Causing further embarrassment for President Maithripala Srisena, the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres issued a statement this morning stating he urged Sirisena to revert to Parliamentary procedures and hold a vote “as soon as possible” to appoint a Prime Minister.
Explaining the UN Chief’s telephone conversation with Sirisena, the UNSG Office, this morning, said Guterres urged the Sri Lankan President to revert to Parliamentary procedures and allow the Parliament to vote on the Prime Minister’s appointment as soon as possible.
Secretary-General informed the President that he was following developments in Sri Lanka and offered assistance in facilitating a dialogue with all parties to resolve the current situation, the statement also added. “emphasized the government’s responsibility to ensure peace, security, and respect for the rule of law.”
Painting a different picture about his telephone conversation with the UN Chief, Sirisena said he had a ‘highly successful” discussion with the UN Secretary-General, indicating Guterres was in agreement with the Sri Lankan President’s unconstitutional conduct.
Sirisena said, “I assured him that the appointment of the new Prime Minister has been done in keeping with the Constitution of Sri Lanka .”

When parliament remains prorogued until 16th, the Sec Gen’s request to convene parliament “as soon as possible” wouldn’t mean he is in agreement with the date remaining as 16th. Therefore the phone conversation (allowing for MR’s lack of conversational ability in English) cannot be described as a “successful” one.
Now that the JVP has decided to vote against the president there is the need for him to take the date even beyond 16th to make up for that number against him.
JVP’s move will now prevent any further crossovers as anyone crossing over must be sure of at least five more crossing over to ensure majority.
This would be impossible.
