Sajith Tests The Waters

By Kumar David

Prof. Kumar David

Sajith and the SJB (S/S) made a correct judgement call. The proposition they put to the test was: ‘The unpopularity of the government has peaked; it is the right moment to start mobilisation’. The outcome was a success. The turnout on Galle Face Green (Brown?) was large despite efforts by the police to block attendance; the crowd was angry and mirrored the mood in the country at large; and rumours are afloat that Mahinda is sending feelers about a coalition between a Mahinda-Faction of the SLPP with some S/S-Faction. This last surely must be a fib. I cannot imagine S/S blundering at this time when the regime is in the pits and people have turned against the government wholesale. The logical S/S strategy would be to exploit this rage to the full, not to blunt it. Perhaps the rumour reflects memories of the 1964 ULF May Day leading to formation of a Coalition Government later that year. Let’s leave speculation aside – “what will be will be” – and focus on current trends.

The JVP missed the boat by not initiating a united front of trade unions and failing to launch a campaign for an anti-militarisation, anti-Gota “Save Democracy”, All-Party opposition united front. The price of sectarianism may turn out to be high. The JVP does not have as large an electoral base as S/S, which is the modern-day UNP, so it could not have pre-empted or replicated the S/S rally. Still, what is vital now is All-Opposition, multi-ethnic, multi-class, coordination. Complacency that the regime will not attempt military moves or not instigate anti-Muslim and anti-Catholic pogroms would be a mistake. The road ahead is long with twists and turns. What has to be done is to prepare to meet foreseeable and now unforeseeable eventualities.

“There are five musical notes yet their union creates melodies never heard. There are five primary colours that blended produce hues not seen. There are five cardinal tastes whose mix yields flavours not savoured in the past.” Sun Tzu in The Art of War, discussing tactical coordination among allies.

Here are seven basic notes, colours, tastes, or whatever you like to call them that a united-in-action opposition can blend together in the face of a collapsing pack of cards driven by rising prices and falling living standards.

* Defeat attempts at further militarisation and authoritarianism.

* Defend judicial independence and legal processes from added political interference.

* Ensure that the proposed constitution and pending elections conform to democratic norms.

* Halt ongoing persecution of Muslims and deception of Catholics re Easter bombings.

* Reverse Gotabaya’s daft fertiliser-faeces-fiasco.

* Terminate the conspiracy to sell-out the electricity supply industry in the guise of an LNG contract.

* Control Colombo Port City before the Rajapaksas make it another Hambantota-like disaster.

I am aware of issues on which the whole opposition can or will make common cause. The three most significant are: (a) A way out on the National Question and Territorial Devolution, (b) Left or Right orientation in economic policy, and (c) Wholesale repeal of the PTA. Furthermore, in the unlikely event S/S coddles up to Mahinda, standing askance and wagging a finger will gain no mileage. Only those who have made the effort to achieve opposition unity can, in this event, call out, “Treachery” with credibility. The Left must not miss the boat again. Anura Kumara has apologised on behalf of the JVP for the fanatical violence of 1988-89; that’s good. Now the JVP must take the next step of sharpening its strategic skills to win in the domain of democratic politics. The seven bullet points enumerated above are designed around democratic, not socialist, ideas. The Common Programme should be designed to be all-inclusive, not confined to socialites alone. True, the JVP’s long-term commitment is to a socialism (some readers may not like this, but that’s a different matter). Alliances, revolutions and genuine democracy in the JVP copybook are stepping stones towards substantive socialism.

I am of the view that the Single-Issue Common-Candidate strategy that I pioneered in 2013-14 and was adapted and used in January 2015 was correct beyond doubt. It achieved its objective of averting a Mahinda third-term dictatorship seven years ago. As it turned out the Common-Candidate was a coot, Pissu Sira. A price had to be paid for a big achievement. The JVP acted firmly and correctly in participating in that campaign; its conduct was free of sectarianism and ideologically exemplary. Likewise, if defeat of the Double-Paksa virus leads to a S/S government, well it is (sigh!) likely to be as ineffective as yahapalana (“they are the same old people”, to quote Gota for once). The Left knows all that, but first it must stall the virus before it becomes a pandemic.

It’s hard to play the political card to twist the power between both nationalistic parties that practice an internal dictatorship system within the party level, as a potential target group to protect the democratic governance.

SJB, JVP, SLPP, SLMC, TNA, and all other political parties have anti-democratic structures and I wonder how our pundits put forward their analysis.

