The London Brigadier & The Red Flag

By Dushy Ranetunge

Dushy Ranetunge

The unfortunate incident involving Sri Lanka’s military attaché to London, exposes the challenges faced by the Sri Lankan administration, struggling to steer the nation away from the gates of the International Criminal Court.

Waving the red flag of Tamil Eelam in the face of the hard line, nationalistic segments of the Sri Lankan population, is like waving a red flag in the face of a Spanish fighting Bull.

The red flag is waved in front of the bull, to provoke it into a trap, leading to its ultimate demise, and the bull falls for it every time. So does the hard line, nationalist segments of Sri Lanka’s population.

Every year on Independence day, aggrieved Tamil citizens of Sri Lanka, some of whom may now be European citizens, demonstrate outside the Sri Lankan missions around the world waving their red flags. It’s their democratic right to protest.

The bulls that react to this waving of the red flag, unfamiliar with the democratic norms of the civilised world will not only facilitate their demise, they will also embarrass the Sri Lankan republic. They demonstrate intolerance to civilised democratic norms to which Sri Lanka is a signatory before the United Nations.

The function of the military attaché to the Sri Lankan mission in London is not to be its security guard. He/she is the point of contact for British security agencies, to enhance the security of both nations, with periodic meetings for security cooperation between the two nations.

Historically, those who hold this office do not leave behind adequate files, or information to brief new arrivals who take up this post. There is professional rivalry to the detriment of Sri Lanka.

Perhaps a new procedure needs to be developed, where the Ministry of Foreign Affairs maintain files in Colombo, of community contacts and procedures with regard to this post, so that new appointees could be properly briefed and contacts shared. In the absence of such information, even LTTE operatives in the past have visited the Sri Lankan High Commission in London and introduced themselves to new appointees to this post with a view to causing mischief.

In 2015 the then Mayor of London, Boris Johnson declared that waving ISIS flags in London should not be a crime. This was in response to an incident where police officers allowed a man with a little girl to wave an ISIS flag in front of the British Parliament.

Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe, the Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police said carrying the black flag of the terrorist organisation was “not necessarily the worst thing in the world”, adding that the police should not overreact.

Californians, Catalonians, Basques, Scots, Irish, Tamils, Kurds, Kashmiri’s, Tibetians and many others wave their flags demanding separation. Waving flags and expressing an alternative opinion in a peaceful manner is not a crime.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a statement clarifying the issue and apologising for the unacceptable behaviour of the Brigadier. The actions of the ministry has contained the situation and addressed the issue effectively.

The LTTE war is over. The State has demonstrated beyond any doubt that it has the capacity to enforce its writ from KKS to Dondra and from Colombo to Batticaloa.

This is a time for generosity, not insecurity of the ignorant.

TheBrigadier Priyanka Fernando should have offered tea and biscuits to the Tamils outside, protesting in the winter cold, and if they had shown hostility, he could have demonstrated to the world, the generosity of the Sri Lankan’s and the intolerance of those who espouse the separatist cause.

Luckily for this Chamberlain-like appeaser, he does not reside in Sri Lanka. And luckily for Sri Lanka, most of its people aren’t Chamberlain-like appeasers– as will be evident by Feb 11th– or else the Tigers would not have been so utterly crushed.

        Dushy R,
Brilliant response by you to Dayan the pseudo nationalist and former Senior Minister in Varatharaja Perumal’s North-East Province Administration.

Dayan for the sake of a few bucks and position wholeheartedly supported Perumal’s Unilateral Declarations of Independence (UDI) for what was then known as the North-East Province. So much for Dayan’s patriotism!!No wonder he ruined Sri Lanka in Geneva.

There is no need to offer Biscuits or Tea for raging bulls. Actually while diaspora /LTTE supporters carrying their Tiger flag and demanding , they were humiliating Srilanka by standing on our national flag . why would any one offer such pleasantries to such a hostile crowd ? Brigadier’s throat slitting gesture may not suit for his diplomatic role , yet showing off his Srilankan flag is not an offence .LTTE supporters were clearly provoking the situation and then crying foul .

