The Microphone Was On

 By Sarath De Alwis

Sarath de Alwis

The one thing … that is truly ugly is the climate of hate and intimidation, created by a noisy few, which makes the decent majority reluctant to air in public their views on anything controversial. … Where all pretend to be thinking alike, it’s likely that no one is thinking at all.” ― Edward Abbey – Essayist, Iconoclast

When what we think and do, lack integrity there is only one word to describe it. We become frauds. Our acts become fraudulent.

We make feeble attempts to become comfortable with our deception. Losing the authentic self is the price of pretended integrity and mercenary stardom on the small screen.

“Wadapitiya” is the title of the popular political talk show aired weekly by ‘Derana’ TV network .

“Argumentative Amphitheater” would be the near flawless English construction. “Polemical Playpen’ would be a close second.

Arguably, it is the most widely watched TV talk shop that entices cock-a-hoop politicians of all persuasions.

Last week the program itself and its multitalented anchor made news.

Mahindanada Aluthgamage – A senior Minister of the current caretake cabinet appearing on the show, unleashed a fiery condemnation of a specific community that he alleged, carelessly spread the COVID-19  virus in his hill country bailiwick.

Aluthgamage is a politician. He is not an expert on public health. It is reasonable to presume that his knowledge of the disciplines of immunology or epidemiology could be comfortably accommodated on a pin head.

This simple truth escaped the attention of the TV anchor – Chatura Alwis. He did not bother to ask the politico why he did not leave that responsibility in the hands of state officials handling public health.

Despite this slight omission, the TV anchor was the quintessential public policy arbitrator.

Upholding the highest traditions of Journalism, he interrupted the garrulous politician.

Is it fair to target a specific community? He asked. The TV anchor’s dispassionate innocence added further fuel to the Minister’s mock indignation.

He accused the ethnoreligious minority of deliberate, willful flouting of emergency health regulations, announced by the government.

Of twenty positive cases detected, 19 were from that community. Now can we possibly permit such behavior he persisted.

The TV anchor expressed alarm. Identifying a specific group as responsible for the spread of the infection would be unfair and counterproductive, he warned.

That warning, however, came after the Minister was given full rein to wax eloquent on his indictment of the hapless community that he targeted.

With unabashed venom he derided the behavioral norms of the community he was determined to name and shame.

It was now time for a commercial break. The microphone was still on. The participants after their exhibition bouts quietly relaxed.

Then came the coup de théâtre that went viral on YouTube instantly.

The TV anchor told the Minister ‘Mata dan ganak denna oney oya tika kiyanta dunnanta” [ I deserve a reward for letting you release that bit of diatribe]

Readers will note, I have avoided naming names except that of the Minster. Subsequent to the faux pas he released another statement reiterating the substance of his earlier outburst.

Revisiting the psychosis of the jingoist minister or deciphering the deception of the artful TV anchor is not the purpose of this essay.  It has a more pragmatic purpose.

Electronic media in Sri Lanka are not subject to any supervision by a regulatory agency. A free debate is good for a democratic society. But presenting personal opinions as facts on the ground needs to be condemned.

In the lonely drift in lockdown land, I cannot dismiss this incident lightly. The politician with his diatribe fingered one of the foulest of wounds. It cannot be left unattended either. The Russian poet Anna Akhmatova tugs at my weary conscience. “As the future ripens in the past, so the past rots in the future –a terrible festival of dead leaves.”

In lockdown land, the terrible festival of dead leaves allows us no respite.

A fawning media electronic and print makes politicians callous and unaccountable.

The TV show is aired by the TV channel that is named after ‘Terra’ – the roman goddess of earth. The cognoscenti of this troubled land know that its brilliant owner creators indeed now parade as they own ‘Terra’ the earth goddess.

The episode of the Microphone that wasn’t switched off and the subsequent uproar that failed to takeoff has a lesson.

When an implacable crisis hits a society, the fundamental reality of that society is exposed. The exposure, if you care to look will show the ghastly, gruesome state of nature of that rotten society.

It is that actuality that surfaced when the TV anchor, the minster and at least one  other participant forgot that the microphone was on permitting the world  to be privy to their professional  perfidy- the profession of politics and the profession of manufacturing  political opinion. .

The Pandemic crisis will define the times we live in. It will shape the future that awaits us.

We are now discovering, in real time where power lies, what  people treasure and what people fear.

Thanks to the pandemic and the lockdown, we know who has less and who has more. More than that, we know who needs far more than what they already have.

This has happened before. When the black death overwhelmed the humankind, we looked for someone responsible. Unable to fight the invisible virus, humans decided on the next best thing. They shut themselves in closed compounds and hounded out ‘undesirables.

The senior Minster from the hill country who heads the list in his district was retreating to those dark times in history. He is not only dark in complexion but is also dark in mind.

