Ravi’s Penthouse Or Ranil’s House Of Cards?

By Sarath de Alwis

Sarath de Alwis

The gift of a good liar is making people believe you lack a talent for lying.” ~ House of Cards Tele Play

One must avoid arguments with three types – ass holes, ass wipers, and ass kissers. That said, there is little that can be done with a Shyamon the common denominator of all three types who insists further on shitting all over. I said this once before.

My earlier essay, “Preaching good governance from Penthouses” seems to have irked many apologists of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. If Mahinda Rajapaksa was guilty of financial profligacy, the unfolding evidence suggests that Ranil Wickremesighe can be accused of shielding, defending and justifying grand larceny or virtual rape of the nation’s exchequer.

Mr. Shyamon Jayasinghe has described my indictment of Ranil Wickremesinghe as a comical drama piece. I do not wish to contradict him. It must indeed appear comic to a Bozo.

In reviewing our plight after two years of ‘Yahapalanaya’ we must draw comfort from Trotsky’s dictum that History is the natural selection of accidents. It explains the 2015 election victory of President Sirisena. It was an accident. It was unexpected. That we yearned for it, is another matter.

President Sirisena must heed the advice Hugh Gaitskell gave the labour party that was in turmoil after the death of Clement Attlee. He told the warring left and right wings of the party “Let us not forget that we can never go farther than we can persuade at least half of the people to go”. It is not consensus but numbers that finally matter.

As I said, his success on 8th January 2015 was an accident. The group responsible for his nomination led by former President Chandrika expected that the announcement at the New Town Hall on 21st November 2014 would trigger a substantial number of defection from the SLFP ranks. It did not happen. Why?

The SLFP parliamentarians and many representing ethnic minorities then aligned with the government knew how Mahinda would respond to the challenge. If he won, he would do another JR and hold a referendum and extend the docile parliament by another six years. The possible jumpers decided to wait and watch. Even after 8th January only a handful did.

Apart from Mahinda’s demonstrated political machismo, there was another vital factor. They knew that the Leader of the Opposition would only offer a token protest. He would either walk out as the UNP did on the 18th Amendment or discover some abstract constitutional gibberish that would help confuse the issue, as he did in the case of the impeachment of the Chief Justice.

Mahinda Rajapaksa held the presidential election in the belief that Ranil Wickremesinghe would be his opponent. Ranil is a narcissistic personality that has little empathy for contrary views. He was convinced that he could win the Presidency as he nearly did in 2005. He was clever enough to shelve the notion in 2010 given the ‘Ranaviru’ syndrome that overwhelmed the Sinhala psyche.

While Tamils and Muslims would not have voted for Rajapaksa, they would not have rushed to vote for Wickremesinghe in the same phenomenal proportions as they did for the common candidate Sirisena.

Closer to the watershed event, UNP ranks were motivated and energized. It was not due to any Ranil magic. The selfless decision of young Harin Fernado to resign his seat in Parliament to take on the Rajapaksa monolith in the Uva provincial elections, uplifted the morale of a party. Though Harin failed to win outright, UNP ranks saw the promise of a new alternative leadership. There was life after Ranil, the leader with a fragile self-esteem and a distorted sense of his own destiny.

Very soon, we will know what happened and who did what in the Bond Issue in February 2015 and the repeat of it in 2016.

The Bond controversy emboldened the Mahinda faction. There were no major defections to the Maithri camp. The UNP failed to obtain a decisive mandate. The new President appointed defeated candidates through the national list and cobbled up a two thirds majority and for two years we have lived with the chimera of a national coalition.

Had Mahinda won, resolving the debt conundrum would have been his burden. He would have had to deal with the same illiquidity and the same worries of insolvency. He too would have adopted drastic measures. He would have relied on brother Gota to manage social order and handled parliament with a more than a tame leader of the opposition.

Pieter Keuneman, commenting on the undemocratic features of the 1978 Constitution wrote that the “the task of bringing Parliament back to the people and of making it a real instrument of the peoples will be settled not in the edifice designed by Jeffrey Bawa in the Diyawanna lake. It was more likely, to be settled elsewhere.”

It was his perspicacious, classically Marxist refrain that prompted my anguished remonstration that ‘we made a terrible mistake on 8th January 2015.

As Hannah Arendt points out, regimes that are corrupt and without authority, lacking the confidence of the people can be of extraordinary longevity. What we see today is an extension of the Rajapaksa regime with Rajapaksa himself in hibernation.

