A Muslim shrine at Potuvil, belonging to the Suffi sect was attacked by another Islamic group last Friday (27) with the promise that a mosque would be built on that spot within three months, the Island reported.

According to the newspaper, the Chairman of the Islamic Solidarity Front (ISF) Reyyaz Salley told them that about 50 to 60 persons had attacked the 300-year-old shrine. He claimed about 10 to 15 shrines and 25 mosques had been attacked all over the country by the extremists in recent years. Potuvil police said they were investigating the incident. Salley also said that the Wakfu Board, had jurisdiction over religious issues but it had been dissolved two month back, and a new board had not been appointed.

” Anti-Shia hate propaganda spread by Sunni religious figures sponsored by, or based in, Saudi Arabia and the Gulf monarchies, is creating the ingredients for a sectarian civil war engulfing the entire Muslim world. Iraq and Syria have seen the most violence, with the majority of the 766 civilian fatalities in Iraq this month being Shia pilgrims killed by suicide bombers from the al-Qa’ida umbrella group, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (Isis). The anti-Shia hostility of this organisation, now operating from Baghdad to Beirut, is so extreme that last month it had to apologise for beheading one of its own wounded fighters in Aleppo – because he was mistakenly believed to have muttered the name of Shia saints as he lay on a stretcher.
At the beginning of December, al-Qa’ida in the Arabian Peninsula killed 53 doctors and nurses and wounded 162 in an attack on a hospital in Sanaa, the capital of Yemen, which had been threatened for not taking care of wounded militants by a commentator on an extreme Sunni satellite TV station. Days before the attack, he announced that armies and tribes would assault the hospital “to take revenge for our brothers. We say this and, by the grace of Allah, we will do it”.
Skilled use of the internet and access to satellite television funded by or based in Sunni states has been central to the resurgence of al-Qa’ida across the Middle East, to a degree that Western politicians have so far failed to grasp. In the last year, Isis has become the most powerful single rebel military force in Iraq and Syria, partly because of its ability to recruit suicide bombers and fanatical fighters through the social media. Western intelligence agencies, such as the NSA in the US, much criticised for spying on the internet communications of their own citizens, have paid much less attention to open and instantly accessible calls for sectarian murder that are in plain view. Critics say that this is in keeping with a tradition since 9/11 of Western governments not wishing to hold Saudi Arabia or the Gulf monarchies responsible for funding extreme Sunni jihadi groups and propagandists supporting them through private donations.
Satellite television, internet, YouTube and Twitter content, frequently emanating from or financed by oil states in the Arabian peninsula, are at the centre of a campaign to spread sectarian hatred to every corner of the Muslim world, including places where Shia are a vulnerable minority, such as Libya, Tunisia, Egypt and Malaysia. In Benghazi, in effect the capital of eastern Libya, a jihadi group uploaded a video of the execution of an Iraqi professor who admitted to being a Shia, saying they had shot him in revenge for the execution of Sunni militants by the Iraqi government.
YouTube-inspired divisions are not confined to the Middle East: in London’s Edgware Road there was a fracas this summer when a Salafi (Sunni fundamentalist) cleric held a rally in the face of objections from local Shia shopkeepers. Impelled by television preachers and the social media, sectarian animosities are deepening among hitherto moderate Sunni and Shia, with one Shia figure in the UK saying that “Even in London you could open the address books of most Sunni without finding any Shia names, and vice versa.”
The hate propaganda is often gory and calls openly for religious war. One anti-Shia satellite television station shows a grouping of Shia clerical leaders, mostly from Iran, Iraq and Lebanon, labelled as “Satan’s assistants”. Another asks “Oh Sunni Muslims, how long will you wait when your sons are led to be hanged in Iraq? Is it now time to break the shackles?” A picture of a woman in black walking between what appear to be two militiamen is entitled “Shia men in Syria rape Sunni sisters”, and another shows the back of a pick-up truck heaped with dead bodies in uniform, titled “The destiny of Syrian Army and Shia soldiers”. Some pictures are intended to intimidate, such as one showing an armed convoy on a road in Yemen, with a message addressed to the Shia saying: “Sunni tribes are on the way”.
