Sri Lanka Says Canada Has Sought To Use Its Funds As A Political Tool

“Canada’s suspension of voluntary Commonwealth funds announcement is not a surprise. It may be recalled that when the Canadian Prime Minister announced his non attendance of the 2013 CHOGM in Colombo, he also alluded to the issue of cutting back his Government’s contributions to the Commonwealth.” says the Ministry of External Affairs of Sri Lanka.

Sending an email to Colombo Telegraph the MEA Spokesman said; “during conversation with a Canadian Government representative in Sri Lanka over a year ago it was mentioned that Canada was considering the rationalization of their contributions to international organizations including the Commonwealth.

“When Sri Lanka was to assume Chairmanship of the Commonwealth, the Canadian Government sought to make their reservations in this regard as the reason for the cut.

“Concern has been expressed amongst the wider Commonwealth that the countries which provide the majority of the finances seek to unduly influence the working of the Organization.

“This action by Canada stands in evidence of such machinations.

“Regrettably the Canadian Government has sought to use its voluntary funds as a political tool based on the dictates of electoral compulsions, thereby holding the membership of the wider Commonwealth to ransom, through competing claims for power.

“Further, the relentless action pursued by Canada on Sri Lanka, will only seek to undermine the delicate reconciliation process, as the bona fides of the basis of that Governments trajectory is questionable and not in tandem with the interests of the people of Sri Lanka. It is the GoSL which is best placed to continue the evolution of a home grown solution for its people in accordance with a realistic time frame.

“This action taken by Canada is at variance with the underlying spirit of the Commonwealth as a voluntary Organization of sovereign nations, with diversity being its hallmark.

“Sri Lanka upholds Commonwealth values and has never sought their change. Baird’s comment in justifying Canada’s action is a castigation of the organization as a whole,  and believe that the wider Commonwealth stands in solidarity against such manipulations. “

Can GLP give some reasonable time – one year or two year, rather indicating realistic time frame for home grown solution. If they want to pass any law or other stuffs in parliament which is favour to GOSL they do need any time frame. It will happen immediately. But find a solution or solve this ongoing problem they need realistic time.
    1948- 1983…….getting bad….day by day
    1983- 2009……worst…..hourly basis
2009- present…..tamil people does not have anything left for their survival in Srilanka( wipe out process speeding up by GOSL, )sooner whole tamil community will disappear from Srilanka…..for this home grown solution GLP & GOSL looking for funds from Commonwealth and other western institution in the name of development

During last UNHCR session ….Pakistan, India, Srilanka is worried about who is going to finance ……very interesting ….Why GLP is looking for financial assistance from other countries. What happened your’s and GOSL’s bank balances. Why can not use it this time to replace Canadian Funds and exersie your super power with other corrupt nations.

      Kumarb,
You say; “Can GLP give some reasonable time – one year or two year, rather indicating realistic time frame for home grown solution.”

GLP is still trying to find out with whom he has to reconcile with. LTTE terrorists or the Diaspora. LTTE terrorized the people of Sri Lanka with suicide bombing and the other funded these activities. Whom do you think SL should reconcile with?

What LTTE did then, Rajapakses are doing now. Two faces of the same coin.

A simple solution to Tamil problem after winning the war was made a big wound, and now spread to other parts of the body and also to other people too.

Sri Lanka the Paradise lost is Bleeding again.

“A simple solution to Tamil problem after winning the war was made a big wound,”

It is not a Tamil problem, a Sinhala/Buddhist problem imposed on minorities.

          Lasantha,
Why don’t you answer my question? With whom should Sri Lanka reconcile with?
Now, what is this “big wound” you say opened after the war?

            @Eusense

You asked Antony Peter on another article ‘Antany, Please list the rights Sinhalese have in SL, but not the Tamils’

I think the question you raised here also based on the same idea.

Here is my answer to you! It’s very simple!!

            1) I go to a police station and make a complain against a sinhalese even in jaffna police station, I’m 99.9% sure that I wont get justice. But at the sametime, if my complain was against a tamil, then I can be 99.9% sure that I’ll get justice. In other part of the country where more sinhalese live, the chances of getting justice against a sinhala guy is 0%.

