Ravi Out Of The Way, How About Our Radar Next Cover Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe

By Shyamon Jayasinghe –

Shyamon Jayasinghe

“Our struggle is to restore healthy and functional systems and we believe that systems will more often than not restrain individuals in high position in their instinct for abusing power.”

Campaigners for yahapalanaya, like me, are happy we prevailed over former Foreign Minister, Ravi Karunanayake. We salute Ravi for his decision, which (even reluctantly done) was the most honourable thing to do.

Yahapalanaya activists like us are not there to fight for personalities or parties. We fight for good governance in our country for the simple reason that law and order and accountability on the part of political and other critical players in the public domain is the fundamental precondition for economic and social progress and for a decent, civilised community life. We fought the Rajapaksa regime because it is that regime that brought  in the law of the jungle and enthroned the power of shamelessness. Our struggle is to restore healthy and functional systems and we believe that systems will more often than not restrain individuals in high position in their instinct for abusing power.

The factor of people and civic power is vital to push politicians toward our goal for yahapalanaya. I quote from a previous article I wrote for Colombo Telegraph as follows: we the people are the transformative leaders. Since the revolution of January 8th we face a transformative era in the life of our country. Said Alfonsu Montuori of the California Institute of Integral Studies,“in this transformative moment, everybody contributes to, and in fact co-creates, the world we live in, whether conscious of their agency or not. Every choice, every action, every discussion, every interaction is a reflection of how we are leading our own lives.” Revd Maduluwawe Sobitha Thero had the quick vision to see this and he took the great initiative to launch the civil movement for yahapalanaya. Revd Sobitha saw that politicians cannot be trusted to launch in radical new systems.

Ravi being out of the way-at least for now- we have to turn our radar to other possible betrayers of the movement. Revolutions are often betrayed by insiders. In this sense, we are rather bewildered by some of the reported doings of the Minister of Justice, Dr Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe (WR). Let us watch this Minister. I was taken aback by WR’s recent statement to the Lankadeepe and reported by Daily Mirror (10/8/17). The report states as follows: “Minister of Justice and Buddha Sasana, Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe, said the sale of Hambantota Harbour – a public asset-to the Chinese was a wrong and assured the public that he would not rest until he regains its ownership on behalf of the people.”

I believe WR’s statement does many wrongs. Firstly, he undermines cabinet collective responsibility. WR is in cabinet and the cabinet examined the full proposal regarding the Hambantota project mooted by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. Cabinet unanimously approved the project firstly, as a practical attempt to relinquish unpayable gargantuan debts to China incurred by the previous regime; and secondly, to bring in positive foreign direct investment to the island economy, which is  now in the doldrums.

Second, WR’s statement is irresponsible. Direct investment is crucial if we are to turn over our country from an import-dependent, broke, economy. Since 1977 Sri Lanka has never known what a  trade surplus is. Every government has been creating jobs in  government offices or driving desperate young women to save in the Middle East for a pittance. The economy does not grow enough to look after the needs of the people. The cake isn’t getting any bigger for sharing. Hence, poverty sharing has largely been the strategy. From one broke year to another. WR should know the good reasoning behind the vision of this project. He knows but condemns.

Third, and worst of all, Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe is lying: The land in the area is not given to China as freehold. It is only a lease. Hence, the people still own the land and Wijayadasa has no role to play in a planned heroic struggle to “hand back to the people.” When during the last regime freehold title to valuable land assets had been given to China, we didn’t hear of WR’s heroic attacks. What a hero in the making he now is! Sri Lanka has had a surfeit of heroes like Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe who “fought for the country (meaning Sinhalese.)” Or fought for the people. We do not need anymore plastic heroes. Sri Lanka needs honest men and women in public life who can plan well and deliver the goods. I am afraid WR hasn’t yet demonstrated any such potentiality.

The Daily Mirror report also states that Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe pledged to “fight corruption.” At best, I am not sure of WR being a “pivithuru (clean) man,” who is ideally  qualified for that battle. WR did not  figure too well when in Parliament when he defended outright the Avant Guard operation. Social media went viral with images of WR spending personal social and family camaraderie with Avant Garde CEO, Senadhipathi in (I think) a foreign land. WR also did not look quite right when he stated publicly that he will never have Gotabaya Rajapaksa arrested as the latter was a ‘national hero,’ who “helped save our land.” The most pressing complaint of the public is that although 88 cases of serious fraud and corruption by the former government have been finalised by FCID the Ministry of Justice has not displayed anything but a lukewarm response to take it from there. I have seen a recent video TV interview where Deputy Minister Ajith P Perera evidently expressed dismay about delays in the justice ministry in finalising these cases. His body language seemed to accuse the Minister of Justice.