Sectarian animosities between Sunni and Shia have existed down the centuries, but have greatly intensified since the Iranian revolution of 1979 and the eight-year Iran-Iraq war that followed it. Hatreds increased after the US invasion of Iraq and the takeover of what had been a Sunni-run state under Saddam Hussein by the majority Shia community, which generated a ferocious sectarian civil war that peaked in 2006-07 and ended with a Shia victory. Opposition to Iran and the new Shia-run state of Iraq led to Sunni rulers emphasising the Shia threat. Shia activists point in particular to the establishment in 2009 of two satellite channels, Safa TV and Wesal TV, which they accuse of having strong anti-Shia bias. They say that Saudi clerics have shown great skill in communicating extreme sectarian views through modern communications technology such as YouTube, Facebook and Twitter, giving them a much wider audience than they had previously enjoyed.
An example of the inflammatory views being pumped out over YouTube is a sermon by Nabil al-Awadi, a cleric in Kuwait, who has 3.4 million followers on Twitter. His speech is devoted to “exposing the biggest conspiracy the Muslim world faces”, which turns out to be a plot “conceived in Qom [the Shia holy city in Iran], and handled by sayyids and chiefs in Tehran, to get rid of the nation of Islam, aiming to desecrate the Kaaba [the building in Mecca that is Islam’s most sacred site] brick by brick”.
Mr Awadi relates that Iraq fell to an enemy whom he does not name, but he clearly means the Shia, often referred to as Safavids after the Iranian dynasty of that name. He says that in Iraq “they were killing the imams with drills in their heads until they are dead and they put the bodies in acid to burn until they died”. But the speaker looks forward to a holy war or jihad in Syria, where a great battle for the future of Islam will be fought and won. He warns that “they did not know that jihad is staying and will put fear in their hearts even if they are in Washington, even if they are in London, even if they are in Moscow”.
In Egypt, the Shia are only a small minority, but a cleric named Mohamed Zoghbi reacted furiously to the suggestion that they appear on satellite television to debate religious differences. “We would cut off their fingers and cut off their tongues,” he said. “I must cut off the Shia breath in Egypt.” Bloodthirsty threats like this have great influence on ordinary viewers, since many Egyptians watch religious channels continuously and believe the opinions expressed on them. An example of what this kind of incitement can mean for Shia living in communities where Sunni are the overwhelming majority was demonstrated in June in the small village of Zawyat Abu Musalam, in Giza governorate in Egypt. Some 40 Shia families had previously lived in the village until an enraged mob, led by Salafist sheikhs, burned five houses and lynched four Shia, including a prominent local figure.
Video films of the lynching, which took place in daylight, show the savage and merciless attacks to which Shia minorities in many countries are now being subjected.
Hazem Barakat, an eyewitness and photojournalist, minutely recorded what happened and recorded it on Twitter in real time. “For three weeks, the Salafist sheikhs in the village have been attacking the Shias and accusing them of being infidels and spreading debauchery,” he told Ahram Online. Film of the incident shows a man, who looks as if he may already be dead, being dragged through a narrow street in the village by a mob. Among the four dead was 66-year-old Hassan Shehata, a well-known Shia leader who had been twice jailed under Hosni Mubarak for “contempt for religion”. Police came to the village but arrived late. “They were just watching the public lynching like everyone else and did not stop anything,” said Mr Barakat.
A significant sign of the mood in Egypt is that immediately after the lynchings, a TV host said that Mr Shehata had been killed because he had insulted the Prophet Mohamed’s relatives. Several Salafist and conservative Facebook pages are cited by Ahram Online as having lauded the murders, saying that this was the beginning of eliminating all the three million Shia in Egypt.
Given that Shia make up between 150 and 200 million of the 1.6 billion Muslims in the world, they are a small and usually vulnerable minority in all countries aside from Iran and Iraq, though they are numerous in Lebanon, Pakistan and India. In Tunisia last year, a pro-Palestinian march by Shia in the city of Gabes was attacked by Salafists chanting, “There is no god but Allah and the Shia are the enemies of God.” Tunisian eyewitnesses cite the influence of Egyptian and Saudi religious channels, combined with the Salafists claiming to be the last defence against an exaggerated threat of a takeover by Iran and the Shia.
