Stories & True Buddha Dhamma: What Do Scholars Advise?

By W.A. Wijewardena

Dr. W.A Wijewardena

Conforming to the Tradition

Thus, I heard: Recently I overheard two lady devotees of the Buddha having an intense conversation on a hotly debated current event in Sri Lanka, the alleged insultation to Buddhist tradition by a young lady stand-up comedian. One of the devotees in conversation was in her mid-seventies and the other in early eighties. The devotee in her mid-seventies has been a faithful practitioner of the Dhamma preached by the Great Master. She had devoted a great deal of her time for listening on the internet to discourses delivered by leading Buddhist preachers of the day and, therefore, was well informed of the crux of Dhamma. She had been sharing the virtues of those discourses with friends and all others who had been interested in listening to her. The other devotee was not so versed in the Dhamma but had a patient ear to listen to her.

I heard the knowledgeable devotee telling the other: “You know this woman who is notorious for relating vulgar stories to amuse her audiences has openly defamed the Buddha and insulted the Buddhists by calling the Prince Siddhartha the ‘lad of Suddhodhana’ and ridiculing the miracle he performed by walking on seven lotuses immediately after being born. She has not only defamed the Buddha but also undermined the rich Buddhist culture”.

Weliwitiye Sri Soratha Nayaka Thero

The other devotee was listening without arguing. Emboldened by this captive listener, the first devotee went on presenting her view: “It is right for the Police to arrest her and institute legal action against this wretched woman who would have obviously been paid by some foreign elements to destroy Buddhism. She and those elements are mistaken because no one can destroy Buddhism as it is above all those religions in the world”.

The other devotee nodded her head in agreement.

I do not find the line of their argument unusual because that was how even I had been instructed at the college and at the Sunday Dhamma School those days. Therefore, they were just conforming to what they had been told.

Wisdom of Founder of Vidyodaya University

Rev Professor Kotagama Wachissara Thero

But it took me back to mid-1960s when I started my university career in public administration at the old Vidyodaya University. The Vice Chancellor at that time was the world-renowned Buddhist scholar Rev Professor Walpola Rahula. The University had been founded by an equally renowned Buddhist scholar Rev Weliwitiye Sri Soratha. In his wisdom, Rev Soratha had made it compulsory for all students at the university, irrespective of the stream of education whether it is in arts, science, or management, to pass two papers, one in English and the other in Buddhist Civilisation, at both the first year and at the final year. To proceed to the second year, all students should pass these two papers in the first year and to get the degree, they should pass them at the final year. Even if they have scored sufficient marks to get a first class in the other relevant papers, they will not graduate from the university unless they have passed in these two papers. Hence, it was a real agony for students at the time but in hindsight, I consider it as a blessing. This curriculum involving compulsory English and Buddhist Civilisation had continued till 1972 when it was abolished after the Vidyodaya University was redesignated the Vidyodaya Campus of the newly formed integrated University of Ceylon, an unsuccessful university reform done by the then Sirimavo Bandaranaike government. That was because as in today, she had done it without consulting academia or experts on university education.

Mandatory Learning of Buddhist Civilisation by All Students

The subject called Buddhist Civilisation at the old Vidyodaya University covered Buddha Dhamma, comparative religion especially those religions that prevailed in ancient India, and how the Buddhist culture evolved both in India and in ancient Lanka. The treatment of the subject was at a higher level in the final year than in the first year. The main textbook used to teach Buddha Dhamma was ‘What the Buddha Taught’ by Rev Walpola Rahula, who incidentally happened to be the Vice Chancellor of the university at that time. Our lectures were conducted by another renowned Buddhist scholar of the day, Rev Professor Kotagama Wachissara, Head of the Department of Theravada Buddha Dhamma at the University. Rev Wachissara was known for his critical approach to teaching religion.

It is Buddha Dhamma and Not Buddhism

One thing about the old Vidyodaya University and Rev Wachissara was that they deliberately refrained themselves from calling it ‘Buddhism’ because any ‘ism’ is a dogma that should be accepted without critical review. For them, what was taught by the Buddha was Buddha Dhamma and it was this term that was used by the scholars of that era at the university.

