Parents of children studying at the Royal institute, the International School of Higher Education which operates six branches in Sri Lanka, have complained that with the introduction of retired Major General Kamal Gunaratne as the school’s Director of Administration, both parents and children have now been subjected to torture at the hands of the country’s war veteran.
Several parents when contacted by Colombo Telegraph submitted a dossier of documentation and complained that the school besides filing bogus police complaints against a set of parents also went on to humiliate its children, in its own school premises and also unethically terminated some for non-payment of school fees on time.

This letter sent by the school to parents dated 2014, stated that school fees will be increased bi-annually by only 12%.
A parent whose child is a current student and wished to remain anonymous said, “The school which acquired the services of the retired war veteran Major General Kamal Gunaratne utilizes his services to intimidate us parents, especially when we delay in paying school fees. Gunaratne in return also used his brother A.S.P Amith Gunaratne Director of 119 services and who is attached to the Mirihana Police station to intimidate us. This is when the school made a bogus entry at the Mirihana Police Station and hauled four parents in for an inquiry. Actually the school here is at fault as they keep unethically increasing the school fees every year by huge proportions. There is no proper school fee structure. The fees sky rocketed from Rs 37,000 to Rs 63,000 for some grades such as year 8 and year 9. It was only in 2014 that the school issued a letter stating that only a 12% increase will take place bi-annually. But that practice never happened. The school hiked up the fees in 2016, 2017 and once again in 2018.”
Most of the issues parents faced began in September 2018. This is when the school fees were yet again increased leaving many parents perplexed. However a group of over 250 parents signed a petition and submitted it to the Chairman G.T. Bandara opposing the increase of school fees.
Some parents then visited the office of the school and spoke to its Principal at its Nugegoda Branch to explain their displeasure. This was as the Royal Institute did not maintain consistency with its school fee increase among all of its branches.
However the very next day four parents were summoned by the Mirihana Police Station based on a bogus complaint made by Royal Institute, that a set of parents had threatened its Nugegoda Branch Principal the previous day.
One of the parents who were summoned to the Police Station said, “This was all part of an orchestrated plan. Whilst we were summoned to the Police Station we did not know that over 60 of our children were hauled out of their class rooms for non-payment of school fees and detained in two different rooms. They were deprived from attending classes the entire day. Retired Major General Kamal Gunaratne who usually occupies the branch office at Havelock Park, visited the Nugegoda Branch with 10 private security guards all dressed in black outfits. They looked more like mercenaries and bouncers that are usually used at night clubs. When we were informed about it we dialed 119 and complained to the Police Service. We did not know that the war veteran Gunaratne’s brother himself was the Director of 119 services. A Police bike visited the school and went away. They did nothing to heed our call of plea. We then made an entry in the crimes against Women and Children branch of the Mirihana Police Station. Shortly thereafter over 15 children who were subjected to this cruel torture of incarceration visited the Police Station and provided statements regarding the cruelty meted out to them that day. Also around 14 parents filed entries with the Police regarding this matter”.
Most parents are of the opinion that it is incorrect of the school to recruit a war veteran to conduct a civilian role as such as this, especially in the corporate school sector when dealing with kids. Some feel that especially after a prolonged war that the war veteran served in, he ought to be sent for counseling to undo the mental trauma he himself has faced.
“These are our own Sinhala kids that he is harassing in this manner. They are not LTTE terrorist child brigade soldiers. This is a school and he has now made this his own battle ground. He must wake up. The war is over. It is almost ten years since it ended. His crimes committed during the final stages of the war must be definitely investigated, because if he is behaving like this now, I can imagine how he must have behaved during the last stages of the war” another parent said.

