Silence Is Suicidal – When Hate Gets Mainstreamed In Post-Easter Sri Lanka!

By Mohamed Harees

Lukman Harees

“The rich ruling class has used tribalism, a primitive caveman instinct, to their advantage since the beginning of time. They use it to divide and conquer us. They drive wedges between us peasants and make us fight each other, so we won’t rise up against our rulers and fight them.” ~ Oliver Markus Malloy, Make Racism Wrong Again

In 2004, then UN Secretary General Kofi Annan in the backdrop of America’s Post- 09/11, soberly explained that “the weight of history and the fallout of recent developments have left many Muslims around the world feeling aggravated and misunderstood, concerned about the erosion of their rights and even fearing for their physical safety.” His remarks, astonishingly, suggested that Muslims were the real victims of 9/11. Post 21/04 Sri Lanka too shows remarkable semblance to the Post 09/11 America where hate is getting mainstreamed, with Muslims being demonised and collectively held to account.

In a civilization rife with fear, it’s no wonder the word phobia has gained currency. Nathan Lean in his ground breaking book ‘Islamophobia Industry’ refers to a 1947 anti-racist documentary ‘Don’t’ be a sucker’ which examined the divisive rhetorical atmosphere that fuelled the rise of Nazi Germany. One of the rouble rouser stands atop a soapbox on an American street corner decrying the ‘truth about Negros and foreigners’. He attacks immigrants, Jews, Catholics, Freemasons and blacks. Men in the crowd nod their heads in agreement until they belong to the group included in the trash talking. A polished soft spoken man from Hungary explains to a young fellow watching  the tirade that the very same thing happened before in pre-World War II Germany. Only this time, the groups under attack had changed. ‘The Nazis’, he said, ‘knew that they were not strong enough to conquer a unified country. So they split Germany into small groups. They used prejudice as a practical weapon to cripple the nation. We human beings are not born with prejudices. Always they are made for us. Made by someone who wants something’, Hitler then blamed Jew for the woes that befell on Germany and for Germany’s loss during the Great War. This fear psychosis created by him about the Jews  among the people ultimately led to the  systematic annihilation of 6 million Jews during WWII which Hitler called us the ‘final solution of the Jewish question’. Of course , anti-Semitism and Islamophobia fit into different historical and political frames of references. However, in both cases of Anti-Semitism and Islamophobia, we see that religion is used as a powerful tool to create fear.

In Sri Lanka too, the latent but powerful Islamophobia and anti-Muslim hate lobby which gained currency during the initial phase of the Post-war period , came out into open arena, strengthened by government’s apathy and the raw emotions of a visibly charged populace rising up against a perceived ‘Muslim enemy’. It was true that there was the emergence of the ‘Muslim extremism’ threat to the collective well being of the society which needed mending both from within and without. In fact, after the 21/04 Easter Sunday tragedy, an atmosphere full of soul searching and self-criticism was evident within the Muslim community – one in which there was a spiritual readiness to accept that something was “wrong” with its’ collective consciousness and to acknowledge that reform and renewal were necessary. People everywhere were talking about the dangers of maintaining a narrow religious parochialism that only recognizes literal interpretations of Islam to the detriment of its’ greater vision. This, was an extremely positive and welcome development.

However, unfortunately that mood began to evaporate and was replaced by fear and insecurity when the build up of obnoxious anti-Muslim hate and demonization by rogue sections of the Sinhala media and the hate lobbies led to open hate verbal assaults, attacks and harassment against a shocked Muslim community which was caught unawares in the thick of the unravelling events. In the process, the elephant in the room-the government’s culpability and the international dimensions to the tragedy – were virtually ignored. The subsequent developments only led to a demonised community being driven to a point of despair, with various canards being thrown at them at regular intervals to portray them as an alien and an unpatriotic segment of the society.  Anti-Muslim canards, fake news, conspiracy theories, even in the mainstream media led to  boycotts of Muslim businesses and arbitrary arrests in Post- Easter Sri Lanka. There have been cyber media campaigns too, that have a malicious intent causing negative impact on the society, which provided a certain level of comfort for online users as they began to say whatever they wanted without being known or identified by name.