The Stand-up Comedian

ev Prof Walpola Rahula Thero

I recall that the lectures were conducted at the only available spacious hall at the university, named the Bandaranaike Hall, a tribute paid to the late Prime Minister S.W.R.D Bandaranaike who had been instrumental in setting up the Vidyodaya University by upgrading the centuries old Vidyodaya Pirivena. Rev Wachissara who had joined the new university as a lecturer had been a teacher at the Ananda College after completing his doctorate in Buddhist studies at the University of London. He was driven around in a small baby Austin car though he was a giant of a six-footer’s dimension. He also walked around barefoot. Students had aptly nicknamed him ‘maha kalu sinhalaya’ or Big Dark Sinhalese not out of any disrespect but with full of love and affection. He used to walk to the podium of the Bandaranaike Hall without any lecture notes and deliver the lectures for hours keeping the attention of the audience glued to the giant figure behind the podium. He kept the students with him by sending them into waves of laughter continuously by relating humour stories whilst delivering the lectures. Some of these stories were about the miraculous performances of Prince Siddhartha depicted in the Buddha Charitha such as walking on seven lotus flowers immediately after he was born. In this sense, Rev Wachissara was a highly rated ‘stand-up comedian’.

Need for Being Critical, Probing, and Challenging

Rev Wachissara’s critical approach to learning was in line with the learning philosophy pronounced by the university’s founder, Rev Soratha. It is reported that this learned Buddhist monk had advised the first batch of the university students that they should be ‘critical, probing, and challenging the orthodoxy’. This philosophy, the foundation of scientific inquiry, has been beautifully incorporated into the anthem of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, the successor to the Vidyodaya University, by one of its best products, Senior Professor Sunil Ariyaratna. Rev Wachissara was simply following this rich tradition.

Removing Miracles from True Buddha Dhamma

He treated us as his children and addressed us also in the same way. He said in his stoic voice: “Children, the true Buddha Dhamma is different from what is being posited in literature which has been highly influenced by the extant Brahmic understanding of the world. Therefore, there have been many miracles incorporated into the Buddha’s character as well as his early childhood. It is said that Prince Siddhartha, immediately after being born, had walked on seven lotus flowers and pronounced his attaining Buddhahood in the future. This is very unusual for any human being. If we don’t remove these unbelievable stories relating to the Buddha from what we learn, we can’t spread the Buddha Dhamma in the Western world which will start laughing at us”. In this way, he put true Dhamma into our heads.

The Letchworth Experience

Many years later in early 2000s, I had the occasion to personally experience what he said in late 1960s when my elder brother who was a Nayaka Thero and I established a Buddhist temple in Letchworth in the UK. A young Buddhist monk who had just graduated in Buddhist studies with honours from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura was installed as the head of this temple.

Whenever I visited the UK, I made it a point to go and see this young Buddhist monk in his new temple. I was so happy to see his progress every time I went there. He had been spreading the message of the Buddha not only to those who have embraced the faith but also to those who have been practicing other religions.

When I spoke of his achievements in a congratulatory tone, he confided in me about his greatest difficulty. “There are high schools here which teach comparative religion as a part of the curriculum. When they came to know that I was here representing the Buddha, I was invited to deliver guest lectures. They were very inquisitive and wanted to know Buddha’s view on things like Einstein’s relativity or Darwin’s evolutionary theory. I knew what the Buddha had taught but didn’t know those new scientific concepts. I had to learn all of them anew. Also, they didn’t accept all those miraculous stories relating to Prince Siddhartha or the Buddha. I had to be careful not to talk about them at that audience. When I taught them the true Buddha Dhamma, they were very happy”. Several years later, this young monk returned to lay life after getting consent of the devotees of the temple but the temple at Letchworth is continuing its mission of spreading Buddha Dhamma among the residents.

