Sri Lanka Rides A Gotabaya Surge & Blends To A Sinhala-Buddhist Ethos: Election Sends A Chilling Message

By Kumar David

Prof. Kumar David

Let everyone first congratulate Deshapriya, Hoole, N.J. Abeysekara and the election staff for conducting a truly first-rate election under trying circumstances – COVID, political interference, a not very helpful AG and numerous court challenges by different interest groups against each other. We will be the poorer when their term expires and I dread to think who their replacements will be.

Recently I read somewhere that Abraham Lincoln mused “Elections belong to the people. If they choose to turn their back on the fire and burn their rumps they will have to sit on their blisters”. On August 5 the people of Sri Lanka singed their bums rather badly. The outcome is nothing to be happy about. In broad summary the results point to this:

a) We are a land soaked in Rajapaksa mystique and sodden in Sinhala-Buddhism.

b) The SLPP held on to 72% of the Sinhala-Buddhist vote and will form a strong government with MR as prime minister.

c) GR-MR have cobbled together enough for a new constitution without cross-overs or the need for Sajith who has now been rendered redundant. In this the siblings have defied predictions including even Basil’s; the way is clear for a constitutional dictatorship.

d) Sajith has wiped the floor with Ranil’s shirt and pants. He is in a position to take over the UNP name, Sri Kota and the Elephant symbol if he is so inclined.

e) Sajith will be ineffective against Mahinda and Gota; he is no fighter. The anti-authoritarian space in Sri Lanka is a vacant lot.

f) A further reason for (e) is that the Sajith-UNP is hobbled by tensions between populists (Champika, Rajitha, Harin, Kiriella) and neo-liberals (Malik, Eran, Harsha, Fowzie). The Sajith-UNP, or SJB if it does not take over the UNP, will replace the Ranil-UNP as the focus of liberalism. From Champika to Fowzie and incorporating Sajith’s mild support of Tamil-rights that’s inevitable. In the 21-st Century liberalism will not dissolve into the village.

g) The poor performance of the JVP-NPP makes mobilisation against authoritarianism an uphill task (Sajith is of limited use for this purpose, but better he is in than out).

This and the next paragraph say things that has been on my mind for a long time but I could not utter due to electoral exigencies. That is, that there is empathy between the politico-cultural character of the people (mainly but not only the Sinhalese) and the Rajapaksa phenomenon (mystique and siblings). There is an intrinsic connection between the ethos of the people and Rajapaksaism.  What the Rajapaksas signify and evoke are what Sri Lanka is; it is as comfortable a blend as fish and water. It is too simplistic to reckon that war victory enamoured Gotabhaya to the masses. No, it’s a deeper psyche than that; what the Rajapaksas denote is what the Sinhala masses are; they gel. Despite much corruption, alleged criminality, excesses of the clan and ugly crudeness “They are us; they our ours”. This landslide election victory cannot be assimilated without sensitivity to that nexus.

The formal UNP has been wiped out NOT because of corruption, ineptitude and the bond-scam. There are far bigger and bolder rogues per square centimetre in the SLPP than the UNP or in Sajith’s bandwagon. The seamless blending of Gotabaya mystique into Sinhala consciousness, the symbiosis of the personal with the political-cultural, this is the true choreography of the drama. What the Rajapaksas emanate is what Sri Lankan polity breathes today. The motto of the government going forward will be Gotabaya adoration more than Sinhala-Buddhism.

The small upside (c) is tempered by the realisation that MPs can and will if needed be purchased. The big downside is (g). An implacable Executive leaning on an obedient military whose loyalty to the Constitution remains untested, now supplemented by a pliant Legislature, in the context of a feeble Judiciary and a chaotic Court situation is no pretty sight. I am surprised that not many see what I see ‘darkness at noon’. Responses like Mangala Samaraweerra’s Radical Centre (RC) launched on 6 August are inadequate to the task. RC envisages a middle way of democratic decentralised governance, abolishing distrust between communities, and flourishing in pluralism and secularism. “RC is where all can discover a common humanity beyond race, creed and caste”. Decentralisation, that is devolution of administrative and political power is good, and I am pleased by RC’s call for pluralism and secularism. Mangala’s denunciation of saffron-robbed thugs and Harin Fernando’s exposure of the cardinal trickery of the Anti-Christ are in line with my own outlook. It’s high time we in Sri Lanka stood up and denounced these Neanderthal cave dwellers. But . . .

My concern is that a liberal stance will not be adequate to counter the emerging authoritarian threat. Although there are no pogroms or race riots right now, no Kristallnacht and only some state sponsored demonisation of Muslims and “Eelamists”, the state of affairs in this country today is more serious than in Germany after the 1932 election. In the April 1932 presidential elections, Hitler polled 1/3 of the votes, but was defeated by Hindenburg in the July runoff. Even in the March 1933, two months after the Nazi seizure of power and after stormtroopers unleashed a campaign of violence and terror, the Nazi’s could only muster 44% of the vote in federal elections. The 72% Sinhala Buddhist landslide to the SLPP last week sends a chilling message about what kind of society we are going to be. Have the days of pluralism, multi ethnicity and multi faith been buried? Of greater significance is that this is a repeat message, first broadcast at the November 2019 presidential election. Both left and liberals stand on the common ground of pluralism, but the frightening difference with Nazi Germany is that pluralism in Sri Lanka is being buried not by fascists but by the mass of the Sinhala-Buddhist population. (“Father forgive them for they know not what they do”).