Canards were woven with such professionalism and fake news presented in such a climaxing and an emotional style to make them stick in the inner psyche of the peasantry and people at the grass-roots with much power. ‘The goal of media sensationalism and  ‘fake news’ canard aren’t propaganda—it’s epistemic chaos. What started as a political tactic has now evolved into a social virus. Fake news doesn’t mean hoaxes or lies. The term applies to stories that are factually wrong and also involved “how news outlets make editorial decisions about what they choose to report. Trust in the Fourth Estate is therefore in a free fall. The sharing of biased and false news has also become all too common on social media. Members of the national media are using their platforms to push their own personal bias and agenda to control ‘exactly what people think.’ … This is extremely dangerous to our democracy” according to a Monmouth University poll report.

In 2014, the story of few Muslim youth assaulting a Buddhist monk became the basis of Ven Gnanasara’s venomous speech and subsequent spate of ‘Aba sarana’ hate attacks against the Muslims in Aluthgama and Beruwela. This was found to be a false pretext and a canard spread to incite hatred, as the youth were released without charges after 4 years. Then in 2018,  rumours of a Muslim plot to sterilize Sri Lanka’s Sinhalese majority led to real-life violence in February that resulted in the beating of a Muslim restaurant worker. He was falsely accused of spiking the shop’s food with sterilization pills in the small town of Ampara. Because of rumours on Facebook, a lump of flour found in the food was transformed in the mind of the patron into a sterilization pill. Language barriers between the Muslim operators and the Sinhalese patron also made it impossible to correct the falsity and a mob at the restaurant formed that beat the worker, destroyed the shop, and set fire to a local mosque. The Government Analyst and many medical professionals of various specialties then came forward to dispel the myths about the so-called “infertility pill” said to be mixed with food served in eateries. Inciting and fake posts on FB spread, and with another twisted ‘road rage story’ adding racist fuel to the fire, leading to stoking violence toward Muslims across the hill- country. This sterilization canard  has been one of the famous tools in the armoury of the anti-Muslim hate peddlers. Many posts abound on FB accusing Muslim businesses of introducing sterilization drugs in foods and women underwear/  attire.

In the Post-Easter, some rogue sections of the mainstream Sinhala media such as Divaina newspaper and Hiru/Ada Derana TV)  were competing with the powerful social media hate platform to spread canards and report fake news without any sense of social accountability and shame. The infamous story published by ‘Divaina’ newspaper on 23rd May that a doctor (later known to be a SHO named Shaffie) suspected to be a strong member of National Thowheed Jamath (NTJ) organization had sterilized 4000 Sinhalese Buddhist mothers was proving itself to be a fake and a misleading news, with the CID reporting to such effect to the Courts. The Shafi accusations were largely “stage-managed”. The probe was flawed because the authorities did not call for evidence of sterilizations until after Shaffi’s arrest, adding that all the allegations were unsubstantiated. Both the reporter and the DIG of the areas were implicated in this ‘plot’ with political motivations , to mar the image of the Muslim doctors in the eyes of the public. Allegations a Muslim doctor might be forcibly sterilizing Buddhists are particularly incendiary in Sri Lanka where hate groups supported by political schemers  within the Buddhist majority have accused Muslims of seeking to use a higher birth rate to spread their influence. Divaina was carrying on relentless in their fake news campaign by inhumanely targeting the two girl children of Dr Shafi too, by accusing them of distributing sanitary pads among their school mates. This too proved to be a false allegation.

