Symptoms Of Anarchy?

By Vipula Wanigasekera

The recent assassination of Club Wasantha, a prominent figure in the nightclub business, has sent shockwaves throughout Sri Lanka, highlighting a chilling mafia-style attack. Club Wasantha was gunned down by two marksmen in a professional manner, and in a well-publicized mission, it appeared in a footage that one gunman was picking up a banana or some sweet while escaping the scene.

Numerous CCTV footages depicted the disturbing nature of the crime, suggesting the level of confidence and brazenness among the perpetrators. There is even speculation that one such video was being watched in real-time by the mastermind behind the attack, which, if true, should create fear even among those who are provided security nowadays.

The assassination itself is an indicator of the direction in which the country is heading, especially with elections on the horizon. The subsequent events have unfolded like a drama, unprecedented in their scope and implications. Many were taken aback by the publicized statement or confession of a suspect, conducted in front of the mass media. This act, likely never before witnessed in police regulations or ethics, saw the suspect being prompted for answers, raising serious questions about the integrity of the investigation.

Following this, a deluge of videos depicting the victim’s glamorous lifestyle surfaced, attracting thousands of views. These videos, while showcasing his life events, some carried a negative connotation in social norms, painting him as a controversial figure. Among these was an audio conversation between Wasantha and a monk, where the monk accused him of being a burden to society while Wasantha, in turn, threatened the monk. The complaint made by the monk had not been investigated, they said.

Adding more salt to the wound, images of Wasantha’s naked body in the mortuary were released on social media, probably sending a disturbing message: ‘this is what you deserve.’ This act of desecration not only reflects a deep-seated vendetta but also highlights the breakdown of moral and ethical standards in handling such incidents. The media, particularly NethFM and Chamuditha’s interviews, provided a detailed analysis of various aspects of the episode, though much remains unsaid and unexplored. These Youtubes in a way helps the writers to reduce contents of articles in the future.

Crimes and mafia-style assassinations are not uncommon in many countries, but the daylight murder of Club Wasantha stands out due to its orchestrated nature. It seems as though a script was being followed, with numerous players involved, suggesting a larger, more troubling trend.

The writer had previously predicted this situation, terming it ‘From Failed to Pseudo Mafia State.’ This forecast, made a couple of years ago, appears to be coming true as the influence of criminal elements grows and law enforcement agencies seem to be increasingly available only to guard politicians rather than ensuring public peace and security. Several attendees were also shot in this incident, with one dead and others, including Wasantha’s wife, in critical condition.

This is yet another reminder, underscoring the symptoms of anarchy where the rule of law is undermined, and criminal elements wield significant power. The proceedings of the investigation into Club Wasantha’s murder could serve as a yardstick for measuring this statement.

Lanka’s low and odor. One has to follow news to know about daily killings. Rajapaksas are closely linked to Mafia. (I remember mentioning after Easter and SM telling he didn’t know how Mafia works) Throughout history there is anarchy , …… Easter Mayhem, Political killings, Duminda , Lasantha, white vaning , more than 40 journalist killed, disappearance, police encounters … ……..our IGP himself is a human rights violator who tortured suspects in custody ( recently a man lost his testicles in police brutality). VW , didn’t mention those pictures of Wasantha partying with 60 % parliamentarians. Wasantha boasted travelling in specially made bulletproof vehicle while his wife too was carrying, a unregistered gun.

As people believe or say, Wasantha, is not just a gangster, but more than that. No Mafia member gets that close to PM / President’s family, take pictures, visit each others residence. He is also close to many of the politicians ( see DM pictures, Wasantha with 60 % parliamentarians ). ).Among many things , he manages hidden wealth, businesses, assets in foreign countries, finance election campaign and take care of political hit jobs. When Parliamentarians are restricted from importing, Wasantha managed to assemble his own bullet proof vehicle, carried unregistered weapons and had total control over ” low and odor “/ judiciary. Mara got rid of Wasantha’s rival in 2019, in a police encounter, so that he can take control of the rival territory. This came to light, and hence now it’s Wasantha’s turn. (uncertainty of elections could have hastened the move ). Mara is now checkmated because, he neither has power and desperately needs rivals help in recovering his hidden assets / businesses, managed by proxy Wasantha. Remember , 4 % Lankans own more than 1/3 of wealth .

