Sarath Fonseka – Dreaded By The Rajapaksa & Feared By Everyone Else

By Vishwamithra

“When it is obvious that the goals cannot be reached, don’t adjust the goals, adjust the action steps.” ~ Confucius

There was so much of hope, at least amongst the ordinary folks, that Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka would be appointed as Minister of Law and Order. The logic behind such hope is quite legitimate and sound. Sarath Fonseka, when he was the Commander of Sri Lanka Army, delivered the goods. Fighting against one of the most dreaded terrorist armies in the world, Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elam (LTTE) and its charismatic leader Prabhakaran, Sarath Fonseka not only exhibited raw gallantry and bravery, he displayed his acute knowledge about modern-day terrorist warfare and strategic battling on the field. He never sent his men and women where he couldn’t go himself, a characteristic of a charismatic leader. He may be detested by the Tamil Diaspora. He is certainly feared by our politicians, amongst whom are the Rajapaksas who were quite comfortable to give orders from their air-conditioned rooms in Colombo.

Fonseka

Battlefield experience is a rare quality. Those who gather such experience, especially as battle field commanders are even rarer. That is why all over the world, those who excel as winning commanders end up capturing most lucrative civilian jobs in any administration. Whether it’s in the democratic West or any other administration in the ‘Socialist’ world, Russia or China, such men and women end up occupying very commanding positions in the civilian managements of governing affairs. As far as Sarath Fonseka is concerned, he seems to be in a unique position in that, he was dreaded by the Rajapaksas and went after his blood in no uncertain manner. The current leaders of the government, whose original election pledge on election platforms was to expose the Rajapaksas and bring about law and order to a society so corrupt and placid, seem to be fearful of Fonseka’s ability to just that- elimination of corruption and bringing a sense of sensibility and order.

The recent eruption of ethnic violence and racial mayhem in Kandy district cannot be disregarded as a minor clash between two clans. Minimizing a looming danger is a trait of a coward. For he or she thinks that such treatment would place him or her in a comfort zone within which they feel quite secure and safe. Such men and women do not dare. They don’t venture outside the proverbial ‘box’, the comfort zone. The current government seems to be glued to that comfort zone. Sri Lanka’s post-Independence history has known only a very few leaders who dared to venture outside the box/comfort-zone. Such men changed the course of the nation’s journey. Whether that change of course was for the good or bad is a different argument altogether. Future historians will pass judgment on them. Yet such change of course, if initiated in a timely manner, by credible leaders whose daring and idealism were more precious to them than political expediency, could shape and define the character of a nation which would embrace such a character as an alternate personality. However, if this alternate personality of a nation is to be sustained for a calculable time of its journey, a great process of education and information, independent of political ideology, needs to take place. That process will not happen overnight nor would it occur as a matter of course. It needs to be deliberately engineered and monitored from a center.

That is precisely where a fully focused mind like that of Sarath Fonseka comes to play. Great devotion to the task at hand and unimpeachable commitment to the end-goal is a prerequisite for any candidate to be responsible for handling the Ministry of Law and Order. That dedication and commitment is not forthcoming from any personality in Parliament today except from Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka. Any person in my personal opinion, who could offer some competition in the sphere of commitment to a task and being focused, is Navin Dissanayake, the Minister of Plantation Industries and elder son of the late Gamini Dissanayake.

Such men with a sense of urgency and undeterred sense of results-orientation are few and far between. It is even more so in post-Independent Sri Lanka. That is another tragic feature of our storied nation’s history. Reverting to the current context, the recent turmoil in Kandy district and its assumption of racial tones coupled with the prelates of Maha Sanga being silent on the initial involvement of the likes of Galagoda Atte Gnanasara and other thugs in saffron robes, have aroused the appetite of tour global partners to warn their citizens to be more discerning when travelling to Sri Lanka. This consistent process of intended or unintended intervention into our internal affairs under the facade of human rights will continue. The dishonorable genocide committed in 1983 is still fresh in the human rights-activists world over.