Hiru and Ada Derana TV in many instances misrepresented the statements made by Muslim leaders, twisting the facts while engaging in media sensationalism and exaggeration with regard to ‘weapon finds’ within the mosques during raids in the aftermath of the Easter tragedy. Ven Ratana and Ven Gnanasara were vying with each other in trying to instil further anti-Muslim hatred in the people, by spreading  another canard that Muslim politicians such as Rishard Bathiudeen (RB) were involved with some terror suspects. This allegation too is subsequently proving itself to be a false one as well with the Police reporting to the Speaker that they were unsubstantiated. Even ‘Sathosa drugs’ canard was vehemently denied by the Ministry Secretary at the PSC hearings. (This does not mean that  RB is un-corrupt; this only refers to many unsubstantiated terror charges being brought against him which basically targeted the community at large). Now both Ratana Thero and Gnanasara Thero are going around the country insulting the CID and the Police, calling them biased. Even the recent statement by the Asgiriya Mahanayake Thero also in effect supported this so called sterilization story.

A similar canard was reported again in the Divaina that an opposition politician Gamini Lokuge has stated that a well-known charity providing free meals to the thousands of patients to few hospitals in Colombo, should be inspected as their ‘free-food project’ appeared suspicious; again making insinuations about foods served are liable to make Sinhala women sterilized. Although Lokuge later denied, this however led to the Charity suspending the operations, harming the thousands of poor patients in the process. Another Divaina report also attempted to make Muslim diaspora too another bogeyman in the Post- Easter period.

Near-identical social media rumours have also led to attacks in neighbourhood India, where lynching is increasingly being filmed and posted back to Facebook, where they go viral as grisly tutorials. In India, Facebook-based misinformation has been linked repeatedly to religious violence, including riots in 2012 that left several dead, foretelling what has since become a wider trend. Using the Wahhabi-extremism card, the unity of the Sri Lankan Muslim community is being meticulously attacked by the hate peddlers, once again through canards. Gnannasara Thero is a master of this game, using divisions within the community and prevalent anti-Muslim hysteria, to achieve his evil plans to spread anti-Muslim hate. He recently blamed few prominent Muslim businessmen too as committing acts of treason, without any evidence. The recent incident to blow a local incident in Atalugama out of proportion to imply the prevalence of a Muslim extremist plan to forcibly convert Buddhists was another  case in point, Many Sinhalese villagers bore witness to the fact that there were no racial overtones to this incident.

The use of hate speech and naming and blaming religious minorities for attacks on civilians and military personnel is extremely dangerous, as in the present case of making Muslims accountable for the Easter disaster. They are resultantly facing greater persecution today than at any other time in the nation’s history. This hatred and ‘otherization’ particularly of Sri Lankan Muslims may play well to the Buddhist majority, particularly before a national election, but as the global trend shows, this approach is suicidal and damages a society’s integrity, economy, and finally its stability. After fighting a bloody war of over three decades, one hopes both Sri Lankan government as well as its’ people tone down their blame game and finds the actual culprit behind this highly sophisticated attack. Demonisation of the Muslim community through canards and fake news is a dangerous game which will bring irreparable consequences. Combating impunity therefore is a national priority in the light of the country’s global ill-reputation in not punishing culprits whether political corruption or racist violence.

As Bill Whittle. an American conservative blogger/political commentator, once said, ‘When all is said and done, Civilizations do not fall because of the barbarians at the gates. Nor does a great city fall from the death wish of bored and morally bankrupt stewards presumably sworn to its defence. Civilizations fall only because each citizen of the city comes to accept that nothing can be done to rally and rebuild broken walls; that ground lost may never be recovered’. Easter Sunday tragedy was a turning point in our country in many ways . Our nation is now at a moment where some people think they can espouse racism and anti-Muslim bias and do it in a very open way. Even through  we can never stop hate entirely, it is imperative that all possible effort be undertaken through public activism to push it out of the mainstream, preventing hateful ideas to penetrate public conversation. It starts with people recognizing their own power to not just be a bystander, but an up-stander; to not just sit idly by when something happens, but to raise their hand and say, ‘Enough’, and become voices of change in their communities.

