The Pragmatic Christian Consolation That Prompts Defiance In Defeat

By Asoka N.I. Ekanayaka

Prof. Asoka N.I. Ekanayaka

The defeat of Sajith Premadasa in the Presidential election  has no doubt been a bitter blow for the 5½ million people who, loved  his personality, and were convinced by his sincerity of purpose. They were inspired by his vision and idealism. They could sense that there was something refreshing and exciting about the brand  of leadership he represented. They had great expectations that he would be the one to lead Sri Lanka into a new and enlightened culture of governance upholding such values as equality, incorruptibility, and justice. Finally they were delighted  with the prospect that he would set the tone in ensuring that henceforth rulers would be committed to sacrifice, hard work  and a simple life style eschewing high and mighty privilege and pomposity, in the great  tradition of being servants of the people not their masters.

All this was not to be. The emotions of supporters who are sullenly licking their wounds in humiliating defeat at this moment  may include depression, disappointment and a sense of hopelessness. Others depending on temperament may bristle with rage, resentment and disgust  Still others with their hopes dashed and prayers seemingly unanswered may be confused and disillusioned wondering why in the affairs of nations notwithstanding the best intentions of decent people so often good does not seem to triumph over evil. Nor are they helped by the cowardice and worldly diplomacy of politicians who with an eye on their own political future  meekly cower before the victor and wish him well whose nature remains unchanged.

In this situation one might expect that many people in their anguish and frustration might fall back on their religious faith for consolation and some kind of understanding that would enable them to emotionally and intellectually come to terms with what has happened. This article seeks to set down how a Christian for his part reconciles himself philosophically based on the teachings in God’s spoken word in scripture ( the Bible ). Such a Christian perspective is admittedly radically different. It might appear outlandish and make no sense to many. But it needs to be stated and hopefully people of other faiths, Buddhist, Hindu and  Islam  would join in the conversation by explaining how at a dispiriting time like this they might find consolation within their own religious tradition.

From a Christian perspective  the first thing to say is that Sajith Premadasa’s defeat comes as no surprise whatsoever. It is frequently said that people get the government they deserve. It would be more accurate to say that in a fallen world  of sinful humanity where most people are selfish, mercenary, corrupt, bigoted and stupid they choose leaders after their own values, attitudes and prejudices. As the old quotation has it “Like attracts like”.Sinful subjects don’t vote saints to rule over them. Nor do bad people vote for good governments. It is a simple principle that holds true all over the world.

The Bible teaches that human sinfulness is universal. It emphasises the total depravity and spiritual blindness of unregenerate mankind on the planet in all ages. It records that from the dawn of history “the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually where the earth was corrupt in God’s sight and the earth was filled with violence”. Corruption and violence indeed ! What a fitting description of human communities at home and abroad in our own day and age.

And no one is exempt from the stark reality of sinfulness in the depths of the human soul. According to the great apostle Paul writing to Christians in Rome around 57 AD “None is righteous, no not one; no one understands; no one seeks God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one” In the same letter Paul bluntly spells out the characteristics of sinful humanity who having a debased mind  are “filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice, envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness, gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless”.

Despite outward pretentions  that is the scope and magnitude of sinfulness that lurks in our own hearts and underneath the sanctimonious humbug of false religion in human societies in Sri Lanka and throughout the world. That is the Christian diagnosis of the human condition. That is the default position of every voter who enters a polling booth. So it comes as no surprise that all over the world sinful society should vote for those in their own image. It would be a contradiction if they didn’t. That is the pragmatic Christian consolation in times like this.

The ultimate example of this reality was the fate of the historical Jesus who came down to earth as the Son of God to save sinners. He lived a perfectly sinless  life of infinite compassion and selfless service to his people. He was the long expected Messiah  who had come to preach the good news of salvation to his people, liberate them from sin and death, reconcile them to God and show them the path to eternal life. Yet, given the sinful humanity his people represented  he was despised and rejected  before being brutally tortured  and finally executed by being nailed to a cross. Given the choice  between Jesus and a notorious terrorist called Barabbas the crowd by popular choice ‘voted’ to release Barabbas ! The pattern has been repeated innumerable times  over the centuries as voters in the depravity of their human nature so vulnerable to psychological manipulation false propaganda and plain bribery have voted, exalting evil over good, falsehood over truth, injustice over justice. Such understanding is the basis of the Christian’s pragmatic consolation.

