Rise Sri Lankans Our Country Needs You NOW!

By Sharmini Serasinghe

Sharmini Serasinghe

United we standdivided we fall“- Aesop

I am sick, tired and bloody fed up of reading and listening to pessimistic tales of woe on the unprecedented crisis we and our country are facing at this dark moment in time. I am also fed up to the back teeth with reading and listening to lamentations of what should have and could have been done. This in my opinion is sheer stupidity, a waste of time and energy. What has been done has been done dusted and finished. We cannot return to the past and undo it. Period!

Instead, look at what needs to be done and can be done, NOW. We the voting public are collectively responsible for the state our country is in today. Why? Because we all foolishly placed our trust in the dregs in politics to represent us and administer our country!

They have all collectively or not, irrespective of political parties, kicked us all in our faces and let our country down in the most degrading and deplorable ways possible. So stop pointing fingers at the follies you voted for and point it at yourself instead. They did this to our country because we let them. We have looked up and spat on our own faces.

Where are all those closet patriots who stand tall and proud for our national anthem and flag? Where are all those ‘patriotic’ thugs who in recent times were proudly shouting themselves hoarse claiming to be decedents of a lion with ‘Sinha Le’ running through their veins? Have they all returned to the wilderness with their tails between the legs? Where are those ‘nationalists’ in saffron robes and their cohorts, who ran amok to ‘protect’ our motherland from the Other? Where are our apathetic and freeloading Mahanayakes? Have they all swallowed their tongues? Where are those who claim, “I’m proud to call myself a Sri Lankan”? Where is your patriotic “pride” now?

I’m tempted to tell you all where exactly you can take your hypocritical claims and shove it!

We Sri Lankans shamelessly stand naked in the eyes of the world today with our stark lack of patriotism and cowardliness displayed for all to see, through our collective inaction in the face of a crisis our country has never known before and is facing today. We have proved to the world that we are nothing but a selfish nation of weak-minded, spineless and witless weaklings- an utter disgrace to our so called 2500 year-old history. Shame on you Sri Lankans! Is this how you want your future generations to remember you? Is this the legacy you want to leave for your country?

Today, our country stands as a Democracy in name only- an epitome of a tragic failed state – making a mockery of Democracy and all what it upholds. The need of the hour is to reclaim our self-respect as Sri Lankans, show the world what we are made of by showing the door to all those politicians responsible for plunging our country into this disgraceful, repugnant and pathetic hole. This is the only way possible to save our country because the responsibility lies with us and us alone. The status quo is an indictment on us the citizens of Sri Lanka, not the political leaders we elected because they represent us. Hence we must do it ourselves!

What our country so desperately needs right now is for all its people to rise collectively but peacefully, put their shoulders to the wheel and support the few civic minded amongst us who still believe in our country and the freedom of its people. We are few and far between. Our solitary battle on behalf of our country and her people has left us tired and worn out but, we will not give up on our motherland until our last breath leaves us. But, we cannot do it alone anymore. We need you Sri Lankans to stand with us en masse for a common cause- to save our Sri Lanka. Do you Sri Lankans got what it takes to do it?

Dear Mahanayakes of all the nikayas in Sri Lanka, the time has come for you to rise from your slumber, get out of your comfort zones, take to the streets and mobilise the masses peacefully to save our country or else, you will go down in history as cowards and traitors of Sri Lanka you so proudly regard as “Buddhist Sri Lanka”.  It’s your call NOW!

“What has been done has been done dusted and finished. We cannot return to the past and undo it.”

My Elders have been hearing the same excuse for donkey’s.
Can’t we not get things right at least third or fourth time if not first or second time?
This is a country of only 21 million stupid people, is it difficult to run this island without any man made disasters and/or crooks created crisis?

This is very similar to the Panchatantra story of Monkey and the wedge.

Emperor Asoka must be turning in his grave for giving Buddhism to Sri Lanka by sending his own son and daughter. The 21 million stupid people of Sri Lanka (including the Buddhist monks) are making a mockery of Buddhism.

