The Need For A New Beginning: One Of Self-Reflection & Correction!

By Lionel Bopage

Dr. Lionel Bopage

Today is the 74th anniversary when the British imperialists granted independence to a land they had conquered and exploited and whose racism towards the inhabitants was a marked tenor of their occupation. They left a primitive capitalist system of production – a plantation economy that was bereft of a manufacturing base. This system was semi-baked as the country had not matured internally to move away from the ideological yoke of feudalism and the system of forces and relations of production based on feudalism. One could say that even today, capitalism is a spectre that dreads the social, economic political and cultural stage of a land where feudalism is still ripe and being continuously revived by the ruling elite for their survival.

On this day, we can make a commitment to start anew, in the expectation that by the 75th anniversary of independence, we would at least be able to exercise the opportunity to acknowledge all the communities that inhabit our land, including its traditional owners, the Veddas, the First People of Lanka. So, let me start by paying my respect to the elder’s past, present and emerging of all the communities of the land of Lanka including its First People.

At the moment, the people of Lanka are going through multiple crises – political and economic. We should have done much better as a country. Of course, we can do better in future, if we analyse the current situation and are honest enough to understand what went wrong in the past and learn from those experiences. Such reflection would be a moment to explore about what we could have avoided in the past in order to prevent our whole society, the people, the communities, the families being divided and fragmented in a self-destructive manner. If we can do that successfully as a nation, as communities, and as a society, then we can expect better days ahead. It would give us the opportunity to celebrate in a way we have never done during the last seven plus decades.

We are not an ordinary people. We have survived a four century old colonial dispossession, and now close to a century old local dispossession. Historically, we have gone through several challenging times during many catastrophes that brought destruction to us, the experiences of which none of us can ever forget. We had many natural disasters and man-made conflicts that were brought upon us by the ruling elites and their cohorts. We have survived by looking after each other, by being generous, brave, and united.

We could celebrate and savour such occasions when the diverse people of our country e got together to assist each other’s recovery; leaving aside all the artificial barriers self-constructed or planted in our minds by others. What joyful occasions they were! However, in no time we lost those moments, as we were not vigilant enough, too inward looking, and self-focused. We soon returned to our tragic and redivided ways, pushed in that direction by a few power-hungry, self-seeking, greedy elites, and their cronies.

Those moments of togetherness and self-help, we need more than ever in our country. We need to celebrate and incentivise those moments that compelled us to be together, not only as families, but as a land of a plurality of peoples, faiths and cultures united as never before.

The whole world is going through another phase of the Covid pandemic, which apparently could cause unseen harm to its victims, both physically and mentally. In Sri Lanka, many people appear to be in the shadows, because as a society we are unaware of the plight, brought on by the pandemic. People are exhausted with the ongoing uncertainty, inconvenience, and disruption, like the rest of the inhabitants on the globe. People are still dying with Covid pandemic either diagnosed or not.

Children have been going through a very tough time, with no way of accessing remote learning due to a lack of facilities. Children do not have an environment where they could enjoy their childhood. They should be able to do so as they are going through the best years of their lives. The private tuition industry, transport chaos and teacher apathy have made the situation even more intolerable.

In face of this crisis our leaders have been apathetic, irresponsible, and self-aggrandizing. As a society, everybody appears to suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), at times from multiple disorders due to the conflicts, war, and the day-to-day harrowing experiences we encounter. Still, the mental healthcare the people receive appear to be extremely limited. In the context of the pandemic, the children are the most vulnerable in terms of mental health. The sooner we provide better mental healthcare to those who are in need, the better it will be for the future of our society. It is essential therefore for the government to prioritise and take measures to provide mental health protection to the children along with their education.

Nonetheless, as a community, we are looking forward to a day when we can put all these painful experiences behind? Yes, we need to dream, believing that we have to make a start towards that day, otherwise that day will never come. It will come only if we are wise enough to discard our irrational thoughts, ill-feelings, and subjective animosities against each other, be it individual, familial, communal, or national. We need to put all that in the past behind us if we were to succeed.

That moment is here right before our eyers. If we can get this moment right, before it vanishes again for a long, long time, we could emerge as a united country: recognising and respecting the plurality of communities, we can confront the current multiple crises of economy, food, energy, health etc. and emerge as a better, fairer, stronger, more prosperous, and more united society.

If we wish to build a better future and a more resilient society in the land of Lanka, we need to learn our own hard lessons from the experiences that we are trying to forget. This will be the moment, the opportunity to build upon our best attributes as human beings so that we can realize our potential as a country as never before. This requires us to be courageous, strong, and thick skinned to grasp this moment, to discard ill-feelings and distrust towards the ‘other’; form our own empowered communities to lead this much needed national transformation.

