Sri Lanka’s Muslim Coronavirus Victims Deserve Honorable Religious Funeral

By Latheef Farook

Latheef Farook

While Sri Lankan government remains adamant on cremating bodies of Muslim coronavirus victims, despite an earlier decision to allow burials, doctors worldwide have come out with scientific facts to prove that burials, now taking place in more than 180 countries worldwide, do not cause any harm to anyone.

Burial for Muslim corona virus dead victims, according to World Health Organization guidelines and local funeral laws, was agreed all over the world

In a 16 minute video Dr Feroze M Mubarak, COVID-19 Practice Strategy Lead, Clinical Director, SAS North & Central London on scientific facts-Cremation of Covid 19 infected bodies, has explained clearly why in the case of Muslims, Christians and Jews burial should be permitted.

However here in Sri Lanka the government, contravening its own previous guidelines, remains adamant on cremating bodies of Muslim corona victims. Third Muslim corona victim from Kalutara who died on Wednesday 8 April 2020   was cremated in complete secrecy though Muslims view it as desecration of the deceased.

This was not reported in the mainstream local media known for its hostility towards Muslims. Instead ,perhaps to justify the cremation, a section of the media published a fake news saying that the Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates has cremated Muslim corona virus dead.

This misleading report was categorically rejected by the UAE Embassy in Colombo.

There were also increasing reports from Human Rights Watch and numerous local organizations accusing the local media of undertaking a planned campaign to associate Muslims with corona virus, as it is happening in India, to poison the Sinhalese minds against Muslims.

The island’s helpless and voiceless Muslims community is seething with anger.

In view of the growing pressure from the Muslim community, Muslim parliamentarians met Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa to appeal to him to allow burial   as it is done in many parts of the world.

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa met them after party leaders meeting at Temple Trees during the first week of this month. When the meeting was about to start Muslim parliamentarians pointed out they would like to meet separate. However the Prime Minister insisted on having the meeting there itself in the presence of others.

Muslim parliamentarians felt uncomfortable with the presence of parliamentarians Wimal Wirawansa and Udaya Gammanpila whose hostilities towards Muslims were common knowledge.

During the meeting SLMC Chairman Rauf Hakeem pleaded not to cremate Muslim corona victims as it violates the religious principles. He supported his plea by citing the World Health Organization circular, government’s own circular and the decision taken by numerous European countries to allow burial of Muslim corona dead bodies.

But, as expected, both Wimal Wirawansa and Gammanpila, opposed and read out statements insisting on cremating Muslim corona victims. This was backed by health ministry officials and the prime minister, insisted on cremating.

Muslims feel that this decision was to punish them for not voting for the government and please the Sinhalese hardliners. They also pointed out that Rajapaksa governments were responsible for Muslims not voting for their governments as memories of their sufferings   under them remain fresh.

There were appeals from Muslims and non-Muslims alike to allow the burials of Muslim corona victim’s dead bodies.

For example in a statement issued on 7 April 2020  a collective of citizens and organizations comprising leading civil society members, academics and activists, has written to President Gothabaya to follow WHO guidelines and allow burial.

They urged to consider the MOH Circular of April 1, 2020 and amendments dated March 31, 2020 to the MOH Provisional Clinical Practice Guidelines, and instead follow WHO Guidance on the disposal of bodies. They also called upon the president to address the country’s greatly distressed Muslims and put to rest their fears that they are somehow being punished, or that the country has little respect for their concerns.

The letter has been copied to Health Minister Pavithra Waniarachchi, Director General Health Services Dr. Anil Jayasinghe, Chief Epidemiologist Dr. Sudath Samaraweera, Director of the Infectious Diseases Hospital Dr. Hasitha Attanayake, Chief Judicial Medical Officer Dr. Ajith Tennakoon, Chairperson of the Human Rights Commission Dr. Deepika Udagama and WHO Sri Lanka Representative Dr. Razia Pendse.

They pointed out worldwide, including the Chinese province of Wuhan where the disease was first reported, corona victims were buried,

For example The British government assured Muslim and Jewish communities that they will have their religious burial rights respected and there will not be mandatory cremations.

French President Emmanuel Macron assured that Muslims who die in France during the coronavirus pandemic will be buried in accordance with their religious beliefs and traditions.