What needs to be done urgently is for the minority communities, the masses who voted for the SJB and will eschew a sell-out, and the left to all pull together on a minimum programme to resist the worst, and the worst is yet to come. The economy will grind down in the coming period and a kilo of onions whether you ask for it in Sinhala, Tamil or Arabic will cost the same. Up to a million jobs will disappear by mid-2021. Whether the government defaults on foreign debt servicing remains to be seen (if it does the rupee will collapse). This is the scenario that the state is preparing to meet and deal with by repression. The people have chosen to turn their backs to a raging fire and to embrace racism, to indulge in adoration of the Rajapaksa cult and to revere antiquated cultural baggage. To use Lincoln’s terminology, they will have their posteriors fried.

Ranil is finished. At this time of writing not all the results are known but it is being said that he may not win a seat at all. The performance of the Sajith-UNP too is surprisingly poor, just 20% to 25% even in some traditional UNP strongholds. The cry of Gotabayaism and Sinhala Buddhism was not something the Sajith-UNP could withstand. The UNP has always had those who went with Sajith, not Ranil, are traditional UNPers. It’s as simple as that.

The left was quite unable to withstand the Rajapaksa tidal wave. There was no animosity that I felt during the campaign on the count that we were not Sinhala-Buddhist enough, there was no backlash of that nature at all. (I was on the NPP-JVP platform). It was much simpler, thousands said how wonderful the JVP had been parliament but then went right ahead and voted otherwise. Ninety-five of every one hundred I spoke to were scathing in their scorn of SLPP and UNP “bloody crooks”. And of that ninety-five, ninety-four proceeded to vote for these crooks. It’s a schizophrenia that I have not seen anywhere else in the world.

The last matter of interest that I will reserve for another day after more information leaks out is how the MR-GR dynamic is panning out. It’s more than a MR-GR thing, its about the balance and sharing of power between Cabinet-Parliament and Executive-Military-Viyathmaga cabals. This tension will be a source of friction in the early months until the new normal settles into place. The elections have strengthened MR’s hand as he is the custodian of Parliament but his health does not seem to be very good to judge from public appearances.

There is no ariyan blood or dravidiyan blood .people do not live on promise only they need three meals a day.currently the government is short of money and will go all out to sign MCC agreement once the first cabinet approves it.like it or not with in one year the people who voted this way will face a very bad situation due to high cost of living.but RAJAPAKSAS ARE IN A GOOD POSITION AS JVP-ANURAKUAMRA AND SJB HEMADASA IS NOT STRONG ENOUGH TO BRING THIS SITUATION TO EDUCATE THE PEOPLE.PEOPLE WILL BE SUFFERING AS THEIR MOUTHS WILL BE SHUT WITH NEW REGULATIONS VERY SOON.

Thanks Prof. David for views expressed, history appears to be repeating itself.
1956 – Sinhala Buddhist mobs were unleashed which was uncontrollable.
Now Sinhala Buddhist mob has been unleashed again. There is chance that racism will be whipped up further to cover up poor economic performance
1961 – Import of luxury goods was banned due to foreign exchange shortage. Economy went from bad to worse resulting in shortages and unemployment.
Now again import of luxury goods has been banned due to lack of foreign exchange. This is likely to continue because foreign exchange reserves is unlikely to improve due to Covid 19 affecting exports, tourism and foreign remittances.
1970 – Suppression of Tamils was on the increase leading to youths taking up to arms
Now again Suppression of Tamils will take place especially when Tamils demand justice. With inaction of selfish Tamil leaders, youth may resort to arms.
1977 – Leaning towards USA antagonizing India leading to breach of sovereignty.
Now leaning towards China antagonizing India whose tolerance may not last long and may intervene. This time India will not trust Srilanka to make the same mistake.

India will not trust or trust, Sri Lanka never ever regretting also. Sri Lanka teach very good lesson to India not interfere with Sri Lanka’s giving best guard of honor to Ex-Indian Prime minister Rajiv Gandhi by brave Sinhalese Sailor and finally, LTTE gave the best salute to the homeland of Tamil’s Tamil Nadu

In this Colombo Telegraph writers writing bullshits to please Terrorists and Extremists Oriented Tamils and Muslims. In this election, 97% MPS are Sinhalese Aryans elected to the Parliament. This shows Sri Lanka belongs to Sinhalese Aryans and moreover CIA gave clear picture of Sri Lanka. 74.9% Sinhalese Aryans, 11.2% Tamils, 4.2% Indian Tamils, 9.2% Sinhalese Muslims and 0.5% others.

USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand do not belong to Europeans though they form 90% of the population. That applies to Sri Lanka also, which is reflected in BJP stand of a Hindu land that has become a Buddhist majority. Archaeologists and Historians in India due to emerging evidence say that the concept of Aryan and Dravidian was put forward by British for divide rule and that all Indians are one and the same. British wanted to show that they civilized the Central Asians (Indo-Aryan people) who in turn civilized the Dravidians. So this Aryan myth has been blown off. Keeladi and other excavations in deep Tamil Nadu have demonstrated that it is older than Indus valley civilization and that civilization first started there and moved northwards to Indus Valley and beyond, and not the other way. Civilization similar to India has been found in parts of Sri Lanka which together with genetic studies have proved that the original people were the same as in Tamil Nadu. Scientifically it is proved that Sinhalese were originally Tamils who took a different identity similar to Malayalees. Naturally those who have been fed with Mahawamsa fabrications cannot accept the truth. BJP on the rampage, will correct this anomaly very soon.

“British wanted to show that they civilized the Central Asians (Indo-Aryan people) who in turn civilized the Dravidians.”
          What British at the time?
Britain was a Roman colony. Movement outside the island by the Brits (really the English) was to the West much after the Spaniards were there.
They moved to Asia by sea at least two centuries after the Portuguese planted themselves.
Max Muller (a German by birth though) glorified Sanskrit.
Robert Caldwell who coined the term ‘Dravidian’ wrote “A Comparative Grammar of the Dravidian or South Indian Family of Languages” enabling the assertion of the independence of Tamil from Sanskrit.

