The NPP Government & Its Philistine Detractors

By Rajan Philips

Rajan Philips

Questions continue to be speculated about the true intentions of the JVP in orchestrating the NPP government – whether the JVP is still committed to its old Marxist-Leninist policies and whether it may or may not implement them through its NPP front. Further, will the JVP/NPP allow Sri Lanka’s multi-party democracy to continue or resort to one party governance like in countries where a Communist Party is in power? The fact that local government elections were held under an NPP government after a seven year hiatus is conveniently forgotten. That the LG elections had previously been postponed and cancelled by non-Marxist governments is now never mentioned.

And then the scaremongering – if the NPP government were to fail and suffer defeat at the next election, will it pave the way for the return of the Rajapaksas, yet again, but this time under a new generation led by the supposedly hugely talented Namal Rajapaksa? There were pre-election predictions that Namal Rajapaksa and the rump that is left of the SLPP might overtake Sajith Premadasa’s SJB in the LG elections. That did not happen.

The Rajapaksa scion is still safely in third place by quite a distance after the SJB and its lackluster leader, the slightly older but still the only young Premadasa in Sri Lankan politics. For company, they have a really old man, i.e., Ranil Wickremesinghe who is capable of many things, but gracefully retiring is not one of them. At least, and to his credit, he lives in his own house and takes no residential perk at government expense unlike all the other ex-presidential freeloaders.

Philistine Preoccupations

It is not unfair to say that most of these commentaries are nothing but philistine preoccupations passing for serious politics. The word ‘philistine’ was a favourite term of Engels (the second fiddle to Marx’s first violin) and it is appropriate now since Marxism is at the tip of the tongue of everyone who wants to take a shot at the NPP government. The term is also an apt one to fling at the right wing populists, who are now becoming less popular in their western backyards thanks to their greatest specimen – Donald J. Trump

And what a philistine specimen Trump is constantly devolving into – the latest stage being his disgusting White House encounter last Wednesday with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. Less said of it is better for your bile and if you saw it on television you would have instantly noticed the difference between a contemptible mammon out of Florida and a consummate statesman from Soweto.

As epithets are flung around to capture the antics of Trump, the latest comes from the usually measured Paul Krugman, distinguished American economist who was awarded the 2008 Nobel Prize for his work on “trade patterns and location of economic activity.” Krugman knows something about tariffs and economics, and the other day he called Trump and his sidekicks “sadistic zombies”.

Many among the Sri Lankan opposition politicians might be considered zombies, but none of them could be thought of as being sadistic. To close this loop on Trump and his dystopic global presence, one needs to acknowledge his primeval effectiveness in pushing people around to get his way. More so with foreign leaders than his opponents at home. But he uses this effectiveness to feed his ego and enrich his family and not at all to make a difference in the world’s trouble spots where the American government has more sway than anyone else.

This was quite evident on Trump’s recent visit to the Arab world that was all about glitter and one-way gifts including a flying palace, and nothing at all for American foreign policy, let alone for the wretched of the earth in Gaza or the slow burning of Ukraine. One noticeable fact of the visit was Trump’s deliberate snubbing of Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu. Not only did Trump go to Riyad and Doha bypassing Jerusalem but he also sent a message to Netanyahu that he would deal directly with Netanyahu’s enemies including Hamas, Iran and the Houthis. To what great outcome, no one knows. At the same time, Trump’s apparent sidelining of Netanyahu together with the joint condemnation of Netanyahu’s latest Gaza plans by Britain, France and Canada, seemed to tighten the screws on Netanyahu and signaled a new opportunity for reining in Israel’s runaway leader and his notoriously right wing government.

All that came crashing down with the insane assassination, on Wednesday, of two young Israeli Embassy staffers in Washington by a lone gunman, 30 year old Chicago native Elias Rodriguez, shouting “Free, free, Palestine”. All that this politically deranged individual has achieved is to free Netanyahu to go ahead with his Gaza plans and to prolong the misery of the Palestinians who are under constant bombardment in Gaza.

