Ranil Wins The Day, JO Consolidates, Maithri Slips Even Further, Govt Loses 2/3rds Majority

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe comfortably survived the vote of no-confidence brought against him by the Joint Opposition (JO) a short while ago. A total of 78 MPs supported the motion while 122 voted against it. Twenty six MPs were not present at the time the vote was taken.

Although both the JO and the UNP had claimed that victory was assured for the respective positions they took, uncertainty prevailed throughout the day after the debate on the motion commenced at 10 this morning.

Senior SLFPer and State Minister A.H.M. Fowzie dropped a bombshell claiming that the party had decided to vote against the motion. However, State Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena refuted Fowzie, insisting that the party had decided to support the motion consequent to a meeting held at the residence of Minister Mahinda Amaraweera.

The Tamil National Alliance, whose position was unclear since it was reported that the constituent parties would decide separately how to vote, finally opted to vote against the motion.

At various points during the afternoon, SLFP MPs who were not with the Joint Opposition pledged to vote for the motion, notably S.B. Dissanayake, Dayasiri Jayasekera and Susantha Punchinilame. Meanwhile one of the first to moot a no confidence motion against Wickremesinghe, Palitha Range Bandara of the UNP, declared that he would vote against it. Wijedasa Rajapaksha (another UNPer who has made negative comments on the party leadership) voted against the motion while UNP National List MP Rev Athureliye Rathana Thero absented himself at the time the vote was taken. The JVP, one of the most vocal supporters of the Yahapalana project, finally broke ranks by voting with the JO.

The result considerably enhances the parliamentary strength of the Joint Opposition while weakening further President Sirisena’s hold on the SLFP.

The overall implications of the result on the political arrangement in the country is yet unclear. However, Rajitha Senaratne who has backed Wickremesinghe has stated that the UNP will form a ‘a new unity government on Monday with support from the SLFP and other parties’.

Whether the SLFP will back a UNP-led Government is unclear at the moment. The TNA, which has 16 MPs has not indicated that it would be part of such a government. As such it is likely that Wickremesinghe would have to form a minority government whose stability will depend on the TNA continuing to use parliamentary numbers to protect the UNP from moves such as this no confidence motion.

In any event, the government has lost the two-thirds majority it enjoyed when the SLFP and UNP came together to form the first ‘unity government’ in the country’s history.

Rajapakahe evil men wanted to block everything. THey thought they are given more powers by local electoins.
Since that day on the buggers are to sabotage current govt s steps.
Truths will succeed for sure, that has taught them a lesson.
Wait and see, how they also pass that bill for next courts in the parliament soon.

“The JVP, one of the most vocal supporters of the Yahapalana project, finally broke ranks by voting with the JO.”

The JVP which has been sitting on the fence for a while has now joined the crooks, war criminals, racists, …………… once again.

JVP are right to support NCM against the PM as his name linked with bond scam.

So voting along the crooks, war criminals, racists,……………. for imaginary joint opposition’s unnecessary time wasting speculative motions in the interest of the crooked clan is something that JVP could have avoided by abstaining from voting.

By the way just because PM’s name is linked to the bond scam by commission and omission would it make him guilty?

Tell us how the scam was successfully organised, by whom and the total loss to this country.

The JO will be back with a new attack soon Ranil and the UNP are taking things too easy! Time to expedite all the cases against the Rajapaksa Criminal Network. Keep the promise you gave the people at the 2015 Elections. The attacks against the Muslims should be a wake up call to the nation. If the government fails to prosecute the Rajapaksas Criminal and hand them over to the Hage for international trial we might slip down a path of international intervention and end up like Afghanistan or Suriya…

This Government needs to make some bold moves to show a sign of strength. Time to strengthen the rule of law. Move ahead with all the pending cases the way you moved on the no confidence motion against Ranil.