A totally different mindset is necessary in the present set of circumstances. A mind that is bold, a mind that is not scared and a one that is fundamentally results-oriented and unrelenting is the need of the hour. If Sarath Fonseka is that mind, why is everyone scared of him? A soldier who nearly sacrificed his life during the war with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elam (LTTE), a Presidential Candidate who dared challenge the Rajapaksas in the 2009 Presidential Elections, almost single-handedly with lukewarm assistance from the Unite National Party (UNP), cannot be discarded as an unwelcome guest?

The problem lies there; the issue with Fonseka is that no one in the other political parties could come anywhere near his achievements. A singular sense of envy and fear has overwhelmed our Sinhalese politicians. One can understand the fear and dread that stems from the Rajapaksas for Sarath Fonseka; but the fear and jealousy others seem to have is unpardonable. Fonseka’s capabilities are beyond question. As at now, he is rotting away in a Ministry that has no portfolios. It is a travesty of national proportions. The writer does not to intend to belittle Ranjit Madduama Bandara who has just been sworn in as Minister of Law and Order. But to compare the two, Fonseka and Madduama Bandara is not fair by both of them.

The current government has failed miserably on the very platform that they were elected to office on. The unmitigated condition of bringing justice to those who played out the coffers of the treasury and conducted crude and inhuman acts of violence and viciousness towards those who protested against their regime is still not fulfilled. It is that condition the majority of the country wanted satisfied. The majority of the people in the country know that Sarath Fonseka, more than anyone else in the current administration, is the person who is qualified to undertake that brutally honest task. Then why not ask him to do that? If the Rajapaksas come out clean after swift and justly concluded inquiries, then that is also alright. But dragging these inquiries without any end on the horizon only strengthens the Rajapaksas and weakens the government’s hand. On the other hand, a wakened hand at the beginning of the inquiries has further eroded the confidence of those who are eagerly looking forward to a rapid finish to the nagging questions that surround the last regime. Obviously the untoward laziness which was displayed by the government-led inquiring officers and those who matter in the Department of Attorney General during the last two and half years definitely was factored in by a sizeable majority of the voters in the local government elections and the results confirmed that.

The context is very clear. It is as crisp and unambiguous as crystal. Within that vast yet well-defined context, rejection of Sarath Fonseka’s name for the Ministry of Law and Order is unfathomable. Our politicians have not learnt to sacrifice their personal agendas for the good of the country. Nor have they learnt the fine art of negotiation- a craft that is essentially having a bind and abiding attachment to detach oneself from the immediate advance or retreat. Such nuanced politicking has lost its way. One can understand if those who reject Sarath Fonseka are uneducated nincompoops. But when such opposition stems from the educated quarters, it’s quite evident that something more than a calculated gamble is at stake.

Once again, it may be redundant to emphasize the significance of seeing finality to the inquiries against the Rajapaksas and their cohorts. It may also be redundant to say that no one other than Sarath Fonseka in the current government has the curriculum vitae to take over such a job and produce results. The erosion of Sinhalese Buddhist votes from the UNP is evident. Election after election has shown that an overdependence on the Tamils and Muslims might backfire to such an extent, the net UNP votes might reduce to an abysmal few. The increasing numbers of independent voters who are not attached to any political party yet matter most, when elections are held, would undoubtedly go away for the UNP and seek refuge elsewhere. The writer is not of the opinion that Prime Minister would like to share the inglorious distinction with President, of presiding over the disintegration of his party during his leadership.

There is a conspiracy going on to paint the picture in favour of Rajapakshe and disadvantageous of Sarath F these days.