Sri Lanka’s Durable Political System

Today’s Sri Lanka is fortunate to have finally come out of its own decades of political violence, and after several missed opportunities following the end of the war in 2009, the country finally has a government that for its all its inexperience in governing has shown consistent commitment to honesty, decency and transparency. Yet many commentators are rankled by the irony that a government whose political progenitor was a violent insurrectionist could now be a paragon of multi-party democracy.

Their constant allusion to Marxism is really a code for recalling the JVP’s violent past. Never mind that the past had come and gone 30 and 50 years ago. They conveniently ignore the possibility that the JVP could have and may actually have transformed itself from its pre-history to its current manifestation. Its current commitment to the parliamentary system and multi-party democracy is no less authentic than any of the other political parties. If at all the JVP/NPP is more honest about it than every other party.

As well, those who agonize that the JVP might terminate Sri Lanka’s muti-party democracy and opt for some version of the political systems in countries such as Vietnam, China, Russia or even Cuba, fail to take into account the history and the currency of Sri Lanka’s political system that has proved to be quite durable, so much so that any political party that that tries to subvert or supplant it will do so at its own peril. And Sri Lanka’s political system, its history and currency, are not comparable to what are prevalent in the four countries that I have mentioned.

The governing parties in these countries have been in power for as long as their polities have been in existence, and they have no reason to think of changing their respective mode of government now or later. In contrast, the JVP/NPP government has come to power through the electoral process, and it has no incentive to think of changing that process now or later. Sri Lanka’s political system has not been without ailments, and the most debilitating of them has been the presidential system. Of all the political parties, it is only the JVP/NPP that is fervently committed to curing Sri Lanka of that enervating illness. Whether it will keep its promise and succeed in changing the executive presidency is a different matter.

Indian Comparisons

What is more comparable for Sri Lanka and the JVP/NPP government is the experience of the Indian states of Kerala and West Bengal where the Indian Communists have won power through the electoral process on many occasions and have acquitted themselves very well in government. In modern Kerala’s first state election in 1957, EMS Namboodiripad led the then undivided Communist Party of India (CPI) to electoral victory and a new government. That was India’s first elected Communist Government, and the world’s second – after the first elected Communist government (1945-1957) in San Marino, the tiny commune of a country in the Italian peninsula.

But the democratically elected Communist government in Kerala was undemocratically dismissed in 1959 by the Central Government in Delhi, at the insistence of a young Indira Gandhi using her influence as the President of the Congress Party, even sidelining her father and then Prime Minister Nehru. But Communists have since become a governing force in Kerala forming several governments over the years led by the CPM (the Communist Party of India – Marxist), the larger of the two factions that emerged after the Party’s ideological split in 1964. The current government in Kerala is the government of the Left Democratic Front that is led by the CPM. The LDF has been in power since 2016 – winning two consecutive elections, a feat not achieved in 40 years.

In West Bengal, the CPM was in power continuously for 34 years from 1977 to 2011. Jyoti Basu, a Communist leader of national prominence was, Chief Minister of West Bengal from 1977 to 2000 and is recognized as the longest serving Chief Minister in India. In 1996, he was offered the chance to become India’s Prime Minister as head of a United Front alliance of non-Congress and non-BJP parties. But the great Bengali declined the offer in deference to his Party Polit Bureau’s lamebrained doctrinaire decision barring him from becoming Prime Minister in a coalition government. Unlike in Kerala, the CPM has not been able to alternate in government after its defeat in 2011. The Party was decimated in the last Lok Sabha and State Assembly elections by Trinamool Congress a state-level party like the DMK in Tamil Nadu.

What the JVP/NPP has achieved in Sri Lanka is unique to Sri Lanka and, comparable to the Indian situations, the NPP’s electoral success poses no threat to the political system in Sri Lanka. The NPP government has completed only six months in office, but its critics are insistent on seeing results. They will not bother to look at what the present government’s predecessors respectively did in the first six months after elections in 2010, 2015 and 2019.  At the same time, while is still too early for substantial results, it is getting late enough to get by without showing some work in progress, let alone some tangible achievements. It is about time.

