Respect: Owed, Earned And Restored

By M. A. Sumanthiran –

M A Sumanthiran

September 21st, 2013 remains a historic day in the lives of Sri Lankans. The day represents the dawn of a new era, and marks the arrival of important times.

A democratically elected Northern Provincial Council has emerged today after decades of oppression, violence and suffering. Any supporter of democracy and freedom will rejoice in the results of the Northern Provincial Council elections—regardless of race, religion or ethnicity.

The long struggle for freedom began with the Satyagrahas of the Federal Party. In the wake of the brutal suppression of this non-violent struggle, a militant movement emerged. Three decades were lost to violence and destruction. In the wake of defeat and humiliation, this election restores hope, hope that the legitimate aspirations of the Tamil-speaking people may one day be realised democratically. My party and I have maintained that the Thirteenth Amendment is grossly inadequate to meet those aspirations. But the struggle to negotiate for more meaningful devolution of power will take place within the democratic framework, through non-violent means. This election restores our hope in pursuing that path.

Respect owed

Democracy in the North prevailed despite daunting odds. Scores of incidents were reported during the weeks leading up to the elections. Candidates and supporters of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) were threatened, intimidated, and physically assaulted. Even on Election Day, the violence didn’t end. The military was at the helm of these violations. It openly and unashamedly campaigned on behalf of the United People’s Freedom Alliance and attempted to suppress the TNA’s campaign, a hallmark of which was, incidentally, the call for demilitarising the North. Yet the government’s project fatally underestimated the resilience of the individual voter in the North. And in the end, the voice of the people prevailed. The world’s respect is owed to such resilience.

Yet, there is no room for triumphalism at this time of rejoicing. As a result of the conflict, countless lives were either lost or marred forever. We must at all times remember that the edifice of democracy and freedom is ultimately built upon their suffering. For this, we owe them our unreserved respect. We must therefore celebrate with temperance rather than arrogance or pride. The need for humility in victory is unmistakable.

Respect earned

The TNA has been a voice of opposition for many years. Often, we were a lone voice. Our call for accountability came at a time when no other local party dared to stand firmly against impunity. We defended the Constitution when many wavered in the face of popular sentiment. We have thus earned the respect of principled citizens throughout the country, including those from the South.

These principled stands captured the hearts and minds of principled voters in the North; those who valued their dignity over ‘development’. The Tamil-speaking people have demonstrated that they cannot be bought over by empty promises of economic prosperity. Thus, through their electoral choices, the Tamil-speaking people too have earned the respect of fellow Sri Lankans as equal partners in a shared future.

The Centre must also reflect. The President’s legacy now hangs in the balance. He could either negotiate with the Tamil-speaking people to bring about a lasting political solution, or be remembered as the leader who brought victory to Some, only to be rejected by the Rest. It is hence time the Central Government genuinely strived to earn the respect of the Tamil-speaking people.

The Party and its new Chief Minister have boldly declared their intention to transform rhetoric into action. Even within the narrow ambit of the Thirteenth Amendment, we understand that broad reforms must be introduced in the fields of health and education; that development of the North is a shared responsibility. The Centre still exerts unacceptable control on the Province.  So the challenges will be many and, at times, seemingly insurmountable. Yet the Party will relentlessly seek to deliver on its promises to the people.

The TNA also bears the responsibility of leading by example. By treating regional minorities in the Northern Province equally and with dignity, the Northern Provincial Council can set an important example of tolerance. By uncompromisingly embracing criticism and dissent, it can demonstrate the value of the Rule of Law and of fundamental freedoms. This will be the stage on which the TNA will demonstrate the quality of a truly principled government. In doing so, we will earn the respect of even our detractors.

Respect restored

As we embrace these times—to rejoice, to reflect and to take on new responsibilities—we must unvaryingly maintain respect for ourselves and for each other. Reconciliation is born out of a realisation that the ‘other’ is no different to ‘us’ and deserves equal respect. It begins when we are able to respect each other without the trappings of paternalism. Respect can no longer be measured or determined by numerical majority; equal human worth and dignity compels us to respect every individual and community equally.

True restoration takes place not in the material world, but in the hearts and minds of the people; it begins when respect is restored. This election affords us the opportunity to begin that restorative process and realise the dream of a united country, founded on the belief that all its citizens are equal and none more equal than others.