It is all about the mischivous murder of Lasantha W then editor of SLeader News PAPERs.
The buggers are so abusive to put in the air that SF was complicent of having killed LW.
And earlier even PM and Lasantha s brother had added their thoughts allegations levelling at SF, but now all is becoming clear GOTA and those men of Rajapakshe brutal family was the ones who took the life of great EDITOR, by the allegations leveled at SF, they are going to block him from becoming the LAW and Order minister.
So now LW s case should be subjected to court hearing wihtout stop. Then we can see, who is the real killer, then SF s name would also have been made clear.
Then they can appoint him at least in 6 months him as the minister of Law and order.
That way the spineless President should go through, not leaving any space to Thakkadi Rajapakshes becoming next men. We are so fed up of Rajapkashe thakkkadiyas.. we want to see them marching to LANKEN jails sooner than later

Spot on! It is shame that the President is cowardly about this appointment.

Cowardly is correct. A reason adduced is most demeaning. Senior DIGs fearing reprisals from SF. Do they so much as have the authority to share governance responsibility with the President? If they have wounds on their backs and fear to creep under the jungle, should the President expose himself to attack?

Thanks for the write -up. You hit the nail on the head -find exactly the right answer.

    Let’s have a people’s rally to:

    1. Make or Appoint Field Marshall Sarath Fonseka, the Law and Order Minister.

    2. To impeach Sirisena, aka the Traitor, Sevalaya and Perethaya to the 6.2 million who voted for him,

We need nothing else at this moment just ” law and order” . Die hard Sarath Fonseka is the only man to finish the job and to get all the corrupt politicians and thugs behind bars.

RW and MS fear him as much as MR does, but for a different reason.

SF would have shown the country what a pair of dishonest nincompoops they are.

It is not too hard to see even with SF doing nothing. But just imagine he was really allowed to do something.

I am not a fan of RW or MS, but even they know that, to have a megalomaniac like Kalawedda ( as fondly known to everyone) at the helm as President is not only a danger for them, but also for the entire nation. Anyone proposing him even to be appointed to a governmental position let alone to the position of Executive President in the country must be suffering from mental and psychiatric disorders.

In the same token let me also reiterate that if these 2 jokers MS and RW remain in power for the next few months, we may not have a country that we can proudly call our own.

This is an account on paucity of talent within UNP and SLFP ranks. No where I have come across such an emphatic denunciation of Yahapalana outfit. If the defeated candidate was not appointed by RW we would not have a man to be appointed for the job.

Congratulations on your outstanding contribution. The gnawing issue haunting the government and the country has been treated with absolute levity to bring certain ruin upon the people. V has minced no words in condemning the blunder. Alongside, without rambling about the one and only personage ( FM; SF) appropriate for the mantle is correctly mentioned and exalted.

People who voted for Pohottuwa were wondering how is his battle field experience going to save the Bond scammers. How is he going to arrest Gotabaya and leave out Ranil. He may be tit for tat for a terrorist outfit. But interfering in the law and order process of a country is a different ball game. I never thought Vishvamitra is such a fool.

If Fonseka is so capable why won’t you tell your friends in Yahapalana to appoint him to catch Arjuna Mahendran and bring him to SL? Mahendran is a fugitive from justice. Of course RW will do his best to prevent that.

vishvamithra: YOur article is very good. but, you made some statements which are very wrong. Note most of uneducated politicians are threatened by any educated or other politicians who have acheivemd something. both the president and PM may have 40-50 years political experience. But both are very insecure. Because, they know they do not have anything to show. On the other hand, when the PM and PResident lived in the parliament for decades, they cannot be saints. they all have closets which are filled with secrets. So, They do not want to give away those secrets, as soon as any rajapakses are arrested thy in turn expos the present govt. Even without that, They do not want Sarath fonskea to be more popular than them. Sri lankan political system of selecting politicians is not democractic. IT is supporting the families and seniority.NAvin dissanayake has lot of hidden wealth. Besides, he tried to cheat $ 60,000 or more from the Ministery of Plantations recently. that showed who he is and what he is. YOu are not a buddhist. and you can not even be Hindu. that is why You disparage Galagoda Atthe Ghanasara. Remember Rohingya problem, from Arakhan muslims, is west made. Bhikku virathu may be accused wrongly. what I heard the present anti-muslims violence is INGO originated. for what reason is not known. Even the ppast during the LTTE times, INGOs had done similar things. Anyway, Every politicians, SLFP, Pohottuwa, UNP and Muslim politicians all used it for their advantage. Why not. It is two sinhala people died. USe it in the UNHCR, govt should have rebuttles.

