The Sri Lankan ambassador to Israel, Nimal Bandara, arranged a study tour for Sri Lankan journalists to “educate” foreign media, and 16 journalists arrived in Israel on 6 September 2025.
This is an extremely critical juncture, during which the last settler-colonial state of Israel has shown its ugliest face of violence and brutality against the Palestinian people, seemingly determined to exterminate them—a pattern reminiscent of Nazi Germany’s persecution of Jewish people in the last century. A section of progressive Jewish people and also those with Jewish religious faith in Israel and abroad are horrified by the brutality of Zionism and have expressed their solidarity with Palestinians. At this moment, the Sri Lankan state is attempting to appease the Zionist state by allowing Sri Lankan journalists to participate in an “educational” tour of Israel.
Journalists have the right to travel abroad to compile reports and raise public awareness. However, it is deplorable that they went on a guided tour arranged by the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Defence to “study” the situation. Since 7 October 2023, Israel has banned international journalists from independently entering Gaza. Even some pro-Israeli European states have demanded media access to Gaza and condemned Israel for restricting press freedom.
The UN Office of Human Rights recently released a statement condemning targeted attacks on journalists in Gaza. The statement noted that “at least 248 journalists have now been killed in Gaza, more than in any other conflict in modern times.”
The ethics and impartiality of journalists were seriously lacking among those who joined the tour.
Crucially , the Sri Lankan journalists should have declined the invitation to attend the guided press tour organized by the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Defence. Such a refusal would have demonstrated solidarity with the 248 journalists who have been killed in Gaza and with independent reporters who continue to be denied access to the territory.
Historically, the United States introduced “embedded journalism,” particularly during the Gulf War, when ground rules forced journalists to travel and live with American forces. They were not allowed to move independently or use their own vehicles. Former military intelligence analyst Manning highlights the military’s tendency is to select reporters expected to produce favourable coverage. The Israeli settler colonial logic is a continuity and reframing of embedded journalism in such a way by ‘ educating’ them to produce reports in favour of their settler colonial project. In this process, the Sri Lankan journalists who chose to join the ‘guided education tour’ are guilty of bias and have become an integral part of the settler-colonial discourse.
While journalists can be partly blamed, it is the Sri Lankan state’s moral and political responsibility is in the limelight.
The current Sri Lankan government has taken contradictory stances. While the Foreign Minister expressed unwavering support for the Palestinian struggle during a meeting with Palestinian Ambassador Ihab Khalil in June 2025, diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and Israel have simultaneously deepened. As a highlight of this relationship, a controversial “educational” tour for journalists was organized. Media Minister Nalinda Jayatissa, at a press briefing, stated: “The government will not bear any responsibility. Anyone is free to go to Israel; there is no ban on visiting. We cannot obstruct this.”
It is alleged that Vijitha Dissanayake, Director of Sports, and Prasad, Assistant Director of English News—both from Rupavahini , a state controlled media —took part in this trip. Furthermore, reports suggest that staff members from ITN and the state-controlled FM radio also participated in the so-called “educational” visit. According to Section 12 of the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation Act, the Corporation has the authority to dismiss or exercise disciplinary control over its staff. Therefore, the minister’s statement holds no weight in this regard.
During the South African apartheid era, Sri Lanka did not maintain diplomatic relations with South Africa. As an active member of the Non-Aligned Movement, Sri Lanka adhered firmly to its principles against apartheid. The governments of SWRD Bandaranaike and Sirimavo Bandaranaike strongly supported the Palestinian people. In 1971, the United Front alliance closed down the Israeli embassy and established ties with the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO).
It was the United National Party (UNP) government that favoured settler-colonialist Israel, especially under JR Jayewardene, who established strong links with Israel, purchasing weapons and fighter planes. Under Mahavali project, Mossad advised the settlement of Sinhalese in Tamil villages, and the Israeli government trained Sri Lankan armed forces. The late President R Premadasa was an exception within the UNP tradition, suspending diplomatic ties with Israel in 1992. Later, in 2020, the Gotabaya Rajapaksa government encouraged Israeli assistance in technology and agriculture, continuing the UNP legacy of giving Israel diplomatic status in Sri Lanka.
After Ranil Wickremesinghe became President in July 2022 without peoples mandate, he deepened relations further. In October 2023, just a month after Israel began bombing and killing civilians in Gaza, he signed an agreement to send 10,000 Sri Lankan farm workers to Israel. Around the same time, Israel banned 20,000 Palestinian workers from entering its territory, and the Sri Lankan government shamelessly provided a replacement workforce. Later, another 20,000 Sri Lankan workers were sent to Israel.
The present NPP government appears to be following the UNP’s path by strengthening ties with Israel at a critical moment, when hundreds of thousands of people around the world are demonstrating against Israel’s genocidal war against the Palestinian people. Several countries have severed economic or diplomatic ties with Israel, while human rights organizations and the UN have condemned its apartheid system and ethnic cleansing policies. Although most Western countries continue to support Israel militarily, they issued a joint statement in July 2025 calling on Israel to end the war and opposing any territorial or demographic changes in the occupied Palestinian territories. By contrast, many Asian, Latin American, and African countries have strongly opposed Israel’s actions, with several cutting ties. India, however, under its right-wing Hindutva government, has chosen to deepen bilateral defense cooperation with Israel “from a long-term perspective.” Meanwhile, the right wing, Trump administration in the United States continues to provide Israel with unconditional support.
The Palestinian struggle is not just the struggle of the Palestinian people, but a struggle against settler colonialism and imperialism. It is clear how a constellation of imperialist forces supports Israel, whereas progressive and democratic forces stand with the Palestinians.
It is worth recalling that during the apartheid era in South Africa, when Bandula Warnapura chose to tour South Africa with a rebel cricket team in 1982–83, those cricketers were banned from representing Sri Lanka. The state was proactive in banning cricketers to show solidarity with the anti-apartheid struggle. However, instead of discouraging or banning journalists from attending the guided tour, the NPP government provided state support, which is alarming.
Today, the Sri Lankan government is once again failing to take a principled position against settler colonialism and imperialism. It suffers from double vision—expressing support for the Palestinian struggle while simultaneously strengthening ties with a settler-colonial state. Following the UNP’s path of entertaining settler colonialism is an anathema to inclusive politics and democracy . Progressive forces within the NPP must resist such duplicity. Likewise, democratic and progressive movements in Sri Lanka should continue to pressure the government to sever or at least minimize diplomatic relations with Israel- the last bastion of settler colonialism .