      Words,

Unlike you I read it as she has pleaded with the Mahanyakes to rise up and mobilise peacefully! Nevertheless, the ruining of the country perpetrated by the politicians with the blessings of the successive Buddhist priests. The history stands testament to that fact!

Mahanayaka’s misleaded the politicians. they are also politicized/ They live a luxurious life against Lord Buddha’s teachings. They should preach Ahimsa, tolerance and peace. We see in Sri Lanka Buddhist Monks involved in attacks against minority communities. What a shame to Buddhism and Sri Lankans,

Can the so called 2500 year-old history of Sri Lanka enhance our self-esteem? On the contrary, shouldn’t we be feeling greatly embarrassed and deeply humiliated when we learn that the Sinhalese are the descendants of Vijaya, the banished profligate son of an incestuous marriage between (Sihabahu) and his twin sister (Sihasivali) whose mother was so exceedingly lustful that only a real lion could satisfy her sexually? Moreover, Sihabahu killed his leonine father, the king of the brutes […] Thus, according to the 2500 year-old history of Sri Lanka, brutishness, bestiality, incest, patricide and profligacy, were the stuff of our genesis […] of the 194 rulers of Sri Lanka, 60 became king by murdering the predecessor, 53 became king by murdering a male sibling, 30 military men became king by murdering the reigning king, 5 became king by murdering their own father, 1 doorman became king by murdering the king, 1 queen killed her husband to take over the kingdom, 13 kings were killed in battle, and 11 kings were overthrown by their successors. Why are we acting so surprised now?

What a pity there was no room for a Henry VIII type who beheaded 4 wives, converted from being the defender of the Catholic faith to form his own cult (called the Church of England and democracy leader Chickera now heads and PUK Hamu’s uncle once headed). Henry died of syphilis at the end. Proud?

If you want to worship such heaps of shit instead of great kings like Devanampiya Tissa, Dutugemunu, Mahasena and others, go ahead and eat their shit.

But remember you belong to a disgraceful soul-less minority in this country.

Come elections what choices do the people have. It is the same bunch of politicians whichever party they will contest from. Should the voter boycott the elections or go all out in massive numbers and defeat the undemocratic and corrupt forces. Every politician will make promises under the sun that they will never keep when they come into power. Like me I am sure there are millions who are angry and confused. God save Sri Lanka.

We don’t want to comment a lot in this essay because the readers who read the Old Royals’ acolytes’ comments going to read ours also with the same eye. That is the reason we avoided commenting anything in “Deranged”:https://www.colombotelegraph.com/index.php/deranged/ another hypocritical essay.
We normally cannot go with Sampanthar’s s decisions to support and shoulder Ranil’s government which spends 10% of GSP to arms with the approval of Sampanthar. But Sampanthar is precisely correct on this of having the Lankawe Democracy restored because that is mountainous distraction to Tamils. If this matter go out of the screen only another one (Tamils’ Problem) will be displayed by IC. Suppose Lankawe permanently sink into North Korea status, and then what is the point on Tamils asking Singapore- Malaysia Solution? At this time of the history, Tamils have to stop their activities and should make sure that Sinhala Lankawe is not sinking not just to the level of North Korea, but not even to the level of Pakistan, because Tamils cannot take Pakistan – India solution.

To be precise on Ms Sharmini Serasinghe’s hypocrisy, Ms Sharmini Serasinghe is the latest addition to the Family of the Kandy Ayatollahs. She probably decided to pray the Boo three because she is too fears New King’s actions may invite IC interference, which the “Smart Patriotic” author cannot take it.

Mahanayakes are a bunch of jokers worse than politicians themselves….. Commercialized and Ruined Buddhism, Promoted mystics and superstitions.

Instead of writing books and promoting knowledge they wanted to build temples and shrines, places of worship like the stone age religions, shamelessly bought and accepted insanely expensive gifts when the country bled with poverty and ignorance. Kept silence while their goons promoted extremism.