Remember, Ranjith Madduma Bandara is one who had been an accused in the courts. but, politicians know how to delay the court case, how to transfer the court case to the desired judge, how to stay in the prison hospital, hide or destroy the evidence, change the legislation to make them acquitted and all those. So the present LAw and order is one who had accusations agains thim as a thug and cutting trees. Itis the politicians who wanted political milage as well as to clear the name of UNP who wanted it. but, Ranil does not want. All prominent politicians have stolen money and deposited all aroppund the world. those money is registed in island banks,. but money is the so called developed countries. Middle east is naother destination. I heard at least one African country says we do not have money and we can give cattled for that. Understand it as there are some MPs who want to run the parliament as a respectable place but those who are used to theft, they can not do it. That will ruin them.

Arjun Mahendran had worked to all three promenent politicians today. It says, he used to take $ 3 billion suit caes over seas. those should be in NEw york, Germany and some other places too.He was not the only person who did it. that is a long story. the bottom line is all three engaged in it. So, all are playing a Chess game and to make voters forget it. One Vandu knows every thing.

While I cannot but agree with the logic and thrust of your presentation, Vishwamitra, I believe that Fonseka’s is not the perfect curriculum vitae: he DOES have a track record of active collaboration with MR & GR at the height of their power when they did as they pleased and the matter of his alleged involvement in the execution of Lasantha Wickremetunge has never been completely resolved.
Also, I would draw the line at the praise you have heaped on Navin Dissanayake. This, like Karu Jayasuriya, is a man who assisted the Mahinda Rajapaksa horde and helped build it into a juggernaut that devastated human rights and the rule of law in this country. That is an inalienable fact. His bringing various buddies of his father out of retirement to serve as his lackeys after they had performed the same service for MR, speaks for itself.
There is no getting away from the urgency of getting back to the rule of law and basic democratic practice in the governance of Sri Lanka and Sarath Fonseka with an appropriately tight rein on him (if that is possible!) could well be the man of the hour.
If you wish to continue this discussion, I believe you already have my email address.

      Emil van der Poorten

Navin Dissanayake has a few things to sort out.

J R accused his father the then Mahaweli Development Minister of being the richest man in Asia. His father Dutta Gamani was accused of burning down the Jaffna Library for which he was never charged nor punished. Lot of books maybe old ola manuscript were brought to the South. While in the cabinet and outside Dutta Gamani continued to undermine Premadasa for being born in a different caste.

If Navin Dissanayake is a honourable person
He first needs to disassociate with his father’s past:
Apologize for stealing state coffer and return what his father accumulatee plus interest.

Apologize for the destruction of the Library and books and return all stolen books back to the people who really value them. Pay compensation for the destruction from what he inherited from his father.

I am not sure what got into his mind or his impulse to type a stupid letter to Joan Ryan MP in his Official letter head which bears his qualification gained in the UK. Did he think those UK qualifications would have brought the British Empire to its knees and justify the actions of super smart Brigadier, no one knows. Please revisit his letter to British MP Ryan in which he says the super smart Brigadier was within the premises of SL mission which is a blatant lie.

Perhaps he was trying to impress his partner with his stupid letter.

When you have clowns like him as Ministers crooked war criminals Rajapksas need not to worry.