What the bond controversy did was to put information that was previously held by a few in to the hands of almost everybody curious about how we manage or mismanage our public debt.

Ranil Wickremesinghe never wanted a commission of inquiry. He made sure that Parliament was dissolved preventing the first COPE committee seeing the light of day. The next COPE committee had a general idea that there was indeed an iceberg but as we know now, it too missed the tip but was guided by the tap of surmise and common sense.

It is not Ravi’s penthouse. It is Ranil’s madhouse that has to be dismantled. When the commission of inquiry publishes its findings, we have the opportunity for a genuine revolution. To begin something anew. It will open up space for the President to form a truly representative national government for the remainder of his presidency. We must dismantle the petrified structure and rediscover the spirit of the movement for a just society that started it all.

Prime Minster Ranil Wickremesinghe stands indicted for his sordid attempt to cover-up the Bond Scam. He cannot sit next to the Governor of the Central Bank and promise economic reforms or announce economic strategy. He never wanted him in that position. He wanted Arjun Mahendran reappointed. Failing that, he wanted Charitha Ratwatte.

The country needs a new credible Prime Minster who can communicate with people and not tainted with scandal. If hard economic choices are needed we need a credible administration. It is much easier to lose credibility than to gain it back. The nation needs action not words.

    Beautiful!

Let us now await the Ranil boys to come out swinging.

Let us also at this time remember not only Ranil’s presidential defeats but also his party’s defeats with him as leader!

If Sirisena and Ranil govt is to take the country forward, they have to have the courage to move ahead with reforms which are two years already late.

Not in that order. Actually No.10 needs be No.1 but in view of current demand let No.10 be No.2. This is basis timeline adjusted and the full stable of corrupt politicos revealed to get a new set and then go for the solutions of your No.2 to No.9.

      Brilliant and thank you!

Bond scame Ranil Wickramasinghe must GO and must be indicted with Mahinda Jarapassa for looting the Central Bank and people of Sri Lanka.
Follow Nawaz Sharif of Pakistan – guilty after Panama Papers exposure.
MR and Ranil should share the same prison cell in Welikada and no prison hospitals for them.
Ranil Wickramsinghe and MR are a curse on Sri Lanka and have collaborated over the past 2 decades to destroy Lanka, while using and condoning Hate Speech against minorities to DIVIDE, DISTRACT and RULE the masses, and promoted a culture of Political Corruption and impunity by use of the lie of “Parliamentary Privileges” for Corrupt politicians.

It is true Ranil is not an ideal leader to govern. Ranil’s government and President Srisena are not doing what they have promised. They are inefficient, there are corruption, there are problem, but the question is: Is it Mahinda Rajapakse lead the so called joint Opposition is the one and only alternative to Ranil & Sirisena to govern this Nation? Is there any better alternative to these two groups who can resolve these issues? This land was ruled by two alternative groups over the seven decades. In 1978 we created a dictator from one group. In 2005, we created another dictator from the other group? Do we need the same dictator who is in blood hungry of power to take revenge on those people who voted (including Sarath) against him?

Mr. Sarath De alwis: Even the president is not a leader. He looks very indecisive. He also boasts 40 years of experience. Yet, he did not know about the merits and demerits of the presidency. He first was for destroying the executivr president post. Then he gave away more than he should have given. NOw, he is just waiting doing nothing. He has not done anything out standing. Ranil is simply useless. His FCID and his handling of the Central bank, how he has destroyed the economy by declaring him a economics – expert are examples. Besides, he is also protecting his butt and he is not removing any wrong doers. He is for making politician fatter at the expense of the country and the poor. He is taking economic advice from IMF. Country goes to dogs. Because, he sells only the profitable govt institutions and not the unprofitable ones.

“He has not done anything out standing.”

He has not done anything ‘out standing’ because he is an out standing politician. He always stands outside all problems without even examining them leave alone solving them.

Thanks, Sarath. This post has reignited my faith in your views after what I considered to be a temporary aberration in your suggestion of a MR/MS leadership.

“Prime Minster Ranil Wickremesinghe stands indicted for his sordid attempt to cover-up the Bond Scam”. Right! But how can this be transformed into some credible action?

And although many of us agree to your assertion that, “The country needs a new credible Prime Minster who can communicate with people and not tainted with scandal. If hard economic choices are needed we need a credible administration. It is much easier to lose credibility than to gain it back. The nation needs action not words”. The problem is, how could this be achieved?

We all had hope that MR/RW would ‘do the trick’, but alas, that was a bunch of horse-feathers!