If interested, people can read all about one of the most powerful, notorious and dreaded DON, “India’s own Pablo ” , Dawood Ibrahim , residing in Dubai. For decades, successive governments tried every possible way to neutralize, but to no avail.

          Hello Chiv,
I was working in Qatar when the UAE, Saudi, Bahrain and Egypt blockaded the Country. The Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani never gave in to the demands of these Countries. They hated him for his support of the Muslim Brotherhood and the Arabic Spring. Qatar had been supporting the Gazans and other Palestinian groups with the approval and active involvement of the Israeli Government and Hamas.
I also learned that Qatar considered both Mohammed bin Salman of Saudi and Mohammed bin Zia of the UAE as being deeply involved in Drug and Criminal Activities. Turkey and Iran both helped Qatar to survive the Blockade. The UAE and Saudi both fear their own populations and try to keep them in control.
Another reason that they don’t like Qatar is this “Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani International Excellence Award” https://www.rolacc.qa/ace-award/

        CHIV,
Six days after the killing of Wasantha on broad daylght, another shooting death was reported from Ambalangoda, another young man in his early 40ties was the victim. I dont condone any kind of murder, because true Buddhism guides us to be based on fundementals such as “Non-violence”:
        .
Even if my upcoming travels to home country/singapore is being planed, but I am little scared this time travelling across our home country.

Such Chicago-style murders hide many details. This is the situation MARA led criminal politics inculcated in our society as of today. Hope not that future govts will have to call for building “bigger prisons of ” El Salvador style. Lets hope the best …. we should all stand collectively against drug menace and underworld.

In many countries the shooters behind the arbitory killings have been made public within weeks if not days, however, this country is full of “self-inflators” and even 1-2 decades after the events, there is no information about the killing.

Sri Lankans have been tricked into taking pride in defeating their own civil war insurgents, and they still talk high on having a powerful tri-forcees and a top-notch police force, but high-crime police practices akin to an anarchic state in a poor region of the world.
Nevertheless, everyone who stands in front of the cameras exaggerates their overestimated abilities. It is just they have no shame.

A murderous massacre has become the norm in Sri Lankan culture by now, just as politicians visit “senior and most respect monks” and seek blessings.

Being close to rascals as politicians is the destruction of a nation and a country, may the Rajapakses be forever cursed. ! Drug lords own TV channels, and today the country’s upper class philanthropists mingle with self-proclaimed political powers. The media is on their side and … the politicians are on their side…. I feel that Sri Lanka is becoming an unofficial Colombia but in the Indian Ocean.

The country is infested with and run by Mafia men – Here’s one key person and a family of Mafia: The Chairman of the Western Province Tourist Board, and General Secretary of the Patriotic United National Party: Sugath Hewapathirana and his family. His work is readily supported by the person who comments here under the pseudonym ‘old codger’. He appears to be getting paid by the Indians to make Sri Lanka go banckrupt, among other things. These are in addition to being criminals also are perverts, closet rapists, who dream of gang raping women true Indian style. The get other men to rape girls, pretty rich ones and video record them and distribute among themselves to watch and masturbate. The master mind like you mentioned must be watching them real time. They not just protected but collectively aided by the highest political powers of the country, Mahinda, Basil, Ranil, Champika Ranawaka, Sarath Fonseka, Mano Ganesan, … the list is quite long. The 200 word limit isn’t enough to write all the names, but they will sooon surface, like all the other truths, or with all the other truths.

