The Naked Saviours

By Tisaranee Gunasekara

“‘But he hasn’t got anything on,’ a little child said.” ~ Hans Christian Anderson (The Emperor’s New Clothes)

Mythic Inflation is a concept introduced by American mythologist Joseph Campbell to explain the emergence of a new kind of ruler, the secular king who is also the divinely mandated saviour of the land/people. In this non-hieratic tyrant state, “The role of the monarch, gained by human means, is represented as a manifestation of the will and the grace of the creator and supporter of the universe” (Occidental Mythologies).

After the victorious conclusion of the long Eelam War, a similar redefinition of Rajapaksa rule was attempted in Sri Lanka. Mahinda Rajapaksa was hailed as the king sent from on high with a mandate from the four brahmas to unite the land. Actor Jackson Anthony, in his role as tele-historian, provided a family tree for the Rajapaksas that stretches back to the Buddha by way of King Dutugemunu. If Gotabaya Rajapaksa becomes the SLPP presidential candidate (California Central District Court and US State Department permitting), he too will don this apocryphal mantle, depicting himself as the Buddha’s relative and the chosen one of the gods.

Gotabaya Rajapaksa spent the last four and a half years building his own support base. Through organisations such as Viyathmaga (The Intellectual Way) and Eliya (The Light), he has sought to gain a measure of political and organisational autonomy from his brothers. He cannot win the presidency without the unstinting support of Mahinda and Basil Rajapaksa. But if he becomes the executive president, he is unlikely to act as a mere cipher of Mahinda Rajapaksa. On the contrary, the next few years would be characterised by sibling rivalry and conflict as President Gotabaya and PM Mahinda, plus their respective cohorts, wives and sons, battle with each other for power and influence.

Mahinda Rajapaksa’s awareness of these future dangers might explain his reluctance to crown brother Gotabaya as his heir. Another reason for this reluctance could be his concerns about the political future of his eldest son. Namal Rajapaksa will be old enough to contest the 2024/5 presidential election. If Gotabaya Rajapaksa becomes the next executive president, the chances of him stepping aside in five years and gifting the candidacy to his nephew would be less than zero. He would want a second term, and he too has a son.

Mahinda Rajapaksa might be reluctant to crown his brother, but he seems unable to resist the increasingly vocal and public pressure from the Gotabaya camp. The lure of the presidency shattered the Sirisena-Wickremesinghe administration. The lure of the presidency is also creating fissures in the Rajapaksa clan. If Gotabaya Rajapaksa gains the presidency, inter-familial rivalry will become the new normal and a permanent source of instability.

Gotabahya’s Advent and Sajith’s Dream

As the citizenship status of Gotabaya Rajapaksa hangs in the balance, his supporters are on a mission, trying to portray him as a hero who is sacrificing foreign honours to save and serve Mother Lanka. A case in point is an internet poster by Viyath Maga containing a picture of Gotabaya Rajapaksa and a kaviya, written in the style of S Mahinda Thero. “When the merit-laden Motherland wants (me), why do I need the citizenship of another country?” the kaviya asks rhetorically. “I will abandon all honours and will return Mother, to (undertake) the endeavour of protecting you.”

Gotabaya Rajapaksa received no honours in the US; he was just an ordinary immigrant who worked hard and made good, like millions of others. He gained his American citizenship by paying taxes, sitting for exams, renouncing his links to his birth-land and swearing sole allegiance to the US. The only reason he is giving up that hard-earned citizenship, rather unwillingly, is because he must.

As his supporters hail Gotabhigamanaya (the advent of Gotabaya), it is apposite to wonder why this man, who is painting himself in the colours of lion, take early retirement from the army (probably on a full pension). Why did he abandon Mother Lanka for Uncle Sam when the Second Eelam War was raging? When the question was asked from him, the man of destiny blamed his wife. I didn’t want to do it, he said; she made me do it.

This blame-the-wife retelling is contained in an article appropriately titled, Ayoma wins the day (The Island – 30.6.2013). Based on an interview with Mr. Rajapaksa, the article goes to painful lengths to convince the reader of Gotabaya’s innocence and Ayoma’s guilt. When Lt. Col. Rajapaksa succumbed to his wife’s demands and decided to leave the army, everyone who’s anyone in the military establishment tried to make him change his mind. The then defence minister Ranjan Wijeratne even flew to Weli Oya to offer the Lt. Colonel a transfer away from operation duties. The offer was rejected. The Lt. Colonel, who was planning to retire from the army and leave the country, claimed that all he wanted to “to serve with his battalion, wherever it was deployed.”

Minister Wijeratne clearly saw through the sentimental hype. He appointed Lt. Col. Rajapaksa as the Deputy Commandant of the Kotalawala Defence Academy. The Lt. Colonel was in this safe enclave (where his battalion was, the article doesn’t tell), when Minister Wijeratne was killed by the LTTE in the heart of Colombo. As the article says, “Shortly after Minister Wijeratne’s assassination, Lt. Col Rajapaksa sent in his retirement papers.”

The article also mentions the names of several superiors of Lt. Col. Rajapaksa who played supporting roles in this saga. Most of them were killed by the LTTE when Gotabaya Rajapaksa was treading the path to American citizenship in the safe haven of California.

The beautification of Gotabaya Rajapaksa by his acolytes is as superficial as the beautification of Colombo by Gotabaya Rajapaksa. The focus is on optics; splash the paint and spread the glitter. The end result is easier on the eye, though underneath the shine, the beast is the same.