It cannot be agreed that the post 09/11 America and Post 21/04 Sri Lanka refer to the Muslims as victims. The democratic countries including India were watching the growth of Wahabbism 1970’s which was a threat to the security of the countries. When the calculated and syatemmatic secret plans of the extremist Muslims were exposed they were demonised and held to be accountable. The Twin Tower was home to hundreds of communities and Sri Lanka was a paradise to many tourists of all communities at a time when the SAARC was formed. After the 2nd World War, there was a call for respecting human rights and the result was the birth of the UN Declaration of Human Rights, but Saudi Arabia did not favour it. Muslim countries were reluctant to move an iota of inch from religion. On the contrary, they had planned to create a fear psychosis in the minds of non-Muslims which in turn compelled the democratic countries to view them with suspicion. Even Sir Winston Churchill said Islam is a dangerous religion. Islam is a religion which will not comprmise with other faiths and Muslims appear as demonic community. The vital issue was whether there was any measures taken by the Muslims to revive Islam in compliance with the UN Declaration of Human Rights. On the contrary, after the Easter Sunday carnage, the Security Forces had to confront the Islamic extremists at Sainthamaruthu, some fake Muslims accompanying Hindu priests for purpose of mixing contraceptive powder in the panjamirtham were arrested (even today a Muslim youth with weapons was arrested in a temple with two other identity cards), destruction of Statues in places of worship, etc had taken place. If Muslim leaders are genuine why should it take about one month to resign together and why have they not taken any steps to revive Islam with the view to co-exist with other communities.

Mr. Ayyathurai, I know you write whatever comes to your mind praising your Hindu India and their ideology. Don’t forget, you are a Tamil who ran away because of the same Hindu Tamil terrorists. So don’t muddy the water. How did Hindu religion change an iota for other religions. Your Hindu India is prosecuting and killing people who are beef eater just because the cow is your gods vehicle. IRONY THOUGH IS THAT THEY EXPORT THE SAME BEEF AND MAKE MONEY

Hindu India was part of the UN only because of the imperialism of the British Raj. Nothing less. So don’t bother to whitewash India.

Wahabism and Saudi Arabia has a problem which keeps them isolated. However, the larger problem is that politicians using religion as a tool for their political gain.

        Mr.Harese:
The root cause of the religious culture wars in Sri Lanka today is the Weaponization of religion – both Islam and Buddhism — by USA and the Easter carnage organized by the US Special Operations Forces (SOF) to Divide, distract and turn Sri Lanka into a US military base with SOFA.
So please write your next comment letter to Teblitz at the US Embassy and ask her to pack up and get out of Lanka. US has a long history of using Islam and Buddhism to fight communism, Russia and China and prevent the rise of Asia. Please see this report about US new game

        https://www.mintpressnews.com/u-s-special-operations-the-new-face-of-americas-war-machine/256431/

Please write Alina Teblitz of the US Embassy and ask her to stop promoting Saudi Wahabism with buddy Bin Salman and visiting monks at the Dalada Maligawa to sell SOFA, and weaponizing religion in Lanka.
Also , ask Teb to remove US Special Op.s Forces ( SOF) and the US embassy needs to be SHUT DOWN. SOF staged the Easter carnage to destroy religious peace in Sri Lanka and bring in SOFA to fight fake IS terrorism. Also, DU should ask about the US diplomats at JAIC Hilton found by sniffer dogs with bomb materials after the Easter disaster.

Also ask the US embassy in Colombo, with letters copied to the UK and EU representatives in Sri Lanka when they plan to dismantle the US NATO Diego Garcia Military base as it is an on going HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATION in a neighbouring country , Chagos Island, as the Chagossian people have a right to return home. and the ICJ has ruled that the UK US occupation of Chagos is illegal under international law.

Harees, the issue here is the brutal killing of 300 non Muslims by 10 Muslims, which people like you are trying to sweep under stating that only few did. The same thing happened in New Zealand when one white man killed 90 Muslims for which crime the entire Muslim world was up in arms against all white men. This is the type of justice Muslims practice.

