Should Ranil Stay Or Go?

Should Ranil Stay Or Go? Fable Of The Fox & Hedgehog

Should Ranil stay and face the motion of no confidence or avoid confrontation and go before it is taken up. The question was never an issue.  It is a media manufactured, media packaged, and a media distributed yarn – an irrelevant essential.

Ranil should stay and face the floor test. That is what democracy is all about. Democracy is not about a megalomaniac media magnate philandering unearned and undeserving monopoly access to airwaves, spewing venom on a politician that he has taken a dislike to.

On April 14th, 2017 – that is a year ago, I wrote an essay – Ranil – the man and his era. Some recap seems relevant.

‘Ranil’s political narrative begins in 1977 with his election to Parliament at age 28. His political path runs parallel to Sri Lanka’s triple lane highway to the Executive Presidency that is Market Liberalization, proportional representation and ethnoreligious identity politics.

A study of his political profile is a discovery of the compelling complexities of our era. It is a vicarious witnessing of our descent in to a cruel ethnic inferno, suppression of a Sothern insurrection with a state brutality that has few parallels in human history, a firsthand experience of political obscenity with the ‘Lampu Kalagedi ‘referendum, the near total collapse of the rule of law and lastly our discovery and realization for a return to political civility and good governance.’

Ranil has been the target of some ferocious pillorying by some electronic media outfits.

Despite his many failings, there are plenty, the manipulated witch hunt must be deplored.

A near monopoly of television broadcasting is not a free press. That it remains free from government censorship is not a free license to telecast brazen bias.

Democracy or its defense is not the exclusive preserve of self-declared media crusaders with double barrel monikers rhyming with ‘Barnabas’ sporting Larry King type ‘clip on suspenders’.

So, Ranil should stay and face the floor test. If it is a power struggle, the vote in parliament will bring some solidity to the current form of liquid politics.

Democracy is not about coming to parliament through the national list after being soundly and solidly beaten at the general election. Democracy is not about subverting popular will expressed at free and fair elections by reappointing political rejects purely to retrieve nonexistent credentials of an accidental upstart.

Democracy is not about media Moghuls leveraging their monopolies to manufacture and distribute packaged ‘public opinion’ .

The shadow boxing, we have witnessed between some SLFP minsters and the UNP high-ups is pure and classic political chicanery.

This writer is no supporter, follower, disciple or acolyte of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. This writer does not believe that Ranil Wickremesinghe is the kind of leader we need in these critical times.

That said, those of us, committed to the goals of the movement for a just society that brought about the triumph of 8th January 2015 should unhesitatingly prevent agenda driven media Moghuls from subverting the constitutional and democratic process. Removing an inconvenient  hurdle to their  business plans is not the right direction for this befuddled nation.

If defending the unsmiling, unresponsive, self-obsessed Ranil is the price we have to pay, we must not dilly dally or waver. We must pay the price.

The gains made in the last three years in the form of access to information, rights of the individual and the restoration of at least the semblances of institutions insulated from partisan politics should be preserved.

Those gains are far too important to be allowed to be hijacked by plastics potentates now in the television business, harboring delusions of  their power in the secure comfort of  hired hands  feeding their oversized egos.

We are told that the present crisis, if that is what it should be described as, is a power struggle. That is a mistaken diagnosis by those too involved in the dispute to claim comprehension of a problem that they do not yet understand.

The President was voted in to office by a rainbow coalition on a platform of reforms that produced an electoral activism of exceptional outreach.

The power he obtained was of such force and sanctity, that it allowed him to make Ranil Wickremesinghe Prime minister and spare him the pain of seeking a vote of confidence in a parliament where Ranil commanded some forty seats. The gains we now talk about are the gains made in the first hundred days.

What is unfolding today is not a struggle for power but a dichotomous search to locate where power resides. A good part of that power now resides with Mahinda Rajapakse!

Our principal institution of democratic governance – the parliament is pitilessly, massively dysfunctional. There is the official opposition of the Tamil National Alliance demanding minority empowerment and constitutional reforms. There is the JVP insisting that they are neither for Tweedledum nor Tweedle-dee but are for a type of Tweedled Dum Dees of their own.  Then there are the no holds barred but some holds less barred opposition that calls itself the Joint opposition. They want Mahinda Rajapakse back in power.

The government calls itself a national alliance of the two mainstream political parties the UNP and the SLFP. Its ostensible purpose being pursuit of  good governance, adherence to  democratic ideals and ensuring  economic progress.

The crisis precipitated by the motion of no confidence against the prime minister is an un mistakable sign that the present structure can no longer hold.

