By Shyamon Jayasinghe –
“ David Hume proposed that a claim of a miracle has one sure test of veracity: the possibility of the miracle not happening should be even more crazy than the possibility that it did.” ~ Wattala Claim
I have no desire to run down any religion and I am sans any religion. On the other hand, I am impelled to examine claims that are tantamount to a war on science -claims that can only serve to deceive a gullible public. The latest sensational story is a tale about an alleged miracle at St Anne’s Church in Wattala, Sri Lanka – a dominantly Catholic suburb.
The claim is made by the Parish priest himself-Revd Father Sanjeev Mendis – listening to the story told by a young woman who reportedly said that she saw drops of sweat pouring down the visage of a picture of Jesus given to her by some priests who brought the picture from Chalakkuddi in India. “We had family problems for some time and these subsided since the miracle began,” said this woman. “I have experienced some strange feelings which are hard to explain ever since this miracle began.”
Religion Depends on Miracles
Religious institutions world over and through the ages have depended on miracle stories to boost their faithful numbers. I say this is yet another one like the old ones. Persons in authority like the priest in this case should be doubly careful before they spread a narrative of this sort; they have a responsibility to tell the truth.
The Bible relates many such miracles during the time of Christ. The very resurrection from a state of death of Jesus Christ has been the centrepiece. Turning water into wine and feeding thousands of people with just one loaf of bread are just a few of the biblical stories.
Among the modern ones include the miracle at Lourdes and the miracle at Fatima, Portugal. Australian national pride was heightened when the Pope recently canonised one of her citizens, Mary Mckillop, as “saint” for having “successfully interceded to cure a cancer patient.” The Buddhists-although adherents of an atheist religion – have their own stories about “Iddi balaya, ” which is a kind of ability to levitate and fly through air without any mechanical device like an aeroplane. The latter power is alleged to have happened not by divine intervention, however, but by effective deep meditation.
Violate Natural Laws
These tales do one thing: they claim certain happenings that violate natural laws, which form the very heart of scientific and technological investigation. The God -believers’ stories are that it is divine or supernatural intervention. The ‘supernatural influence,’ contradicts natural laws and naturalistic explanation for phenomena. The simple reason is that we never experience such interruptions in natural laws in any general sense save for a few and far-between isolated personal stories or anecdotes.
David Hume on Miracles
David Hume, the 18th century Scottish philosopher and an intellectual giant in the history of the philosophical enterprise, gave the best logical repudiation of miracle tales-to date. Hume wrote his account in his, “An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding.” Even Professor Richard Dawkins does little more than develop on what Hume did say. David Hume first posits through the evidence of our experience that there is a defining regularity in the universe that is reflected in what are deemed laws of nature. The sun rises every morning. A ball thrown up, falls to the ground by the operation of the natural law of gravity; tides come in and out in regularity due to the gravity of the moon; liquids behave the same way, day in and day out. The illustrations of regular happenings of natural events are endless and the evidence for such regularity is vast. This observed regularity creates a kind of habit in our minds to predict that they would occur again and again in the future. Science and technology has advanced so much today on the central assumption of such predictability. Therefore, the “laws,” are factual or are firmed in every pragmatic sense. Since they work, we accept them. Admittedly, it isn’t logical to believe that just because a serial of events and consequences occurred in the past they would occur in the future, too. Hume admitted this illogicality but accepted the scientific truth on a pragmatic basis.
