Supremacists, Minorities, & Presidential Race

By Ameer Ali

Dr. Ameer Ali

The forthcoming presidential election is in many ways going to be an acid test for the two ethnic minorities, Tamils and Muslims, whose recent living experience had been nothing but traumatic. Given the communal make up of Sri Lanka’s majoritarian democracy never will there be an opportunity in our lifetime for a Tamil or Muslim to become the president of Sri Lanka. Having placed Buddhism as state religion it will be extremely difficult even for a Sinhalese Christian to compete for that position.  It was reported a few days ago that some Muslims in the Eastern Province are contemplating to promote a Muslim parliamentarian to enter the race. It should be considered either as a joke or part of another but sinister hidden agenda. The country is not ready yet to accept a non-Buddhist to become its president. In all probability, the next contest is going to be among three Buddhists of whom the names of two are already known and the third is yet to be announced.

In any case, the contest is an unavoidable luxury that the nation can ill afford at a time when the country’s economy is burdened with escalating debt and falling revenue. Its economic growth is abysmal and the living standard of ordinary citizens is crumbling by the day with ever rising cost of living and scarcities. After the Easter infamy foreign investment has dwindled and so are tourist arrivals. With a looming global economic slowdown in wake of the ongoing Sino-American trade war and Brexit crisis the prognosis for Sri Lanka’s economic revival does not look promising. There are also other equally serious problems the country is confronting, such as an inefficient and corrupt public service, an outdated legal system, substandard educational and health deliveries, and a rapidly degrading environment. On top of all this is pressure from regional and international super powers to compromise with the country’s sovereignty by allowing them to fight their strategic wars from inside the island’s maritime shores and territorial waters.

Tackling these issues is not easy and requires a comprehensive and even radical package of programs, which is sadly lacking in the manifestos of UNP, SLFP and SLPP that are in the race for presidency. Only the JVP candidate had at least referred to the need for a new economic direction in his inaugural address. I have already argued that JVP deserves a chance, because it promises a credible third alternative to the hackneyed ethno-nationalist and neoliberal paradigm of the UNP-SLFP-SLPP cohort. There is nothing original and different in their economic strategies, because they are bound by constraints imposed by the international managers of neo-liberal economies. Other ethnic parties like TNA, SLMC, ACMC and HU never had any economic policy and not even worth considering when it comes to tackling national issues.

To make things worse the only issue that is going to dominate the political campaign of the three contending parties, UNP, SLFP and SLPP, is Buddhism and its supremacy in this country. This populist agenda is aggressively pushed by a univocal coalition of Buddhist supremacists led by members of the Sangha, supported by sections of the media and vested interests from the petty bourgeoisie. These supremacists are relatively a new element that came to the fore after 2009. There may be even foreign forces backing this group with their own separate agendas. It is sad that, with one or two exceptions, none of the political leaders, including the President, has so far come out openly to explain to the gullible masses the dangers inherent in the supremacist campaign. The silence of these leaders is obviously political and opportunistic given their desire not to jeopardise the vote bank of supremacists. In the meantime, the aggressive and intolerant campaign of this malevolent desperados, is damaging not only peace and harmony but also the much needed economic recovery.

There is no running away from the fact that it was more than half a century of communal politics that brought this country to this perilous situation. It started with language and now shifting towards religion, and particularly towards Islam and Muslims. Buddhist zealots are all out to remove Islam and its followers from the cultural and economic landscape of this country. In this sense, there is an ideological congruency between the demand for Buddhist supremacy in Sri Lanka and that for Islamic supremacy as being advocated by Islamists such as the ISIS. Both are intolerant and violent in nature and both are misfits for plural societies. They pour the same wine from different bottles. In this sense, even the Easter carnage should be seen as the violent response by local Islamists to counter the zealotry of Buddhist supremacists.

True, Muslims have to reform themselves, as I have repeatedly argued, to recover their lost heritage of the age old harmony between Buddhism and Islam in this country. But, this reformation is an internal matter and should be left to the community and its leaders. Instead, what is happening now is that an existential threat posed by the supremacists is making internal reforms impossible. Because of this it has forced the government to push through some band aid solutions to issues like gender balancing in the operation of the MMDA, changing the Muslim attire and controlling madrasas. This hasty interference just before going to the polls is a politically motivated exercise, and more to appease the demands of supremacists than to demonstrate genuine concern in resolving the irksome issues that are destabilising the Muslim community.

The supremacists also realise the decisive role played by minority votes in previous elections. It was minority votes that defeated the pro-supremacist Rajapakse regime in 2015. To prevent this from happening again there is a long term plan to repopulate traditional Tamil majority electorates in the north and east with Sinhalese Buddhists. Mushrooming Buddha statues in Tamil areas and converting Hindu temples into Buddhist temples, based on dubious archaeological evidence, is also part of this sinister program. In the short term however, they are bent in creating a rift between Tamils and Muslims in the east so that minority votes in the forthcoming election could split and enable a pro-supremacist candidate to win.

Apart from these campaign tactics, populist Buddhism in the hands of supremacists is creating another and far more serious danger to the security of this country. By claiming that Sri Lanka is a home that belongs solely to Sinhalese Buddhists and that the minorities are only the tenants, as proclaimed by Ven. Gnanasara in Kandy in June, the supremacists have made those minorities virtually stateless.  In that case why should the minorities remain patriotic? Why should a tenant worry about protecting the house which he or she does not own? The supremacists are deliberately encouraging the minorities to act as fifth column at a time when foreign powers are vying for permanent foothold in this country. No wonder security has become another issue in the presidential election.