Sri Lanka is soon going to incur the wrath of the Islamic nations if they don’t pull back with this. We have too many of our workers there bringing in billions of $$$.

Watched the Fareed Zachariah discussion last weekend. While the West and Israel has been totally illegal, discriminatory and xenophobic towards the Palestinian people since 1948, it is impossible to go now go back to historical pre-1948. The discussion panel said that if Israel drops its arms today, there will be no Israel, and if Palestinians drop their arms today, there will be no Palestine. For the sake of integrity in this present times, it is best for Hamas to be dismantled as they are uncompromising and only want their lands back pre-1948 (rightfully of course, but it is too late). The only way Israel can go about it is to therefore remove Hamas by destroying Gaza city where most of them are in.

Israel always said that expansionism upon expansionism was the only way to protect themselves. Yet they allowed further immigration of millions of mostly European Jews to occupy Palestinian lands. Their protectionism was a bluff with zero respect and acknowledgement of the suffering Palestinians as fellow humans….they destroyed their lives and livelihoods and then called the Palestinians who were made to live in horrific conditions, inhuman beasts.
–
The only thing that Trump should do now is to halt all future immigration and make a pact with Hamas (or if Hamas won’t compromise, another Palestinian authority), giving them the multi-billions to build up Gaza exclusively for the Palestinians, with programs for an interactive approach between the two states eventually merging them within the century. That is the only creative approach that is available, and one that will be far cheaper and moral for US and the world.

Unfortunately Trump has other plans and a ceasefire or any deal with Hamas is not in the best interests of the genocidal state nor himself. The plan from the start is to slaughter as much of the helpless Palestinians, bomb their city into rubble, deliberately starve them, cut off their water, food and medicine, bomb all hospitals, UN shelters and even mosques and churches where people take shelter, and take over the blood soaked land still filled with thousands of bodies under the rubble.

Netanyahu, calling Trump ‘Israel’s best friend ever,’ said the U.S. president ‘spoke to me several times about beachfront properties. He mentioned a place a bit south of here – in Gaza.’ The reported plan envisions a U.S.-led Gaza trusteeship for at least a decade with ‘voluntary relocation’ of Palestinians”….. Haaretz
America, the UK, and the EU are complicit in this genocide by funding and arming the war criminals. The Arab world keeps pretending they are unaware their people are being slaughtered.
Sri Lankan journalists run to get propaganda that would favor war criminals.

Even the late Charlie Kirk finally saw the truth and condemned Israel’s atrocities (may he rest in peace in the arms of Jesus 🙏🏻🎉✝). He was a good man with a good heart, but was woefully misinformed and rather unqualified. Although he started out supporting them and his organization was sponsored by them, God gave him the strength and wisdom to speak out against this rogue state. He would have eventually changed his stance on so many other issues also if he was given the chance the live further.

The topic of the article is the role of Sri Lanka’s government in co-operating with the apartheid genocidal regime in making no restrictions to probably Evangelical Christian Zionists (posing as bona-fide journalists) who form a significant section of the community that justifies the genocide, based on biblical prophesies and statements in the bible that whoever curses Israel will be cursed by God etc. Most of the world now not only curses the state of Israel but would like to see the European settler colony dismantled and indigenous Palestinians given equal rights as the migrant Europeans claiming a divine right to take all the land from the Jordan river to the Mediterranean sea have no special status. Sri Lanka must stand up for universal justice.

Excellent points in the article. Why is Bandara acting like he is oblivious to the fact that there is a UN declared GENOCIDE being committed, and why is he doing the war criminals this favor? He should be insisting these journalists go into GAZA where ALL journalists have been banned from going in, and where over 270 journalists have been targeted and brutally killed, some with their families. Don’t we have any shame enabling these war criminals to spread their lies which are almost immediately disproved by human rights organizations?
As for these anti Muslim hand picked members of the media, who have been discredited many times, they are only proving to the country that they have no integrity or credibility, as they eagerly accept this junket trip to help a condemned nation, one with the most UN resolutions against it, spread their lies and justifications, even as their corrupt leader breaks ground on blood soaked land, to built the beach resort that Trump, Kushner, and Bibi wants, and what they are killing for.
We have biased journalists who will put aside their humanity and ignore the ICC, ICJ, and the UN, just to get a free trip to a nation dropping 2000 pound bombs on children. Shame on them.