This article also failed to address the strategic failure of, those who mastered behind, the 2015 yahapalanaya government.

By failing to propose a referendum to amend the executive presidency, these pundits expose their lack of preparedness during 2015. The same rhetoric being repeated by these pundits in the present circumstances and badly failed to show any objective analysis, other than emotional resistance of the stupidy of those in power and give toom to fill an alternative stupidy.

Not only have politicians and political parties failed the country for the last 70 years. But also the analysts who lack objective take and embraced of democratic spirit to foresee the real change are also part of the proble.

Our Constitution place the president and executive with superior power over that of the judiciary and the judiciary do not have a role to play in ensuring the constitutional values as such. Our constitutional values are nothing but the executive and legislators are supreme and the judiciary has no role to play and our immatured judiciary proudly accepts such subordination.

So, our political pundits calling for democratic practice by political parties and judiciary under this constitutional system is nothing but an unwise, immature statement.

Our political analysts were failed to say that we don’t have a party system that has internal democracy within, that can be mirrored into the governing system of the country once they are elected for power.

Without telling this bitter truth, our political pundits also fool citizens, similar to those politicians and undemocratic political parties.

Analyzing the cricket match and making comments on the winnability of the players and the teams that play on the ground is always within the agreed frame.

But the same way of analyzing the trends of the popularity of political parties and their rotation of power, without setting a democratic pitch, by political pundits will bring more harm than good to the country and citizens!

Only a government containing the following can drag this country out of the mess it’s in:
      R. Sampanthan (President)
      M.A. Sumanthiran (PM)
      Eran Wickramatatna (Finance)
      Anura K Dissanayaka (Agriculture)
Chanakyan, Harsha, Harin Fernando, Imtiaz Bakeer Markar, and a few more educated persons should make up the rest. But it’s not likely to happen, is it?

        old codger

I am sorry are you a secret admirer of Federal Party?
R Sambanthan is very old hence you may have to constantly present him with briefing notes.

M.A. Sumanthiran (PM) is to certain extend an effective Parliamentarian however a certain section of the home grown dumb and diaspora dumb asses keeps muck-raking, on a mission to self destruct, ……….. I am unable gauge what these dumb asses want from Tamil Politicians?

Eran Wickramatatna (Finance) I find him well informed, financially fluent, mostly talks sense. I have no idea if his hands are tainted.

Anura K Dissanayaka (Agriculture) I have no objection however he has to publicly apolagise for JVP’s past under racists Rohana and Somawansa. However he has to do a lot to reform JVP and kick the conservative – regressive old guards out of the party. If you talk to him he would not answer hard questions, such as war crimes, the legitimacy of democratization, Federal structure, devolution, …. JVP’s attempts to twin itself with Chinese Communists Party fortunately failed. He/JVP would not criticize China.

Harsha I doubt he is genuine, just before the 2015 elections, he reiterated he was a Sinhala/Buddhist hence he would not betray the armed forces.

I agree that R. Sampanthan is one of the most decent politicians whom we’ve had. However, are you aware of his age?

It is cruel to force people to work at that age. He s doing a good job, and yes, his knowledge of Sinhala is a huge plus. However, it is time for people like Shanikyan to move to centre stage.
            .
But what the hell are we talking about the Tamil leadership for? The real need is for bold and principled Sinhalese leaders. It is we who must educate people to actually turn up and vote intelligently. The chief offender was Sepal Amerasinghe.

I propose Sampanthan for President mostly because he looks like one, and practices traditional Tamil frugality. Sumanthiran is intelligent, and his appointment will mollify the UNHRC. As it turns out, the most intelligent MP’s are TNA members.

The Maveerar week falls between 21 November and 27 November every year since late 1990s, according to LTTE.

      You know that particular week includes 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27.
It so happened Velupillai Prabaharan’s birth day falls on 26th November.

Why did Prabaharan chose week starting from 21st to ending 27th to remember his fallen heroes, only LTTE members, not Mhendrarajah (Mathaya)?

This year it appears that they the LTTE Foreign Mafia (Agents) have started a new tradition, celebrating national flag on 21 st November.
      Why?
Will the local LTTE Mafia members force you to buy a horrible LTTE flag (Tiger, two guns, bullets) at an exorbitant price?

          “was Mahathaya a RAW agent?”