When Marianne David, Senior Editor of The Daily FT, complained about the harassment women are subject to in public places, the denizens of Gotabaya-land went into twitter-hysterics. Viyathmaga accused Ms. David of shaming Sri Lanka in the eyes of the world and impeding the recovery of tourism. Retired admiral Mohan Wijewickrama, a Gotabaya-acolyte, told Ms. David, “Please leave this country. You do not belong here.” (Economy Next – 11.7.2019).

Mr. Wijewickrama’s Trumpian rant brings to mind an even more dangerous statement made by another Gotabaya-acolyte, retired general Kamal Gunaratne. Speaking at a Viyathmaga seminar in October 2017, Mr. Gunaratne branded as traitors anyone supporting a new constitution. He went on to claim that these traitors deserve death, and must be denied normal funeral rites, as the JVP notoriously did during the Second Insurgency.

These two incidents clearly forewarn what Sri Lanka will become under a Gotabaya presidency, a place of absolute and violent intolerance. Anyone incurring the ire of the saviour-president and his acolytes will be silenced, one way or the other.

Sajith Premadasa wants the UNP candidacy as much as Gotabaya Rajapaksa wants the SLPP candidacy. But while Gotabaya Rajapaksa makes no secret of his ambitions, Sajith Premadasa is rather coy about his.

Politics of entitlement and familial politics were anathema to Ranasinghe Premadasa. His son’s preferences seem antipodal. “I have been ready and working to take the country’s leadership from the day of birth,” Sajith Premadasa is quoted saying, after highly symbolic meetings with the chief prelates of Asgiriya and Malwatte (Lankadeepa – 23.7.2019). When asked about the UNP’s candidacy, he turned evasive. According to him what is on his mind is not the presidential election but how to build 1123 chaithyas (ibid).

Sajith Premadasa clearly believes that the masses are asses. Why else would he say that he is not thinking of the presidential election? Moreover, if he believes that building 1123 chaithyas is the need of the hour, he knows nothing of the state of Sri Lanka and the problems of her people. If Sri Lanka has a surfeit of anything other than corrupt and ignorant politicians, it is religious edifices.

Sajith Premadasa’s statement also reveals that he intends to use the religious card to gain the UNP’s candidacy and to win the presidency. Pandering to religion as a strategy would be both unprincipled and unintelligent. It will worsen the country’s ethno-religious divide, and help rather than hinder Rajapaksa victory. When it comes to ethno-religious politics Rajapaksas are peerless and unbeatable. It is their preserve, and anyone battling them on that field cannot but lose.

Irrespective of the identity of its candidate, the UNP’s failures will haunt the party come election time. Where was the UNP when the chief prelate of the Asgiriya chapter indirectly supported the stoning of all Lankan Muslims? Why is the UNP allowing the ACJU to scuttle MMDA reforms, again? Why is the UNP silent about the unjust incarceration of the young Sinhala-Buddhist writer, Shakthika Sathkumara, for writing a short story critical of a fictional Buddhist monk? How will the UNP explain the state’s inability to successfully prosecute the Trinco 5 case? Does the UNP think that by pandering to extremists, it can win electoral salvation? Doesn’t it understand that failing to stand up for the values of its core-supporters amounts to a radical loss of intelligent self-interest, a path not to victory but to self-inflicted defeat?

The Road to Impasse

Abolishing the executive presidency was the foundational pledge of the oppositional alliance that defeated the Rajapaksa behemoth in 2015. The failure to honour that promise has placed in jeopardy every single achievement of the Sirisena-Wickremesinghe administration, notably the partial advances made in democratic restoration and establishment of the rule of law. These advances are significant, but fragile. They require space to take root and time to grow. But Sri Lanka is unlikely to have that space and time as the administration’s many failures reopen the door to Rajapaksa rule.

Had the government honoured another of its signature promises and achieved some success in redefining political culture, the bar for potential candidates for the presidency could have been set a little higher. Thanks to the duplicity, venality, cowardice and inefficiency of the current administration, any two-bit character, from politicians to retired soldiers, from entrepreneurs to tuition masters, can present himself as a candidate.

Just a couple of months ago, businessman Dhammika Perera was being touted as a possible ‘Common Candidate’ backed by the UNP. Hayles Free Zone, the company at the centre of the garbage importation scandal, is a subsidiary of the Hayles Group of which Mr. Perera is the majority shareholder and non-executive chairman. This is not the first time a Hayles subsidiary has been caught devastating the environment in search of a quick buck. In 2013, another Hayles subsidiary, Dip Products PLC, was at the centre of the Rathupaswala tragedy. The company was reportedly responsible for the contamination of ground water in 28 grama niladhari divisions. When the affected residents protested peacefully, the Rajapaksa administration responded by sending the army. Three people died and many were injured when the army shot at the protestors. What the fate of the country will be if such a businessman obtains the powers of presidency isn’t hard to imagine.

In the run up to the last presidential election the dominant consensus was pro-democratic, non-racist, progressive and secular. Today the dominant consensus seems to be pro-dictatorial, majoritarian supremacist, regressive and quasi-hieratic. The present moment is characterised by a strong love affair with the idea of the good tyrant. So we have a leading Buddhist prelate exhorting Gotabhaya Rajapaksa to ‘even be like Hitler.’ We also have Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith’s repeated broadsides against democracy and human rights. Clearly the Cardinal is a throwback to the pre-Vatican II era, when Pope Pius XI signed the Lateran Accords with Benito Mussolini and Cardinal Pirelli (the future Pope Pius XII) sought and won a Condorcet with Adolf Hitler. Since the Cardinal also seems to believe the crazy Divaina story that the Easter Sunday massacre was an international conspiracy and the IS leader is being held in an American camp, one can only surmise he knows not what he says.