Entries made by parents with the Mirihana Police Station regarding the Royal Institutes’ incarceration of their children for non payment of school fees in October 2018
Earlier in December 2016 the Retired Major General Gunaratne was also in the news for assaulting a child from D.S. Senanayake College in full public view. The student subsequently filed an entry at the Cinnamon Gardens Police Station bearing number CIB2-345/154 where he went onto state that Retired Major General Kamal Gunaratne had held him by his neck and assaulted him and also said, “Do you know who I am? I will break your bones”
The crisis faced by parents of children at Royal Institute is enormous. They have got no one to turn too. The Ministry of Education when contacted by them state the Royal Institute is an International School and does not come under their purview. Others say that even though it is an international school it is in fact a private business run by its businessman / Chairman G.T. Bandara. They also cannot turn to the Law Enforcement Authorities, as the Police Station that comes under the school’s jurisdiction in Nugegoda at Mirihana is manned by the Retired Major General Kamal Gunaratne’s brother, who incidentally is a high ranking Police Officer attached there.
Meanwhile two parents speaking to Colombo Telegraph voiced their displeasure as they were forced to remove their children from Royal Institute. This is for the delay in making school fees payment for the current term January to April 2019, which incidentally in yet in progress. (By Janaka Ranaweera)

This BP Kamal Gunaratne is not a war veteran but a man who hs now been cleaning the underpants of Rajapakshes family. For this bugger, anyone even today’s soldiers are war heros.
THe kind BPs would never leave respect of Army. Nor would they leave it as srilankens. These men are like ones that abuse tsunami disaster and got their house built by foreign aids on the west coast of the country. That was good enough them yet today, to go after tourists and claim funds. Shameless sinhalayas. I hate them for ever for this nature.
.
This man has become laughing stock to his colleagues today, but the darling to Rajaakshe family had the audacity and sangfroid to bring his biography prior to then Army commander today’s FIELD Marshal Sarath Fonseka. SF has not yet brought any kind of biography. See, that is one of the best examples to show – how some guys abuse the war and calling themselves as heroes.
These men would never become heroes of this nation, as much as they loud about that.

SRILANKA WITH A PRIDE OF 2500 YRS SO CALLED HERITAGE AND SCHOOL EDUCATION
From what we hear today, school management in general has gone to all appalling levels throughout the country, in particular, principals and teachers being failed to handle those institutions properly. Antediluvian ideas of some principals/teachers have influenced number of students to even commit suicide. The uncouth language that is being used by some politicians have absorbed to day today language of the country. Just imagine, how low and abusive their commenting language to the you tube video has become to date. Even females shamelessly seem to be using the very same language -unlike those days (3 decades ago) in the country.
–
What I was compelled to watch yesterday was a story of a young and poor mother, whose daughter was reported to have committed suicide already 5 years ago following antediluvian public harassment of her principal in their school assembly.
–
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iipnkSnD1K0&t=144s
–
To everyone’s surprise, the principal has succeeded the case which had been filed against him on the suicide. Media and all had then made the mother and family’s total ignorance as the ground child to have taken her life. However, today the young mother has come forward to reveal the untold story of the incident. In between very same principal has reinstated as the head of the same school and speculations are in air that principal has not adjusted himself a smidgen of his way of harassments. This mother warns further, that she would not want any other innocent child to fate what her own child faced 5 years ago.
–
It seems there is total ignorance of responsible institutions such as child protection authority not having the courage to save children in this country. Be it in education or other areas, people’s reactions to be caught by snail moves is so pathetic to the eyes of masses.

You know what ?? This pig headed parents and children hell with them.
Others children , children of the world known as innocent souls and treated as such. They’re immature , reared and bullied by the parents too.
Because they have no voice.
But Using the description Of their own precious innocent children have shown the world how unintelligent , pig headed parents are these.
They may have power and wealth but haven’t got the decency of good parents as they have compared the war time children how they were slaughtered by these war lords was OK for these wicked parents.
That’s why one believes in God , feel sorry for the UNFORTUNATE KIDS WHO HAD COLOMBO TELEGRAPH TO EXPOSE THEIR PIG HEADEDNESS.
THE kids and parents had no chance to complain in the war time savagery , unlike these parents had CT to expose because the police chief was so and so to this war hero predator licensed to bully you parents and your children at the Royal Institute.
They say What you sow that you Reap.
I’m not asking you to become Lord Buddha to turn your cheeks but atleast think of the unfortunate number of children and women who were raped and slaughtered Inhumanely which is unacceptable internationally .