After reading Vishwamithras well written my mind race back to what Late Major General and later the High Commissioner to Australia said to over 500 Sydney Sixers gathered to welcome him at Macquarie University by SCATS. He expressed his encounter with then President CBK to post him to Jaffna to save around 40,000 Defence Personals and the people in Jaffna from an eminent death as the penisuala was circled by LTTE. Kanaka requested President to allow Major General Sarath Fonseka to accompany him if President needs to save the brave soldiers and people in Jaffna. Then further he told from the time they landed in Palai Air Port, Sarath Fonseka took control of the situation, and took the command and save the soldiers as well as the people of Jaffna. To give this acolcade by Janaka who was not so happy with SF proves that he is a very brave man who can save the country from the present situation. If he is appointed as the Law & Order Minister those police officers objecting to his appointment will allow capable officers to take charge of the Law &Order work. I am of the opinion President Sirisena trying to save Gotabaya, due to some secret commitments is trustin people give him dead ropes.

Well said there is no politician in the country including the President or Past President who can match to Field Marshall Sarath Fonseka. Shame on the President for not appointing him as the Minister of Law and Order. This clearly shows that the President does not want to rogues and murderers caught. Sirisena took advice from Mahinda, may be the second serving of the Appa solved the differences. May be Mahinda has a file on Sirisena!

Many African armies win tribal wars. Can these warlords be considered good civilian leaders and crack administrators ? We must look at what happened in Sri Lanka objectively.

A 300,000 army defeated 8000 tigers who decided to fight a positional battle defending marked territory ( Not guerrilla war) against them .The battle took about 2 years. the army suffered large casualties. The LTTE was decimated. They had no international support and no easy access to weapons.

Was this a great military victory ? Or in the circumstances only inevitable.

From this event so many have made careers and eaten-MR, GR, senior army/intelligence officers and of course SF.

They look good only because what was before ( RW,Chandrika,Anurudha Ratwatta etc) were so pathetic. The army lost so many direct confrontations( not guerrilla). Even this time there were many failures, including the Anuradapura fiasco.

Until we put this thing in perspective, this nation will never mature.

If Fonseka is appointed Minister every woman in Sri Lanka will have to cover her blouse and every man will have to protect his backside!

    1. Simply the leadership you seek is a fast paced task oriented person. Examples . Gen Patton , Trump . Hilary Clinton , John Mc Enroee . ( people who dominte)

    2. The problem in Sri Lanka is because we want to be fast paced people oriented ( influencer ). Bill Clinton most were actors who succeeded . Has this worked .

    3. Then we have slow paced and people oriented . (suppotive or steady) like Jimmy Carter , Gandhi . Mother,Theresa . Where are Sri Lankan leaders

    4. At least we have to be to be slow paced but task oriented ( consciousness) .Which now is too late with only two years left. Bill Gates was successful in this type of leadership so was Kissinger and Einstein

    * Compare MR and the elections . Fast Paced Task Oriented with a mix of people oriented.

**. What is MS . Trying to be people oriented with no task in mind neither fast nor slow but disjointed .

**** RW . Slow and task oriented. This is what he has done with party . A little of people oriented will have helped .
#####. Try as he may he cannot be people oriented . He has to be task and now fast paced unlike party as SL is a instant coffee Maggie noodle society.

Sri Lanka has become so tragically bankrupt financially, morally, and politically under Yahapalana that all those idiots who blindly spruiked it, have no answer. They have closed their eyes on the biggest most abominable act of corruption committed by this Govt – the great central bank robbery and once again trying to pull wool over the eyes of the people. They are painting a man cashiered as dishonourable and unfit for the army as the apostle of virtue who can solve all Sri Lanka’s problems. Yet,there are buffoons and the intellectually maimed who believe it!!