I beg to differ as someone who has read OC’s comments well for the past 7 years, as some continue to do so because his comments are always consistent.

There are simple simons who regularly add their own precedents without realizing that this is a public forum. If it wasn’t for OC, surely many like me would not have come to add their two cents to CT.
      .
A former medical graduate must be associated with great reasons to fall to the level of a roadside pervert. I am causality-seeker who follows the logic of any wrongdoing. Among the main reasons could be parental malpractice or indoctrination by his own peers and a few others. It could be family background or other inherent reasons that he struggled with in his youth.
This individual and former teachers also reveal some unbelievable information about certain people (hand-picked) without knowing that this is a public space. This kind of posts are continuing, CT does not seem to notice it either. People target people chosen by his or her will to satisfy his hatred.

    Vipula ,
    thank you.
The rise of Club Wasantha is again due to criminal politics of uncultured Rajapakshes. Not long ago, Goebells of Rajapaksa propaganda, Jackson Anthony kicked the bucket…. there too, what revealed was what people were not aware of..
    .
The underworld became strong and crimes were committed beyond the shores of Sri Lanka because of the total ignorance paid by MaRa. The entire network is run by Rajapakse minions of various natures. People should be clear that MARA sons are real bastards, however, they protected them from drug menace while the youth being thrown to it.
    .
If the Rajapaksas had the heart to stand up to the drug menace, they should have overcome it. But Bagar and others never had a whole heart to save the youth of this country. I don’t respect karmic rewards today because nothing seems to be working on Mahendra Rajapaksa who is the Mafia Godfather of this era in Sri Lanka.

Vasantha or similar rascals were promoted by mara politics because they funded mara popular political campaigns.
To the eyes of silent experts, these men looked like real beasts. However, the huge wealth they amassed through drug-trafficking, underworld activities and various other ventures was not monitored by the Mara regime for their own reasons.

This is somewhat evident due to disputes over underhand money dealings with drug peddlers hiding in places where Sri Lanka doesn’t have any extradition treaties. Another issue is that authorities are still not concerned or taking stern actions to seize missing, handmade, stolen, or illegal weapons from individuals. This issue stems from army deserters during the height of the war and continues today. If there were a much stronger gun control mechanism in place, we wouldn’t end up like Mexico.

      Dayan,
The problem started in 1989 when weapons were distributed to persons threatened by the JVP.
After that, there were weapons handed over in container loads to the LTTE to fight the IPKF.
Foolish political decisions are at the bottom of everything.

      • 6

There is an army in Sri Lanka that cannot afford it.
I believe we can start a war against the underworld and drug dealers today. why not ?
There is no more CIVIL war today, so all resources can be better used to round up weapon-bearers and serial killers. Otherwise, this will become an El Salvador sooner rather than later.

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cEMwYD_9Qsk&t=304s

Why can’t they work in every nook and cranny of the country and look for weapons that move freely in the country?

Then the licensed weapons should be captured in a database and others can be easily checked so that the country can be swept away and the people freed from their unnecessary troubles.

When I think of walking around the city today without knowing, I feel a little afraid that I will be able to go back home.

Maybe I’m exaggerating, but everyone should take this situation seriously.

          LM ,

Civil war was fought with foreign resources by the govt . So there’s
no such resources left over to be diverted to other needs . This was a
common miscalculation that war expenditures now can be put to
good use . Top priority should have been building peace as soon as
war came to an end but what happened was worse than that . They
all wanted to find new avenues to keep the people worried all their
life with new violence related issues , so , new violence of all sorts
came into being and old wounds resurfaced . They became a fun
and better income source . They didn’t know to do anything else .
Was it not already Anarchy ? Silent , Unprotested , Happy(for some)
Anarchy ? If not anarchy why rulers have this much of security
set up ? Even after retirement ? Freedom loving people don’t want to
be surrounded with guns and ammunitions . In every sense , we are
already an anarchy . Literally that may not be the case but as I said ,
A Silent and Happy Anarchy .

