The (Quick) ‘Ethnicization’ Of The Result

By Malinda Seneviratne

In 2005 when Mahinda Rajapaksa was elected President, it was argued that he won because of the LTTE ordering Tamils living in areas controlled by that organization to boycott the election. Had they voted, Mahinda’s opponent Ranil Wickremesinghe of the UNP would have got that ‘extra something’ needed to win, it is argued.

Decent enough argument, although it is presumptuous to speculate about the ‘may have’ of voter-choice. However, stressing the point somehow devalues the votes that did get cast. It is ridiculous, for example, to place higher value on votes un-cast than one those that were counted.

Today we see a similar under/over valuation of ethnic-composition with respect to the result of the Presidential Election. Not surprisingly these are exercises indulged in by those fixated by identity politics. They assume, erroneously, that people are essentially one dimensional and they make choices based solely on notions of identity, ethnic or religious.

The reason for this is the fact that the Northern and Eastern Provinces went to Maithripala Sirisena, who was supported by the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress and the Tamil National Alliance. The strengths of these parties being in the above mentioned provinces clearly give credence to the claim.

There are separatists, federalists and devolutionists of various hues who have re-hashed the 2005 argument, claiming ‘Tamils (and Muslims) made Maithripala the President’. On the other hand, ardent Mahinda loyalists or rather the diehard Sinhala Buddhists in that camp argue that the result is a victory for Eelamists, federalists and devolutionists based on, ironically, the same (mis) reading of voting patterns.

The truth is that Tamils in the Northern Province did not vote en bloc for Sirisena. He got close to 400,000 from Jaffna and Vanni. Mahinda Rajapaksa polled a little over 100,000 in these electoral districts or approximately 20% of the total votes cast. That 100,000 are not Sinhala Buddhists. It is different in the Eastern Province.

Maithripala BuddhistHow about applying this logic to the districts that Maithripala did not win? When you just color districts on the map without the relevant vote breakdown, you get a very skewed and distorted picture of voting patterns. Mahinda Rajapaksa won Kalutara, Galle, Matara, Hambantota, Moneragala, Ratnapura, Kegalle, Matale, Kurunegala and Anuradhapura, but Maithripala Sirisena secured more than 40% in each of these districts except Hambantota (35.9%) and Moneragala (37.45%). They were not ‘all blue’ so to speak. Similarly, Mahinda was only a close second in Gampaha (49.49%), Badulla (49.15%) and Puttalam (48.97%), while polling over 40% in Colombo, Kandy and Polonnaruwa.   These districts, then, were not ‘all green (with apologies to Ranil Wickremesinghe and the UNP of course)’.

Here’s what really puts the matter to rest. Of those who voted for Maithripala, only 6.2% were from the North and 9.4% from the East, keeping in mind that Sinhalese make up 23% in the latter province. So, the ‘minority’ share of ‘victory’ is just 15.6%. It is ridiculous to think that Maithripala will let this segment wag the 84.4% of the rest, keeping in mind, also, that he is President for all, not just those who voted for him.

Anyway, arguing that the TNA is ‘Eelamist’ (if it is not, the TNA certainly has done little to lay that perception to rest) and therefore the ‘Tamil vote’ is a vote by Eelamists for Eelam with Maithripala in tacit acknowledgment of all this is simplistic. It assumes that people want nothing else represented other than such objectives, that they are not interested in law and order, good governance, dealing with crime and corruption, the cost of living, employment opportunities, better access to healthcare and education etc. It I like saying that since known thugs backed Mahinda Rajapaksa all those who voted for him in electorates where the campaign was organized by these thugs were themselves thugs.