You seemed to be an ignorant man . I have been following the findings in Mohanjadaro and harrappa for over 45 years and the findings in Keeladi for the last 2 years. It is now conclusively proven that the Indus valley civilization and the Keeladi, Keelakkarai civilizations are inter related.

Tamil or proto Tamil was the language used in Indus valley civilization. The Sanskrit speaking Aryans have been ruled out as the founders of Indus valley.

Just ignore that confirmed intellectual idiot.
Following evidence has been placed to claim that Tamil civilization is older.
              1. Stone tool found in Sembiyankandi, Mayiladuthurai with inscription similar to that found in Indus Valley objects, and dated older. It was proved that the rock used to make the tool is found only in Tamil Nadu, which dismissed objection by North Indians that it was made in Indus Valley and taken south.
              2. Rice grains found in one of the urns unearthed in Adichchanallur burial site, when carbon dating was done, designated it to pre-Indus valley era.
Further to that, DNA of a skeleton found in Rakhigarhi, Haryana a part of Indus Valley, did not have R1/A1 haplogroup found in Iranian farmers/nomads which shows that there was no Aryan mix. North Indian Archaeologists tried to match the DNA of the skeleton with several North Indian people and failed and finally it matched only with Irular tribe in Nilagiri, Tamil Nadu.
With modern technology, further discoveries will be made to prove that Tamil civilization is the oldest and continuous one. Fortunately there are fair minded north Indian archaeologists like Prof. Raj Vedam who are supportive.

                G. Thirumoorthy…who led a young team during the first phase of the excavation…also said that the potsherd was “a unique find in the excavation of the Iron Age period, especially in South India.” In other urn-burial sites in India, potsherds with such appliqué motifs have not been found so far.
One expert, who found them “amazing” and “fantastic”, said these motifs could be as old as 700 B.C. Arun Malik, Assistant Archaeologist with ASI, said: “Normally, such motifs are not found on pottery as they are generally seen only in pre-historic cave paintings.”

Even 1000 BC is ‘marginally’ younger than Indus Valley civilization (3300 to to 1300 BC, in its peak form from 2600 to 1900 BC.

The inscriptions of burial urns are primitive and incomparable with the text of stone inscriptions that came much later.

Taking your claims with the essential pinch of salt, may I ask, even if what you say is true, how come that the DNA matching is with Irular and no other ‘Dravidian’ people?
Could the Irular be converts to Tamil the way the Salagama were to Sinhala, and many Telugus to Tamil?

The point established is that civilization started in the Tamilnadu region a few centuries earlier than considered, not millennia.

            Dear SJ,

German and Sinhala Langauges belong to the same category. That they call ” indo german langagues”. This I got to know at the time, I started learning the langauge 3 decades ago.
            .
            Language family

            Indo-European

            Indo-Iranian
            Indo-Aryan
            Southern Zone
            Insular Indic
            Sinhala
            Btw,
adding the term ” aryans” is not welcome in Germany yet today although the WWII was 75 years ago.

The very same is the term ” nationalist” – europeans would not use the term “nationalist” but srilanken led by Rajaskhes do:

People would not know the real meaning and usage of the terms but they continue to use the term. Very negative to europeans if they would read srrilanken tabloids.

And many in srilanka dont know the real meaning of FEDERALISM – they believe that would partion the a country.

And also some believe psychiatry is no different from psychology.

That program – YATHARUPA telecasted by SLRC few years ago – was the only TV program that focused on the facts and figures of the life in order to improve the awareness of the average – that was cancelled by the people because mythologists would not want facts to be part of the society.
            :
Today s situation in the country is akin to the state of GREECE few hundreds of years ago.

Not “indo german langagues” but Indo-Aryan languages.
Germanic languages are a family of Aryan languages that are distinct from the Latin family.
Sinhala had lost many of the ‘Aryan features’ like grammatical gender long long ago.

Leelagemalli, please watch this video : Indian civilization : The untold story revisited / Raj Vedam/ Aryan invasion/ Migration theory and similar discourses by him and others. Aryan invasion myth has been completely blown off and historians and archaeologists bar few bigots have accepted that Indians are one and the same. Interestingly only 11% of north Indians have R1/A1 haplogroup which is characteristically found in Iranian farmers/ nomads. Nomenclature of Indo-European languages is long gone, and they say Sanskrit and Hinduism originated and evolved in India and not brought from outside as previously claimed. Sinhala is also an Indian language based on Tamil with mixture of Sanskrit and local dialect. At one stage everybody in this region spoke some form of Tamil, and that is the reason why Vijaya’s friends, Kuveni’s people and Pandyan princesses were able to understand each other.

This anecdote is from my scholarly friend Dr Kasynathan, now in Australia.
A character was holding forth about the origin of words on the fringes of a conference hall during the 5th International Tamil Conference in Madurai in 1981. (Of course all words had to come from Tamil).
My friend asked him humbly “Sir could you say how tyhe word salt came about?”.
                  Snap came the answer:
“Where does salt come from? Sea, isn’t it?
“What is in the sea? Waves (alai in Tamil)!
“And ‘alai’ became ‘salai’ which became ‘sal’ which became ‘salt’!”
                  *
I do not know for how long Kasy laughed. But I have made quite a few laugh aloud with it (and quite a few frown, depending on the way they ‘loved Tamil’).

You are a one big sad case. No Tamil believes all the words came from Tamil you are exaggerating for making fun out of Tamil claim for antiquity and Primary Classical language status. It is not us Tamils it is the linguists and other scholars who believe Tamil is one of the oldest language of the world if not the oldest. Before you talk through your arse again do a google search to find what is the oldest language of the world. Also most of the scholars agree that Tamil unlike the other primary Classical languages like Sanskrit, Latin, ancient Greek and Hebrew is not a dead language in that context Tamil is the only Primary language which has survived and still spoken by nearly 100 million people in the world over 5000 years.

