Sri Lanka: Presidential Election Amid Crises

By Lionel Bopage

Dr. Lionel Bopage

Introduction

Universal suffrage is crucial in shaping a nation’s political landscape. Decisions made at the ballot box lie at the core of democratic societies, guiding the policies that shape our lives and futures. However, the choices made by voters are influenced by a range of factors, including political affiliations, candidate attributes, policy positions, socioeconomic status, social influences, and media impact. Each factor plays a unique role in shaping individual attitudes, preferences, and decisions at the polls.

Periodic elections free from undue influence are fundamental to democratic governance. These elections should offer citizens the opportunity to choose representatives who will make decisions affecting their future. However, political parties often use various tactics to mislead voters, including making unrealistic promises, engaging in corrupt practices like offering material incentives, and creating fear through violence, both state and non-state. Modern technologies further complicate the situation by enabling manipulation and disinformation, while foreign interference remains a significant concern.

The Sri Lankan Context

In Sri Lanka, a long list of male candidates has entered the race for the upcoming presidential election. Many of these candidates are seen as proxies, aiming either to support or undermine candidates from other parties.

There are credible allegations that state resources are being used to support the incumbent president. Allocating public funds to projects for electoral gain, rather than public interest, has become commonplace. Disinformation and misinformation campaigns through various media, texting, and messaging platforms are standard practices. The media, which is supposed to provide balanced coverage, often fails to do so. Old political operatives with histories of fraud and violence have re-emerged to support certain candidates. Election-related violence is once again rearing its ugly head, with activities such as bribery, voter deception, and attempts to influence voting behaviour becoming all too common.

This article aims to highlight key factors that voters should consider during this presidential election.

Elections and Democratic Practice

In the name of democracy, many world leaders continue to support authoritarian or would-be authoritarian states, making a mockery of democratic practices. A functional democracy requires broad acceptance of diverse views. Yet, deformed democracies have given rise to dynastic and familial rule, suppressing freedom of expression, and undermining civil liberties. The independence of the judiciary and media is often compromised, leading to the establishment of tyrannical regimes that ultimately erode democratic practices.

In countries like Sri Lanka, India, and Bangladesh, the rise of ethno-religious fundamentalism has further undermined the acceptance of pluralism. Non-majoritarian communities are marginalised in favour of religious, cultural, and linguistic supremacy. In Europe, this trend has led to the rise of ultra-nationalist regimes that destroy the tolerance and respect that communities once had for one another. The rise of far-right, ethno-nationalist majoritarian politics has become a global phenomenon.

Thus, elections do not always equate to democracy. However, many believe that democratic practice is a more efficient and capable way of changing a country’s political course. The possibility of errors in decision-making is believed to be higher under authoritarian regimes. Yet, elections today are often held against a backdrop of rising populist conservatism and the strengthening of far-right movements worldwide.

As a result, many young voters are disillusioned with elections. In many countries, they question the validity of elections as a measure of a healthy democracy. Media, civil society, and the judiciary, which have traditionally upheld democratic values, have been weakened. The flames of democracy are slowly being extinguished and keeping those flames alive is no easy task.

The Same Old IMF Economic Tonic

Despite the pro-government propaganda in Sri Lanka, the so-called economic reforms have not addressed the serious issues affecting most of the population. While people struggle with the unbearable cost of living, IMF-led economic restructuring has imposed further pressures, benefiting the ruling elite and their protégés.

The primary concern of the IMF has been to protect the interests of the neo-liberal elite, particularly those led by the United States. Ruling elites in countries that receive IMF loans are often marked by widespread corruption, mismanagement, and resource wastage. Resources are often pillaged for personal gain and electioneering purposes, keeping these elites in power. For instance, Pakistan, the IMF’s fourth-largest debtor, is expected to seek another bailout soon.

Unfortunately, this pattern has repeated itself in many countries, including Sri Lanka. Since joining the IMF in 1950, Sri Lanka has received sixteen packages of loans. The current loan package, the 17th, enjoys the backing of the elite. Several creditor countries have agreed to defer Sri Lanka’s debt repayments until 2028. While foreign reserves have increased, inflation and interest rates have fallen, and tourist arrivals have risen, the sustainability of these gains is questionable given the global tensions, pandemic risks, and economic cycles.