What’s forgotten in all this is that this was the first presidential election where ‘ethnic issues’ took a back seat. Indeed, there was little or no mention of that which had dominated all presidential elections since 1982. No talk of devolution. Nothing of the 13th Amendment. Nothing of ‘minority rights’. The only ‘ethnic’ or ‘religious’ factor was that two parties that prey on identity, the TNA and SLMC chose to support a particular candidate. No agreements. No MoUs. Indeed, one can fault both candidates for leaving this vexed issue out of the story because you can keep it out of manifesto and speech but you can’t make it go away.

The fact remains that the winner clearly stated that there would be no change in the national security status quo and that the unitary character of the state will not be touched, that sovereignty and territorial integrity will similarly be kept intact. So, if we flip the communal argument, one can even say that by backing a candidate, coalition and manifesto that so strongly affirmed these elements that are so clearly identified with Mahinda Rajapaksa’s regime, the TNA was essentially ‘backing off’

While an ethnic-privileging reading of results is certainly useful, it is perhaps more useful to read certain trends about other issues that matter for the people.   It was pointed out by someone that the particular candidate lost the electorates from which those who defected to his side belonged. Dambulla, Mihintale and Seruwila were all won by Mahinda. And Maithripala secured Tissa Attanayake’s electorate. Interestingly, Maithripala lost Attanagalle, the stronghold of Chandrika Kumaratunga, whose role in the entire election has been widely overrated.

Interestingly also, the same commentator pointed out, the poorest electoral division in Sri Lanka, Anamaduwa, voted solidly for Mahinda. Now that’s a line of analysis that the ‘ethnicists’ are avoiding.

Clearly there is a call for a de-ethnicization of politics, which means that the ‘ethnic’ component of national concerns should be realistically proportioned and not allowed to balloon according to the inflationary whims of ‘ethnicists’. Perhaps the current focus on bestowing meaning to citizenship (through institutional reform that yields better governance) will help. All power to the new President in this.

      Dear Mahinda,

You will forgive us for dropping all those lovely titles. We are confident of this simply because in conceding defeat gracefully you recovered for yourself dignity that you let slip away a few years ago. We are confident because in that very moment you became recognizable as the leader, the fellow-citizen and the one-of-us who was loved like few leaders are loved.

You were not a perfect President. You were certainly not the most imperfect President we’ve had either. You stood tall when it mattered. During your tenure you gifted back to the people of this country a land they had lost or rather their leader had squandered due to ignorance, arrogance and the mad pursuit of narrow political objectives. You recovered for us the right to breathe. You banished a culture of fear.

You could have done much more, but this is not the moment to go into all that. You did much. You did enough. Enough to be remembered. Enough to be remembered as a hero, a simple man of simple ways, who did what he could to the best of his ability and knowledge framed of course by his infirmities and human frailties.

Go well, Mahinda. You’ve earned your place in our history. You deserve a time of peace in your beloved Medamulana home.

This [Edited out] does not seem to have worked out that it is the “majority” vote counts in a democratic election.

The UNP lost in the hinterland. But Sira scored 70-80% of the vote in N and E.

Look at the Galle electoral division result – an exception to the southern province result- to see the Muslim influence.

The Muslim vote is a hidden snake in Galle, Matara, Kandy, Colombo north and West.

Sira has got the tiger’s tail on one hand and the burning gree crescent on the other.

Lets see after the 100th day!

If you sing a song to a nation back and forth – the very same nation would not even make any effort to make distincition about the conetents to be right or wrong but adapt to that- they woudl not raise why .. what went wrong – after all when they are kept in all torments of high cost of living – this is what happened to GAMPAHA people not to have voted for MS in Atthanagalla.
On my recent visit to lanka, I happened to discuss this with several coming from various walks of life, but almost over 70% disagreed with MR politics, while others spoke the use of Southern highway calling it a miracle of life time for them.

Apart from that, people knew exactly what was right what was wrong – in many areas of the country- that is why the numbers that MS did not win made no big differences. However, Gamapaha – among them there were supporters of Pranasanna Ranatunga who sang the song again and again in favour of MR. Synergy worked people to go misguided. Prasanna Ranatunga may be a good politician but he did not behave well in TV political discussions. That showed his nature clearly.