Sumanthiran says “[T]he struggle to negotiate for more meaningful devolution of power will take place within the democratic framework, through non-violent means.”

So, the Federal Party MPs and Provincial Councillors will be going back to the 1960s Federal Party days with “Sathyagraha” “Anti Sri campaign” “Postal Service” etc. etc. while collecting their handsome pay packets, perks and privileges like duty-free cars provided by the so-called anti-Tamil Sri Lanka Government. And this time, an added feature will be their overseas tours to countries like Canada, Britain, France, Swiss, Australia etc. which,of course, will be paid by the pro-LTTE Tamil Diaspora elements. These TNA MPs and Councillors will also be special invitees to the annual pilgrimage rallies and meetings before the UN Office in Geneva organised by the pro-LTTE Tamil Diaspora. This circus will go on until the next election when they will once again shout racist slogans to rouse the feelings of the Tamils so that they can retain their parliamentary and provincial council seats and ensure continued paypackets, perks and privileges.

SJV Chelvanayagam said only God can save the Tamils. Did he mean “saving the Tamils” from his own Federal Party MPs?

There is no need for ‘Sahyagraha’ or ‘anti-Sri’ campaign as you cannot forecast that this government also will oppose to the reasonable demands of the Tamil speaking people or introduce Sinhalese version ‘SRI’ in number plates of the vehicles. Mr Sumanthiran says TNA will demonstrate a truely principled government with humility in victory, treatment of the minorities with respect and equality to everyone and keep away from triuphalism, arrogance or ill treatment of minorities. Now the problem is internationalised after shelling and bombing of ‘safe zone’ and therefore no need for the reapeat of the 60tees and 70tees.

The government at the centre have already decided to suspected new vehicle licences to newly elected Provincial Council members. It might also suspend paying salaries to them.

“Sathyagraha” “Anti Sri campaign” “Postal Service” etc. etc are obsolete in today’s world. Today it is all global, UN, International community, etc, etc. The name of the game is International intervention.

Wigneswaran warned if the government does not devolve police and land powers to the Province as stipulated in the 13th Amendment, the Tamil National Alliance (TNA), will mobilize support from the International Community to compel the government to do so.

Mr Sumanthiran displays intelligence and true statesmanship unlike the criminals running the central government. By example and decent behaviour MR S and team will earn the respect of the citizens of the country – at least at long last a few educated and honest politicians have been elected to the Provincial councils in the north and this hopefully will translate to rethinking in the south. Time to get rid of the extremist thugs who are ruining the image of Sri Lanka, and have made it the cesspit of Asia.

Mr. Sumanthiran has hinted that TNA might contest PC in the south. Even if TNA does not win other parties will be forced to find better candidates.
So after all the elections of the far North will bring benefits to the south.

It is high time the Tamil National party (TNA) should extend its base to include all the Tamil speaking people of Sri Lanka (not only N&E but central & south as well including the Muslims) into its fold.

As usual an excellent presentation by Sumanthiran.

In my view the key sentences are:”…..through their electoral choices, the Tamil-speaking people too have earned the respect of fellow Sri Lankans as equal partners in a shared future…….. By treating regional minorities in the Northern Province equally and with dignity, the Northern Provincial Council can set an important example of tolerance…..”
The Tamils have to be appreciative of and be grateful to the hundreds of thousands of well meaning Sinhalese persons who have hitherto given unstinted support to the just Tamil cause.

It is also vital that the minorities in the North be treated with equality and dignity.Bensen

Excellent article expressing the feelings of Northern Tamils with dignity and Honour.
Of course there will be hecklers like the comment above from Mr Naga, which is the value of democracy. But then MA Sumanthiran has nothing to fear as he is backed by 80% of his electorate which none these hecklers can challenge. The people have said their dignity and identity are much more valuable than mere existence.

        Piranha,

Without LTTE, TNA also cannot survive. That’s why they brought the mass murderer VP’s picture (and not CM candidate’s) out at the elections. As a result South can still say that Northern Tamils (not Tamil speaking people as Sumanthiran would like to stretch his representation) voted for VP not Wiggie.