SF is an excellent soldier and a military leader. No doubt. Rajapakses showed greater talent in identifying right team including SF for the job at hand and delivering it astounding the entire world. Whether Vishwamithra likes it or not Rajapakses are considered by people of this country along the same lines Churchill, Truman and Stalin are considered with respect to WW2. Transferring and adapting those military leadership skills to civilian administration requires immense maturity and emotional intelligence. SF still likes to wear military uniform at state functions with Idi Aminisq Field Marshal title. That alone provides a glimpse of his mindset. Contrast that with Gotabaya who was able to make a clear break from military life to a civilian administrator parting with all associated military symbolism (Gota could have easily given to himself any title he fancied like what Anuruddha Ratwatte did). I invite Vishwamithra to go back and listen to speeches of SF during the 2009/10 presidential election campaign. They were full of hate and venom. Had he won that election there would have been a bloodbath considering the anger he harboured. Such a person would only bring mayhem if given authority over tools of state violence. Furthermore SF doesn’t have a mandate to be even a MP. He was rejected by the voters of this country contrary to Vishwamithra’s wishful assertions. SF has been brought to parliament through the back door to do some small dirty work and not grave responsibilities such as law and order which he will mess up at a great cost to the govt and the country as a whole. Of course MR is on record saying that he is prepared to face SF as law and order minister even donning military fatigue………

SF could stand for presidency in 2020 with the un wavered promise that he will bring all the crooks including MS and MR to book, nationalize the loots the robbed from the people, prosecute all frauds, failure to deliver justice by judges and AG. No mercy should be shown. Think of people and people alone?

No worries guys…nothing is going to change things in shit lanka…
Sarath F will not get appointed. Madduma Bandara is their man to tackle…tackle what ?…really nothing !

Yes…both Sira and RW…they have their own stupid master plans..the Buddhist way plan to suppress the minority Muslims for now..because Tamils are already done with,,(Damn good job our war hero Ranawiruwos did it and we will safeguard them all from all international tribunals) we promised !
No one can touch us except may be China or India…because they have plans to share Lanka between them.
Who cares ? so long as they give us some percentage as commission !

Rajapaksas got commissions and so can we all !

Sarath F can upset our entire plan and that’s why we do not want him stopping all these riots and mayhem burnings and looting…
These are all just our Sinhala Buddhist’s national pastime events and why others get excited or worried ?
Just keep quiet and burn what ever you all can in the mean time..
We do not want Muslims or Tamils in Shit Lanka..

Vishwamithra! Who are these ‘ordinary folks’ that you have noted in your first sentence? Probably you meant: Shyamon Jayasinghe, you and a few bunch of men who believe in revenge, chaos, anarchy, instability, insanity, name calling (Kalavedda…)! And you call them ordinary folks! Call them greasy forks and spoons!
The real ordinary People have given their verdict at two major elections about Sarath Fonseka. He lost big time. why? he is a soldier; not a politician. people know that very well! If you don’t read Sinhala or Tamil, at least read the cartoons of Sri Lankan Dailies and you will get the picture.
It’s true he did a good job during the war but it doesn’t mean he is good for any office. Even during the war he didn’t make his own rules; he obeyed rules, regulations, and orders given by the Defence Secretary and the President. Don’t forget what he has said about minorities several years ago.

I beg to differ from a vast majority of persons expressing opinion in favor of appointing SF as the Minister of law & order. I have first-hand info of the guy and do not want to publish personal type of material in these comments. The nation cannot afford to experiment in giving the man the job on a trial basis. If the non-appointment is a real problem it is totally unfair to blame the President alone without ascertaining for certain what the views of the premier are. If hints are dropped that the premier wanted SF but not the President then my reaction is that such hints are misleaders because MY3 once expressed that his blue eyed boy DD from Anuradhapura to be the Minister. Though politicians fight among themselves in public and on the floor of the house, they are quite comfortable in sipping fruit juice together at weddings and other parties. (And perhaps dance “Yippi-Yippi-Yai”). My reliable information is that the choice of RMB as the minister is agreed upon by MY3-RW-MR combination.

He in not feared by everyone. Law abiding citizens of the country wants some one like him to bring in closure to the countless number of crimes committed during the last govt and covered under the banner of LTTE. Families are crying for justice.