            OC,
Today, it’s clear that the only person we can give the “Nation’s Lying King award” to is the current president of Sri Lanka, shattering all previous records set by the former “King-Chetihya”: Even though school-age children knew that Mr. RW, the former president, was the one who settled the dollar value, he boasted about it. The earth-tremoring big lie was revealed by the AKD’s foolish minister, who claimed that the government they overthrew had only 20 million dollars in foreign exchange reserves before their efforts turned it into 6600 million (6.6 billions USD). They are not ashamed, but they keep lying. People are only good at one thing these days: demolishing other people’s property. Isn’t that the case?

As president, AKD still maintains that past leaders have driven vehicles worth between $1 million and $2 million (300-600 millions of LKR). Furthermore, TILIVIN has pledged to receive two billion dollars each month from their supporters supporters in North America and Europe. Remember?__________________ the biggest joke ….. is not it ?

What sort of schooling does TILVIN have?
Does he lack computer literacy? Not long ago, he and his colleague AKD made these public declarations. Furthermore, it is reported that AKD earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Science. What role models can these men provide for the younger generation?

I believe that the top executives, including AKD, Handunetti, TILVIN, Harini, and others, have no idea how much a billion or a million dollars is worth. Sri Lankan media executives are true fools for not putting on any public awareness programs that would have increased public awareness of the issue.

I have researched the worth of a bulletproof vehicle of the Pope in Rome for everyone’s benefit.

The most expensive vehicle ever used by the Pope in Rome is the custom-built Mercedes-Benz G-Class G580 electric Popemobile, valued at approximately $500,000 (0.5 millions USD). This vehicle was presented to Pope Francis in December 2024 and features an open-top design, bulletproof glass, and a hydraulically adjustable central seat to enhance visibility during public appearances.

To shield themselves from any obstacles, Rajapkshes were champions who selectively selected the type of real crime doers. Deepthi’s performance is crucial for their impending political event; I’ve been observing how MaRa’s son, BASTARD, is wearing his “Satakaya,” or blood-soaked towel, around his neck. In order to continuously mislead the donkeys in human disguise in our society, Satakaya is essential. This country won’t change until the beasts in human disguise are gone for a few more decades.

Dear Paul and all other rational thinkers,
This estranged individual has a strong bond with the Rajapkshe propaganda unit. No doubt about that.
As you are aware, Rajapkashes were able to manage matters through their Sinhala communities in Africa, Asia-Pacific, North America, and Europe.
They employed men in African states at the time to maintain the momentum in support of their popularity politics. “Deepthi” is currently working for these women, men, or eunachs through a variety of avatars. You will discover this sooner rather than later if any of you continue to criticize Rajakshes and their criminal Mlechcha politics. For Moeny, Deepthi would perform any menial task. She spends more time on “tHUMB UP Meter” each day than she does in the little boy’s room.

        .
What happens if the individual is never raised to do so?

More Deepthi-like creatures will appear in SL among older age groups than younger ones the longer you stay there. They believe they are superior for some reason. They resemble well-dwelling frogs. In actuality, they don’t even understand the fundamentals of anything. that you and OC demonstrated regarding the subjects brought up by Lester, who was hibernating. Do you recall?

For whatever reason, the abusive Deepthi has been attacking people like a little honey budger attacks large animals. She, he, or the eunach might have been raped and discovered by brutalities in the past Life, or might have experienced all the unexpected in her adult lives (untold stories). Maintaining a condescending attitude toward her or him should always be a genuine psychological symptom. The fact is that he doesn’t seem to understand a lot of the comments that are posted on CT. Why in the world is the beast in human form unable to relate to the agenda that has been assigned to her or him? Hilarious !

Dear Scott I always thought you were a decent bloke. Yes the UNP and PA corruption is fundamental to the ruin of the country. I will also add the fundamental corruption of South Asian culture, including the clergy. Even the Christian clergy is more South Asian than the real thing. More worship and less service ! Their poses and beliefs are the ingredients of what we see there.