Let people in South realise that there is majority in north and they are Tamil and Muslims. Let Tamil realise that there is a Muslim population as well in North and East. hence all learn how to live and share powers and each respect others. Now it is clear after this election people in the North want some sort of political freedom to have their system of education and administration: Keep the police, army and lands with you and yet, why can not you give freedom to have their own education and administration: why are you so rigid and why are so mean? why do not you like share you politics with others. Why do you like subjugate others. If you give freedom to Tamils what benefit people in South get?
Tamil in Europe will invest with their wealth and skills in Jaffna
Capital investment will come to the country and country will benefit a lot
economic activities will increase many time more
tourism industries in north and east will increase
peace will prevail in the country
why do not people realise this
why people still worry about LTTE coming over again

Sri Lankans are in the top 10 of most generous people on the planet. Its the only “3rd word” people to be in top 10. Visit a Buddhist temple or walk around on a Vesak day to get a taste of the generosity of Buddhists. Have a look at Moslems who regularly give a portion of their earnings to charity and more so after Ramadhan.

The problem is not with them if you cannot find a way to live amongt the most generous people on the planet is it really?

Some conceited estimation of generosity. Come Wesak The Business Enterprises around and almost every household is not spared for generous handouts from these Olcott Buddhists to Celebrate, putting up Pandalls and Dan Salas to show their generosity. The worst are the Yellow robed Chief Priests of these Kaputu Bo Pansal. Once the Wesak is over they revert back to their real self, of selfish living treating others as second class citizens.

The International Buddhist Centre, Kaluwella, Galle yesterday (20) freed 90 head of cattle brought for slaughter as a gesture of ahimsa carried on by the centre for the last one and a half decades annually.

Ven. Kanumuldeniye Chandavimala Nayake Thera, the director of the centre said about 3000 cattle who were to be slaughtered had been rescued from slaughter by the centre in past years.

What is Cattle doing with Buddhism? Cows are very special animal should not be killed ??? and it is okay to kill thousands of HalMassos (Sprats).. What sort of Buddhism is that? Why not those monks go and save thousands of half alive bird eggs Sinhalese Buddhists kill and eat everyday?
Do Sinhalese Buddhist kills and eat fish, birds or eggs, because vegetables are not available enough or TASTE (& other medical) perceptions they acquired from Christian civilization ????

It is difficult to explain Buddhism for men who do not feel gratefulness but hate non-believers and idol worshippers. Needless to say hate mongers cannot understand the difference between milk giving cattle and halmessa.

For your information a life is a life whether Ant or Elephant. Why, where has Buddha stated that, a life of a smaller creature is less important compared to a Bigger animal? Life on this planet is sustained with the supply of food of the weaker to the stronger. This is Nature. One man cannot appease his hunger with one sprat. However a number of individuals can appease hunger with the kill of a single cattle.

Similarly for those Olcott Buddhists who believe they collect merit in worshiping Buddha images, May I ask whether the quantity of merit obtained in worshiping a larger than life size Buddha is more than worshiping a small statue or a picture of Buddha? No wonder with similar mindsets these individuals have been emanated crafting Large Statues of Buddha for veneration.

Max I am an ignorant fool. What are you?

You espouse preventing some cattle being slaughtered as a highly meritorious act in Buddhism. It is not for Buddhism alone, many are concerned about lives of others including Humans. However this is the way Nature has created. The irony is you Olcott Buddhists are concerned only about cattle but not of Human Beings that are killed by the score for your Political master MR’s survival. If you all are that concerned why not implement a total Ban on all slaughter of Fish, Fowl, Cattle and all life except Humans according to your vision and Mission. After all there are enough Donkeys of your breed to match the numbers of cattle that have been saved from slaughter?

If anyone would remove MR by any means from the current position, he should be a great buddhist to me. Right at the moment, poor folks have been abused by his regime. This is becoming clear to almost everyone today, but to protect their lives people stay mum.