It is in this politically volatile atmosphere that the entry of JVP receives extra significance, particularly from the point of view of minorities. To reminisce a little, I was a young man in early twenties when I marched with hundreds of thousands of others in 1963, along Maradana road towards the Galle Face Green, to listen to the May Day messages from leaders like NM, Peter, Philip, Colvin, Bala and others of an earlier generation of progressives. They were the only group at that time who promised equality of status too all Sri Lankans irrespective of their cast or creed. Unfortunately, with their brilliant minds, committed patriotism and principled policies they could not capture government on their own because their strength was disproportionately fixed in the urban areas with little weightage amongst the rural peasantry. A few of those leaders later joined SLFP and tried to change the economic direction of the country. But, reactionary elements within the SLFP proved a stumbling block to the socialists and the coalition was defeated at the elections in 1977. However, it is a strange irony in Sri Lanka’s history that it was that coalition’s socialist minister, historian, rationalist and lawyer, Dr. Colvin R. De Silva who ennobled Buddhism as the state religion in the constitution he authored.

Today, JVP is the only political party in the country that has a socialist leaning and non-communal. Unlike the previous leftists JVP started its movement from the rural base. Although it has built up a respectable urban constituency it should go back to its rural roots to give itself a reasonable chance to make an impact in the current race. It is true that JVP has blood on its hands. But, which of the other parties doesn’t? The present generation of JVP leadership should not be held responsible for mistakes committed by their predecessors. Almost half a century has elapsed since the initial JVP insurrection occurred in 1971. Many of its present leaders were not even born at that time, and when the second insurrection was staged in 1987 they were in their teens, more romantic and immature. How can one reasonably hold these men and women responsible for their predecessors’ crimes? The present context is different and JVP’s ideology is also mellowed to accommodate changed circumstances. Most importantly, they are thinking in terms of the nation and its people as a whole rather than in terms of sections or communities. Their candidacy for presidency therefore deserves serious consideration.

The two minorities, Tamils and Muslims, who let down the progressive forces in the past must now realise that their communities have no future under regimes that are impregnated with religious populism and ethnic chauvinism. JVP should take its message to the Tamil and Muslim electorates and convince the new generation of voters of the futility in following their reactionary leaders. Of the two communities Muslims have the worse leadership. These leaders have unashamedly sacrificed the collective interest of the community to enhance their own individual interests.

To restructure the economy, to transform the public service, judiciary, education and health, to stop environmental dereliction and above all, to allow peace and harmony prevail nationwide, the country needs a clear break from its recent past. Such a break cannot be without pain at the start but its long term benefits will outweigh short term difficulties. That break cannot come from the old guards who are policy bankrupt and schooled in ethno-nationalism and religious fundamentalism. It is a tough ask for the JVP. However, given the choice available that party deserves a chance. Is the country ready for a third alternative?

Once again a brilliant piece of writing.
You have written this describing a true politics of Sri Lanka and islamophobia attack on Muslims in SL..

It is sad politics got wrong in SL..Sinhalese are not good in two things.
They do not know how to do business and they do not kow how to do politics..
Otherwise we will.be like Singapore now .
    They are honest people..
    But BBS made them bad.
Now; politics is mixed up.with all racial and religious discrimination.
So; I do not know where it will go.
Some stupid clerics of Muslim community do not know how to live in SL as a second minority communities.
People in both sides are good ..
But politicians; monks and clerics are trouble makers.
    Not all but some..
We all.want to see a prosperous SL..
But all what see is different trend
God save Sri Lanka for. Evil eyes of both internal and outside enemies

“an inefficient and corrupt public service”

Dr Ameer Ali, please talk about anything except someone’s birthrights. Don’t you know that few rich Arab countries offer telephone, electricity services free, and govt cash up front for new born babies? It is like that and why can’t SL do it too? Only difference is they have oil money & we have tax money.

Are u nuts ? Ranil is nicely destroying it since 1994. Ranil is a born loser. He is still serviving as pm due to 19th ammendment otherwise he would have already lost power again. He does not have any vision or political knowledge.

      Dr. Ameer Ali,

      Thanks for your excellent essay.

The Para-Sinhala Par-“Buddhists” populace was and is so thoroughly brainwashed by the Para-Monks, that they will not accept a non-Sinhala “Buddhist” to be the President even Prime Minister, as they expect by tradition that the President prostrate to these imbecile monks, do that the monks can maintain their hegemony and importance. This is is the constitution.

The measured mean IQ of Sri Lanka is 79, whereas the estimated mean IQ of the Para-Sinhala “Buddhists “ is 78.

Stupidity and racism is a virtue for Para-Sinhala Para-“Buddhists”. The monks help maintain that. The politicians prostrate to these monks. A Christian, a Hindu, a Muslim or an Atheist will not prostrate to these imbecile monks. Only the Para-Sinhala “Buddhists “ will do that.

All these factors help in maintaining what you say in your excellent essay.

Now , not to be outdone, the Eastern Province Muslims are stupid , mean IQ below 79, or decreased by the Wahhabies. That is why The Wahhabis went there first and the Wahhabi Tauheed Jamats Terrorists originated.

There are ‘Assassins’ who assassinate people. There are some people who do ‘Character Assassination’. There are a new group of assassins whose job is ‘Culture Assassination’. These ‘Assassins’ are hired by NGOs thriving on $$$$ to kill rich cultures by spreading wrong information and humiliating those cultures. This guy who keep on repeating the Mantra ‘Para Sinhala’ which is not true and humiliate Sinhala Buddhists and Monks is such a person.
Unless this guy keep on doing the assigned job he will not get his pay check. Let the poor guy make his living by assassinating 2500 year old Sinhala Buddhist culture and heritage.

          Eagle Eye Simplico,

Truth hurts the imbeciles as It shatters their brainwashed Worldview. Ask Galileo about Simplicos he discusses in the Dialogue .

Para-Sinhala Para-“Buddhism”, is a distortion and corruption of pristine Buddhism and an insult to the Buddha, just the same way Wahhabism-Salafism, is a distortion of Islam, and both these distortions have raised their ugly heads, because their followers are Simplicos, mean IQ 79, and have fallen prey to the Monks, Ulama and the corrupt politicians, who use them as fodder.

Wonder why there are hardly any Tamil Buddhists in the Land of Native Veddah Aethho.

“Wonder why there are hardly any Tamil Buddhists in the Land of Native Veddah Aethho.”
Buddha has told his teachings are meant for wise people. IQ of Demalu may be very low that they could not comprehend even basic things in Buddha’s teachings.