There is joke said about the Kotte King’s representative who visited to Lorenzo de Almeida to his ship. When they returned back, they said to the king “Your Majesty, they are biting on the rocks and drinking the blood” which is meant to be misidentified bread and wine. Biscuit and tea are British diplomatic way. Blood and rock are Portuguese descendants of the De Silvas in Lanakwe. I don’t think our Smart Patriotic Thero who spend his time with Cabernet Sauvignon and West Tennessee Whole Hog will be able to tolerate Dushy Ranetunge cheap technique of Lanakwe Dilmah and Lemonpuff.

OH PLEASE DJ, Who bribed LTTE FAT PIG to win the PRESIDENCY in 2005? Who ran away from London with his tail between the legs, in the face of violent LTTE scumbag demos, after failing to deliver a speech at Oxford Union? Who stole LTTE gold? Who hugged Karuna? Who loves KP? How many far bigger, a lot more vigorous LTTE demos have you witnessed in London, during Hambantota criminal clan’s misrule? Have you read Auditor General’s latest statement on Sri Lanka’s debt crisis? Who are the real TRAITORS then? Keep singing for King Kong. Just in-case. You might win the JACKPOT. Cheers!
PS: Dear DJ, the National flag is there for national pride and unity. Not to wrap yourselves in it to win local elections. You are SHAMELESSLY using a mishap committed by this poor Sri Lankan Brigadier.

who signed a CFA that was extremely partial to LTTE?
who let the Norwegian enemies in?
who let the LTTE import powerful comm. eqpment?
who let the LTTE bring weapons during Cease fire and punished the navy officer who apprehended LTTE ships?
who let the LTTE to travel around the world and get international recognition?
who brought down security in cmb which helped LTTE to infiltrate 200 suicide bombers in CMB?
who let the LTTE leader to get international recognition?
who was about to give assymetrical federal state to LTTE?
who was about to give LTTE ISGA?
who let Norwegian NGOs to infiltrate North and East?
who let LTTE to get away with every crime under CFA? And reprimanded the SLA unreasonably?
who let the LTTE have high tech weapons during CFA?
who let the LTTE to bring armaments, small pistols and many other things under VIP protection using Katunayaka air port?
who let the LTTE have air force helpcopters?
who let the LTTE to make SLAF, their chauffer when travelling between wanni and east?

The Present PM of this country which mega idiotic UNPers like you blindly follow. If MR bribed the fat pig, then it is a master stroke where the SL state ultimately emerged as the victor. It was under RW’s CFA, the Norwegian NGOs could bring 200 hp boat engines for LTTE under the pretence of helping tsunami hit fishermen.
First, mega idiot and extremely uneducated UNPer, go and look into the history of this country and what thatr moron RW did to SL…

          Sach,
One correction. Though it is said that the CFA was signed, it was not signed in the presence of one another. They signed at different places and at different times. The signatories were violators of Human Rights – the Army. the UNP and the LTTE leader. No one has the CFA. Ranil never signed the CFA. After the CFA was signed by these Human Rights violators, Ranil just waved his hand.
Moreover, R.Premadasa demonstrated his stupidity in the transportation of arms and ammunitions to the LTTE after having a honey moon with the LTTE and eventually went into pieces by a LTTE suicide bomber.
Had the Indo-Sri Lanka Peace Accord been genuinely implemented, there would have been a lasting peace in Sri Lanka.
There have to be a CHANGE from everyone from the bottom of their hearts. After all, CHANGE is the base for everything. Until such time, this will be a continuing story.

Dayan the apologist for crime, why did Srilanka send this fellow with “Hori” caused by Balu Makka bite to London, for him to scratch his neck all the time. He showed his upper arm where he received an injection to stop the itch. So better he is expelled back to Srilanka as he could transmit his contagious disease to British citizens. Did you hear that UK has given two weeks to recall him. Therefore shut your mouth and obey the order, without falling into the ignominy of expulsion from UK.

Hell burning, your allegation against me is malicious, as I was never an apologist for LTTE crimes. As a medico-legal officer in war zone in early part, I correctly documented crimes committed by all parties including armed forces and LTTE. I still say that LTTE was never given any mandate by majority of Tamils to kill non combatants and eliminate dissidents and therefore whatever they did is a crime. Fighting Srilanka armed forces cannot be considered a crime as Srilanka armed forces were sent to unleash terror on Tamils and subdue them. Since 1979 what criminal acts committed by armed forces on Tamils is well documented. If the government had tackled this problem in a political manner rather than trying to solve it by resorting to military force, none of this crimes would have occurred. Unfortunately armed forces are still continuing to terrorise Tamils.