Taking off from the “fact” of these laws and the invariability of their occurrence, Hume proposed that a claim of a miracle has one sure test of veracity: the possibility of the miracle not happening should be even more crazy than the possibility that it did. In this way, one needs really substantially big evidence on behalf of the proposition that the miracle did happen. The balance in evidence should, in other words, heavily be on the side of the possibility of the miracle having actually occurred.
Application of Hume Criteria
We will leave the Biblical claims aside as we are a far away from history. Just take the Wattala case:The young woman’s experience could possibly have been an illusion driven by suggestion. The report states that the woman had experienced family problems. Her troubles would have heightened her mental vulnerability to suggestion and illusion. In general, illusions can occur to anyone bathed in extreme faith or even in someone who has mental health issues. In the Wattala case, the appearance of tears in the picture of Jesus were not seen by any multitude of witnesses. Even in the instance of a “multitude” witnessing, there is something called collective illusion. It is also possible that a chemical reaction had occurred over something accidentally fallen on the picture. Thus, there is more probablility in favour of the miracle not having happened. Applying Hume’s criteria, the claim fails. I remember, years ago in Polonnaruwa, there was a story about Buddha’s halo (Budu Res) displayed on the sun at the premises of the Somavati Chaityaya. It was, later, found that that was due to a car mirror causing a reflection. Until then, hundreds of unsuspecting villagers rushed to the scene and pilgrims arrived in busloads to worship.
Lourdes, Fatima, and the Australian Case
The case of the cancer cure by the Australian saint, has been explained by scientists that remissions do naturally occur at a percentage rate among cancer patients. Yet, Rome went on to canonise the lady.
Many of the stories of ‘cure in Lourdes,’ have been similarly identified later by a panel of scientists as being remissions that occurred coinciding with patients bathing in the pool in Lourdes’ “holy water.” Professor Krauss, writing in the Los Angeles Times states that “the percentages of cures from cancer at Lourdes are much the same as those for spontaneous remission in the population at large, but of course only a few of the claimed cures are from cancer.” The Lourdes story began In Lourdes, in the Pyrennees, where in 1858, when Bernadette Soubirous claimed to have had visions of the Virgin Mary. Millions have dipped themselves in the water by Lourdes in the hope of a cure.
What of the sun miracle at Fatima, in Portugal. It has been described differently by witnesses. Some claimed that the sun “spun pinwheel-like with colored streamers,’ while others maintained that “it danced.” Others reported that before the “dance of the sun” occurred, they “saw white petals shower down and disintegrate before reaching the earth.”
The whole issue is shrouded with controversy although the Church had declared the events worthy of belief as a miracle. People “elsewhere in the world, viewing the very same sun, did not see the alleged gyrations; neither did astronomical observatories detect the sun deviating from the norm (which would have had a devastating effect on Earth!). Alternative explanations would include “a combination of factors, including optical effects and meteorological phenomena, such as the sun being seen through thin clouds, causing it to appear as a silver disc. Other possibilities include an alteration in the density of the passing clouds, causing the sun’s image to alternately brighten and dim and so seem to advance and recede, and dust or moisture droplets in the atmosphere refracting the sunlight and thus imparting a variety of colors. The effects of suggestion were also likely involved, since devout spectators had come to the site fully expecting some miraculous event, had their gaze dramatically directed at the sun by the charismatic Lucia, and excitedly discussed and compared their perceptions in a way almost certain to foster psychological contagion.”
Conclusion
It is clear that in all theses cases the application of David Hume’s criteria would rule out the possibility of miracles having occurred since the options available to regard them as not having occurred far outweigh the “evidence,” presented to support the proposition that the miracles did occur.