Nevertheless, the current economic climate could be used productively to transform and rebuild the economy under a democratic regime that maintains checks and balances on the capitalist mode of production. This is exemplified by the progress made in the People’s Republic of China and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. Without fundamental structural and constitutional changes, however, Sri Lanka’s current economic environment will be short-lived, and the country may soon require an 18th IMF loan package.

Drastic changes are needed in the upcoming presidential elections to prevent a worsening socio-economic and political crisis.

The Corruption Conundrum

Some analysts and writers defend corrupt regimes and politicians by downplaying the role of corruption in Sri Lanka’s economic mess. Meanwhile, those who have been part of corrupt, wasteful, and mismanaged administrations are making new promises, claiming that incompetence, ineptitude, mass-scale corruption, and looting of the public treasury will no longer be the norm. Believing these false promises would be disastrous for the country and future generations. While corruption cannot be entirely eradicated, it must be drastically curtailed and not allowed to dominate governance.

Historically, political parties and candidates in Sri Lanka have failed to keep their election promises once in power. Post-independence talk of economic development, diversification, and the abolition of the executive presidency has led to little progress. Despite following various capitalist frameworks, from state-controlled to neo-liberal, and from closed to open economies, the country has seen little change, with only slight shifts in emphasis.

Common themes across these capitalist frameworks include investment promotion, modernization of the rural economy, establishing free trade zones, providing unregulated environments for investors to exploit labour, and maximizing profits. Any socio-economic and cultural progress under capitalism depends on removing social barriers rooted in feudal remnants. Yet, with increasing instability, ruling elites have been more than willing to retain and conform to feudal remnants, even resurrecting royal traditions.

This shift has led to a focus on irrationality, myth, and stagnation, displacing creativity and stimulation in arts and culture with blandness.

Protecting Rights and Freedoms

During past elections, voters have considered the threats posed to democratic freedoms and human rights. However, these considerations were made without iron-clad guarantees of protection. Depending on the prevailing political circumstances, voters cast their ballots with the hope that the candidate they chose would change the way the country was governed. Yet, these expectations were rarely met.

Even if a new regime is brought to power by revolutionary means, there is no guarantee that it will lead to a better setup. From the Russian revolution onward, almost all regimes brought to power through revolution have ultimately failed, not solely due to imperialist or neo-liberal conspiracies, but also because of internal contradictions that led to factional infighting. Regardless of how a progressive regime comes to power, the end result will be the same if the citizenry and civil society are not empowered and remain passive in the decision-making processes that affect their future.

In Sri Lanka, many people are fed up with the way the established ruling classes and their protégés govern. Their methods have spread and intensified corruption, waste, and mismanagement, even resorting to criminal means. During the pre-election period, providing material incentives such as money, food, alcohol, land, and equipment has become widespread, along with making promises that are quickly forgotten after the elections. Massive misinformation and disinformation campaigns are conducted against opponents, while racism and violence, as seen in the pre-Easter bombing periods, are also used.

Voting offers citizens the opportunity to participate in the decision-making process that shapes their future and that of the next generation. If someone does not vote, others will decide that person’s future. All eligible citizens should vote for the candidate they believe can create the necessary change for the country to achieve a better socio-economic and political environment. Voting allows individuals to stand up for the issues they consider important.

The Erosion of Democracy

Over the past two decades, there has been a global trend of reversing democratic practices. This is often driven by authoritarian leaders who use their power to undermine democratic norms and institutions. In Sri Lanka, this has manifested in a situation where leading political figures mobilize or create grievances to gain or maintain power, often at the expense of dismantling existing democratic norms and institutions.

While the methods by which authoritarians acquire power may differ, a common characteristic is their persistent effort to undermine the mechanisms and institutions designed to keep authoritarianism in check. Flawed elections, curtailed democratic rights, and eroded checks and balances have all contributed to the decline of the rule of law and political accountability. This decline is further complicated by the cost-of-living crisis, climate change, and ongoing global conflicts.