Value of Free Inquiry

Emphasising on the value of free inquiry, Rev Walpola Rahula in his 1932 book Sathyodaya, translated into English in 2019, says as follows: “The general approach to Buddhist teaching in our country today mirrors the episode of suppressing free inquiry by a saint like Saint Francis who had admonished a student for trying to be better than he. The students of Dhamma rarely challenge tradition, religious scriptures, or a viewpoint of the teacher. The teachers too tend to consider the students as subordinates. Diverse views and opinions are not usually tolerated. This prevents the students from exploring the teaching with a critical and inquiring mind” (p 69).

Elaborating on this point, he further says that it is natural to have conflicting viewpoints on any subject including religion. He says: “If someone is unduly disturbed when faced with differing opinions, it reflects the person’s inadequate disposition”. Therefore, a chief Buddhist monk has no right to summarily overrule an opinion of an ordinary Buddhist who has studied the scriptures. Both have studied the same Dhamma and had had no opportunity to discuss the same with the Buddha. Rev Rahula concludes that accepting anything in the scriptures without subjecting it to critical analysis is not in order.

Docile Sri Lankan Society

Rev Rahula also notes the following in Sathyodaya: “The Sri Lankan society remains in a docile state in relation to exploring and probing the truth. Almost everyone, from the knowledgeable scholar down to the man in the street, accepts traditions and whatever written in books with much reverence. Little effort is made to validate and establish the truth. Unless a personal loss is envisaged, seeking the truth is of insignificance. Anything written in Pali is acknowledged as Buddha’s teaching without debate. No one inquires if our customs and views are in line with Dhamma. No one bothers to reflect why our ethical and moral values have declined despite our noble traditions” (p 75). This was his observation about society in 1930s, but it seems it is valid even to today’s Sri Lanka.

Buddha’s Advice to Bhikkus: Not to Get Offended by Criticisms nor Euphoric by Praises

What Rev Rahula has remarked here has been presaid by the Buddha in the Brahmajaala Sutta in the Digha Nikaya. Advising the Bhikkus how they should respond to critics and praisers of the Buddha, he has said that the Bhikkus should not get offended by critical remarks made by anyone about the Buddha. If they get offended, it is not good for them. Instead, they should explain to those critics that because of these reasons, those criticisms levelled against the Buddha are not valid. Similarly, they should not be overjoyed by the praises which people will shower on the Buddha. Such euphoria is not good for them. Instead, they should examine whether those praises are genuine and valid. If they are, then, the Bhikkus should explain to them that under these circumstances those praises are correct and under these circumstances, they are not valid. What this means is that if anyone feels that some remarks about the Buddha or the Dhamma are defamatory, they should explain matters to them without seeking the legal powers of governments to suppress them. In other words, it is not through repressive measures or insultations that the critics of the Buddha or his Dhamma should be answered, but through friendly and constructive debate. These debates are encouraged by the Buddha as well as by the Buddhist traditions. It is an integral part of the Buddhist Civilisation that was taught to us in the old Vidyodaya University.

Honouring Opponents in a Debate

But how should the parties in a debate should be treated? By hurling insultations at them? Or by hurting them physically? The answer has been given by the leading Buddhist monarch, Emperor Asoka, in one of his rock inscriptions. The foresightful and learned emperor has dictated that when conducting debates and tackling disputations, “the opponents should be duly honoured in every way on all occasions”. He has further dictated that “anyone who upholds his religion and looks at all others disparagingly does the biggest harm to his own religion”. These words of wise counsel by Emperor Asoka should be chanted by every Buddhist like a mantra.

Do Stories Matter?

Stories matter. Oxford-educated historian Yuval Noah Harari says that cultures are built not on scientific records but on stories. Harvard psychologist David McClelland with evidence has proved that heroic stories told to children by their mothers and grandmothers motivate them to go for high achievement targets in later life. We as children believed in every word in those stories and also acted on them but when we gained adulthood, we realized the difference between a fiction and reality. If someone believes in those stories after adulthood, it is demonstrative of his immaturity. A nation with such immature people cannot prosper. When Martin Wickramasinghe fictionalized the life of the Buddha in Bavatharanaya in early 1970s, many leading figures prevailed upon the then Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike to ban the novel and put Wickramasinghe behind bars. Like a true stateswoman, she rejected those calls. I have written about it in a previous article.