In fighting the Pandemic words matter. Social distancing is physical distancing while maintaining deep links to social solidarity.

The World Health Organization has issued the guidelines to media. Stick to facts. Don’t report or repeat  rumours. Above all do not stigmatizing patients.

Poverty of information spurs negative gossip that helps the pestilence to spread. Timely honest information helps to halt it.

This pandemic is scary.

What happened at the ‘Vada Pitiya’  reflects that all pervasive scare of the unknow.

We are sacred of the unknown. In such irrational fear, we must find someone to blame. It is much more comfortable to replace panic created by an enemy unknown with a villain identified. It is much easier to associate our fears with others.

It has another danger. When minorities are stigmatized as being the ‘other’ they automatically withdraw into their comfort zones.

The WHO has summed the process of ‘othering’ the other. “Stigma can undermine social cohesion and prompt possible social isolation of groups, which might contribute to a situation where the virus is more, not less, likely to spread,”

If people are trying to hide their illness to avoid discrimination, they are less likely to get tested or treated.

We need a consistent, calm levelheaded message. Who will switch on the microphone and give it?

Microphone was on. The world heard the goddess of Earth – ‘Terra’ singing the hymn of deception. Dharanee is the Sinhala name of earth goddess. Romans regard her as a goddess.    Goddess or Mother she frowns on deception.

Sarath, see how Silly Lankas “Loo and Odor” works. People are getting arrested for misinformation in social media (even though some are not intentional). But a politician/minister and a Journo are in public involved in racial bashing which in turn eagerly grabbed by Stupid Lankans , who then goes on to defend , these slimy characters. When more than a million people affected and a lakh dead, Lankans continue with their immorality. Some retards laugh at our neighbors. Even after the numbers spiked exponentially after a religious meeting in Delhi, most CM and politicians have come out warning not to make it a communal issue. People are urging to be united to fight this battle. Lankan politicians /prelates were pleading not to discriminate the Chinese but yet encouraging to discriminate our own citizens.

Sri Lankan society is built on a solid foundation of hypocrisy.
Tourists marvel at the smiles of the people but know nothing of the language, so they are unaware of the degrading insults being directed at them in Sinhala. This is a curious phenomenon found only in Sri Lanka. I have been to other countries where I understand the local language, but nowhere else have I seen taxi drivers talking to each other in raw filth .
This is the culture now dominant among politicians, clergy, and most of the public. Protest against animal slaughter but kill people if they aren’t your kind. Vagrants in yellow talk about Allah’s genitals. The same vagrants then make up rules that they are beyond criticism, and the meek baiyas obey.
It is therefore no surprise that the private face of Derana is so different from its public face.

Muslims are good or bad is a second thing.

Derana being a TV channel boasting they are No. 1 in everything, and trying to be CNN, BBC or ALJAZEERA of Sri Lanka, should have accepted responsibility for this blunder and come forward with explanation or apology. Their own staff is involved in this.

It’s not an issue of good or bad, it’s an issue of right or wrong.

Good & bad are everywhere, among Sinhalese, Tamils or Muslims.

Don’t be jealous of if Derana attempts to be CNN; any media has a right to be like that.

What can’t be found/understood is what’s that blunder.

How can be the talking of the truth be a blunder?

Hasn’t it been noticed in SL/ India/ Malaysia & Indonesia that Muslim people gather together & visit places regardless of others lives?

It’s not blunder & Derana doesn’t have a reason to apologize.

It’s people like you to make that apology for making a big row over such a silly matter.

            Real Revolutionist,
            _
A talk-show presenter getting caught making racist comments live on air is an embarrassing & serious matter to editorial standards of the channel. Minister could have said anything, wouldn’t hurt the channel, but not the presenter. Other countries, channels have fired anchors for as silly as playing with their pens. So, your CNN is missing something?

If you don’t see it a blunder, perhaps, your dad not practicing safe-sex was the blunder that I am having to explain all these here to you.

Are you busy making Kewums for New Year, brother?

              There you’re

Why should ab cry so much if a presenter becomes an amateur.

Just say he’s amateur; not that he’s racist or he made a blunder.

Has it been exclusively only Muslims who were caught breaking quarantine rules and mingling with the community or hiding their travel history? What race were the Italian returnees who were mainly responsible for starting the second wave of infections in Sri Lanka? What an ignorant person this Real Revolutionist is.

As for the gathering that happened in India, there are many at fault and the lockdown was only announced after the gathering had taken place. As soon as a lockdown loomed, people started to leave and some couldn’t because if flight cancellations. Why did the government allow the gathering to convene? The spoke person says they weren’t even screened. The government should be more aware of the implications of Covid-19 than any religious group, and take preventive measure.
Also there have been large gatherings by people of various faiths shortly before the lockdown as well and a few even after, one of them by a minister no less!