Yeah, utter waste of people’s money on politicians.
Another Parliament joke is over. I believe this is the last double game of our politicians.
Now that the NCM is defeated with a section of SLFP abstaining, there is no need for UNF to form a new government. Ranil can continue the Unity Government.
I have a request. I didn’t support the NCM so I believe I have a legitimate right to do that. I urge the Prime Minister to “not to abolish the Executive President”, “not to introduce the Federal Constitution” and “not to continue the Mixed Electoral System.”
I still can’t believe President signing the NCM. Although Wimal was in the frontline, he can’t get President signature. Was there any ulterior motive to do that or was it Basil’s plan. In any case, those SLFPers who supported the NCM are in any case turncoats. It is highly likely they sit in the Opposition. JVP is no longer with the Yahaplanaya government or are they? I am not sure. JO is betrayed and misled again by Maithree/SLFP the same way it happened in August 2015. History repeats. JO never learn. And that is a fact.

My above comment may have written by going by what politicians want us to believe. Now the dust is settled, I get the big picture.

This is exactly not what it was. JO is not innocent. They wanted Ranil to resign and then abolish the Executive Presidency. Ranil didn’t resign so the game changed. They played a double game. Maithree’s “betrayal” protected Executive Presidency.

I suspected, I came to know

      NCM will be defeated.

Can a NCM be brought against Sirisena? After all most the SLFP are with the JO and in the Opposition.

Will Sirisena issue more Gazette notifications,?

At least now show some bloody courage Ranil and force the clown in the presidency to give the ministry of law and order to Sarath Fonseka to catch the crooks.

If not even the little time left will be wasted with your namby-pamby wishy-washy crap. For once, be resolute in your frigging life man and read the riot act to Sirisena ………how more badly do you want the born backstabber to let you down before you act?

People will respect you as a politician if you show one act of courage in your entire bloody life ………. Is that too much to ask?

Man, when I watched you talk now after your win ………. I just wanted to grab you by the neck and shake your head till your frigging teeth fall ……… because I know you are going back to your gutless namby-pamby committee crap and nothing is going to change.

The crime is not for you, you are well-off, but for the people who trusted you ……… cause you are going to waste the one chance they had to do something about corruption.

Great piece by Nimal who supported Ranil during these lean times. I can only echo what Nimal says by asking Ranil to shed his namby pamby ways and seize the initiative.

Put Sirisena on the back foot and certainly bring Sarath Fonseka in as the law and order minister. This country is crying out for firm action in the right direction. Seize the moment.

As long as Mahinda (the crminal garbage that was hurled at the population by Chandrika as the choice of the next leader) still alive, he wont let anyone have a peaceful time. This one garbage of a family, the Rajapakses, are so unsuitable for governance, they display this incapability always through their conducts and die hard habits of being racists on all occassions. Stealing is their number one forte and the racism is a cloak they conveniently use to hide their true nature and the Buddhist religious system has given them the full freedom therefore to do what they like on the basis of these guys being racists. Gunadasa Amarasekera, a racist writer and an famous advocate for the Sinhala majoritarian racism imposed on the minorities, said on one occassion that if Rajapakse family are thieves, let them be and its not a problem for the country as a whole. The reason he sites is the “WAR VICTORY” against the Tamils. If he can kill Tamils then let him steal from the government and the people…. he is our Hero. Such is the level that this fascist system (SL Govt)has fallen to.

Mahinda Rajapakse who lead the NCM should leave politics. He lost Presidential election, parliamentary election and now this NCM. He lost in all because of his anti Tamil and anti Muslim hatred propaganda and the violence he sponsored against Tamils and Muslims. He should learn that most of the Sinhalese understood that he is misusing them to become power again to rob the nation. It is because of Mahinda’s action, the whole nation and all Sinhalese get a bad image in the international level. It is time the rule of law to take immediate legal action against the crimes committed by Mahinda & Co.

        Ajith,

You forgot that Mahinda won a resounding victory just couple of months back. Besides, why do you expect Mahinda to retire when he lost just a Presidential election, parliamentary election and NCM. Our PM has lost more than 30 elections currently and is about to lose big time again in the next upcoming elections.

It is because of Mahinda’s action that we can live peacefully without a fear of terrorism. I think we as a nation should bear the consequences for that without complaints.

The legal action against Mahinda is being taken for 3 years now. Still no results. Do you think Ranil W needs another 5 year term to do just that?