Amanasiri’s IQ may be very low because he is a descendant of a Demala slave brought from Malabar. As such he has failed to grasp the scientific discourse of Prof. Raj Somadeva who has proved with scientific evidences that Sinhalayo evolved in this country from Homo Sapiens who lived 125,000 years ago.

              Eagle Eye,

No need for ad hominem attacks, stick to the arguments with supporting data. Amarasiri is after the truth, just like Copernicus, Galileo, Kepler, Newton, Darwin and many others did.

Simplicos have a hard time understanding and comprehending data, whether modern or ancient, especially when the data is in conflict with their brainwashed worldview.

This was the case with the Catholic Church on the Heliocentric model of the planetary system..

Eagle Eye and Prof Raj Somadeva are Simplicos, among the many thousands, millions, who cannot comprehend observations, data and properly interpret. Such Simplicos were there during Galileo’s time too. They certainly are NOT confined to Para-Sinhala Para-“Buddhists”, Para-Wahhabies, Wahhabies, Salafies and many other cults, can also be found among the general population.

It is the Para-Sinhala Para-“Buddhists”, who are character assassinating pristine Buddhism by distorting and corrupting Buddhism, and they are and insult to the Buddha, just the same way the Wahhabi-Salafies and their clones such as ISIS etc. are distorting Islam and insulting prophet Mohamed. Those imbeciles as well including many Ulama, are Simplicos as well.

A Land like no other, where there are many, many Para-Simplicos..

Gone are the days we fought a war against own folks. But today, ballige putha Rajaakshe groups stand against own cultured people in this country just misleading the masses of Eagle Eye nature, so called sinhala buddhists. In the real day life, these men are nothing for Rajaakshes, that always abuse anyone even their deceased parents for their political survival.
As for me, if Rajaapkshes would have been destroyed on that easter day, where we lost ultra innocient people of ranging to 260 or more, things would have worked for the betterment of this country. The prevailing law and authority would have no guts to corner the ballige putha Rajapakshes. that is why they spread just lie blatant lies for their political comeback. Sinhalaya should question ,why only Rajalshes are this much power greedy if they have been clean and nothing to worry about their on going court cases ?????

Social activist-feminist, Ngurang Reena has been fighting against racism and discrimination faced by the minorities in India, mostly towards the people of the North-Eastern region.

“People aren’t born with racist ideas or attitudes,” says Reena, onstage at TEDxXIE 2019. “Racism is something that is learned or acquired.” In her eye-opening talk, Reena reveals the unspoken evidence of how racism has been killing youths across India- and offers resolutions on how it can be dealt with.
Ngurang Reena is a former Assistant Professor of Miranda House, Delhi University

Yes, JVP certainly looks like a third force now, but AKD seems to be also playing constitutional games just like Ranil and Rajapassa.
World Bank recently classified Sri Lanka as an Upper-Middle Income country (MIC) based on questionable GNI data/
This is promotion to Upper MIC is contrary to empirical data as following the Easter Sunday Economic Terrorism attacks the country suffered significant economic losses. economic growth forecasts were significantly reduced, jobs lost and people pushed into POVERTY etc.
However, JVP has not questioned this economic fiction that SL is now an Upper Middle Income County put out by Washington consensus.
This sudden promotion of Sri Lanka to an UPPER Middle Income Country (MIC ) is clearly to force and fast track signing the MCC compact without time for discussion and debate, because upper MIC status means Lanka is not eligible for MCC Aid.. Which MCC can shove off with!
Of course this fake upper MIC status, with poverty line of less than LKD 200 per capita per day is total fiction by WB also to boost Ranil Wickramasinghe’s election campaign..
The mystery is that no Economist or Poverty think tank or JVP has challenged this World Bank reclassification of Sri Lanka as an UMIC in the wake of Easter attacks!

Really, all the Presidents of Singapore have been old hacks of the PAP and loyal servants of the Lee Kuan Yew establishment. The few Presidents who tried to be independent were shunted aside quite quickly. It is a model for Sri Lanka only to the extent that it would be best to have a ceremonial President. The President is elected in Singapore and still remains only with ceremonial powers though with some control over the reserve funds.
The more emblematic factor is that the Cabinet is multiethnic ensuring that all the different races are represented. Very powerful ministries currently Finance, Law and Foreign Affairs are held by Indians. This sort of thing will hardly ever happen in Sri Lanka. It does not have anything to do with the Constitution.

When sinhala buddists talk about buddism, they get classified as extremists but when real extremist talk about islam or hindunism, it is considered multi ethnic freedoom..

    Mr. Ameer Ali
Muslims took themselves out of the Sri Lankan ‘cultural landscape’ about twenty years ago ,when they very clearly demonstrated to the rest of the population that they were different to them by acquiring a totally foreign dress code .You have only yourselves to blame .

    • 1
      7

Excuse me, but can you elaborate what can be classified as the authentic dress code of a typical Sri Lankan male and female citizen? Does it befit your idea of ‘cultural landscape’ as defined in our country’s Constitution? Even the shirt and trouser that you wear is borrowed from the West. The blouse and sarree that women wear has been borrowed from India. What is remaining is only the ‘amude’ worn by veddhas. Everything else is foreign and borrowed.

The Muslim dress code is a decent dress code which gives and get respect to those who wear it as being from among the pious and god fearing. It actually prevents them from openly committing sin, for fear of bringing shame and disgrace to their community and family through their dress identity, and also the fear of the wrath of God. But as usual, what is good and noble for some, is construed as bad and divisive for others. It is common knowledge that as a rule, Muslims don’t consume alcoholic drinks, don’t gamble, don’t womanize, don’t give or take money on interest, don’t eat haram food, don’t abort unplanned pregnancies considering it to be a sin. As such, for all of these noble practices, they are considered a threat, as being bad and a danger in the eyes of all those who live their lives in opposing ways .Unfortunately, this has become the norm and the way of the world, and so it has become a struggle for Muslims to maintain their faith, but will have to continue to live with it. The rewards will be far greater.