    Dear Malinda,

Thank you for reflecting my own thoughts on this Ethnicization claims of the victory. It is an unwise claim and is not conducive of integration. I hope sense will prevail.

MS’s campaign was about democracy, good governance, Law and Order, Cost of living and Media freedom. This was important to all and transcended ethnic boundaries. There was nothing ethnic about it.

As you rightly point out MS stated categorically (in response to the govt propaganda attempt at fanning Racism, expecting it to drown the oppositions focus on corruption) that he, if elected, would not allow the division of the country, would not remove the Armed forces from the North and would not allow Provinces to amalgamate and will keep with himself the Defense portfolio and that his powers would be exercised through the Governors. He also stated that he will not touch anything in the Constitution that requires approval by a referendum. The Tamils and the Muslims were fully aware of that before they cast their vote.

Thus it is not logical to say that the Tamil vote from the North was connected to ethnic issues. It is the same for the Muslims and the Sinhalese who voted for MS.

The Northern and Eastern vote was for a return to democracy, good governance, reduction of cost of living, Law and order and media freedom. The North and East electorates stood to benefit more from that than what they were getting from the MR regime. Abstention or a vote for MR would have resulted in the continuance of his policies in the North and East and a life under strongmen Devananda and Pillayan and Karuna.

What is overlooked is that the message of the MS camp was prevented from reaching the Sinhala hinterland in the deep south. The govt controlled National TV (Rupavahini and ITN) had the penetration that the Private TV did not posses and the racist message from the govt was drummed in Ad nauseam, every few minutes, 24 hours of the day. Today MS’s camp says that out of the Private channels only Sirasa allowed a balanced representation of MR and MS views and ALL other private channels were biased towards the govt. Thus if the real campaign message of the MS camp was able to reach the deep South, where MR had a very strong showing, the result from the South would have been very different.

The following site claims that 25 Ministers and 10 Deputy Ministers have been named. With so much of speculation going on, this may also be speculation. [Edited out]

A lot of thought appears to have gone in, in selcting the persons. According to it Hon. M.A.Sumanthiran’s name appears as the Min of Languages, Social integration Resettlement & Peace. If true, this is a good choice as it sends a message to the Tamils.

    Kind Regards,

OTC, by putting part of the story, arguing that the West, North, East and the Upcountry only understood the campaign or wanted good governance so overwhelmingly voted MY3 and the South and the Central did not understand the campaign or wanted bad governance so overwhelmingly voted to the King.

Further, OTC did not read TNA’s statements, which was timed and released when NDF campaign team was in Jaffna, falsely claimed that army will be removed by MS, MS will settle the Tamils problem. There were many Tamils who can understand all three languages criticized the two separate cheating propaganda staged, one for south and one for north and east by TNA and NDF. TNA was not recruited in to the NDF for apparent reason, even though TNA volunteered to support NDF. In the North, when CBK mentioned the name of Pirapakaran, the crowd cheered and embarrassed CBK. Right after the loss, King spoke to crowed gathered at his house that he was defeated only in the north, east and upcountry. OTC is, as professor Manivannan said, trying to hide the elephant or cannot understand what happened.

        Dear Mallaiyuran,

You say “OTC, by putting part of the story, arguing that the West, North, East and the Upcountry only understood the campaign or wanted good governance so overwhelmingly voted MY3”

Please calm down and re read my comment, you have got your wires crossed as usual.

The TNA read the published manifestos of MS and MR and decided to support MS and advised the Tamils by house to house campaigning to vote for MS.

Are you trying to tell us that the TNA is full of ignoramuses who cannot read and understand a published manifesto? They read it, understood it and advised the Tamils to vote for Maithri because they wanted good governance and not the type of governance dispensed by MR’s Minister Devananda and the EPDP.