The propaganda war became more intense from 2006 on, when there were mass killings of Sunni in Baghdad which, having previously been a mixed city, is now dominated by the Shia, with Sunnis confined to enclaves mostly in the west of the city. The Sunni community in Iraq started a protest movement against persecution and denial of political, social and economic rights in December 2012. As the Iraqi government failed to conciliate the Sunni with concessions, a peaceful protest movement mutated into armed resistance.
The enhanced prestige and popularity of the Shia paramilitary movement Hezbollah, after its success against Israel’s air and ground assault in 2006, may also be a reason why Sunni governments tolerated stepped-up sectarian attacks on the Shia. These often take the form of claims that Iran is seeking to take over the region. In Bahrain, the Sunni monarchy repeatedly asserted that it saw an Iranian hand behind the Arab Spring protests in early 2011, though its own international inquiry later found no evidence for this. When President Obama said in September that Bahrain, along with Iraq and Syria, suffered from sectarian tensions, the Bahraini government furiously denied that any such thing was true.
Social media, satellite television, Facebook and YouTube, which were praised at the start of the Arab Spring as the means for a progressive breakthrough for freedom of expression, have turned into channels for instilling hatred and fear. Fighters in Syria, Iraq, Libya, Yemen and other countries beset by violence often draw their knowledge of the world from a limited number of fanatical internet preachers and commentators calling for holy war by Sunni against Shia; often such people are crucial in sending young volunteers to fight and die in Syria and Iraq.
A recent study of dead rebel fighters in Syria by Aaron Y Zelin of the International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation indicates that jihadi death notices revealing country of origin show that 267 came from Saudi Arabia, 201 from Libya, 182 from Tunisia and 95 from Jordan. The great majority had joined Isis and the al-Nusra Front, both of which are highly sectarian organisations. A deeply dangerous development is that the foreign fighters, inspired by film of atrocities and appeals to religious faith, may sign up to go to Syria but often end up as suicide bombers in Iraq, where violence has increased spectacularly in the past 12 months.
There is now a fast-expanding pool of jihadis willing to fight and die anywhere. The Saudis and the Gulf monarchies may find, as happened in Afghanistan 30 years ago, that, by funding or tolerating the dissemination of Sunni-Shia hate, they have created a sectarian Frankenstein’s monster of religious fanatics beyond their control. “

Mansur al-Hallaj
Mansur al-Hallaj (858-913 AD) – the most controversial of all the Sufi saints – was gruesomely executed at the age of fifty-five for repeatedly proclaiming the heretical words, “I am the truth (Anal-Haq).” Hallaj, meaning ‘the wool-carder’, was married at an early age and traveled widely during his lifetime, journeying as far as India and China in later life.
Once, when he was in Baghdad, Hallaj asked a number of controversial doctrinal questions to the Sufi master, Jonaid. But instead of giving an answer Jonaid said, “There will come a time when you will stain a piece of wood red,” – implying that Hallaj would ultimately be executed. In reply Hallaj said, ” When this happens, you will have to take off your Sufi robe and don the garb of an academic instead.” This prophecy came to fruition when the death warrant for Hallaj was being drawn up and the signature of Jonaid was sought by the religious orthodoxy of Baghdad. Jonaid did not want to sign, but the Caliph of Baghdad insisted he must. Reluctantly Jonaid removed the ‘inner’ attire of his Sufi robes and dressed himself in the ‘outer’ cloak and turban of a religious scholar. He walked to the Islamic academy and signed the death warrant, saying, “We judge Hallaj according to the external truth. As for the internal truth, this God alone knows.”
After Jonaid had refused to answer his polemic questions and made this foreboding prophecy, Hallaj withdrew in disappointment from Jonaid and traveled to the town of Tostar with his wife. Here he lived for a year, honored by the local people, but condemned by the religious orthodoxy because of his criticisms of their spiritual hypocrisy. When they began to plot against him, Hallaj renounced his Sufi robes and donned the garb of a layman. For the next five years he traveled through various regions of Persia and Central Asia in an exalted spiritual state, before returning to the town of Ahvaz near Basra, where he again donned the robes of a Sufi. Both scholars and laymen alike received his writings and discourses at this time with rapturous acclaim, and because of his penetrating insight he was known as ‘Hallaj, the Master of Secrets’. From Basra he made a pilgrimage to Mecca, but here he was denounced as a magician. Returning again to Basra he then set out upon his travels to India, Transoxiana and China, where he was consistently recognized as the enlightened master that he truly was.