‘Muslims don’t consume alcoholic drinks, don’t gamble, don’t womanize, don’t give or take money on interest, don’t eat haram food, don’t abort unplanned pregnancies considering it to be a sin. ‘

Meet any Muslim in the West and see how they live. As just one example did you know that in Rotherham, Sheffield, Manchester and other cities in the UK Muslims groomed and abused hundreds of children? The abusers targeted vulnerable children, offering them sweets, alcohol, drugs and takeaway food in exchange for sex. Every single child was English. This is the tip of the iceberg. The families of Sikh, Hindu and other children were too ashamed to come forward.

So don’t post all this crap about how wonderful Muslims are. We all know how they are supposed to be, and how they actually are. No different from anyone else.

‘The Muslim dress code is a decent dress code which gives and get respect to those who wear it’

What a load of rubbish. How are women treated all over the Middle East? I recall a Muslim woman screaming and pleading with Western reporters to help her, because she was being arrested by the Police for demonstrating for freedom, and she knew she would be raped.

The black Arabic dress is alien to Sri Lanka and should be completely banned.

In past muslims were never wearing those terrorist like hijabs etc.. it was introduced by radicalised muslims who returned back to sl from saudi jobs.
Started mosques all over the countrt destroying peaceful environment, started muslim only banking stuff, started pure muslim international schools, forced supermarkets and popular food chains to remove pork, forced halal on everthing and destroyed local businesses.
You only moved out of the common pack to create a unique identity. It created instability among sinhala buddists and lead to unnecessary problems.
Please either adapt to the common things in the country or pack your bags n go to middleeast. You guys r a headache to every nation..

Muslims may not have minor vices, but they have major ones like theft, dishonesty, rape and murder, especially against non-Muslims. In Sri Lanka the biggest drug peddlers, contraband dealers, money launderers and bribe givers are Muslims. The worst racism in Sri Lanka is the claim of ownership of eastern province when they went there as refugees 400 years ago.

        Marwan,

The authentic dress code should be dictated by the environment in which one lives in.

In the tropics, it could be lighter, and in the colder climates such as the Eskimos, will have to be heavily clad.
Then you have the cultural environment and the tribal environment.
To protect the women from prying eyes and being abducted, cover them up.
Then there is the religious environment, that is mixed with the cultural environment , imposed traditions based on their interpretations., and the need for tribal or group identity vs. national identity.

Then there are the Ulama, Simplico Ulama who interrelated to claim that the women who wore the saree went to Hell . They also claim that, based on their leadings from the Quran, Hadith and their interpretations that the Earth is spread out like a carpet, the Dun goes around the Earth and sets in muddy waters, Man came from Adam and Eve and not by Evolution from primate ancestors etc.

A different dress code is also chosen by the Sinhalese women as well so were they isolated and called cultural outcasts. Don’t blame it on a dress. However I agree with you a 100% the Muslims started drawing lines between themselves and the OTHER which was the main reason for all their problems

‘In this sense, even the Easter carnage should be seen as the violent response by local Islamists to counter the zealotry of Buddhist supremacists’

How can you lie like this when you know that there have been decades of expansion of Islamic mosques, madrassas and schools? Violent Buddhist organisations like the BBS are the result of this.

When writing about Buddha statues in Hindu areas, how come you completely ignore the Christian evangelists in every Hindu and Buddhist village? Please tell the whole truth.

While the JVP position is sober re majoritarianism, one has to be a little cautious about unqualified enthusiasm.
    *
In 1971the JVP rejected the working class and anti-trade-union, it was hostile to Hill Country Tamils and proposed closing down the estates and even repatriation of ‘Indian expansionists’ meaning tamil plantation workers. (That was team captain Wijeweera’s immaturity + opportunism then; and theJVP got over it by 1980). The Uprising itself was not communal but confused.
    *
In 1987-1990 the JVP adopted a rather chauvinistic line that persisted right up to 2005 and a little beyond. Ther objection to the Indo–Sri Lanka accord took a heavy told on many leftists, including Vijaya Kumaranatunga; even Vickramabahu was a target, but survived with serious injury. TheJVP opposed the tsunami Relief deal proposed by Chandrika K. It collaborated with JHU to de-merge N&E; and remained anti-devolution.
So there is much explaining to do to be not just the ‘best of a bad lot’ for minorities.

      SJ
JVP of 1970s and 1980s was operating in the Cold War environment, which determined their strategies. In the post Cold War globally integrated world JVP’s strategies have to change. Even LTTE lost partly because their tactics became outdated in the new world.

        Ali,
I’m glad to see you admitting the fact that JVP has only changed the tactics but has not given up false Marxism!

SJ is correct. JVP is continuing their resistance to foreign investments in the guise of nationalism & environment protection.

    • 3
      0

I am afraid that Dr AA is making feeble excuses for JVP’s wrong line.
      *
The Cold War is an irrelevancy, because the JVP was not aligned to any ‘Cold Warrior’ for the CW to enter JVP’s political sums.
While 1971 was a time when the USSR had an eye to influence in Sri Lanka, there was no US-USSR rivalry in this little island ruled by JRJ since 1977. Soviet interest, in fact, began to fade from 1976. (There was, however, Indo-US rivalry that lasted pretty long. I hope that the writer is not claiming that the JVP was batting for the US.)
      *
My point was about the chauvinism deeply ingrained in the JVP, which found open expression, until much after the war was over. The JVP has not yet discarded its anti-devolution stand.
      *
There was US proxy war in Afghanistan up to Feb 1989. India sided with the USSR. What was the possible JVP strategy in opposing the Indo-Sri Lanka accord?
In December 1989 the US & USSR declared that the Cold War war over. There was considerable thawing for months before that.
      *
The US was the sole global hegemon when the JVP acted to de-merge N&E and sabotage PTOMS.
      *
My point is that, cold war or not, the JVP did not change its stripes– as long as the old chauvinist stripes paid to collect votes.
In 2009, Mahinda stole the thunder of not just JVP’s chauvinism, but also JHU’s.
      *
Does not the writer think that the JVP has more than a case to answer?