Such empowered communities will generate their own leaders, who could provide the vision and leadership necessary for the future to mobilise all Lankans together as a nation towards realising this common ideal. They will demand a government that steps up to its responsibilities and fulfills its fundamental roles of protecting people, acting as a force for good and changing the lives of people for the better. While our peoples are confronted with extremely difficult socio-economic and cultural constraints, a few appear to be utilising the national resources for their own personal or family gains.

As a society, we need to work towards achieving rising living standards, secure employment in both private and public sectors, better wages and work conditions, better education and healthcare, and fairer and equitable opportunities, while at the same time safeguarding democratic values and human rights as a society within a pluralist environment with inclusiveness at its beating heart. A society where gender, race, faith, and caste will have no influence on the opportunities or possibilities for an individual to reach his or her full potential as a human being. For this to occur, we need a society that is reconciled with ourselves, with our history and with an understanding of our current social realities.

Our government needs to be competent and have integrity, not creating or providing incentives to disunite but to forge us as peoples of a single country united and looking forward to the future. Such a government will create opportunities not barriers along the way. We have to make the environment conducive for communities to come together by affording the respect and dignity they deserve. They are not objects of political opportunity to be used in cynical games to capture and maintain political power, to safeguard elite family interests and privileges. We have suffered far too long from an unpalatable ideology brew of, faith, race, language, gender, class, caste, and regional differences being used to divide us as a society.

We have to rejuvenate and harness the best traditions and values of our hospitable nation, developing leaderships that bring our people together, in a spirit of compassion and decency, and rebuilding on the foundation of our greatest strengths and best qualities. We cannot do this by appealing to the worst qualities of humanity. Our government needs to seek to unite the country as a whole. That could be only realised by treating all Lankans with equity, empathy, and respect; and dealing with them truthfully and taking responsibility for the governmental actions and thus, earning the respect of all.

On this important day in our history, we need to remember that it is the only way left to us to build a nation where everybody will be treated with the respect and the dignity they deserve, providing them with equitable opportunities in an inclusive environment so that each and every Lankan will have the chance of reaching his/her full potential.

That will be a Lanka where no one will be held back, and no one will be left behind.

Lionel Bopage, I expected you to shoot straight. You did not. Where did we go wrong?

      Dear Lionel
Very much needed input to A desperate nation
But as Nathan has pointed out rightly
your philosophical approach is missing the Punch needed at this hour of need and FORCE the powers to be to act to improve the status core

That aside your argument is valid and need to be expounded.
On the issue of competency and transperency the
authorities need also be not so arrogant and should have some compassion in this land of Dharma.

These power hungry politicans and the administrative arm has become intolerant of human frailty .
A nation which does not care for the welfare of its citizens as whole can not prosper. That’s the natural way
of justice. United we stand divided we fall

    Lionel,

Where did this “ruling elite” come from? Did they fall down from the sky?

    These very same “ruling elite” were once ……….. colonial-fighters, imperialists-hunters, capitalist-denouncers, freedom-fighters, ghost-fighters, vampire-hunters ……. anti-neo-neo-anti-imperiaelist-neo-anti-capitalist-pro-comunist-neo-neo-anti-anti-socialists ………

Now they are the oppressors they once denounced and supposedly fought against ………… welcome to the human-condition!

Why do you recommend approaching IMF?

How would you convince your trade union patriotic leaders, saffron clad scatter brain contingent, alleged war criminals, … thieving politicians, the 6.9 million, ….. to accept your proposals?

Let’s get rid of the thieving politicians first. Now if Rajapaksas confess their crimes and give the money to local business venture, then they can stay. Unfortunately they are using country money and electricity to do the crypto-thing…hence the many power cuts. There’re in underground bunkers (Prabas old hideouts). Hand-in-hand with the LTTE too. Shocking! Port-City is a….decoy(?)….bluff.

Yes, a great effort of analysis and a fervent appeal for sanity for a better future.
But may be only two courses for action to get out:
    1. To ensure abolition of the political party system and throw out the current few top politicos who hold power, by mass protests.
    OR
    2. To educate the voters to think nationally and not on narrow personal issues and benefits, and get a real “people based” constitution.
Unless we are pushed to unbearable greater hardships or a severe catastrophe comes by, I cannot think of how we can get ahead in current circumstances. Nothing on the horizon. We would blunder on.
Waiting for anything tangible from UN or other govts will not work as they will only mouth some platitudes to make us cheer and keep us hopeful.