That popular democracy works in that way in every nation in every age is perfectly logical. For example, why should we expect populations with a penchant for violence to vote for rulers who are committed to uphold the rule of law ? It doesn’t make sense ! Why should we expect millions of ordinary people who are in their own way corrupt in daily life – to vote for incorruptible leaders ? It doesn’t make sense. Or take the specific case of thousands of mercenary government doctors who don’t care a hoot for medical ethics, aggressively make  millions in the private sector and backed by the medical thuggary of a ruthless trade union enjoy the right to strike with impunity endangering the lives of patients. Why should we expect them to vote for rulers who might amend the Medical Act, ban strikes by doctors and discipline the medical profession ? It does not make sense.

Equally why  should we expect the affluent selfish business classes to vote for a socially sensitive government that might raise taxes where they may have to settle for a plain Toyota instead of a luxury Benz ? And then there are the millions of ordinary folk who fatally intoxicated by the superstition, mythology, fantasies and  historical distortions of Mahavamsa Buddhism believe that Sri Lanka belongs to the Buddhists with ethnic and religious minorities welcome to remain and be treated kindly like pet cats and dogs provided they know their place in the scheme of things. Why should we expect them to vote for liberal enlightened  rulers who tilt towards a secular society and believe in the rights of minorities and the dignity and equality of all citizens ? Why should we expect a degenerate Buddhist establishment comprising numerous corrupt ferocious monks who probably wish that minorities did not exist, to promote anybody other than those who reflect the image of its own racist aspirations ? Such expectations are wholly unrealistic.

The human heart darkened by sin is programmed to turn away from the light. That is the harsh reality. Jesus said “ The light has come into the world and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their deeds were evil”. Given the universal depravity of sinful mankind on the planet the Bible sets the bottom line: “We know that we are from God and the whole world lies in the power  of the evil one”. It is a world that has for the present gone to the devil under whose influence human nature blinded by sin is basically bad.

The understanding of  this unpleasant truth is the Christian’s pragmatic consolation when people cast their ballot having put their God given conscience to sleep – as in July 1932 when 37.4 % of the German population voted for Adolph Hitler who went on to exterminate over 6 million Jewish people. But this pragmatic understanding of human behaviour is always mixed with a glorious hope where Christians are defiant in defeat whatever the electoral battlefield .

Christians may walk through a minefield of consequences resulting from the tragic choices of their misguided fellow citizens. They may have to endure the bitterness and malevolence of those like the ‘educated’ woman who posted a disgusting insensitive fake picture of Sajith Premadasa in LTTE attire on Facebook, even though his own father had been assassinated by a LTTE suicide bomber !

Notwithstanding Christians walk with the supreme assurance  of their eternal security in God’s glorious plan of salvation for his people. It is the overarching divine plan for humanity  that overrides the puny plans of proud men elected by a debased electorate who “strut and fret their hour upon the stage and then are heard no more” – until  the terrible day of reckoning at the end of the age when they will inexorably have to account for their evil deeds before the eternal Judge of all men. Meanwhile Christians go on their way singing with the great reformer Martin Luther (1483-1546) :

And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us,
We will not fear, for God hath willed His truth to triumph through us.
The Prince of Darkness grim, we tremble not for him;
His rage we can endure, for lo! His doom is sure, One little word shall fell him.

    Prof. Ekanayaka,
Noooo…..God doesn’t want our ancient Island to be merged with India. Sinhalese want their autonomy and sovereignty. The election result was never about being good or bad; it was about the Indian takeover vs. United Lanka (although a bit of India is good).