“Ass holes, ass wipers, and ass kissers,” says Sarath De Alwis. His mentor, Dayan Jayatilleka, boasts that Sarath was at Heidelburg University and so must be respected suggesting a comparison to those having Sri Lankan degrees. Sarath has let down Dayan as his focus is on a smelly part of the human anatomy.
The deep fault- line of both these individuals is that they are “Know-alls.” They urge, “I know the truth, follow me.” If we were to follow DJ we would die of confusion as he has shifted his position so many times-beginning with his affiliation to Varadaraja Perumal’s Eelam Peoples’ Liberation Party. If we were to follow Sarath de Alwis we would be in deep shit ( to use his preferred expression) because he would take us to the megalomaniac, murderous, evil, and corrupt era of the Rajapakses. Sarath says he got ‘desperate’ over Ravi K incident and that is why he asked for the old crooked King to rule our island again. If he takes time to reflect on the endless tale of Rajapakse malice and greed he should commit suicide.

This Heidelburg University character displays his true quality by the lingo he uses, which is no different to the ordinary. If he believes that we should re elect MR and Gota is the biggest joke. Looks as if he is another DJ waiting for hand outs from MR if their wishes come true. Sarath is no different to RK about ethics and principles concerned.

      Shyamon,

While the arguments by de Alwis and DJ in favor of the Rajapskas can be laughed off as nonsensical, I don’t understand your willingness to stick with RW in the face of mounting evidence of corruption. I think both the country and the UNP need new leaders.

If it was Harin Fernando who contested unafraid of the Rajapaksas and re-energized the UNP while RW was cutting underhanded deals with the Rajapaksas, wouldn’t it make sense for him to be given the chance to contest a more national level position, say as PM or President?

Let us see how far the Buddhist community is willing to accept a non-Buddhist as a leader. I think Tamils and Muslims won’t have a problem supporting Fernando for either position. If the Buddhists are comfortable with Fernando in Badulla,
they should have no problem nationally as well?

But if it is deemed too early for the Buddhists to become comfortable with Fernando, how about Harsha de Silva? I think he might be a bit too far to the right for a developing country like SL, but he can learn to move to the center. Either way, it will take a new generation of leaders like them to take the country out of its present morass.

Let us see how far the Buddhist community is willing to accept a non-Buddhist as a leader. I am sure minorities won’t have a problem supporting Fernando for either position.

RW will always protect Ravi MoneyBags K. Why? Ravi MoneyBags K stood by him when the failed internal power struggle occurred. Premedasa Junior, Rosie, Thalatha etc formed a team that wanted RW gone because he kept losing election after election. It was Harin who turned things around in Uva for the UNP. There was a trend starting there; Uva is also ruined by the idiotic MR’s idiotic Uma Oya project.

Rest is history. Bondi-Mahendran, Ravi K, Malick, Harsha, Eran, Charitha are all Rowyel KOllege bois of the older cloth. They are more fluent in English than their mother tongue. They look down on people and not all are dishonest but in case of RW, he has Malick and Eran who delivered bags of cash for elections in the same informal manner CBK, Premedasa, and others also got money for campaigns. RW will NEVER allow Ravi MoneyBags K to be punished. That bugger was accused of money laundering and that case was covered up by Sirisena-RW. Sirisena may have allowed press freedom and social media experimentation, but he is no Virgin Mary. Ask Dudley Sira, how he became wealthy. A Grama Sevaka cannot be having such wealth and Restaurants. His son in low has a big Restaurant in Polonarruwa. How did that happen? You Rowyell Kolleyge bois are a bloody bunch of sex perverts, child molesters, pedophiles, rapists and a bunch of deviants. Otherwise how did Batalanda happen?

    Great line Sarath,

Ranil’s house of cards is collapsing because it’s foundation is too weak.Take a look at the front row in government. They are totteringly weak.

History and innuendo will remember him as a very weak leader, willing to compromise even with the devil for his own survival.

Not a patch on old J.R. for sure!

Sarath De Alwis is goofing in essays, the earlier one and the new one.
    1. Writing for an essay that “If it were Old Royals this would have been better or that would have been better” is not a solution to fix the failed New Royals (or UNP). People do not believe in artificially dissecting one trait from one and attaching to other and making a good government. This is good only for an essay, but not to make a political leader. Writing of that one part of the Old Royals was good and for that bringing them into New Royals is not going to be accepted by people. Sherman Jayasinghe’s response on that is natural. He could be an ass hole or even any other hole, but he is just representing those who voted for UNP and still holding a kind of impractical hope on the New Royals. The question is only clean cut one – “Do you want Old Royal back or not? That is the only viable talk. It is irrelevant it cannot be prevented Old Royals taking over sooner or later.