It’s about legal and ethical distinctions not double standards. Incitement to racial hatred is a crime under British law. Believing in the Caliphate is not. Democracy in action

        Mark Salter,
Thanks a lot for your engagement in this highly charged debate. I too believe SL has room to tolerate LTTE fanatics. Despite them treating SL flag like a doormat. Right opposite our embassy. While a battle-hardened Brigadier, who had labored for years destroying LTTE frontlines in northern SL, to liberate us from FAT PIG’s 30-year long jackboot terror, was looking on. I even agree the embassy should have offered those LTTE lunatics refreshments as a reward for protesting as opposed to sending endless suicide-bombers or kidnapped child-soldiers to deliver them a utopic, ethnically-cleansed, Tamil only enclave in multi-racial, multi-religious, tiny Sri Lanka. TOTAL UTOPIA! But, they are entitled to their pipe dream. Cheers!
        PS: MARK SALTER,
        1. How would UK have reacted to Nazi Flags in front of D-Day Omaha beach British veterans, during V-E Day celebrations in London?
        2. LTTE raised millions of GBP in the UK during the 30-year long brutalizing of Sri Lanka. Show me a single occasion, where the UK seriously curtailed LTTE fundraising. NONE!
        3. While this Brigadier’s behavior was unsuitable for a diplomat, he is no racist criminal. His record in SL and in London documents a man who goes out of his way to reach out to Sri Lanka’s Tamil citizens. A grieving father who had lost his tiny daughter to Dengue fever back in Sri Lanka, while he was still fighting the blood-thirsty LTTE on the frontlines. He committed an emotional mistake in London. In the heat of the moment. Why are the Brits so quick to occupy the moral high-ground? Why all the patronizing lectures? Who are those LTTE lapdogs, in the UK Parliament, who sprang into action by writing a letter 2 seconds after the incident? I call them shameless hypocrites. I commend the LTTE UK for running such a mean lean propaganda machine though.

See the difference in calibre between a gentleman like Dushy and a so called ‘educated’ hyena. Dayan proves beyond all doubts of a very cheap, low minded, dirty bum sucker ready to stoop to the lowest to bring back his former masters at any cost. He is taking the maximum advantage by using this unfortunate incident to gather some cheap votes to his masters with a big hope that they will get him a diplomatic posting somewhere without being backstabbed and humiliated like last time.

There is no limit to what the “kitchen pointer” Dayan will do to get a pat on the head from his master. He wasnt even the master’s No. 1 dog. The No. 1 dog who was allowed to sleep in the bedroom was that other scoundrel Sajin Vaas. Dayan was the mongrel mutt who was tied in the back yard. Sajin was given the choice cuts. Dayan was thrown the left overs from the Rajapakse “baby’s” plates but yet he keeps wagging his tail and following the master. This animal is a true Sri Lankan pariah.

A very good matured dignified article. Every year the Tamil speaking people will protest in front of the High Commission on Independence Day. It will stop once the North and East are amalgamated , greater autonomy given to them in a United SL. That’s the time Tamil speaking people would feel that they are equal in SL similar to the time before British rule and during British rule. What a blunder the British made in just handing over the contry to the majority with no power to the minority. The quetion arises whether the independence given to SL was LEGAL ? ? Free thinker

“After a war, the winner enslaves the losers – economically and
culturally – plunders them into oblivion” SLA certainly did. However, you clearly don’t understand what you write. What you state was the order of the day during Genghis Khan’s time and in the middle ages. Mankind has come a long way since then – a fact that seems to have escaped you. War today is fought in more civilised ways according to various international Protocols. Obviously, army men like you have never heard of these. That is why some of your behaved – in the 90s and now – like uneducated, undisciplined beasts while conning to the world you fought with one hand on the gun and one in the Geneva Rules book. The tragedy is our army had uncultured men of extreme prejudice like you. Unfortunately, you may have inspired bestial tendencies in t
your men. This is why most Sinhala soldiers see all Tamils as their mortal enemies.