Conclusion

Democracy can only survive and flourish if people actively participate and contribute to its practice, making it a material reality and a continually renewing process. When citizens disengage, democratic norms and practices erode. The right to vote in fair elections is a cornerstone of democracy, and if elections are held in a corrupt and violent environment, democracy will perish. In these circumstances, citizens have a duty to do everything possible to protect democratic practices and prevent rights violations.

Sri Lanka needs a new governance with a new outlook, a new dynamic policy framework and a new leadership council that is capable of and will enable developing an economy that will satisfy basic needs of the local population, by protecting the country’s food, water, and energy security. This requires enhancing local agricultural and industrial production and building a service and export-oriented competitive economy based on those foundations.

A majority of the population appears to have placed their trust on National People’s Power and its presidential candidate comrade Anura Kumara Dissanayake as being capable of handling this transformation. Despite the efforts of vilification of the JVP’s history and its associates, people believe that those who remained steadfast in their ranks are honest and committed for building a better society. The National Peoples Power is increasingly mobilising and organising the masses. It has even established an island-wide institution capable of real-time monitoring, recording, and reporting election-related criminal activities. It appears to be a timely and promising move.

It is time for Sri Lankan voters to use the upcoming presidential election as a platform to create the necessary change, address the serious challenges facing the country, and protect its future.

    To Tamil Voters.

Please do not vote for Ranil W. He is an arch enemy of non-Sinhalese people.
In his first election rally held in Anuradhapura, he has been claiming to be a thun Sihalaya. He promised to do whatever it takes to achieve greatness for Sinahala Buddhist population. He is a wolf in Sheep’s clothing. We know the Rajapakse where they stood and even now where they stand but Ranil is a cunning fox like his uncle. Not trustworthy at all. You Tamil politicians who are holding candles to Ranil beware

He cannot be trusted. Please vote either for AKD or Sajith. This guy was not elected by people but by the corrupt Rajapakses to serve them.

“Please do not vote for Ranil W. He is an arch enemy of non-Sinhalese people.”
Double game played by Sinhalese Political leadership is nothing new to Sri Lankan politics. This political dimension has changed and all of them are hiding their true Buddhist Sinhala face because the competition for minority votes becomes a deciding factor of the winner for the Presidential position.
As far as Tamils are considered, Tamils should be neutral position in this election because whatever the promises coming from these candidates are not trustworthy. Even the signed agreements were not honoured by the Sinhalese leaders in the past. They never raised their voice against injustice to the Tamils or Muslims.

Sajith promised to build 1146 Vihares in the North East, just before last presidential elections.

AKD has to account for JVP’s role in their share of racist and violent contribution to the post independent conflict.

And Gunduvindu must be an enemy of Sinhalese people, because he makes speeches in Jaffna.
Have you noticed that Weerawansa’s Muslim sidekick Muzammil has jumped ship too?

“Have you noticed that Weerawansa’s Muslim sidekick Muzammil has jumped ship too?”

No, when did he switch sides?
Dinesh who used to be the archenemy of UNP, Capitalism, …… pro Sinhala/Buddhist racism, ….. anti Tamil National Anthem, …. now has lot of praise for liberal Ranil. …..

I cannot believe all these are happening.

Weerawansa was with Dilith, bare bodied …. in front of Nallur Temple, …………. Have all these patriots made up their mind to transform Nallur as another ceremonial centre of Sinhala/Buddhist power?

Arun Sidhdharth the present MJP Jaffna District Organiser since June 2024 once told he would convert Nallur temple into toilets and now he is seen with its leader Dilith Jayaweera.

Are we living in a dream world?

I am not talking about principle positions like nimal fernando.

All sorts of strange bedfellows 🤣🤣
“The event at Waters Edge in Battaramulla saw all political parties and defectors from other parties to the Wickremesinghe fold joining along with UNP seniors to sign the agreement. Three members from Wimal Weerawansa’s National Freedom Front (NFF) that represented the nationalist camp including Mohamed Muzammil and MP Jagath Priyankara are also in the Wickremesinghe camp.”

This Muzammil was with WW from the inception of the NFF. I suppose, if Dinesh can support RW, anything can happen.

              Thanks.
I thought it was another election rally, being naturally lazy I just ignored the news.
              Where is Channa Jayasumana?
Is he still a professor or what?