Thanks..I agree with you. Although our country is occupied by more ignorant AND unedcuated leaders (entire Rajapakshe roudy clan) than educated ones: I see this clearly compared to the last two years. In the last two years under RW he sacrificed much of whatever is said against him today: As a result, people can breathe in today. However, much more to do in the line of ” economic revival”:
            :
This is why I always repeat that the first thing we should have done immediately after the war was to rebuild the nation using all available resources. In a country that has been at war for 3 decades, everything has turned upside down. Above all, the mentality of the general public. Most of them tend to hate more than to make peace.

If that were done, we would build a “politically literate” nation capable of voting “correctly” and electing political representatives for the next step.

University professors and lecturers should have come forward to force the “RAJAPAKSA” rascals NOT to rule NATION the way they deliberately committed mass killings targetting the civilians in this nation.. What they did instead was to “abusing power” as the provable war criminals: today the whole nation is suffering as a result.
              .
What happened was that a group of mobs thought that the country could be rebuilt in the same way that civilians were arbitrarily killed during the war. This was fueled by SINHALA BUDDHIST RABID MONKs (the place given to the monk in his hell like country – is the root cause for all of our self-created destructions).
It was fueled by “Malecha media whores” and “HEAD-SHAVED hypocrites”: I am a Buddhist by birth, but I DONT kneel down before SB monks if I am not sure about the men hidden behind ROBES.

Pundit, isn’t he a typical Lankan SB (Pseudo Buddhist), see his wrist ( all kind of S…..tied ) prays regularly, threatens public including monk, Viyathgama member / financier, close family friend of Mara, owned 19 clubs, businessman owning wealth, not just Lanka but Dubai and other places ( Casino Dhammika prodigy ), gives interviews on media, would have been a potential Parliamentarian, if not Finance / Law minister in Namal’s cabinet, . Reportedly after the death of few Dons, 60 % politicians are now desperate and seeking help of foreign based underworld rivals, to take control of their hidden black money , assets, businesses……….. ( remember Panama and other documents, Nirupama . . . . . . ).

OC, Wasantha was one of the organizers behind Shangri-La strategy meeting ,. Many corrupt businessmen were convinced to attend, promising favors in return from Rajapaksa lead govt. I really don’t know whether all these business people are considered Viyathmaga or not. Wasantha preferred to be known as businessman than underworld criminal, to stay out of limelight. Hence he systematically eased out of clubs and other businesses, paid taxes, and moved to Dubai. Most probably this facade helped him to survive in Dubai, until things took a drastic change. I believe he was using proxies to handle his own businesses in Lanka and became a proxy for Rajapaksas in Dubai. Most of his financial windfall, reportedly was after 2019.

              Hello OC,
This is from the Sri Lankan FT by Dr Nalaka Godahewa in 2018 when GR was Chairman of Viyathmaga, he was also charged with misappropriation of Rs. 5 million belonging to the Securities Exchange Commission. Dismissed for insufficent evidence.
“Minister Samarawickrama represents a Government which has only been talking for more than three years whilst failing miserably in delivery. On the other hand, Gotabaya Rajapaksa comes with a proven track record of delivering results whenever he was entrusted with responsibility. So here is a clear divide between a talker and a doer”.
I wonder if he stands by what he said about GR delivering results.
Apart from that the following were at the forefront of the Viyathmaga – Major General Kamal Gunaratne, Dr Seetha Arambepola, and later Dr Priyath Bandu Wickrama, Dr Prasanna Gunasena and of course the Author Dr Nalaka Godahewa . Sounds like a Mafia to me.