In Italy Muslim Covid-19 victims were accorded an honorable Islamic burial and up to ten family members and friends were allowed to attend the funeral prayer from a distance.

In India the Mumbai civic body’s order – that bodies of coronavirus patients can only be cremated, was withdrawn within hours after the state government intervened in the matter.

Urging governments and political leaders not to politicize corona virus issue World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has warned against using Covid-19 to “score political points”, stating that that he had received deaths threats and has been subjected to racist abuse.

Meanwhile Mariam Ardati, funeral and cemeteries advisor to the Australian National Imams Council (ANIC), said in a statement that Coronavirus cremations would be ‘horrific’

for Muslims, but it was permissible for bodies to be buried in leak-proof plastic bags. This measure was approved by the Islamic body known as the Fatwa Council.

She said” For Muslims, cremation is not only prohibited, it’s viewed as a desecration of the deceased.

“There remains a connection between the body and soul even in death, so this is something that is quite metaphysical, and it’s a very strongly held belief,” explains Mariam Ardati.

“To inflict that type of treatment on the body in death, it’s quite horrific to even consider.” And, according to Ms Ardati, it’s causing panic, “because these are rights that are afforded to people in death, just as someone has rights afforded to them while they’re alive”.

When a Muslim person dies, their body is honoured with four rituals.

First, the body is washed — with soapy water, clean water, then camphor-infused water — then it is wrapped in a funeral shroud, perfumed with incense.

“Then there’s a communal prayer that’s offered for the deceased, and that’s when the whole community comes together,” explains Ms Ardati.

The fourth rite is that the deceased is buried, not in a coffin, but laid directly onto the earth

Meanwhile in an appeal to Director General WHO, Organization of Islamic Countries, OIC, and the United Nations, Furkan Careem from Beruwala has appealed to prevail on Sri Lankan government to allow burial of Muslim corona victims.

Latheef Farook; How about Zaharan and his group who blew up into pieces. How about the Catholics that were blown by Zaharan et al. In Sri lanka, DO buddhists, Catholics and Hindus have rights ? Is it only the people of Islamic republic of Sri lanka ? Whose rights are more superior.
Are you a Human rights worshipper or one who respect the other humans also have the rights to live without getting killed for unnecessary causes ?

Iranians and Pakistanis have been arrested in mid sea trying to smuggle narcotics into Sri Lanka. Several Muslims have been arrested in Sri Lanka with possession of drugs. Is there a plan by Muslims all over the world to use this lull in activity in the world to peddle narcotics to non-Muslim countries and ruin their people.

I have great affection for the smiling people of Lanka, whom I have been visiting for decades. They have always accepted me as I am. Who after all is free of defects? I find the attitude of certain minorities disturbing in their refusal to let me socialize with their children. Colonic irrigation is my specialty and I have a lot to share.

But THAT DRUG KIN PIN- Nimal Lanza is not yet arrested why ?

Is that becausae he licks the balls of Rajapakshes on and on.

This country is being ruined not by minorities but by SINHALAYAs… but they behave as if they are saints.

“The following countries and jurisdictions have been identified to be major sources of precursor or essential chemicals used in the production of illicit narcotics:

Afghanistan, Argentina, Bangladesh, Belgium, Bolivia, Brazil, Burma, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Egypt, El Salvador, Germany, Guatemala, Hong Kong Administrative Region, Honduras, India, Indonesia, Iraq, Mexico, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, Republic of Korea, Singapore, South Africa, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, and the United Kingdom.” US Dept. of State.

Hey look, even India is in on the game. Look carefully at the list, and if you know how to count, count the number of Islamic nations compared to others, and your anti Muslim remarks becomes irrelevant. Looks like there is a HUGE plan all right. Lol.

There are two main regions which produce narcotics. One is in Asia comprising Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, parts of North India and Nepal, and other is in central / south America comprising Mexico, Columbia, Chile, Brazil etc. What affects Sri Lanka is the drugs that are being smuggled from Muslim countries in the region. Has anyone from a non-Muslim country been caught by Sri Lanka authorities.

        Lateef Farook,

Cause and Effect. You are seeing the effects and it’s fallout. Death, cremations. Burials, ruined economies and disrupted lives etc.