As the government’s many failures are being equated with failures of democracy, the myth of the strong leader is regaining political traction. Saviours emerge from behind every bush, and under every rock offering salvation to an electorate that is too disenchanted or angry to be rational. When politicians, businessmen, retired military-men, and religious leaders sing the song of the strong leader, their aim is to return the country to a time when rulers could break every law and norm, commit crimes and make mistakes and yet don the mantle of infallibility. Because none would be free to say the Emperor is naked.

Yes the American Citizen Rajapassa Saviors of Lanka!
The US game with their puppet Bondscam Ranil on one side and the US citizens Jarapassa brothers on the other in the Fake Reconciliation -UNP-SLFP bi-partisan Corruption racket brokered by US fake “experts and advisors” is; Heads I Win, tails you Lose”. JVPs KD is corrupt to the hilt as is Sumanthiran from TNA also on the US bandwagon to turn Lanka into a colony and Military base.
Either way, whether US puppet Ranil or US citizen Gota wins Sri Lankans are screwed.

            Tisaranee,

It’s a good piece …….. except ……. I believe Rajapakse sibling rivalry is oversold. If past history is any guide, they were all united in crime the last time they were at the helm. Why not this time?

Anyway, they are more united than the UNP ……. and all the other forces that will stand against them.

But one thing none of you see or suspect ……… Basil is already planning a referendum to be carried out, once in power, to perpetuate the dynasty for generations ……..

Unfortunately the only 2 people who have even a half a chance of stopping them are Sajith and Fonseka

Not the best for the country ………. but the only saving grace is they are not Rajapakses. ………

The 70-year long curse continues ………………

      Thanks for the article.

“‘But he hasn’t got anything on his brain ,’ a little intelligent child said.” and he is a Para-Sinhala Para-“Buddhist” moron, deceiving other morons and is an Insult to Buddhism and to the Buddha.

Even though the mean IQ is 79, do the other morons deserve it?

A land of Para-morons, a land like no other, where the morons prostate to imbecilic moron monks, who keep fooling the morons, mean IQ 79, that they will get to Nibbana or Nirvana, if they feed the imbecilic monks, a Dana, a food offering after they are dead.

Little they know that they will either rot in the graves to be consumed by the microorganisms, or oxidized if burned and dispersed in the atmosphere , and contribute to to global warming.

        Amarasiri,
“ No definite association of the Sinhalese with any specific ethnic or linguistic groups of India was, however, detected in this study”
Why? Because the Para-Sinhala comprises the gene pool from a very wide of India, East India, Bengal Orissa Bihar Andra Pradesh , South India, and West India, due to admixtures, and cannot identify the Para-Sinhala gene pool “soup mixture” with a specific linguistic or ethnic group

        There are two possibilities:
        1. Sinhalayo lived in many places in India with diverse groups of people and moved to Sinhale.
        2. Native Sinhalayo got mixed with wide range of people.
The first one is very unlikely. The second one is more plausible because unlike Veddas who were backward and remained in caves following hunting and gathering dynamic Sinhalayo developed the economy and converted Sinhale to a trading hub. There are evidences to show that people from many places in the world came to Sinhale as traders and they might have married Sinhala women. Furthermore, ‘Para Demalu’ who invaded Sinhale raped Sinhala women. These facts might have contributed to admixture.

Sinhalayo became smarter because of admixture. That is why Sinhalayo managed to beat ‘Para Demalu’ every time they tried to colonize Sinhale.

          Eagle Eye,

“ No definite association of the Sinhalese with any specific ethnic or linguistic groups of India was, however, detected in this study”

However, the Sinhala and Tamils are Paras in the Land of Native Veddah Aethho, proven by mtDNA genetics.

This is linguistic association, when Para-Sinhala o an admixture of Para-Tamils and other Paras from India. A mule is neither a horse or nor a donkey.

The haplogroup frequency of Vedda people from each site is shown
in Supplementary Table S7. Low frequency of M haplogroup and high
frequencies of R and U haplogroups were found to be the unique
characteristics of Vedda. However, the frequencies of these haplo-
groups varied among Vedda from different sites.

Through a comparison with the mtDNA HVS-1 and part of HVS-2 of Indian database, both Tamils and Sinhalese clusters were affiliated with Indian subcontinent populations than Vedda people who are believed to be the native population of the island of Sri Lanka.

You are going back to the same article again and again when Ranaweera et al. have concluded that:
“No definite association of the Sinhalese with any specific ethnic or linguistic groups of India was, however, detected in this study; thus, their exact immediate origin on the mainland remains yet to be confirmed.”

Who are these Sri Lankan Tamils? All Tamils in Sri Lanka are Indian origin.

Abstract- Sri Lanka’s indigenous people, the Veddas (forestdwellers), have inhabited Sri Lanka’s monsoon dry forest for at least 16,000 years and probably much longer. Hunting and gathering was their main means of living. Accordingly their foods were meat, birds, eggs, honey, fish, fruit, and vegetables

                Amarasiri,
You are referring to a Research Proposal on “The Veddas’, the Indigenous people of Sri Lanka, attitude on cultural heritage identification after relocation from their forest homeland” by Sasni Amarasekera.
Sasni Amarasekera looks like a Sociologist who lacks knowledge on latest research on this subject based on Archeological findings. Latest research shows with scientific evidences that both Vedda and Sinhalayo are native people.