One should define “genocide” clearly. Despite what social media claims, large numbers of people dying in a short span of time does not necessarily constitute “genocide.” If that were the case, then a tsunami and earthquake could also be classified as “genocide.”

That’s exactly the logic you’re utilizing. Whenever a large group of people die quickly under some extreme circumstances, you call it a “genocide”, based on personal bias. You did that with Syria (Assad), Sri Lanka, and now Gaza. The logic is stupid, but your type is incapable of logical reasoning.

Now we proof that AI is smarter than Scott. Of course the argument is mine, but explaining the logic to poices of hist can be tiresome.
The conclusion is correct because it highlights a common misconception: that mass death alone equals genocide. The key point is that genocide has a specific legal and social definition, which is not merely “a lot of people dying.”
According to the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (1948), genocide involves intentional acts committed with the aim of destroying, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group. The emphasis is on intent to target a specific group, not just the scale of deaths.
So, the reasoning goes like this:
Many people can die from natural disasters or wars without any targeted intent toward a particular group.
Genocide specifically requires deliberate intent to destroy a protected group.
Therefore, simply pointing to large-scale death (e.g., from a tsunami or earthquake) does not meet the criteria for genocide.
This is why the author’s comparison to natural disasters is apt—it clarifies that scale alone is insufficient; intent matters.

Hello Lester,
The Confused. When Have I ever claimed that Syria or Sri Lanka were a Genocide. “The Commission finds that Israel is responsible for the commission of genocide in Gaza,” said Pillay, the commission chair. “It is clear that there is an intent to destroy the Palestinians in Gaza through acts that meet the criteria set forth in the Genocide Convention.”

Lester,
Yes, it is genocide when Israel takes in over 50,000 immigrants annually who consider themselves Jews (this is in addition to the 5-million who initially came in by force), and then displaces the Palestinian people, who of course will retaliate because they are living in inhuman conditions, and then drop bombs on these poor displaced people saying they attacked us first…..the ratio being 30 Palestinians killed for 1 Israeli killed. Double that to 60:1 with the horror of displacement in place and the inhumane conditions these Palestinians have been living in since 1948. Deliberate intent by the Israelis over non-deliberate intent by tsunamis and earthquakes (unless someone deliberately did geo-engineering or deleberate nuclear blasts under the ocean to create them).

Lester / September 19, 2025
What is unusual about Gaza is the cynical and criminal way Hamas has chosen to wage war. In Ukraine, when Russia attacks with missiles, drones or artillery, civilians go underground while the Ukrainian military stays aboveground to fight. In Gaza, it’s the reverse: Hamas hides and feeds and preserves itself in its vast warren of tunnels rather than open them to civilians for protection.
https://www.almendron.com/tribuna/no-israel-is-not-committing-genocide-in-gaza/
Looking at what Navi Pillay said: “It is clear that there is an intent to destroy the Palestinians in Gaza.”
Then the countries that refuse to take in Palestinians as refugees ( including the ones that took in millions of blue-eyed blonde-haired Ukrainians) are accomplices to genocide. Starting with Egypt , which has sealed its Rafah border crossing with Gaza. So now, Saudi Head Chopper, Keir Starmer, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, etc. should stand in the docket next to Netanyahu.
The reality is, the UN is unable to stop Hamas. If Hamas gave up its weapons and surrendered and Israel continued with its siege of Gaza, then it is genocide. Hamas is guilty of genocide. According to the Hamas, the intention is to destroy Israel completely.
/
Lester / September 19, 2025
Ramona,
Keeping in mind, Israel was attacked first. It is only going after Palestinian Hamas in Gaza. There are Palestinians living freely in the West Bank, Jerusalem, etc. Israel has no choice, except to eradicate Hamas. Remember after 911, the US invaded two entire countries. Millions of people died. That is the correct way to defend yourself.
In fact, there is an attempted genocide of Druze and Christians in Syria right now by the Sunnis: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zm3CfIXkpDA. Only Israel is trying to help these people. This is real genocide, since many unarmed Druze and Christians are being attacked only because of their identity.

Lester,
–
The fundamental question is why Israel, even in this decade, keeps taking in over 50,000 immigrants on a yearly basis, of those who call themselves Jews. It has been a slow displacement and genocide of the Palestinian people (of the ancient blood of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, now turned Muslim), since 1948. Actually, it was a fast displacement and genocide when 5-million Europeans who claimed Jewish origins, entered the place after WW2. Where else are the Palestinians to go? Countries around the region have already taken millions of them in. Some of them went to Europe as refugees (Europe holocaustic their Jews and has now replaced them with Palestinian Muslims, and Europeans are how howling in anti-immigration protests).
–
The question again is: If Israel does indeed want to eradicate Hamas, what guarantee do we have that they will give the Palestinian people back their lands when they have a huge immigration program for those who call themselves Jews, or who are associated with the so-called Jews, to enter Israel so freely. That is the reason why Hamas attacked them again in Oct, 2023, as they were covertly encroaching onto the little lands the Palestinians have left to them.
/
ramona therese fernando / September 20, 2025