                LS,
Godahewa currently runs his own party, the Freedom People’s Front. The guy is highly educated, both here and abroad, but is as corrupt as Dhammika Perera. Those who keep calling for “young, competent , Professionals ” in governance should take a look at this guy. It seems no local can tread the straight and narrow.
Seetha A is sidelined now, along with Weerasekera and the rest. Kamala G has made himself useful, like Tiran Alles.
The paediatrician cum geologist cum agronomist and President of the GMOA, Anuruddha Padeniya, disappeared from public life after making an utter fool of himself. Yes I have coconuts in my bag.
Human Rights are in your Constitution. It is time for you to read it especially Chapter III Fundamental Rights.
“Freedom of thought, conscience and religion. Freedom from torture. Right to equality. Freedom from arbitrary arrest, detention and punishment, and prohibition of retroactive penal legislation”.
No get-outs in the Constitution about “Wallets”
And also your Government signed this – The Human Rights Committee monitors implementation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), a multilateral treaty that Sri Lanka ratified in 2005. “The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights is a multilateral treaty that commits nations to respect the civil and political rights of individuals, including the right to life, freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, electoral rights and rights to due process”

    Douglas,
thanks for ironically calling me GERMAN wise man: I was about to answer it, I was bit late, nevertheless i just add it for your note here.

You will take some more time to realize the complex situation before us because your psyche is no different to our Badnarawela Man who expressed “his love” to you yesterday.

Just imagine the situation before us today – it is catch-22.((1961) A war novel by the American author Joseph Heller. “Catch-22” is a provision in army regulations; it stipulates that a soldier’s request to be relieved from active duty can be accepted only if he is mentally unfit to fight).

Entire people in South and other parts of the country are yet entwined with Mahinda Chinthanaya which deteriorated the society to all evil ends. That means those pro-RAJAAKSHE voters would not leave them easily yet today. That means, wise leaders should focus the voters of SLPP to be instrumental if they intend to succeed an election victory.
Is the AKD leader capable of working with majority parties (good people)?

You and I are well aware of the fact that whole lot of our people are behaving like no differnt “thanakola eaters”.

No matter the facts would be before their eyes what they perceive is farther difference from any sane people that would absorb. .

I am unable to comment on state sponsored thugery before Premadasa but the abduction & murder of Richard De Zoysa was my first understanding of political thuggery. Previously, a thug politician from the West coast area who openly peddled in ganja was gun downed by the JVP. Such actions portrayed the JVP as crusaders against injustice but the fact was, its vigilantism, not justice per se. Now AKD is promising to clean up the country of its undesirables but when the justice system itself is corrupt, it’s very much mission impossible, unless the JVP takes the bull by the horns as they did all those years ago.

Since Premadasa, CBK is said to have had her own hit squad but the Rajapakses took thuggery to new heights. Rajapakse thugs even received international attention when a British Indian was murdered in public & his girlfriend gang raped on the beach but MR ignored (initially) the request for justice by the then visiting PM of UK, Cameron, who walked out in disgust. During the Rajapakse era, drug trafficking & mafia style gangsters prospered with the blessings of MR & even small time punks & petty criminals became mega criminals & billionaires over night. Slimy Sirisena’s own family form part of this thug culture. Not only uneducated punks but criminals & even convicted murderers were appointed to Parliament. I am sure there is no other country which has such a number of low down punks & yobs in the Parliament as in SL

I don’t usually pay attention to social media but the links provided by the author gives an insight to the opulent billionaire lifestyle of these criminals, fronting as businessmen & ‘performing artists & models’ who associate these thugs, accused of laundering money for them. Its frigtrning how SL has become a gangsters’ paradise within a relative short period. From hypocritical monks (like the yob who died in the shoot out) to low life money launderers & tax dodgers, it seems making easy money is now in our DNA.

I hope AKD will be better than the old JVP in dishing out justice & wish him well but I am not holding my breath. It is said that the Mafia killed JFK & the CIA was behind RK’s murder because JFK, & RK, in particular, were trying to end organised crime but, conspiracy theories or not, the same fate may await anyone trying to reform SL because it will open a can of worms & the conclusion, SL future is depressing.