          Who was/is not?
Velupillai Prabaharan was the original agent. Up to a point he delivered more than what wanted/needed. But then VP with usual wisdom decided to work fro other masters. These are too complicated for me, hence I leave it to you, nimal fernando, ….. to decode and decipher the relationship between RAW, Tamil Groups, Gamani Disanayake, ……

          “But why Kalyani?”

Kalyani is the traditional-historical name for Kelani Ganga.

The LTTE flag is an eyesore.
I am sure the flag must have been designed by VP because it is ugly.
LTTE foreign Mafia needs to introduce new rituals in order to keep its contributors focused on VP. Its like Sinhala/Buddhist’s meaningless campaigns, for example Sinha-le (Lion’s Blood campaign).

Changing power from SLPP to SJB achieves nothing.

    Same old same old.

At least Tamils and Muslims should be allowed to have their own independent nations with own leaders. Surely they cannot be worse than Sinhala politicians since 1948.

Otherwise the whole thing goes down.

Very soon there will be a massive food crisis and food riots which will turn against ethnic groups. May be that will get people thinking there is no future for Sri Lanka the island nation.

This article of Prof Kum as a commentary is acceptable. Nevertheless, a country must think far. People sweat to chase away an inept government only to vote for another. The effort of the people is washed down the drain. Inside the apparent stupidity and incompetence hay is made while the sun shines. Owning a mansion in Wales, possessing agricultural land in Australia and owning 400 acres of Walnut in the US are some of the plums a politician gets for getting elected in Sri Lanka. Why call MY3 a coot now when the sole objective was to install any joker under the sun other than the then incumbent government? We now make hero of Sajith now but given the mantle we are the very ones who would decry all his shortcomings displayed thereafter. To many, the father RP was “the man”. But now there is video evidence how Wijeweera of sentenced to death from “Sucharitha” and cremated while he was struggling for his life. Politics of reality is just that. Chasing away a nincompoop is a very small objective. One must also promote a nationally accepted sense of values and decency in which the elected cannot escape from.

The situation has matured to a point when the government could collapse at any time now or could easily been overthrown.
If it falls without the opponents having any feasible plans to take it over and took it forward to a democratic and progressive future, it will only results in chaos all round resulting in a military take over with immense suffering all round.
    Is it what we want?.
The time has not arrived to go for the kill, because we are not ready!.
Any premature attempt will precipitate the crisis and a repeat of 2015 will surely follow.
Learn our lessons from the past
What is important is not the overthrow of the government, but What happens after defeating the government?.
A grand coalition of all progressive and democratic forces under a common programme is the sine quo non.
We must exercise great caution to ensure any destructive forces hijacking the entire movement and sabotage.
If at the end a stable national unity government with the active participation of all ethnic and religious groups to pursue a progressive agenda could be established ,it is worth waiting for!

Rajash is right. Lanka is a bankrupt in all fronts including political, economical, ethical, moral and many others. KD, those seven points you mentioned should have been addressed from the very beginning, (but not in Lanka) not when there is secondary gains for other parties, what is opportunistic politics and not real politics. This is how the country has been managed from the time of independence. If there are some benefits to opposition from such screwed up policies they may even go with those decisions. If issues were taken up from day one then may be, we would not have ended up in such economical mess (Hump bang thota, cricket stadium, porn /port city any many others could have been avoided). The result of such political opportunism is what Pissu Sira is.

The Title, ‘Sajith Tests The Waters’, is enough for me!
    .
Sajith is famous for testing the waters. He tested the waters under Ranil. The water was so muddy, he had a hard time breathing. He tested the national pond. He found it heavy swimming!
    .
In Sri Lanka you win only when you say out loud that you are a racist, not when you let others read that of you!

Sajith also has a family baggage to carry. Why not a clean start. The JVP points the way but people are yet to forget its origins. That is such a pity. But, for the present, the country has to see off the threat post by authoritarianism. Clearly, the appointment of the BBS thug to the one law fiasco is indicative of the strategy to revive Sinha Le politics. That is the only way to keep the Rajapakses in power. The yellow brigade may swing behind them. There are problems still in the way.