You write very sensibly Dushy R, but generosity of spirit as a show of strength is largely unknown to the Sri Lankan sinhalese, in a country ruled by the blind who classically display the insecurity of the ignorant, as they charge the red flag unerringly, each time they see it.

This country needs men of sagacity and courage willing to say the unpopular truth so that we may join the progressive world of the moderates worldwide.

EDUCATION, EDUCATION and still more EDUCATION is the only answer.

I am a sinhalese by the way in case the poisoned pens are aimed elsewhere.

      Justice & Fairplay.
It is so unfortunate that sane voices like yours are so scarce in the Sri Lankan debate. However, the influence of racists and fascists is what has got this country to its present sorry state and I’m afraid that that is not going to change anytime soon. Education is a gradual process and as they say, “There’s the rub.”

Emil, on the same subject, sensible people would have noted the statements of two young Ministers – Ruwan Wijewardena and Navin Dissanayake made in connection with this disgusting gesture by the Brigadier and be saddened that they – as two young men for the future – have now proven they aren’t fit and worthy to straddle the world stage as leaders, alongside others of broad vision and sentiment.

I agree, education is a gradual process but it also requires intelligence to assimilate. People of little vision, little intelligence and having no idea of the modern world’s view have tried to lead this nation for far too long.

The time is ripe for a monumental change. Will not agree that among 22 million others, there isn’t one, fit enough to lead this nation the proper way. The search must begin.

Excellent article Dushy Ranetunge. Thank you. Hope this will be published in Sri Lanka’s mainstream media in Sinhalese and Tamil. So that stupid Sinhalese and Tamils can see the light. And not be such easy victims of defeated King Kong’s or LTTE scumbags’ propaganda. Both groups are pouncing on this London Brigadier’s poor judgment opposite our London Embassy. There is absolutely no reason for Sri Lanka to be so insecure about a gang of flag-waving LTTE SCUMBAGS. But, how their well-oiled propaganda machinery sprung into action with their BRITISH PARLIAMENTARY LAPDOGS charging, in a split second, is cause for alarm. The ideological war against in the age of social media, against LTTE hatred, will be far tougher. SL should not be complacent. TOP-NOTCH INTELLIGENCE SERVICES and DIPLOMACY second to none are a minimum in waging that battle. Cheers!

War is over but not the cause for the war. It is still a “NEERU POOTHA NERUPPU” Tamil Saying.-meaning( Ashes are covering the fire and the fire is still burning under neath).

Please specify the cause. Is it still PEALAM? Is your leader FAT PIG still alive under-cover? Can we expect his return imminent? Be careful Bro, the burning fire underneath might burn you once again. DO NOT PLAY WITH FIRE!

By now you should have realised the Call for Eelam was dead same day Vattukottai resolution was passed.

Out of goodness of your heart never ever consider separating the country without the consent of the Hindians. They will be very cross with you.

At the same time unlike the Brigadier treat all people well. Else strangers and neighbors will find it necessary/convenient to grope your women folks. It is not a matter of stopping your favorite Peelam, it is a matter of urgency how to stop the hooligans battering their own people, alienating them, denying equal access to opportunity and their own habitats, ………………

Imagine how this hooligan will treat you as a neighbour if you peacefully challenged his conduct towards your grandma, your mum, wife, sisters, daughters, grand daughters, aunts, …………………

He also falsely believes he single handedly won the war, I can see it from his smugness and mannerism.

Looks like you are asking for another beating. But in the end what will happen is, you will be safe in whereever the by god Western Slum you are at. But it will be the poor Tamil women who will have to bear the brunt of it. Tamil men enjoy being whipped. So, perhaps the War will put a smile onto their faces.

And keep in mind, this time our boys will flatten out the whole peninsula into a large concrete pile. You will have to crack through the concrete to find the remains of your relatives.

If it’s war you want, you can have it.

      • 6
        1

        Reginald,

Your boys just ate kavung as the Indians, Americans and several others fought the one-sided war against a hand full of boys. Indians and Americans did it, not for their love for you but merely to keep China away from the real estate they have been eyes for half a century!