Wise Counsel of Buddhist Scholars

The Buddhist scholars who preached the virtue of tolerance and the importance of critical review of everything that one finds in the world like Weliwitiye Sri Soratha, Kotagama Wachissara, and Walpola Rahula are no longer with us. But their wise counsel should be practiced by all Sri Lankans when handling matters that are not acceptable to them. The opponents should be defeated not by causing physical harm or subjecting them to repression. They should be defeated by subjecting them to critical review.

The current fiasco involving a stand-up comedian should also be handled through constructive debate and not through repressive measures. Why cut off a finger to rid it of pain when the same can be attained by rubbing a soothing oil? It will permit a great learning opportunity to extant Sri Lankan society.

In my view, Sri Lanka should not miss this opportunity.

On the fuss over the stand-up comedian, I tried hard to ‘listen’ to Dr. W.A Wijewardena. All I heard was a, ‘No comment’. Very unfortunate.

Thanks WWW for a beautiful narrative!

Yes!, The scientific method should be made relevant to religious inquiries as well , that is how we could pay real tribute to Buddha Dharma!.

I am disappointed with you. You didn’t read this well-diguised comment:

Ven. Wachissara was the head monk at the temple in Pamankada & my father often used to visit him on Sunday afternoons. My father’s pet subject was Eastern Philosophy & they both had regular discussions. I can only vaguely remember Ven Wachissara but I remember his white Mini quite well. His last ‘dana’ may have been at my uncle’s, a few days before his death, when he told my father that he would be back the following Sunday after his minor surgery for the usual discussion but he passed away on the operating table, not regaining conscious after the operation. He was known for his humorous remarks & for his deep knowledge of Buddhism without the folklore, which he dismissed as possibly simple illustrations for the illiterate who were unable to grasp the wisdom of Buddha. He would have been a role model for current monks & would be turning in his grave (if he was buried, instead of cremated) at the current state of Buddhism in SL & the yob monks we have today.

            Cont.
In the mid 60s, Ven. Wachissara had bumped into my aunt in the London underground but my aunt couldn’t recognise him as he was wearing a hat & a long overcoat because of the cold. When my aunt told him that she didn’t recognise him without his robe, he had assured her that he was wearing the robe under his coat but opening his coat to prove it in public would be considered inappropriate. Another time, Ven. Wachissara was asked by a student how monks suppress lust, to which he is supposed to have retorted ”do you think we have candlesticks (itipanthan)?’ I am sure may of his students have heard this joke but in the current context, he would be vilified. His witty remarks could be considered as that of a ‘stand-up comedian’, despite his serious side as an intellectual monk.

          Hey Native,
          _
In the “DDR & The Moral-Cum-Political Question,” I couldn’t reply to your reply on my comment about Germany being Socialist after WW2 (the comments were closed). So now I will reply to your reply on my comment :

Germany (i.e. West Germany), was totally Socially Democratic, and floating on the waves of US Capitalistic funds (money) to rebuild their society – such that was given readily by US and its allies to ensure American Industrialism and Mercantilism retained its position as opposed to Russian Communism.
          _
This means that rich and poor of Germany contributed equably all they could to build up their society, and there was no stealing from poor Germans provident funds (there were no provident funds anyway, and most of the money came from the rich who somehow managed to regain any hoarded wealth…what good people).

After, and I say again, AFTER all was stabilized, Germany installed its own in-house Capitalistic system. And when that started failing, they quickly opened the doors to Communist East Germany, so they could start the ball rolling on Socialism again.