      Dear Prof! In addition,
Did you want us to vote the man who represented/safeguarded the forces that:
      1. strangled us (with various taxes) slowly and gradually so that we would have a seemingly natural death.
      2. bombed us at churches and hotels by killing and miming over 1500 unarmed kids, elders, and tourists (Easter Sunday attack).
      3. tried to separate the country through the so called economic corridor (MCC).
      4. did nothing to develop the economy. (we are behind even Afghanistan now).
      5. looted Central Bank in broad day light, not just once but twice.
      6. humiliated the majority Sinhalese in the name of so-called reconciliation.
      7. ruined the Rupee value in an unprecedented manner.
      8. sold our national assets for peanuts for illegal $$$ commissions.
      9. Promised heaven on earth but created hell within a period of 4 years (probably the shorted possible time in the hell’s history).
      10. created divisions within citizens and created the same within themselves (Maithree-Ranil and Ranil-Sajith tug of wars).
      11. failed to realize the value of traditions, ethos, and socio-cultural relations within a complex society.
      12. believed that their wish can be put in the constitution as an amendment and that needs to be followed by voters slavishly with no question asked (19th amendment).
At the upcoming parliamentary election, these guys will learn their next lesson. Please stay tuned!

Aunty Ramona all Chingkallams are from India and most from ancient Thamizhlakam( Modern day Thamizh Nadu /Kerala) and the vast majority descended from recent imports from Thamizh South India ,just like your Fernando ancestors. Chingkallams want their autonomy and sovereignty but use their brute majority and government resources to deny this to the island’s Thamizh , who have the same right. You have run away to the west and like many Chingkallams , posting in this forum and enjoy the freedom and equality that the west offers to you but want/espouse racism , dictatorship , genocide and ethnic cleansing and discrimination to continue back home in the name of Chingkalla Buddhist Fascist cult. You are a disgusting old woman. Please visit your ancestral homeland Thamizh Nadu in India and take 70% of the present day Chingkallams to , as this is their homeland too.

That is why President Gotabaya Rajapakse make his fast @ first visit to India, not to China or Russia. What about Buddhism? Is it for Srilanka and Myanmar? Do you think Sinhalese are born to Lions? Do you think Mrs Gotabaya divorced his American wife?

Old cow Ramona Therese Fernando, you have actually gone crazy. How the heck do you know what God was thinking? He called you last night? Also which God are you talking of, Buddha? When did he become God? The country has already been taken over by the Chinese in the south and the indians in the north. So what are you cackling about? You foolish cow, sitting in the USA talking trash.

        Ramona,

I am so sorry you have to suffer this verbal abuse at the hands of these vulgar fellows.

Right or wrong you are entitled to your opinion. Frankly, I do not agree with you. I beleive Sri Lanka is for Moslems and Tamils. LOL!

But either case, when you are in a public forum which is frequented by Tamils you have to expect these.

You first learn to talk to a woman. See how you abused her in dirty language here.

Cleaning Toilets is not our profession but it certainly yours and your forefathers were known for.

            RFT,

Just ignore this thing. It happens when you have to deal with fellas like this whom in Sri Lanka you wouldn’t even allow to cross the boundaries of your property even.

We are not used to dealing with such types because until we came to Colombo Telegraph we’ve never met such nefarious characters.

            Keep contributing with your opinions.

Retarded clown and army mascot Shemale Perehera, in SL since you were the majority and had the armed forces on your side, you bullied the minorities. No more, if you open your filthy mouth in a foreign country you will get your teeth knocked out. You are giving lessons on how to speak to a woman? Aren’t you that army goddaya coolie who boasted about raping the northern girls? What are girls? Aren’t they women? Disgusting filth like you some or other joined the army and even there only managed to rise to the low rank of a lieutenant.
You disgusting bas$ard, I know you live somewhere in Ontario. Ado you little sh%t, my forefathers were high ranking officials in the government, where coolies like you made tea for them at work and home. You cannot handle that the minorities can slap you silly in a foreign country. The situation was quite different about 50 years ago, when most of these folks or their forefathers were living in SL where you uneducated thugs bullied them and murdered them.
SL for Sinhalese? Keep dreaming you dumb arse. Look around you, we are like the Jews, once you tried to wipe us off the face of this earth. But today look around you……Tamils are everywhere in foreign Governments, medical profession, legal, engineering, banking and businesses. You are quite possibly working as a messenger for a Tamil. What can an uneducated army mascot do after he retired from a 3rd world army? You had a boundary to your property, I never knew shacks came with boundaries. Nefarious character? Were you looking in the mirror while you were typing this? You said…..’you first learn to talk……..’ from when did you think you can order me around bas$ard?