On his return to Iraq he made a second pilgrimage to Mecca, where he remained for two years. But a great change had taken place in his spiritual transmissions. His teachings had become extremely esoteric and by proclaiming ‘I am the Truth’ (Anal-Haq), he began to summon people to a ‘truth’ that they couldn’t possibly understand. Many stories now began to circulate about him and the miracles he performed. Opinion was divided against him and it is said that he was driven out of fifty Islamic cities for his heretical proclamations of ‘I am the Truth’. Finally the drift of public opinion deemed that he ought to be sentenced to death.
Four thousand people were said to have accompanied Hallaj on his second pilgrimage to Mecca. For a whole year he stood barefooted and bareheaded before the Ka’ba, where every day a man would place some bread and a jug of water before him. But it was seldom that Hallaj partook of bread or water. With his body reduced to skin and bones he would publicly proclaim, “O Lord. You are the guide of all those who pass through the valley of bewilderment. If I am a heretic, then please increase my heresy.” But at night when he was alone he would pray, “O lord. I know and worship none besides you. I am so grateful for the gifts that you have bestowed upon me, and my tongue cannot express my gratitude for them. So please thank yourself on my behalf.”
For twenty years Hallaj wore the same tattered Sufi robe. Then one day some well-meaning followers decided to forcibly disrobe him so that they could clothe him in a new garment. But when they removed his old robe they discovered that a large scorpion had made its nest there. Hallaj told them that this scorpion was a ‘friend’ that had lived inside his robe for the last twenty years, and he insisted that they replaced both his old robe and the unharmed scorpion immediately.
From Mecca he returned to Baghdad, and it was at this time that a group of orthodox theologians petitioned the Caliph of Baghdad with a charge of heresy against Hallaj. He was cast into prison. It is said that on the first night of his imprisonment the jailers found his cell empty, and on the second night they could find neither Hallaj nor his cell, but on the third night they found him locked in his cell again. “What magic is this?” the jailers asked. “On the first night I was in the presence of the Lord, so you could not find me,” replied Hallaj. “On the second night the Lord was present here, so you could find neither me nor the cell. And on this third night I have been brought back to fulfill the scripture, which states that a man in his senses should not proclaim ‘I am the Truth’. For as long as he is a man he can never be God. If he utters ‘I am the Truth’ it is heresy. Now you must do your work.”
Hallaj was held in prison for a year. For the first half of this year a steady stream of visitors came to consult with him, but when the Caliph heard of this he decreed that Hallaj should have no visitors whatsoever. During this time a compassionate Sufi named Ibn ‘Ata once sent a message to Hallaj, asking him to repent of the heretical words that he had spoken, so that he may be pardoned by the Caliph. Hallaj’s reply was: “Let him who sent this message petition for pardon instead.” When Ibn ‘Ata heard this answer he burst into tears and cried: “We, who believe we are true servants of the Lord, are not even worthy of one splinter of the light that He casts upon Hallaj.”
Three hundred prisoners were held in the same prison as Hallaj, and one night he asked them if they wanted to be released. When they all replied that they did, he made a mystical gesture with his fingers that caused all the chains and locks to burst asunder. Making a second gesture, cracks began to appear in the walls and the prison gates were thrown wide open. As the prisoners were running away they asked why Hallaj still remained in his cell and would not come with them. To which he replied, “I have a secret matter with the Lord, which can only be revealed upon the scaffold. I am a prisoner of my Master, the Lord.”
When the Caliph was informed of this incident, he furiously proclaimed, “Hallaj will cause an insurrection next. The time has come for his death. Make public the punitive announcement for his execution. Begin by flogging him severely.”
Three hundred lashes with a staff were inflicted on Hallaj’s body, and at every blow a voice was heard to clearly say, “O Mansur al-Hallaj, fear not, bear the punishment.” His executioners then draped thirteen heavy iron chains around his body and he was made to walk to the scaffold, like Christ bearing his cross along the Via Dolorosa. A hundred thousand citizens of Baghdad were said to have assembled to watch the execution. Hallaj walked proudly to the scaffold, his gaze passing over the crowd as he repeated, “Haq, Haq, Anal-Haq” – “Truth, Truth, I am the Truth.”