SAD PEOPLE THINK OF OTHERS TOO.

WELL KARMA IS A BITCH COMES IN MANY SHAPES ,SIZES, AND FORMS..
Deal with it now with your ill earned wealth ,and power, then you’ll know how others too how they lost their loved ones.
Think Humanity. Yes , it appears that you and your children have been caught up with a war monster, I’m Sorry , but so too It’s Time to reflect how the minority children suffered and still suffering in the hands of these monsters.

“The Ministry of Education when contacted by them state the Royal Institute is an International School and does not come under their purview”
–
I think it is time that all INTERNATION SCHOOLS should come under control of Ministry of Education. Not just ROYAL INSTITUTE, there are many other International Schools that increase fees as they like. If any parents challenge that, they ask to look for another school knowing that no parents want to disrupt the education of their kids.
–
While most of these schools charge exorbitance from parents, they often employ unqualified teachers for peanut salaries. There are many valid reasons why parents go for these schools, not just because they are rich. They go for English education, less paper works when enrolling, nearness to residence etc.

@Simon De Silva – though I am a Tamil, I respect SF. But all in all Sri Lanka will never see another soldier like Gen. Kobekaduwe. I heard through people who lived in Jaffna while he was commanding the army in Jaffna, even the LTTE respected him. LTTE had a man by the name Raheem, he had great respect for Gen. K as both Raheem and the Gen., were old Trinitians. All this war and bloodshed………….some nasty bastards in the government and others profited while rural Sinhala and Tamils boys and girls died thinking they were fighting for a cause. So sad, I personally have spoken to soldiers and some were so young, I was wondering what they were doing in the army getting themselves killed, then it was no different to the LTTE boys and girls many were forcibly conscripted by VP to fight for his dream.

R.I. has been in existence for a considerable period and seemed well run. There was good amity between.parents, teachers and management whilst also.producing good results at the examinations.
Sometimes wrong person/s at the wrong place could create these disturbances and hope management would react to the parents woes and create back the peaceful atmosphere which existed at RI.

Arrogance of the retired army man in this school is like the proverbial ‘Bull in the China shop’. This is a typical case of abuse aimed at the poor parents of this private school operating for more than three decades. It is clearly visible that the Chairman Mr.Bandara seems helpless in managing the day to day administration of this school smoothly. We can sense that there may be other critical issues that is detrimental to operate the school efficiently. But this is a great blunder for the school administration to appoint a military uniformed man in the senior post looks inappropriate. Resorting to unethical police intervention to penalize the parents is an unpardonable crime that would tarnish the good name this prestigious school in the long run. In recent times there were worrying issues cropped up in the other private international schools operating in Sri Lanka and the minister of education suggested to monitor such schools periodically to ensure proper management of such schools. But million dollar question would be who will bell the cat? to put the house in order.

A similar incident happened at RIC Colombo where they extorted fees from me for a subject, without providing a suited lecturer. Upon complaining to the University regarding my problem, they bring out a past student to crash course the module, just 3 months into the final exam. This, as you imagine, is an excruciating experience for any student even if it’s a repeat subject. I explained myself once again to the University regarding this traumatising “solution” and Prof (highly doubt it given the gutter low ethical standard) Sarath Amunugama the Chairman told he wanted to meet me. He intimidated me saying that they at a loss, they had provided a lecturer regardless it being three months to the final exam and threatened to prohibit me from attending their convocation and also seeked to take legal action against me. I had to painfully mute myself and bow down to tyranny because it was my mother’s dream to see me graduate. This place is a truly harrowing experience and I don’t plan to study any further because of the fear of coming across another RIC. Please think twice before enrolling Royal Institute – a truly profit over education institute where they pay teachers and past student lecturers 20,000 LKR per month for a maximum margin. Their results are a fraud too because student go for external classes even at degree sections because their teaching is sub-par.