  • 3
    1

    2. Old Royals curse was doing and New Royals soothing was not doing. If New Royals are doers, they might have brought in 1 million Chinese in the way they wanted in the first place. It is the doers- the Old Royals took the water cannon and protected and stopped them. Old Royal robbed the NGO funds, hand shook with criminals, bribed to power, committed war crime, white vanned – raped and murdered. Anything they wanted, they did it. This is not analyzing, thinking, evaluating, deciding and doing. If one follows right path, yes many things cannot be done. One doesn’t evaluate, think, and be posed to rape, murder, loot…. One just does it. Old Royal’s “doing” is not a political process can be dissected and attached to New Royals. Further, New Royals promise is “No leaders, No Commander and No soldier” will be prosecuted. So their character has to remain as not doers. If Vidya’s murders have to be prosecuted, all in the bribe tract has to be prosecuted. This will go up to the tops in the Yahapalanaya leaderships. When Rosie was protesting in Colombo for justice for Vidya’s murder, she thought the murders were Tamils and it can be easily prosecuted and the IC can be told that law and order has restarted to work in the country. But it is not so. If so Pillaiyan, Karuna, Deva …all can be prosecuted. It is not in Lankawe, even in India Deva could not be prosecuted. Karuna could not be in London. Lanakwe’s French embassy in France; Jalia in USA; Chris Nonis in UK; Udayanga in Ukrain; Old Son Prince in Dubai…… Modaya crowd does not comprehend this.

  • 2
    1

If one can understand that, then one will clearly understand why the Central Bank case cannot be prosecuted, even if Mahendran is only Pariah Demelo. . After looting in trillions, Joint Comedy club picked up on Mahendran thinking it can be easily used to advance their idea to topple New Royals. They are doers, so they thought in that way. But UNP cannot just sue him just because he was a Tamil. This will spill into Ajith Nivard and to Old Royals. So suing Mahendran is only suing Old Royals and that is against the New Royals election promise. That is why New King fired Dilrukshi from Bribery Commission. If he didn’t want to fire Dilrukshi New Son Prince would have been arrested at the site of night club Clique. So, “not doing” has to remain as the phenomenon as the New Royals. Sarath De Alwis can’t get this.

Scottish men may wear skirt. Western women like to wear jean. But imagining the Old Royals doing character with the New Royals or starting to imagine that if the Old Royals had not been doers like raping murdering, bribing geocoding, how good they would have been, is a meaningless writing. Sarath De Alwis is going to accept New Royals as they or going to reject them and going to bring back Old Royals as who they were. In between might be a good essay but a bad, non-existing political choice for the people. He has to be contented with the reality of UNP or SLFP – but, of cause, the name can be changed, if Sarath De Alwis like it as Yahapalanaya – Joint Comedy Club.

We believe only truth is right to resolve the economy by drowning thieves that govern in the sea.

Once the justice department knows a man is a fraud like The Donald throw him out by his balls pronto – that is what I call thinking out of the box. Sri Lankan’s are pussy when it comes to taking to the streets and revolting because the rich always win and the rich are the turdy left with all that stolen wealth from the 70’s- watti amma and co with offshore galore.

On May 29, the BBC asked, “Is Sri Lanka up for sale?” To China of course but China wants its noodles back.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe is prepared to give control of large projects to Chinese companies. But according to Forbes, China’s Ambassador Yi Xianliang has clearly told PM Ranil Wickremesinghe that: “We are not interested. We want our money, not your empty airport”.

    Annon,
You have mistaken. What Sarath wants is crystal clear. He wants MaRa Bros & Co to come back to power and set the scene for Sri Lanka to be ruled by Rajapakse dynasty for at least another 3 generations with the help of dual or triple citizenship holders.

Sarath is not for new thinking and grooming young politicians out side the Raja Clans .

At May day Sarath DA stood with the Galle Face JO May Day-right in front and was cheering the liar Gammanpillai. He came out and wrote giving estimates of the crowd in other places. How could he have given that having remained in the MR crowd? This guy lies. Oh! Mahinda is coming back-for sure this man wrote. Sarath DA is brainwashed by his notorious Guru DJ. He now often goes nightwalking to the Galle Face spot where he stood on mesmerised by the crowds.