Are you going to challenge me on this claim. I am waiting for your response.

I’m so happy to note that all of us (where’s Champa? – Can I claim to have convinced you of her sincerity, honesty and intelligence, although we disagree on some matters?) seem to be working harmoniously and constructively together!

                Dear Mr SM,
thanks for that. You nailed it. I love you guys more today. I respect CHAMPA more and more. But those low lives that brand me as a KOTI supporter, I have no words to express my antipathy.

What the germans are used to say ” gute Menschenkenntnisse – insight into human nature” you have got Mr SM. But sometimes, you are too quick to make your decisions. That Sepal A is not yet identificiable to me, because his videos are mixed I would say.

You focus only one single faculty when you bring up the articles. But you have lot more areas I believe you could do lot more good work SIR. If I were there, I would have supported you, but I keep busy with my job 24/7. Now I have no doubt, I should come and see you whenever I am down there SL, I dont have any relatives that I consider as my lovelyones, since most of them voted for rascals during the last election. I simply cant understand them. They believe, I am naive not to kneel down MAHARAJA. Not even my dogs would kneel down before Rajapakhes if I may say so.

                  .
I’m not going to waste my time given the very short time that I have on this planet.

Sinhalese Muslims same as Muslim Indians are Hindus. Indonesia was a Buddhist country bygone days. Buddhists Indonesians became Muslim Indonesians the same as Afghanistan. Who are Muslim Americans? Who is Black Muslim Americans? Maha Barath was Hindustan. Hindus converted to Muslims. They are called Indian Muslims

Delusional mad man, Chingkallams are not Aryans but largely descended from South Indian Dravidian low castes from Thamizh Nadu and then Tamizh Kerala. Just look at them , do they look Aryan? Everything about them reeks of Thamizh Dravidian South India. The Muslims of Sri Lanka have never identified themselves as Chingkallams. 99% of them speak Thamizh and again are South Indian Dravidian coverts to Islam. They also originate from Thamizh Nadu and then Thamizh Kerala. There is bit of Arab in some of them but they are basically Thamizh Dravidian from South India. You Chingkalla racists now want to kill and discriminate them but want to falsely count them as Chingkallams , even when they do not want to , in order to falsely increase your percentage.

please add links to support your thoughts. If anyone would stand against Rajakshes rascals means not necessarily they are terrorist okay ? If you have some sanity you may know this very well.

There are at least some millions stood against them, and would never support them. I have been ant-rajakashe stylle politics from the day one. But I am not a terrorist. So does Mr SM. He is anot a terorrist or someone else inthat line.

We dont care about race, religion or any thing in that line when treating to srilanken. We are all srilankens and we should all get treated with the same spoon. Basta.

    Dear Prof .Kumar.

Sinhala_Man rased the issue of rejected votes.

There is also a news item in the Daily News.
The rejected votes which totalled more than 700,000 at this year’s general elections which is higher than the 249,435 which the UNP and 445,000 obtained by the JJB

    http://www.dailymirror.lk/breaking_news/Rejected-votes-higher-than-the-UNP-JJB/108-193474

I am also intrigued by the number of independent candidates. More that 7500. what is the total number of votes

This is a new kind of vote rigging by the Rajapaksa’s

I also address this to the EC Ratnajeevan Hoole.
    He is unusually quiet.

        Dear Rajash,

Our people committed HARAKIRI. Now nothing can work otherway around, times ahead will be even worst than an era, prior to 2015. By 2015, entire world stood against Rajakshes criminals, and they did not even allow MR the most abusive man in srilanken mafia politics to enter oxford assembly. Remember ? Now with Dr Merkel and others in europe turning to shape up this part of the world, their focus is not out of srilanka and that region.I am telling you, if some sort of good politics based on liberals would have been the case, we could achieve that much.
Whoever whatever being said and done, in hindsight, if anygood thing to the country is done, it was UNP.
Of coruse, that had/have some sort of disadvantages, after a sometime, since srilankens in general would not maintain anything properly the way it should be. Be it roads or other areas in public sector let to be damaged and start from the begining once Kenda has become Kanda (a fibre level has turned out to be mountaineous), that has lot to do with the education and culture being introduced by THIRISAN leaders of Rajaakshe sort. If any good leaders were there, they were JR, CBK and RW.

And what about rejected votes you idiot..??
      .
      Yes.
Rejected votes are more than the votes of UNP and JJB.
      So what..??
      .
      In 2020 election rejected 744,373 out of 12,343,302 (6.03%)
      In 2015 election rejected 517,123 out of 11,684,098 (4.43%)
      In 2010 election rejected 596,972 out of 8,630,689 (6.92%)
      In 2004 election rejected 534,948 out of 9,797,680 (5.46%)
      In 2000 election rejected 481,155 out of 9,128,823 (5.27%)
      .

“I am also intrigued by the number of independent candidates. More that 7500. “
This is an issue, but not a serious “new kind of vote rigging by the Rajapaksa’s”.
      *
It makes minimal impact on voting, but each group and party enjoys fee air time that is abused by phantom organizations and bogus groups.
Also, such abuse is not the preserve of one party.
If Rajapaksa’s people indulge in silly games, they too will lose votes, may be more than their rivals.
      *
Such things were there before. I am not sure if there was another Rajapaksa contesting the presidential election sometime ago. Such childish tricks are irritating but the electorate is too well informed to ignore them.