Having said that, the only way create peace in the region is for Israel and US and any other country supporting Israel to give billions-trillions of dollars to the Palestinian people, upgrade their lifestyles, and broker peace and interactivity between the two states. It will be cheaper and more profitable that way. But what you see is Israel taking their chance to even take over the little lands the Palestinian people have, from Gaza, to the West Bank, to the Golan Heights.
/
Lester / September 20, 2025
Ramona,
Good points, but Western-democracy will not work in a Sunni Islamic nation (although Turkey is certainly progressive compared to its Sunni neighbors & Turks are well-educated). It may work in a Shia Islamic nation such as Iran, where the younger generation has a strong apathy towards the religious autocrats. There is no WWII equivalence, whereby Germany and Japan were successfully rebuilt with Western capital. The US/NATO completely failed in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The ideal solution for the Palestinians is to sell their land and property to the Israeli government, and then relocate elsewhere in the Middle East or Europe. Each adult Palestinian should receive a minimum of $30K USD. The total cost would be $30-$60B USD. Keeping in mind, Israel is spending as much as $200M–$300M/day to fight the war, set up food banks, etc. The Arab countries, especially Qatar (which sponsored Hamas), should each contribute $2B to this fund. There are 2M Palestinians in Gaza, distributing them to 6 different countries (~333K per country) is not difficult. An ideal location would Ukraine , where the population has sunk dramatically. Ukraine could easily take in 800K Palestinians.

It would be to the benefit of Western countries to work with the rich Arab countries like Saudi Arabia and build up the Palestinian state starting in Gaza. It will be far more productive than relocating the Palestinians to other places. Palestinians themselves will not move away and would prefer to fight to death than be sent away from their ancient ancestral homelands thst they love and is ingrained in their dna. If they are forced away, the Muslim world will lose face, and from the other places they reside in, Palestinians will have plenty of support to keep attacking Israel even more ferociously for many generations to come. Israel will be at constant odds with their neighboring countries
and a pariah throughout the globe because nobody likes a rogue state in this day and age. Nothing much would chang for them since their centuries of persecution in Europe.
/
ramona therese fernando / September 20, 2025
US/Nato could not work well with Iraq because they and the countries surrounding them like Iran and Kuwait were constantly fighting each other because of Western run oil interests. Afghanistan had been a basket case for a long time after the Soviets destroyed it. Anyway, Palestinians are not of the Taliban type like the Afghans. They are of a more modern Islamic kind. Fighting old fashioned wars amongst neighboring countries of same or similar heritage and religion is vastly different from a people being humiliated and exterminated at every turn by a foreign occupying force. Building them up will create a boom for US, Israel, and the whole world.
/
Lester / September 20, 2025
Ramona,
“Palestinians themselves will not move away and would prefer to fight to death than be sent away from their ancient ancestral homelands thst they love and is ingrained in their dna.”
It’s an interesting point. They are certainly attached to their homeland. On the other hand, there many Diaspora’s today. Look at the Chinese, for example. There are millions of Chinese who have grown up in foreign lands, while retaining their culture. They have no intention of permanently residing in China (though the option is open to them). Gaza is similar. With the $30K USD I mentioned, the Palestinians can find opportunities in 3rd countries. They can visit Gaza occasionally as tourists. Instead of bombs and bullets, with the Palestinians gone, Israel can turn Gaza into a first-world entity.
Even if Israel leaves now, Gaza is uninhabitable. It can be rebuilt, but then there will be another “intifada”, and Israel will wreck the place again. So this ends in a few ways: Hamas willfully surrenders (won’t happen) or all the Palestinians are evacuated for good or Hamas is defeated and Israel turns Gaza into a heavily fortified military encampment. The best option for Palestinians is to migrate.

Those Chinese left China out of their own volition to a better place. Palestinians will be forced out to war torn places like as you say, Ukraine, and also South Sudan……..if they are to be given so much money, wonder why you do not mention Sri Lanka. No, they won’t be given any money at all but be forcibly removed to some other war torn place to be killed. If they had only been given that amount of money a long time ago, they would have been far happier with what was left to them of their natural homes and considered working with Israel.
/

Ramona,
“No, they won’t be given any money at all…”
Have you not wondered why 2 million people are living in a war zone? It is unprecedented in human history. There is a reason 7 million Ukranians have left that country, even though many regions of Ukraine, such as Kiev, are much safer than Gaza.
The fake news media does not mention the population density of Gaza, 5,967/km^2. If you want to visualize this, take the entire London (which has a similar density but 4x the area) and shrink it to a single borough. Between September 1940 and May 1941, when the Germans bombed London indiscriminately, around 30K civilians died and another 50K were wounded. Again, this is with 4x the area of Gaza, over a 9 month period. So far, about 65K civilians have died in Gaza (according to the Gaza Ministry of Health), over a 2 year or so period. From this argument, we can conclude Israel is not attacking Gaza indiscriminately. If it was, the death toll should be much higher than 65K, just from the bombing alone. Obviously Israel has much better planes than the Luftwaffe and Gaza has no radar.