Most of the good ideals of better jobs and a good future were the ideals of the previous government. That was a golden opportunity. We had the talented people in charge of the right policies. The Ven Sobhitha Thero who championed the movement of good government and anticipated the abolishment of the Executive presidency sensed trouble when he phoned Prof. Wijesuriya late at night and expressed his suspicions about Sirisena. He sensed that the promise given to abolish the executive would not be kept. That was the beginning. The real truth of how one man who sabotaged his own government out of jealousy and suspicion has not been told accurately due to media manipulation by the Rajapakshe propaganda channels who twisted the truth over and over again. The victims of his nasty betrayals have largely remained silent due to the reluctance of the main gutless wonder the then PM who refuses to blurt out the truth of how he and his cabinet were treated by the sick uneducated scoundrel of a man. Some of this spilled out the other day when R.K. could not stand it any more and held a press conference to dish out about some of the goings on.

“February 4th is a Black Day for Lankans.”

For indigenous Sinhala Buddhists who were oppressed by colonial rulers 04 February 1948 was a bright day.
Probably for those who scratched the back of Brits and became the most privileged group in the country and helped Brits to oppress indigenous Sinhalayo it may be a ‘Black Day’ because they were worried that they might lose the privileged status they enjoyed during British rule.

    Contd.
One cannot have a new beginning when the Sinhalese idiots such as the former President get voted into power by like minded buffoons. One also needs to realize that expecting the current set of scoundrels manning the so called state intelligence and the investigating arms of law enforcement and the AGs department to take any action to punish the Rajapkshes and their henchmen will fail. This is because the previous government relied on this method and failed spetacularly. You need a new set of mandatory punishments, a new set of well trained investigators and prosecutors. The entire intelligence apparatus created by the Rajapakshes needs to be abolished and the operatives interdicted. The AGs department needs to be cleaned out. Finally media moguls created by the Rajapakshes have to be exposed and punished and their media licenses cancelled for if not the good intentions and plans of any new government will torn to shreds while all manner of deceit and lies spread hampering the very functioning of a government by these media moguls. This is also a lesson to be learnt from the past.

The 4th of February 1948 must be declared a day of mourning and not celebration because the suffering caused by our own indigenous rulers has been more hellish than what we suffered under so called Imperial Rule during which time in general people enjoyed a higher quality of life. The Imperialists never killed people on their way to work nor kidnapped and tortured them nor attacked news paper offices. Now we have the free reigns of goons.

I forgot to add: It must be well remembered that when we carried the Ceylon Passport with it the bearer could visit most countries without the need of a prior visa. It was well received at Immigration Counters throughout the world. They are not keen on receiving Srilankans or when they come to know that you are a Srilankan they want to distance themselves far and fast. Under the British rule we had judges of distinction where justice was assured as it was said that “justice will not only be done but also seem to be done”.
They were honourable gentlemen and gentle ladies unlike the Panchikawatte second hand car parts salesman type of today, going by my own bitter experience.

“They are not keen on receiving Srilankans or when they come to know that you are a Srilankan they want to distance themselves far and fast.”

Travelling with a Sri Lankan passport became a nightmare due to Tamil terrorists. I have plenty of experiences. Had difficult time convincing immigration officers in Vietnam, Laos and Kampuchea that I am not a Tamil terrorist involved in arms smuggling.
When travelling to western countries I had to surrender the passport to cabin crew who handed over the passport to immigration officers because Tamils used to tear the passport and flush the pieces in the commode or in some instances ate the pieces. This prevented them from deporting.
After Tamil terrorists were eliminated, situation has changed.

They did not, deliberately because they ascertained and know the gullibility of SL voters.
They however, enacted a law, to enforce a transport ban, which ensures the voters are deprived of their right to express their franchise, especially in remote and outlandish areas of the nation, which skews the will of the people.

A former CJ purportedly, blatantly violated the Constitution of Sri Lanka, by filing a petition on 27th June 2019, on behalf of Gotabaya R in the civil case filed by Lasantha W’s daughter.
It has been expressly prohibited ,“in Article 110 (3) of the Constitution for any Supreme Court Judge or a Judge who held office in the Court of Appeal to ‘appear, plead, act or practise’ in any court, tribunal or institution as an Attorney-At-Law without the written consent of the President of the republic.”
This particular ex CJ did in violation of the constitution, which he swore allegiance at the time to take oaths as attorney and subsequently as CJ of SL.
Why and for what ends he do it? To earn his dollars to sustain in the “New World” – not Nawaloka of the D’Dasa fame – instead the country west of the Atlantic! Patriots without equal deserting SL