      Rejected vote
      2004: 534,948 (5.46%) Turnout: 75.96%
      2010: 596,972 (6.9%) Turnout: 61.26%
      2015: 517,123 (4.43%) Turnout: 77.66%
      2020: 744,373 (6.03) Turnout: 75.89%
      *
There is a weak correlation with turnout.
(Average spoilage is around 5.7%. This year’s is not as high as in 2010 after the end of the war.)
With spoiling at around 5%, who is to blame if parties poll only 2 or 3% of the votes cast?
      *
To me, willfully spoiling a ballot paper is a clear political statement, which I have often recommended.

        SJ,
        .
That can hardly be the case when there are between 20 and 40 groups contesting. If the ballot paper is spoilt after taking at least a cursory look at what each of those groups is offering, spoiling becomes the lazy guys option.
        .
I know that yourself are always alert and vigilant.
        .
Your spoiling of a ballot paper will therefore be quite different from almost all others.

I have not had the chance to read an article based on lanken fake media and the destruction being done to the society. I think this can be a good topic to Mr SM,.

I can give you lot more ideas me being out of the country and how I feel about local media in SL each time, I read/watch them. But we still need to gather lot more info from the locals. We can also add links as references.

SJ, please you may help Mr SM to bring this article. A year ago so, I raised this issue with Mr Amarasiri who was then a big vocal on FAKE media behaviours in the country. I really miss him today and NATIVE vedda is in the view Mr Amarasiiri is keeping well. However, something huge should have happened him not being able to return to this forum.
. Today, thanks to the silence of capable seniors, we have reached ot the levels, that fake perceptions could twist entire society.

            PART A

            Dear LM,
            .
What I might try to write is an article regarding Education, but be prepared for many shortcomings!
            .
As you have said, you were educated in many schools, I hope that they were interesting and I hope that they were co-educational, unlike my three Schools.
            .
It is clear that your schools have, collectively, educated you very well. Couldn’t have been better.
            .
Why I say that is because you display excellent attitudes and values. Of course, much credit must be given to you, yourself, and to the background you come from. I think that I have inflicted far too much of myself on all readers; nobody now wants to know any more about me! In your case, I know very few of the details, but I now consider you one of my best friends. It is your duty now to properly identify you and establish means of communication with me.

Please dont behave like JVPrs and Nagananda though their aims are pure. JVPrs could achieve lot more if they worked with grass root level of people better. If american citizen Basil could move grass root level why JVPrs failed ? Nagananda tried to achieve his good voters through his buddhistic nature. Current day srilanka is filled with pseudo buddhists wearing PIRITH noole in a thick form, but most of them are high criminals or their supporters. I stopped myself kneeling down before SIVURU wearers for my own reasons, since then I feel much better. I also stopped giving them alms as had done before. Instead I give dry rations and rice packets to those who are really in need. That is how I changed my way during the last 3 years.
              :
You need to choose the timeworthy topics giving the priority to that.

I can provide you my inputs if you want me to. But that I should do via Emails. My identity should be safegaurded so that I wont get any kind of threats from Rajakshe mad dogs. Lately, I thought that hired mad dogs are after me. I felt my gosh, what is going to face next. However, they were Italians that had some other issues with one of our colleagues from Milano.

            PART B
            .
Far too much emphasis is placed in Sri Lanka on the size of schools, and their so-called status and reputation. It must be true that there are schools that are really bad in many ways, and others (in Uva-Wellassa!) that are poorly equipped. From what we have seen of rj1952, he has received a very poor education – he’s told us at St Joseph’s, Darley Road, Colombo 10. I know that that’s funny, because my only son-in-law has been excellently educated there.
            .
What should all our schools be imparting to students attending them?
            .
A – good values – already dealt with
            .
            B – an enjoyable childhood
            .
C – they must develop the full personality of the child, so that the adult becomes like “leelagemalli”!
            .
            D. – you must be equipped to earn a living, and live a full life, in which you can communicate effectively with others
            .
E – he (always read as he/she) must learn how to vote at Elections!
            .
There’s no point lengthening this comment. As you say, I’ve got to write all this in an article .

            .
SJ may be the best commenter on CT. It is really through his comments that I have got to know him. I know many things about him, obviously, but there’s nothing like having a Skype chat, or even better, meeting face to face. My Skype name is panini.edirisinhe (no “g” there), but I keep turning it off nowadays. There appear to be better (more economical) ways of speaking to each other now.

            PART D
            .
SJ being a professor of engineering
(now retired) is obviously more savvy with these things that a “gambada iskole mahattaya” like me. The “relationship” that I have built up with him on this site is complicated by the fact that there is little love lost between him and Professor Ratnajeevan Hoole, whom I have got to know quite well because Dr RatnaRajan Hoole and I were classmates ages ago. I tend to blame SJ for many things; it may be because I don’t know all of him.
            .
As for Jeevan Hoole, he, too, is a great and clever man, who is also absolutely honest, sincere and courageous. Wonderful guy, but he (like all of us humbler guys, like all human beings) has what I think are certain faults. He has done wonderful work as an Elections Commissioner, but then, he writes about all that. He sometimes strays into the fields of History and Religion – I wish he wouldn’t, and I have told him so. So, be prepared for “indiscretions” by him in those areas – one never knows what he will say next.
            .
As for SJ, yes, he should write a few articles..

Fascism today exists outside any book of worked examples.
I think that direct comparison with Germany in the early thirties is inappropriate.
Fascism in the Third World is unlike what was there nine decades ago in Europe.
The way it grows even on minorities is unlike the rather monolithic phenomenon in Europe then.
Today’s Third World Fascist leader is a global underdog. That forces his/her fascism to display superficially progressive features to conceal total submission to imperialism.

People in Sri Lanka are more prone to thugs – a citizen’s note on election results

The people of Sri Lanka are amazing !