Stop crying for help from these fake monks(clowns) and stand up as Sri Lankans (without labels of race and religion).. that way you can save true Buddhism (a path of love and shared knowledge) and our country

Lex: I agree with you 100%.These Mahanayakas misguided the leaders and ruined the country enjoying a luxurious life against Lord Boddha’s teachings. These people must be kept out of politics. If they are allowed to continue the country will plunge in to deep misery and will bankrupt the country.

I’m really to send this condolence for sudden death of SLFP. After, 65 years of service to Sri Lanka, Maithri killed SLFP in a broad day light with his punch on it back. It has been a painful weeks to see dying a patriotic political party . I’ve never voted any party in Sri Lanka except for SLFP in my 55 years. So sad to see SLFP has been killed by one of its leaders. Maithri’s name should written by red letter in history book for killing this wonderful party. It has had some of best political leaders . This Gramasekera type Miathri comes and kills his own party.. Now MR will try to write his family name in politics by creating his own party.. He did not by collaborating to kill his own party. His father’s party…. this is a sad week in Sri Lankan politics

Sharmini Serasinghe: You say: ” We are few and far apart” and want ” What our country desperately need right now is all its people to rise collectively but peacefully”. You and your “FEW” and “APART” must know such a “Rise Collectively” is not at all going to be “Peaceful”. Isn’t that the “REALITY” and the “OBVIOUS”? If you don’t accept that, then it is BEST that you are “FEW” and “APART”, because, we who want to avoid any more “BLOOD SHED” in this country would want the people NOT TO RISE at this moment. There are OTHER MEANS and the people must be told to avail such opportunities. At least , some have decided to TEST this conflict through an supposed to be Independent Judiciary. I know those who are bent on “DISRUPTIONS” will start “Muddying” the water for the EASY CATCH. One such has publicly wanted “2/3 Majority” on the “Surface” but deep down, those self styled and blessed by High Priests, “HITLERS”, clothed in “Deshapremi” and “Civic Minded” attires would EMBRACE and WELCOME your call to the people to “RISE” collectively with a sugar coating of “PEACEFULLY”. Please, “YOU FEW” and” APART” remain that way for the sake of this county’s peace, at this moment. By the way are “YOU” and “FEW” are from “ELIYA” and “VIDWATH” of “GR”? I ask this, because that call to people is the same “HIDDEN AGENDA” of these two outfits that belong to “GR”.

Madam, who are your patriots ? Do you count mass killers murderers rapists shit bombs throwers bribe takers kudu sellers liars cheats and modayas gather in thousands in meetings, as patriots? For me these are the one alive active and prominent for the last so many years in Srilanka. Please do not call them to rise up, I beg you, for the sake of very few good people still live in remote villages.

It is one thing to ask the “patriots” to rise up and stop the latest attack on democracy: The reality is different.

More than 2000 years ago Socrates argued that democracy is flowed based on his analysis of emotions and desires of people.

People don’t vote based on reason alone but emotions play a large part, if not the only basis.

Sri Lankan society if replete with emotions: Anti-Tamil, anti-Muslim, Sinhalese-Buddhist supremacy, anti-capitalist, just to name a few dominant ones.

From 1948 Sri Lankan politicians have captured power appealing to some of these negative emotions.

So, what do we do now? First we must have a society sans these prejudices to build true democracy, let alone rise up for it! Will the demagogues in aspiring politicians allow prejudices to die off? No, they know that it is the short cut to win and gain power.

SO what will happen is muddling in a downward spiral of “majoritarian democracy” and a century since independence will arrive down the road.

    Madam
You said ‘we looked up and spat on our faces’ which is a a true description of the self inflicted injury that the people of this country cause to themselves when they elected the “dregs” as you describe the leaders they have elected.
They will be with us as long as we are racist, incompetent, lethargic, stupid intolerant and believe in lies.
Our leaders are the mirror image of us.