I must respectfully disagree with you on the first part (upper case) hereinbefore.
That is a sacrosanct day in SL calendar, when SL were freed from “shackles of colonial yoke”!
That should be celebrated without let or hindrance and if any should contemplate such adverse actions they should be treated as unpatriotic and dealt as committing treason!!
However, agree with you entirely on latter part (lowercase), which is the cause of dismay as stated by you
The resolution remains with and solely rests with the sovereign people of Sri Lanka and whether they want to exercise that right to deal with it or not???
This is a FREE, INDEPENDENT (socialist when convenient) Country.
So that part how they are going to deal with it strictly rests with sovereign people and express dissatisfaction or otherwise at periodic elections, constitutionally! Amnesia plays its part!!
      No fault of the regime!

May be Imperial Britain, predominantly a “Nation of Traders” did not encounter such graft and Bribe in electioneering to include such provision??
Why did not our ‘smart’ Alec politicians, since independence device a system to overcome??
They did not, deliberately because they ascertained and know the gullibility of SL voters.
They however, enacted a law, to enforce a transport ban, which ensures the voters are deprived of their right to express their franchise, especially in remote and outlandish areas of the nation, which skews the will of the people.
I would wager, that this enforcement is to cast the “HORA Chande” at will and if repealed such outright impersonation would be brought to Zero!!!

      (Part III)
People ‘whisper’ or “muted sign language” that this law is in force to prevent voters being influenced by interested parties, to vote for a specific individual (presidential) and Parties (in Parliamentary) elections.
That is simple and clear BS.
      That is not the truth.
If it is and considered to be influencing/bribing the voters, then what do you call the following:
      1. One or two, Thousand rupee notes with the contestants’ voting card
      2. Calendar with contestant photo, when you can’t electioneer/display on Election Day?
      3. Chicken Biryani Bath Parcel and ¼ bottle of Gal arrack to prospects save the children
They take the voters for an outright “Ride” and get elected.
That is by any definition even with convoluted thinking is a fraudulent election!! Bribing!!
      TO;
      ELECTIONS COMMISSION,
please wake up, if you are in deep slumber; alternatively if you are in enforced hibernation, break the shackles and get real and do your job that’s your livelihood paid by SL voters!!
ELSE RESIGN EN MASSE AND AT LEAST BE COUNTED FOR YOUR INTEGRITY AND RECTITUDE.
You all are sinning, by not following The Buddha’s teachings to do your duty by the employer with integrity – the SL Public!!!!!

“The Need For A New Beginning: One Of Self-Reflection & Correction!”

Thoughts of the Sinhalese majority and their leaders are not going to change overnight. They are the people calling the shots in the country. Their beliefs are warped. If the premise is faulty or wrong no amount of logic is going to yield useful conclusion.

Until a new Sinhalese avatar appears with an enlightened vision and thinking, I am afraid the country is going to muddle through for centuries.

Lankans IN dependence is just another sham like democrazy, low and odor and constipation (constitution ????) we have had until now. Lanka is requesting $ 500 million loan and rice to feed , from Pakistan who in turn reportedly ran out of Paracetamol, for their much needed dengue patients. Sir Fail tries reassuring by saying “this too shall pass”. After 74 years IN dependence Mahinda says “independence is not something ends with victory it is something should be won day by day”. That may be the reason amidst public struggle for their independence the Mafia family keeps celebrating daily.

But Tamils do not want to return to their ancestral homeland from where their ancestors were picked up by colonial rulers to bring them to Sinhale as coolies because they know the situation in their ancestral homeland is much worse than the situation in Sinhale.

    Lionel,
Change is necessary but who will do that change is a question? Do we need another 400 years to make this changes? The current problems are not created by British or any other outsiders. The problems are created by our political and religious leadership. If the people wants change they can make that changes. But unfortunately, people are not willing to change.

Are we truly independent? If we are truly independent there should be unity among all the religions, races, and regions – this we do not find. Parliament is full of rogues from top to bottom. We spend more money on armed forces than education and have the 5th largest active army in the world (whereas in other countries which have a higher number most of them are reserves). We do not appoint Judges, top government officials, armed forces seniors, or even police seniors based on the same percentage of ethnic mix in the country. Judiciary is ridiculed. The same AG who filed cases against politicians for bribery and corruption today sits as Chief Justice and those crooks are pardoned “nidoskota nidahas”. Is this the color of independence? In my opinion, we are a “Truly FAILED STATE” and a “MILITARY RULED” country governed by “CROOKS and CIRIMINALS”.