This real Revolutionist idiot is nothing but a racist. Go and tell your views to the WHO or UN or to Western media that Muslims are largely responsible for the Covid 19 in SL and see how they respond

Old Codger, You make an interesting observation.

How often do we hear people of one community, when they are amongst themselves, refer to a person of another community in racist terms. I have often heard Sinhala people refer to a Tamil as “Para Demala” or a Muslim as “Gery Marakkaya” and worse. Then, in terms of caste, they say, “Gahala Padda or Berawaya” and such like. I wonder what the Tamil or the Muslim call a Sinhalese when they are within their community or what the so-called low caste person says about ‘higher’ caste individual. Interesting to find out.

          CBG,
I understand spoken Tamil quite well, and I can assure you that Tamils and Muslims do not do this, even when they think you don’t understand. Of course they use filthy language in arguments. Sadly, it is the Sinhalese who mostly do this , especially against foreign females. Just go to a three-wheeler park and listen.
The Tamils do have their caste hang- ups, but I have never heard a Tamil or Muslim refer to a nearby outsider in derogatory terms. Derana was simply acting to type.

If Sinhalese do para/geri/gahala/berawaya things they too deserve it.

          Are they bad words?

Para means an outsider, so Tamil estate workers & Muslims might be called with para adjective reasonably or unreasonably but it’s right as they have come from outside.

Geri, to my knowledge geri is cattle, it’s mainly Muslims who slaughter them so geri marakkalaya for them. Marakkala is another name for Muslims.

          Is it so discriminative?

Gahala – sorry I don’t know the meaning of gahalaya but I guess it’s people who put into practice the kings order to separate body & head with a sabre.

Berawaya is drummer, descendent of an artistic family so they must be proud of it.

I am not interested as to how Tamils, Muslims and Sinhalese call each other in derogatory terms, however I prefer to call all those extremists, racists, bigots, idiots, liars, morons, ………………….. as descendants of Kallathonies, irrespective of their, race, religion, region, gender, …………….

Please suggest us if you have any alternative common names.

If u really want to know where we are at if a Muslim refers to a Tamil or Sinhalese using a derogatory term, unless the said person had significantly wronged the speaker, all Muslims I know would be shocked and very possibly limit interacting with that person in the future.
Simply said it denotes very very bad character to badmouth others with no reason.
This is standard behaviour of some??? Now I see how the racist elements are nurtured

Right with u in agreeing that all the liars and thieves and killers and racists deserve names

      Sarath de Alwis,

      Re: Microphone On

“When an implacable crisis hits a society, the fundamental reality of that society is exposed. The exposure, if you care to look will show the ghastly, gruesome state of nature of that rotten society. “

“It is that actuality that surfaced when the TV anchor, the minster and at least one other participant forgot that the microphone was on permitting the world to be privy to their professional perfidy- the profession of politics and the profession of manufacturing political opinion.“

Richard Nixon’s tapes. The microphones, the same thing.

      Thanks for the article.
This is evidence-based racism. This is what you hear when the participants and the audience are racists.

Why don’t they curse the Chinese, who introduced the Wuhan -China 19 virus, COVID-19 , to the island, and the subsequent introduction by the Italians and Sri Lanka Italians who further introduced it? It is because of the underlying racism towards the Muslims, and the stupidity of the imbecile racists, who follow Para-Sinhala Para-Buddhism.

For the racists who, facts do not matter. They are looking for outliers, in support of their racist hypothesis. It is not evidence-based.

When Amarasiri says, the mean measured IQ of the Para imbeciles is 79, it is evidence based. Your article supports that.

For the racist imbeciles, racism overshadows everything. Ask the Tamils.

So, the anchor did not challenge, if 19 out of 170 are Muslims, the others must be non-Muslims, and furthermore the first was a Chinese who infected the locals. This was introduced by the foreigners, and the Govt was complacent, and they President Gon Gotabaya said on March 17, there was no problem, and wanted to have the elections on April 25th. No. Because he was racist.

      • 3
        5

        Amarasiri,
“For the racists who, facts do not matter.”

That is the reason why racists claimed North and East is their ‘Traditional Homeland’ ignoring the FACT that they are the descendants of slaves brought to Sinhale by colonial parasites after 1505.

My elders also shared me, we each should see it right if the world to be changed to the manner all would have been treated equally.
My elders also shared me, that srilanken MONKs from the ancient days on somewhat racial but people have kept them above from the day one.
Today the result is – I dont respect SRILANKEN monks, but I respect ELDERLY people and stray dogs… to whom I provide the DANA.. since that make me a sence.

            Desperate Sinhalaya,
“What happened to TAMILS that lived in the country for ages before the plantation tamils were brought by colonial masters into the country ?”