It is true about the politics of Southern or Sinhalese speaking people but it is only partly true but mostly doubtful about the NPP’s/JVPs or AKD government. You talked about Indian model of leftism with Kerala in the South but Kerala is one of the partially devolved government. It is not a Central government. Unfortunately NPP thinks devolution of power is bad like other governments of Sri Lanka for seven decades. North East Tamil people are afraid that under the unitary system their identity will be wiped out under unitary system. Since they have two third majority now, NPP have to show some signs towards devolution of power. Will they do it?

I am aware of Tamils national parties keeping out of negotiating with NPP for the matters you are talking about, though they have a history of continuously negotiating. My understanding is Sumanthiran was only looking for a Minister position that NPP has already said that Tamils leaders are not getting it because they did not support NPP in the EP election. Can you explain the Tamil National parties’ behaviors in the EP election?

“At the same time, while is still too early for substantial results, it is getting late enough to get by without showing some work in progress, let alone some tangible achievements. It is about time.”
Yes, the NPP should talk less and do more. In particular, it should do something about the Executive Presidency, which it swore blind to remove, along with the PTA. It seems that the NPP has discovered the advantages of both, since it has used the PTA to arrest Duminda Dissanayake. Optics apart, what are the advantages that accrue to the economy from these dramatic arrests? Is salt getting less scarce, or electricity cheaper. If the NPP is not as popular as it was six months ago, it has only its own over-the-top promises to blame. It promised lower fuel and energy prices on the totally ludicrous premise that corruption was the cause of high prices. Now it is stuck in a cleft stick between the IMF and a grumbling populace. Welcome to reality, comrades, and welcome to reality, voters.

      Hello OC,
      .
NPP does not, in my opinion, anticipate the threat. It is the insufficient experience. The death of Manel Fonseka and the way the Queen of Lanken Cinnama was treated resulted in a greater number of voters—2.3 million out of 6.8 million—than before. They are becoming more and more foolish to the public as a result of their haughty TV-screen behavior. Those who used to disparage Rajapkshes have now started to speak well of them. Some people no longer view Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka as a hero because he is attempting to collaborate with AKD. However, AKD’s capabilities are not as strong as they seem. He is skilled and competent at lying, but nothing more.

We all ridiculed when former President Sirisena stated that the nation’s cultural ties are stronger than anything else on this island.
        The simple truth is that.
Just take a look at how people have been emotionally erasing Rajapkshes and all of their serious crimes over the past few days since Malani Fonseka passed away last week. I don’t mind that she was given five million SLRupees or more to care for her, but Meida’s spokesperson hurt a lot of people in this country by criticizing it more than was necessary. That severely damaged Jeppos’s popularity. Furthermore, I doubt that even a small number of millions of people today fully support them.

  • 5
    2

    Rajan,
You raise an important point about tangible achievements and timing. But doesn’t the NPP’s disappointing performance in the recent local government elections—particularly in the North and East—speak directly to this?
Many Tamils and Muslims supported the NPP during the general elections, hoping it would mark a decisive break from the ethnonationalist politics that have long plagued Sri Lanka. Yet since then, the party has appeared reluctant to confront the deep-rooted issues that matter most to these communities. The repeated rhetoric of “we are all equal” has begun to feel more like a slogan than a sincere commitment. For many, it’s starting to look like the tiger hasn’t changed its spots.
Take, for instance, the ongoing military occupation of civilian lands and the indefinite detention of Tamil prisoners without trial. These are not merely unresolved legal matters—they are profound moral failures. Addressing them boldly would have signalled genuine transformation and helped the NPP consolidate minority support, possibly evolving into a truly national movement.
Then there’s the NPP’s response to the recent Tamil genocide memorial in Canada. Denying or downplaying genocide and collective trauma is not just politically short-sighted—it deepens alienation. If the NPP has nothing to hide, why not support an independent international inquiry and commit to accepting its findings? That would demonstrate real political maturity and moral clarity.