      • 1
        1

        SJ
I am not arguing that JVP is all perfect. They started with chauvinism mixed with Marxism. It was that Marxist colour that makes Cold War situation relevant to my analysis of JVP’s growth. The fact that they haver given up armed struggle as a strategy for liberation, shows the irrelevance of it in 21st century. On chauvinism yes, JVP has a case to answer. Bur isn’t that a common variable among all parties? If the minorities keep on rejecting JVP as they rejected LSSP and CP in the past, JVP also, like the leftists of yore, will be forced to form coalition with reactionaries as happened between 1970 and 1977. This is why I argue for a chance to JVP.
        AA

        • 0
          0

          AA
It is not perfection but credibility that bothers me.
Thanks for conceding on the points on JVP’s chauvinism.
          *
The minorities endorsed the Old Left until the LSSP joined the SLFP. (The North elected a CP MP in 1956.) It was a force that mattered in Northern politics until mid-1970s.
          *
The CP had many Muslims and Tamils in key positions even the 1970s. Karalasingam was a top LSSP theoretician.
Partnership in the UF, the constitution drafted by Colvin, standardization etc. and yielding to SLFP communalism ruined the Left’s electoral fortunes among Tamils.
The Muslim electorate was weak under FPP elections. Their national question was barely addressed by the leadership. Things changed after 1977, but weak attitudes persisted.
The Left’s rebel factions did not compromise with chauvinism. Even the parliamentary left (except those led by Philip G) never adopted a communal policy of the kind that the JVP had.
          *
The JVP did not need reasons to link hands with the JHU in 2005 to demerge the N&E. Its cynical undermining of PTOMS needs explaining.
The JVP has all along been anti-devolution unlike any Left; and does not recognize a national question.
The JVP was never Marxist but for the red caps and hammer and sickle logo. The JVP’s famous five lessons speak volumes of its ‘Marxist character’. The change of heart after Bala Tampoe appeared for the leaders in insurrection cases persuaded BT to arrange admission of JVP to his 4th International. But the change did not last. The proverbial cat princess chased after the mouse on the wedding night (Presidential Election, 1982). The 4th International expelled the JVP much later for its chauvinism.
Let us not get sentimental in political matters.
Let the JVP state its position on key issues before we prescribe anything.

What more danger than what happened?
    Under Ranil/ Sirisena circus

Killing innocent people in their hundreds in their holy day?

People will decide you don’t under estimate the Sri Lankan Public.

The main reason for this problem is because Sinhala Leaders like RW and MS mollycoddled the Muslims for their political existence.

Unless a stern authoritarian ruler takes the rains of the country the country will go to the dogs.

there will be no protected areas like wilpaththu , Muslim enclaves will spring everywhere without any regulation.

Unless there is tight control it is not possible to free the country from nefarious unpatriotic elements hell bent on destroying the country.

It is a good idea that the minorities should support the JVP. The new JVP has shed the excesses of the old JVP and has emerged as a truly leftist party. It has a broad appeal and is the only genuine political party in that it addresses broad issues like the economy, and does not build its base on beating the communal and religious drums. There will be a lot of Sinhala liberals who will support the JVP. The immense crowds that came to Galle Face for the JVP rally was not bussed in or fed biriyani parcels like the Rajapakse crowds. There is a need to build up an alternative path. Even if the JVP loses, it will be set on a road that will eventually lead to change in Sri Lankan politics if they do not act like the old leftist like Colvin did but take the path that would lead to the progress of all the people of Sri Lanka. There is hope yet.

“It is a good idea that the minorities should support the JVP”

No doubt the JVP has been modernising itself since AKD was elected leader of the party, however there is no sign of old guards reforming their old ideas about Sinhala/Buddhist Marxism.

Please read their latest publication on
Submission of special advice to the nation:
      JVP’s-special-set-of-proposals_tam%20(2).pdf
      JVP’s-special-set-of-proposals_sin%20(2).pdf

It appears JVP has not consulted with “other people” when it drafted this document.
JVP is living in the same old banning mood, suggesting that it will ban parties with regional names or depicting exclusively a particular race or religion while keeping a deafening silence on Chapter II of the constitution.

Being Islamophobic is first nature to you.
Appearance of Wahabis sporting beard and burqas has nothing to do with your inborn ability to hate everything other than your brand of Sinhala/Buddhist fascism.

On the other hand it has taken you a few bombs and hundreds of lives to realise like you a noisy Muslim fascist minority is working on their way to build their own ghetto in and around certain areas, may the first Islamic Republic of Kattankudy.

Not much difference between your Sinhala/Buddhist fascism and their version of fascism, in essence both fascists want to do is to control every thought, word and action of ordinary people as did the other fascist in Vanni area.

    Ameer Ali,
No wonder why you have been blaming S/B extremism for Easter Sunday bombing by small minority of misguided Muslim youths. Yes, Monks like Medagoda Abhayathissa & Galaboda Atte Ganansara did advocate some kind of anti Muslim ideas but, on ideological grounds, these two din’t see eye to eye.

It is absurd to say that minorities in SL face a particular economic hardships majority doesn’t face. As a matter of fact, as far as HR and economic opportunities are concerned , relatively speaking, country is much better off today than four years ago. If there is any relative gains within any ethnic group, it is among Muslims and that was the main reason for M Abhayathissa ‘s concern; for Muslim began to wield an unprecedented political & financial power both in the sector of national politics & economics.

I can’t understand how Ameer Ali came to the conclusion that NPPM is a better alternative attain ethnic reconciliation & economic progress than the UNF when UNF has already proven what it could while NPPM only has wild Marxist dreams. NPPM still has to spell out following if it were to win my vote: 1. First & foremost, how much are the leaders devoted to Marxist principles? 2. How are they going to address the most critical issue of budget deficit? Both NPPM & Ameer accept this fact by referring to public dissatisfaction over failed promises. Why Ameer believes that the public has stomach for short-term hard choices under the NPPM if they are so impatient under the current Gvt? 3. IF AKD & the NPPM leaders are so devoted against racism, why not they came swinging against injustice against Dr Shafi & to protect Muslim communities from SLPP led attacks?