It is no secret that there is bad blood between CM Wigs and Minister Devanada as the following videos posted by Tamilnet of a recent DDC meeting underlines.

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gCBWqJ0WOCU
        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNpzECALZBU
        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y84QZcPU3nY

The North and East had no alternative but to defeat Mahinda IF they did not want to spend the next 8 years and 2 months under Devananda, Pillayan and Karuna.

Despite instructions to the contrary by other Tamil quarters to abstain, they went to the polls and voted. They did not want another 8 years 2 months of MR’s type of governance. That tells the story.

The North did not vote exclusively for MS. Some of them voted for MR and wanted Devananda to continue with his subversion of CM Wigs.

You say “…… South and the Central did not understand the campaign or wanted bad governance so overwhelmingly voted to the King”

The message of Good governance of the MS camp did not reach the vote base of the South effectively, compared to the “One country secure Future” racist message of the MR camp. If you live in SL the reason would have been obvious.

If you do not live in SL you should have first verified what I said in my post, viz The govt controlled National TV (Rupavahini and ITN) had the penetration that the Private TV did not posses and the racist message from the govt was drummed in Ad nauseam, every few minutes, 24 hours of the day.

The message must be available for it to be understood isn’t it?

        Kind Regards,
        OTC

Is Malinda commenting from a deep well. This stupid guy predicted that Rajapakse will win. He was hanging on to the Rajapakse pote. Now he is switching on to the topic of “Ethinicization”.

Who is trying to bring an ethnic rift and all the Tamils Ethinicized? Its this stupid Malinda. People like him have to be taken before the justice system for instigating ethnic trouble under the Prevention of Terrorism Act.

Tamils and Muslims are citizens of Sri Lanka. They have the right to vote en-block Maithree, who is Milinda to question it?

If he is a true honest Sri Lankan, he would have seen the following from the results:

    1. The Tamils and Muslims have completely ignored the requests of the Diaspora, who have taken money from Rajapakse and asked Tamils not to vote. The Tamils and Muslims in the North and East have voted for Maithree as requested by TNA. So TNA is the party these people will follow not the Diaspora. Milinda is one of those who has been playing the Diaspora card in the past.

    2. This act of the Tamils and Muslims has also given a slap to the Diaspora and have said “Butt Out Diaspora”, our leaders are TNA and we know what is best for us.

Stupid Malinda has not seen it, who is going to shut this guy. May be we all should get a Bullock Cart and tie Malinda and Dayan Jayatillaka and take them for a spin along Galle Face.

Where are you getting this ‘claim’ that the diaspora told Tamils not to vote? Why would the diaspora make such a demand when the TNA supported Maithiri and Vigneswaran asked people to go out an vote.

For your record, all the Tamils my family know out here in the West support Maithiri and was hoping he won. There was absolutely no wish for Tamils to abstain from voting.

If Tamils voted for Fonseka against Rajapaksa, do you really think diaspora is going to give Mahinda a win by not voting for Maithiri.

        Dear Palmsquirrell,

“Where are you getting this ‘claim’ that the diaspora told Tamils not to vote?”

Mr S. V. Kirubaharan says “Some among the diaspora demand a boycott of the elections; others say not to vote in the election and yet another funny group says ‘not to boycott the Presidential election like what happened in 2005’!”

        Is he lying?
Who is this “Funny Group” that he alludes to? The TNA?

Who is this Mr S. V. Kirubaharan?
He calls himself the General Secretary, Tamil Center For “Human Rights” (TCHR) France.

But a look at his website clearly exposes him as a Tamil Separatist and a Terrorist sympathizer if not a Terrorist Financier.

To him even the well known Ethnic Cleansing (Genocide?) of the Muslims from the North is simply an “evacuation” not even an expulsion.

He wrote an Article on CT titled Here comes the Vultures!