    My dear Prof Ekanayake

The UNF government was the most incompetant government.
Simply because Sajith came to power the chances of all that social justice happening is negligible.

Christians had only two choices Mr G Rajapaksha or Sajith.

After the bitter Easter Sunday BOMING that were allowed by the disfunctional UNF yahapalanaya humbugs.

The sensible choice was voting Gota – at least Christians can worhip in peace.

Mr Rajapaksha is a capable leader with a logical approach.

so as a Christian I wish him well

As we have been instructed to obey the prevailing government and do your duty as if we are doing it to God.

Comparing Mr Gotabhaya to Hitler is not acceptable especially from an educated person such as your self.

    Prof ANL Ekanayaka,

(self appointed spoks person for Christians)

Mr Gotabhaya Rajapaksha is heaps better than Sajith for Christians

Sajith’s buddy Harin Fernado did not go to Church on Easter Sunday because his Daddy warned him of the bomb threat as he had inside information. It never crossed his mind to inform the Bishop and government authorities and try to stop the carnage.
300 + Christians and others that were targeted died, made disabled, orphaned , widowed , traumatised while Harin Fernano and family
    living happily ever after!!!!
Are you seriously thinking that these types of scum will stand by the Christians?
Prof you are living in La La land – work hand in hand with the common man and learn the pulse of the nation without trying to mislead the general population of Sri Lanka.
Mr GOTABHAYA RAJAPAKSHA is the only hope for Christians at this point.
The UNP should never ever be trusted if you are in the right mind.
God is in control that is why Mr G is the President – Praise the Lord!!!!

Aiyo! Prof! What is wrong with you in dragging Jesus Christ’s teaching christianity here? It is utterly unwanted and you hit the ceiling by saying “Christians may walk through a minefield of consequences resulting from the tragic choices of their misguided fellow citizens.” Even the UNP, the party who fielded Sajith, knows the need to rejuvenate, NOT YOU. Don’t forget the vote of a heavy bulk of christians for Gotabaya particularly after the attack of 4/21 and Prof do you also drag them for a walk through a minefield of consequences? We all have hidden preferences in our hearts though we attempt to be rational and objective. If you really wanted to promote the preference of your heart you should have called for changes particularly after the local government elections. Prof! This quotation should be familiar to you. “None are so blind than those who will not see.”

Jesus Christ… My Elite Lady friend put lots of Posters of Keselwatta Prema on her FB.
And she worships at the New Born Church..

I didn’t think even she was that depressed..Although she has eased off putting those Posters and Motivational Quotes .

This Gentleman seems to be really down in the dumps to pick up the Book of Genesis to get consolation.

Keselwatta Preme may have lost the Battle ,
May be that might help him win the War..
And become the new Leader of his Old Man’s UNP…

If the Kid can do that ,to me it will be a better achievement than winning the Presidency .
Specially after watching the Two Yahapalana Leaders departing Speeches.

This thing about people deserving things..
.I am sure those 7 Million Souls surely must have seen something wrong with what they deserved watching the Yahapalanaya and its Leaders for 4 1/2 years.

Those Christians should not read about the UNP at present .
It may make the Depression worse.
Now the Sirikotha seems to be in open War with Keselwatta Kid’s . Slave Island HQs, even after Dr Ranil has said Adios.

    Wonder what next?…

Anyway my Catholic Friends are happy, Bathudeen and Rauf Hakeem also have gone with Dr Ranil…
And Hesbolla was turned away by the Pohottuwa Guards at the inauguration..

    Dear Dr. Ekanayake
The best is to keep away from politics. In countries with periodically conducted elections , it is inevitable that a section of the people always face disappointment. One needs not agitate the depth of soul to find solace in these frequent, mundane affairs. Many have found that alcohol is equally effective and a cheaper alternative. Defeat of Sajith is not an earth shattering cosmic event. I don’t remember you offering US the same sermon in 2015. We were saddened a bit, foul mouthed everyone as ungrateful bastards, pulled us through anyhow and organised a big rally in Nugegoda. It was forward march from that point onwards. TODAY YOUNGER BROTHER IS PRESIDENT AND THE ELDER BROTHER PRMEIMINISTER!
That is the way to go. This kind of deep soul searching may lead even to suicide. Advise your UNP mates to reflect on bank robberies, insulting yelow robes and open display of ingratitude to those village boys who sacrificed their life and limb to save this Nation AND and come out with a clean Christian confession.