When we see the result of this election, we feel a fear of the future of Sri Lanka and the aspirations of the people. I wonder if the people of a country can be so blind. At a time when not only Sri Lanka but the whole world is in crisis, the Rajapaksas have gained so much power might be for their end.
The people have given power to the Rajapaksas unconditionally. That in itself is a challenge for them.

The people have rejected the demand for an Independent free and fair Election Commission for peaceful elections. (This was a slogan on the Pohottuwa stage). Alas, this is the strangest country in the world.

    2. Sunil Handunneththi the Chairman of the COPE Committee who exposed the corruptions of public money has been kicked out and film actress, Geetha Kumarasinghe has been elected

    3. An actor named Uddhika Premaratne has got the highest number of preferential votes in the district (maybe because he acted in Dutugemunu movie and killed Elara)

When parties or alliances split, the membership is traumatized and public support falters.
It happened to the UF government when the LSSP in 1975 and CP in 1976 left followed by a tiny fraction of the SLFP.
Things were made worse in 1977 by rejecting any no-contest deal with the SLFP. The LSSP, CP and SLFP dissenters formed a left alliance to contest very nearly every seat in the South.
    *
Electoral arithmetic cannot be a matter of adding the votes of the parts of a split alliance, but should count the impact of the public’s disaffection caused by feuds between factions.
The left alliance of 1977 targeted the SLFP more than it did the UNP, a very serious threat to the Left as a whole, and paid the price: it was fully wiped out with many forfeitures of deposit and several sitting members pushed to third place or below in their electorates. Fortunately Sarath Muttettuwegama returned on an election petition, much after. The SLFP suffered to be reduced to 8 seats.
    *
The split in the UNP in 2020 could at least have been plastered over, had SP conducted himself with some grace in victory. His backers wanted RW’s blood. SP sided with them.

      Exactly,
1+1 is not equal to 2, but 1+1>2.

      This is called Synergy.

Synergy is defined as,”The interaction or cooperation of two or more organizations, substances, or other agents to produce a combined effect greater than the sum of their separate effects”.

Now caravan has passed. Whatever barking would not make any difference to the forward move. You guys can cast doubt on rejected vote as you have been comprehensively beaten. Really you are questioning the ability of party representatives who are in the counting booths as all rejected votes are shown to them for verifying. Have they lodge a complaint to EC? Just stop BS talk and think about advising the elected government when the government take wrong decisions if you guys really love Sri Lanka and wants to see good for the Country.

Thinking at depth I state another possibility. The format of the voting slip was somewhat confusing to (no offence here) the rural folk. Even from Colombo my domestic when asked two days before election, replied ” I am voting for Gotabaya”. When we said he is not contesting, she said his party. The voting slip had numerous parties and then the preferences below. I am sure many voters would not have known how to put a valid vote.

Perera and the other Triumphalist Buddhist/ Catholic Sinhalese

Please take my word seriously, Srilanka is now a completely divided country. Gotabaya won a clear mandate in Srilanka ( Sinhala nation ) to be their president. In TamilEelam he was treated as a war Criminal and as such people overwhelmingly voted for the Tamil parties to show that they are indeed a separate nation. By doing this Tamils and Tamil speaking people have rejected Gotabaya and Mahinda as florigen aliens , enemies who waged war against their nation.

We Tamils are now seeking the UN mandate to bring in UN peace keeping forces to police the Sinhala armed forces atrocities in our homeland in the NORTH EAST of Srilanka. If UN doesn’t listen to the popular will of the Tamil speaking people then we will have no alternative but to ask India to send another peace keeping force under UN mandate ( auspices ) as provided for in the INDO- Srilanka accord. Long live Srilanka ! Long Live Tamil Eelam !

No one will read or patronise this web site , if only racist Chingkalla Kurangus like you post garbage here. It is because of us , that there is healthy debate and information given here and everyone respects this website. Just look at the so called Chingkalle racist website Lanak Lies or Spur. Who respects or patronizes those websites. Only racist Chingkallams like you. Are you a Chingkalla Berewa( Paraiyan)? I belong to Miss Piggy caste

      PIRABAKARAN,
Do we have to keep on telling these dumbos who do not know the history of Sinhale again and again that North and East is where Sinhala Kingdoms Anuradhapura (377 BC – 1017AD) and Polonnaruwa (1056 AD – 1310 AD) existed. ‘Para’ Demala invaders destroyed those Kingdoms.
‘Para’ Demalu (Tamils after 1911 thanks to British) in the North who are the descendants of Dravida slaves brought by Portuguese to work in tobacco plantations are occupying the land of Sinhala Kingdoms. The history of ‘Para’ Demalu in the North started after Portuguese colonized this country. So please return the land that Demalu occupy to rightful owners and return to your ancestral home across the Palk Strait.

        Eagle,
“All Tamils in Sri Lanka are from Hindusthan brought to Sinhale by colonial parasites. “
Why do you keep repeating this utter rubbish? Do you not know that the latest DNA research shows that Jaffna Tamils are more closely related to Upcountry Sinhalese than to Indian Tamils?

        https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://www.nature.com/articles/jhg2013112%23:~:text%3DThe%2520majority%2520of%2520Sinhalese%2520and,themselves%2520on%2520both%2520PC%2520axes.%26text%3DIt%2520was%2520evident%2520that%2520Up,when%2520compared%2520with%2520Indian%2520Tamils.&ved=2ahUKEwiU-Nmwq__qAhWIWisKHVsTCyMQFjAEegQIChAJ&usg=AOvVaw1L1e6KQQ2r11Hh_RsBffru

Quote: “The majority of Sinhalese and Tamil subgroups form close genetic proximities among themselves on both PC axes. … It was evident that Up-country Sinhalese are genetically closer to Sri Lankan Tamils. On the other hand, Sri Lankan Tamil subgroups were closer to each other when compared with Indian Tamils”
Even a racist like you should be able to understand that this disproves your theories about colonial parasites.
        Go take your pills.