My response to him then is available at this link

The truth is Diaspora messages never reach the Tamils in the East and the North. Diaspora is active only in the net. Net is not accessible in the North and East. Basically all Tamil Media on the net are off limit to Tamils. (Even CT does not reach Sinhala population. Then what is the question about Tamils web meadia reaching Tamils. When Sumanthiran was questioned on his anti-position on the international inquiry by TGTE member in Toronto, Sumanthiran threatened that it was his stand and if he was questioned more on that he get down from the stage and walk away. If they ever Web net get opened to Tamils, unlike now, then TNA will have to answer all their questions.) Ananthi was virtually an unknown woman when she got the second highest in the NPC. She has been dismissed from Federal Party for not accepting TNA’s demand. She was the only one invited to UNHRC presentation. No one is in the TNA. On the other side Kumar Ponnampalam junior too went on behalf the Tamils. They too are with diaspora, opposed TNA’s effort to disturbed the inquiry for its petty benefits.

6th Amendment is the biggest girdle in the North and east for political campaign. TULF, the former version of the TNA has been fiercely fighting against to it until very recently. When Sumanthiran visited to diaspora, he promised when he return to Lanka he will start a campaign against it back again. This time TNA statement was against their promise to the diaspora. TNA will be finding it difficult time when the North-East Tamils find out from new Sinhala government that it did not promise to TNA as the way they said in their statement that the Army will be removed.

Diaspora leaders and the Gajenthiran dismissed to the public media the claim that they were paid by King’s camp. As Ananathi in the TNA the fake reporters like Park did not put a claim like that on her too. , GTF was the only one thought that if MY3 become EP, the investigation will be easier and they supported MY3. But MY3 has promised the opposite. Ranil is the one blocked ICC accord. So GTF was wrong in its position on that.

You are lying or clueless about the North and East.

The Internet is available in the North and East.
Many Tamils post to CT from the North. Dr Rajasigham Narendran regularly post from the North.

Tamilnet and some other sites are blocked but always reachable by using any of the numerous Free Proxies available on the Internet.

I read CT and write to it without any problem, no proxy required. Has been doing it for years. Even this post is made from SL. Just use a public DNS such as Google’s 8.8.8.8 and make sure to remove any SLT (or similar) DNS from your computer (not even as a secondary DNS).

We ALL know that colors, when you magnify them, can have bits of other colors. But the main point is not the voting results, but any promises made by the Liberal Right to any Un-Liberal Minority Factions. But we know that those should be contained by Sirisena alone. Hope the challenges are not too insurmountable.

Tamils and Muslims did not vote for MR because of the breakdown of the Rule of Law-not because of their ethnicity. The Sinhalese vote was split down the middle for the same reason. The only ‘fears’ in a vibrant democracy should be fear of law and of conscience; not fear of the government in power.

  • 0

It is wrong to ‘ethnicise’ the result. It should be noted that that overall, over 81 percent participated in the voting countrywide only 61 percent voted in Jaffna. It is strange that Mahinda did not take into account the large number of Sinhala votes against him in the Colombo district and other urban areas!

Malinda. Long way to go until you can analyse statistics. You have to analyse Maithripala’s lead and determine the contribution of the minority bloc vote to that lead. It’s simplistic to say that “Of those who voted for Maithripala, only 6.2% were from the North and 9.4% from the East,… So, the ‘minority’ share of ‘victory’ is just 15.6%.”

The minority bloc vote is all about identity politics. That’s why it can always be predicted based on which side the TNA and Muslim Congress chooses to hoist their temporary flag. In this election the minority vote was a surge, which drove Maithripala relentlessly forward. You could have spotted this surge if you had been watching the election results as they were issued. Whenever Maithripala’s lead fell back after a spate of results from the ‘majority electorates’, a result from a minority electorate would come in and heal the ‘regressing lead’.