For me, right at the moment, the name being a buddhist within the island is just limited to its name. How can it be – in a country predominant fraction of the nation are just registered as buddhists but when listening to news, what you got to hear is rapidly increasing crimes. Key reason for this is the top leadership is highly abusive as no previous times. People have fears as Ms Pillay reiterated. Not only tamils but sinhalese live in fears. This is the ground reality under MR regime

MAS is the only TNA politician who has apologised to Muslim for LTTE’s crime. Tamils are lucky to have people like MAS & CVW.
We need more people like MAS and CVW in TNA to clean up the bad apples who are rotting TNA. Thanks to Sampanthan, Mavi was not CM of NPC.
Sampanthan and Mavi should quit TNA and leave MAS to take over TNA. We now need people who can work with Sinhalese people not against. No more going back to 1950, 1960 & 1970.

        Javi,
Muslims have no race, cast, creed or even a country. Description of ‘Muslim peace’ is embedded in the Koran, Muhammad and Allah. Koran has all laws for Muslims. Muslims cannot accept any other law. Democracy is absolutely incompatible with Islam.

When Muslims face a modern day to day problem, and Koran is not very clear about a solution, Mullahs (agents of the Prophet) would interpret the the Koran with the aid of Sunnah (Muhammad’s life and work) and Hadith (Muhammad’s doing in his companions’ words) to find a solution to each and every problem.

Naturally, opinions of all Mullahs are not the same. But Mullahs of each sect insist they alone are right. At times they also differ. So, different sects end up fighting each other for the word of Allah.

Wahhabi Muslims cannot stand any type of idols, even graves. They have even removed the graves of PBHU Muhammad’s wives and built car parks on them. In Sri Lanka, Wahhabis have destroyed many mosques, killed people, dug graves, and burned houses of opposing sects to force their version of Islam to Sufis and Ahammades. First visible result of this extremism is the hordes of billa dressed women Sri Lanka streets. Will we be like Saudi soon?

I agree that M.A. Sumanthiran has reached out to the Muslim community. That is undisputed. I think that he is just into basic human rights and freedom. What I like about him is that he talks about applying the rule of law to everyone equally. He seems to expect that everyone is entitled to basic rights and the equal application of the law and the rules of humanity. I also think this man is committed to freedom and democracy given his being so outspoken on the blatant manipulation of the judiciary and the oppression of the media. I really admire this man….. My hope is that he will someday make president.

An excellent piece as usual by Mr Sumanthiran. A man with a vision. A man who lives in the real world. A man who is a true Sri Lankan.

With the TNA intending to contest elections in the South no one can say the TNA is a regional party or has a separatist agenda. This is a master stroke by the TNA and I am sure it was Mr Sumanthiran’s idea.

Back to ” A little now, more later “, for the time being. TNA terrorism in the guise of the LTTE failed miserably, and security must be maintained in the North in order to prevent it raising it’s ugly head again. Some 100000 Sri Lankan deaths is a heavy price to pay for lack of vigilance in the past. Sri Lankan Tamils need better political leaders. Aspirations to privilege at the expense of OTHERS must be aspirated from their minds.

A very sober presentation. The Wigneswaran factor played a big role in the TNA victory. The people saw in him the epitome of a Tamil leader they wished for- learned, cultured, religious, wise, honest, dignified, mature and above all not tainted by cheap politics. All in all the face that the TNA made a wise choice and the people responded overwhelmingly. Every vote cast for the TNA was largely a vote for Justice Wigneswaran. All other candidates and their qualifications were secondary. I hope Justice Wigneswaran does not let down the people who have placed all their trust and hopes in him. Even the TNA manifesto was in all probability tertiary to the Wigneswaran factor.

“These principled stands captured the hearts and minds of principled voters in the North; those who valued their dignity over ‘development’. I will dispute your your reference to the ‘development’ factor. The people definitely wanted ‘more than development’ for sure, but not ‘over development’. They wanted ‘something’ in addition to development. You may be right in defining this ‘something’ as ‘dignity’.

      Absolute nonsense by Vet. Narendran.
The same results or even better would have resulted if some other TNA leader would have contested instead of Wigneswaran.

It is the ITAK/Federal Party-TNA the people voted for bearing in mind the Tamil aspirations, goals and objectives illustrated by the TNA manifesto. Tamil voters never heard of Wigneswaran except just before the elections. So there is no Wigneswaran factor here but TNA factor backed by the Tamil diaspora and Tamil Nadu students and politicians.