A panel of experts have revised the History text book for Grade 10 students including latest findings. Demala students also will have to learn this new history of Sinhale. Amarasiri’s history is out of date.

                  Eagle Eye,

The research proposal gives several references at the end of the article, in support of the abstract statement on the Vedda as well.

This support is separate from the mt DNA evidence of other independent researchers.

The Sun rises from the East and sets in the West. What does it mean? The Sun goes around the Earth, as the ancient Greeks and the Catholic Church claimed, or that it is the Earth that is spinning on its own axis, as Copernicus claimed, supported by Galileo and Kepler?

One needs intelligence, IQ, to sort these issues including the data on mt-DNA, human genetics and migrations.

Prof. Raj Somadeva is an archeologist, not a scientist, a geneticist or a molecular biologist. Remember, the mean IQ of Sri Lankan’s is 79. Even 2 SDs, 109, will generally not cut it.

                    Amarasiri,
References given by the researcher Sasni Amarasekera is very old. Most of them are from Sociologists, Anthropologists and Geographers. The latest is in 1997. Lots of things have happened in this field since 1997. In early days, historians relied only on documented information but later attention was given to archeological findings and folklore.

Studies on Human Genetics may find affiliations between different groups but such affiliations cannot be used to make conclusions on origin without further evidences. That is the reason why Ranaweera et. al. made a sensible conclusion:
“No definite association of the Sinhalese with any specific ethnic or linguistic groups of India was, however, detected in this study; thus, their exact immediate origin on the mainland remains yet to be confirmed.”

Like the dumb Americans who believe that the sun goes around the earth, you too believe that Sinhalayo are ‘Para’ although a panel of experts have accepted Sinhalayo are not ‘Para’ based on latest research findings and decided to revise history books.

What is the IQ and intelligence level of those “experts” . The mean IQ of the Paras is 79. Wimal Buruwansa says 2/2 =0.

A panel of Greek experts, Aristotle and Ptolemy plus Roman Catholic Experts said that the Sun goes around the Earth. Even now 25% of the Americans and more than 50% of the Paras believe that.

The “expert” Archaeology Prof. Raj Somadeva, says that the Sun will go off in 2300 years when it runs out of Helium.

Agree that cultural heritage and archaeological findings are not definite support that it belongs to Vedda, Para-Sinhala or Para-Tamils. The best is mt-DNA data that traces the ancestry to the mothers. The genetic distances, clearly show that the Native Vedda Aethho are different from the Paras.

So far none of the presidential hopes from SLPP, SLFP, UNP have come of with policies about solving the problems faced by the people such as Economy, devolution or power sharing, rule of law, justice, corruption and foregin policy. SLPP propagnada is about Terrorism which they said they eradicated in 2009 and 19th amendment, and against anti American and anti Indian slogans. SLFP and UNP are suffering from directions to create policies unable to face alternatives to SLPP’s violent propaganda. So far, no one is prepared to say that Rule os law is equal to all citizens of Srilanka irrespective of race, religion, language, and gender. Will any one come up with a policy to provide this assurance in the coming election?

All major parties are like damaged vinyl records. Going round-and-round sounding ghastly and driving the whole republic dysfunctional. We need to throw the whole lot – including the record player – out of the window – and shut the window.

It is in this backdrop Nagananda seems to be playing some new kind of music – Rage Music (or Outrage Music). Naga rocks down South. I think he will rock all over soon.

Agree that problems with the economy, rule of law, justice, corruption and foreign policy should be the quest for the next government. However there is no justification for devolution or power sharing in a small island nation already burdened with too many tiers of governance. LTTE terrorists were eradicated but their supporting kith and kin still (the Tamil Diaspora abroad – asylum seekers) have still not given up their Eelam dreams. 19th amendment was a complete failure. It was MR’s mistake that he allowed the 13th amendment (Indian amendment to Sri lanka constitution) to remain. Yes one law for all – No ‘Thesavalam’ or Muslim laws in the country.

        Lanka,
It is wrong to say there is no justifation fordevolution of power sharing in this island. Devolution of power sharing was in practice in Srilanka before the invasion of the European to this island. The current provincial system of nine provinces may be unnecessary but the cost of the ansence of devolution of power (unitary State system) was very high and still it costs lot to this island. Over 200, 000 innocent lives lost unnecssarily, the cost of miliatry exapnded exponentially, corruption and absence of rule of law and collapse of justice system and the recent bomb blast are results of unitray system. Infact, the majority of Sinhalese (over 90%) are the loosers of unitary system.

Genocide of Eezham Tamils, Sinhalisation and Buddisidation of Northeast continue briskly and swiftly, timed for next accounting of UNHRC.

With Hindian sponsoring at UNHRC, the Island will become Sinhala ghetto.

Then the fun will start for Hindians, which will end up with Hindian funeral.

MR and co have already destroyed their political reputation and good will. MR made some trouble mistakes in his second term.. Now, it all in public. He must have retired with respect.. Now, he is working for his sons and family and yet, people do not like to establish family rule in SL. all dirty works of his friends are out there so, it is impossible for him to come back to power. so, it would be good for him retire with respect Rather than tarnishing his name.