    Prof. Ekanayaka,
You have put forward a lot of Christian reasons to keep calm in adverse times. But even Buddhism has a fundamental principle: EVERYTHING is subject to change. Even Gota is impermanent. Some people mellow in their 70’s. Others go ga-ga. Let’s see, shall we?

Brilliant. Prof. Asoka Ekanayaka, you have explained very clearly the Christian take on all that is happening around us. The situation in this country is of particular relevance but it does give the right perspective in understanding world events as well. This is commendable coming from a Christian layman, when some of our so called Eminent church leaders seem to have lost their way.

    Dear Professor Ekanayaka,
Undoubtedly some voters are disappointed with the result. I am a minority who thought that both candidates were suitable, and both offered some hope, although one cannot predict the future. No one is 100% perfect, and I do not expect them to be.
I would like to agree with you that voters make bad choices, but to be fair, we have to go back to 1956 with the Sinhala only campaign of the late Hon. Premier S.W.R.D Bandaranaike. Voters and candidates stem from society, and if society changes, we can have better politics. Back then, did voters make a mistake? Did Prime Minister Bandaranaike realize his mistake?
You are probably aware that the Bible you quote commands us to be subject to all authority. In fact, just as the sufferings of Jesus Christ were for a purpose, so is it with the citizens of a country, but also we may experience blessings from a government, for which I see little evidence of gratitude.
No government can prevent a person from doing good. No government can overturn personal belief. There is a better way. The love we should have as Christians should extend to government officials. The forgiveness we should have also should extend that far. There are innumerable opportunities to do 3good while working with this and any goverment and any other government.
No government will take kindly to rebellion or attempts to overthrow it, and some theologians say rebellion is an evil thing. In this country it has certainly proved to have been a great evil, in 71, 83, 89 and at other times. Riots are evil. Those who want to write about things that will get them into trouble will have to make the decision if that is the best thing to do. Why not work peacefully to bring change?

Human history traced back to million years , history of religions goes back max 2500 yrs. So how justifiable is it to explain something from religions perspective.

Understand the mental agony Prof Asoka going through. We can only sympathise with him. Not sure whether he is suffering from depression, disappointment and a sense of hopelessness bristle with rage, resentment and disgust or as his hopes dashed and prayers seemingly unanswered may be confused and disillusioned. Therefore we might have to give some time for him to cope with those emotions and become mentally stable.

However we have to point out that the overwhelming majority of Sinhala Christians alongside with their fellow Buddhist brothers and sisters chose Gotabaya over Asoka’s prodigy Sajith. Entire Catholic belt voted for Gotabaya except Negombo and marginally in Wattala. I believe they have followed Christian values in making their choices. They would have seen the kind of lies and mud slinging Sajith’s campaign employed and would have decided Gotabaya was comparatively much more civilised and more compatible with Christian values in his approach before (and since becoming president).

I am wondering if this is indeed the Christian perspective!
What were the condition of the ‘people’ when the Rajapaksha’s were defeated in 2015? How did they change from ‘good’ to ‘bad’ in 5 years?

So the people in the whole world is corrupt and degraded. Perhaps that was why God created a world-wide flood and saved only one ‘good man’ and of course a few of his relations (how good were they? We do not know). But that experiment proved a failure and soon after receiving offering of meat and wine from Noah he promised not to destroy the earth by a flood. But he still will destroy it -this time he has promised to destroy the earth by fire (2 Peter 3:10, 11; Revelation 20:9, 21:1 ) in the terrible events known as the “day of the Lord.”
After that, he will choose a few people who fully believed in him to go to heaven and to the others “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels” (Matthew 25:41). Our new President did much better -he said that he will be the President of all regardless of how they voted.
In fact if these ‘Christian’ stories are correct ‘God all mighty’ is far worse that Hitler and Pol Pot who killed people opposed to him but did not torture then for an eternity.
Dear Prof Ekanayake -I would appreciate your comments onthe above