“I suppose, if Dinesh can support RW, anything can happen.”

              I love it.
So what makes Dinesh’s world go round?
In case if Namal Baby is crowned after the elections will Dinesh sit in the opposition? Alternatively is he willing to commit hara-kiri to save Sinhala/Buddhist pride, 2500 years of history, the Sinhala National Anthem, …..?

Like his brother Major General late Ananda Weerasekara, who later ordained as Ven. Buddhangala Ananda Thera, Sarath too could have ordained as a Buddhist monk just to escape from his Karma.

Never in his wildest dreams did he imagine his soul mate Wimal too would betray him by visiting Nallur temple and make it another legitimate ceremonial centre of power, rivaling Malwattu and Asgiria.

On the other hand he should be campaigning against Sarath Fonseka.

“And ‘Gunduvindu’ must be an enemy of Sinhalese people, because he makes speeches in Jaffna”
In order to assess, whether ‘G’ is an enemy of Sinhalese or NOT, it would be pertinent and helpful, whether in Jaffna, he (‘Gunduvindu’) spoke in Tamil to the ‘NORTHERNERS’ or in his native Sinhalese!!! Because if it is the former, then it could be reasonably assumed that he didn’t want his electorate constituents to be enlightened of the contents and concessions, by two-timing Politicians of SL, which leads to consternation and needs condemnation!!??

The current ruling class and their protégés will be doing the utmost to prevent NPP coming to power. Sajith Premadasa is NOT the right choice in this Presidential Election as there are too many rotten apples have joined him to benefit them personally and not for the country’s betterment.
Hence it is time for the people to vote for the NPP and dump the economic “terrorists” who practice PSEUDO PATRIOTISM

      You are absolutely right.
I did not know that Sajith too is an opportunist.
I am sure AKD would deliver what he says he would. However, he should be careful of his comrades around him.
One of my friends years ago told me about AKD when he was new to the leadership to watch out for him and he reckoned he would be an honest straight talking politician.
I thanked my friend Romesh who made this observation perhaps 6 years ago.

However there are hundreds of his party old guards with kirichchiya (Kandyan dagger) drawn and ready to stab him on his back. Lal Kantha would deal with you at the village level, one of his justice for people (in his case for the party) rule.

Perhaps you don’t know that AKD, like other politicians, promises different things to different audiences. One thing to Sinhala Buddhists, another to Tamils. Recently he promised a private gathering of businessmen that he would legalise the spa business. Did he say this to the Mahanayakas?

Haha! I can think of a funny answer but I dare not give it as the CID might arrest me under some provision in the ICCPR about hurting the religious sentiments of people and then keep me in remand jail for a long time until the case is heard in court!

          Old,
This is not a way to twist the vibrant debate in a narrow direction and dispirit it, though it is known that you cannot support NPP/JVP. If Evil can do anything better at any time, he had that his party members, TNA, SLMC, ALMC, Up Country parties, even the JVP, during Yahapalanaya time, when could and would have done it all in a gentleman way, would not behave like cunning old wild fox of Wildlife Sanctuary, SinhaLE Lankawe, after he was defeated with one single seat for UNP!
I heard even Wijeweera went to Ayatollah’s from time to time and begged for blessings. My scrutiny did not reveal any despicable, inferior conducts of Anura in meeting the Ayatollah while even Hakeem, Rishard like all other politicians is meeting them.
Old, I don’t know if Anura said those word to Ayatollahs, or he said them that he is passing a legislation to ban all the distilleries, taverns, Halal Ministry, massage parlors, Langkang male prostitutes’ tourist attractions, halfway hotels-brothels, most of the orphan children abusing Viharas…….but I promise you, he assured them he will be the president for them too, when he win the election. Rest is understood.
          That is normal and acceptable.
But still there is a point in us, the lifetime anticommunism advocates, supporting a man who comes from the foundation-camp of JVP.