Demalu who lived before 1505 were remnants of invaders from Dravida Nadu. Before British brought Demalu for tea plantations, Portuguese and Dutch brought slaves from Malabar to Yapanaya to work in tobacco plantations. Present Demala people in Yapanaya are descendants of those slaves although they are categorized as ‘Sri Lankan Demala’

Demalu is Yapanaya look down upon Demalu in tea plantations.

Truth is a bitter pill to swallow!!!

              Quoted from SOURCE of literiture
              Invasions
Several invasions have been made against the Anuradhapura Kingdom, all of which were launched from South India. The first invasion recorded in the history of the country is during the reign of Suratissa (247–237 BC), where he was overthrown by two horse dealers from South India named Sena and Guththika. After ruling the country for 22 years, they were defeated by Asela (215–205 BC), who was in turn overthrown by another invasion led by a Chola prince named Elara (205–161 BC).[37] Elara ruled for 44 years before being defeated by Dutthagamani (Duttugamunu) [38] However, the Mahavamsa records that these foreign kings ruled the country fairly and lawfully.[37]
The country was invaded again in 103 BC by five Dravidian chiefs, Pulahatta, Bahiya, Panya Mara, Pilaya Mara and Dathika, who ruled until 89 BC when they were defeated by Valagamba. Another invasion occurred in 433, and the country fell under the control of six rulers from South India. These were Pandu, Parinda, Khudda Parinda, Tiritara, Dathiya and Pithiya, who were defeated by Dhathusena who regained power in 459.[39] More invasions and raids from South India occurred during the reigns of Sena I (833–853)[40] and Udaya III (935–938).[41] The final invasion during the Anuradhapura Kingdom, which ended the kingdom and left the country under the rule of the Cholas, took place during the reign of Mahinda V.[42]
However, none of these invaders could extend their rule to Ruhuna, the southern part of the country, and Sri Lankan rulers and their heirs always organized their armies from this area and managed to regain their throne. Throughout the history of Sri Lanka, Ruhuna served as a base for resistance movements.[19]

              to be continued.

              Blind eye

“Truth is a bitter pill to swallow!!!”
Do you know what it means ?
              This is true history
During the early historic period (6th century BC to 3rd century AD), Lanka/ilankai (as first mentioned in the Ramayana) was a part of South India separated by a shallow sea and was only a walking distance before the sea levels rose. Even today, one of the ancient bridges that was linking South India to Sri Lanka can be seen in the NASA shuttle images. During that period, irrespective of whether they were Yakkhas, Nagas, or any others, all these tribes were Saivaite Dravidians (devotees of Lord Siva, Saivaism is a sect of Hinduism/Brahmanism prevalent in Sri Lanka before Buddhism). The Naga tribe not only lived in both Sri Lanka and South India, but they were also moving back and forth between Sri Lanka and South India. All the ancient rulers of Sri Lanka before the arrival of Buddhism were also Saivaites (followers of Saiva Siddhantam). The Pali chronicles leave us in no doubt that the worship of Siva was prevalent in Anuradhapura and elsewhere in the island. The numerous occurrences of the personal name Siva in the Pali chronicles and in the early Brahmi inscriptions also support this. As per the Ramayana, even the Yaksha king Ravana was believed to be a Dravidian chieftain and a strong devotee of Lord Siva.

          Eagle Confused Eye,

“For the racists (who) facts do not matter.”

Science is evidence-based and reason-based. Racism is not.

“Believe nothing, no matter where you read it, or who said it, unless it agrees with your own reason” – Siddhartha Gautama.

          Is your reason evidence -based?

“The mind is everything. What you think, you become.” – Siddhartha Gautama.

Eagle Confused Eye, do you know Siddhartha Gautama? Or do you only know the saffron clad monks to whom you prostrate? Looks like the monks, who hijacked Siddhartha Gautama’s philosophy, distorted it and installed themselves as the 3rd Gem, is confusing you.

Civil Wars are known as not affecting to all but to some in very hit areas though others could also face some secondary.

But CORONA or EBOLA or the like VIRAL wars/crises, would not select anyone, but affect to all.
      .
Even more dangerous is the VERBAL statements that for example being repeatedly used by Mahindapala, a man in early 80ties, srilanken sinhalaya – once upon a time, this guy was reported to be an editor for a STATE new paper….latter could say all to you… how much our people have been racial..

      .
To my knowledge, as one who sensitively go through COMMENTs being added by Mr Mahindapala… I think his verbal attacks are penetraing than an Xray through your bio material… and consequences are the DEVISIONS.

When would these men be aware of their OWN damages ? eventually being repeated by them ?

Sensitive Lanken/my genetics is SINHALA srilanken but I dont attack anyone… born buddhist but not a SINHALA buddhist, but a buddhist going by TRUE teachings of lord buddha.