      KS,
It is not so difficult to understand reasons. 1. They live abroad & therefore don’t see ground reality; 2. even though they accept political culture of their adopted homeland without question, they tend to believe that SL political system is too backward. The second has very powerful impact on expectations b’cos firm beliefs force even the most brilliant people to look for non existing facts to prove their beliefs.

For example, Darwin told evolution is a result of accumulations imperceptible changes over long geological time. But the fossil record show that almost all species show up almost at once & then stay unchanged until they go extinct. Despite such clear fossil record, Darwinian evolutionists kept looking for evidences to prove what they believed without much success.

Intellect does not necessarily imply correctness. As a matter of fact misguided intelligentsia is the worst impediment for the progress of knowledge. However, I do welcome their errors b’cos it gives me an opportunity to correct myself!

The three significant ethnic groups in Sri Lanka seem to be at logger heads . Sinhalese are the much larger group. Tamils and Muslims are the minority ethnic groups. In a democracy with one vote per adult and people voting along ethnic lines, obviously only a Sinhalese person can become the president. As a result all instruments of power are also with this group. In developed countries the majority ethnic groups willingly create an inclusive society and government. They make the other ethnic groups feel that they are all part of the society and country. Unfortunately this has not happened in Sri Lanka. Though there are many Sinhalese who keenly promote an inclusive society, they are in a minority. . Ethno nationalistic tendency is high among the Sri Lankans and they feel that their enemies are from within the country. A regular Sinhalese contributor to the columns of CT has correctly pointed out recently that the ethnic minorities do not have any choice except to accept the dictates of majority ethnic group and non of the other countries’ governments will come to the rescue of a minority ethnic group s here. I tend to agree with him on this point.
As all other human beings Sri Lanka’s minority ethnic groups are trying hard to ensure self preservation and in that process are making a lot of mistakes. Therefore life will continue to be hard for minorities. It is my considered opinion that we must try hard to build bridges with the majority community to create an environment for peace and harmony; though this succeed only if the majority community Looks at favourably.
Coming to the presidential election minority vote will count in this election because there may be four Sinhalese Budhist candidates. There is an opportunity to minimise the ethno-nationalistic rhetoric and a consideration for an inclusive government. President of Sri Lanka is a very powerful position we must actively involved in it.

The minority in this country will always be the target of hate and racism, unlike other multi religious nations, that are thriving. It is the arrogance of the majority that has time and time again caused this country to erupt in ethnic violence, and made them turn on their neighbors at the slightest excuse, spurned on by disgusting politicians, who use them as pawns, for their own selfish ambitions. All it takes is a deliberately spread fake news about free sweets being given to the Sinhalese women to make them barren, or some ridiculous story about goolies, to make these uneducated mobs to berserk, to burn, loot, attack, and even kill. The blame lies with our politicians, first and foremost, who have sponsored these thugs, including the terrorists in saffron robes.

We are no Singapore, there is peace and harmony over there, because their leaders CARE about safety and security of all their people, and encourage unity. Our leaders only care about greed and power, and will set one against the other, to achieve it.
They don’t give a damn about uniting the country, and making it an economic success.

Like in singapore and in many developed countries, use educated minorities as sheep and get them to work. when they have money they do not complain. See SHAN AND CHITRA. they like it, the problem with sri lanka is we are spiritual and we are not worried about money. Cash greedy west uses minorities, religions politics, religious politics, provincial or local council politics, and any other weaknesses to ruin the country. Some Sri lankan politicians are catering to that. NGOs are there because they need cash to make their families are not hungry. In sri lanka, It is Muslims who blew up. but, supremacists are wrong. Buddhists never say our Almighty Buddha is the highest GOD and the only GOD. Almighty Buddha taught us to respect other religions.
Sinhala people should fight for their rights and the rightful place. What I heard, USA just destroy the country if the country submit to them. Those who did not submit to them survived. There are many such countries that were destroyed by them. On the other hand, some countries resisted the forceful invasion of privacy and they are surviving. I heard Even Saharan says the same thing. They are ready even to simply certain countries out from earth because, they did not help them enough.

It is time we understood what is the truth behind racism for onething , Otherwise as minorities we on the whole will.be doing injustice to a large segment of people who are not respobsible at all and by doing so we will be only pushing them towards it , if we are not careful with our choice of words when speaking or writing we as minroties will be causing the same damage .
Racism is nothing but are by product of covert plans of certain groups.
And unfortunately as much as most 1st world countries except Singapore( being the one and only daring nation to even shoot at sight to protect civilians) do not have a law riggid enough to end Racial and bigotry violence which has always been made use as a moment to take revenge , either its political revenge, religous hate , business rivals or even from a misunderstanding with a naighbour to a petty road accident sparked by prejudise .

This why all riots must be brought under the Terorist act.
Finally I disagree over the argument of giving prominence to Buddhism, all Muslim ,Christain and Hindu majority countries do it officially or unofficially as per the majority of their religion and some with color and ethnicity.
As long as minorities preveleges are not denied I see no issue at all.
To condclude , I was overjoyed to hear from.a close friend that The Dawoodi Borah Shia Muslim community is hosting their global religous event in Sri Lanka and already all our hotels are full , praise be to God, I salute this community and their leaders for this at a moment when Sri Lanka is in need , I sincerely hope other Muslim.Schools of thoughts too will follow the same .

Fahim, there is no animosity against Borahs or Malays. Both are pure bred and have a distinct ethnicity, language and culture. It is this half baked fellows produced by Arabs cohabiting with prostitutes and low caste women, who do not have a language of their own, who without any shame are trying to imitate stupid Arabs who became civilized only a couple of years ago, having learnt it from Coptics, Sumerians and Assyrians, who are being despised. There was no problem prior to this when those fellows spoke their mother tongue, dressed like their local ancestors and behaved in a humble manner in keeping with their status. I am sure the moment they dump all these signs of Islamic extremism and identify them as of Sri Lankan origin following the native customs, everything will be fine.