Which Mahavidyalaya did you go to ? Read your fairy tale Mahavansa even that bull shit accepts that there were Tamils in Srilanka at least from 300 BC. You Sinhalayas are not native to Srilanka. only connection you fools have to Srilanka is through your maternal Tamil connection . If you are still confused let me elaborate on it , when Kallathoni Vijaya and his followers arrived in this country there were already Tamils ( Nagas ) living here. Vijayas people married Tamil women from the Pandya kingdom and intermingled with the yakkas and nagas who were already in the Island that is how the Sinhala race was born.

I am sure in the Mahavidyalaya you went to they would have taught you about Elara V Gemunu story, then what bull crap are you writing ? Grow up man.

    Mr Prabha,

Inspite of the anti Muslim Rhetoric by some sinhalayas, the overwhelming number of muslims in Sinhala areas seem to have voted fpr Gota (Urged to do so by Ali Sabri etc). In the East most have voted for Sinhala parties (Mainly SJB). Muslims know that inspite of the recent anti muslim wave on the countrry they still get a better deal from the sinhalayas. So this Tamil speaking business to include the Muslims into your camp will not work. Try to prove us wrong. As far as the Tamils voting for Tamil parties is nothing new. Even in Tamil areas Tamil parties aligned with Gota have secured quite a number of seats.

Yes, UN will listen to you to come and police the tamil areas. If not ask India. Rajive Gandhi Ghost will surely help you.

You are an educated professional as far as I am aware. Even for a man of your ilk, the triumphalism otherwise known as Sinhala Tribalism has got to your head. The way things are at the moment in Srilanka what do you expect us Tamils to do ? Perish en masse or fight for our survival ? You Sinhalese have left us with no alternative but to fight for our survival. In that context what I have said earlier sounds reasonable. The Ghost of Rajiv has been laid to rest a long time ago by the Modi government and your friendship with an expansionist China is not going to allow you all to play China against India any more.
As never before the geo pollical reality dictates that India keeps a permanent foot hold in Srilanka in order to control it’s territorial waters . North East coast is absolutely essential for Indian security and that can be secured for India by creating a division in the country along the ethnic lines and Tamils controlling the Bay of Bengal coast. Indo- Srilanka accord is an instrument which gives the legitimacy for India to intervene , also Tamils in the diaspora are campaigning successfully to legitimise their claim for a separate state as there is a structural genocide of Tamils under Rajapakses’ regimes.

        PIRABAKARAN ,
“triumphalism otherwise known as Sinhala Tribalism has got to your head”
Whilst expressing my deep gratitude to the SL forces, I completely dispute your above statement. Like the Jews of Israel, we sinhalayas have a huge attachmnet to our country. This is the country that gave birth to the sinhala culture , language etc. Sinhala people are linked to this Island. I do not think even you would dispute the fact that the Tamil language and the culture was born in Tamil Nadu.
Sinhala history books have overplayed (In my opinion) the importance of Vijaya. This is done I believe to show out North Indian Connection. Before Vijayas arrival there were 4 tribes known as siwhela. The langauge spoken at the time would have been very different to the present day sinhala language. wether it is hela or sinhala it is the same people at a different stage of the evolution process.
During a certain period of the history there was a Tamil kingdom, but that was restricted to an area which is smaller than present day northern province (Most of the times). Your demand for a seperate state including East is not justifiable. It is the belief of most sinhalayas that you are aiming for the whole country.

          Ravi Perera
It is unfortunate that Sinhala racists want the world to believe Tamils originated in Tamil nadu previously known as Madras Presidency ALONE.. Not only Sinhalese but also other anti-Tamil groups like the world to believe that the Tamils as a race are only confined to South east Indian state of Tamilnadu. THIS IS FURTHER FROM THE TRUTH. If you look at the maps of South India you will see the Tamil territory has always been much bigger than the present Tamil nadu. Tamil is the root language of all the Dravidian languages. Tamil related races ( Dravidian ) lived all over India before the arrival of Aryans to the Sub continent some 3 thousand years ago .Ambedkar states the Nagas are Tamils who at one time not only populated the entire Subcontinent but also the Island of Eelam and parts of South east Asia.
Eelam means homeland. Tamils have lived in the Indus valley and beyond in places like southern Iran known as Elam and Sumaria. In the Sangam literature there is mention of a poet called Elathu Pootham Thevanar ( poet from Eelam in Srilanka who participated in the Sangam meet from Eelam some 2500 years ago. ). Sangam period was over 2500 years ago. The Sangam age was the period of history of ancient Tamilnadu and Kerala and parts of Srilanka then known as Tamilakam.

              Dear Ravi

You are a Sinhalese and quite rightly you are proud of your race. I am a Tamil and I am proud of my race and it’s achievements, origins etc. Whether Tamil is the oldest living language in the world or not, whether it is related to Korean and Japanese etc you can access a lot of information by doing a google search. I don’t want to bore you with all that information on a debate like this.

About the other things you have mentioned about Tamil diaspora also I will say you being a Sinhalese will not inclined to believe our achievements easily but now Kamala Devi Harris the presumptive vice presidential nominee ( her mother is Tamil ) could become the next US vice president and may run in the nest presidential election after JOE Biden. Mr. Moses Nagamootu is the current Prime Minister of Guyana a south American country , he is of Tamil origin. Former Singapore president SR Nathan was Tamil so is the deputy Prime minister of Singapore Thaman.Tamils are becoming powerful all over the world. Can you deny that ?