            Ramona dear,
Really, you should write a book, “The history of the World according to Prophet Ramona of Pittsburgh”.
It may well outsell Terry Pratchett.

              https://thetricontinental.org/studies-1-ddr/

note the .org.(Scholarly article). Also note the words “massive accrual of capital under the U.S Marshall Plan. Now what Sri Lanka has been given under IMP is miniscule in comparison. Either IMF(via US) doesn’t have the money, or they are not too adverse towards Socialism this time around.

“The West German economy recovered quickly from the aftermath of the war through the massive accrual of capital under the U.S. Marshall Plan (an investment program for the reconstruction of Europe). It was not long before West Germany had grown into the strongest economic market on the continent. With its rearmament and the establishment of an army under the leadership of hundreds of former Nazi military members as well as its entrance into the NATO military alliance, West Germany became a European outpost and protector of U.S. hegemony.”

                https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_Democratic_Party_of_Germany

Note that the SPD- the social democratic party was well integrated into West Germany’s political structure. Germans, being more evolved, understood the importance of Center Left (unlike our King Louis’s mindset – Jungle Book)

“In West Germany, the SPD became one of two major parties alongside the CDU/CSU. In the Godesberg Program of 1959, the SPD dropped its commitment to Marxism, becoming a big tent party of the centre-left. The SPD led the federal government from 1969 to 1982, 1998 to 2005 and again since 2021. It served as a junior partner to a CDU/CSU led government from 1966 to 1969, 2005 to 2009 and from 2013 to 2021. ‘

WAW, better to teach real Buddha Dhamma, Buddhist civilization, Buddhist way of living to those rogue SB monks in Lanka before introducing into educational curriculum. There are many graduates , done well in their lives without such education. When we have people like Ganasara , ( did you view the recordings from Japan, thanks to Ranjan ) , what’s the purpose of teaching anyone ??? Didn’t Gotha aka Hitler / Rajapaksas claim they were born, raised, educated, practice Buddha Dhamma ????? Black Lankan is absolutely right. Currently what is practiced and preached in Lanka is racist political Buddhism , not Buddha Dhamma.

I would request the readers to lay their hands on the book: “The Buddha and His Dhamma” written by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar – the well-known follower of Buddha Dhamma from the “Suddra Caste” and the architect of the Indian Constitution. I think you can download it on Google. This book was first published in 1957.

In this book, Dr. Ambedkar narrates how Siddhartha was “EXILED” by the King’s Court – “Sanga” (equal to today’s Cabinet in which Siddhartha was a Minister) for being the only dissentient to a decision made to go to war with the neighboring King over the distribution/sharing water from the river “Revathi”. So, according to Dr. Ambedkar, Siddhartha did not do “Abhinishkaranaya” (gave up worldly riches to become an “Acetic”) as we are taught, but “SACKED” and “EXILED” by the order of the King (his father) in keeping with the directive of the “Sanga” – the Cabinet. That “NO NONSENSE” management that I always speak about was in practice even before Gauthama Buddha’s time.

So in the “Interpretation” of “The ICCPR” of Sri Lanka, Dr. Ambedkar must be POSTHUMOUSLY given a “LIFE TERM” in jail for the DEFAMATION of Buddha’s life story.

Simon, as you said our SB racist wrote their own Dhamma, history, create archaeological evidence, enforce way of living and preach BS. They also plan and organize violence / pogroms. Morbidly obese , Asgiri chapter Ana-madu-we Thera says depleting NGO culture is behind Muthu Raja’s return to Thailand. He also said “Buddhist festivals lack tamed animals , it’s an attempt to destroy our SB culture.” (see video on DM). Can someone tame the elephant looking Thera, to know what is animal abuse is about ???

There is a new video on Goon Ampitiya Sumanaratna (not verified ), having a verbal / physical altercation with group of police officers. If true, will he be arrested like Gagendrakumar , for not allowing to do their job ???? In the meantime, as expected, showman Jerome left to the U.K for “a good life”. Jerome’s case is not the same as Natasha. Natasha works for living, whereas Jerome is a fraud, cheats people, has money launderer/ smuggler as his mentor, and visits Rajapaksas for a small prayer. Anyone who keeps company with Mahinda has to be a crook.