      Ayathuray,
I can agree with you only partially. I’m in the minority who believe that a vast majority of innocent Muslims has to suffer for actions of a few extremists. However, I do agree with your point that it is the sectarian conflict between Shia & Sunni Muslim that turn into a bloody political rivalry between Iran & Saudi Arabia that should take the responsibility for the current tragic status of innocent Muslims. Therefore, as long as this conflict along with the insistence that Muslims countries must adhere exclusively to the Sharia law, this problem will not go away. Even though this problem may not be perceived by Muslim nations dominated by either sect, it will present itself as a huge problem both socially & politically in countries like SL where Muslims are a minority.
I believe that the 21/4 tragedy represents only a “moment of truth” that has been in the making over a decade. My question to all Muslim community leaders and to Muslim intellectuals in particular: “How & why you failed to recognize this potential danger early enough, particularly when some Muslim community activists were trying to draw the attention of the security forces in vain”? I believe that it is now too late to blame S/B extremists for harassing Muslims b’cos they can ask: “Didn’t we say so?” Unlike members of other major religions of SL, S/B was increasingly becoming more liberal & less attached religious centers. It was this trend that prevented S/B extremists from getting upper hand even in the face of political opportunism that tried to ride on extremism. It appears that 21/4 tragedy has opened the door fully for these deviant forces. Now, it is up to Muslim leaders & intellectuals to find a way to win back the confidence of not just the S/B but also other ethnic/religious groups as well. As always, we will do our part to defeat all kinds extremism in SL.

Muslim politicians never expected that Buddhist Sinhala Fundamentalists turn against them because of their contribution in oppressing Tamils by opportunistic Buddhist Sinhala Fundamentalists. Of course the bomb blast is hugh impact on Muslims, it was not the work International Islamic Fundamentalists but is fully carefully planned work of opportunistic Buddhist Fundamentalist politicians. Now there is no other route than giving their support to those opportunistic group in order to get their ministerial posts. This is what going to happen now.

Before you call yourself a Buddhist, Muslim or Christian, study the life led by the person you are following. Was he a peace loving, compassionate human being or a war lord who married many times … sometimes to little girls.

      Ayathuray Rajasingam,

“On the contrary, they had planned to create a fear psychosis in the minds of non-Muslims which in turn compelled the democratic countries to view them with suspicion”
      .
Okay, if I ask you to give such an Islamic country, I know you would pick Saudi Arabia. Now you give me a democratic country that condemns Saudi Arabia openly, and not wanting to have a relationship please? India (Ha..ha..)? USA? UK? Sri Lanka?
      .

      Ayathuray Rajasingam:

“Sri Lanka was a paradise to many tourists of all communities at a time when the SAARC was formed”

Why SL wasn’t a paradise to many tourists prior to SAARC? Wasn’t it your Eelamists that destroyed that image? Take Tourists Arrivals stats from archives, and see how the numbers are climbing since May, 2009. Another stupidity of yours reveals when you said, “The vital issue was whether there was any measures taken by the Muslims to revive Islam in compliance with the UN Declaration of Human Rights”. Was Hinduism, Buddhism or Christianity revived to stay in compliance with UN’s HR? And tell me what is the use of countries nodding to UN for HR, and not practicing it? Why do you have to run behind UN for HR nearly a decade now?

You stick to writing about Hinduism and its myths to magics. But I guess you are not eligible to comment on another person’s faith system since you don’t know about it.

      • 1
        1

        Amila W,
Every faith should accept that life is a gift of God with challenges towards the path of a noble mission. Every religion has its drawbacks. Hinduism is not an exception. But Hindus or followers of other faiths other than Islamists, do not kill others even in foreign countries because of their radical ideologies. Because of the attitude of Muslims, today China was compelled to isolate the thousands of Muslim children from their parents fearing for the spread of radicalism which will be bar to development. Similarly China had arrested lakhs of Muslims and shaved all their beards. These are news. You should have known that there are countries such as Singapore, Switzerland, Canada and many more countries which have acted in compliance with the UN for HR and proved to be peaceful countries. The trends in Hinduism, Buddhism or Christianity have shown progress in revivalism in compliance with the UN Declaration of Human Rights. Sri Lanka Buddhists may shout through provocation, but will not resort to killing of others of any faiths as a real Buddhist. Even Somarama Thero said that he did shoot S.W.R.D.Bandaranayake as a Buddhist at the final hour of his death. It is still a mystery as to who shot S.W.R.D.Bandaranayake.