Let Prof.ANI answer CR. You quote Mat. 25,41 Hell was prepared by God for Lucifer, the devil and his fallen 1/3rd dark angels who today influence evil in the world. God wants humans created lovingly in his image to receive him willingly for eternity with the good angels. Deceiving worship craving cherub satan Ezekiel 28,14 will drag them into hell with their false worship of him as “gods”. God warns in bible of the sure consequences of evil, so men can avoid it. Before Noah’s flood, before Adam, after Genesis 1,1 serpent like long bodied cherub imaged mixed DNA, created dinosaurs which God destroyed with flood. Noah’s flood Genesis 6 destroyed all corrupted flesh of DNA mixtures with angelic DNA, creating Nephilim giants. Today forbidden DNA mixing with animals for so-called health purposes, handled by evil leaders, who also have nuclear weapons, is God warned destruction by fire.

C Ratnayake, the Bible is largely “pagan” mythology. The whole thing was written by Jews who lived under the yoke of various civilizations – Sumeria, Assyria, Babylonia, Egypt, etc. The good professor talks about the “Son of God.” Take the middle word away and you are left with “Son God” which sounds like “Sun God.” The ancient Aryans worshipped the Sun, as did the Egyptians and various Greek cults. In Iran, the Sun god was called Mithras, in Egypt his name was Osiris, and in Greece, Dionysus. Unfortunately for the Church, this Sun God liked to drink wine, enjoy women, and fly his chariot through the sky. So they created a watered down version named “Jesus.” But the rituals (devotions) which the Christians perform are exactly the same – drinking wine, celebrating “Christmas”, honoring a “virgin” mother, etc.

      • 0
        0

Lester, Your derogatory omniscience (know all) attitude against altered counterfeit Christian devotions, is not appreciated. Jesus is not a watered down Sun, which he created to give light by day. Some prefer to worship the visible sun than the invisible God. God’s supernatural power implanted God’s DNA in a virgin to produce the only sinless human on earth who could be a substitute sacrifice for sin or karma. All religions offer blood or fruit sacrifices to some god or the other. Robes are considered righteous if the power of God comes on it. All our Buddhist leaders are pilgrims in India to Hindu gods and hold statues tight to bare chest, hoping to absorb power for governing. Buddha was born and cremated a Hindu.
Wine represents sinless blood of animals or the one human, for sacrifice. Above all, blood/wine represents the covenant or pledge between God and his created man to give all for the benefit of the other, the divine exchange promised, at the horrible crucifixion of Jesus scourged with the sin of all humanity. His response was prayer, “Father forgive them for they know not what they do” This enabled his sinless resurrection, to exchange sin for forgiveness, releasing his unconditional love for all humans. Unless love is accepted and spiritually experienced, it makes no sense to critics using intellectual rational minds in realm of their souls only.

Citizen, people worshipped the Sun for thousands of years because it gave life. This is scientifically correct, as we now know the carbon reactions that take place in living organisms are not possible without sunlight. Whether people are “saved” through what you Christians call “salvation” cannot be proved or disproved, but it is a fact that life is not possible without the energy from sunlight.

Lester, Why worship the sun because as you say, sunlight gives energy for chemical reactions in body and creation. Laser energy gives sight to blind. Radiation energy kills cancer cells. Microwave energy cooks our food outside occult auspicious times. Worshipping the sun never birthed a human baby which has life. It’s the unseen life giver alone who can create both life and also the light of the sun for the day. Are we dead at night without the sun. What about winter?. What about the North and South poles for most of the year when sun is not visible. What about those who think worship of sun is an abomination and a counterfeit idol worship of the only one true and Living creator and redeemer God of the universe. He created man in his image with a free will to choose to worship either him or the sun or any other created thing. These choices have consequences. But it may seem to make no sense to some. But to others, their own liberating personal experience of sins forgiven and removal of ancestral karmic life flowing into them, is all that is needed for salvation, deliverance and healing. Those who are doubting can always pray to Jesus for manifestation, if he is alive. Try and see.