With high praises following 30 yrs. of Politics of Hon. Mangala Samaraweera, his comments elsewhere was:
“Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera has said that Gunaratne’s book published a day after he retired from the army last year provided “evidence” of war crimes committed by Sri Lankan forces while battling separatist Tamil Tigers.
The 741-page “Road to Nandikadal” was a catalogue of atrocities committed by government forces since early 1980s, Samaraweera had said. Setting fire to homes of Tamil civilians, killing innocent civilians and plundering valuables from homes under the guise of cordon-and-search operations have been listed by Gunaratne in minute detail.
The minister said the language used by Gunaratne also indicated that he derived pleasure from seeing the death and destruction around him, and in his own words he had admitted that as an officer, he did nothing to discipline soldiers under his command.
Gunaratne’s original army unit, the Rajarata Rifles, was disbanded for indiscipline and excesses, but Gunaratne himself escapes punishment according to his book and the unit emerges as the “mighty Gajaba Regiment.”
No wonder he qualified for the job – fortunately the location was not in the North/East

This is not something that happens only in the private sector or with war veteran heroes. It even happens in NGOs. Let’s take the case of His Excellency Jeyathevan Kaarththigeyan, who is the current Deputy Chief of Party at Global Communities. This organisation is funded by USAID and currently implementing a project on reconciliation. This thug Jayathevan has a history of intimidating people and is a strong supporter of the LTTE. He once openly boasted at a meeting that he had met Prabhakaran!

Dear Education Minister,
It is high time to establish a regulatory body for private educational institutions in the country

Dear Gunasekara,
.
Do you trust those bodies at all ? There are various kind of bodies and authorties whose existence is merely to the books. This is SRILANKA dominated by Rajapakshe supported Rascals.
I have no doubt, for the next 2 -3 decades, there will be no such human development that one could see as palpalble. This is the saddest reality about lanken affairs. Longer the media would protect and promote rascals, worst it will be regarding the progress of ethical values.

Being a student Of Ri senior section, We have been forced to pay May/June fees which is unfair for us as we are leaving school this year and sitting for our last exam in may/june…We have been trapped into this payment scheme so for parents who are looking forward to put there students in Ri i recommend no putting as their service is horrible.. Tution classes make us students perfect not the teachers in school however there are few teachers who are really good but due to salary reduction these teachers leave Ri…

The same sort of situation prevailed earlier, not simply limited to a school administration, but affecting an entire province when Major General G.A. Chandrasiri was appointed Governor of the Northern Province by Rajapaksa. And he was appointed to a second term too by that tyrant president!
It is extremely dangerous to appoint ex-military men to powerful or influential positions in the government or private sector because of their penchant for adopting an undemocratic and military attitude and generally behaving like bulls in a china shop. But what is the use? The government and even private institutions will keep repeating this mistake!

My dear Koshila you are quite right (why you use term ‘buggar’? – not nice for a lady eh?). GTB had his landmark moustach (we called it ‘whiskers of the kuruvi touch’). Did he teach Chemistry to you? (another fine teachers that comes to my mind are BSP Jayawaradane of Stafford fame, Hope Abeywardane of Pembroke fame, Ranjan De Silva the Chemistry Sir of Temple Lane Colombo 3 with Errol Fernando in English and Medagama Sir of Ananda College.

““These are our own Sinhala kids that he is harassing in this manner.”
So what about the Tamil kids? So anything can be done to the Tamil kids. People like you deserve him.
This very statement shows justification of General Kamal Gunaratne to be school’s Director of Administration. That school needs him and to inflict all the war crimes he inflicted on Tamils, to also do the same on the parents and their kids. We support his continuing presence and his actions. He has done a goods job.