“I hope AKD will be better than the old JVP to do justice and do him good. But I’m not holding my breath. It is said that mafia killed JFK and CIA was behind RK’s assassination. JFK, & RK, especially , tried to stop organized crime. , conspiracy theories or not, anyone who tries to reform Sri Lanka will suffer the same fate because it will open a can of worms and the conclusion is that Sri Lanka’s future is bleak.”

        What we know about AKD:
He has no record of mastering his ministerial duties
He has no foreign qualifications to manage any type of international related issues
He has no personal experience of mastering business projects
He has no special qualifications similar to the United Nations or other international bodies

        What we knew about Gotabaya:
        Former Defense Secretary under Mara
Worked for Colombo beautification project – explaining to people that he did some good work

Although Gota is said to have good intentions for a better future for this country, he was kicked out by July 2022.

So in a country ruled by AKD, … what cant go wrong ?Over to you !

The Rajapakse’s will provide law and order. That’s the one thing they are good at. But the type of anarchy the author is talking about is possible in about 15 years, post-Rajapakse. I have personally experienced it in S. America. Extreme wealth inequality combined with gang violence.

      LM,
“The Rajapakse’s will provide law and order.”
Do you have anything to say about this sentence written by the jungle genius who often criticises your English? 🤣🤣🤣

Rajapakse has provided law and justice.. That’s why drug dealers and serial murderers are increasing rapidly today.

I don’t care what “empty vessels” say about me or others. To be honest, I deal with several languages (Dutch, German, French and English) and sometimes, I often leave my CT texts incomplete, while travelling within and out of Germany … almost every week. . Anyway, most of the commenters know what I mean. But MaRa – blind believers are an exception.

Poor guy caught up in “Sinhalese chauvinism/extremism”: that’s what happens when a few refugees like him get camped in the UK these days.
My German neighbor (87 years old male) is a former administrative officer of the city council, who recently added to me that some refugees like Lester are not allowed to move freely in the country.

Like the late NDS and other racists, they became extreme racists after returning to this country after completing their Ph.D.

Apart from that he goes through all the negative thoughts without being able to distinguish anything.
So does the Bandarawela joker who has added elsewhere that he should be able to say whatever he thinks is right, but when I missed the term “Philadelphia” instead of its state name in a previous comment, he’s trying to TEACH me and the CT readership.🤣🤣🤣.

One can justify a typo. Not so in the case of bankrupt losers who stand in line at the almsgiving, then run home and bash the same monks.

            old codger / March 11, 2024

“Which begs the question, why is chicken selling for around LKR 1200 when it is around 400 in our neighbourhood?”

Imagine being an elderly loser unable to afford chicken.

Even with Aragalaya, you couldn’t make Rajapakse go away. Just some gutter trash barking loudly on anonymous websites.

      Lester,
srilanken lawyers are not serious enough. The evidence is below.
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SyvaWies9Y
They would do anything and everything forgetting their swearing in as a law professional.
I’m not crazy about justice in a country where everything is the other way around. And people aren’t against corruption either. TO me, those who commit even minor crimes should be punished, having lived on the west, I can’t tolerate things happening in favor of any criminals.
      .
In between, I believe karmic retribution is real now or later. We believe that when it comes, it will be like a DOMINO EFFECT…. we experienced something similar with Saddam Hussein and Gaddafi’s family. I have no sympathy to those who abused the entire nation just because of their power greedy propensities. They knew that our people are highly susceptible to get caught by easy prey, neverthless rascals lived up their hidden intoxications on and on.

      So, Rajapaksa hasn’t gone away?
You mean, Ranil is his incarnation?

SRI LANKA IS BECOMING EL SALVADOR thanks to the total ignorance of DA RAJAPKSHES’ sons for 20 years.
      Curse these dogs !.
However, Lester or the like Rajapaksa’s minions still support them.