Go after the cause. China and WHO.

US President Donald Trump says he has instructed his administration to halt funding to the World Health Organization (WHO).

He said the WHO had “failed in its basic duty” in its response to the coronavirus outbreak.

He accused the UN body of mismanaging and covering up the spread of the virus after it emerged in China, and said it must be held accountable.

Mr Trump has previously accused the WHO of being biased towards China.

The US president has himself come under criticism at home over his handling of the outbreak.

“I am directing my administration to halt funding while a review is conducted to assess the World Health Organization’s role in severely mismanaging and covering up the spread of the coronavirus,” Mr Trump told a news conference at the White House.

“The WHO failed in its basic duty and it must be held accountable,” he added

Mr. Farook! You write: “The island’s helpless and voiceless Muslims community is seething with anger.”
That’s exactly what your opponents want you to do! Do you know why they do that and from where they learnt it? (They are excellent at twisting the Buddha’s teaching and turn it to their advantage!)
This is what the Buddha has said about anger:
“Being angry and holding onto anger is like drinking poison while expecting your opponent to die”. So, who is going to die at the end: angry Muslim community members or their opponents?
If your community continue to go against the country’s law you will be in real trouble in the years to come. Don’t think the UNP can continue to ‘cheat’ you through clandestine pacts, as it had been doing since 1948. The UNP has already learnt a lesson and they will re-learn it at the next parliamentary election too.
According to most recent news, even a 2/3rd majority at the next polls is not a distant possibility for the Pohottuwa? The only way to stop is to stop your anger!

      Lateef Farook,

Religion is the opium of the masses.Imbeciles follow Religion

It is about the safety of the living vs. rights of the dead based on cultural and religious beliefs, and respect for those beliefs. Since they are beliefs, not evidence-based.

      //
This is also true for the Beliefs of Sinhala Buddhists, not evidence-based.

It is clear that this cremation vs. burial controversy, soul, no soul, is the soul with the body or not, is all based on beliefs, as it is NOT based on evidence.
      //
Now the Pohotuwa who came to power with very little Muslim votes, do not expect future Muslim votes, because their audience is Sinhala-Buddhists, especially the Sinhala Buddhist racists. Given the safety considerations, the cultural habits, the overcrowding in the community and in some households, the probability of the spread of the Corona China Wuhan virus is higher than other households for Muslims, the focus should be in safety and not spreading.
      //
Your focus should be to educate the Muslims, how not to get the China virus, and if you get the virus, not to spread it, get the treatment from the IDH, stop infecting your community and the country at large. Everybody is a victim of the China Corona virus, globally, with 2 million infected and 100,000 or so dead.
      //
Focus on the living . The Muslims are equally stupid as their Sinhala Buddhist counterparts.

Remember, the basis for the 24 hour burial is for safety of the living.See how they are burying in Iraq.

Why not safety come first for the sake of the living, instead of belief-based dogma? Brainwashings?

The viruses are not living, just programs to infect, and have been there for more than 500 million years, and have been mutating.

        Hi Amarasiri,

Despite your reasoning for the right method of handling the dead bodies of Corona virus victims, your utterance like China Wuhan Virus or China virus sounds like racist comment. If you say viruses in the world have always been there then what made you to say it is “Chines Virus”. How did you know this virus was not in Sri Lanka or other parts of the world before it was lately identified in China? Donald Trump used the very word in a press conference and he was rebuked for that comment. Your integrity is getting damaged.. Please think about it.

          Ahmad Nadvi ,

“your utterance like China Wuhan Virus or China virus sounds like racist comment. “

Yes,. Thanks for picking it up. Yes, it is racist, against the Chinese. But why?

Because the Para-Sinhala Para-“Buddhism” is explicit. It has always been implicit. Ask the Tamils.

It is racist, but evidence-based, unlike the Para-Sinhala Para-“Buddhist” charges and comments against the Muslims , that is not evidence- based.

The reason for calling COVID-19 , that originated from Wuhan China, was to show to the Para-Sinhala Para-“Buddhists” it is racist, bur evidence based, UNLIKE the charges by the Para-Sinhala Para-“Buddhists”. Furthermore, if the racist “Buddhists” want to accuse some race or group, they should go after the Chinese.