The explosion specially in electronic media, promoting not productive debate but destructive diversions is lamentable. Its purpose is to disengage us from reality.

We created an atmosphere of free debate, accommodating a diversity of views. We have achieved something that we never planned for.  We have opened the public space with no clear framework defining its public purpose.

Each of us wallow in the unaffordable luxury of self-confirmation at the expense of collective purpose and endeavor.

Time has arrived for us to stop and take stock of the gains and losses of the past three years. We have been duped and manipulated for more than a decade before we embarked on the good governance experiment on 8th January 2015. It is now more important than ever to know what we are doing to ourselves. Are we being duped some more?

We are in an endless spiral, in a vicious vortex asphyxiating with scripts and counter scripts of learned legalese before the judiciary, inane profundities from the executive and a limitless supply of senseless, pointless rhetoric from the legislature.

The story of the fox and the hedgehog has an explanation.

A fox swimming across a rapid river was carried by the force of the current into a very deep ravine. It remained exhausted and in terrible pain for a long time. It was very much bruised, sick, and paralyzed. It was unable to move. Swarms of hungry blood-sucking flies settled upon its tired body. A Hedgehog, passing by, saw its anguish and inquired if it should drive away the flies that were tormenting the fox. “By no means,” replied the Fox; “pray do not molest them.” “Why or why asked the bewildered Hedgehog; “do you not want to be rid of them?’ “No,” replied the Fox, “for these flies which you see are full of blood, and sting me but little, and if you rid me of these which are already satiated, others hungrier will come in their place, and will drink up all the blood I have left.”

People voted them into Power and the power hungry politicians in the Parliament has no right to remove the President or Prime Minister. Since they were voted in for a 5 year term and that should be allowed to continue. They have to get the People’s Mandate with regard to this change. After all these Politicians enjoy all the perks at the expense of the people of Sri Lanka. Hence, what I suggest is. if there is a problem they should go for the voters Mandate.

Kindly propose you to learn some Sri Lankan politics before making comments. It’s people elected MPs have come up with this no confidence motion.

Wrong, some of those who are proposing and some of them who are very vocal supporting the NCM are those who came into the Parliament through the “Pinata Seat” and not elected by the voters. Most of those who signed have cases pending against them as well.

          Buddhist

          Yes, but small number

However president & the PM are mainly responsible for having them as MPs through national list.

The strange thing is MR proposed the NCM but does not sign it. Further, he will not
be in Parliament on the 4th onwards as he has a more important appointment in
        USA / attending his relative’s alms-giving.

Did Mahinda or his brother murder the relative as well in order to avoid the Parliament on that day??

I quite agree with the comment of Harry. These gentlemen who are trying to throw about their weight will definitely learn a good lesson after the vote of NCM on the 4th. What we feel is Hon.PM should face it without fear.We must allow the voters to decide whether they want him or not at the next Gen election

Ranil should stay, Sirisena should go.

We need ones that give law and order a place above everything to be appointed as the leader of nation.

Sirisena is the person who stood on the way, not allow Sarath fonseka be the next LAW AND ORDER MINISTER.

We want all the RASCALSwhose files have been investigated by FCID to be investigated before long.

We want all Rajapakshes be away from lanken politics and our sights.

Im sure youre quite aware that there is a sizeable population in Srilanka who do not think so…
Also the law should not be applied to your whims and fancies..

This man should go. He can’t even stay awake for five minutes in a public gathering now. He has no energy. He drinks too much black coffee and his back door is always shut it seems. The man should retire in to a coconut estate near kalawewa he owns and spend his last days. Why is he so greedy. Does Simon J know?

We the minority’s will like Ranil to stay if he can be a “not too goody man to the Rajapaksa s and put all racists into the prisons and make Sri Lanka for all Muslims Chiristians Hindu s And the Buddists to stay in peace and harmony .All to have a right to earn their living fairly and in a free and democratic way. For that he must be of sterner stuff and first put the racists in jail. Will he do it .?

      Muslim,

Yes you people like Ranil because what he does is to appease minorities to secure his vote base. That will always agitate the majority Sinhalese community. In the same time you like to silence the people who speak out against the atrocities committed by the minorities specially Muslims under hate crimes so that you people can continue to undermine the society further for your own benefit. Unless until you minorities comes out of this minority mindset, this country will never see peace and harmony.

        3

        Shenal,

why dont you sense of the atrocities commited by those Rajapkashe rascals ?

They excised it not only with notherners but also with anyone that stood on their way ?

Example number one – Lasantha Wickramatunge
        Thadjudeen
        Ekanligoda, list goes on

Why on earth you buggers are compelled to think that we the sinhalayas should be treated above others. Why not enjoy same rights to all born to this island ?