Evil dismissed Parliament in 2019 and said he wanted Hitler to rule the way he wanted. After that, as the ruling party leader, he surrendered the government to his opposition party, which he attempted thrice during Yahapalanaya time also. Remember, in 2019 UNP did not lose the election, SLFP -I was one lost election. Why did (Evil’s) UNP resign? Why was the one who worked as PM under SLFP -I could not continue that under SLFP II? All were the same Donkeys! After that extreme flaw in politics, he couldn’t be elected by Sinhalese, and they didn’t do so far. JVP has left all the past bad leaders to go. But the Evil had changed the classical UNP members to special Slap Party rowdies. During the Drama of Yahapalanaya, Communist Dinesh who led the Joint Comedy Club for Royals, against Evil, is now leading the Punnakku Joint Club for Evil, herding the past Joint Comedy Club monkeys.
Using people’s government as ball, by playing Chinese Ping-Pong with the SLFP play-mate partners, Evil is the one who is protecting and extending the life of the 75-year UNP-SLFP Union’s bastardy government.

There is only one way to fix the Langkang Political landscape. That is removing Evil out of politics. 99% of the Ceylonese will agree, if the job is eliminating the most destructive force Evil, from Langkang’s politics, that can be done only by Anura.

Dr. Lionel Bopage, I have immense respect for you. However, your statement is not true.

I have never, yes never, yes not even once, cast a vote at an election in Sri Lanka. I know for a fact that my vote does not shape my life.

Dear Sinhalese brethren, in your desire to ruin my life you have ruined our country!

    • 3
      8

      Not quite right.
      .
A handful of power hungry, greedy, corrupt families that have eventually become part and parcel of international crime networks and italian mafia have ruined our country in 75 years.
      .
These families could be named easily: Senanayakes, Wijewardenas, Jayawardenas, Wickremasinghes on the Green Camp. Bandaranayakes and Ratwattes from Up Country on the Blue Camp first, then subsequently the Rajapaksas. Then there are a couple of outliers like Sirisena and Premadasa whom too are trying to establish their families as one such aristocratic family of yesteryears. Except in the case of Premedasa it is widely stated all of them belonged to a single caste indicating whether we like to accept or not, that caste factor that has been operating. The Bodu Govi caste, and the egositic position they have taken as the most supreme caste of the country. The sole rulers and the owners of the country.
      .

In addition the class factor has played a role too. This is evident when you look at the resistances that Mahinda Rajapaksa faced at the hands of Chandrika, when the latter had to hand over the reins of SLFP to the former. Sirisena’s case was an exception and in my personal view was a result of a scripted skit. The constitutional coup during his tenure still could be viewed as one arising because of personal differences between him and Ranil, class I believe is a major factor here too.
        .
If you look at the peri and post independence history of the country undermining castes other than Bodu Govi caste has been a frequent feature. Bodi Govi upper class leaders even coorporated with non-Sinhalese leaders to establish their superiority at the expanse of other castes that were deemed inferior.
        .

Particularly Karawa and Salagama castes that were contenders of Govigamas. They were categorically discriminated by the Bodu Govi caste. I have commented about this previously giving examples hence I would not go into detail again here.
          .
This greed and desire to keep the power within a few select families has resulted in subverting the due democratic process undermining justice, rule of law, fair play, and fundamental rights of individuals as well as subgroups of communities including ethnoreligious ones in addition to caste based ones I already mentioned, and along with unsound economic, fiscal, and monetary policies among other bad governance practices, over the course of three generations have not only driven the country to banckruptcy, but also allowed it to be seized by various ethno-religious fundamentalists, sex maniacs, mafia men, and finally internatinal criminal networks. .

Contrary to the popular belief ethnoreligious fundamentalism is neither limited to historic Sinhala Biddhism fundamentalism nor recent Islamic fundamentalism.
            .
Eventhough it is unpopular to talk about Christian fundamentalism, it has been silently operating in the background, perhaps continuing from colonial era, some fractions of which too seemed to be well connected to the aforementioned international crime networks.
            .
In addition to all this, the 30 year war between the LTTE and other Tamil militants and the government of Sri Lanka has taken its own toll both directly and indirectly impacting on not just the economy but the general sociopolitical order of the country. .
            .
            TBC