The lady is absolutely right. We need to mobilise the masses and find a leader who will take us to a better place. It WILL NOT work with any of the current contenders. We need a change. I feel we need, as a priority, to thin down the deadwood, and reduce the size of this Parliament to Half, or even Less, of the leeches that cling on just to rob the country. Do we really need to subsidise a bunch of mostly fat, lazy slobs who drain the resources of an already flagging economy, riding around in fancy vehicles trailed by a convoy of security personnel and now AMBULANCES for heaven’s sake! What actually are they threatened by? If Mr. Imran Khan our neighbour can do it, why with just 21 million inhabitants can we not run this show with fewer parlimentarians and less pomp & pageantry? The criteria for selecting a new leader (if we ever get to a FREE AND FAIR election) would for me, be based on honesty, integrity, and more importantly, austerity, because we can ill-afford the extravagances that these Ministers have come to EXPECT as their God given right! Less free food, less luxury vehicles and goons to follow them around, less of the ‘freebies’, might just trim them down enough, to make them pull their fingers out, and actually do something for this country.

What ever MS saw of RW wasn’t pleasing to MS. Undertakings taken by the UNP and promised to the nation was not fulfilled by the UNP. Shamini’s undertones are that the two party state is largely galvanized in action for personnel profit may it be material gain or political power. Note they all lead to profit.
For our politicians democracy and leadership is to rise above their individual state of poverty or to maintain their wealth and power. The citizons in the meantime has legal rights which may be compromised by the politicians. The populace has been kept compliment, through various instrument such as ragging at Uni’s, powerty in disposable income or choices in life. Consentrating power away from the voting public ect. Effectively leaders which we elected was instrumental in destroying the machinery of the process which is democracy. These leaders once elected yearns to be dictatotorial. One of the arms of the appendagers functioning democracy is a free media. However the media is embroiled in party polity. The voter is ignorant of real judgement, the average voter is looking for a tool to decide the good from the bad of our current players in governance, they are players not aultuistic public servants. The need of the moment from the press is to create a matrix in their hard print which indicates against names the qualirty of the available leaderships covering management capabilities, vision, corrupt practices to date ( proven or not), attendances at office or parliament, promoting of investments to area under the persons durisdiction. It needs to be clear so we can see the qualitative differences between the so called leaders. Finally an average score of leadership effectiveness would go a long way. MS it right we need honest leaders with Vision. Yes I agree, the religeous leaders needs to lead people, stop supporting those who are corrupt and teach the words of the Budha.

Well analyzed and well written article explaining the truth nothing but the truth which most of the public will now understand. Please vote for a honest and sincere person who has a good vision to lead the country. STOP electing crooks, egoistic, bribe taking, commission demanding, cut throat Members to Parliament to ruin and plunder the country any more.
LICK out old uneducated, uncivilized, greedy politicians.
ELECT ENERGETIC YOUNG YOUTHS WITH STRONG WILL TO LEAD THE COUNTRY.
LEAVE THE POLITICIANS TO LEAD THE COUNTRY WITHOUT THE INTERFERANCE OF MAHA SANGA OR MAHANAYAKS WHO ARE SUPPOSED TO TEACH LORD BUDDHA’S TEACHING AND PRACTICE HIS TEACHINGS.

As you mention its time for an uprising against the people who really harm the nation. We have been battered almost every hundred years from invasions let by south indians and in between 500 years from three powerfull european nations and not omiting the islamist intents. If not for the so called stupid monks as you point out in a degrading manner by this time we would be Abrahamic believers ,who start his teachings with hate in between the family , killings, sacrifices, betrayels , incests, etc, etc. Sadly some seudo sinhalese think its a correct path. With the former gvt sri lanka would have ended up like an central american country. Please be aware of the so called stupid sinhalese, we are damn tolerent but dont try to serve more than what you can eat.

The Singapore’s largest trading partner is China.

Ranil has blindly led us to the West instead of following S’pore into the future.

China’s per capita income 16,760 PPP dollars (2017)
Sri Lanka’s per capita income 12,470 PPP dollars (2017)

Given the per capita income of each country what are you suggesting?
In 2014 and 2015 Singapore was the largest investor in China.

“Ranil has blindly led us to the West instead of following S’pore into the future.”