Sarath: You said: “country needs a new Prime Minister”. We have exhausted all means of fulfilling that need. Shall we now consult Sumanadasa Abeywickrama or Thotawatta, and perhaps both. By the way, I have forgotten that other “Irshi” who said the present President would die in two months. It was some months past, yet the President is alive. In the alternative, let us assign this to the “Team of Astrologers” who function attached to the Cultural Ministry. That route to find a new PM is best the fitting and acceptable to the 98.5% literate voters of Sri Lanka.

This guy Aloysius buys every government. When Cabrall was Governor of the Central bank Aloysius took Cabrall’s sister to his board. It is so shameful that so called elite sell their soul for a few rupees

When RW became Prime Minister he made it easier for Aloysius by appointing his father in law as Governor !

This investigation should not lose focus. Ravi K and Aloysius are known rascals. We should not waste mush time on them.

The two principal actors in the scam are two officers who took a oath to serve the country faithfully and honestly. That is the Prime Minister and the Mahendran the Governor.

They are thick friends. I dont think Mahendran did any thing at the Central bank without telling RW and perhaps did everything that RW asked him to do.

It is inconceivable that a scam of this magnitude would have been committed by Mahendran without the knowledge and support of RW.

“One must avoid arguments with three types – ass holes, ass wipers, and ass kissers. That said, there is little that can be done with a Shyamon the common denominator of all three types who insists further on shitting all over.”

Excellent opening…………It applies to very many others who still think we could be deceived………….

“The Bond controversy emboldened the Mahinda faction. There were no major defections to the Maithri camp. The UNP failed to obtain a decisive mandate. The new President appointed defeated candidates through the national list and cobbled up a two thirds majority and for two years we have lived with the chimera of a national coalition.”

That is the decisive moment yahapalnaya lost it’s project. This is after the dramatic intervention of Sirisena to dissolve the parliament to prevent the COPE report being presented AND sacking of the general secretaries of UPFA and SLFP on the eve of the general election.

“It is not Ravi’s penthouse. It is Ranil’s madhouse that has to be dismantled. When the commission of inquiry publishes its findings, we have the opportunity for a genuine revolution. To begin something anew. It will open up space for the President to form a truly representative national government for the remainder of his presidency. We must dismantle the petrified structure and rediscover the spirit of the movement for a just society that started it all.”

Sarath is still in a self induced coma…………………Sirisena simply is not capable of doing any of it. A guy who called Ranil, “sir” cannot deliver anything.

MR camp cannot win a Presidential Election. It will either be Sirisena or RW. Why? Simply a matter of numbers. All Sirisena or RW nees is about 40% of the Sinhala vote and 99% of the minority vote they will get. So dream on about a GR presidency man. As for Parliament yes they can win a majority of seats if dissatisfaction with these bungling, bumbling liars continues to grow. If you look at the First Past the Post System, SLFP MR boys won MORE seats but they did not under Proportional system because the UNP got the Muslim and Tamil vote and also the Catholic vote in Gampaha and Colombo districts by large large margins.

So DJ and Sarath, while writing interesting things should be very cognizant of numbers. A President is elected in a straight forward manner. First past the post with 50% plus a bit more votes. IT will NOT go to GR no matter what you say. In 2005 RW lost because Tamil Facist Tiger douchebags blocked Ts from voting. If you recall, after Nuwara Eliya areas were announced RW had a massive lead, and that lead disappeared only after the Sinhala areas came in from the deep south.

Read the numbers. Go to Election Commission website data . Presidential system will advance RW or Sirisena and MR should fight to get the executive presidency removed to have a chance. Sirisena is a representative of ALL Lankans not just Singalams.

      Anthony,

“Sirisena is a representative of ALL Lankans not just Singalams.”

Sinhalese say his name should be changed to ‘Sirisenam’ because he is taking care of Tamils and ignoring the Sinhala Buddhits. Except for a small proportion of die hard UNP idiots, the rest Sinhalese will not vote for Sirisenam again.

Anthoni Pillai – one of the comrades of Sarath,

It looks like you are playing reverse pyschology tactic to bring back one from the MaRa clan as the President or the Prime Minister ie GoRa as the president.

The other option is for MS to become the President again and MaRa to be the PM. That is why MaRa in desparation told he is prepared to discuss with MS or anyone else for sake of taking the country forward. MaRa forgets he relinguished the SLFP leadership.
MS is the leader of SLFP now.