It is disturbing to see human naivety based on religious beliefs, even in this day and age…the results when it’s taken to dangerous extremes is catastrophic, as evinced by religious fanatics
/
oldcodger / December 10, 2017
It seems that religious hysteria is not limited to Non- Christians.
The parish priest has jumped the gun in this instance by declaring it a “miracle”. Probably even the usually staid and circumspect Catholic Church has succumbed to the flood of astrologers, feng-shui practitioners , arahants and such shown daily on the media.
Perhaps the hierarchy should check out the present status of former “miracles” like the image of the Virgin on the wall of a church in Moratuwa (water seepage?).

Just like competitive racism (SLFP, UNP, JVP, …. ) religions also need to be competitive in order to pitch for more devotees, more funds, large loud speakers, miracles, state patronage, …. They compete for the market share just as any business organisation would do to increase its sales or sustain it at the same level.
–
I am not sure whether each of these religions devise any strategy based on game theory to increase its respective share of the devotional market.

Thanks for the write-up. We need Abraham Kovoor to interpret this ‘Miracle’ correctly, before more faithful are fleeced.
Amarasiri also read about this “Miracle” on the Daily Mirror, his thoughts were the same as yours. Either natural phenomena, imaginations or hallucinations, that cannot be subjected to the scientific method of reproducibility., and could it be the latest marketing gimmick by the Church, given that the average IQ of the audience, the faithful, is 79
Something more than a miracle: Says Wattala Parish Priest
http://www.dailymirror.lk/article/Something-more-than-a-miracle-Wattala-Parish-Priest-141876.html
The picture of Jesus Christ where droplets of sweat were seen emerging from the forehead at St. Anne’s Church in Wattala depitcs something more than a miracle, St. Anne’s Church Parish Priest Rev. Fr. Sanjeev Mendis told Daily Mirror yesterday.
He said the miraculous incident enhanced the faith of the people in Jesus Christ more and motivated them to believe the presence of the Lord, the Savior.
“More people are flocking together and praying the Lord. People seem more repentant for the sins they have committed against the Lord. That’s really a deed of God,” Fr. Mendis said.
Ms. Shromi Nirmal said it was a visible symbol to signify that Jesus Christ is dwelling among us.
Mohan Kumarapperuma said a miracle has happened in his life after witnessing this miracle.
“It is something I have been looking for but nothing happened. Once I was praying before the image, I was informed that what we as a family were hoping for has become a reality. Praise the Lord,” he said

Right or wrong, it occurred through nature or not, what happened, happened when drops dropped from the face of a picture of Jesus.
And of all places, from a picture with Jesus’s face.
Why of all places right where it happened?
It is neither could be attributed to religious fanatism or dangerous extremism.
It occurred at a most unusual place that happened to be related to the religion.
If it is, such a co-incidence should not be viewed in such extremes.
The catholic Church normally makes indepth investigations into such incidents. Therefore let it take it course.
Untill such time let the faithful visit and the rush is an indication untold problems faced by the people in our society today. Let them take some solace with Jesus as our Politicians have let us down.
Today, people will run to any god to seek favours to overcome problems.
Therefore, this is NEITHER FANATISM OR EXTREMISM.
This is just an indication of burdens & problems members of our society is faced with.
Nobody would throng a statue or photograph if they were not faced with hardships.

Tony Bushby (Bible Fraud)“ the ‘original’ Greek text was not written until around the mid-Fourth Century and was a revised edition of writings compiled decades earlier in Aramaic and Hebrew. Those earlier documents no longer exist and the Bibles we have today are five linguistic removes from the first Bibles written. What was written in the ‘original originals’ is quite unknown”
Kersey Graves (Bible of Bibles) “The Roman-Catholic Bible differs essentially from that of the Protestants, having fourteen more books. The Bible of the Greek Church differs from both. The Campbellites have a translation of their own. The Samaritan Bible contains only the five book of Moses. The Unitarians, having found 24,000 errors in the popular translation, made another translation containing still many thousands errors. The American Christian Union, having found many thousands of errors in the King James Translation, are now engaged in a new translation. How many more are we to have, god only knows. Martin Luther condemned eleven books of the Bible…and thus made a Bible for himself. Paul’s Epistles to the Hebrews he denounced in strong terms…Dr. Lardner and John Calvin each condemned five or six books, and had a Bible peculiar to themselves.

I had some respect for Shyamons views all these days, but with this him having misunderstood Hume and trying to exhibit his inability to respect religious sensitivity of other people is pathetic to say the least. I do not think Shyamon has the wider understanding of even science to say that every thing can be explained by sciences. Shyamon you really need to understand philosophy better and science better to comment on things like this . your attemp to apply philosophy is rediculous. I hope you have enough time to read some thing more on Hume.

I agree with Thondamannay and let time decide on the outcome of this in the future. I as a parishioner of this church support the action of the parish priest. Yesterday at holy mass he got the girl to explain the happening in her own words. He told the people to freely decide on their own and form their own opinions. There was no hype on this happening. The priest promised appropriate investigations on this as is the norm in the Catholic church. No body has taken this as a sensational happening but as a vindication of the faith one believes in. I think it is not proper to insult a person on his or her faith.