Yes, Gaza is indeed a war zone created by the Israelis. They would bomb the whole place in a jiff if the whole world was not watching. But they have always genocide slowly, and then pulled back citing holocaust stories and pretending that they are the victims.
–
When 5-million of them invaded after WW2, bad as it was for the Palestinians, the world felt sorry for them and tried to resettle them amongst the Palestinians, even if the Palestinians were driven and killed off their lands. But decades after that they are still taking in over 50,000 immigrants who call themselves Jews each year, and are now encroaching onto even Gaza. That right-winged government of Netanyahu is inhumane.

“7.5 million Palestinians have already left the Palestine!”
Yes, I think they call that the “Nakba” or “Catastrophe.” Keeping in mind, the displacement of Palestinians from their homes in 1947-48 was the direct result of them losing a war . Had the Arabs won, they would have kicked all of the Jews out of Israel/Palestine, permanently. They cannot accept the existence of Israel. Not because they “hate” Jews, but because of their holy book, the Quran. Jerusalem is one of the three holy cities, therefore it is an obligation for Muslims to control that city, in its entirety. You see, Gaza is just the beginning. Not just the Palestinians, but no Arab nation will accept the existence of Israel.

If you recall, Germany occupied parts of Poland and Czech Republic (Sudetenland) during WWII. After WWII, Germany lost all its territory in the Sudetenland. Millions of Germans were displaced and returned to Germany proper. The Palestinians are in a similar position. They have been waging a guerilla war against Israel since around 1948. It is inevitable that the Palestinians lose some, if not all, of their land. The historical precedent is there.

They “lost the war” to entirely foreign forces. You mean you still believe in colonization in this day and age? Colonization was at a time when people did not know better and the colonizers lived in pre-modern and uncivilized times. Jews fleeing holocaust and displacing Palestinians in 1948 and a bit after can be tolerated globally. But it didn’t stop there, did it? Over 50,000 Jewish immigrants/year to an already suffering land cannot sit with the modern day humane rationale, especially when there is very little discrimination towards them in Europe now…..even Zelensky is a Jew. These Israelis shockingly have no conscience and respect towards other races and the horrific human suffering and incremental genocide they inflict on other races.

Huge difference between Germans being chased away from Poland and Czech republic as they were neighbouring, adjacent countries the Germans just walked across into, and masses of Jewish immigrants coming from 1,000’s of miles away with very little blood connection to the land.

My point is that if you lose a war, you lose land. How much land you lose is up to the winner. The Palestinians and other Arabs have been waging war on Israel for a long time. If Israel does not do anything, there will be no more Israel. Syria is a very good example. Syria (under Assad) fought against Sunni aggression from multiple countries. Eventually Assad was deposed and the government of Syria is now under the control of jihadis.
You cannot assess this situation from the point of view of innocent unarmed Palestinians fighting evil Israel. Hamas is a well-funded terrorist group that has carried out suicide attacks . The charter of Hamas says it is a duty of Muslims to get rid of Israel.

Scott,
According to the Tamil Diaspora, Navi Pillay is a liar. She claimed that there is no genocide in Sri Lanka: “Well nobody used that word (genocide) to me; not in authorities or civil society.” /
“At least two respectable civil society members who met Navi Pillay have told her in clear terms that what had taken place was genocide and what is taking place after the war in 2009 is structural genocide committed on the nation of Eezham Tamils, TamilNet learns this week from first hand sources in the island.”
https://www.tamilnet.com/art.html?artid=36711&catid=13
Do you agree with Navi Pillay that there was no genocide in Sri Lanka?
Gaza looks like a “genocide.” In reality, most casualties are a result of the high population density and Hamas waging guerilla warfare . Ask Navi Pillay why Hamas hides openly among civilians.

Hello Lester,
The Futile. Your divide and conquer attempts are futile. You missed the next part of her 2013 Interview “However it’s not for me to judge. It’s only after proper investigations the judges can conclude weather (sic) and what crimes were committed”
Remember the UN commissioned an “Independent International Commission of Inquiry” Report on Gaza. Below is the Conclusion
“The Commission concludes on reasonable grounds that the Israeli authorities and Israeli security forces have committed and are continuing to commit the following actus reus of genocide against the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, namely (i) killing members of the group; (ii) causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; (iii) deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part; and (iv) imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group”.
“On incitement to genocide, the Commission concludes that Israeli President Isaac Herzog, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and then Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, have incited the commission of genocide and that Israeli authorities have failed to take action against them to punish this incitement”.
You cannot get any clearer than this.
Best regards
/
Lester / September 20, 2025
Scott,
It is very likely Israel committed some war crimes in Gaza. As did the Sri Lankan Army. As did the US & NATO in Iraq and Afghanistan. As does every army in every war. Even your hero Wallace, who led a brigade of kilted hoodlums, committed the equivalent of war crimes (though he was tried for treason).
The bar is higher for genocide . The UN has to prove Israel was not merely acting in self-defense, which they have not done. In the context of genocide, there has to be a substantial evidence that goes beyond war crimes.
/
Lester / September 20, 2025
Scott,
You also avoided a direct answer to the question of whether Sri Lanka committed genocide during the 30-year civil war. You are hiding behind ambiguity as usual. The UN never claimed genocide was committed in Sri Lanka. Not even the Darusman Report.
/
LankaScot / September 20, 2025
Hello Lester,
I know that you and honesty are not close partners. Have you ever heard the honest answer “I don’t know”. As Navi Pillay suggested – It is not up to us to decide legally as to whether Genocide has been committed until thorough, independent Investigations have been conducted and the Evidence weighed by the Judges. They will make the Determination, as they have on the Israeli Genocide. I would be fairly sure, going by the Genocide Convention and International Human Rights Laws that Sri Lanka would be found guilty of War Crimes if not Genocide.
As for the Darusman Report it was handicapped by this – “The Panel’s Mandate however does not extend to fact-finding or investigation”.
Best regards