Avant Guared Wijedasa must go and so too must Ranil Wickramasinghe who appointed him to protect the Mahinda Jarapassa family.
Ranil must go now that his corrupt Finance Minister, Ravi K. – who paid some of the funds looted from CB to me judged best Finance Minister of Asia to some corrupt outfit has gone.

If Avant Guard Tilak Marapana, another Rajapakse supporter and beneficiary is made Foreign Minister, then the JVP must go on the streets to protest Grand Larceny and stop messing with students. SAITM protests are a distraction from the HIGH CRIMES that the parliament of corrupt morons is engaged in

Dumb Burt:: So, Ranil wickramasinghe, that gang leader of thieves, is in Mahinda Rajapakse’s boat, as you say. what an idiot. Just talk about incomptetance of politicians. —————-they prosecuted a Sri lankan lived in ITaly with back dated legislation. that is for powerless. but, powerful, they don’t hear anything and they don’t see anything. Right now, SLBC advertises for politicians, saying Penthouse Ravi did not do anything. what about money laundering and why aloysis handed over him a penthouse. What else to be caught. UNP advertise in SLBC, that former govt politicians di dnot resign. Yet they were in the jail and none of they were ministers or in the cabinet. In case of “I KNOW NOTHING -RAVI” he was not arrested or kept inthe jail. He is still a MP. So, the whole parliament is responsible for keeping thieves inside the building. That talks a lot about the President and the prime minister.

shyamon Jayasinghe is also playing the wrong card here in order to fool the readers I suppose. Only excue is he has said, that he is not a yahapalana sucker. Anyway, Ranil is the party leader for 23 years. MalikS is the party chairman. Penthouse Ravi is the partydeputy leader KAbir Hassim is the Party Secretary. they chose a well known fradulent financial firm to carry complete it. I am pretty sure, Ranil thinks he won the battle. Because, voters are forgetful. Newsmedia is writing half stories just for publicity they don’t have dedicated journalists who know the whole story.

One wonders if both the President and PM are deaf, dumb and blind when it comes to repulsive hypocrites like Wijedasa Rajapakse – but then it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that their ‘non-action’ only reflects their true characters!

Dealdasa has displayed utter contempt against the will of the people established through January 8th revolution. People are absolutely furious. They want him kicked out within a split second. However, both PM & President are totally APATHETIC. Why? We let scumbags of Dealdasa’s nature to derail aspirations of a whole nation? Is cunning Dealdasa, the latest fake saviour of Sinahala Buddhists, holding both PM & President to ransom? Oh, Lee Kuan Yew of SL, where are you? Cheers!

You cannot blame the PM I think its all My3. Going back to MR’s “I Got Files” and considering My3 was a major part of that corrupt govt for the full duration he doesn’t want to topple the apple cart.

PM has to walk a fine line. The president is the one that appoints or removes ministers this is why My3 has made no effort to get rid of the executive presidency.

To a large extent i agree with the sentiments expressed here. WR is playing populist politics. Singlehandedly, he is restoring land to the people, which has been given away by a government to which he belongs. How will he do that without incurring some penalties? He may tout his legal qualifications which these days a dime a dozen among Sri Lankans. The Chinese are far smarter. For one thing, they have caught Sri Lanka, as they say, by the balls and breaking contracts will mean heavy penalties. We do not know what these penalty clauses are, My3, only talking of a clause that enables the change of the contract. What penalties flow when such a clause is invoked? The Chinese are not going to permit this unless there is a penalty clause. The Chinese will not commit billions of dollars without safeguards against changes in the contract. Why not release the contract to the public so that the great public could judge? There are smarter lawyers than WR who can tell us what this contract entails.
There may be reasons for such a giving away of land but they must have be explained. A lease for 99 years, or any lease for that matter is an alienation of land, with the owner relinquishing control for the period of the lease. The Hambantota port is a strategic part of Sri Lanka. Alienation has consequences far greater than money. The idea that foreign investment is necessary is neoliberal and may be right but not at any cost. The cost-benefit implications must be analyzed in an open manner.

We hold Native Veddah’s land in trust for future generations. 99 years lease affects our future generations. Greater care and more discussion is necessary than the reasons that have been given.

timing is right. He on the advice of Maithiri & Ranil has created the opprtunities for Ranil W and Sunil Handunnetti to make very good points. Transformation time.

I sincerely hope now that a turning point for better has come,
JVP will make Yahapalanaya to act smart and bring up all corruption cases after May 2009 . Does not matter it under the previous regime or the current regime.