What I fear most is not people choosing what to wear , to eat or culture , I fear the continous attack on the right for one to dress , eat and langauge which is being down right petty, may lead to
to the fuffilment of the agendas of certain dangerous elements who are trying very hard to start another war in the disguise of defending Race , religion and Country .

Even the meek has a natural hidden force of defence which might trigger devastively if we continue to keep at it.

To set the records right ,Sri Lanka Borah ladies wear a overgarment called Rida which is also a modified and very graceful version of the Arab Abaya and do continue to speak their language and strctly adhere to their ancestral Gujarati customs , a large number of Sri lankan Malays also wear the very same Abayas as one to one same as ( most of the) the Sri Lankan Moors do , but they strictly maintain the Malay langauge and culture and traditions .
While The Sri Lankan Moors who claim to be of Arab decent ( still to be proved by DNA ) I admit have almost lost that orignal Uniquely Ceylon Moor identity totally and their tamil dilect of arwi or arbu Thamul ( v.sad) but are definetely more diverse than any other Sri Lankan Muslims , they speak all three langauges fluently and some still retain Tamil as their mother tongue and are fluent in reading , writing and spoken ,this may surprise you , though the numbers may be small now, I can assure you they are growing rapidly , there are those who have totally adopted sinhala as mother tongue and a very small percent who have adopted English as mother tongue among these sinhala groups some can only speak Sinhala and some may understand english and tamil but are unable to speak or write english or tamil, while those among who have adopted english as mother tongue some can not speak a word of tamil and are v. poor in the sinhala langue.
but none of them know Fusha Arabic sadly not even the one and only Sri Lankan Arabs The Subys who are now almost lost.

          @LP..
learnt it from coptics , I do agree with you on this one statement , yes The local Muslims do present this as a validation from The bible by St.Paul saying shave the heads of the women who do not cover their hair, yes based on this especially the Orthodox Christians mainly in Russia and else where have been wearing one to one the same Headscarfe and the outer garment while the Orthodox Christians use lighter colours the orthodox Jews do wear the same black and the ultra Orthodox even wear the nikab even in western countries.

I do not mean any offence to muslims who have chosen to dress in this manner claiming its a religous reguirement

            @LP – Coptics
            cont…
My personal oppinion is I do not agree that the Arab dress is the only form of dress to fulfil the Islamic requirement in maintaining modesty and the argument that both The pre Islamic Arabs and the Orthodox Christians and Jews dressing in that manner does not validate the argument of fulfilling religous modesty in attires.

There are many other options to modestly cover ones body as well as their hair ( if its to fulfil ones religious obligation) but to consider an Arab or orthodox Christian or Jewsish attire as the perfect Islamic religous dresscode for women is a poor case , I rather would word it as a Arab tradtional attire prefered by ones own desire to fulfil religous obligation as per ones own opinion.
As for pre Arabs , Orthodox Christians and Jews they have always dressed in that attire.
I am in no way denying the right for any Muslim women to dress or deny the right to exercise their opinion that is their freedom of choice.

              @LP .
now to conclude my reply to your comment.
You have refered to the ancestral mothers of the Sri Lankan Moors as Prostitutes and Concibines.
For onething you also have no problem in accepting they are probably members among your bloodline too and in all Mr.Lanka Perera one must honor the wombs that bore us men..
              (All women)
It is sad to see that most men who write with hearts filled full of hate do not reslise this.
              Its best not to
Insult any women and more importantly those who are not present today to defend themselves.
Best not talk ill of the dead.
Try not to hate somuch .
love is the best self hesling ingredient.
              may peace be to you.

Not all, only a very small minority of them are descended from Arabs . Afghans and other western Asians cohabiting with low caste or low morale Tamil women but the vast majority of them are descended from low caste Tamil Hindu converts to Islam or from Tamil HIndus who were forced converted to Islam , during the brief Delhi Sultanate rule in the Tamil country. Arabs and other western Asian traders hardly arrived to the shores of Sri Lanka but to South India, definitely not in the thousands. A few hundred arrived within a span of a few centuries and only a few amongst then would have cohabited with local women at every port of call. These men would have already been married to their close relative( usually their first cousin or another very close relative , as per Gulf Arab custom) and would have already had children to them . These were their legal families and children and they would have returned to them permanently not remained in South India or here to raise families with women they had cohabited during their journeys. DNA has proved that Sri Lankan Muslims have far below average Arab/western Asian DNA and basically they are the same, as the island’s Sinhalese and Tamils, who are all very closely related to the Dravidian people of South India and this includes the South Indian Muslims. All of them including the called partial Arab ones are 100% Dravidian( Tamil) on their maternal line , especially the ones in the eastern province , as it was Muslim men who went there for refuge and they were given Hindu Tamil Mukkuva women as wives to start a family , this is the reason the eastern Muslims follow the eastern Tamil Mukkuva matriarchal customs and law or used to until recently.

In the west, Minorities are seen. But, they are not heard at all. They are the most important contributors to the manufacturing economy. Ruling class occupy better positions and gets higher six figure salaries But, they are both not intelligent and educated sufficiently. Immigrants are well educated. They always complain, we are paid low, over worked and tired. I do not know the Sri lankan situation. Miatirhipala complains that Supremacists are the targets of muslims who use Narco – Terrorism. IT is the international community and NGOs who say muslims are affected and it is the supremacists to blame.
I know Facdbook – Cambridge Analytica do not like negative comments Anyway, R Pemadasa, helped to establish muslim superiority complex by establishing the 15th amendment. I think Arab money and islamic desire to expansion, Rishad Bathiuddin and Muslims buying Sri lankan presidents, Political parties and Prime ministers the problem worse for everybody. I think Rishad Bathiuddin and the gang will wait for Maithripala sirisena if not Sajith. But, there may be hiccups to those. When muslims, Tamils and Regional politics or the province and Local councils are a mess and when the parliamentarians are dumb thieves, International community is the happiest. That works for them.