Sri lankan people are divided in terms of race, religion, language, political parties and easily manipulated with political dramas by opportunistic politicians and religious leaders. Still racism is powerful in determining politics. In few months time people may forget how Easter Bombing made people to turn towards Rajapaksas after chasing them out in 2015. Easter Bombing did not much impact on Buddhist Sinhala or Muslims because it did not affect directly. If a similar Bombing episode in a Prehara or Vesak may have a significant impact on majority which will go in favour of Rajapaksas. Rajapksas recent speech at the opening of “Sandahiru Seya at Anuradhapura is one of the aim get the support of Sinhalese. “The Prime Minister said that this “Sandahiru Seya” is dedicated to the war heroes who stopped the rivers of blood, eradicated the fear of death and made the country a sanctuary and he wishes that such incidents would never happen again in the future.
Further, no body knows why USA invited TNA lawyers to discuss Tamil problem who were blessed by Rajapaksas before they left to USA. Rajapaksas are capable of doing anything for power.

It’s called diplomatic signaling system to indicate the targeted government to understand what US capable of manipulating the political climate if the present government not corporate with them or alley with their arch enemies.

        Dayan,

This is not an abnormal reality of the world. All the powerful bodies do their diplomatic business to retain or gain more power.

When we know how the international order function, weak countries must know to adopt rule of law and good governance within and avoid state racism and promotion of ethnic tension inside the country and should build a peaceful environment for all citizens. and communities.

This should not be a one-short event. Can SJB keep the pressure on and get the people to continuously protest? Is Sajith cannot do this then within a short period of time SJB actions will fail.

Unfortunately even SJB does not keep major issues that have vanished from the new media in the forefront. They do not talk about Amunugama’s prison violations, Pandora Papers – no call to arrest Nirupama, Gnanasara’s appointment etc. This clearly shows there is no proper organized effort in the part of SJB to keep the oil boiling.

Sajith does not have the political stamina, stature or the vision to handle this volatile and precarious situation.
His leadership style will not stand the test. He is shamelessly power hungry. He lacks the selfless dedication to pull his team together and in addition, like the present leadership lacks the experience and insight into the subtleties of statesmanship.

He sounds hollow in his promises and proclamation of having found solutions to every current problem in the country.

The risk of the famous ”one man show” of the Premadasa era lurks in the background.

Keep your eyes on her intelligent (and pretty – hell, am I being sexist?) face while she listens.

Kumar David. Don’t you think we now NEED Angela Merkel of Germany? We have one in the OFFING and that is Dr. Harini Amarasuriya. Forget all those we “TESTED: and “TASED” so far.

Think of this Dr. Harini and start promoting her. That would be a “National Duty” by not only you but all the Pandits.

    • 2
      1

Yes, Harini’s credibility will be high because she was not in politics before, and is not from a political family. After she entered Parliament, I got her email address from a friend, wrote to her, and listed my phone numbers. She’s emailed brief genuine responses, but no phone calls. That’s all right. I don’t consider myself important.
      .
She will be the only serious female candidate. Many women will vote for her.
      .
In 2019 only one woman. Dr Ajantha Perera. I never took her seriously, but I had earlier met Nagannada Kodituwakku, and taken him fairly seriously. I attended their first Election Meeting, near Nelum Pokuna. I gave her a written request to educate the public on “strategic voting” by displaying number 1 instead of X against her name on posters, etc. but she didn’t comply. Longish discussions on both her home phone number, and her personal mobile number. See this:

I now know Professor Hoole very well. His elder brother became my classmate at STC, Gurutalawa in January 1963.

      Continuing . . .
      .
      This Ajantha is an academic
attached to the Colombo University, and has done grass-roots work on Environmental Issues. Was known as “The Garbage Queen”.
      .
After that chemicals ship sank, she made public statements. I called her (I have both numbers saved). We spoke on the phone, but it was all bluff on her part.
      .
As a politician, she’s a fake. Contested the Colombo District from Ranil’s UNP in August 2020. Preferences for that group not counted, although the votes for the District contributed to Ranil getting into Parliament.
      .
As for asking Kumar to get Harini nominated, he doesn’t control the NPP. Please scroll up to what is now displayed as the 13th comment on this page. There I have linked you to a recent interview with Sunil Handunnetti. He explains there the role of Secretary of the JVP, Tilvin Silva. I met Tilvin at a pocket meeting in Bandarawela; about ten years ago, I met Handunnetti in his then residence in Nugagaha Place, Maharagama, which even now serves as the Colombo District JVP Office. Tilvin, Handunnetti, Kumar David – all genuine people whom I have met.