LUKMAN HAREES: Islamophobia industry is West created, I think they wanted after the USSR-COLD war, had to have an enemy to fight. Need wars, need to manufacture weapons and sell weapons. You muslims provide all those opportunities. I think both Maithripala sirisena and Ranil tried to bring Remote Sensing equipment from some Unnamed, registered only as a date company. so, for them it is just commis. They wanted to buy ships also from different countries.
I always wonder why Sinhala Catholics died and that is not discussed. BBS did not blow up in side churches. But, they are the focal point of every discussion.
I know both Ven. Virathu and Ven. Ghanasara opposed the Saudi Arabian funded Pakisthani terrorists and Sri lankan in the middle (Pakisthan is called by the west as the PIVOT to WORLD) of these terrorist attacks. My strong guess, the western Hyperstate is stuck with this Theravada buddhism , even after over 70 years of rearranging ,they can not take control of either Myanmar (Myanmar at least closer to China) or Sri lanka. Bhikkus are spoiling the soup.
Imran Khan knows they are innocent people but they are being used as the middle man to do everything. Even Modi with Pulawama attack had a nice escape.
Anyway, you muslims are hypocrites and you people are really stuck. Why Iran is not helping you and why Saudi Arabia is not helping you. Saudi Arabia wants to spread Sharia financial laws in Srilanka, A sinhala Buddhist country. but, they sell Oil according to the christian laws which is profit seeking and exploiting the market needs. I heard both Zaharan and Abdul Zukir(?) of UTJ even though they did certain things wrong, they have very much Buddhist thinking. Zaharan was forced to blow up. Abdul understands that he did something wrong. He even smilingly acknowledged that his prophet had eleven Wives.

I think Al Bagdadi is doing his best to save Wahhabis and accuse Sinhala buddhists for everything and say it is BBS who is violent and not Wahhabis.
Is AL Bagdadi saying that Zaharan blew up because of BBS.

The last time, muslims bashed BBs, aluthgama violence, digana violence, Islamophobia, anti-muslim begotry and got a bunch of Wahhabis – A heavily bearded men carrying have backpacks full of explosives, blow up some churches and bankrupted the Tourist industry and the whole country. they talk about abandoned muslims businesses but they do not talk about bankrupt of tourist industry and those who helped it..
Now, muslims are carrying the Same propaganda and the next time, I am pretty sure, it will be Abahaya, Niquab, birka wearing muslims women will blow up.
    Muslims say they are saints.

This is how UK and EU treat Muslims:
    • France was the first EU country to ban burka & niqab wearing in 2011. France has shut down 20 mosques and prayer halls for preaching radical ideology since 2016. After Paris bombs pigs head were thrown at mosques.
    • Belgium has banned halal animal slaughter. Belgium is the 2nd country after France to ban burka in public in 2011.
    • Halal animal slaughter was banned in Denmark in 2014.
    • Germany – 91 mosques were attacked in 2016. Chancellor Merkel declared in 2016 that face veils should be prohibited. Two-thirds of Germans say ‘Islam has no place in German culture’
    • Italy – In Lombardy burka ban was approved in local government buildings and hospitals.
    • Netherlands – bans full face veil in government buildings, schools, hospitals and public transport.
    • Switzerland – burka is banned in Ticino and a 2008 referendum decided to ban minarets on mosques.