    • 4

” If the NPP has nothing to hide, why not support an independent international inquiry and commit to accepting its findings? That would demonstrate real political maturity and moral clarity.”
It is the responsibility of the AKD/NPP to say something about the genocide of the Tamils since 1958 until 2024? Are they here to safeguard the past 77 years Sinhala leaders like Rajapaksas, Gotabaya’s and their counter parts Weerawanse, Gammanpila or not? Did AKD accept the statement of his Foreign Minister on using law against those Tamils who lost their lives by Military?

        Ajith
, To pursue the 77-curse, which was only spread by Jeepos to seize power by deceiving the prevailing MERCY COW mentality in our hellhole, is foolish of you, Ajith.
Even though Jeppos blamed others, experts now think that they are caught in the act and are incapable of handling even supplying the country with a consistent supply of salt, let alone performing miracles as promised.
Rumor has it that we will be in a dire situation because the incumbent government has not properly negotiated a reduction in Trump’s tariffs, and GSP Plus will no longer be granted to Sri Lanka. There are no skilled professionals in the government, unlike in Mr. RW Basta’s short-lived administration.

The Philistines ……. are roaming free ……. now that the Pharisee has exited.

      Hello Nimal,
The Philistines (Ancestors of the Palestinians) get a bad press. Ever since the collapse of the Late Bronze Age Civilisations in around 1200 BCE many have blamed the Sea Peoples for this. The Phillistines (Peleset) were probably part of the Sea Peoples Confederation and invaded the Gaza area of Palestine. Goliath was reputed to have been a Philistine. These people wore Tasseled Kilts, used Round Shields and Chariots, much like the Picts’ Scythian Ancestors.
So now I understand my deep rooted support for the Gazans in the Historical Context.
And just for DTG “Free Palestine”, these are my cousins from long ago.
      Best regards

LankaScot, it’s ok to support your Gazan cousins but Palestine is not in the bible and Gaza belongs to Judah of Israel. Joshua 15,47. The philistines came from the Mediterranean and they were not Arabs like Goliath of Gath. Palestine is still struggling to steal Israel land and set unacceptable land boundaries, and take undivided Jerusalem meant for return of resurrected Jesus back to earth.

          DTG
I was waiting for you to come out with some outrageous crap.
Your blind faith most probably inspired by some devious pastor is disgusting.
In my view you don’t appear as a follower of Jesus Christ and his humane teaching.
You must be a member of some Nigerian Pentecostal church.
You are hanging onto some corrupted devilish ugly story and it is being passed as the word of God from the bible.
Which lousy bible are you following?
If you are ready to defend the truth in your so called bible, I will ask you 10 questions that are contradictory, if you can answer them correctly, I will give you kudos.
          Do you accept the challenge?

          Hello DTG,
Where in the Bible does it say Goliath was an Arab? According to my memory Goliath was a Philistine and came from Gath https://www.holylandsite.com/gath-tel-es-safi
Have a look at the Archaeological Site (Gath) in the Link.

        LS,
Were these Philistines Whisky drinkers and Haggis eaters?

old codger, these philistines were after Israel land but God allowed the boy David to kill the Goliath giant with a sling stone to his vulnerable uncovered forehead. Later, Goliath’s brothers too got killed. That is the fate of those who steal Israel land.

          Old,
LankaScot bluffed once more. He writes great tales like Mahanama, but fundamentally, they make no substance and are utterly contradictory to common sense and science. Philistines are a god-fearing West Asians crowd. There is no way a runaway atheist comes out of those crowds. Jewism, Christianity, Islam, and Zoroastrianism….. all and more came from the area, who are number on designing and scripting in religions for hobby and bowling entertainment. Lanka Scot, is from Lala, arrived as the 702nd, in those ships with his brethren. When the boat people came to Ceylon, they did not have any religion, so Buddha had to be imported on an express shipment to cure and cool the rowdy-hot boat people. The unfortunate status then was that the Pandian King sent only 701, so LankaScot married a Sinhala Buddhist Lady, unlike all boat people who had the chance to marry a Hindu Tamil lady.
(His talks never had any meaning. He dies hard the very second to wake up all mythical tales, dead and composed into nature. How is that he is claiming with the Philistines, when though he is from a cut and dried racist Colonial Aryan Group? He is a noisy, pesky divisive sparrow, practice divide and rule, Colonial Maxim. After all, Israeli Jews are certified Western Aryan race.)