Yes Prof. ANI, it does not make sense to vote except towards our self image. In this world full of evil, it does not make sense to promote excellence while we are insecure about ownership of a piece of earth called by our own name. We brought nothing into this world and take away nothing away. Neither can future generations own the earth which belongs to its maker. While here, the robbers, murderers, plunderers, destroyers, cheaters, envious liars make hay, but does not make sense for righteousness and justice.

Elected President NGR’s call is to unify the land as he knows what it is to be a well treated minority in a foreign christian land based on a constitution from the bible in Isaiah 33,22 “Lord is our Judge, Lawgiver and King. He will save us”. Our parliamentary government is identical with Judiciary, Law making and Executive Presidential rule. How much more of an equal home should SL be for tamils and muslims who have lived here for numerous generations. A non radical equal protection of the law is needed for all’

Prophet Habakkuk two and half centuries ago saw Babylon (Iraq) invading God’s people Judah (Israel) and questioned God why he was allowing injustice being conquered by unrighteous proud nation. Judah’s sin was exposed as greed, seeking security through ill-gotten gain, building cities through bloodshed and violence, drunken sexual immorality, and trust in breathless idols and not the living God, before whose magnificent presence and power, they needed to be silent. God later judged Babylon. This makes no sense to some, but Habakkuk got triggered to declare faith and praised God for his power even without figs, vines, olives, food and flocks. God’s power to save eternally was enough for him. Worth reading prophetic books.

A Vote for Gotha was a Racist Vote from Majority Racists and they have dug their own Grave which is obvious from events since the Election.

    1) The Fisr Country to call Gotha was India and thag was to summon him to Delhi for talks and Goha admitted it was all about Security.
    2) Indian Forein MInister arrives with 5 years old left over “Laddu” which gave Gotha Food Poisoning so he is going to Delhi for Treatmen.
    3) The only other Country of any importance who called was Singapore no doubt to find out when Gotha will be going there for Treatment.

Sadly for Gotha No Western Courty has engaged with him . He is going to struggle. and so will his Country.

Your views are too simplistic. The US, Indian defence etsablishments do want to deal with GR, they are figuring out how to sugar coat it.

The writer is one of those ‘millions of ordinary folk who are fatally intoxicated by the superstition, mythology, fantasies and historical distortions’ of the Bible. When they see the terrible injustices of this world they cannot explain them. Even the Archbishop of Canterbury, the head of the Anglican church said he sometimes doubted whether God exists. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-29255318 Buddhism alone can explain the situation humans find themselves in.
That is why while so many poor, hungry, illiterate people become Christians in Asia, educated, wealthy, THINKING people become Buddhists in the West.

Neither religious leaders nor political leaders can Deliver us from Evil. Religion and politics are two sides of the same coin. Religion in the hands of politicians and politics in the hands of religious leaders are the cause of Srilankan/world troubles. The recent bomb blasts have been, it is suspected, sponsored by two different religions- Buddhist political leaders and Islamic fanatics on mostly Christian Tamils, while they were in God’s Little Acre.- the church.
In a way, these blasts are considered responsible for the outcome of the election results-rightly or wrongly.

I think prof. Ekanayake has over reacted and although his article is beautiful to read (proud that there are still Sinhalese who can write so brilliantly) it is definitely not the stand that Christians would or should take. I don’t thinks for one moment that NGR together with the BBS will boil the Christians in hot oil or impale them all on the chudamali pohottuwa shaped pinnacle!
Right thinking people of this country Buddhists and Christians alike wanted a president whose hands were not tainted with murder, fraud , nepotism and what not. Although an incompetent yahapalanaya govt did not or would not prove cases conclusively, we all know that these accusations were true. I belong to the category of persons who are not ‘highly’ educated but have a natural intelligence that can (or want to always) discern the truth. After watching the many interesting TV debates on the independent channels we the people can form our own opinions. However my biggest fear is nepotism. Sri Lanka has been proudly boasting about being ‘first’ in many fields such as first female prime minister etc etc. Now we have a new ‘ First’ Only country in the world to have two brothers both president and prime minister and other brothers also in the cabinet. Nepotism at its best
We also know why Sajith could not get a majority.
One is the easter bombings and the total failure of the UNP govt to deal with it. In this connection Harin fernando should not open his mouth after having admitted that he did not go to church that day after being warned by his father! He has some nerve to even show his face.
Secondly following the easter bombings the NGR campaign had deadly ammunition to build up the fear psychosis in the rural Sinhala Buddhist majority with the ‘rata beraganne’ cry. The maha sangha did a great job at the grass roots level – a Dutugemunu to save the Sinhala race and Buddhism.