“We spend more money on armed forces than education and have the 5th largest active army in the world..”

Certainly, that is an unfortunate situation emerged due to war declared by racist separatist Tamil politicians against the Government of Sri Lanka and indigenous Sinhala Buddhists after passing Vaddukkodai Resolution with a manufactured history to create a separate State for Tamils in Yapanaya who are the descendants of Dravidians came from Hindusthan and occupied Sinhala land and claimed that NE is their ‘Traditional Homeland’.
It is a pity that the tax payers in this country had to waste enormous amount of scarce resources to eliminate Tamil terrorists that played havoc for three decades.

If the Sinhala Buddhist Govt gives equal rights to non-majority these agitations by the non-majority will not last. Even today the non-majority do not represent in the same proportional percentage as a percentage represented in the entire country’s population in the Justice Dept, Police, Armed Forces, Senior Govt Officers etc. So why should the non-majority not fight for the equal rights instilled in the Constitution?

Let us ask the best person in town to clarify that conundrum ‘The Eagle’, with focused piercing vision, normally bereft of factual evidence seems to be the best to answer that question.
Response with the preamble, “due to war declared by racist separatist Tamil politicians against the Government of Sri Lanka and indigenous Sinhala Buddhists after passing Vaddukoddai (Batukotte) Resolution with a manufactured history to create a separate State for Tamils in Yapanaya who are the descendants of Dravidians came from Hindustan and occupied Sinhala land and claimed that NE is their ‘Traditional Homeland’, would be very illuminative as to the reason!!”

This is the outcome, of people (voters) in majority not thinking through for the best outcome and casting votes based on the words of politicians prompting the emotions of those voters by false propaganda at voting time
Highlight my point below 2 news items, in my view untruthful, but would sell to most gullible voters:
      1. “Objective of these saboteurs is nothing but prevention of President Rajapaksa’s plan to develop this country. There is a clear conspiracy behind this,” Minister Johnston Fernando (JF) said addressing a meeting held at Millagoda commencing the 100,000 Projects Rural Development Programme for the Kurunegala District
      2. President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has directed the relevant officials to immediately release the containers of essential items held up at the Customs. The President has stressed the need to maintain a steady supply of essential commodities including food in the market without any shortage.
Both these are due to shortage of dollars to pay
      I. The power crisis, because lack of fuel being unloaded from the Tankers at anchor, in the outer harbour of Colombo Port.
II. Consignment of essential items, which presumably in port bonded storage pending receipt of payment due to seller

Essential items, HE President has been Misdirected or Misinformed as to the constrained flow of the essential items by interested parties, to “save their skin” or give misinformation to the public to portray that the situation is beyond their control, but due to saboteurs!!

Local revenue has plummeted down due to unwarranted tax exemptions and duty concessions to ‘Hangers On’, ultimately for self-Aggrandisement and onward voyage to St. Martin!! Alternatively used for local election inducement of SL Rs. 1000 at voting time.

“The Need For A New Beginning: One Of Self-Reflection & Correction “
As usual Lionel has tried to stay relevant & connected to his topic. Still nothing mentioned here for Tamils that how to stop the uncontrollable Genocide taking place in Ceylon. Cheating intention of Sinhala Leadership showed itself right in the same year Ceylon received Freedom. It named the disenfranchising laws of Tamils as Indian Pakistani Citizenship Acts. While Tamils were being stripped of their citizenship by the same government they voted for, they came up with this dodging name to slip through the S29 of the constitution. When it was time they completely removed the minority protection section 29.
Intentionally or inadvertently, Lionel has followed Hitler King’s footstep on inviting the country for a new start. After a long illegal closure of Parliament Hitler opened it with the Speech of the throne, this year. There was long expectation within Tamil parties that the Hitler would invite them for negotiations for the Devolution of Power. But he ordered to the Tamils parties to abandon the mandate they received from Tamils for negotiate Self Determination, but to ratify his development programs, which are very skillfully coined to continue the genocide while pulling wool on the IC’s eye as “developments”. Interestingly, the Tamil Nationalistic political parties who suffers by disunity, unanimously renounced Hitler’s call for work for him.

      Mallaiyuran,
“Still nothing mentioned here for Tamils that how to stop the uncontrollable Genocide taking place in Ceylon.”

Tamils keep on complaining that uncontrollable genocide of Tamils taking place in Sinhale but they do not want to return to their ancestral homeland across the Palk Strait. While genocide of Tamils taking place, Tamils in Colombo do not want to leave Colombo and happy to live amongst Sinhala racists. Funny thing is number of Tamils in Colombo keep on increasing creating mini-Tamil Nadus in Wellawatta, Dehiwala, Galkissa. Guys who say ‘Sinhalayo are not welcome in the North’ happily live with Sinhalayo in Colombo. Is there something wrong in the brains of Tamils?