So long you would stay thinking minorities and mjaority you will never win anywhere. you can only create a mess one behind the other.

We should all rally round to rebuild this nation starting from Kindergarten.
How would your young ones be able to see it ?
Be honest to you, then everything will be fine.

You guys are just puppets being caricatured by Rjapakshe extremists.

We should destroy extremism of all forms not allow them to rise them up.

This we can do ONLY after we stand collectively against Rajaakshe Racism promoters.
Truths will succeed if not today tomorrow, Jaya niyathayi.

          Hatharabirikatharina,

One needs to view the atrocities committed by the Rajapakshas’ and Ranil W with balanced mindset. From that we can deduce Rajapakshas’ have done lesser atrocities than Ranil W. That is why we favor Rajapaksha.

The same theory should be applied to money grabs deliberately made by Rajpakshe and RW.

If you would please see it closely.
Rajapakshe rascals looted as nothing further can be the case.

As I read somewhere, it is like 11 billions – but this some is not lost
But the 4000 billions that Rajapakshe men have let looted are just not even in discussions.
There are 34 files that have already been fianlized by FCID, none of these are in press today.
Lanken media is BIASED and caricatured by Rajapakshe supporters.
This will come to light next days.
Sirisa focusES On RW but in the same time, they keep in quiet in terms of higher sums taken away by Rajapakshes.
            Why this much doublestandards ?

Just because his term earned terrror eleimination not by his magical powers however collectivity succieeded it…
However, people including you have been brainwashed as if you would even let Rajapakshes to RAPE you on broad day light… why is that ?

            ARE PEOPLE THAT STUPID ?

              Hatharabirikatharina,

Ranil W is at the pinnacle with his hand in the bond scam case. Besides, is money the only criteria of yours on selecting the leaders of the country? God bless you then.

//As I read somewhere, it is like 11 billions – but this some is not lost
But the 4000 billions that Rajapakshe men have let looted are just not even in discussions.//

Yes you have read in some gutter press or heard from a gossip girl. That doesn’t prove MR a criminal. People can come up with what ever allegations they seems fit. How can we judge it to be true? This government came to power claiming they can unearth how Rajapaksha’s looted this country. They even promised to develop the country just by stopping Rajapaksha’s unethical spending spree. Have any of this came to fruition?

//There are 34 files that have already been fianlized by FCID, none of these are in press today.//

Any one can file a complain in FCID. That doesn’t mean the complain has any judicial or legal value.

//Lanken media is BIASED and caricatured by Rajapakshe supporters.
This will come to light next days.//

Media was always biased towards there political motives. Why do you cry fowl over that? There are no independent media outlets. I didn’t see any one complain about Sirasa when they were bashing Mahinda during his tenure. If you don’t like Sirasa please don’t watch it.

//Just because his term earned terrror eleimination not by his magical powers however collectivity succieeded it…//

Then why is he called war criminal? Why GOTA is targeted as a mass murderer? If it was a collective effort, everyone should take the responsibility. Even you.

//However, people including you have been brainwashed as if you would even let Rajapakshes to RAPE you on broad day light… why is that ?

              ARE PEOPLE THAT STUPID ?//

People are not stupid to follow a maniac like Ranil W. It is you that is stupid.

          Muslim,

there are lot of SHENALS like people in our society, They are the majority.

Not just racists, they hav eno brains. These men would do anything and everything to please racals. I think these men are just gulliable people
They see things go wrong, but nevertheless they continue helping the rascals further.
We perfectly know Rajapakshes are extremists.
Who are behind those muslim riotes. if not Rajapkashe supporters
They kill people on broad day light, but Rajapkshe even hold brave speech to teh shenals led society.
I think all are just rascals, They dont allow decency of life to take hold the society.
Ranil is a pigeon among the cats.
          So he cant win it.
I think it is high time to leave RASCAL men with rascal leaders. Let this coountry be ruined by Rajaakshes as is the destiny of Libya

Obviously this is a den of UNP die hards, and anti-Sinhala activists, paid to protect a loser. Lots of hot air and hot-keyboards but hardly anyone has a vote, them being SLK in their minds but foreign in their actions and chosen abode. Thank goodness that it is the voters out there in Sri Lanka, and not the 2-dozen die-hard bloggers that is deciding the future direction of the country ,and the MPs sitting in the mad house that decide the fate of the loser PM. We shall see in a few days time what destiny brings him.