Therefore, Wigneswaran made a big blunder by attacking the Tamil Nadu politicians and activist but redeem himself by praising Prabhakaran as a big hero.

Having elections 4 and half years after Mullivaikaal is not a process of reconciliation which will only come after there is accountability and justice. Functioning of the NPC will depend on the GOSL, which already has shown it’s fangs by removing the land and police powers from the NPC through it’s supreme Kangaroo court.

As for the CM, there are no great expectations that he will be able to negotiate much via his Sinhala family connections or ability to speak in Sinhalese to the Rajapakses. Everything will depend on the international pressure exerted by the UN, UNHRC, USA, UK, EU, Canada, India and Australia. The Indian pressure will come mainly via the TN students, and political parties, and international pressure will come via the Tamil diaspora lobbying their local MP’s, MEP’s, Congressman and senators in addition to demonstrations, protest marches, boycotts, sanctions, and Trade Union action in ports and airports in Tamil Nadu.

The elections to the NPC is just the expression of the Tamil voters in the NP which has given a loud response to the Sinhala regimes and opposition parties including Ranil’s UNP, Fonseka’s DP, JVP and the communist. Now the ball is back in the diaspora and Tamil Nadu courts, as well as the courts in the USA which has full jurisdiction to litigate against the 4 US citizens who may or may have not committed war crimes.

If they did not commit the War Crimes then who did commit the war crimes to become the War Heroes of the Sinhalese?

BTW, MP Sumanthiran has made another great demonstration of representing the Tamil position eloquently as expected. The TNA delegation would be visiting the State Dept. in the USA soon and also visit Delhi again. May be CM Wigneswaran would be included in the delegation.

The devious Gnanakone opens his foul mouth again. I am no
fan of the opportunistic Dr. R. Narendiran. But his complimentary comments on Justice Vignes is perfectly in order.
The mentally deranged Gnanakone will never understand it was the Judge who finally united the TNA that was for long going through difficult leadership crises. Even DBS Jeyaraj, who many believe is a Rajapakse plant, wrote many articles multiplying the disunity about to split the TNA – on more than one issue.

The Tamil Nation voted in their numbers to the TNA because of the judge’s clean image and his detachment to the past mistakes of those who struggled on behalf of the Tamils. How is that Gnanakone did not claim his laughable TfJ, that does not have enough members to form even a small Committee, is responsible for the Sept 21 landslide. It is not difficult to guess the man will be trying various tricks to get close to the judge and lie to him he and his TfJ have always supported him. He might even claim the judge won because of his puny Party.

          Opportunistic? For what? Money, position,favours?

Thank God, I am not in need of any of above at this point in life.

        Gnanakone,
Ah, “Tamil aspirations, goals and objectives [are] illustrated by the TNA manifesto.” Needless to say most Sinhalas agree with your explanation of the Tamil vote. We only differ with you from its end results.

I presume Dr.Narendran is among the minority of that 3,53,595 or 78.48% of Tamils who voted for TNA at this election for NPC if he is a voter there. Agree, most Tamils want nothing but aspirations. They no longer talk about the so-called discrimination. True true, most Tamils couldn’t careless about the development taken place in the North. They want aspirations. Only, they don’t define that aspiration. I also agree with you that a lot of Tamils voted ex LTTEers and LTTE proxies means they are for LTTE ideals. If the highest vote getter, Wigneswaran is not for LTTE ideals as you say, then it is good for Tamils and Sri Lanka.

Though they may be few, I lay a glimmer of hope on Dr.Narendran like Tamils who genuinely wanted to live in one Sri Lanka. Leave out aspirations, there is every opportunity for it now. One can ascertain that if only he check where all these TNA fellows live and do their businesses from. Anyway when earlier said group are added to that 82,838 or 18.30% who voted against TNA manifesto, opposition to LTTE proxies could become a substantial number. The problem being how to increase the numbers of these two groups and align them to become one by the time the next PC elections is held.

Whatever said and done, every man, woman and child would want to better their living standard at the end of the day. Leave out ‘the promised land’ or ‘Bantu land’ that the TNA promised, CM will soon realise economic benefits he could deliver is only a tickle when compared to what the government had done during the last four years. But I have reservation whether the CM for NCP would take a cue from the mayor of Colombo. If the TNA chose to deliver ‘satyagraha’ on the other hand, the government should find a way to capitalise the situation and carve into TNA voter base.