Upon reaching the steps of the scaffold, he kissed the wood and looked up with a smile. When questioned about his apparent joy, he replied: “This is a happy time, for I am returning Home. My Friend is not iniquitous. He gave me the best wine to drink, just like the Lord offers to his honored guests. I drank my fill. Then he called forth the sword to punish me for being drunk in the month of prohibition.” Hallaj’s son then cried out in anguish for his father’s last instructions. “The whole world believes that ethical behavior leads to God’s Truth,” began Hallaj: “But seek instead God’s Divine Grace. Even if you gain but a single particle of it, it is more precious that all of the virtuous deeds of angels and men.”
Hallaj ascended the steps and turning towards Mecca he raised his hands in prayer, saying: “What God knows, no man knows. You have bestowed upon me what I sought.”
The Sufi teacher Shebli then stepped forward and asked, “Hallaj, what is Sufism?”
Hallaj answered: “The lowest level of Sufism is what you are witnessing today.”
“Then what is the highest level?” asked Shebli.
“It is beyond your comprehension,” answered Hallaj.
The Caliph next gave the order for the assembled crowd to stone Hallaj, who endured the onslaught of rocks in heroic silence. The Caliph then commanded Shebli to cast a stone also. But Shebli, not wishing to himself harm the condemned saint, chose to throw a flower attached to a clod of earth instead. Hallaj cried out in pain when the clod hit him, and when asked to explain the reason, he replied: “Those who have cast stones know not what they are doing. But he who cast that clod is aware of everything he does.”
Hallaj’s hands and feet were then tied to the stake, and with a single stroke of his sword the executioner severed Hallaj’s hands. As the blood spurted out from his wrists it was seen to form the words ‘I am the Truth’ (Anal-Haq) as it poured onto the wooden boards of the scaffold. Hallaj looked up and said, “It is an easy thing to cut off the hands of a bound man. But a true man is he who cuts off the hands of those who try to tear down the attributes of God’s crown.”
Then the executioner cut off his feet. Hallaj raised his eyes to heaven and said, “With these feet I walked upon an earthly journey. But other feet I have, which even now are making the journey between the two worlds.” Hallaj then rubbed the bloody stumps of his wrists over his arms, shoulders and face, saying: “This I do because much blood has already flowed from my body, and I do not want you to think that I have grown pale from fear. Today I am happy, because I am adorned in the heroic blood of a martyr. The ablution of Love is only perfect when it is made with blood.”
The executioners then plucked out Hallaj’s eyes and cast them upon the ground. Then they severed his ears and nose. A great uproar arose from the crowd. Some cast stones and words of derision, others wept with prayers of pity. An executioner then sought to pull Hallaj’s tongue from his mouth, but Hallaj drew back and said: “O God. Permit me one final word. I am so grateful that you have kept me steadfast and true. I wish that you would bestow this grace upon my persecutors also.” Upon hearing these words the crowd unleashed a hail of stones and angry cries. Hallaj’s last words were, “The Love of the One separates you from all others.” Then his tongue was pulled out and severed at its root.
Hallaj’s tormented body was left to bleed as he merged slowly into death. At the time of evening prayer the executioner cut his head off with a single blow, releasing his soul unto Almighty God. As the blood pumped forth from his trunk it uttered the cry ‘I am the Truth’ (Anal-Haq). Then suddenly every dismembered part of his body began to take up the cry, ‘I am the Truth’. Throughout that night his trunk, limbs and sensory organs kept up the constant repetition of Anal-Haq. It was then that his accusers began to realize that they had slain a true Beloved of God.
On the following morning it was seen that every stream of blood that had pulsed from Hallaj’s veins had inscribed the word ‘Allah’ on the boards of the scaffold. The Caliph ordered that Hallaj’s dismembered body parts, which still repeated Anal-Haq, should be collected and burned immediately; for he feared that the growing consternation of his citizens could soon develop into a public outcry against him. The flames of the funeral pyre roared with the sound of Anal-Haq, and every crackling spark that emanated from the pyre inscribed the words Anal-Haq against the dense smoke. When the fire had died down Hallaj’s ashes continued to sound the refrain, ‘I am the Truth’, and when they were cast upon the waters of the River Diyala they spread into the calligraphic letters of Anal-Haq.