      Lankan,

The WuhanChina-19, COVID-19, has exposed furthermore, the underlying racism of the Para-Sinhala Para-“Buddhists “, that has been there since independence and before.

Was the COVID-19 virus sent by Nature’s God to expose the racism, and be egalitarian? The virus is very egalitarian, infects all humans , and even animals.

        Amarasiri,
“the underlying racism of the Para-Sinhala Para-“Buddhists “, that has been there since independence and before.”

What Native Sinhalayo have is not racism but hatred towards ‘Para’ invaders who invaded their country Sinhale 52 times since Third Century BC and completely destroyed the cradle of Sinhala Buddhist civilization in North and East of the country based on the cities Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa.
Before 1505, Native Sinhalayo managed to chase away ‘Para’ invaders but during colonial rule, they brought the enemy of Sinhalayo as slaves to Sinhale and abandoned them in this country. To make the situation worse, dumb Sinhala politicians gave citizenship to them. But, instead of been grateful to the kindheartedness of Native Sinhalayo, the descendants of slaves slaughtered Native Sinhalayo. So, what do you expect from Native Sinhalayo?

          .
I from my exp know that anyone would have hate speeches to an exceeding manner,.. it should be connected with his or her personal vendetta…. this was proved by Dayan Jaaythilaka. who has been suffering from SUPREMACY complex … whatever he has been drolling down… we perfectly know how the kind of mental inbalances could form…
Mahinda Rajakashes too is a man with FAKE profile. People in this country are far away from the knowledge about Mahinda and his brutal brothers.. and their mentalities.
Just becasue his term found the stop to the relay race of the CIVIL war, we should not PUT him above always… what Mahinda et al has been doing to this nation will not be repairable in this life. He is the mafia boss to have sowed the RACIAL seeds in this country. But punnakku drinking peoples are about to realize the real face of the MR today,

            Hatharabirikatharina,
“Who are these NATIVE sinhalayo ?”

Native Sinhalayo are people who evolved in this country from Homo Sapiens who lived in the southern part of the country 125,000 years ago and developed this country. Veddas also lived in this country with Sinhalayo for a long long time. All the others in Sri Lanka have their origin in a foreign land. That is why they are called ‘Para’ in Sinhala which means ‘Foreign’.

Native Tamils? Where, not in Sinhale. May be in Mars!

People who lived in America before Europeans colonized that country are called ‘Native Americans’.

The epigraph of this article reads in part: The “climate of hate and intimidation, created by a noisy few, which makes the decent majority” remain silent.

Time and again one reads of “the decent majority” and the vulgar, hate-filled minority but is this valid, particularly within an electoral system?

If the majority were decent, the minority wouldn’t get away with injustice and brutality.
Isn’t this an easy way of exculpation? Of fooling ourselves that, on the whole, we are a decent lot?

        Dear Bro Amarasiri,
I dont need to double check… i know from my circles how Racial our sinhalaya have been from the day one. We the srilankens living in Germany once got together for a WUS meeting (going back to mid 90ties). THere, some of our sinhalaya (so called royalists) behaved themselves as if they were superior to anyone else, just because they went to Royal college and … also the tamil candidates were looked down upon by them – telling me ” machan, our domestic servant women/men were always tamils”: Asked, why they feel like them to be superior than the others – their they attacked me as they would do at SRILANKEN universities (all being one side and cornering me), calling that I am a traitor to sinhala nation.
        :
Keeping all these in my mind, I left the country – years ago and spent my younger days in Europe.. still continue my life in Europe, but whenever I travel back home, I still have lot more problems also within my own big family -. there they call ” these muslims (thambiyas) are becoming a threat to srilanka … ” asked why… according to them, they let bred like rabbits would do. Most of the words my circles in SL would use are deregatory ones.. be it to Tamils OR Muslims. If I would argue with them, they just attack me, it is all that I consider me not as srilanken…. bla bla… and i may have been overwesternized … bla bla… This is a true story about me… Mr Amarasiri.. for me, what counts is the human way of living… i dont care what race, relgion anyone would belong/repsect…
        .
Even my sister, does not seem to know the BIG harm being made by Rajaapkshe to the own nation today … I only get angry looking at them.

” exculpation” that is the dominant form of hypocrisy practiced in Lankawe.

This is what from 1948 the Sinhala Intellectuals, the strange species of the Wildlife Sanctuary have done in Lankawe.