Is there something wrong in the brains of Tamils?
Though their brain is like yours, the wrong of it is, it is missing the most important part, but yours is thriving in that, i.e. the native, nasty cunning that is present in all Sinhala Intellectuals’ brain. Malaysia agreed to Singapore going alone. You, a Malaysian, oppose Mathuru Bhoomi’s policies. Then you call yourself the Patriot of SingaLE, Wildlife Sanctuary. Your bosses have pledged exclusive allegiance to America. (I did too but I feel relieved by rescinding Wildlife’s obligation.) Many of your Sinhala colleagues see that they are gaining US citizenship as a gift from Heaven. But they, like you, practiced anti-Western policies back in Lankawe. Ponny opposed Langkang’s anti-Western policies only after he was barred from visiting America. Without shame, he condemned the Chitanta Government that they lacked diplomacy to be friendly with the West, so he couldn’t go to America. But he, with Old Rowdy, and other war criminal ministers, bragged a lot how they discarded America when it asked to stop the war. Sinhala Intellectuals’, yours and others’, brains are not wrong as long as you live the life of wild foxes but eat with your hands and walk with two legs, the strange species of SinhaLE, Wildlife Sanctuary.

Lionel is talking about a new beginning but staying away from mentioning the start which has to do with the War Crime Investigation. Why do people need a government? Where is the government for the Tamils when the government Tamils voted is refusing to serve them? There is quite a number is thinking that the government first duty is to nurse the Buddhism, Islam or Hinduism and others. Governments are there for the wellbeing of the people under it, treating them as one single unit. Governments leave an obligation with the authorities to mind that matter. But the religions insert them into the ruling process, infusing millennia old ethics as better laws, stealing government employees’ authority to their priests, but undertaking no obligation, responsibility or accountability. As a result of these inserted personalities enjoying the state’s impunity, they spread corruption, violence, sextual predation, jealousy, and other destructive behaviors. The American constitution, as a model of its time, explicitly started in a different direction, that is the constitution was for people, so it said religion is out of its perspective. The Legislative Council and State Council which started self-ruling of Ceylon, started it with 1915 communal violence. This galvanized the majority community leaders to cunningly secure the power and stage planned genocide of the minorities.

  • 1
    1

So, for more than a century, the country is fast rolling downhill on genocide of Tamils, by devising the justifying and hiding techniques of these crime, in way that can work locally and internationally. Using Tamils against Tamils, the government had collected 32 nations’ support to launch a War without witness and held the War Crime Investigation for more than 13 years. The International NFP informed of their study that the Appe Aanduwa while continuing its genocide, using delay tactics to investigate its past crimes, but still UNHRC is not able to break the ice in its office.

The gargantuan hunger of the Sinhala Nation to genocide Tamils is showing up in Langkang, even on every freshly budding grass blades too. From the entire compendium of legal texts though temple preaching to school study textbook materials the anti-Tamil campaign is present. The Tamil children, at schools, in their tender age, being forcefully infused with the anti-Tamil, Sinhala venom through the racist governments’ class textbooks. This is very difficult to explain to International leaders who read in their class the science and math & history. IJC described the Standardization, 6A, PTA, like draconian acts enforced on Tamils by Appe Aanduwa were nowhere else found in the world. These were not available even in Pretoria, South African system.

In Langkang, Buddhism is clandestinely renamed, after its unique interpretation of legacy Buddhism against Tamils, as Sinhala Buddhism. There is no parallel to this in the world in any Buddhist countries. There is no Rangoon (Burma) Buddhism. But in Langkang the Buddhists’ anti-Tamils activities collectively get named as Sinhala Buddhism. Langkang is, to an unbelievable level, deep entrenched in anti-Tamil feeling. Last Yahapalanaya government lost after borrowing additional loans, not being able to increase exports and manage foreign exchange crises, but shamefully selling the country’s assets to predator governments. Ranil tactfully attempted to prevent anybody from UNP standing for the EP position, in 2019. In 2020, He dissolved his parliament one year early, realizing that the country could not be managed for one more year. While the country’s economic condition was in that state, in 2019, the man elected by the Sinhala Masses is a Hitler, in their own referral. The majority community’s priority was not rejuvenating the failed economy, nor they were looking for an economics expert to rule them. but they urgently needed a Hitler to keep minorities under check & punished. Those who oppose the cancellation of the EP position from constitution argue that if there is an elected dictator like the Langkang EP only can efficiently suppress any minority uprising against the cruelty imposed on them by majority.