Scott,
The master of contradiction.
I don’t know
I would be fairly sure, going by the Genocide Convention and International Human Rights Laws that Sri Lanka would be found guilty of War Crimes if not Genocide.
So “you don’t know”, but you are “fairly sure.”
Binary = exactly one answer. . If the exam question has “a” or “b” as an answer, “c” is not an answer.
There was no genocide in Sri Lanka. If there was a genocide, then it should have completed by now, given the war ended in 2009. Or maybe the genocide is “cyclical” and depends on the mood of the NGO’s.

There was no genocide in Sri Lanka in 2009. Many Tamils were killed in the North, but this was not because Sinhalese wanted to displace Tamils off their lands. This was because Sinhalese wanted to stop the terroristic war in 2009.
–
Having said that, yes, there was some genocide in the Sinhalese areas in the 80’s and before, in places like Colombo when the Tamils were chased out of their homes, many killed, and their businesses were burnt down. Sinhalese have atoned for those times by welcoming the Tamils back now, and forming associations and friendships with them. Sinhalese should also be able to likewise live in the North and East. This is how the Israelis and Palestinians should interact.
–
Don’t let the Chabad house people influence you by comparing our countries. Sinhalese are not encouraging millions of people who themselves Sinhalese to their shores and chasing the Tamils away because they need the space, as what Israelis are doing to the Palestinians.
/

Correction : Sinhalese are not encouraging millions of *foreign people who identify* themselves as Sinhalese to their shores and chasing the Tamils away because they need the space, as what Israelis are doing to the Palestinians.

Be careful of Chabad house people working on any Sinhalese-Muslim animosities to shore up support for Israel. Muslims have lived in Sri Lanka for millennia, and have contributed greatly tom the country.

“Sinhalese are not encouraging millions of people who themselves Sinhalese to their shores and chasing the Tamils away because they need the space”
True, but historically, there were Tamil invasions to the island.
https://www.worldhistorymaps.info/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/map-1000ad-2048×1203.jpg
In 1000 AD, Cholas had a very large army and strong navy under Rajaraja Chola I. Even 1200 years before that, there was Eelara. Had he not been defeated by Dutugamunu, “Sri Lanka” would not exist today. That is the way history goes –> the winner takes all. Israel has to defeat Hamas to send a strong message to the Arab world, otherwise the Arabs will try to overwhelm it. Qatar is the first one to crack. Hamas cannot hide there.
Trump will do his best to make peace and forge economic alliances between the Arabs and Israel, the only obstacle right now is Gaza/Hamas.

Tamil invasion was a 1,000 years ago. All countries had such invasions in those ancient times. In recent times, many Tamils were brought down from Tamil Nadu as workers. Most were sent back. Now both races are almost blended and Sri Lanka’s policy is to keep it that way. Both races have been living side by side for melleinia and even worship each other’s gods. We fight from time to time, but we patch up and make up. Israel on the other hand consists of mostly Europeans with less than 25% Jewish blood who left 2,000 years ago. Tamils who left during the terroristic war however, will never return 2,000 years later because unlike the Jews, they have no constraints about blending in with the populations they reside in.
2,000 years from now, there will only be DNA readings showing that they have some single-digit percentage of Tamil in them.
/
ramona therese fernando / September 20, 2025
Lester,

Anyway, it is the Sinhalese who can identify as the Palestinians, and the Tamil diaspora 2,000 years from now (with less than 10% Tamil DNA), who will identify as the Jews.

War “crime” = wiping out most of the surrendering top LTTE leadership. An excellent tactical move on the part of the SLA. They had 30 years to surrender. Do you want to give them another 25? India came with 100K soldiers to create a federal state, you know the result. Terrorists are not normal people, therefore eradicating them in any way possible is 100% justifiable. Non-terrorists should stay out of the way.

“Yes that’s a War Crime, but they also wiped out many thousand Civilians.”
The LTTE was hiding among civilians, firing mortars and rockets. Schools and hospitals were also used. The LTTE would fire, then run away quickly, with the sole intention of army retaliation causing civilian casualties . Similar to what Hamas is doing in Gaza.
The analogy is medicine. To remove cancer cells, some healthy cells will also be removed. In the ideal scenario, the patient can still recover.