The child kidnappers, the parliamentarians and politicians, in every election give sweets (Racist propaganda) to the Sinhala Mass, and kidnap the child to use them in their own works get done.
In 2015, Ranil promised to reverse all Chinese contracts if he was selected. Then he sold the Hangbangtota to China. The estimated exchange rate at freedom is Rs 2.3 per dollar. It fell down to Rs 200 yesterday. This team was the one in a press meeting asked to give them the power so they can bring the dollar value lower.
Watch what happened to Lasantha, Eklinegoda and other journalists. They gave their life to save the media freedom. If it were in a developed country, there will be statues for these martyrs. After their demise, they might have been awarded many posterior Prizes for their services, by governments and organization. Now they are carrying unbearable crosses, called “Traitors of the Mother Lankawe” in their cemetery, by coward attacks on dead people by Sinhala Instinctual species.
It was Sinhala Intellectuals, the strange species, from 1948, see the victims, train the killers, send the killers, order the killers to kill; then they come out and claim that their land is Buddhagama land. The entire world now knows what a rogue nation Lankawe, the SinhaLE Wildlife Sanctuary is.
Unless a Sinhala Thirunavukkarasar is born in South, this land, the Wildlife Sanctuary, cannot be correct.

That is why we have been arguing the only redemption possible with in the sight for Tamils is going alone.

How Low the Politicians and Journalists in Sri Lanka had gone to? So far the guy – He is not fit to be called by his name. There are many others who have his name and have better morals. He has not made an apology.or even a lame excuse like the politico from Nawalapitiya had made.
The politico comes with a lame explanation. What has happened to our country? No one wants to take responsibility?
One of the other guys says that he went out for a toilet break and says this would not have happened if he was present. So there are two differences opinion from 2 politicians. Now who is right?
The matter of controversy is about the no morale journalist making a remark that he should be paid for bringing out the 20 new Covid 19 matter into focus. Its not about a segment of population breaking the law in curfew times.
This politician represent a party. Who is the leader of the party. Is it the guy who comes and goes from USA or his brother? I’m sure one of them has the guts to tell this guy to go home. Or the President himself be valiant enough to sack him. Where are the opposition parties? Why haven’t they made a noise. Oh sorry fellas, you worried about losing votes in the coming elections. Will it happen in this Banana Republic? Only time will tell.
Now to the TV channel owner What makes you stop sacking this idiot. of a chat show host? I’m sure most of the business owners on whom you rely on advertisement revenue are resits like your dumb idiot of a host and your Chanel is well equipped to have a better journalist than this guy.
    SO PLEASE CONSIDER.

It is sad that you cannot even see the fault here. Saying racist things in public is vile. Saying good things in public and racist things in private is just as vile. Such people are fakes and just as bad racists as those that say things openly. They just dont have the guts to say such things openly.

A true human being aims to be good at heart and mind. Not say such things in public and in private and not even think of such racist things in their minds. That is what religion teaches us and what the buddha taught. Cleanse ones mind of all the filth and hatred and join humanity.

It is unfortunate that these disgusting racist people, shout louder, when there are elections coming up. To impress the racists in the country, and get their vote, you have to act like the bigger racist, and demonize the voiceless minority, knowing that vicious mobs can turn on them, causing harm, violence, and even death. The personnel of this racist television station, and politicians ,were caught doing what they always do, but now caught red handed for the entire world to see. Shouldn’t they be ashamed?

They have spread hate, and unfounded accusations, against the minority, and destroyed the good name of a doctor, and destroyed his life and livelihood. What kind of low down scum are they? That man is a Sri Lankan, and an asset to the people in his area. They are demonizing the minority for their political gain, and to increase the hatred for the minority, by spreading fake news. The racist channel of Sri Lanka.

This station should be boycotted, and treated like pariahs. They are partly responsible for the ethnic tensions, division, and this country never healing the religious divide.
They don’t seem to care all that hinders progress in our nation.

Its sad to see how uncivilized we Sri Lankans are! If these statements were shown on any TV in any developed country the persons involved would have been fired and the MP would have been forced to resign from the post and the party. In Sri Lanka we have not seen a single word from the Prime Minister who is the head of Pohottuwa, President another member of Pohottuwa ( he said so in a TV interview), Keheliya the spokes person of Pohottuwa or even the leader of UNP Ranil, leader of the opposition Sajith or the speaker Karu. The Prince of Power Namal who has so much to say in his tweets – no sound. This also includes the Mahanayakes, Cardinal, Moulavies, and Hindu Priests. What a shameful country are we living in.

Just so that it is clear, unlike the Buddhists monks, Christian or Catholic cardinals/bishops etc., or Islamic Maulanas, the role of Hindu priests is confined to the performing of spiritual rituals to the deities either at the temples or at auspicious events/occasions on invitation. As priests, their’s is not to get involved in any other sphere of life of a devotee, it is purely a spiritual role.