  • 0
    0

The IMF has many times informed that it is ready to help Langkang get out of the current dollar shortage problem. But Langkang leaders are not ready to accept that offer because they are fearing the conditions that IMF attach may insist on a fair treatment to minorities. That will damage the Hitler’s name within the Sinhala Majority.
I can write much more here. But the fact Lionel knows more than what I can write. He very well knows that in Langkang nobody is ready to accept that the cruel treatment metered out to Tamils is the fundamental cause of economic, cultural, impunity, lack of a government to rule by law, international relationship, and other problems. Lionel called Tamils to unite with Sinhalese to fight the failure the country is facing. But Lionel also knows that the government has armed itself with two canine teeth, one 6A and the other is PTA, only to use on Tamils if they act on any way that insult their Hitler, Dutugemunu images. In the North even fishermen protesting calling for justice for their members murders is declared as illegal. The unity of the communities is fertilized with reconciliation within them. The reconciliation is the child of Mother Justice. Without a mother there will be no child.

  • 1
    1

Unless Sinhala community accepts that the 150,000 massacre in Mullaitivu is only Genocide the Chitanta government committed on Tamils and accept the responsibility for that, from where Lionel expects the reconciliation to come, and communities work together on future problems? Even a cultured man like Lionel would not come for an agreement on that. Then where one can search for reconciliation & unity. There won’t be any reconciliation or unity between Tamils and Sinhalese with the current set up of the Unitary dictator government. Here unity under unitary is not possible. But unity and peace can be built in the future between the two communities if they are separated, before Tamils are annihilated by Appe Aanduwa. Further, the Malaysia-Singapore division will not create two enemies like India & Pakistan. Tamils and Sinhalese are only one race. Hinduism & Buddhism are two religions but based on the same doctrines. They both eat Tamil Nadu, Kerala mixed food items. Women wear Sari-Blouse. They both observe the same holidays including the moon phases.
One third of Sinhala words are Tamil. All Tamils understand a lot of Sanskrit and Pali words which are the rest of the Sinhala Language.

  • 1
    1

For a century Tamils were willingly & easily studying Sinhalese and serving all over the South until politicians launched Pogrom in 1958 to loot Tamil properties and send them back to the North East. This good intention of shared living was interpreted by racist Sinhala leaders as “Colonialists’ favoritism”. Now even the foreign medias have snarled at the Sinhala Buddhist s’ ugly face of unlimited favoritism, nepotism & crony business deals. What a shame and cheap mentality! This is telling that Sinhalese don’t care about Tamils living in out of their area (North East), but not among them. So, dividing the land on the borders on the line of Tamil & Sinhala will not create any newer animosities among them. Economic, cultural, linguistic, religious exchanges will continue to flow on a laissez faire model, instead of the Government forceful conversion of Tamils into Sinhala Buddhists. Singapore – Malaysia is the solution for Tamils & Sinhalese for both races’ s peace and prosperity. Sinhalese, taking Lionel like serious politician- erudite person’s advices & will turn their attention to improve their life instead of continue spending another $400 B and their useful life on genocide Tamils.

The 1958 riots were facilitated by the “Anti Sri” campaign, the brainchild of an ambitious FP MP. The FP had no plans though and conducted in confused ways. That was made an excuse for the tar brush campaign in the South building up to the 1958 riots.

A good essay in terms of what we should/can do? But lack the details about a strategy. We should not rely on the government(not any more by the people for the people) to institute necessary change. Maintenance of the governing system is in the best interest of ruling class. For change to take place, there needs to be a People’s Movement -grassroots based. Unless there is leadership to drive such a movement it cannot succeed. At the moment, the only such movement is NPP(National people’s Power). I am not sure if there are any others? If people fight their own issues in small groups and associations, they may gain limited successes. But for a nation-building effort with self criticism and humality, a different organisational structure is necessary to act as an anti-hegemonic driver for change.

You forget a teeny weeny detail.
With passage into law of Sinhala as sole official language, the FP canvassed schools in the North which taught Sinhala as a subject to stop teaching Sinhala. That was in 1956. All schools terminated their teaching of Sinhala, lest they will be branded traitors to Tamil.
    *
A little more in that context:
It came to light that FP senator EMV Naganathan’s children were learning Sinhala while Tamil children were asked not to learn Sinhala. GGP’s supporters used to torment the FP at public meetings with the question “Is so&so’s daughter learning Sinhala?” I was at that time a school student, and heard the FP lying in public. This went on until 1960.
    *
An important purpose of the SO Act was to make Tamils less competitive for government jobs.
That stupid policy of the FP made it even more difficult for Tamils to compete.