        • 2
          0

          Shenal,
First of all you should understand the differences between Presidential, Parliamentary and Local govt elections. The presidential election is the elect the most powerful position which he lost. He has to wait for another two years to contest that election. Unfortunately he can’t contest that election even though he tried to change that with 18th amendment. It shows his greediness. Yes, Ranil lost elections and he should go. You are a fool if you think Mahinda who defeated LTTE. Mahinda was not in this country when the war was ended. Muslim community faced the terror under Rajapakse regime and he is behind the recent terror attack on Muslims. Yes, there is a failure in part of Ranil to bring Mahinda into the bar for his crimes.

That’s the only way Ranil would become the president! Its time to bring in a retirement age for politicians! The oldies should go home! Its time for new leadership with those who are interested in the well-being of the country! Like in any other employment conditions we should have a retirement age for the politicians say 65 as all employers wont employ you after you are 60!

As expected. No way RW would have lost the NCM unless it was a one-by-one secret ballot. The SLFP members who voted for the NCM should resign. Now the ball is in RWs court. Lets see if he does the right thing and resigns from the UNP leadership had handover the party to a newer, younger group. I have no issue with RW remaining as the PM until 2020. The critical factor in 2020 is the presidency. The new tax bill is going to hurt a lot of especially middle-class families. The direct taxation is going to go up significantly. The idea is to reduce indirect taxes while increasing the direct taxes, BUT BUT, If the cost of living does not go down proportionately the UNP will go extict by 2020. Everyone including the some of the monorities will turn on them. This is probably where MR is plotting his next move.

Most bizarre thing I noticed from the speeches in Parliament today was that of the opposition leader , and his TNA was showing that their vote was indecisive and slowly at the count they voted in favour of RW . This is the Most unconventional opposition leader in the democratic world . He is a laughing stock of the world . I dont have an iota of communal prejudice to him , but Mr Sampanthan must realize as a senior politician par excellence that he is not the suitable politician to hold this onerous post . Actually he always defends the government . In case if he opposes , as an eye wash , that is when he is absolutely sure the government will not loose at the ballot . Also during the NCM debate he was talking of a federal constitution . Never he talks about Meetotamulla , Salawa , Kandy victims . This mono-ethnic attitude in him is so ugly ! Is he going to be a national leader ? or will he stay in the same cell ? Any way now the cat will come out of the sack as the government looses it’s 2/3rd .

    • 2
      0

      Siyarata
The TNA is no different to it’s previous incarnations like the FP, TUF,TULF,which have always supported the UNP despite the bitter experiences that theTamils have had from 1956,1958,1977,1983 up to date.
Sampanthan is dutifully continuing with the same old divisive trend which is fed by Southern racism. Both survive and feed off watch other. That is the crux of the problem. Add religion and it becomes volatile, which is what is happening now.
      That’s all.
He does not realise that a Federal Solution will become a viable possibility if only the failed mono-ethnic attitude is jettisoned and a change in tactics is adopted to playing his role as a true Leader of the Opposition by taking an overall interest about the welfare of all the people in the entire country and not the Tamils alone.

Please note FP did support SLFP on various occasions.
Every official or unofficial coalition with southern parties were used by them undermine Tamil partys, made them impotent and eventually being replaced by LTTE.

The same process is taking place even after May 2009, who knows where history repeated will take the country to.

          NV

In 1956 during Premier SWRD B’s SLFP Primership the Tamils experienced the inaugural program. which was followed up with that of the 1958 one.
In 1959 he was killed with a few bullets by an orange robed bald head conspirator called Somarama Thero.
Despite that in the July 1960 supported the SLFP, but when Mrs.B became more powerful with a thumping majority after the said elections, She forgot the Tamils or their welfare and went ahead implementing the policies initiated by her late husband with a vengeance.
The following year in 1961 the Satyagraha protest took place and later the leaders of the FP all got cooped up at Panagoda detention camp and other many incarceration camps located wherever in the country.
Following that experience there was the decision of Mr.SJV to resigning his KKS seat, to challenge the government to contest elections to decide on which side the will people of that constituency is, as they had no representation in parliament for a good length of time.
There after following UNP Dudley Senanayake’s administration between 1965-1970 in the FP, decided reluctantly to play a token role with Senator M.Thiruchelvam as Local Govt minister.
But nothing was achieved despite a so called secret agreement reached between the UNP&the FP.
Why there had it to be a secret agreement that involved the people of that constituency of corse remains a mystery to this day.
What followed thereafter is the adventures of the 1976 Vaddukoddai Resolution and the rest is now history which is continuing even after the fateful July 1983 holocaust and the sunnami of December 2004 and the May of 2009 which is still ongoing.
The only difference is that now the crisis has escalated to involve all denizens of the island who are all being looted left, right and centre irrespective of race, religion or creed and betrayed by the very leaders they elected to govern.
Where that is going to take the country and us it’s people is the question that needs a reply.