Both may not get the presidential nominations from the two parties.
Mahinda won’t give it because of his son.
Ranil won’t give it to anyone which will result him loosing the party leadership ( biggest headache in Sri Lanka politics and probably will be the leader of unp until he dies).
So probably we may see an unexptected duo making a new party to contest.

With all the mistakes MR is still the peoples choice! Today you owe your existence to MR and to armed forces personnel. If a father does not work for his family there is something wrong with that person. MR will come back to power and he will retire once he has established the well being of the Sri lankan people.

In the end whoever comes to power they will once again successfully, fool the common Modaya’s with their charm and only claim that they ended the war. Their sole objective would be to grab power and loot and pillage this country. Nothing but misery awaits. This country is doomed and in desperate need of a miracle, however, the miracle we all hope for ain’t in the form, of Sirisena, Ranil, MR, GR or anyone else.

One noteworthy statement in the article caught my attention and that deserves an analysis – “SAJITH PREMADASA BELIEVES THAT THE MASSES ARE ASSES”. Why identify Sajith the only one to be of that “THINKING”? ALL of the present announced and unannounced contenders THINK THE MASSES ARE ASSES. Make no mistake about it. Of the candidates already supposed to be lined up, “GOTA” is yet to be “NAMED” by “ONE SINGLE INDIVIDUAL” and he is “Mahinda Rajapakse”. That “Camp” called “SLPP” (Pohottuwa) has “PLEDGED” and taken an “OATH” that any person to be named by “Maharajah” MR would be “Accepted”, “Honoured” and even the eldest of the “Maharaja Family” – Chamal has asked everyone to “Accept” that person unequivocally. That is nothing NEW of their understanding and practice of “Democracy”. In short that “DICTATORSHIP” of “Hitler Type” is already established. Of all other “REST” contenders , excepting Naganada Kodithuwakku who goes about “Barking” like a “mad dog” haven’t presented the country with any of their “PLANS” or even seem to understand the gravity of the situation the country is faced with, because all of them KNOW and KNOW VERY WELL (not believe as the writer had stated) that the MASSES ARE ASSES. The only solution to this problem is to let the MASSES be well informed of that “THINKING” of the contenders and their supporters.

As usual, Tisaranee’s analysis of the current political situation & the ‘presidential stakes’ is superb.
Sajith appears to be prone to commit hara-kiri with his proposed 1123 ‘chaithiyas’.
Else, he is a good candidate.
‘Power hunger’ brings out the best and worst in every candidate.
I pray that a candidate who will reign rather than rule – like the Queen, after abolishing the ‘executive presidency’, will win – and, that the cabinet will be pruned to below 10 to 15 members.

justice, My observation of your post leads to, in random order,
      – Pruned to below 10 or below 15 members. Make up your mind.
      – How did you come to think that Sajith is a good candidate? If you believe that he is, apologise to Tisaranee!
      – Now that you want a candidate to ‘reign’ not -the layman’s term for rather than- rule, you are canvassing for Gota, do you realise that?

In my humble opinion, TG, gota is a bloody opportunist!
If he loves this country so much, then why does he keep his US citizenship?
Shouldn’t he damn the consequences and choose a side?
To me gota is a brut who has no backbone. What do you call such people ‘ bullies ‘ right. He is a bully.
Gota is not refined, educated nor pious.
He is just a bloody hypocrite who thinks that he can fool our public all the time. I don’t think it will work.
Divide and rule, ethno-religious tactics have a limit.

      Another excellent article, Tisaranee.
And, Gemini Cricket, re: Gota: “If he loves this country so much, then why does he keep his US citizenship?”
Absolutely, G ! He wants to have his cake & eat it. Either he should commit himself wholeheartedly to the country he aspires to govern, or he should admit that he is now first & foremost a US citizen & that’s where his primary loyalties lie.
When I came to SL for the 2nd time (1975), it was with a rather idealistic (naïve?) intention to be fully committed to this country, throw in my lot with it, for good or ill. I had to find employment (maintenance) quickly, but I was a British citizen from birth & the first job I was offered (as a local employee in an international organization) required me to be a Ceylon (at that time) citizen. Dual Citizenship wasn’t allowed here then, so I was forced to renounce my British citizenship & apply for Sri Lankan. I wasn’t overjoyed to do that, having travelled very freely with that passport, but it was Ceylon or Britain — You cant be true to two”, as the song goes. I even had to pay a fee at the High Commission when I surrendered my passport.
Once dual nationality was permitted here, I wondered about applying for it but it was rather expensive.
So, to this day, I remain, not “Sinhala only”, but “SL only.”

    Thiaranee,
In my comment to U Pethiyagoda’s essay, To whom does SL belongs, I tried explain that the concept of progress has extremely limited relative meaning; progress cannot be defined without given criteria; and that each progressive measure will bring its own set of new problems. I think that your comparison (rather, change) of public taste for pre & post 2015 (= current) presidential candidates has to be understood in this light. In other words, on the democratic front, eliminating the “White Van Culture” overnight, the introduction of Right to Information Act, 19 A along with diminution of presidential powers, setting up independent commissions, etc has to be drastic advancement in freedom of speech, HR, independence of the justice system, advancement of minority rights, and so on. But, on the negative side, it also helped to nourish the perception of anarchism – sort of. The apparent political instability came from the policy conflict between two major parties in the national Gvt also contributed to this perception. Even though those who understand how democracy works would not see these as signs of real weakness, media as well as some intellectuals didn’t it that way – may be b’cos they were used to “naked tyrants”.
On the economic front, I strongly believe that Ranil led UNP Gvt did exceptionally well in handling the debt ridden and near bankrupt economy they inherited. But, here as well, the grass-root level party supporters as well as the nonpartisan voters didn’t accept Gvt’s excuse for not fulfilling election promises right away. However, I also believe that the UNP led Gvt was winning back the public support little by little until the Easter Sunday bombing. I believe that it is this event that gave a new life to idea of the “Naked Tyrant” along with race/religion.