Hope, it clarifies, Amarasri’s arguments. The objective was not to show racism towards, the Chinese, but to point out the double standards and lies of the Para-Sinhala Para-“Buddhists”, and counter the arguments.,

                Amanasiri,
There was no racism in Sinhale before the arrival of colonial rulers. If Native Sinhalayo were racists, they would not have saved The-mala Muslims and allowed them to settle down in interior parts of the country when they faced persecution by Portuguese. Sinhalayo accepted Nayakar Kings, after they embraced Buddhism. Sinhalayo gave citizenship to slaves brought by colonial rulers and abandoned in this country.
With the import of millions of Dravida slaves by colonial rulers and Brits colonizing Sinhale, racism was introduced to this country. Brits who considered Sinhalayo as their enemy deliberately promoted tension between Sinhalayo and The-mala people in Yapanaya by using Malabar Well-ala Demalu. Malabar Well-ala The-malu took advantage of this and spread racist sentiments among The-mala people depicting Sinhalayo as their main enemy to realize their ulterior motives. After Brits left, Well-ala The-mala politicians continued to promote racist sentiments among The-mala people in Yapanaya leading to the terrorist campaign launched by The-mala people misled by Well-ala politicians. ‘Para’ The-malu are the hard core ‘RACISTS’.

“Evidence shows that Para-Sinhala Para-“Buddhists” are racists. Ask any Tamil.”

“Muslim parliamentarians felt uncomfortable with the presence of parliamentarians Wimal Wirawansa and Udaya Gammanpila whose hostilities towards Muslims were common knowledge.”

That by itself was the signal by the PM that he was going to listen to the voices of anti Muslim trouble makers, and that their presence in that meeting, spoke volumes to the Muslim politicians, and the message was clear. Why did MR insist on these racist creatures being there? For moral support?

Why should the Rajapaksa’s displease their Buddhist base? After all the elections are around the corner, and this would not have been an issue, if Sri Lanka simply followed UN rules, like the rest of the world, including Western nations, who seem to have more common sense. But here, they had the opportunity to weaponize a process that does not cost the government anything, and the Muslims would willingly organize themselves to give last rites to their dead. Are the Rajapaksa’s and their supporters experts in dealing with the disposal of those who lost their lives to this disease, and know more than all the UN experts, doctors, and scientists?

Once again the Rajapaksa’s never fail to show their racist tendencies, perhaps trying to emulate their neighbor Modi, who has been criticized strongly by the rest of the world.
Are we on that same path? The signs are certainly pointing that way.

      Lateef Farouk,

The PM knows how they came to power. The Sinhala Buddhist votes, fully supported by the Racists. It is their base. He will not antagonize their base.
      //
For the SLMC and the Muslim Parliamentarians, the Muslim vote is their base. They are singing to their voter base
      //
Now both get to retain their voter bases, thanks to the Wuhan China-19 virus, renamed COVID-19 virus. Viruses evolved millions of years ago, even before the Devil , the human construct, came in the scene.
      //
Remember, only about 3 to 4 percent of the infected die. Based on the data, most who due have some other underlying health issues, such as asthma, diabetes, blood pressure, heart disease, kidney disease etc., irrespective of their race, religion and color.
      //
The Wuhan China Corona virus is very Egalitarian, but avoid it, and don’t be a host. With no host, it will die, until the next one comes along. //

Cremation or Burial, Living is Best, and avoid the Corona virus.

        Lateen Farouk,

        From Iraq.

Some of the fear surrounding the Corona virus disease stems from the Muslim rituals surrounding death, said Sherine Hamdy, a professor of medical anthropology at the University of California at Irvine who has worked extensively in Middle Eastern communities.

“You don’t want to be forced into quarantine, you don’t want to be forced into the hospital because those social, family bonds are very strong,” she said. “You want to die within the family.

“The worst thing in the world isn’t to die, but it’s to die away from your family and your community and to have no control over what happens to your body.”

The Islamic tradition requires swift burial, preferably within 24 hours of death. The longer the delay, the more people fear for the soul of the deceased.

Adding to the problems is the tradition of washing the bodies of people who have just died, which the authorities fear could spread the virus.