What’s going on in Lanka ??? Is it the change in climate, making our Theras “aroused”. Yet another video doing rounds where a Thera accompanied by two ladies, (apparently meditating together in private ) were stripped and thrashed, by locals before handing over to police. Now Tiran wants those who assaulted, Thera and his lady disciples , arrested, for not allowing to do their job ????

The two old ladies who were horrified at the comments of a comedian is obviously the result of years of brainwashing by the sermons of SL monks. I remember in the mid 90s, there was a quite a stir when rumors spread that Buddha relics (‘Dathu’) had appeared at the home of a lay preacher & public speaker, who happened to be a member of a famous cricketing family. This person was a neighbour of my in-laws & my wife’s grand mother, who would have been in the same age as the two devout ladies, was highly excited. I don’t know what happened to the ‘dathu’ phenomenon but old folks used to rush to this house in reverence for days
The sad fact is that those with blind faith are unable to accept the ridiculousness of these ‘facts’, they are demanding revenge, instead of seeing the lighter side. How backward can we be?

WAW does give a good description of the network of interactivity of the Buddhist clergy, and how beautifully they preach the religion. Buddhist culture in and out-of Sri Lanka is indeed very sophisticated and culturally elevated (except of course any politically driven madmen who are not monks at all).

But the only people angry about Natasha E. seem mostly the elderly ladies very fixated in their opinions and beliefs, who were either very “good” women in their younger days (good as in the Germanic context pre-1945), or suffered the system and are now applauding their endurance. This kind of culture cannot be of any great influence to functioning society as cognitive skills decrease after a certain age – only a few elderly possess the so-called wisdom and clarity of the aged.

Let’s forget about about Buddhism and Buddhist dharma for the time being.

Does the orange brigade help propagate the True teachings of the Buddha?
If so, how many non-Buddhist people in Sri Lanka, let alone the people in the world at large, have been convinced buy the orange brigade to follow the path of the Buddha?
None in my opinion! They propagate hate against Tamils, Muslims and Christians! They are a waste of state funds like many other – no wonder the country is bankrupt feeding and pampering these unproductive fellows.

When you were thought a religion during your childhood and reinforced by your parents and your own religious institutions it will be engraved in your mind in a such a way your life will be severely disturbed if those concept were later challenged by logical and scientific means. It applies to Buddhism, Christianity and Muslim religions.
Some educated and rationalized people will learn to discard folklore in those teachings and practice core principles. But major part of population take is as rule of law and ready to take violence as a resort to defend those myths in their religions.
To take few example from all three religions
Prince Siddhartha being an infant could never walk on lotus flowers
Mohammad never ask to cover female faces
Most serious medical conditions can’t cured by religious blessings by christian priest.
Most powerful religious institution are sophisticated cults and carry huge influence on governments so cunning politician like Ranil will give orders to arrest comedian who actually to be praised for showing Buddhist people to practice core Buddhism instead of mythical nonsense.

in my earlies memories of learning Buddhism in a Christian School like Trinity what I remember is that is was clearly pointed out that Buddha Dhamma is clearly separated from Buddhist literature . The Literature is a work of pure fiction and is meant for the weak of mind like the women WAW talks about.

I think this is true about most religions. but unfortunately this distinction is never made or understood in most other religions.

At the same time it is not inconsistent that this comedian is persecuted either in my opinion. Because the laws of the country should not be mistaken with any religions laws.

      Mahila,
The problem is not the Law, but how it is interpreted. The Colombo Magistrate, Thilina Gamage, seems to be a religious extremist who thinks Buddhist practices cannot be criticised, even by Buddhists. This is an utterly ridiculous position, which was struck down by the High Court judge, who said that people with a non-religious attitude should be free to criticize religion. Add to that the supposedly educated government prosecutor Dileepa Peiris accusing Natasha of making money from YouTube, as if it was a crime!
The biggest problem is the quality of the legal administration. As the judge said, the CID should not arrest people under the ICCPR simply because some political group says so.