In my opinion, Sri Lanka should send mercenaries to fight in Gaza. Around 20K or so at the beginning. This would provide an opportunity to train with the world’s most sophisticated weapons. They would also be paid (foreign remittances), though that matters less. 400 Indians have joined: https://www.tehrantimes.com/news/494562/Are-Indians-fighting-in-Gaza. Who cares, that was the mistake of CBK and her stupid Uncle. That’s why MR was selected to finish the mission. Do you not know that in 1987, when JR was about to crush the LTTE, the Hindians intervened with Paripu Drop and other nonsense? Even the Wiki mentions it:
“At the start of the second phase, Sri Lankan listening posts intercepted LTTE communications urgently requesting their cadres in Tamil Nadu to request help to save them from complete destruction from the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. On pressure from the state government of Tamil Nadu, the Indian government demanded the cessation of the offensive, claiming it would end the suffering of the civilian population.”
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vadamarachchi_Operation
Gotha and Fonseka were part of this operation.
JR was a very smart man. VP knew this and waited for Premadasa before calling India’s bluff. Then VP won the lottery with CBK.
/
Lester / September 21, 2025
VP knew the capabilities of Gotha and Fonseka. That’s why he tried to take out Fonseka (2006) and Gotha (starting 2006, there were other attempts as well). In 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2009, VP tried to assassinate Mahinda. VP should be given credit. Unlike dead brain cell human rights champions, VP understood these 3 would go after him with everything under the sun. That is exactly what happened, down to the final axe blow. He would have realized well before 2009, the war was lost. That is when he started the Olympic Marathon with a 300K civilian shield to create a “humanitarian crisis”, the aim being a ceasefire. VP was ultimately captured and executed. Surely your elders are dancing and singing around the fire about VP’s “Nanthikadal Moment?”

Nice try. You are a cheerleader for the LTTE, but that is besides the point. JR was ready to militarily defeat the LTTE, the only obstacle was India. No one cares if you believe Wiki or not, it’s confirmed by other sources such as Narayan Swamy. While hiding in India, VP was gradually building up the military capabilities of the LTTE. Beginning with weapons smuggled from Lebanon/Syria. Then India and Premadasa also gave weapons. VP waited for Premadasa before taking on India, militarily.

Definition
Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide
Article II
In the present Convention, genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such:
Killing members of the group;
Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;
Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part;
Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;
Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.

Native,
I know you didn’t go far in school, but I am not holding that against you, as you admitted in the other thread that your logical faculties are on par with a teenager. Now, look at the metric you suggested:
In the present Convention, genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethical, racial or religious group…
If this were the true, how does the UN account for the 2M Palestinians living outside of Gaza, in the West Bank and Israel proper? If Israel wanted to commit genocide, it would start with these people. Last time I checked, there were no Jewish judges or civil service members or engineers in the Third Reich after the Nazis came to power in 1933.
Any rational observer can see, the only issue Israel has with the Palestinians is Hamas . Remember, your relative Idi Amin kicked all the Indians out of Uganda. The LTTE expelled all the Sinhalese and Muslims from areas under their control. This is called “ethnic cleansing.” 20% of the population of Israel is Palestinians.

Have you listened to the sanctioned Israeli Ministers Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich for “repeated incitements of violence against Palestinian communities” in the occupied West Bank. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c8xgk1ek19lo
Nothing about Hamas in their language. They want (along with Netanyahu) a Greater Israel and the destruction/expulsion of all the Palestinians from Gaza. From the River to the Sea is an Israeli tenet. “As the Likud Party’s original platform stated in 1977, “Judea and Samaria”—also known as the West Bank—”will not be handed to any foreign administration; between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River there will only be Israeli sovereignty.”
https://dawnmena.org/israels-vision-of-no-palestinians-from-the-river-to-the-sea/

It goes without saying that Sri Lankans, whether they be Tamil, Sinhala, or other minorities, are racially diverse. Since it runs in their family, I was also astounded by how some of the batch mates at Peradeniya treated their fellow mates.
By the way, I met some Tamil Sri Lankans in Europe who, despite their constant criticism of Sinhalayas, do not even want to interact with their communities.
Since I was a student, I have helped a lot of Sri Lankans, regardless of their race. However, I am not going after anyone today because I am aware that Sri Lankans continue to struggle with their issues and show no signs of getting better. Even though some idiots call themselves “intellectuals” but act like “lady boys” in Wilpattu, those guys from Unawatuna are further examples.

“What Race riots in the UK? There have been demonstrations, but I don’t know of any “Riots” this year.”
–
LS, you are absolutely correct; based on his ludicracies posted on this forum, he is a confabulator.
Some idiots interpret things they don’t really understand in this way. Until new divisions are formed, trolls like these can only harm us and others. This man is a complete moron who doesn’t seem to understand what a “riot” is, but because he is close to the Rajapakshes, he is attempting to further defend them. I’m hoping that this will be resolved in the next few days.

Scott,
The generous welfare system in the UK, as well as France and Germany, is beginning to crack. The welfare system was not designed for non-working migrants to occupy hotels or council houses indefinitely, at the expense of taxpayers. The welfare system is only sustainable through high taxes. Already in France, the government is playing to raise the retirement age and cut back the number of holidays. If the current governments cannot figure out migration, the populace may opt for nationalist parties (look at Hungary), and then the solution becomes clear.