    • 4
      11

If you believe that the economy has done exceptionally well on the economic front go back to school and learn economics. Whatever the MR government’s alleged faults the country had a high 6.5% growth rate. This has been brought down to 2.5% by Ranil’s UNP government. Ranil s the the Master planner of the great daylight bank robbery costing Billions to the nation! It maybe cushy for a grass-root level UNP party supporter like you but millions will support MR as they want a government which can stand up to challenges and develop the country as a stable nation.

        Lanka,
6.5% progress during MaRa time? Yes if you believe voodoo economics. I think that the best explanation of MaRa’s progress came from Mussamil Mohamed, W Weervansa’s propaganda man. During when he was talking about “economic assassins” (aarthica ghathakayo) he once explained how GDP can be bloated by digging ditches in the morning & refilling them in the evening! That was exactly what MaRa was doing: Investing borrowed capital under commercial rates on “white elephants”!

Yes, there was boom of constructions but at the end country was in near bankruptcy b’cos no return from investments even to pay down the loans and interests. The result was China nearly taking over the property for good (which was China’s plan when they loaded loans on MaRa). Everybody including PS members loyal to MaRa was making money in those days but when the well dried up whole nation was at the risk of declaring bankrupt. That is the main reason why MaRa went for an early election.

You blame Ranil now for increasing taxes b’cos MaRa is not running the Gvt. MaRa knows the truth better than you do.

TG asks “Why is the UNP silent about the unjust incarceration of the young Sinhala-Buddhist writer, Shakthika Sathkumara, for writing a short story critical of a fictional Buddhist monk?” This man not only wrote critically about a fictional Buddhist monk, he wrote Prince Siddhartha’s servant Channa and Devi Yasodhera discussed that Prince Siddhartha had doubts about who the father of Prince Rahula was. Although there are real stories about Buddhist monks, why did this man try to invent a wholly factitious story about Price Siddhartha?

We will not achieve anything by talking about Mahinda, Gotabhaya, Ranil, Sirisena et al ad nauseam. Now we have to find the alternative.

Democracy is an utterly nonsensical system. Democratically elected leaders have only one goal: to be elected and re-elected. They don’t care about the country at all. When they get elected, the only thing they do is fill their pockets and try to increase their power. This is true not only in Lanka but in all democratic countries in the world, especially Yank-land, which tries to force their nonsensical democratic system on the whole world. The system of having competing political parties lends itself to lies, deception,
and corruption. Our ancient Sinhala kings were much better rulers than any modern democratic leader!

    • 2
      0

      Couldn’t agree with you more.
Democracy in the hands of the wrong people becomes a weapon to attack and deny rights of minorities. Minority people also are citizens and have equal rights as every other citizen.
To buttress your point further, how come there is no democracy in companies/ industries, in the civil service, in most professions? We all know what the end result would be.
If you want to be progressive you have to choose leaders based on merit.
In Sri Lanka we consider everything except merit when we choose our leaders. And leaders have become experts at appealing to our emotions and feelings.
Because the majority of people are basic simpletons easily get carried away by dirty political stunts and end up choosing the wrong leaders each time.
The truth is we have no option, just like how advertising is designed to slowly but surely get into our heads, politicians too have their formula to twist our rational minds and keep us confused, resulting in us voteing for the most lousy people and we are happy about it too.
The first weapon they use is to uncouple our rational mind. They use religion, race, cast, creed, history, name it. They then pit us against each other, thus breaking our collective power.
Then they glorify themselves, we now are like sheep in a flock. We just follow and cast our vote.
The question we should ask ourselves is what do we really want? We never ask that question. Instead the politician makes us ask the wrong questions, questions to which he has premeditated answers, like I said we don’t have a chance.

Great article Tisaranee. You make good points, and ask the right questions. The present regime is inept, and the main guy has let the nation down by doing nothing to prevent the horrible Easter day attacks, despite being warned by the Muslims, who even protested these extremists, who were obviously a threat to all. In any other democracy, he would have had to apologize and step down for failing the country and people. He also should apologize to the nation for making us look like fools, by conspiring with the Rajapaksa’s and giving us two Prime Ministers, and a constitutional crisis. He has been a miserable failure.

Ranil WIckremasinghe is as always missing in action, and is just a figurehead.

As for the past regime, they tried every trick in the book, including conspiring with Sinhala nationalists, being silent when the minorities are being attacked, and then trying to participate in Ramadan festivities, to show solidarity, just to win that magic number of Muslim votes (and the naive will do so). All to return to days of fear, attacks on journalists, white vans, BBS goons given freedom to do whatever they are asked to do, and a family enriching themselves with ill gotten gains.

Sri Lankans have nothing good to look forward to. Rinse and repeat.

    • 3
      7

Tamils who took part in LTTE terrorism are not terrorists but ‘rebels’. Muslims fanatics who took part in massacres are saints who go to meet seven brides. If anyone in the majority speaks out they are Sinhala Nationalists. Sri Lanka does not need the Muslim vote. It is only because corrupt politicians are have not got the balls to ban Religious or ethnic based political parties. It is time for the Sinhala people to wake up and ensure this.