“The coronavirus and pandemics overall cause disruptions of social and religious practices, and it’s not easy to tell people that the coronavirus is stronger than God,” said Omar Dewachi, a professor of medical anthropology at Rutgers University, who was born and brought up in Iraq.

Quarantining those who are infected imposes a double humiliation in many Iraqi communities. First, it assures that everyone in the neighborhood will learn about the illness. Second, if the victim is an adult male, it signifies that he is no longer able to protect his wife, his children or in the case of an elder brother, his younger siblings, and so has fallen short of fulfilling his role in the family.

The virus is egalitarian .Stay away from it and those who are infected and asymptomatics who carry the virus.

Christians also bury their dead. Are they making a huge fuss over this?
Give muslims an inch-allah and they will take a mile
Sinhala modayas are partly responsible for this islamic virus spreading in Sri Lanka. They were so blinded with hatred towards tamils (who were never a threat to their existance) that they have enabled the real threat to come via the back door.

What fuss? Going to meet the Prime Minister to make a request is a “fuss”? You have no clue what the word “fuss” means. It is the Islamaphobes who are making a fuss here, the trolls filled with hate. The Muslims have a right to make a request, like any other democratic country. We know what happens when people make a fuss in Sri Lanka, they get shot. In Rathupaswala, people protested their dirty water, and they were killed. Now that is worthy of making a fuss.
How many miles have the Muslims taken so far?

      John,

Not only in Sri Lanka, even in this forum people were molly coddling them. Sometimes I was the only voice against the barbarians.

Btw, this has nothing to do with cremation or burial. How could a group of people who blast themselves to death worry about what happens to a dead body.

This is all about diverting the attention away from the upcoming anniversary of a tragedy that took place.

Moreover, these barbarians have coronavirus cases per percentage than any other race in Sri Lanka. They are bringing it on purpose to decimate the Sinhala population.

Time for mass internment of Muslims.

      john,
You say Tamils were never a threat to the existence of Native Sinhalayo. You must be joking. ‘Para’ Demalu invaded the Land of Native Sinhalayo and Vedda Eththo 52 time since Third Century BC up to 1505 and completely destroyed the cradle of Sinhala Buddhist civilization in North and East of the country based on the cities Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa.
Before 1505, Native Sinhalayo managed to chase away ‘Para’ invaders but during colonial rule, they brought the enemy of Sinhalayo and dumped them in Sinhale. To make the situation worse, dumb Sinhala politicians gave citizenship to them. But, instead of been grateful to the kindheartedness of Native Sinhalayo, the descendants of slaves started to slaughter Native Sinhalayo in order to grab a piece of land from Sinhale to establish a separate State based on a bogus claim ‘Traditional Homeland’ for the descendants of slaves.

Majeed, a soldier, says his father’s body was among a group of bodies the government intended to bury in a field near Baghdad, outside the city. But tribal leaders refused to allow the bodies to be buried there, mistakenly fearing they could spread disease.

They were always manipulated by their power hungry selfish self-centred politicians and elite. First they were brainwashed to think that they are all Arabs and thought hate their actual immigrant Tamil ancestry and heritage from South India, by these politicians , elite and clergy , so that they can alienate them from the rest of the Tamils and control them for their own selfish power hungry games, then brain washed to think being a Muslim is an ethnicity or race, when it reality it is a religious identity not a race or ethnicity . Anyone can be a Muslim , a Christian , Buddhist or Hindu. Not just Arabs. Most Muslims are non Arabs and around 10% of the Arabs are not Muslims . They are either Christian and some Druze.

Let us be clear that religious belief cannot take precedence over public interest.
In this instance, there is unfounded fear that burial will lead to the spread of the virus, and there are people capitalising on that. That fear needs addressing.

Not only burial even cremation involves a risk of spread owing to crowding and lack of due protection. That needs addressing.