            • 1
              11

The Tamil diaspora, academics, and politicians, led by the LTTE who apart from the physical war fought on the ground, with their propaganda machinery that claim and level accusations of genocide and mass graves, in the guise of fighting for freedom, too have done a damage that may not even be quantifiable – keeping in mind that these accusations have not be proven so far.
              .
Their continued attempts to even distort the country’s history, and hatred with which they carry on, and have been carrying on (since when only god knows) of Sinhalese Buddhists, have not helped the conflict between them and the Sinhalese to be resolved, even after 15 years of the cessation of the war.
              .
The coorporation they (the Tamils) continue to recieve from Indian and other regional countries like Malaysia and their intelligence services, and also from the anglosphere that includes The United Kingdom, The European Union, The US, Canada, and Australia, along with Non-Sinhala Buddhist ethnoreligious groups such Christians, Moors, Muslims, and Hindus world over perhaps amongst others, have not helped either.
              .
If at all they have only complicated matters even leaving victims that no one is aware of, on whom the most astrocious crimes have been committed.
              .
Without taking all these and perhaps some more nuances and complexities taken into account the predicament the country is in, can not be fully analysed and explained.

“Christian fundamentalism, it has been silently operating in the background, perhaps continuing from colonial era, some fractions of which too seemed to be well connected to the aforementioned international crime networks.”
38 monks are convicts and suspects over child sexual abuse, rape, murder, fraud, treasure hunting
3 Hindu priests and a Catholic priest are in prison over same, no Islamic clergymen involved
It is clear who is more involved with crime networks.

              Hello sanctimonioushypocrite,
I grew up in a working class area of Aberdeen where many people (mostly women) worked in the Fish Industry. Gutting, Skinning, Filleting and Packing for 12 hours a day kept them in constant contact with the Fish. This permeated their skin and no matter how many Baths (or Showers more recently) they had, the smell of Fish persisted They all wore Rubberised Aprons, Wellington Boots and Caps to cover their hair. If they stopped working in the Industry it took a couple of weeks at least for the smell to wear off.
Yes the Middle Class used to pinch their noses and held discriminatory views similar to your own, but we understood.
              Best regards

S-M: There is nothing to be “Surprised”.

These visitations undertaken by the politicians to receive the “BLESSINGS” have become an established RITUAL practiced from time immemorial, especially during election times. In such “Performances”, the symbols that are used are: Dalada Wahanse; The Cross: Dathu Karanduwa; Kuran; Nawakgraha statues; Pirith Noola etc….etc.

In this Presidential election only ONE candidate wins. What I am surprised is how all of the above “Blessings” could choose ONE from among all these “39” candidates who have visited these “Godly Sites”. Also, what if the worst CROOK out of “39” who undertook such “Visits” is chosen to be our President? My only consolation is: I am condemned to pay for my unwholesome (sins) “Karma”.

      Hello SM,
There is a long history of State Power interfering in Church Matters. At the Council of Nicea 325 AD, called by the Roman Emperor Constantine, they mainly discussed the Arian Heresy, Divinity of Jesus and the Precise Date of Easter.
Here is a Link to a fairly objective view of the Background to Nicea and the subsequent Course of Christian divisions – https://europe.factsanddetails.com/article/entry-734.html
In North Western Europe Roman Catholicism is in a minority. The Muslims later on took the Arian position on Jesus as being only one of the Prophets and not Divine. The Catholics look upon the Pope as God’s Representative on Earth. The Protestants don’t. They along with Sunni Muslims see their Relationship with God as a Personal one. Christianity is full of Contradictions, :Love thy Neighbour” “Turn the other Cheek” but in 15 July 1099 the Christian Crusaders massacred all the Jews and Muslims in Jerusalem.

          Hello OC,
Many people forget that Arabs, Jews, Palestinians, Syrians, Jordanians and even many Egyptians are all Semitic Peoples. That’s why Islam, Judaism and Christianity are called Abrahamic Religions. The Koran was probably written originally in Syrian Aramaic. It was the Lingua Franca of that period for Christians, pre Islamic Arabs and others throughout the Middle East. I already mentioned the Arian Heresy at the Council of Nicea. Arius himself was active around Alexandria, his heresy even spread to the British Isles..
Pre-Nicene Syrian Christianity had no concept of a Holy Trinity, believing that Jesus was human. “That Pre-Nicene Syrian theology is still to be found in the Quran in the seventh and eighth centuries shows clearly that Arabs had already accepted Christianity in an earlier period” from “The Hidden Origins of Islam” Professor Karl-Heinz Ohlig. So yes you are right ” Islam is an Early Christian heresy that took on a life of its own”.