Hello Lester,
The Welfare System in the UK (I can’t speak for France) was fought for by the Working Class over Generations. It is not generous. Do not just slavishly repeat the language of Tony Robinson’s Supporters. My Generation the “Baby Boomers” were a result of the increased birthrate after the end of WW2. Due to the Demographic Changes in the Population the current Tax Revenues are insufficient to pay for our Pensions and all the other Outgoings that Taxation pays for.
That was one of the reasons to encourage migration from the Caribbean and the Indian Subcontinent. Many skilled people left the UK in the 40s, 50s and 60s to Canada, Australia and New Zealand etc. including quite a few of my relations. The Governments of the time complained bitterly about the “Brain Drain”, but they were given the middle finger. Unlike Sri Lanka they couldn’t stop us leaving legally.
You said “and then the solution becomes clear”. Can you explain the Solution?
Best regards

It’s easy to cheat the system, Scott. Migrants are eligible for Universal Credit: https://www.gov.uk/universal-credit/what-youll-get. The standard allowance for a married couple is £628.10 (for you both). On top of this, you can collect £292.81 – £339 per child. If you have a disability, you can claim another £423.27. If you’re a migrant, you also get access to low-cost housing. For someone from Africa, who was living off £10/month, this is quite an upgrade.
The solution is to deport the low-skilled African/Middle Eastern migrants and bring in high-skilled migrants from places like China and Taiwan.

“Race riots are still happening in UK and France.”
They are not riots. They are associated with the state not by one government but by both governments and involve Sinhala government and armed forces.

Really!
What are they then?
Can you kindly translate your ‘explanation’ (!)?

“The present NPP government appears to be following the UNP’s path by strengthening ties with Israel”
We need to understand the NPP government’s position especially because of our perilous ECONOMIC condition. If they DON’T protect SL economy, GoSL will FALL because of huge hardship to the citizens, resulting in widespread unrest. Our tiny country can not talk about who is doing the right things or wrong ones in this world.
“Setller Colonisation” is nothing new in Sri Lanka. Since the Independence, all SL governments were actively promoting it in N&E of SL.
In USA imperialist [Republicans + white Supremacists] vs progressive forces are opposing each other.
Did not the Majority races and the religious leaders keep QUIET during the massacre of Tamils in SL?
Any explanations?

Look at the Demographics of Sri Lanka. We have about 72 Sinhalese, 12% Tamils, 9% Muslims, Estate Tamils, and others. Of the 12% Tamils, a little over half live in the South, amonng the Sinhalese. So, when the Tamils went to war against the state, with the anti-Sri campaigns of the 1950s, to the Vaddukkodai of the 1970s, to actual war by
1980s, we, a mere 6%, were taking on a majority of 70% Sinhalese + Muslims who were antagonized by ejecting, ethnic cleansing of them from the North (1990). So, the 6% took on 80% of the people of the country, using money sent to by a deluded diaspora. Of course, state terror helped Tamils to close their eyes and support this 6% versus 80% loosing battle orchestrated by a legende-like but totally ruthless leader who rejected any compromise. In the end, if the Tamils got massacred, is that surprising?

“In USA imperialist [Republicans + white Supremacists] vs progressive forces are opposing each other.”
Is the claim that the Democrats are anti-imperialist or devoid of racism?
Southern Democrats can be bitterly more racist than Northern Republicans.

USA just vetoed the Resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza, Release of Hostages , and letting humanitarian aid in to Gaza. it failed by 14 to 1. The 1 is the US veto. Sorry , I mean Israel Vetoed as Israel now control USA.

I hear that Jaffna Monitor is now controlled by Zionist. One of their journalist Mahalingam was on the Israel guided education tour and on his return he joined with the fake/bogus Rohan Gunaratna and wrote an article about Radicalisation of Sri Lankan Muslims.
Israel Education tour is already paying for the Zionist ambitions.

Is one journalist’s trip to Israel adequate information to call it Zionist controlled?
Monitor the Monitor more closely before drawing conclusions.
Remember, however, that Tamil nationalists have had a soft corner for Israel for a long time.

“Remember, however, that Tamil nationalists have had a soft corner for Israel for a long time.”
What about 95% of Sinhala nationalists who had strong corner for Israel and those who are behind the Sinhala nationalist play double game with racism and buddhist terrorism for almost 77 years.

Rajash, SJ, JM, LS, OC, Chiv, et al.,
Does anyone know the identity of the editor-in-chief of Jaffna Monitor writing under the pseudonym ‘Kaniyan Pungundrar’ ?
I had suspected someone like Elijah Hoole, but JM seemed to deny that any of the Hooles was involved.
By the way, until this past week, Senator Bernie Sanders was hesitant to call what Israel is doing in Gaza a genocide. This was understandable as Sanders is Jewish; though his father migrated to the US from Poland, the rest of his father’s family fell victim to the Holocaust.
But even for the surviving Jewish families, what Netanyahu is doing in Gaza is now undeniable as a genocide, and Sanders has now become the first US senator to call it as such. If some idiotic Sri Lankans, because of their religious or racist zealotry, want to deny this, they should be called out for what they are.

Agnos,
If some idiotic Sri Lankans don’t call out Israel for what it is, a settler colony on other people’s land, at least they must object when it happens in their own country. It seems that Israeli settlers are fencing off beaches on the East coast:

Happily, the Hooles are not all made in the same mould.
You will find it hard to establish the editor’s identity unless perhaps you go for litigation.