Tamil men may enjoy being whipped in preference to spinelessly conceding to inequality – but no Tamil man will send his wife, daughter, mother and sister to wash Arab backs (and fronts) so that his daily kassippu is paid for.

Did you see that even the draconian Philippine President has said enough-is-enough in quenching Arab men’s thirst – I guess it just opens up even more opportunities to send your nieces as well to ME!

Go, enjoy the kassippu as the starved Arabs feast on your women and send the spent ones back in caskets for replenishment.

Unfortunate, provocative and crude language. You will never come under the classification “An Officer and a Gentleman” It is soldiers like you that brought disgrace and disrepute to this country in Haiti and elsewhere – where our armed forces men were expelled en masse for what you now threaten on helpless Tamil women.

It is time to heal and make-up. Are you educated enough to learn the lessons from Japan and Germany in WW2 where the winners turned victory to magnanimity and forgiveness. American capital is rebuilding Vietnam – only after 3-4 decades of bitter War.

Learn from that great sage Siddartha Gautham from India – more widely known as Buddha (the Wise One) whose doctrine preached
tolerance, kindness, love and humanity. Why does this not sink into the average Sinhala psyche? I am reminded here of
the late Thondaman (Snr) who had occasion to criticise “Sunday Sil Monday Kill” Know what I mean, Rtd Lieutenant???

            Dear Jim

The country is still undivided and so they are my armed forces too – although in July ’83 they clearly demonstrated in the South as well Tamil civilians were their enemies.

But let me tell you this. In recent times, including the present, the head of the army speaks the language of reconciliation and gives the impression he means it. I hope they follow this up by returning illegally seized land and real estate to the rightful owners – Tamil civilians. Remember, the war was over about a decade ago and there is absolutely no chance of an armed insurrection against the State. As Mr.Sampanthan says over and over again, Tamils want the army to remain in the NEP but in reasonable numbers and for the maintenance of law and order only. Not to conduct themselves as an army of military occupation.

          Varathan,

With all due respect, you must acknowledge that in the case of WW2 and Vietnam war, the loosers didn’t try to demand anything from the winners. Instead they spent time licking their wounds when the winners came to their aid and lent a helping hand. And don’t also forget that when the Japanese were about to be further penalized after WW2, that it was a so-called Sinhalese Buddhist who came to their aid and made a thundering speech that eventually dropped the sanctions against Japan. Today, Japan is enjoying it’s prosperity thanks to this SB.

And please keep in mind, I am one of those wo would love to see economic prosperity return to Jaffna. But it’s your people who are threatening to restart the war. See the above post.

“A Sinhalese Buddhist came to their aid …..that eventually dropped the SANCTIONS against Japan …. Today Japan enjoys prosperity thanks to this SB…” If this is your understanding of post-WW2 Japanese history my sympathies are with you. You read the process quite erroneously. JRJ did make a conciliatory speech that the Japanese appreciated but to apportion to him
what you do is off the mark.

However, I’ll take you at your word “you like to see economic prosperity return to Jaffna” That, Sir, is the way to go in the spirit of a civilised army/men, the human and right way.

If you had someone in the army during the period of 1986 -1990 ask them by my name.

If you have someone in the army, ask them to check the records for you for the time period I mentioned.

Well said, Dushy R. The old Brit liberalism and decency in full flight. It is satisfying there remain many fine and tolerant Sinhalese like you still around. Equally, the
narrow unprincipled, opportunistic chamelions like DJ also will eke out a living – by hook or crook, to use an old cliché. Feb 11 is not the end of the world. The country that survived the tragedy of the 1970 “victory” will survive – though somewhat battered and bruised more by shenanigans and mosquito-weight scholars.

This article by Dushy R is evidence enough ,if such evidence was ever necessary , that all Sinhalese are not racist just as much as all Tamils are not LTTE.I my self was the recipient of the generosity of a Sinhalese neighbor who at gray risk provided shelter and food during the 1983 goon led riots

There are good and well meaning people in both communities (in fact the racists on both sides are in minority)and this provides an excellent foundation to build on for a united Sri Lanka.

Thank you to both Colombo Telegraph and Brother Dushy Ranetunge for this article. It provides so much hope for our beloved native land.