This was expected but what is surprising is the number who voted for the NCM. Now those characters who voted for NCM if they have any iota of selfrespect (sure they dont have) should join JO. MR has again let his side. Surely this is the beging of the waning of MR’s popularity. Now no one will pay any attention to him. BAsil had been consitent, Gota was waging his tails and was behind MS, he will also be cast out along with MS. Real looser is MS and MR. Real winner is RW. to some extent BR. Now BR can slowly takeover JO and prepare for next Presidents election.

JVP should use this opportunity to make people understand these results at the grass root level. CBK was chora Rujina,Mahinda Rajapakse was an ALIBABa. Now, Ranil became an ALIBABA and escape. Voters are inthis mess for ever, if they do not understand all those who voterd for Ranil should pay. I am pretty sure, this Maithripala sirisena’s last time as the president he will retire. He has enough dough for his family. HE made wnat he wated. It is the voter who loses every time. Politicians who voted for Ranil eventually must go. that is what reaasonable peole must do. It is difficult to escepar from jornalsits or media organizations as they are also bribed heavily. It was very reasonable to expect from minorities as they all elelcted the Yahapalana govt which deos not exist. If JVP gives this opportunity JVP loses. Remember both UNP/UNF and UPFA were hostile to JVP. HAve a good platform and go forward.

Nothing van be expected from TNA as Sambanthan said he had never garlanded MR but he garlanded MY3. ITis True. JO won it by showing Ranil is a Crooked for power and the worst defeat is for MY3 which says he will not come again. sdo, get ready for this game. Tamils, Muslims, Protestants want their rights at the expense of the 69% other voters who are being oppressed, suppressed and discrminated. There is foreign influence too. Ranil, Mangala and CBL represent that. MY# showed that he is a laso a crooked Fraudster. IF he were honest he could have exposed the scandles.

Within this year a new Constitution giving people maximum power and abolishing the executive Presidency a Must.

We await to see the New Constitution with a Senate of members from among retired Doctors ,Engineers ,Educationists , economists ,political Scientists , Members of the Judiciary ,of sound character and with clean record .and yes every single bill must pass through them and even if they pass it and if the people are not satisfied ,people with a certain number of votes should be able to nullify it without having to go through the court .
By 2018 August we would to see the constitution on line,in all three languages ,so the people can do a pre approval .

Let us see if Ranil has the Iron LKY was talking about ,

The fact of the matter is that truth has come out… MS should know the very basic fact that he was elected with support of UNP votes. with that he would not have been in a position to defeat MR. so, he is ungrateful to unseat Ranil… His plot come out now… He is no longer respected .. In politics the game will roll over.. Now some more drama will come out.. wait and see, now.

Ranil needs to hold his grip in his power. He should give new ministerial posts to some good people .. Honest people., hard working people not for cheats.. so that they could win next election.. Ranil need some good plans now.
how to punish some bad apples so that he would win the support of people..

You need 2/3rds majority in the Parliament to impeach MS which UNP does not have. This consolidated JO power base and most probably TNA will lose the opposition leadership to SLFP and MR will takeover SLFP and the Opposition Leadership. Next two to three weeks will decide the realignment of the political groups within and outside the Parliament. MS does not want to go down in history as the President who destroyed SLFP so he may become independent and let MR lead the SLFP. Ministers and MPs of SLFP who voted for the NCM will be able to secure and win their parliamentary seats in the next elections and be part of the next government (if JO wins which is most likely) in two years time. Well time will tell.