Weerawansa says, Wigneswaran is the Anton Balasingham of the present era. I agree. Talking about himself, I remember Wigneswaran saying one sparrow doesn’t make a summer. Weerawansa is absolutely right if Wigneswaran was unhappy for Tamils do not have hegemony in the now government service like the days of the British Raj. But if Wigneswaran said that because there are only few Tamils in the government service then its a genuine complaint. This is what we await to see.

Then again, Wigneswaran should have known that it is the trousered Gandhi’s Sinhala language boycott is one of the causes for depletion of Tamils in the government service. Whether Wigneswaran aims to insight Tamils and start confrontations with the government and become another trousered Gandhi we shall soon see. For one thing, Sumanthiran has given an indirect notice to all Sri Lankan on what is to come; ‘Satyagrahas of the trousered Gandhis.’

Wigneswaran and co ought to know that Sinhalas have come a long way from the days that they were kept down and under by the British Raj and their servants. Average Sinhala villager is much more advanced, knowledgeable and united than the days of the Chelvas. They’ll face any satyagraha with no problems what so ever.

Because when those voted in by the majority community, rule at the centre, they forget that the minorities are also citizens of this country and ride rough shod over them.

I have one simple question for TNA

Do you still operate on Thimpu and Oslo declarations ?

if the answer is YES there will be NO peace in Sri Lanka

if the answer is a clear no then there can and will be peace in Sri Lanka.

If you go with Thimphu declaration it’s logical conclusion that any self respecting Sinhala party can accept is bifurcation or the division of the country into 2 parts. One that is majority Tamil with no multicultural populace and a multicultural Sinhala area . If you look at the latest statistics only 2.5% of Sinhala population lives in the northern and eastern provinces whereas 48% of Tamils live in the non northern and eastern provinces. So the Sinhalese people do not need lessons in multicultural living. One point about multicultural living is there is going to be conflicts and tension. If you have a mono ethnic province you would not have experienced these…….

    Mr. Sumanthiran:

” September 21st, 2013 remains a historic day in the lives of Sri Lankans. The day represents the dawn of a new era, and marks the arrival of important times.

A democratically elected Northern Provincial Council has emerged today after decades of oppression, violence and suffering. Any supporter of democracy and freedom will rejoice in the results of the Northern Provincial Council elections—regardless of race, religion or ethnicity.”

You people are very good at boasting while you guys are naked.

It is the Sinhala Army which brought all these things that you talk about. Did you guys appreciate them. Once every thing is cleared for you guys from Colombo to preach your tribalism and the greed, you people have forgotten how LTTE treated your people. Pabakaran created completely a new caste. At that time you people were hiding behind the Silhala Soldier’s security.

what kind of respect you are talking about ?

Just four years ago, Northerners helped a barbarian. Now, you people have forgotten everything and he is a maa-veerar to you guys.

I so disagree with you. TO dismiss Sumanthiran is a big mistake. You are looking at a historic figure here. A lot of people see it early on before most. I hope you get there yourself. There is a lot of room on Sumanthiran’s ship if you are a supporter of freedom, the rule of law and democracy. Sumanthiran is a unifier my friend, not a divider. You are looking at one of the most brilliant men in the entire country.

    Putin’s Speech on Feb. 04, 2013

This is one time our elected leaders should pay attention to the advice of Vladimir Putin…. how scary is that?

On February 4th, 2013, Vladimir Putin, the Russian president,
addressed the Duma, (Russian Parliament), and gave a speech about the tensions with minorities in Russia :

“In Russia live Russians. Any minority, from anywhere, if it wants to live in Russia, to work and eat in Russia, should speak Russian, and should respect the Russian laws. If they prefer Sharia Law, then we advise them to go to those places where that’s the state law. Russia does not need minorities.
Minorities need Russia , and we will not grant them special privileges, or try to change our laws to fit their desires, no matter how loud they yell ‘discrimination’. We better learn from the suicides of America , England , Holland and France , if we are to survive as a nation. The Russian customs and traditions are not compatible with the lack of culture or the primitive ways of most minorities. When this honorable legislative body thinks of creating new laws, it should have in mind the national interest first, observing that the minorities are not Russians.