    • UK – 1700 mosques exist in UK and half of this were attacked since 9/11. 57% of British public support burka ban in UK (YouGov poll) in 2016. After the Manchester attack a mosque was torched in Oldham.
    • In 2016 – 137 mosques were attacked – 60 in France, 54 in Germany, 21 in Sweden & 2 in Switzerland.
    • In 2008 leaders of 15 European cities met in Belgium and called for a ban on new mosques and halt to ‘Islamization’ of European cities.
    • Austria has banned foreign sources of financing and Imams must speak German. 156 assaults against Muslims in 2015. Austria’s new ‘integration law’ banned full face veil in 2018.
    • Netherlands – bans full face veil in government buildings, schools, hospitals and public transport. Party for Freedom declares to ban all mosques in Netherlands.
    • Romania – a lawsuit stopped the Bucharest mega-mosque.

    L Harris

Have you heard the idiom ” The Dogs bark, but the Caravan moves on” the situation is in Sri Lanka is such. People can keep writing highlighting the injustices and oppression committed against the minorities repeatedly, but it falls on deaf ears. remember what Robert Knox said 400 years back after spending 20 years in the island with the inhabitants–

“the Chingulaya are a cunning lot who mistake the low-level cunning they possess to be a high level of Intelligence,”

“For they make no account nor conscience of lying, neither is it any shame or disgrace to them, if they be watched in telling lies: it is so customary.
In their Promises very unfaithful, approving lying in themselves, but misliking it in others;”

So now you have to change the trajectory if you want to get some results, as by now you would have realised that these people are very cunning, they will lie and do every evil act to achieve their objective, the only language they understand is that if their action is going to bring them more harm than good, then they will stop, other than that nothing else will work.

      concerned citizem,
I do not have any grievances against Muslims. In fact, I appeared for a Muslim Minister Ahamed for bribery and eventually won. He is such a broad-minded gentleman. Do not think I am against Muslims. I am only against radicalism. Before Sir Winston Churchill has mentioned about Islam, French philosopher Montessque had already said the best religion in the world was Hinduism prior to the French Revolution. He also mentioned that Hinduism was a harmless religion, but he was critical of Hinduism. That does not mean Hindu extremists are not spoiling Hinduism. Hinduism is liberal. However, since both Christianity & Islam have founders and a central authority, there may be differences and because of that Sir Winston Churchill’s family may have fear about conversion. Perhaps founders of religion are concerned about conversion and that is one of the reasons as to why they conquered some countries in Asia and Africa. Hinduism never believes in conversion. It is in compliance with the UN Declaration of Human Rights..

CT, some home truths need to be stated, taking care not to violate your comments policy I am well aware of.
    /
Firstly, the attempt by Harees and other Muslim apologists of the Easter Sunday atrocity to deflect focus of attention from the heinous crime (of blasting 300 innocent praying Sri Lankans) to other minor issues needs to be rejected wholeheartedly,
    /
Anyone can see that there is no comparison whatsoever, between the alleged rise of ‘racism’ –
and the heinous criminal act of the Islamist terrorist canines. The attempts to dress up the totally justifiable public reaction to the cruel bastardry, and minor inconveniences arising from vital anti-terrorism investigations as racism.(based on a ridiculous definition of it) and other accusations of discrimination are dangerous distortions of events.
    /
The country has not forgotten the loud noises of similar claims of grave injustices by the Sinhala Buddhists towards Muslims, by Harees and his friends, following the Aluthgama and Digana riots. In those cases, the Muslim apologists did not stay away from pointing the finger at the ‘entire’ Sinhala Buddhist nation. But now, they are claiming that it was just 1% of the Muslim population that was responsible and others should be spared of any scrutiny!
    /
Allowing this kind of falsification of facts and history to claim injustice is dangerous for the future of this country, and will go towards the nurturing of bastards similar to those who committed this atrocity.
    /
Muslim apologists need to take action to cure their self interested tunnel vision, and allow the legal terrorism investigation to proceed..

While condemning the growing incidents of Islamophobia in the world the so called moderate Muslims also need to look within and have the courage to equally condemn Islamomania tending to grip the world. There are many instances of proselytising and conversions, both by overt and covert means, of non-Muslims in mainly Islamic countries. The inability of Muslim immigrants to adapt and attempts to impose their practices in their newly adopted country is another curse.