“After all, Israeli Jews are certified Western Aryan race.)”
They aren’t any more “Aryan” than you. Not according to one Adolf Hitler anyway.. I think you would be in deep shit if you called a Jew an Aryan to his face.🤣🤣

              Old.
Israeli Jews acknowledging who they are, and in reality, who they are two different subjects. Are there any true Aryans in Langkang? If you tell a Ceylonese that, between 2000–1500 years ago, the Dravidian Tamils living on the island started to speak their language mixed with Pali. Around when, Pali stopped being used to speaking, and pundits elevated their home languages to written and liturgical works. There we go, we got the new language called Sinhala, about 1500 years ago. I don’t know, you know it or not. Around 1995, I was working for a Canadian Pharmaceutical company that had a branch in NYC. The guy working with me had a lot of history knowledge. One time, our talk turned about American Indians and the way the government treated them. He said if one had 5% Native blood, he/she could apply for native status and the grants assigned for them. I asked him how the natives benefited by allocating 95% benefits for whites, in the name of Natives. First, I thought I should be jealous of Natives, then I said to myself “not at all, because considering all that happened to the poor population in the past centuries.” He said that even if we were saving only 5% blood, saving the Native blood was preventing them from zeroing out extension.

So, like the White Natives having the First Nation for them, the Aryan Jews got Israel for them. World over, if a woman marries a Muslim, she will be absorbed into Islam. Unlike American Indians or Israeli Jews, they don’t become Arabians automatically. To mitigate this, Hezbollah and other Muslim Ministers have started to turn the Eastern towns to look like Arabian towns. Some may say “just by walking like a swan, a crow cannot become a Swan”. But I guess you will agree that if a land looks like Arabia, if a nation walks like Arabia, if those people there quack like Arabian, sure, they are pure Arabians, in their minds.

          Hello OC,
If you have ever tasted Middle Eastern Kibbeh, I think that it is very like Haggis. Maybe the Scots should try a Yoghurt Sauce with Haggis (kibbeh labanieh). As for the Whisky, Philistines being from Crete (possibly), they might be Dionysians and partial to a wee Dram.

            LS,
Philistines being pre-Islamic, they might well have tippled a bit. Kibbeh is closer to our local “cutlets” than Haggis, I think. Did you know that “arrack” is derived from Arabic?

        .
You don’t need to be personally connected to a group of people to feel empathy for their suffering. What is happening in Gaza is a massacre—by every measure, a genocide.
        .
In the face of injustice, any fair-minded individual should be able to recognize the truth and stand with those who are being oppressed. That, I believe, is a fundamental human trait.
        .
This is precisely the message we hope to convey to readers on CT:
Stand for what is right, regardless of your affiliations with those who are in the wrong.

          Hello Human Touch,
“You don’t need to be personally connected to a group of people to feel empathy for their suffering”. That is true, but doesn’t apply to some of the Contributors to the CT Comments
If you have seen any of my posts on Gaza you will see that I have consistently decried the Genocide being carried out by Israel and the Complicity of the US, the UK and until very recently most European Countries. Way back in 1967 I was the only one in my Class to denounce the Israeli Six Day War. Even my friend who was a Communist Party sympathiser was a bit “mealy mouthed” about it.
Immediately after October 7th I posted that Israel had started the process of attempting to remove the Palestinians and take over Gaza fulfilling DTG and Netanyahu’s ambitions “From the River to the Sea”. They want to cleanse Gaza and the West Bank of Palestinians who by the way are the descendants of Philistines and Semitic Peoples and have been there for Thousands of years.
If you noticed my post was in reply to Nimal who usually injects some Humour into these Columns.
          Best regards

            Hello LankaScot,
Every evil around the world has an element of complicity of the US.
