President Maithripala Sirisena ordered officials to suspend the services of his Chief-of-Staff I.H.K. Mahanama and the Chairman of the State Timber Corporation P Dissanayaka who were caught by the Bribery Commission while accepting a bribe of Ra 20 million from an Indian businessman.

The suspects apparently had solicited Rs 540 million from the businessman promising that they would provide him with approvals necessary to obtain machinery and building space for his business. The price is alleged to have been negotiated down to Rs 100 million.
The Colombo Chief Magistrate ordered that the suspects be remanded until next Thursday (9th).

I do not think so. The two corrupt officials had demanded the amount for the permit. But the Indian only pretended to agree and he would have complained to the officials in the bribery Department and that is why the two got caught when he gave the bribe with recorded currency notes while the officials were secretly watching. I guess privatizing state sectors will reduce this menace and bring efficiency in those departments. A small country with world’s largest state sector means we have too many people depending on government to provide them with jobs and other benefits. This also means our government spends huge amount of our taxes on these sectors. And job security is usually not something that worries these people like the counterparts in private sectors makes them become counter-productive except few who care about their personal development.
Unemployment is bad for a country, true. But solving this issue only through state-sector is equally bad. On the other hand, what options? We screwed GSP+ before, we screwed foreign investment with racial tensions, and now we are screwing our potential tourism industry with assaulting and raping tourists – Left with state-sectors and Middle-east. The Bond Scam was much, much worse. A lot of other crimes also have to be investigated. I’m now reflecting what the Public are saying, NOT what I know, but I’m not being vague.

As a common man, when someone raises this subject, what comes in my mind are the ones who asked for bribe or if not I gave them when other straight foward options did not work – no matter that is in the last 3 years or more. Common perception is that you can’t virtually get things done or at least done faster at a government office unless you oil the palm of a peon at least. It is not someone’s attitude towards those in the lower levels of government service, unfortunately it is the reality. There are very good and honest people like you. I think that in certain areas of activity, what you say is true. Palms ARE indeed oiled, but at the same time there are many at all levels of government service who attend to all sorts of duties without having to be bribed. My Land Issue was like that during the past three years; some expressed amazement, and even I know that I was fortunate. I found that being very open about the mistakes made by me and my family were appreciated.

I can’t help feeling that the paradox of my being simultaneously a poor villager as well as being obviously fluent in English (without ever using it as a “Kaduwa”) helped!

The rest of my family are not exactly poor, and I’m very conscious of the fact that we are in many senses deracinated. Social classes in our society are pretty complicated, and the strange role of English has much to do with it.

Not for a moment have I said that the accused here, Dr I.H.K. Mahanama, should be allowed to go free merely because he treated me well. In fact I have asserted that my experience can have nothing to do with this case. I have also asserted that when I came in to the Ministry at Battaramulla that morning in 2015, I didn’t so much as know that such a being existed. The second meeting was, strangely, quite recent. I know of no other crimes committed by him, and they are not relevant to me. However, they will be extremely relevant to the Prosecution – and I say that the case MUST be prosecuted.

Our problem has been that when we seem to be in a position to prosecute in the Wasim Thajudeen case, some guy says, why bother about a Muslim, ignoring the Lasantha case; then it is said, Lasantha was a Christian, what about the Pradeep Ekneligoda case. Then they say that he had a mistress. That is Sandya’s business, and she’s crying out for justice.

Of course, in Colombo he obviously does not come across as “a man about town”. A fortnight ago, I managed to unearth some short clips of his “brave” interactions in English.

According to news reports the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) arrested Mahanama (and Dissanayake), on Thursday, at a leading hotel in Colombo.
The whole thing smells fishy. Who gave CIABOC the information and goaded them? Was it to embarrass MS?

The bribe giver probably has strong Indian government connections and the case will fizzle. The CIBOC informer connections? Guess.

I cannot help questioning why people with allegedly dirty background are appointed without a proper investigation. How many times can the President claim that he did not know of alleged problems?

What did he mean by “This country was built based on the essence of Buddhist culture”?

Native Veda: Oh! What a task you have entrusted upon me? That “Buddhist Culture” that has been made a “BUSINESS TOOL” in commercial and political sense by all the Political Parties of all shades and the Clergy is not a my plate of rice to “analyse” or “clarify”. On the other hand, this question doesn’t arise with the subject of this article and as you know, I rarely deviate from the subject matter. Anyway, let us meet on that “Buddhist Culture” discussion as and when the subject is brought to light.

In Sri Lanka entire system is corrupt as whistle blowers like Mr Nagananda has proved with enough evidence. This Piyadasa Disanayake when working under the CBK solicited all types of bribes including that of having sex on government account. Staff at the Presidential Secretariat maintained silence as he was very close to CBK. In fairness to CBK she was not aware of these misdeeds. The Bribery Commission should investigate and see how he has become so rich. Results will be astonishing. His son Shashimal who is also politically involved at the highest level is also a business deal maker. He is in pharmaceutical importing trade too. This is not second to Bond Scam! How many similar bribe taking incidents would have taken place unnoticed and undetected.

what i believe is they build up the wimanaya going by yakas…
yakage haetiya wimanaya… i think almost everyone is corrutped in this country. They are more into corruption than uncorrupted behavoiurs.
Just go to a place and just see how many of them would line up and wait patiently until his or her turn comes. ::: PEOPLE are no used to otherway around. If you know a person only, you can get things done. Unlike in Europe, you dont have systems in that part of the world.
More you know personally, life become much easier for you.
This we notice each time travelling to the country, we the ones who lived out of the country for the last decades become foreigners to our country – not knowing the systems down there well.
I feel like favourization is on their top of the agenda.
Politicians talk more about their rivals but not about what they can upliftments of the peoples issues.
This country is unique for them.
I would not have nay hopes … since I now know it is no easy at all.
As a blood cancer patient can only be healed off through FULL BLOOD transfusion, if our society to be rebuilt for better one, paradigm shift of the society should be the case.
There, professionals should take the lead… Hamurudhurwos should NOT allow break the rules or stand on the way.

Native Vedda: You did not get what I said of this “Buddhist Culture Business”. I should have replied : Go and ask that NFF’s Samaraweera for what he meant by “Buddhist Culture” . Instead, I indirectly showed how this terminology has been made a “Business” by politicians of all shades, that which applies to this “Samaraweera” too and NFF. I suppose that “NFF” you referred to is National Freedom Front of Wimal Weerawansa of which this Samaraweera is the Secretary. Need I tell you or introduce this CORRUPTED politician Wimal W who is charged in Court of Law over an “Unaccountable Wealth” of Rs 71 million. He , his Party Secretary and the NFF doing “Business” with “Buddhist Culture” and what that is could only be explained by them ONLY. So please do refer your question to them and get what you desire. Please note, my “fighting strategies” are personal to me and when, where and how those are deployed are decided by me only. This statement may look crude; but it goes to where it deserves to go for easy understanding.