Malinda basically you are an analyst who depends more on word spinning ability than true researching and analytical prowess. However even an analyst like you can achieve insight if you have a good enough moral compass. Because a moral compass can give one an instinct that can compensate for a short-staffed research and analytical department. It’s my humble opinion that during the past few years starting from 2011, your moral compass has been deteriorating steadily thus robbing you of insight.

You were an undisclosed part of a collective comprising of Champika Ranawaka, Athuraliye rathana, Karunaratna Paranavitana, et al supporting Maithripala steadily in this election. And yet why were you undisclosed? Why did you wait till the result was out to state openly that Mahinda had forfeited his right to lead the country to other tomorrows? Why do the commentors here express surprise at your apparent volte face? Why is it apparent only now when it obviously happened long before? Why were you a covert agent this time? Are the reasons strategic? When a sense of strategy overrides one’s sense of right, one’s moral compass gets shaken and unless one’s intellect is robust enough, it can cloud one’s insight.

MOUs and demands are not necessary. What’s important is the weight of aspirations. It’s easy to analyse the aspirations that powered this victory. Just look at the writers in CT who are overjoyed. You think your clique of Champika’s Ratana’s Karunaratna Paranavitana, et al can act as a check? Once at a pre-election TV interview when the interviewer asked Dayan Jayatilaka whether Champika ranawaka’ faction would act as a check, he laughed aloud.

It would be fascinating to compare the component parts of the mental orientations of you and Dayan The percentages of intellect, self interest, ideological orientation, writing talent, personal affiliation, analytical ability and grasp of available data. In Dayan’s makeup I think insight does not depend on moral compass but on intellect and analytics. That’s why sometimes he gets things right in interesting ways despite having a significant component of self interest.

Analysts seem to forget the factors of `Hora Chande’ and and marshaling of forces that would have been done by those in power. It would be only naive to think that the governing body which used all its powers and misused and abused them in an effort to win the election would not have engaged in other acts of skullduggery to keep Mahinda in power. Perhaps Malinda can analyse how and where Mahinda’s army of diplomats and political appointees to high posts were deployed to carry out such work and how they engaged in it.

Perhaps that may provide the answer to the vexing result in Anamaduwa.
Let none shoot the messenger. He is doing his job to the best of his ability with the facilities available to him.

Let all right thinking Lankans be happy that in spite of all these and other obstacles the people’s vote turned the tables on a wanna be dictator.
But let us also not forget that if not for his leadership LTTE bombs may still be exploding over our beloved land or it may already have been a divided land.
And let us not forget the two southern insurgencies and the birth of the sayings of ‘Colombota Kiri apata Kekiri” from the far south.

As a soldier who has trudged to the far corners of the land through the years, I have seen friends and ‘enemies’and innocents, all sons and daughters of mothers of my land killed for the wrong decisions taken by the so called leaders.
I am sick of being belittled for victories as well as being undeservedly tarred with the same brush meant for miscreants who brought disgrace to a uniform I am proud to wear.

    I am weary and tired.

    6,217,162 – 1,250,716 (minority votes) = 4,966,446 You racist IDIOT!

    Mahinda got 5,768,090 (Total votes)

    5,768,090 – 4,966,446 (sinhala votes) = 801,644 (majority for Mahinda)

Accept that the minorities carried the day.

SINHALA DEMOCRATS CANNOT DEFEND DEMOCRACY WITHOUT MINORITY SUPPORT.

I like this thesis that Malinda writes on his well-deserved lap-top just for this piece. I hope he is right.

Come on Malinda, your favourites lost, so draw a line and move on. You are creating differences where none exist. There must have been many Sinhala Buddhists who voted for the change and I think what was the last straw for them was these people’s arrogant sponsorship of the evil Bodu Bala Sena that simply thrive on conflict and the Rajapakses latched onto them with the belief that community divisions brought them votes. It didn’t.

The euphoria is still on for the ‘victors’. Malinda, your words will come true sooner than later. Hope CT will re-publish this at that time.