            2) They ask me to sing national anthem in sinhala, But still tamil is declared as official language in north and east. You may ask in which country national anthem in two languages like your rapist army leader asked a BBC reporter in an interview. I think that BBC reporter did not do enough ground work to reply that rapist.
(Canada national anthem in English and French version, and South Africa national anthem contains lyrics of 5 languages.)

I think the first example is enough to say my rights in your so-called democratic country which treats tamils as equal.

            Eusense,

I really don’t need to answer your question if you read most of the comments in CT by other readers.

Hope you ware alive during the 30 year LTTE conflict or war and JVP insurrections.

You would have seen how a minor incident flared up to a 30 year war and many times our Economy, Army, social and communal lives were crawling.

You would have seen how we lost 13 Passenger planes in one day at Katunayake.

You would have seen how our whole battalion was rounded up and overran by LTTE at Elephant Pass after keeping them hostage for over a week. We still don’t know the exact number of soldiers that perished.

You would have seen how young school boys and girls as well as elderly people lined up to give blood to our soldiers, where at 53 I was part of it.

The whole Sri Lanka was bleeding then including lives of Presidents, MPs, soldiers and their families and we the citizens.

Yes, we ate Kiribath and lit fire crackers thinking the war was over and we could live happily thereafter……But things changed rapidly thereafter.

It was Pres.Rajapakse who introduced 18thAmmendemt when we were eating Kiribath not knowing what his intentions are. Opposition, Judiciary, Police and media and we the citizens were kept in dark and made us mere Lame ducks.

Soon thereafter Gen.SF was sent to jail on wrongful charges, Impeached CJ S.Bandaranaike using phony PSC, Journalists started to disappear and others ran away to other countries and protests were subdued with bullets.

What Pre.Rajapakse did with 18th Amendment. The most powerful amendment ever in Sri Lanka’s history with one person given the whole country, it’s econmy, it’s budget, it’s judiciary, police and Trade……

What happened to LLRC, 13th Amendment, Tamil and Minority problrms and their rights. What happened to CW forun, UN, UNHRC, EU,SARC, or even relations with India……..

Today our Passport is in the bottom five in the world. Why….

Yes, after five years again GOBI start appearing and more Tamil Terrorists start appear. Who is next.

Even the five UNP MPs who went to Mattala Airport were assulted by Namal Rajapakse’s Thugs.

Yes, anybody could do wonders with Rs. 230,00,000 (Two Hundred Thirty Lakhs Rupees) OF DAILY SALARY FOR A SINGLE DICTATOR MORON.

There should be that reconciliation – with whom – first and foremost within the Majority community are they at peace after the so called victory of the Armed forces?. If they do why are the same armed forces still staying away from their families – They should be in fact united with their families with well paying jobs in their neighborhood. Those young people who were mobilized for a purpose should now after 5 years should be able to return back home and produce something constructive. They are instead confined to their Barracks with paper tigers floated all over to justify their herding away from home and to cover the governments inability to Industrialize the south so that they return back home for well paid jobs. Reconciliation is a must and should be within the Majority community for prosperity . The Tamil community if if left alone will follow suit without exeption

Why cann’t GOSL pass legislation or law to implement previously agreed or promises made to India or UN immediately after May 2009. Also GOSL should look after people who lives in Srilanka, it will satisfy all tamil . Diaspora or LTTE are new entity which are created by GOSL since 1983.Therefore GOSL no need to wait for anything, to pass appropriate amendments in Parliament to resolve and reinstate the affected Srilankan minority groups rights

[Edited out] Peiris is talking nonsense again. At least
Canada has a tool to use against Sri Lanka.

What has Peiris got? Only empty rhetoric, rhetoric
and rhetoric.Like an ass, he brays all the time.

Why can’t Mahinda Rajapaksa change him? Is it because
    the son is giving tuition?

What a shame for G.L.Peiris. Why can’t he take the begging bowl & ask every country. Even Lord Buddha and Emperor Asoka realized the value of Human rights. Why can’t G.L.Peiris advise Mahinda about the Latimer House principles.