No politician will venture to say anything on this issue because elections are around the corner. They count numbers and unfortunately at this point of time, siding with the Sinhala majority is the better bet to get more votes going by the previous election results.
These idiotic politicians do not know that they, by their actions, are pushing this country for another civil unrest. We need to be united, especially at a time like this. If there is a politician, who can speak, from his heart with genuine interest, in support of the minorities but at the same time, reassure the Sinhala majority, that politician will someday take this country towards prosperity.

This is a deeply mischievous and calculated attempt to fan racial tensions. The said TV clip was no accident. Think about it ! why would somebody internally release this clip at Derana. He would have got caught and dismissed. It came with the full sponsorship of its management who represent the interest of one political party.

With an election looming ahead of us and 2/3rds majority being the target the Rajapakse machinery that manufactures and thrives on racism is at work. Those ultra nationalists who claim they want a United Sri Lanka actually cause the divisions we all don’t want. They are the ones who give terrorists a cause to rise. The LTTE was the sole creation of the “Sinhala Only” era which manifested uncontrollably for 30 years. Why are we allowing a minority of Sinhala ultra nationalists control the destiny of this beautiful country.

The true Sinhala, Tamil, Muslim and burgers are beautiful communitIes with cultures that enrich the fabric of Sri Lankan society. I plead ?with my fellow countryman please don’t let this happen again. Do whatever is politically right to get your 2/3rd majority but don’t use the hapless minority as bait for the larger community to bite and for filthy politicians like Mahidanada Aluthhamage to feast on.

When the sacrifices take the goat to temple’s altar to cuts its head, they load its neck with beautiful garland made with flowers and exotic leaves. The ignorant goat, which had seen something not seen earlier, greedily falls on that garland and enjoys it hastily. In few minutes it will be its head that falls down.

Sadly every Sinhala Buddhist Modaya and Sinhala Intellectual are well aware (unlike the ignorant goat) what is about to come after the election (if there will be one). But now they are standing on tables and desks high and shouting the truth of their prophecy of predicting the dictator’s excellent ability to control the Covid-9. Is this sad status is because this race was ruled for 500 years by external forces and their blood’s DNA lost the feeling for true self-rule? From where did this extreme feeling to praise a dictator’s act in precarious time like is coming to this crowd?
What a shame for the Modaya Society to thinking that the entire world is using some dictators only to control the Covid-19 and those who are not being wiped out of the earth. Why these ignorant mass have not so far come to know that the creation and imagination, the rewards for the freedom, gained by self-rule, are biggest weapons to fight against deadly enemies like Covid-19?

This scandalous DERONA incident only confirms the well-known fact that the public persona of politicians and media stars are fake projections designed to deceive the people, while they reveal their true selves only when off-microphone, off camera, off the record – in private. Sometimes they screw-up their playbook, their game plan by not making sure the switches were turned off at the right time. I’m sure no Sri Lankan with even an iota of human decency can remain undisturbed by the extreme callousness and cruelty of the comments made by a cabinet minister and a prominent media figure on prime time national TV targeting/scapegoating a section of our country’s victims of a world wide pandemic caused by a new virus still mostly mysterious to the scientists. More developed countries are rushing to do all what they can to alleviate the suffering of the afflicted. But here in the compassionate Buddhist Sri Lanka we’re trying to score points by vilifying them. In those countries such disgusting racist hate speech would’ve been punished by immediate firing. But here the two vipers are allowed to continue with their dangerously destructive roles in fomenting racist violence in the country. We, as a nation, have hit rock bottom – and this is much worse than COVID-19.

    Dear Sarath,
What good or noble deeds can you or anyone expect from this generation of Buddhist hypocrites like these imbeciles? Hell with whatever they preach or claim to adhere. This is far from Buddhism that I have practiced. BTW Mr De Alwis, I need to correct you that “Dharanee” is not at all Sinhala. It is Sanskrit and found in the Vedha, and also Jainism. The Sinhalasized word is Dherana (the root is Dhe’ruhna). Also I don’t mean to point fingers at any other faith or ethnicity. But the Muslims in Nawalapitiya were behaving recklessly during this lockdown. I know this for a fact because several of the my friends who are Muslims also shared the same sentiments and truth. We all detest these kind of Mahindananda or Chatira type of bigots who incite racism. We certainly must fight this war, as much vigor as we fight the Coronna virus.

WGR, you are absolutely right, the origin of the word ‘dharanee’ is not Sinhala!

Even “Vithura ” is not a Sinhalese name as you should know. It is a character in the Mahabharata.

Appreciate if you can kindly get some information about Eight Muslim families living in Obesekerapura who have returned from piligrigame and are quarantined and the area is now under lock down, I am aware of ObesekraPura having quite a large number of Muslims.
If this is true we will have a huge problem to face , this is a massive number of people and am going to be very angry if it’s true , they need to be sued if its true , they have to be total idiots if they are guilty ,
it seems they just did not care .
    Thank you

What is the big deal about a little banter between the Host and the Guest during a Commercial break?..
After all Aluthgamage didn’t say Muslims brought the Corona VD to Lankawe.
All he said was the Muslims have the highest infection rate.