If we want to help ourselves as a country, we need to keep all sentiment aside and vote someone other than 1. Gota, Maithree, or Sajith.
I would place my hope on AKD, though I am Sinhalese, Buddhist and from deep south. AKD will stamp out racism and play down religious based politics. He is the only candidate that can win while maintaining a secular outlook.
All minorities should vote for him because he is very much eligible, and unlike other Sinhalese Buddhist contestants.
Any other smart stints will not help minorities.
Vote AKD and let us pave the way for equality, securarity, justice and fair play.
Bringing Muslim or Tamil candidates will only divide the minority vote and minorities will not stand a chance anyway. It will be a futile effort.
Pit your weight behind AKD. Give Sri Lanka a chance to make a much needed change. Sweep out rogues, enemies from within, scumbags, etc.

    Dear Shan!
“,…the ethnic minorities do not have any choice except to accept the dictates of majority ethnic group and non of the other countries’ governments will come to the rescue of a minority ethnic group s here. I tend to agree with him on this point. “

I think you’re referring to Mr. Mahindasena. Not only Gnanasara, Athureliya, Chambika Ranawakka, Manida Rajapakse & family, Weerawangse and Gamanpilla but also Mihindasena and people like you are dangerous to the country. It is our country and we do not expect any rescue mission by a third party. We will fight for our legitimate right and respectfully die in our motherland, Sri Lanka.

I here, West made many countries failed estates. Everr time, they had used weaknesses of the country to make it fail and when they reigned inside the country they simply ruined it. Some how most Tamil politicians have learned lessons. It looks, Muslims wants to go another way. this batch of muslim need to be removed. We know Arab money, Arab expansion ruin countries. Sunnis need to be eliminated from Sri lanka. Ethinic Religious and other regional politics work for the west, and communities who respect that not for every body. Some countries have taken under control. Sri lanka needs to do that too.

“To make things worse the only issue that is going to dominate the political campaign of the three contending parties, UNP, SLFP and SLPP, is Buddhism and its supremacy in this country. This populist agenda is aggressively pushed by a univocal coalition of Buddhist supremacists led by members of the Sangha, supported by sections of the media and vested interests from the petty bourgeoisie.”
    —-
Oh! King Senerath why did you do the blunder of saving ‘Para Muslims’ from Portuguese butchers. If King Senerath did not commit that blunder the Native Sinhala Buddhists do not have to hear this kind of rubbish from a ‘Para Muslim’.

Ameer, You rightly say that more than half a century of communal politics has brought this country to this perilous situation. However, when you add that it started with language, you are not telling the whole truth.
    .
Did it start with language or with the concerted effort(s) to alter the demographic pattern of the country?
    .
Again, I am puzzled by your, ‘the Easter carnage should be seen as the violent response by local Islamists to counter the zealotry of Buddhist supremacists’.
Why was the church the target if it was against the zealotry of Buddhist supremacists.
    .
It appears that you are afraid that telling the whole truth would damage your objective!

Ethnic politics and Religious politics works for the Western demands. so, the govt has to get rid of those minorities who are their to full their political ideology. IF not west will never allow Sri lanka to live in Peace. they look away only after destroying Sri lanka. Sri Lanka has experience. and Muslims are not that dumb as Tamils are. Most of the present group of Muslim politicians MUST go.

It is questionable to make a parallel between the recent Galle Face rally of the JVP and the United Left rally in May 1963, except perhaps in terms of crowds or mass enthusiasm. Unfortunately that 1963 rally, at the leadership level, was not the birth of a new movement, but the last stages of a previous glorious movement. Perhaps it was not evident to some who marched and attended the rally. I was at the age of 17+ attended as a candidate member of the LSSP (Moratuwella branch) and already was a dissident to the intentions of the leaders. Disintegration already was there at the rally. Although Bala addressed the rally from the stage, he came and addressed us after that. I remember Robert Gunawardena and Shanmugathasan addressing their respective followers at the same venue, but separately. I hope that the JVP or the ‘front of 30 self-thinking groups,’ whoever they are would not have the same seeds of disintegration. It is also difficult for me to consider the recent JVP rally or AKD’s presidential candidacy as the ‘birth of a new movement.’ The JVP appears to continue their policies of course with some positive changes. It can be an opportunity for those who are fed up with the two main camps to mark a protest vote. The JVP’s future course of actions are still to be carefully watched and assessed.

    Ameer Ali,

With all due respect in the final analysis Sinkalams are Sinkalams . JVP is no different and even if they win ( which is highly unlikely) they cant deliver as you hope. Just look around you even the so called intelectuals who pretend to despise Gotha are behind him. They wish him to succeed eventhough they know under Gotah Sinhala Lanka willl become a pariah State unable to engage with the Western World . Can you imagine the Western Countries doing business with someone who is facing so many charges of Misappropriation, Murder , Torture.
I dont know much about Sajith but RW doesnt want to allow Sajith to stand as he is the only one who can put up a challenge to Gotha . RW knows he cant win but he wants to stand to let Gotha get elected as this is what promised MR on the morning after . RW is another CROOK. After all he is JRs son in law.

Largely agree with some aspects of Laksiri Fernando’s comments. JVP’s authoritarian, thuggish and murderous tendencies are well know. Those who went through the university system know it very well. I had a close view of it at the Medical College Colombo and the Science Faculty of Colombo university when organised student groups who had no backing from political parties outside opposed JVP hegemony. The current leadership were active members of JVP in their murderous campaign in 87-89. In fact it is being said that at least one of the top JVPers today later became a traitor (a “goni billa”) and helped security forces identify top activists of JVP who ended up in places like Batalnda (Ranil W would know them). Ameer Ali being from an earlier era may not know later day exploits of JVP.

One other point Lakshman Kadirgamar could have become an excellent PM for Sri Lanka if not for LTTE and it’s political backers. Muslim leaders have permanently forfeited their opportunity of becoming national leaders after they formed communal political parties in line with Tamils. Therefore minority politicians should take equal blame for not creating an environment for minority national leaders to emerge.