Jayasinghe,
These incidents need to be investigated systematically, using the scientific method, and sort out the facts from imaginations, illusions and hallucinations, which people are frequently subjected to, as history is full of them. You should ask the girl if the Sun goes around the Earth, as it is states in the Holy Bible, Joshua, stopped the Sun for a while day. Joshua 10:13
New International Version
So the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, till the nation avenged itself on its enemies, as it is written in the Book of Jashar. The sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed going down about a full day.
New Living Translation
So the sun stood still and the moon stayed in place until the nation of Israel had defeated its enemies. Is this event not recorded in [The Book of Jashar]? The sun stayed in the middle of the sky, and it did not set as on a normal day.
English Standard Version
And the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, until the nation took vengeance on their enemies. Is this not written in the Book of Jashar? The sun stopped in the midst of heaven and did not hurry to set for about a whole day.

Shyamon Jayasinghe: the miracles are Tele evangelist Priests (not every priest) giving sermons is very common. Some TV programs proved how they do it and how they stop mothers who have come to the front with true disable children. It is all programmed and they know how to do it. with respect to water drops falling, they could have done it if they kept a ice-cold glass of water on the other side of the photo. Simply because of the very low temperature (falling down dew point temperature) water drops would have developed in the air of the other side or fog developed every where near by.. If you are interested ask buddhist monks about the present miracles like things, you yourself may be able to practice it and be convinced.

Dr. Ganna Sankaralingam,’
Buddha used the “Anti-Gravity Pad” to overcome the gravity and fly from Bodhi Gaya to Lanka, and hover over the natives, as described in the Deepawamsa, – a hypothesis.
The Dipavamsa or Deepavamsa (i.e., “Chronicle of the Island”; in Pali: Dīpavaṃsa), is the oldest historical record of Sri Lanka. It means Chronicle of the Island. The chronicle is believed to be compiled from Atthakatha and other sources around the 3-4th century. Together with the Mahavamsa, it is the source of many accounts of ancient history of Sri Lanka and India. Its importance resides not only as a source of history and legend, but also as an important early work in Buddhist and Pali literature.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dipavamsa
The Dipavamsa refers to three visits to the Island by the Buddha, the places being Kelaniya, Deegavapi Raja Maha Viharaya, the place where the Bo-sapling was later planted within the Maha Mewna-uyana (Park) of Anuradhapura. It does not make any mention of the Buddha visiting Adam’s Peak

Shyamon,
What is striking is the triviality of the things these people call ‘miracles.’
There are thousands of Sinhalese and Tamils who have lost their limbs during the war.
Has anyone ever been made whole? Can prayers by all the believers in the world make it happen?
Now if that happens, we can start to think maybe there is something substantive to such claims. Or, say, a man suddenly develops birdlike wings and flies in the sky, without any mechanical contraption or balloons. There would be a clear and present case that couldn’t be explained by known science. Instead, people see ‘halos’ , ‘tears’, etc., or have ‘dreams’…. and rush to claim miracles. And gullible people everywhere still fall for it.

Human knowledge has benefited thru scientific studies, no doubt. However, Science has its bottlenecks.
(I wish to avoid delving into this for a variety of reasons.)

Now, a personal story.
***
We were four of us seated on the veranda, leisurely chatting. A man on the street, passing our home, indicted that he wished to speak to us. We signalled the man to enter our compound.
On reaching the edge of the veranda he said that he was a palm reader. I was not impressed.
But my sisters readily invited him to mount the steps.
They each got their palms read. They were quite satisfied with his reading.
The man insisted that I too should have him read my palm. I declined.
***
He said that he could prove that he is ‘special’. I was ready for that!
(For all these he was bare-bodied above his waist.)
***
The man asked me to scoop up for him, a handful of the white sand from our front yard.
On being thrust on his wide open palm, he closed his palm. Mumbled something. Opened his palm again. Within those few seconds the sand in his palm had turned into white holy-ash!
***
I admitted to him that he possessed some special ability, but still declined to offer my palm to be read.

Thappu,
That’s a pretty underwhelming tale. There are professional magicians who can do much better than that sand trick. Check out Paul Daniels on you Tube. He doesn’t claim divine powers either.

oldcodger,
You appear to have overlooked my, ‘I am a science graduate, who was later on the staff of the University of Ceylon, Colombo’. Reasoning and logic is not beyond me.