Who said all Sinhalese are racist. A minority within the Sinhalese are Sinhala/Buddhist fascists. So are section of Tamils. The rest of the Tamils and Sinhalese are simply stupid.

In Ben’s case he used to vacillate between a Sinhala/Buddhism and a Sinhalese. However he is working very hard on himself to identify himself with liberal Sinhalese. Now and then we need to remind him about his direction and nudge him where to steer.

Allow me to correct you, dear Soma. There are many in the Sinhala side who are majoritarian. Some in the younger ranks in the Tamil side inclined towards Separatism in the absence of any formulae for peace and Reconciliation. And so in the Muslim side. It is up to the now well-organised Sinhala extreme – supported by the Mahanayakas – to provide the necessary space for Tamils to live in peace, safety and harmony in all parts of the country – as previously. The powerful priesthood should enable political will and the necessary accommodation. If this is achieved there is room for the Muslims to be made politically satisfied.

There is still much room for peace and unity. As the old adage goes “where there is will, there shall be hope”

    1. There are MANY sinhalese who are concerned about the other and ready to see the other side.
    2. No such people among Tamils
    3. There are MANY Sinhalese who empathise with tamils and even LTTE.
    4. NO Tamil has the capacity to do that.
    5. Sinhalese are ever ready to criticise the gov
    6. NO Tamil is ready to criticise the LTTE but ever ready to whitewash LTTE

There must be something really wrong in the Tamil culture which gives birth to sociopathic, extremely racist, extremely tribal, overly ambitious individuals, who are experts at lying when it comes to history….or why are we living with such a community in this island

Additionally show a big photo of a Multi Barrel Launcher. that maks certainly Tamil emotional. HOw about those naked tigers in a hand tractor when they caught in Anuradhapura. All naked in one trailor. They would certainly say, we are not LTTE. We just wanted to show we are hurt because we don’t have own country. .

For anyone interested in my response to Dayan Jayatilleka’s comment above, along with his article on the same issue in yesterday’s DailyFT, is here http://disq.us/p/1pzyb8g (Comments section below article itself).

With polling day coming up tomorrow in Sri Lanka, Dushy Ranatunge’s reminder of how democracy is supposed to work in practice seems particularly apposite. Not least underlining to the right of people you fundamentally disagree with to nonethelesss express their views publicly. Providing it is done peaceably and without being judged to incite racial hatred.

All of which is the case with the LTTE flag-waving, VP-chanting protestors against whom Brigadier Fernando elected – if that’s the right word – to resort to his appalling throat-slitting gesture. Personally I am utterly opposed both to their expressed views and actions. But provided they don’t break the law in the sense defined above, I completely support their right to do so.

The sordid Lankan Brigadier rant (via sign language) shows the culture in the Lankan Army.
The sacking and rescinding of the sack shows the cracks in the coalition.
The Lankan Army Commander has said that the matter will not be pursued any further. Shows who is in charge. This is where the real danger lies.
Unfortunately right now, the Dayan extremism has the edge over Dushy-type moderation.

On the subject of stupidity, I trust that Dayan J will have by now seen my response to his own sub-optimally intelligent piece of pre-electoral tub-thumping – wrapped up in a raucous piece of appeasement-bashing (a favourite refrain of his) in last week’s FTDaily (‘Comments’ section below).

Depressingly, during the election campaign’s final stages Brig. Fernando seems to have moved inexorably towards the political centerstage. The fact that someone whose response to Tamil protestors – not LTTE cadres, but civilian protestors – is to make a clear, unambiguous throat-slitting gesture is certainly a sobering reminder of how far the process of inter-ethnic reconciliation still has to go in Sri Lanka. But it certainly doesn’t indicate, as DJ somewhat contemptuously suggests, that the sentiments voiced by the article’s author are anything other than laudable. Unpopular, scoffed at by sections of the Sinhala nationalist camp? For certain. But no more than that – and certainly not a sign of the author’s being ‘out of touch’ things that, in Sri Lanka as everywhere, really do matter. Starting with the civilised, tolerant, democratic impulses underpinning his expressed views.

All in all, it’s an approach on which DJ himself might usefully conduct some further reflection.