Destroying terrorists is one thing, being indifferent to the massacre of thousands of civilians, and then refusing to be accountable makes him a war criminal. If this was YOUR son, brother, sister, or family member, you will not appreciate his methods.

For some reason, US is going to privatize the war. So, it will be fought by military companies. They do not care whether they are war criminals or not. Sri lankan war criminals killed LTTE homicide bombers and black tigers. But, the War criminals that will be brought by ACSA and SOFA will be of a different kind. They have bombed even wedding parties in Afghanistan. Even Darusman report acknowledges the LTTE war crimes. In a Decent court and not ICC appointed by the International community will find, Sri lanka did it best to save Tamil hostages held in Mullai waikkal and and other NO-FIRE ZONES. If so, you are missing out on the quality of sound. There are some good audio gear out there that are reasonably priced.

Search/Google for “Kondo Ongaku” and read up on it. They cost as much as houses but I could recommend some that sound very similar for much less money.

Watch “Audio Note Company Tour, Pt 1” on YouTube – there are 10 parts.

It’s a comprehensive tour of a modern audio factory. The Dutch guy Peter Qvortrup who resides in England ripped off the original Japanese designer Kondo and establish a factory in England. Kondo was a passionate audiophile and a designer ……… Qvortrup is a rip-off-artist business man.

Read “Audio Note Ongaku Article by Hiroyasu Kondo” in enjoythemusic.com for Kondo’s philosophy on audio and Zen like attention to detail.

Native, how are you “educated” …… are you a man of science? Or are you “educated” like GL, Dayan ….. et al ?

You dont have to answer; if you dont want to …… but it would help if you want to talk about finer points of audio ……….. to give Jim Reeves a new lease of life.

UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe is a person who loves to be the opposition leader for ever. He does not care if the UNP win or lose as long as he wins the election and become the opposition leader. Therefore, he will never give the leadership to Sajith Premadasa. It is high time that the senior members of the UNP get together and protest within the party and persuade the UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe to select Sajith Premadasa if they are really interested in winning the election. Only Sajith Premadasa can give a strong fight to Gotabaya Rajapakshe, nobody else can. Karu Jayasuriya is out of question, he cannot get even one tenth of the votes what Gota gets. If the UNP decides to stay in the opposition like their leader, then forget Sajith and pick anyone else. It all depends on the UNP members, if 90% of the members say Sajith Premadasa, then Ranil may listen.

      Eagle,
There is an old Tamil proverb, “whether Raman rules or Ravanan rules, who really cares”. Any Chingala government comes to power, it is not going to make any difference to the Tamils.
Whether UNP rules or SLFP rules or SLPP rules or any damn Chingala party rules, the Tamils don’t care because the discrimination against Tamils won’t stop. The Tamils have seen and experienced all these rulers. The Tamil-Chingala conflict is not new to Sri Lanka. It is deeply rooted in our history. For the last two thousand odd years the Chingalas had been fighting with the Demalas, and it is still not over. Elaras, Dutugemunus, Prabakarans and Rajapakshes will come and go but the Chingalas and the Demalas will stay forever and keep fighting.
If the Chingalas want to keep Sri Lanka as a poor begging third world pariah state forever with continuous Tamil uprising which means political instability, economic shrinkage/crisis and international interference (India, UK, US, EU, UN, etc.) forever, you can have it. Don’t worry, if you push the Tamils down the pallam, they will pull the Chingalas also along with them. When there is no peace for Demalas, there won’t be any peace for the Chingalas either. If you Chingalas deprive the Tamil rights, you also will continue to suffer along with the Tamils. If the Chingalas do not solve the Tamil issue, do not expect the Tamils to keep quite. The history will continue to repeat until the issue is solved. The Chingalas must understand this basic law.

      • 4
        3

Thambapanni Man why should any government that comes to power make any preferential difference to the Tamils? Without making general allegation tell the exact discrimination that a Tamil suffers. What rights does a sinhala person have that a Tamil does not have? Do not take the Sinhala man’s tolerance as a weakness. Do not generalise spell out the exact ‘Tamil issue’. Start any Tamil terrorism again and be assured that they will be shown the way to Nandikadal. The basic Sri lankan law is for everyone, the Sinhala people followed it, it is the Tamil terrorists who violated it and they received their just desserts.

The truth won’t on your tongue too and proper history will not get into your head like Mahanama. Keep fantasize with your women sleeping with wild lions and that thought entertain you.

The Governor of CB who appeared in PSC threw a bucket of shit on Karunkanayakam’s face. Karunkanayakam abolished the Foreign Exchange Act and introduced a new one to save his ass from money laundering charges. A CB official told they cannot take any action against Hisbulla because of the New Act. Then Karunkanayakam said it is you (CB) who prepared the new Act. Immediately the Governor told “No Sir, the Act was drafted without the involvement of Central Bank”.

    Long live the crooks.

      Yes!

Shameless Karunkanayakam got his bucketful Schittt right on his face.

      “Long live the crooks.”

      Mahinda is 73 years old.
      Gotabhaya is 70 years old.

How long do you want them to live?