Muslims are very careful about their dead bodies but they give least or no care about health workers & other people of the country. First they started protests against quarantine centers in their areas, even Tamils & Muslims protest in front of Baticolo hospital not to admit corona patients to their hospital. Patient was from their own community. Died gem merchant was in hiding & going to various health institute to get treatments hiding he came from abroad. There were several such occasions in Kalutara, Kalubowila, Negombo, NHSL, Jayawardena hospitals causing lot of doctors & other health workers to be quarantined. One corona infected Muslim even went to cancer hospital. Think of how would be the mentality of health personals who face situation like this. All the dead bodies are handled equally. Died 44 year Sinhala person at Welikanda who came from Italy after 4 years was not able to see his close relative no able to do last rituals for him also. How would be their mentality. Catholics also do not do cremation.

Muslim people live in over crowded houses. In one infected family there were 21 members living in one place, in another 16 & one another 13. If government not imposed cerfive & quarantine most affected will be Muslims.

After Tsunami people in SL did not eat fish for some time because they thought fish eat dead bodies which thrown to sea. Government tried to change that idea but people did not listen.

Muslim MPs seems to manipulate MR but he made them to listen to doctors. If MR agreed, opposition can blame him and score some points.

thanks for recaping all the bits closely. But what matters is why to attack the muslims through their biased media channels as if they are second citizens of this country ?
      :
Just going by one man’s disagreement to generalize all as if they would stand against cremation and WHO or NATIONAL burial guide lines is no right I guess. :

And the most known fact is if Italians, Germans, French, English, Americans and all others would bury those bodies, why cant govt of our country to go for that. If there are no places to bury the dead – why cant they find the places where ground water is not touched ?

Instead of finding a solution, but to shoot the messenger to the manner you and many would do – can bring us nowhere right ? Peoples of varied religious sentiments, would remain devious — as a country and a nation whohas been longing to rebuild, but to allow widen from one another should be avoided by every means.
Besides, these issues, burying the dead is a highly sensitive issue right?

I really dont think that MUSLIM srilankens would not respect NATIONAL laws regarding the dead – but the problem in this country today, is.. the rulers dont seem to stop their racism biased propaganda. If this would have been in europe, police would arrest those who spread racial videos or the like stuff against fellow citizens. So long Rajakshes are in power, they would not stop any kind of extremism, racism based propaganda why ?.

100s of cases of rape, sexual abuse, child abuse reported
            7 February 2020

Some 142 incidents of rape, 42 of serious sexual abuse and 54 of child abuse have been reported from various police divisions in the country during the first 15 days of 2020, Parliament was informed today.
Chief Government Whip Johnston Fernando said this in response to a question asked by UNP MP Hesha Withanage and pointed out that investigations into 78 incidents of rape, 21 of serious sexual abuse and 34 of child abuse have been completed so far.
He said most of the cases of rape, serious sexual abuse and child abuse were reported from the Batticaloa police divisions while 44 cases of rape, eight cases serious sexual abuse and 17 cases of child abuse were reported from this police division during the first 15 days of this year.
Meanwhile, according to the statistics tabled by the Chief Government Whip, 11,998 incidents of rape, 4,806 of serious sexual abuse and 5,891 of child abuse were reported from 2012 to 2020. (Yohan Perera and Ajith Siriwardana)

In Sri Lanka all the people are honored

But dead bodies are generally not honored, only their names are honored.

So cremate all the corona infected dead bodies irrespective of their racial/religious identity.

Later @ the end of pandemic make a common tombstone mentioning all the corona infected cremated people’s name on it whether Sinhalese or Tamils or Muslims.

That’s the way to dignify dead ones due to corona infection.

        SJ

        Good argument

But it’s a humane way to pay respects for the dead person, not to respect the dead body.

For the beloved ones the dead body may be precious.

It may be ego for some to keep embalmed body for many days; that’s social development, not solely to respect the body.

Muslims bury within 24 hrs because it’s religious requirement, they’re afraid not to do that because too much of devotion is fear.

It’s good to keep dead body for a day or 2 to concentrate on death, a kind of meditation.

There’re lot of Muslims who haven’t seen their relations (sometimes own family members’) dead bodies.

They think even butchers go to the heaven when buried within 24 hrs, that’s why they’re crying against cremation.