Then the waters of the River Diyala and the River Tigris began to swell and foam as their levels rose, threatening to engulf Baghdad. But Hallaj had foreseen that this event would come to pass when his ashes were to be cast into the river, and he had left instructions with his servant that his robe should be spread upon the river’s surface. And when this servant spread Hallaj’s robe upon the turbulent water, the river’s wrath was placated. His ashes now became silent and floated towards the riverbank, where they were collected by the faithful and entombed with honor.
On the day of Hallaj’s execution a Sufi saint spent the night in prayer under the scaffold. In the deep of the night he heard the Divine Voice declare: “I entrusted Hallaj with one of my secrets, but he revealed it to others. I am punishing him for revealing this secret.” Another Sufi saint, Abbas Tusi, declared: “On the Day of Judgement Mansur al-Hallaj shall be brought forth in fetters, since in his divine ecstasy he may turn the whole world upside down.”
Another dervish was said to have stopped Hallaj on his way to the scaffold with the question: “Tell me Hallaj, before you die. What is Love?” Hallaj replied, “You will know what Love is from witnessing the events of today, tomorrow and the next day.” On that day he was executed; on the next day his mutilated corpse was burned to ashes; and on the third day his ashes were dispersed upon the winds and waters. Thus did Hallaj reveal the true meaning of his unconditional, selfless and divine love.

Those who follow the true Message of Islam are known as MUSLIMS. Wahabi, Sufi, Shia and some others are misnomers. In the Islamic history Wahabi, Sufi, Shia and some others were mere Schools of Thought. All these Schools of Thought had only a perspective or an interpretation according to their understanding. Long after the Death of these Scholars; the followers created their own version with their political masters. Some of these groups have strayed away completely from the Core Values of Islam. While some others who identify themselves by any other than Muslim, will be representing these political entities and their leaders interest to control wealth and power. Some of these leaders will tie up with the Devil. Muslims have a specific purpose in Life on earth. Most of them know it and pursue to the best of their ability. The term for those Muslim who deviate are KNOWN as THE KHAWARIJS.
The basic message of Islam is the same message of all the previous prophets (peace be upon all of them) worship God alone and avoid worshipping anything besides Him, whether it is a person, place or thing, directly or indirectly. This basic principle of Monotheism is contained in the opening chapter of the Quran, known as Surah al-Fathiha, verse 4: “You alone we worship and from you alone we do seek help.” In (4:37), Allah also said: “Worship Allah and do not associate partners with Him.” The last Prophet (PBUH) is reported to have said: Anyone who says: ‘There is no god worthy of worship except Allah’ and dies holding that belief sincerely will be eventually granted paradise.
Muhammed Ibn Abdul Wahhab made every effort to purify Islam by returning Muslims to the original principles of Islam, as exemplified by the Salaf (Companions of the Prophet (PBUH) First and Second Generation in Arabia) and rejecting what was regarded as corruptions introduced by Bid’ah (Innovation of new practices) and Shirk (Attributing Partners). Although all Muslims pray to one God, Muhammed Ibn Abdul Wahhab was keen on emphasising that no intercession with God was possible without God’s permission, which God only grants to whom He wills and only to benefit those whom He wills, certainly not the ones who invoke anything or anyone except Him, as these would never be forgiven.
And lo! this your religion is one religion and I am your Lord, so keep your duty unto Me. (The Noble Quran 22:52) But they (mankind) have broken their religion among them into sects, each sect rejoicing in its tenets. (The Noble Quran 22:53) So leave them in their error till a time. I can see what it says in their book of hate. It says that if you see a stranger who is not a Muslim, either convert him or kill him. You want me to quote the sutra, I’ll quote the sutra. Page after page after page is about…a religion that teaches convert or kill, a religion that says oppress women, kill homosexuals, kill the Jew, kill the Christian, kill the infidel, page after page after page and we’re supposed to sit here and listen to this rubbish about a religion of peace .