        Mr SM,
You may be right about Sepal.
        .
Sepal and Sudda are criticising all together. Okkoma 225 (all 225) are no good candidates to them yet today. It is very unfair to repeat statements of that nature again and again.
May also be possible that they are given an agenda to please JVPrs and let them free fall when nearing the elections. That was the case also prior to last election. Even Prof. KD predicted that JVP would achieve more than 5 seats in the parliament. But the outcome was falling even deeper.
        :
It is too early to draw conclusions on these men.
        :
SRILANKA and ITS MEDIA are like ” wanathamulla kunukanda – Wanathamulla garbage dumps”. Stinky but its further existence is indispensible to the people in that area. Perhaps we would not be able to even pass through the area. So what is the point of our repeats ?

I think that Kumar gave his optimistic prediction as 15 seats, but he would settle even for the 6 that they got in 2015.
          .
I haven’t checked before writing that, but even if that’s not exactly right he won’t be mad at me because it won’t be wildly inaccurate. Exchanging comments with some, he got angry when some said that Kumar had said NPP would win.
          .
In the event they got only three, which I’m putting in here because Sepal succeeded so well in causing indifference that many people will not know even that.
          .
Life will end not with a bang but a whimper.

      Simon Aiya,
      .
Angela Merkel was cherrypicked by former BUDESKANZLER Dr Kohl.

And dont forget it is no right to compare our voters with that of voters in EU countries. Our voters in general would change their mind for a rice packet or a packet of condoms.

Political masturbation of Rajapkashe siblings should be made very clear to the voters in SL. No sympathy should be given to Mahinda Rajapkashe and his low level public statements. I have no respect to this guy from the begining on. Srilanka media is very careful about any news being spread against him yet today. THat should be changed for the good of people. If not today when ?

“Anura Kumara has apologised on behalf of the JVP for the fanatical violence of 1988-89”

How many Sri Lankans who lived through the horrors and terror-filled days of 1988-89 are aware that AK made such an apology ?
How was it delivered ? Sotto voce ? Was it a quick mumble with his hand covering his mouth ?
Or was it a full-throated open-faced delivery, in a tremulous voice filled with regret, pain, remorse and contrition ?
Did the message reach the lumpenproletariat or was it confined to the bourgeoisie ?

When AKD contested the 2019 Presidential Elections, the massive JVP rally at the Galle Face Green on 18 August 2019 stunned everybody.

Yet, at the Elections, the formidable JVP candidate could only collect a mere 418,553 (3.16%) of the total polled.

Crowd sizes do not necessarily translate into votes.

    Dear Kemo Sabey,
    .
    Please take me seriously,
because I’m taking you seriously. If you want to check the veracity of anything that I’m saying, please ask, either here, or when you see a future comment by me (check username, and gravatar, but I also often give my real name, as you see in what is still the 13th comment, but may become the 14th, since I intend responding to “old codger” whose real identity I don’t know, but have learnt to trust because of his consistency.)
    .
I’m now 73 years old, and I intend voting for the NPP (of which the JVP is easily the most powerful constituent) for the rest of my life – barring huge and unexpected changes. i.e. “Insha Allah!”
    .
In 1998-89, I was teaching in Oman; that’s how I know “Insha Allah!” Useful expression!
    .
I have heard, on Youtube, AKD clearly saying that their party has made serious mistakes in the past. That is enough apology for me. Since it was in Sinhala, it has obviously been heard and understood by “prols”. Listen carefully to what Handunnetti says above. It may not satisfy you.
    .
You may be asking too much.

This is the third comment that I’m posting here in a row. Two have yet to appear. I’ve said that I met Handunnetti ten years ago. Reasons? Now irrelevant (if asked, I will explain). Looking back, I realise that his response was honest.
    .
    Kemo,
if I start piling details, I’ll become a pain to everybody. After posting the above, I saw a new “article” and made a comment there. Followed various links that took me to the horrible murder of Mr Bala Gunesekeram and his wife on October 20th 1989. He was Headmaster, STC, Gurutalawa. It was “the JVP killing period”. But this was not them. I had met Bala in August; he told me that he knew it was too dangerous a job for me owing to my little kids. In September he presented my papers to the Board of Governors, for me to head STC, Mt Lavina. It didn’t happen.
    .
This is the article on which I made a comment:
    .
    https://www.colombotelegraph.com/index.php/christs-love-moves-the-world-to-solidarity-healing-reconciliation-unity/
    .
I think that you’ll see it in a few hours, but how can I tell if it will be moderated out?
    .
At some point we have to start trusting others!