Sri Lanken Muslim ulama have no balls. They Lie what is in the Quran. The Quran is specific about jihad. The Ulama deny there is jihad. This has led to Gnasaraya quoting correctly and ulama misleading the muslims. Jihad becomes obligatory on all muslims to protect their family/wealth and religion if attacked. offensive and defensive. Denying what is in the Quran will lead to becoming a non-beliver. Muslims should state what is their correctly- even if the truth is bitter for the non-belivers. We a from Allah, we will return to him.

    E Eye,

The only thing that was banned by some of the mentioned european countries ” government” is the burka, or face covering, which is fair enough

The biggest difference between European countries and Sri lanka is that in Sri Lanka the main culprit of the discrimination and orchestrator of all the crimes against the minorities is the government, where as in European countries the governments is neutral and there is recourse for people in the justice system.

Muslims maybe safer in Sri Lanka than EU and US, but the problem is Buddhism it is not safe with the Sinhala Buddhist, they are trying to turn a philosophy in to an ultra racist dogma, the muslims will somehow prevail, but its kiss and goodbye to the buddhism at this rate

It is not in the interest of any one to create tension in Sri Lanka..
It is Mahinda groups who create all this; to come to power .
Sinhalese must teach him a historical lesson in this coming election.
Mahinda wants his son in power..
    He is dreaming.
Namal is not matured enough in politics.
    Long way to go ..
If only he study more on politics .
If only he get good will of people ..
If only he does good for the country ..

Lankan Tamils: this i show dumb you Tamils are. Even Tamils were there to teach Pabakaran a lesson Why Mahinda Rajapakse is wrong for everything. IT is Ranil who said, he would ask the law enforcement to do their best and go to the bottom of the MAwanella incident of desecration of Budda Statues. Zaharan had paid Rs 20 million to save those Vandalists. the govt is not exposing those which lawyers, which police officers and which judges got money. One of those Statue Vandalists also got caught in the Easter Attack.

What hate in post-Easter in Sri Lanka?
There is no hatred in post-Easter carnage. There is only pain, disbelief and mistrust.
How could we believe our friends who live among us kill our own parents, siblings, children and neighbours?
How about the hatred that led to kill close to innocent 400 people losing 179 children of their parents?
What do you expect from a daughter who saw her mother’s body lying on the floor with a part of the head blown off? How about a man whose wife and three children died on his hands while waiting for the ambulance?
Why do you Muslims don’t talk about the hatred carried out by Muslim terrorists?

The problem is with Sinhala politicians. They are nitwits who are not interested in developing the country and instead are looking many ways to fatten they themselves. Some how get rid most of the 225. and change the corrupt election system.

    A, Rajasingham,

You need to be thorough in your research, otherwise you will get the facts wrong; in Islam, there is no compulsion in religion, no one can force anyone in anyway to accept the faith, this is in the Quran, so it cannot be bended in anyway.

The proof is India, Muslims ruled India for 700 years, and if forced conversion was allowed, today the whole of India would have been muslims, but this is not the case then, or now.

Today, there are only two cultures left in the world; the Global culture and the Islamic culture, everyone including the chinese and the indians have embraced this global culture, the Global Culture is becoming more and more open, and all the rules are being broken, anyone can do anything and there is no moral interest in the global culture, but only just interest, in contrast, the Islamic culture is becoming more stronger than what it was 100 years ago, and going in to the fundamental roots, so naturally there will be conflicts between the cultures when one doesn’t embrace the other.

Muslims for sure will not change from this because they adamantly knows that what they follow is the truth, and conflicts, oppressions, injustice are all part of this trial.

However, whats happening now is illogical and unsubstantiated, unjustified lies are spread without any basis.

The way of the world is that the truth will triumph in the end, everyone is waiting, we will also will wait to what will happen in the end