Do not allow crooked politicians supported by the so called SMART PATRIOTS to stirr up the language and religious issues and distract the citizens from Law & Order issues and Economic and Scocial Mobility issues.

Writers like Shyamon Jayasinghe must nurture politicians likr Sunil HN and Anura Kumara & others in the Yahapalanaya through his writings.

Was smart patriot DJ was in the malu kade /fish market / parliament when Ranil and made their speeches ?

I loathe to come any conclusions without knowing the FULL story. It is said there is always two sides to a story. What the Sri Lankan Legislature must attempt to do is to adopt and implement good, effective and meaningful checks and balances to ensure there is proper accountability of Public Funds and to ensure the Representatives elected by the People to represent them in Parliament conduct themselves in an exemplary manner. Most Western Democracies have those checks and balances in place. Civil Society and other Pressure Group in Sri Lanka should impress/pressurize this Government to adopt and implement such measures. As long as human beings are involved, there will always be the lust/temptation for power and wealth. The only way to mitigate criminality is to have such effective laws and codes of conduct in place.

WR is dissenting far less than R Premadasa dissented while PM over the ban on the JVP ( letter to JRJ in 1984), the Indo-Lanka accord and the IPKF (1987). If Premadasa had been removed then, there would have been no Premadasa candidacy for the UNP in 1988, and therefore no one to save the party and Govt from the ultranationalist violent backlash that was ongoing.

Any move against Wijayadasa and there’ll be no one for the UNP to turn to as a lifebelt.

My God, is DJ suggesting that Wijedasa could be equated to Premadasa? This is so seriously flawed, it is no joke!

There is absolutely no comparison between the two in any way.

I am aware DJ can be mostly ‘unorthodox’ with his thinking but this is going a bridge too far.

Wijedasa is so ordinary, it is extraordinary that in these enlightened times he remains in the cabinet..

Not really Shyamon. I’d bet my bottom dollar he will be back in the cabinet after a while in hibernation and once the dust settles.

The heroic speech he made yesterday and the spin attached, were suggestive that he was insinuating he had just done something outstanding and utterly chivalrous with his long overdue resignation.

    The whole thing stank.

Why Ranil should escape. He is the alibavba who is reponsible for the Central bank day light robbery. He did it twice. Once when it had been exposed, he tried to cover it up and did a second time. when the COPE report accuse dof it. He used three UNP lawyers to defend it and tried to dissolve the govt in order to foregt it. shaymaon Jayasinghe is a dishonest individual. Ir he is living in australia he knows, how even for trifling things, ministers quit.

    Mr.Shyamon Jeyasinghe,

We all are concerned about the future of SL. I have a simple request to you. Hope you will give it a try in the interest of Mother Lanka’s Children.

Can you pursuade Minister Wijeydasa Rajapakse to pursuade former President Mahinda Rajapakse to serve the people and the country in a different capacity. That is to make MR gracefully retire from politics and to become a Ven Thero like Ven Buddhangala Ananda Thero ( former General in the army ) who is serving the people and the country.

Then in turn Ven Mahinda…Thero can pursuade some of his brothers or family members and MPs who were close to him to become Ven Theros.

Mr.Shyamon don’t you think MR or one of his
brothers or Wijeyadasa Rajapakse have the potential to become a Ven Mahanayake Thero of high calibre the country has never produced before.?

Thanks, Shyamon Jayasinghe, both for campaigning for Yahaplanaya commencing about three years ago, and now lauding an element of self-discipline within the movement.

What is now required is that we don’t ignore the stench of corruption that fills our nostrils even now. Don’t allow those investigations to go on for ever, so that they are never over. And finally if it is Ranil Wickremasinghe whom you so much adored who is seen to be holding up the punishment that must be meted out to the Rajapksas, turn your cannon on him as well!

Mr Koch your comments are not fair and relevant..
The author no doubt is writing from the safety of Australia but he is opening the eyes of the Sri Lankans to emulate the standards set by the Australians. There is no harm being done to Australia in being passionate and expressing a view about affairs that needs changes in your country of birth. I am sure he is a fair dinkum Aussie and is proud of his country of adoption like you.
Your misfortune in Ceylon resulted in Australia welcoming you under the White Australia policy. How Lucky !
Ceylon has ceased to exist for the last forty five years so let bygones be bygones.

