to invite suitable people to join the Board of Directors and not to interfere with the management appointments.
    e. If shares are offered to the public, government owned business undertakings or provident funds should be prevented from buying any shares. This is to prevent a repetition of the fate of the major banks operating as public limited companies, where the ruling government uses it’s major shareholding acquired through five or six government organisations to appoint their nominees as Directors.

GOOD GOVERNANCE COMPARABLE TO SINGAPORE IS A NECCESSITY FOR A PROSPEROUS FUTURE.

That airline is good for nothing. Saving the airline is only UNP to collect some votes. Leaving it to die will clear the government balance sheet and will let the government credit rating improve. You want loan from IMF like organization with cheap interest without pledging Colombo harbor or Hambantota, you need to move your administration styles to capitalistic market.

If the labour of lankawe is not suitable for airline business, then that service or product has be imported. Government has to allow other Airlines to cater. Without proper labour, the Managers, the pilots, the marketers and contracting that kind of labor from outside is not possible. This trade is not something where you bring in some parts and open up an assembly plant. This is something about delivering service on the spot, competing with international players. If the government close it down or spin it off without conditions as it is, governments will be able to borrow for real development projects, not the Chinese white elephants. If they attempt to guarantee the jobs to collect some votes, if they undertake the coverup of the past loss, their interest rate will go up and they cannot improve or develop the industries in which they are good at it.

Putting some money on the plantation side will improve the foreign exchange problems. Airline Industry is very aggressively competed and dynamically evolving global market. Taming it and management it is highly skilled and expertised job. It is pointless bringing international managers and expect them run a company, leave the profit here and walk home empty. You can think of so many rules to impose before you contract out the airline for foreign managers. But the capital market does not work like that. What foreign managers are going to do is demand high salary and rescind any responsibilities. This is not the 13A for Tamils. Tamils have to take whatever bone Appe Aandu give or have to jump into Bay of Bengal.

Other drag on this is the failure of investigating the failure of the airline. This is going to create a natural suspicions on the mind of international managers. This kind of saving the criminals going to scare them to come to the country and sign contracts with labour unions, subsidiary contractors and others.. Why would somebody want to come with out priority for their safety, their salary, their profit…. Not all in the world are another Mahendran, greedy of money, no feeling of safety or shame!