Don’t forget the jury is still out on the decision of who single-handedly won the war. Until that is settled Sri Lanka will find new issues create new conflicts before finding solutions to many old problems. Were you and the Walter Mitty – Black and Decker expecting to live in a great country after the demise of your all purpose VP?
–
Now the country needs new excuses, invent new threats from regrouping LTTE and or Diaspora.

Where is your calender boy?

“No explanation is possible to the non-believer and no explanation is necessary for the believer”. This is the Parish Priest’s observation regarding the apparition of Blessed Virgin Mary at Lourdes. Miracles do happen in our own lives but unfortunately we are not alive to such events . Many things happen in one’s life about which he or she is clueless, but attributes it to intervention from God. Even an atheist by nature is forced to accept the reality of the super natural being called God. It will be worthwhile to examine and understand the circumstantial evidence surrounding such an event that has happened in our lives. I am sure we will come to realise that miracles take place in our lives and in nature too.

After reading this article, I stood up and applauded. Charlatans and desperate and delusional humans like to believe in these so called “miracles” because of their own insecurities. I was told about the “any budu ras” by a very educated person too. They want to see what they want to see; it is not different from Trump and his followers wanting to believe the self-perpetuated lies they themselves disseminate. I want to thank you for this opinion column. Some times in the west people claim they saw Jesus’ face on a doughnut or a piece of bread too. In Sri Lanka gullible insecure politicians believed in the Sai Baba conjuring up stuff to impress them as magic too. Popping out a gem stone or a Rolex watch depending on the wealth of the worshipper was considered divine. Rationalist thought will lead to enquiring minds that weigh these claims. Remember the loud noise polluting South Indian Evangelical Preachers disturbing our peace at Havelock park or Colts grounds? Pretending these sons of bitches can heal the crippled or blind is an utter farce too. Thank you

Ref AGNOS’ December 11th post. He makes an important point, namely the frivolous nature of miracles reported. If God wants to prove he is living and kicking he can through an agent perform a substantial miracle like entering a cancer ward, curing the terminal patients immediately and getting the latter to walk away free of the cursed disease. No fuss after that as all non-believers will become believers and all united in one religion! tell the Wattala priest to pray to God that this happens

no need for god to go to cancer ward.God can just let pillayar drink the milk.Christians and catholics would have immediately shouted miracle, but we hindus just say capillary science or something and just play it down.In our hearts we are so confident of our religion that we don’t try to convert anyone and do not care if hindus convert to other religions, unlike others who are not convinced of their religion’s authenticity and use it like a political tool to increase their numbers.
you are not superior to god to tell him how to reveal himself. He will do that in his own ways.God works in mysterious ways and we humans haven’t the capacity to go into god’s mind and think like god. Some people tell me, ok, if there is god why is there so much terrible things happening. With my limited capacity i can only think of that powerful angel Lucifer which we now refer to as the devil fighting to overthrow god.It happens to us in organisations on planet earth too where you may trust someone and give him all the powers and find out he is now using it against you to topple you and take over the organisation. We have to fight against evil and give our support to god.Doing nothing is giving passive support to the devil.

Interesting article by Mr, Shaymon Jayasinghe but here are my thoughts in a nutshell. I used to be like you until my thirties and especially in my college days thinking that reasoning is the ultimate any other thoughts of the super natural is for the backward in mind. But I have since then begun to see how there can be much more phenomenon than what our minds and senses can gather.- In other words it has been most humbling to accept that there is “out there” things we cannot explain or see or is beyond our limited reasoning. In a nutshell that our reasoning is limited and physics etc might ideally a lot of this in the future. it also has been an extremely uncomfortable and scary journey to consider the possibility that there are things our minds cannot reason out This does not mean that “budu ras and miracles on Jesus photos” makes sense- I do not believe in them until I see and have not. But I do know if people who have certain mental powers which have enabled them to disclose things that amaze us. Have you watched the Japanese martial artists who break rocks- isn’t it sheer mental power ? But if you go to reason it there will not be an answer. Have you heard of studies performed by physicists which have found an alteration in the structure of water in water to which there has been chanting done. So lets leave that to the physicist.