Yes because people who were resentful of our status decided to discriminate against us who were also patriotic Ceylonese. It had to do with your class envy. Australia has been great to us and welcoming. Now it has been invaded by Sinhala and Tamil lower classes without much cultural assimilation. If you emigrate, then adapt and accept the culture, life, the politics of the adoptive nation like we did. We still love our food etc but if we get into politics, we do so within Australia about Australian politics. This is why Pauline Henson is gaining traction. From Somalis, to other Africans to Arabs to Tamils and Sinhalese you want to come here and refuse to accept we live in a law abiding civilization. You want your enclaves and you refuse to accept you now live in a culturally and economically superior nation and benefitting from it. Respice Finem

PM and M&s are not blind to punish all culprits of former government..but there are careful for safety of their life and families.
Suppose MR & co come to power by crook means or with genuine election what would be the fate of PM and M&s..
    They will punish them .
We know how MR and family will behave..they know that well .
I think that is why they are reluctant…but this is a coward stand too ..
    Do or die in politics..

    Shyamon
The resignation of RK is a silver lining blip.Till and until the case is fully investigated, we are left with the impression that it was forced on him. The replacement? The potential candidates (rumored) show how much bankruptcy Lankan political leadership is in.
Yes, Minister of Justice, Dr Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe reneged collective cabinet responsibility. He said he would not rest until he regains Hambantota Port ownership on behalf of the people. The next step is to make it his patriotic ambition to lead Lankans. Watch out for the language/religion divide getting a new lease of life.

This man says that Ravi should be saluted for his decision to resign!!. It was not RAVI’s decision you old goat, it was forced on him by Sirisena much to the anger of Ranil. So what is your gripe against Wijedasa? He is a member of Yahalapanaya. Why dont they get rid of him ? The reason is simple Ranil and Sirisena have too much to hide.

  • 1

Ravi never stepped down on his own accord. He was pushed out, yet he asked for so many conditions. Ravi created his own plight by acting stupid at the presidential commission. Yes, the house have to deal with RW for appointing controversial CB in the first place. We have to give Wijedasa rajapaksa his due for not interfering with judiciary. What about people who robbed the country yester years. Gamini Disanayake, JRJ, CBK all them has skeletons in their cupboard. Now we have inquired and have adequate information to penalize MR we can do so without meddling with judicial process. What about RKs exchange case. How about Rajitha Senaratne who is robing both sides. Even Sirisena is not out of scope. He was also a bandit in the Rajapaksa era who thrived by robing the medical supplies. Just because he came out to contest the election he was one of the stooges who robbed the country with MR clan.

Raju had not mentioned Premadasa another despicable rogue. He robbed the country and so did his family. It is well established that his son i law Jayakody sold a valuable painting from Presidents House which was sold at a London Auction for 30000 pounds. I think the best person to replace WR is SF. He knows what is rough Justice is like. As a honest person I believe he will give Yahapalanaya what people are asking?

Ravi had to go because of a carefully planned plot to derail the bond scam issue by introducing a totally unrelated apartment deal. The Commission and the AG went on high gear to shift the focus to Ravi’s unethical deal and safeguard the actual criminals behind the bond scam. Most of the UNP politicians who are not in the inner circle realised their fate and have now rallied together to bring down the crooks of the previous regime who were protected by the UNP hirearchy. They as prudent businessman and deal makers who suppressed the investigations on corruption demanded by voters are now at the receiving end and will soon be exposed by media and public minded citizens. The fight to oust Ravi will not end if Marapana who advocated Avantgarde fiasco is brought back by Ranil. It is time for all patriot Sri Lankans to force the HE President to end ties with Ranil’s inner circle and remove them from government if he is genuinely concerned about the country and his future.

This man Wijedasa , a president’s counsel must be out of his mind
to even think of anything against the application of law , being a
professional lawyer after all . How dare he says that he won’t allow
the arrest of GR ? Who is he to stop that ? This is the standard of
our lawyer PCs ! So , for him GR is a national hero and SF , I don’t
remember the word he used to ridicule him . Where did he learn
that national heroes are beyond the system of Justice of a country ?
Some people were given undue popularity simply for their high
jump from one party to another and Wijedasa is one of them . We
are going to end up the jokers of the century with this “yahapalana
circus.” You first select PRINCIPLED CANDIDATES for general
election if you are serious about GOOD GOVERNANCE . How on
earth you can embark on a new mission with HEAD TO TOE
ROTTEN lot ? One new drama started with RK in the name of
YAHAPALANAYA ! And the next sensation ? Every single minister
in the future is going to be targeted with corruption allegation !
My3RW did choose a wrong THEME for running a country in
trouble times . A NATION SOAKED IN CORRUPTION CAN NOT
COME OUT OF IT JUST LIKE THAT . A good start is undoubtedly
necessary but in the case of Bond scam , the good governance
did blunders that are beyond repair .