Prof Ekanayake: You wrote a very important article. I was reading in between lines. Some where it says The Christianity is the religion of the (American) Imperialism.https://www.counterpunch.org/2019/11/21/christianity-is-the-religion-of-imperialism/
This author identifies different forms Christianity. The version of Christianity you explain is what was preached by St. Paul. This article explains about European way of thinking of comprehending the world. ?It also explains about WORLD RELIGIONS and explains SECULARISM in the NON-SECULAR AGE.
It is sad that you have been converted to a christian now.
I know that THAILAND also has the problems Sri Lanka and Myanmar has.
Anyway, Sajith is/was not matured yet to be a Leader yet. I think his intention is to do the ground to become a leader in the future. He tried to become the leader with the help of Tamil, Muslim and Christian votes. But my guess, if he won, only the NGOs and their masters (mostly) would win and every Sri Lankan would lose Because, people around him are Hyenas and great white Sharks. People saved a bankrupt country being sold to the lowest bidder.

    Dear Professor,
In Sri Lanka, the Police, Military and Judiciary are more powerful than “God”.
See how cases against this president have been postponed many times? Now it is said that all evidence will be erased because he is president, even though he is said to remain a US citizen. This matter is now “buried”.
    Same for his brothers.

Prime minister of Israel – Netanyahu, leader of Jews who forced Pilate to crucify Jesus, has been found guilty of corruption. Is this divine punishment?

We need a secular constitution like in India. There every politician declares his assets before election. Tamil Nadu prime minister was jailed for corruption.

Prof. Ekanayake: Eventhough Christianity began, by Romans, as a political tool, Some JEwish – christian saints (Issaih) preached against engaging in politics. ” The Bible’s Jewish prophets, such as Isaiah who spoke moral political truth in his day with, “Learn to do good, Seek justice, Rebuke the oppressor, Defend the fatherless, Plead for the widow.” (Isaiah 1: 17). Yet Christians have contrary takes on religion and politics. There are Christians who want to “keep religion out of politics,” and punish those in their churches who become too “political.” Conversely, there are other Christians who try to use politics to impose their biblically-based views on everyone else, and want to punish those who don’t conform. Read the following article. https://www.counterpunch.org/2019/11/20/whistleblowing-religion/. My point is christianity doe snot have a specific Doctrine. Even though they have bible, there 43,000 denomination under the bible to preach for the same almighty. The truth. they contradicts each other and humanity so many times. This article is about the Whistle blower’s case with regard to TRUMp’s impeachment case. but, explain the politics in christianity.

So sorry, Professor, at the vitriolic abuse hurled at you merely for the sin of exercising your right to express your views – articulate, peaceful and learned, as they are. But that is what our society has become in the post-1956 era where Sinhala Buddhism is being thrust into the throat of all. All our finer values, for which the country was known, have been destroyed under the majoritarian weight. The Sinhala Christians – a very progressive part of the Sri Lankan whole – have become a sad and somewhat fearful minority.
I do not wish to enter into arguments with the many, supposed to be possessed of some learning, because this is futile. I want to, however, point out to one crucial issue that is not being spoken openly. This feature also played its role against Sajith in the results of the recent Presidential Election. Mahinda R made reference to this
when the campaign of his brother began. He said something like kula bedhaya genath api Kalpana karanda one-ne (suggesting the caste factor also will play a role) Play a role it indeed did!!! The shrewd Rajapakse clan did their homework well. Both in the South and the rest of the country the G factor was insidious – and, across political party lines. The Premadasas always suffered this disability is known to all political analysts. RP made it worse by the violence unleashed during the latter part of his tenure where multiple thousands of Sinhala youth perished. That Ranjan W created much of the damage is hardly noticed. The ageing Hema, by her poor PR, was responsible for the loss of many votes. Younger Sajith appears to be a nice man – better educated (in English as well, if you like) civil and polite but sadly lacked the required leadership qualifications for the top job.