Pure unadulterated crap thrishu . Sarath de Alwis is so middle of the road he can be easily misread as anti-UNP or anti Ranil as some have previously commented. Only a few of the commentators here, can be classed as diehards of any camp but truth to say, SriĹanka will struggle to replace Ranil in the short term. Surely he has made mistakes and many of your identified “diehards” have taken him to task for each of them. But all-told he is the best the country has to offer and the only man who can hold his own in any international gathering at present.

Bedsides the decency he has shown throughout the media mud baths makes him rank very high on my list of those who are best cut out for the job.

Thrisu, you should be blind from all sides right.

If RW is that loser, Sirisena should be thousand time more. He is the one who stood on the way not allowing rascal Rajapakshes being beaheaded.
Today Sirisens and his spinelessness created a mess in this country.

If he promised to bring those rascals and higher criminals to books, he should deliver it man. You like no others even if you are a group leader for a research group behave like those who go after astrology predictions in sl. Latter is said to be over 90% regardless of the education they obtained.

I think you are so blind idiot, not knowing to sense it just join hands with RW hatred communiteis. That is very unfair.
Not even your Mongoose would behave so, if they would have been asked whom to be defeated.

Thanks may wisdom be blessed at least in the days to come.

        Simon De Silva,

Who selected and supported Sirisena to his presidency? Isn’t it Ranil W? Why blame Rajapaksha’s for that? Don’t you think Ranil is a stupid loser?

The power is with Ranil, not with Sirisena. Yet no one could bring Rajapaksha’s to the book. Why? Because there is no evidence for their alleged crimes. Simple gossips are not admissible in the courts.

    2

A very finely balanced analysis from Sarath de Alwis as can be expected of him.

What is unfolding now is a pantomime of incredible proportions and it appears we the public have to pick the tab for the larks of these politicians. Just in case you didn’t know, I’d like to tell our pollies we are sick of them all.

It is also obvious that some electronic media have gone out of their way in rubbishing the PM and play the Judge and the Jury as part of the News. Little do they know how much goodwill and support they have lost as a result.

The higher the profile, lower the quality- that has been the theme of their news broadcasts. Sorry, not news but political propaganda.

Ranil should NOT go. He should stay and ensure that the traitor goes. Then may be we can release him too. But not before that happens.

    • 10

Kerankoku curry should have misguided you to all depths by now.

All we want is Rajapakshes to be imprisoned so that they the buggers cant get out of prisons out.

Those men in JO SHOULD be punished for all the mess they have been doing in the country.

  • 19

Ranil is Mr.Clean – the only MP who is not corrupt.
He is quite fit to be President or Prime Minister.

  • 16
    3

The purpose of this no confidence motion against Prime Minister Ranil W by former President Mahinda Rajapakse is not in the interest of country or people. This is merely because of his power hungry, to take revenge against those people who voted against him and who were in the way to become a dictator. He lost the Presidential and parliamentary elections because of his racist propaganda and his anti Tamil and anti Muslim stand. The recent violence against Muslims clearly proved that he has not changed in his racist policy. So, Tamil and Muslim parliamentarians should not fall in to the trap and games of Mahinda. It is a destruction of the country if Mahinda comes back to power again.

  • 15
    2

RW should serve out his term but should work seriously on bringing to the front a younger UNP candidate who can hold his own at the next Presidential election, while exposing the perfidy of the Rajapaksas as well as Sirisena.

That requires starting party reforms right after defeating the NCM and giving enough time for the new guy to raise his profile among voters.

Ranil should give a written undertaking–not mere verbal assurances– to his party men on this before the NCM.

  • 13
    1

Ranil Wickremasinghe should stay and face the no-confidence motion. It is high time that Ranil Wickremasinghe should expose these parasites who are eager to split the communities for their selfish gains, to the public. I have also written an article earlier that there is reason to suspect whether Maithiripala Sirisena and Ranil Wickremasinghe honey moon will last. So long as Ranil Wickremasinghe continues to be the Prime Minister, the unity of the country will not be affected. He is a gentleman who respects other’s respect including the places of worship. I would be happy that if the no-confidence motion is defeated, President Maithiripala Sirisena should resign and call for a Presidential election. Ranil should contest and teach these parasites a good lesson for the benefit of the country. The country needs Ranil as Sri Lanka cannot afford to face another civil riots. Ranil should emphasize that priority should be given for economic development for marching the country forward. and people are aware of it

I think our poeple are far from knowing the basics. They would be more than happy, if they would have been treated by highly corrupted rascals.

That is the saddest reality in this country.