An incident is described in Sanga literature, Purananooru(You didn’t study Tamil in young age so you wouldn’t know it; we had to memorize those poems in the school, in our time) : A mother had put Kumkum pottu, performed Arraththi and gave a spear on his hand and sent her husband to war, which the country was fighting against the enemy trying capturing it. He didn’t come back. One after another she sent her two elder children with the same pottu, Aaraththi & spears. None of them returned from the war front. She called his last son and looked at him carefully. He was still a young boy. She told him all what happened in the family. He said, mommy I have to do the same duty to the country as my entire family did. Otherwise, I am not a man from this family. She put him the KumKum pottu, performed the Aaraththi, gave him a spear on his hand, blessed him to be Victorious, and sent him to the war front.
Now, do you understand why are you such an anti-Tamil devil? Fear and selfishness manages you infusing some bogus, illogical, dry philosophy in you.

If Vasanthi orders you to go and get a Chempu of water, to keep your job safe and get more favors from her, you would be delighted to carry Chempu for Vasanthi. A man who has self-respect and understands what individual right is, would not do it. A group of people saw most of what SJV was doing was in alignment with Gandhi’s freedom fight, so they 100% supported SJV, but not Deva or Vasanthi. Still (in 2022), you could not see where SJV’s policies have driven the adamant, arrogant Sinhala Government, but Tamils have not given up their freedom fight?
Tamils studied Sinhala voluntarily before “Sinhala Only” to communicate with the neighbors they were working in. The Jaffna Tamils traders who did their business in South, many times, excelled in Sinhala than certified Tamil government officers served in south. There is no certification needed for Tamils to serve in the South. Forcing Tamils to study Sinhala is an oppression and everybody came prepared to offer their own sacrifice to win back their rights, other than you, Vasanthi , Deva & other Paramilitary Gangs.
In Canada English and French are needed. But in America many non-Spanish people are fully conversant in Spanish. That is not a requirement in the US.

Anti-Tamils policies need not come as Sinhala Only. In fact, it started by disenfranchising and extraditing Tamils to India, involuntarily. SJV opposed it and formed the Federal Party. Up country Tamils could have rejected SJV and voluntarily gone to India saying that in future Tamil Nadu would have better land to live than Langkang, so SJV should shut up from destroying their opportunity. Up Country Tamils looking for mirage greener pasture and leaving the one in the hand and going for the two in the bush would not have prevented in later days “Sinhala Only” coming. If the Tamils had switched to studying in Sinhala Medium that would not have stoped standardization coming in. Any of these would not have prevented the racist Aanduwa appointing you, an anti-Tamils, plus a moran not knowing proper Tamil in their Tamil Language translation department. It would not have prevented yesterday Aanduwa forcefully celebrating the Tamils’ Black Day in Tamil Land Vavuniya, with only Bald Heads seated in the front raw.
Nothing will prevent more oppression coming if not an International War Crime/ Genocide investigation initiated by UNHCR and then put all the Royal Criminals in Hague Prisons.

    Dear Dr Bopage
    .
Thanks for your optimism that after 74 years of destruction, there is still some hope for us to fix our problems by focusing on the problems and applying the right measures.
    .
The first part is tough but is the most important. Identifying the actual problems in Sri Lanka has eluded our leaders all along. Either because they never wanted solutions or they are part of the problem, we have not see a tangible fix.
    .
I personally think that there are two fundamental problems:
    1. We never had a equity in our justice system for the citizens.
In other words the skewed justice system setup by the colonial masters to favour themselves was never really re-orientated to give the rights and privileges back to the citizens as should be.
Let me explain, during the colonial rule, the colonial masters setup a military, a police and a judicial system to ensure protection for themselves as they were occupying our country against our will. They were taking our resources. All rules and regulations were one-sided, everything was setup to favour and protect the rulers.
Once they left, our leaders didn’t do and haven’t done much to change the colonial system of governance.

Once the colonialist left, our leaders didn’t do and haven’t done much to change the colonial system of governance.
      .
The common man does not have much of a say. The slightest thing the police and the judiciary are there to punish him, most times he cannot even say a word to defend himself, but the leaders can set murderers free.

For instance, the minute we talk about our Sri Lankan issues, some idiot will get up and say we came here first, the next idiot will oppose, the cycle continues and in the end work done is zero.
      .
We are trying to drive forward with our eyes peeled to the rearview mirror.