International community hate Rajapkses and now Ranil too. That happened even to Saddam Hussein and Egypt Leaders, Osama Bin Laden and his AL Qaeda, Al Bagdadi and ISIS (not his) and even to Theresa May. After some time they are bad because they stepped out side their agenda.
Now, they are handling Maithripala sirisena. We need to wait and see what kind of promises he gives in hiding. Anyway, only the corrupt politicians are qualified for the International community. So, will see. Mangala’s Money is working for Democracy.

      gamini,

Aren’t you sounding a little desperate?

What’d I tell ye …….. about Ranil’s great ability to always snatch defeat from the jaws of victory!

Now it’s the poor country that has to suffer.

        nimal fernando ,

What more could I say ! Spot on . Country can go to hell but Ranil
must lead even in the hell and that is gamini ! Ranil is very busy
going after law making and amendments so that people can
queue up in courts for their grievances filling the pockets of jobless
lawyers . People of all walks of life are now forced to understand
that they are trapped by a bunch of useless politicos ! Politicos
themselves on the other hand feels the heat of outside pressure
to payback in different forms for the debt traps they walked in for
        their own selfish ends .

If the state and government don’t treat their people well, would American rule/base make any difference?
Are of the opinion local slavery is better than American slavery?

Why couldn’t Ranil make an effort to either release or charge the Tamil detainees some of whom have spent more than 20 years in custody?
What happened to the $18 billions stashed abroad by the clan?

It appears Ranil has saved the clan and the crooks from corruption and war crime charges.

“Masses are Asses”. I am not sure whether it is if Keselwatta Kid gets the Candidacy to contest from the UNP or Whether the KId gets real deal, sorry the real Gig..
Either way It is a nice one Ms T..

Surely those asses can’t be from Dr Ranil’s UNP Elite , Anglican and Vellala Faction.
Because they have already demolished the Kid, by calling him a OL dropout and a Nincomppop Minister who knows only to build culverts.

I don’t think Ms T has to worry too much about Keselwatta Kid coming as the UNP Candidate .
The Kid although may come as the candidate of a new UNP Sinhala Buddhist Breakaway Faction .aligned with Sirisena’s SLFP Faction, with Ex UNP Wijesekra as the PM Candidate.

After noticing that Dr Ranil’s gun Bond Attorney the Poodle Clug Kid threatened to suicide bomb himself, if Dr Ranil is going hijacks the Candidacy, Keselwatta Kid may have a few Sinhala Buddhist UNP supporters in Colombo to add the UNP Dalits whom Ms callas Asses.

Keselwatta Kid who has been on the side of our Brother Cardinal in Colombo since the Muslims Bombed Kochikade and the Wahabis, Bathudeens , Hesbollas and the All Ceylon Muslims joined the UNP Muslims,to take hselter at the Temple Trees, the Kid may even pull most of the votes in the Catholic Belt.

With the UNP gun Digital Minister Harin openly declaring that he will resign if Dr Ranil comes, the Kid may also be able to get a few Catholic Junior Ministers and Young MPs to his new Alliance.
Which will give Keselwatta Kid a better than even chance.

The latest is that Dr Ranil.s Yahaplana Legal Apparatus is trying to arrest Kolonnawa Mangala Thero who apparentley is the Boss of the Amarapura Nikaya
Again it is on another Baby Elephant abducting charge.

“Keselwatta Kid who has been on the side of our Brother Cardinal in Colombo ………………………………….. the Kid may even pull most of the votes in the Catholic Belt.”

The cross dresser may be asked to carry stones, mortar, bricks …. to help Sajith build his planned 1125 Chaityas in the North East a task your ancestor’s Rajaraja Chola, Rajendra Chola, …. Rajadhiraja Chola could not achieve.

Did your brother Cardinal’s ancestors also come from Coromandel coast like yours? Perhaps Ranjith could transfer some of his Churches to your Keselwatta kid and open up the Church’s treasury to him.

By the way the kid ones suggested the country’s structure should be transformed into Bhumiputra system of governance.

A brilliant article as usual from a very articulate writer whose maturity, relevance and understanding with accurate insights of present-day Sri Lanka should be appreciated in full. There are perhaps a few questionable references but overall the merits far outweigh the demerits.

One thing that struck me was the photograph in the article. Do look at those smiling faces of the supporters of the family of Rajapakses. Do they seem like people capable of independent thought and decisions based on economic or social principles? To me, they look like pathetic sycophants who hold on to every fart-smell emanating from the fat-cats in the foreground..

The candidate for SLPP and SLFP will be Maithripala.
    ..
Deal is to clear Rajapaksha name for the 2025 election.
    ..
Hence why the court hearings are delayed until October for Gota.
    ..
JVP will back Nagananda and UNP will back Premadasa eventually.
    ..
    All the rest is drama

What makes you to believe Nagananda will bed in with JVP?

        0

Nagananda and JVP have similar visions.
        ..
After Nagananda becomes president, the PM gets the power.
        ..
Supporting him will give JVP a better chance in the parliament election.

“Nagananda and JVP have similar visions”.

On what basis can their visions be similar, when no racism is evinced in the former, while in the latter it yet remains latent.and unshed?

          • 0
            0

It looks as if JVP did mistakes in the past for sure.
            ..
Same happened in China and Russia.
            ..
The difference is other socialist parties betrayed JVP and leaked their plans for personal gains.
            ..
In the next episode, UNP acted as JVP to destroy their name before killing Vijevira.
            ..
Both Nagananda and JVP are talking about economic discrimination and corruption.
            ..
Whether we like it or not the poor will not stay hungry and meek forever.
            ..
If a revolution happens it will be too late to take care of their needs.