        OC:
“Add to that the supposedly educated government prosecutor Dileepa Peiris accusing Natasha of making money from YouTube, as if it was a crime!”

To his shame, this episode has demonstrated Dileepa Peiris’ appallingly poor calibre as state prosecutor. Even after the High Court judge had given his opinion, Peiris still said that they would have no objection to Natasha being granted bail if she apologised for her non-offence!

“…a religious extremist who thinks Buddhist practices cannot be criticised, even by Buddhists.”
        OC,
Are Buddhist practices really Buddhist? (One could ask the same of any dogma.)

According to the norms of Justice, a judge should not let his personal feelings get in the way of truth.
This however is not the case in Sri Lanka, it seems to be exactly the opposite, Judges get carried away by money, social status of the defendants, religious and racial bias, etc.
It seems most judges are not objective or rational in their duty, sticking instead to emotional bias when giving judgement. This is the typical simple minded south asian mentality.
Sad that even the most responsible members of the society behave like village folk.
People who were clamouring to bring in foreign Judges to train our bunch were not wrong at all. Justice, fair play and equity are a fundamental necessity for establishing a strong, productive and progressed society.

It was reported in the news yesterday that Natasha had been granted bail by a Colombo High Court judge, who said that her alleged offence did not come under the ICCPR Act. The judge also questioned the propriety of arresting and remanding some one like Natasha under the above Act.

That no part of her stand-up comedy routine was actionable under Sri Lankan laws was obvious to any one with half a brain (the same applies to the case of Jerome Fernando, as I argued in a CT article earlier). This raises the question of why the Attorney General’s Dept. charge people like Natasha and Jerome under these laws. Is it because

    (1) They really believe the alleged offences come under the laws

    Or

    (2) They are under pressure by the religious and political authorities to file charges against them?

In the former case, the AG and his colleagues’ IQ is incredibly low and, in the latter case, they have sold their soul to the Devil. Maybe it’s a mixture of both?

      LJ,
“the AG and his colleagues’ IQ is incredibly low and, in the latter case, they have sold their soul to the Devil. Maybe it’s a mixture of both?”
The people manning the state’s legal department are only a reflection of the general population, who are easily whipped into a frenzy by conniving media like Derana. Even yesterday they devoted a lot of time to that antiquated dentist Gunadasa Amarasekara.

The IQs of many of our people is definitely far below average, especially the so called yellow brigade.
otherwise there is no explanation to why the Rajapaksas did what they did and got away with their crimes and are still indirectly pulling the strings.

Sri Lanka, its police apparatus and Judiciary have committed violence and a crime against Nathasha Edirisooriya. She was stopped from going abroad, arrested like a common criminal at the airport, and imprisoned for two months without being charged. These are the activities of a lawless state. Of idiotic and ill-qualified judges and officials. Belatedly, fortunately, the Colombo High Court Judge Adithya Patabendige has ruled that comedian Nathasha Edirisooriya was wrongly jailed. Today we read that another journalist was being questioned by the CID for holding a press conference related to the stand-up comedian. What a comedy of errors. Will all those responsible for this major fiasco be made to pay? Will they too be jailed, including those idiotic judges.

Most people seem to have forgotten the Dr. Shafi saga as well.
Not to mention the pogroms orchestrated by yellow pets at various times against minorities.
No charges were ever brought up against the perpetrators.

There are two serious doubts I have in the debating of the issues.
Did not the Buddha refused to perform a miracle to resurrect a dead child? Do his teachings point to miracles as a way to emancipate any?
Did he even mention blasphemy in his teachings?
He was a great teacher with a sense of humility and humor.

Agree. Morality is lost when you submit to emotions coming from a stem of hate, greed and fear.

Like other religions, teachings of Buddha must be supported by forensic evidence, perspective and logic.

Blind faith is dangerous. Faith can easily be put into more rational perspective.

I think tripitaka should be published in many languages along with commentaries.

Then only people can have a good arguments based on the logic provided.

Hate, Greed and Fear will never solve anything. It will only have a negative effect on that specific religion.