The politicians in the Duma gave Putin a five minute standing ovation.

If you keep this to yourself, you are part of the problem!

Wow! The TNA Road Show has started much earlier than expected. These dumb a**ses continue to live up to a predictable pattern of decisions you would expect from Geniuses amongst the Tamil Diaspora.

I wonder if our Virtual Prime Ministers residing in US and UK are directing the Road Show for Ilangai Tamils. Because, if they are not, these TNA politicians are already doing a great job in proving themselves to be dumb a**es. Who will sympathize for the fate of Ilangai Tamils who had no other viable alternatives to vote for in the elections?

The elected leaders in the North of Sri Lanka have an excellent opportunity to show the world that out of adversity comes economic prosperity. The North should focus on development without any delay and sets an example to the rest. Tamils living overseas should take an active role to be a part of their roots in Sri Lanka

We have learnt plenty of stories of suffering people helped by sympathizing Kings and Priests in the good old days when prince Siddhartha was a child. Seeing the sufferings the Prince moved out of his father’s Palace and sought ways to end the suffering. He found Meditation as the tool to end the suffering. He had the courage to endure the pains of suffering himself. He inflicted himself to hunger and pain and overcome the suffering through meditation until he attained Nirvana. Most people in the north have undergone severe hardships during, and before insurgency and during the war against insurgency. Their kith and kins died in shelling and firing. Most of them need help, food and a roof above for a living. Some of them need help to give them a will to live. This is the condition today. What is wrong if they ask for what they need. Please help them without being hypocritical. Jealousy and Hippocratic words only add fuel to fire. Being at the helm of power and decrying is the worst cruel and mean attitude for a human being. Please think towards becoming a good human.

Mr Sumanathiran says the Northern Inhabitants accepted the “TNA and Dignity over Development”.

Wonder what the position of more than half the population of Jaffna Tamils who have migrated to Colombo?.

And they are the English speaking elite who got the dough to go with it.

Do they prefer development, dignity or both?.

The great majority of the 80 % mandate that the TNA is gloating about came from the poor rural real inhabitants of the North.

Perhaps after backing the 30 year liberation supported by the TNA and it’s boss Mr Sambandan.these people aren’t interested in any development

But the only tho candidate who can genuinely claim to represent them coudn’t get a seat on the CM’s board , because she wasn’t up to speed with the Vellala dialect.

Then again it is the dignity that seems to matter for Mr Sumanathiran and his TNA.

      K.A Sumanasekera
“Do they prefer development, dignity or both?.”
You must know this that infrastructure is not just roads and it is the job of the government to attend to that. If the private sector does it then even your army will need to pay a toll.
Interestingly, a couple of years ago PM Cameron informed UK that 1500 Tamil Diaspora businesses provide a turnover of £2 billion and employ 150k and they have done this in 30 years and are very much like the Jewish community of professionals. Rajapassa has invested $3 billion only. Money talks which is better – The Butcher of Ceylon Rajapassa or Your own kind when ethnicity is at stake?

      Dear Mr. Sumanasekera,

Looks like this Vellala obsession has got into your blood-stream. As far as the Jaffna Tamils are concerned, it is on the way out – thanks to your late friend VP. Sampanthan and team are very much interested
in development. Anandhi will get her due place.

You should worry more about those recently rejected canines Booruwansa
and Champikaya. Navi Pillay has already mentioned them by name and when
the Rajapakses hit the can because of them, it will be too late to apportion blame.

What you suffer is what my name suggests.

    Mr.Sumanthiran:

“If I were a Sri Lankan (or Ilangai) Tamil living in any part of Sri Lanka, I would pose this question to the ‘Tamil’ politicians who want my vote:

What is that you have accomplished since Ceylon became an Independent country? You have been talking about Federalism, political solution, ethnic discrimination, etc. for decades.

But, WHAT is that you have actually done for the benefit of the people you were supposed to have served? I know what the LTTE did – they destroyed much of what the ‘Sinhala’ politicians built. Some of my own relatives are still talking about the need for a ‘political solution’. Yet, they all got their free education in Sri Lanka. “