When flood like natural calamities stuck in the recent past, Muslim units efficiently took care of them and spread out helps to other neighborhoods too. They treated victims equally. But Hakeem lead the united Muslim Ministers Union’s resignation and that pushed the election to one side. Every help Muslims youths did was forgotten by all other communities because the politicians short sighted self-actualization games. This funeral issue was started by Hakeem-Rishard to make sure they attract the most votes to negotiate more minister positions in Slap Party government. Now Muslim writers have taken over it. Latheef have positioned him as the dedicated agitator on empty matters like this. It was Ranil’s advice to the Muslim Ministers Union to resign all together. But even that Ranil has advised these Muslim politicians and writers not to overblow this funeral issue. That will badly affect UNP and strengthen Slap Party. It doesn’t seem to be heeded. Sinhalese attention & mind are split into three pieces by election, disease & battered life by job losses and food shortage. In that situation, will creating fear and adding as forth problem to Sinhalese will help Muslims to get anything they want? It is ok talking with the high level of the government. It is worthless annoying the Sinhalese and carrying out an affectless campaign like this within Muslims. “Tharaiyil Irukkira Theelai pidichu madiyile Paudathai”(Don’t pick up the scorpion crawling on the land and put it on your lap). So Muslim writers have to take responsibility for what they are doing.

      Mallung
It is a surprisingly sensible start.
But people forget all good others do not for any fault of the other but out of their ingrained ingratitude.
They also easily forget their own evil deeds.

        Savams,

“They also easily forget their own evil deeds.”
There people pretend like they could not remember, they are laughed at as people with selective memory. There are people pretend to advocate for media freedom and comes to write on CT but in their last birth banned CT in lanakwe. There are people pretend like peaceful citizens who in their last birth started wars without principles, but only to ridicule others and when seeing lost, then abandoned it now(?) . There are people pretend like friends but write secretly to CT to yank them from CT. And There are people pretends like sleeping, but may not have been sleeping, but watching what is going on.

There is a kids’ story: Once a man and his woman had an argument and they both went to bed without cooking and eating. Later past middle of the night the woman woke up the man and asked to tell her a story because she was hungry and could not catch sleep. The man said “This the story and sub story for all stories. Hey the woman, who cooked Pokkai on the small pot, barbecued the dried fish on that fire and if she took a plate it may make noise so she ate it on the leave, just go to sleep without bothering me”. Man, people do all kind of jugglery on the stages of the drama they act.

You know the path to hell ? or you lack the knowledge of it too?

Why drag politics and religion into this? If the government imposes a rule under an emergency situation it should be respected by all the communities. If not for Sri Lankans who came from Italy and the Muslims who broke the law, the problem in the country would not have been that bad. Imagine how some tried to endanger the communities by fleeing quarantine in boats! A leading Muslim politician has a problem with fire and that is why he started all this nonsense.

What is so special about the Muslims? All religions have protocols pertaining to death. Scientists are not fully aware of the dangers of the Corona virus and it is called a pandemic because of its rapid spread. Under these circumstances we all need to forego our rights to curb the virus and avoid large scale deaths. Everyone should think of being a one nation and assist the authorities to curb this virus. The you can have your burials the way you want.

Not only the Muslims but also the Buddhists also deserve respected funerals. But the health of the nation is more important than all of this. Forget the religion for a movement until we overcome this deadly disease. I must request the Colombo Telegraph not to highlight these types of issues as they are only important for illiterate, uneducated people and for a bunch of politicians.

Muslims say, even if whole 10% of muslims die, 10% is far more important than the balance 90%, simply because believers are important than the non-believers.

This is a Muslim person making these ‘statements’ about burials. I hope this person realizes that only the COVID positive Muslims are being cremated. All other Muslim deaths are followed by usual burial. There cannot be exceptions: all those who die with COVID should be cremated.
If this is the attitude of the UN at this time of crisis, and with the WHO tagging the line of China and concealing information, these “organizations” like the UN and WHO are totally useless and inept at handling a crisis of this magnitude. Trump is right (for once) to kick out the WHO. Hope the UN is next in his lines.

For one or two Burials may be possible under stringent condition, No body knew our death rate so low. Had there were many required burial it would been a unmanageable task because indiscipline characters among those got COVID 19. Many imported from Indonesia. Why do not disclose what instructions got from there. Be happy those Muslims are treated equally in hospitals and quarantined with best possible way. Just don’t make unwanted issues at this hour. Life is more important than dead rituals under these condition unless you have hidden agenda.