In the ME, you must have met Orthodox Christians from Kerala whose religion is said to have been brought over by pre-Islamic Syrians. They still use Syriac in their liturgy, and

              Hello OC,
Yes one of my Keralan friends told me it was St Thomas the Apostle, one of the Disciples of Jesus in the middle of the 1st Century. I am not sure if this was the “doubting Thomas” of the Bible, However there were Persians at the Council of Nicea 325 AD, and the Christian Church in Kerala has a long history of being helped by the Persian Christians. It also says in the Catholic documents on Nicea that “All the faithful, scattered though they be throughout the world, are in communion with each other in the Holy Spirit, and so, he who dwells in Rome knows that the people of India arc [are] his members”.
Although there is no Contemporary Evidence of St Thomas in India, it would be hard to find an explanation other than a Syriac Jew (possibly Thomas) founded the Christian Church in Kerala. All Churches of that time would have used the Greek Septuagint Bible
              Best regards

Sri Lankans hold the key for transforming the corrupt and repressive political system that has taken root after independence and sustain democracy. All communities should reject primordial ethno-religious politics once and for all and vote on the basis of rational criteria like the economy, social development, human rights, gender equality, right to sexuality, and abolition of poverty and exploitation.

    • 0
      2

Sumihiro, we all talk of rational criteria, abolition of poverty and gender equality, but tell me where all this is practiced in our nation. Please move your group towards action rather than mere talk so that there will be different results after elections, even though we may have different crises to be expected throughout our lives. Major act needs to be to paralyze the robbers of state funds and recover the loss. May they find the true Creator God who provides and protects with no need to rob from anywhere. Jehovah looks after his own, when truth on the scaffold and wrong on the throne, as in the dim unknown, God stands in the shadows watching over his own.

What we now need is a leader who does not succumb to these dynamics and continue this perpetual cycle that will only result in further banckruptcy and decay of sociopolitical order of the country and the morals of its citizenry.
    .
Someone who could reboot its economy and the sociopolitical order along more sound principles, ensuring human rights and freedoms, establishing rule of law, justice, fairplay and equality, and can usher Sri Lanka into the third millennium of CE by presiding over it with honesty, integrity, and dedication.

An educated person who has adequate complex cognitive capacities with which the needs, wants, and aspirations of the country’s citizens could be understood, and communicated to the outside world including to international stake holders of today’s globalized economy and the world, to win their trust while bringing investments to develop the country through real economic growth without resorting to petty tacts, bases on hubris and rhetoric.
      .
And last but not least who could effectively re-negotiate with the likes of the IMF, the World Bank, and other creditors, bi and multilateral, including commercial ones, a better deal, that is best for the country, its economy, and people as a priority, while ensuring debt sustainability, country’s credit worthiness, and solvency of its economy.

We already through extensive head hunting exercise around the globe that began in 1990s have found the perfect candidate for this job. It is a second generation Sri Lankan, a medical doctor by profession, a specialist currently residing in the United Kingdom. A beauty with brains.
        .
She is Dr. Shehani De Silva (MD), An individual that hails from the prominent political family of yesteryear, of Dr. Colvin R De Silva and C. P. De silva. Born, bread, and educated in the United Kingdom she is now ready to serve Sri Lanka in the above given capacity something that she always dreamed of ever since she was a child. Her mother is a top corporate lawyer currently with the Citi Bank London and she also has a younger brother who is an Aeronautical Engineer by profession working I believe for Concorde.

Vote for the presidential candidate who represents a disciplined political party and one whose members don’t jump opportunistically from one side to another like a mad monkey purely to safeguard their own self-interest and secure their political future. This includes people who were associated with such parties for decades but are now standing as independent candidates.
Also, don’t vote for any politician who protects criminals by seeing no evil and hearing no evil. Oh yes, and don’t cast your vote to persons who want to push through repressive laws like the Online Safety Act. If you do so, you will be pouring mud on your own head!