Did Dr Alwis get upset when Prez Trump told us that Corona is a Chinese decease and the Chinese manufactured it and sent to the rest ?.

UNP Yahalana Rulers and their Tamil and Muslim allies are now desperately trying to recall the Parliament and get their perks back .

And most of all, to go around in their old Defenders with full STF and Police guards to their Electorates to canvass some votes under the pretext of fighting the Corona Virus..

I saw one of them or their supporters on TV telling us that Americans , British and Europeans are pouring in Money to Lankawe to help the Corona victims .
And alleging that Mr Basil Rajapakasa is in charge of all that money.

May be they want to take charge of that Kitty from the West and put the spanner in the works of Prez Nandsena and his Army & Police Boys massive efforts to protect the poor Inhabitants from those Jet Setters who brought in the Virus.

BTW wonder how much money those Western Countries have poured in so far?. .

May be Chatura can call that Dude and ask him at a Vadapitiya….

Because Chathra has done more Charity work in Lankawe than any of those Dudes in Kotte , including the ones who collected up to LKR 34 Million free money from those Car Permits under Yahapalanay …..

What would say if a Hakeem jokingly said “100% Sinhalese and Buddhists teenage girls suffer from Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) including HIV/AIDS, Gonorrhea, Syphilis, Chlamydia, …. ?

You distant cousin Modi sent some medicine to which both clan members Gota and Mahinda thanked him. Many thought Sinhala/Buddhist fascists are too proud to receive medicine, advice, funds, aids, ….security … from toiletless Hindia.

How come shameless single handed leaders and generals are letting their proud people down?

Ethnic hatred is embedded in a particular group of Singhala politicians, for example, the OMI ( Open Mouth Idiot) Weerwansa and a few others like him. They are more dangerous than COVID19. This ethnic hatred virus invented and used along with COVID 19. targeting a particular ethnic group. This virus along with the blessings of the President is used as an add on target particular community. We had the Eelam war, then the Tsunami and then Easter Sunday attack and the floods every destruction was used politically to amass wealth by Mahinda dynasty. The country is moving towards destruction through these two viruses. The people should punish the inventors of second virrus ANETV20 ( AtTi EThnicVirus 20).

Well, i must say firstly, that I am not a racist. But it is the Muslim community that changed over a very short period, from being Sri Lankan to Arab, although I still have Muslim friends from school that never changed. This is the price they have to pay for trying to be different and alone.
I suppose their lifestyle does not suit the WHO guidelines.
Yesterday, being an important Poya day, no Buddhist visited temples. Why cannot the Muslims be the same and abide by the current requirements in a time of crisis?
I am no fan of the crude way in which the views were presented, but sometimes the truth must be told and truth does heart.

      Love SRILANKA,
      .
Please dont refer it as SRILANKEN muslims, whenver single issues would have been high lighted in srilanka. There is a media mafia going on in that part of the globe – in favour of Rajapakshe rascals. This is finely adjusted for their polöitical missteps.
One day or other, the very same audience will have to see it right.
But then, the harm being done by FALSE PROPAGANDA would have been than all together the mess created by COVID 19 to the world.

Police statistics show that the number of arrests since March 20 stands at 19,441 since curfew restrictions were imposed due to COVID – 19.

According to the police, 496 vehicles were also seized over the last 24 hours, bringing the tally of the total vehicles seized since March 20 upto 5082.

      Love Sri Lanka
Tell us those if those who were arrested for curfew violations were Muslims and their motor vehicles follow Islam?

This fellow Mahindananda has a foul mouth worse than a sesspit and stinks for miles when he utters his most despicable statements. He and the TV anchor who is trying to show he is an authority of COVID 19 are playing games at the expense of a minority community who is contributing to the advancement of Sri Lanka’s national economy in a very significant way during these trying periods. Why is the President silent on such statements that will promote racial and religious strife in Sri Lanka in the future?

Almost one year ago , the same tactics were used to brand anybody who spoke out against the massacres that took place as being racist . What was said on Derana was that 19 of the 20 identified patients were of “that’ community , and that it was very difficult to make ‘them’ understand the gravity of the situation . Thankfully , “they” seem to have stopped their walkabouts including travels by boat , and the spread in “those” enclaves appears to be under control – reducing the risk to “their” own community and the country at large .

One wonders why a seemingly educated man from the suburbs of Colombo would want into the Cancer Hospital Maharagama seeking treatment for symptoms of a common cough and cold . His action had reportedly caused several members of the specially trained staff including a doctor to go into isolation for two weeks .