Singapore didn’t follow the same mistakes that were made in this island by your racist, parochial, murderess, corrupt, stupid …………….. leaders. Now tell us about China’s Belt & Road initiatives and what Ranil didn’t do about it?

The Belt & Rail initiative was not new. It was proposed by UN in the mid 1950s. Part of it is the Indo-Sri Lanka bridge. One cannot pick and chose initiatives to suit their racist agenda. One should take complete initiative or nothing.

    Dear Sharmini:
Thank you for writing a very enlightening article on the present political situation in Sri Lanka. I quote from your article analyzing the problem:
“Today, our country stands as a Democracy in name only- an epitome of a tragic failed state – making a mockery of Democracy and all what it upholds. The need of the hour is to reclaim our self-respect as Sri Lankans, show the world what we are made of by showing the door to all those politicians responsible for plunging our country into this disgraceful, repugnant and pathetic hole. “
I fully agree with the above analysis. Sri Lankans can use their vote intelligently at elections. That’s all they can do in a Democracy. From the time of independence the voters have changed governments from the UNP to SLFP up until the last election. As a solution they voted for both UNP and good portion of the SLFP in January 2015. Sri Lanka is in this situation as a result of that experiment. Is there a another thing the voters can do is the question. The next one or the last thing they can do is a National Government! But, they have to be careful about the fight between two regional giants – Indian and China.
Your solution for the Mahanayakes to take to the street and lead the people will never happen, though it is one of the things to try.
We got a bad set of politicians. Democracy is an expensive system to practice in a country that has been ruled by Kings and Queens over roughly 2000 years. Sri Lanka was ruled by the British from 1815, and they handed over a system in 1948 which we have modified in 1972. We need to improve the quality of the politicians we have. We have educated people in the country and it will take some time to get them elected through the party system to the Legislator and the Executive.

    Shamini,

I am tempted to applaud you for these brave words.

“So stop pointing fingers at the follies you voted for and point it at yourself instead. They did this to our country because we let them. We have looked up and spat on our own faces.”
Dont forget you voted for MR who you called Dear President.
You have to be careful with your words as we are safely out of the country but you are living in Sri Lanka. Under the draconian ” Prevention Of Terrorism Act ” you could be charged for INCITING VIOLENCE especially if MR is re elected.
The problem facing Sri Lanka runs much deeper than this . You are all guilty( so called intelects Dayan the Pankawala , Laksri the Pretender ) for allowing this to happen when you should have all risen when we were slaughtered durong race riots. I lost three members and I am still grieving.

The facts speak for themselves. and you all were either naive or ignorant in having a narrow mind trying to finish off the Freedom Fighter but never realised or saw the dark clouds.
IT IS TOO LITTLE TOO LATE.

    Let me educate you.
In Land Law there are two Tenures or Interests.
    1) FREEHOLD & 2) LEASEHOLD
India owns the Freehold and Sri Lanka owns the Leasold from here to etenity.

Before you calve out a Leasold interest and assign it to a third party ( China ) you need to seek the permission of the Superior land Lord ( the Freehold Owner)
MR never did and there are things called Covenants and both for breach of covenats and failing to obtain the permission the Syperior Land Lond can force an entry and that is what is happening.

So dont point the finger at RW and in my view RW is the only man who can save Sri Lanka from disaster because he has no BLOOD ( I mean directly) on his hand although he did admire the War Winning CRIMINAL.
Sri Lnkan Democracy is Dead and Buried and the FUNERAL PYRE is burning and when it settles for ATHMA SHANTHI please collect some ashes and scatter it over Kelani River but if possble in River Ganga or Januna.

Madame Serasinge, Despite race, religion, ethnicity we Sri Lankans are ONE people, ONE nation.

I ask all people rich or poor to go to the Temples, Churches, Mosques and pray for Justice, Democracy & Peace for the sake of the future generation.

All Sri Lankan have a day of fasting & prayer like Mahatma Gandhi.

Do not attend political rallies of politicians of any hue or colour.