These are all not garbage but real facts. King Dutugemunu was not Sinhala but belonged to Naga tribe.

All these Names you have mentioned are of Tamil Nadu origin.
(Those Carribean primie ministers though carrying Tamil names have nothing to do with the Tamil culture , they have been long removed). Tamil Diaspora from Tamil Nadu has produced many great individuals all over the world-Google CEO,Kamal etc (just like the rest of Indians) but bulk of Tamil Nadu lives in abject poverty. So far from being powerful.
As for King Dutugemunu, wether he was Naga, Raksha , Deva is a matter for a debate. He certainly was closer to an original hela tribe. Wether it is Hela or Sinhala it is the same people at a different stage of the jouney of evolution

Moses Nagamutoo visited Tamil Nadu and spoke at a seminar in Madras recently . He also has taken steps to teach Tamil to the hundred thousand people of Tamil origin in Guyana. Singapore deputy Prime minister Thaman , Malaysian billionaire Anandakrishnan etal are of Jaffna Tamil origin so is the New chief of staff of Kamala Harris Rohini Kosoglu whose parents Dr. Wijeyadevendran Ravindran and Shobhana Ravindran hail from Jaffna, Srilanka.

Tamil nadu is the second richest state in India after Maharashtra. Maharashtra is in the first slot only because of the financial capital of India Bombay being located there otherwise Tamil nadu will be the number one developed state of India. Tamil nadu with over 83 million people is a very important state as most of the nuclear scientists and other scientists are from there. In India 3 Tamils won Nobel prize for science from Tamil nadu state. You are deluding yourself by saying most of Tamil nadu lives in abject poverty. SRilanka is a poor country, if we Tamils stop remitting any money back home most of the Sinhalese will eat shit and sell their wifes to Arab sheiks and their children’s tender arses to the European paedophiles in the name of tourism Sinhalese are shameless fools.

The borders of Tamilakam was Tirupathi hills in the north, Cape Comorin in the south and the two oceans on the east and west. That is where Tamils evolved into Tamils from a group of proto-south Dravidian speaking people. This island has always been the island of the Sinhalese, and no part of it has ever been included in Tamilakam.

Eelam means the country of the Sinhalese:
            https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a1/References_for_Sinhala_-_Eelam_-_Ilam.png

Boundaries of the Tamil country according to Sikandiyar, supposedly a pupil of the legendary Agastiyar:
            வேங்கடங் குமரி தீம்புனற் பெளவமென்
            றின்னான் கெல்லை தமிழது வழக்கே.
Tanslation: Tamil prevails within the four limits of Venkatam, Kumari and the seas.

The Dravidian expansion from the southern neolithic complex in mid central India in the area of Krishna valley into southern India happened much later than what the Tamils think. Dravidalogists date it to after 1000 B.C. and Dravidian and historical linguists (Kamil Zvelebil, Krishnamurti, Andronov, Southworth) date the arrival of Dravidian speakers to Tamilnadu area a few centuries later. That’s much later than what the Tamils think, but that’s what the linguistic and archaeological evidence says.

            • 0
              0

Kamil Zvelebil says in his encyclopedia entry: “During the 1st millennium BC, while Aryanization steadily progressed in north India, the Dravidian speaking newcomers began to mix with the Negritos and Proto-Australoids in the south; this process of acculturation continued during the period from approximately 1200 to 600 BC. A movement of the Aryans into the south of India began sometime about 1000 BC. Before the 5th century BC, Proto-South Dravidian was probably still one language, but with two strongly marked dialects.” So in 5th century BC there was no Tamil language as per one of the most respected Dravidian linguists. The Vijaya myth says Vijaya arrived here in the 6th century BC. So the Sinhala language he presumably brought here is much older than Tamil. Sinhala Brahmi inscriptions from 6th century BC have been found at Anuradhapura by prof. Allchin and Connigham in 1995/96 and another find by Deraniyagala in 1989/90 which was a century older. (New linguistic research not yet reviewed or accepted by mainstream scholars point to Sinhala being much older than anything Vijaya could have brought here in 543 BC).

” Sinhala history books have overplayed (In my opinion) the importance of Vijaya.
          Ravi,
Your people believing the Tamils are asking for whole country. Your people believes lion cup Vijaya is result of an Odessa woman sleeping with a lion. She was a princess, but slept with a lion. Royal passes their royalty title through male progenies. But the Jaffna Kanja addict Telegu Pundit, who ran out of Kanchi, fearing of the religious war raging in TN that time, claimed the Lankawe Raj for this wild animal.
You believe the connection of you have with Odessa justified that bestiality story, though over played eventually. But the story is not confirmed in there. I see there are only few Pali (30%) words to connect you to Odessa. That all of it. But I see another 30 Sanskrit word in Sinhalas. I see Sangamitta story also there. But you don’t have story to claim that you are from Varanasi or Bodhgaya, or Ahmadabad.

what do you mean by” read a few serious scholars if you want to know reality “

I think it is you who are bluffing, go and read the writings on ancient Indian history particularly on Indus Valley civilization by the following archeologists, Anthropologist and philologists. Sir Alexander Cunningham, Sir John Marshal, Asko Parpola, Iravatham Mahadevan, MacAlpine, S.R. Rao, G.R.Hunter, Sidney Smith, Russian Dravidian specialist Nikita Guror

Are you saying all these eminent scholars who found Dravidian primarily Tamil is the language of Indus Valley are wrong ? and what comes out of your anus is the truth ? you are a sad fool, I told you that I have been researching on Indus valley civilization for over 45 years what you have been writing here is rather pathetic nonsense primarily intended to insult the Tamil language and the Tamil speakers. Go and tell some ignoramus fool like you of your drivels. Go back to school and learn basic Indian ancient history.