  • 7

Yes agreed, both Ranil and Maithree should stay and deliver what they promised to the voters during the Presidential and Parliamentary election campaign. Unfortunately, the President due to him not being a strong person, he was taken for a ride by those who have accusations against them (SLFP group) and the “Pinata Seat” politicians who were rejected by the people but brought into the Parliament through the back door, started the comments requesting the PM to leave. Maithree also knew well from the CID reports prior to the local government elections that he is going to be the third force in the country and that he will not be able to persuade his own SLFP voters to vote for him. He then thought of stealing the UNP votes by attacking the PM. Unfortunately that back fired and exposed the President as a person who can never be relied upon or trusted. It is the President under whose signature the Central Bank was moved to PM and the appointment of the Governor of the Central Bank concluded. So the President should be the first person in the NCM. Based on these, if Ranil loses the NCM, the next step should be to bring an impeachment motion in the Parliament against the President where the number of reasons for the impeachment can be three or four times as many as against Ranil. We need honest and trustworthy politicians not knee jerking leaders!

    • 7

Ranil should be there, but he has to rebuild UNP. Young men should be given more chances.
He should encourage Prez Sirisena to do the job for what they have been elected.
Sirisena is intimidated by Rajapakshe men, so long he would not react as Executive President to the nation, Rajapakshe would abuse the freedom on and on.

Yes, Ranil did not do anything good but he should be supported to stay put until his term ends, in order to prevent any disgraceful Rajapakses grabbing the political power !
They are the biggest curse of the nation and these racist murderers, manipulators, plunderers and communal riot organizers should be kept out of politics and put in prisons. No mercy …enough of these rascals !

Ranil’s departure should be decided by him and his party , no one else ! Specially
foul-mouthed Wansa and Gemba camp should not be allowed to act as mouth
piece of MARA & Co in Ranil’s case . We want Ranil out of UNP top and the Govt .
I don’t think anything else is left for him after that . The reason is , HE FAILS IN
OPPOSITION AND HE FAILS IN GOVERNMENT . WHY POLITICS FOR HIM ? The
question in politics is not how long you have been in it but how much you have
achieved in your time ! Why stick around against mounting pressure from in and
out ? Ranil wants to play with NCM to continue in power and in the party .
This may be Ranil’s escape deal with MARA .

Rajamahendran of Maharajas is a curse to the race, and to the nation. He forgets the fact that he is running his channel without any interruptions, while tarnishing the image of Ranil is due to Ranil’s democratic leadership. During previous regime he was hiding like a mouse, even when his TV station was burnt in that era, not a single word was uttered, what a shameless creatures are these Maharajas are, are they suffering from Stockhome Syndrome ? (“Stockholm syndrome, or capture-bonding, is a psychological phenomenon described in 1973 in which hostages express empathy and sympathy and have positive feelings toward their captors, sometimes to the point of defending and identifying with the captors.”) IS THIS THE REASON FOR MAHARAJAH’S TO GO BEHIND RAJAPAKSHAS AND ATTACK RANIL?

Gratien Hewa…………. Voters must decide whether they want those parlimentarians who voted against the NCM are required in their electorates.

ALL expect Ranil to remain and do this, that & the other. However Ranil has been a nicom-poop for (03) long years & to his credit looted the CB under his watch.
What is said in this column are bias comments with a political flavour or to an hidden agenda.
THRISHU HAS HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD….. Parliamentarians are there for the money & NOT for the Justice & reason

Ranil must decide himself to throw in the towel. What right he got to remain at the helm after permitting the CB to be looted the Bond debacle under his watch? ???????????
It is shameless on the part of Ranil to hang onto power. A person with gentleman qualities don’t remain under any cloud?

Buramphi….. Why bomb Kili Maharaja ? Ranil has got a foot with him through his Cousin Rakkitha .J of UL Director whose daughter’s father In law is Maharaja.
    Small world of who’s who……

RW is the better of the two ‘bads’.
He must be given the chance (albeit last one) to clear all the scams.

      K.Pillai,

Yes why not. He hasn’t completed what he was elected to the office in the first place. That is do devolve the power to the Tamils so that they can declare independence. Ranil W should be given another chance to complete his mission. Or else we might not get any other gay boy who wants to abuse power even by selling his country for a dime.

As a person who voted for Yahapalanaya, I have a right to question the representatives I voted into the parliament.

In 2015, Ranil was the man behind getting Arjuna Mahendran appointmented as the governer of the central bank, consequenlty he’s responsible for all AM’s actions during office. Likewise, he should step down from the post demostrating all those British parliamentary tradiations or western morals he so speaks about.

Should Ranil go? What good it is going to bring for Sri Lankans when MY3 is still there? Both proved to be useless leaders during last 3 years, but RW was bit more active between them.
