The Tragedy As A Tool: Why The “Main Brain” Remains A Political Weapon

Violence can only be concealed by a lie, and the lie can only be maintained by violence.” — Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

Seven years have passed since the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks, yet for the people of Sri Lanka, the smoke never truly cleared. What should have been a closed chapter of judicial justice has instead become a “perpetual motion machine” for political campaigning. The 269 lives lost and the hundreds maimed are no longer just victims of a terrorist atrocity; they have become the currency of political relevance. As we observe the current landscape under President Anura Kumara Dissanayake (AKD), a troubling pattern emerges: the louder a politician shouts about finding the “Main Brain,” the more they seem to be selling a narrative rather than seeking a truth.

The Promises of the Past – A Carousel of Masterminds

The history of the “Main Brain” investigation is a master class in political shape-shifting. Sajith Premadasa has consistently championed the cause of the Catholic Church, calling for international probes and “absolute transparency.” His rhetoric suggests that the truth is being suppressed by a deep-state conspiracy, positioning himself as the only crusader capable of unmasking the ultimate villain.

However, contrast this with the “research” outcomes of figures like Udaya Gammanpila and Sarath Weerasekara. For years, the official stance from these circles—and indeed the conclusion of many state-led inquiries—was that Zahran Hashim was the mastermind. Gammanpila’s recent “revelations” and his committee reports offer very little that is actually new regarding the “Main Brain.” If Zahran was the mastermind in 2020, and he remains the mastermind in Gammanpila’s 2026 discourse, then the recent political firestorms are not about who did it, but about who can be blamed for letting it happen.

The tragedy is that the “Main Brain” has become a placeholder. Depending on which year it is and who is in the opposition, the “Mastermind” is either a local extremist, a foreign intelligence agency, or a political rival.

The Current Tug-of-War – Professionalism vs. Populism

President AKD’s administration began with a clear mandate: to depoliticize the investigation. By recalling experienced investigators like Shani Abeysekara and Ravi Seneviratne, the government signaled a move toward a forensic, evidence-based approach. These are individuals who were famously sidelined by previous administrations, such as Gotabaya Rajapaksa, because their findings were considered “politically inconvenient.”

Yet, as I undertook, the moment the investigation gained professional momentum, the political “bombshells” began. We see a coordinated effort by the opposition to derail these probes. The forum held on March 31, 2026, was a testament to this “unlikely” unity. Seeing Sajith Premadasa, Maithripala Sirisena, Sarath Weerasekara, and other opposition leaders sharing a platform with Gammanpila highlights a singular goal: Defensive Unity.

This “unholy alliance” of rival politicians is not a coalition of the seeking, but a circle of the self-protected. By standing together on a single stage, they create a collective shield intended to block any investigation that dares to look beyond the gunmen and into the corridors of state negligence. Their unity is a tactical response to a professional probe that threatens to expose how years of political infighting and intelligence manipulation created the vacuum Zahran Hashim exploited. For these leaders, a truly independent conclusion is a zero-sum game: if the professional investigators succeed in uncovering the structural rot of 2019, the political legacies of those in power during that era will be permanently dismantled. Thus, they “sell” the mystery of the “Main Brain” to the public, specifically to prevent the law from identifying the “Main Failures” of the state.

In short, by attacking the credibility of the investigators, they hope to preemptively discredit any findings that might point toward high-level negligence or complicity.

The Ethics of Popularity – Selling the “Secret”

Perhaps the most cynical aspect of this saga is the “I know a secret” politics. Former President Maithripala Sirisena has repeatedly claimed he knows the identity of the “Main Brain” but will only reveal it to a magistrate in a closed-door session. This “teaser” strategy keeps him in the headlines and provides a layer of immunity—it suggests he is a crucial witness who must be handled with care.

Similarly, we see figures like Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thero claiming to possess the ultimate truth, which he will only share with President AKD. Interestingly, Gnanasara was absent from the Gammanpila forum, suggesting that even within the “truth-seeker” camp, there are factions competing for the “exclusive rights” to the narrative.

Why do they do this? Because in the economy of populism, mystery is more valuable than history. As long as the “Main Brain” is a mystery, it can be used to:

Distracted from current economic challenges.

Discredit the current government’s law enforcement efforts.

Mobilize religious and ethnic voter bases by hinting at “external threats” or “internal betrayals.”

The Novelty of the Current Crisis

What makes the 2026 political climate unique is that the “Pasku Brand” is starting to experience diminishing returns, and I am convinced of this.  The public is beginning to notice that the people claiming to seek the truth are (i) the same people who sat on intelligence reports, (ii) ignored warnings, and (iii) presided over failed commissions for half a decade.

When Gammanpila presents “research” that merely rehashes what Sarath Weerasekara said years ago, the novelty is gone. When Sajith Premadasa joins hands with the very people his party once accused of complicity, the “moral high ground” collapses. The 2026 forum was not a search for justice; it was a political trade show where old ideas were repackaged in new grievances.

Conclusion: Justice vs. The Weapon

For the victims of the Easter attacks, finding the “Main Brain” is about closure and the prevention of future horrors. It is a matter of Justice. But for the political class, the “Main Brain” has become a Main Weapon. The true tragedy is that these politicians have a vested interest in not finding the final answer. Once the main brain is revealed, documented, and prosecuted, the “political product” expires. The mystery ends, the headlines stop, and the “Easter Sunday card” can no longer be played during election cycles.

As President AKD’s government moves forward, the public must distinguish between those who want to solve the crime and those who want to keep the crime alive for popularity. If we continue to allow the Pasku attacks to be “sold” on the political stage, we are not just failing the victims of 2019—we are ensuring that the “Main Brains” of tomorrow are protected by the political noise of today. It is time to stop the sale and start the sentencing.

    It’s very obvious to a SL citizen that the Easter Bombings were carried out so the the Sinha le superman can be brought to power in the next Presidential Election (2019)
    Why hasn’t the mystery of allowing an American Citizen to contest in the SL presidential election of 2019 was INQUIRED INTO.
    In 2019 there could not have been any terrorism kind of plot be developed without the KNOWLEDGE of government security forces. Their ACTIVE support and COVER was provided by military Intelligence etc.
    Lots of criminals in SL or abroad have not yet faced JUSTICE yet?

      Why is it such a mystery …… after all these years?

      A day after the attack,

      “This is pure speculation on my part ………. but after observing the aftermath and the behaviour of certain people …….. this is what I believed happened.

      The selection of targets defies logic. ……. “

        Hello Nimal,
        What you said in 2019 still stands. Are we any closer in bringing those that were known to ignore the evidence, to Justice? For me it was another Reichstag Fire and many of the people behind the financing and facilitating of the Easter Bombings are still at large. However former SIS Chief Salley is still in detention and another former Chief, Nilantha Jayawardena, was dismissed from the Police Service in 2025 on a related matter.
        Much shady information has not been fully investigated e.g. –
        “The Petitioner states that according to the investigations it was revealed that the SIM which was used by “Sonic Sonic” has been obtained under the name of a policewoman sergeant attached to Colombo City Traffic Division. The Petitioner states that consequently, the CID interrogated the said woman police sergeant and she revealed that she has given the said SIM card to one Sub Inspector Bandara who is attached to the SIS, whom she claimed to have an affair with”. –

    Did not President AKD pledge something?

      Mr SJ,
      .
      CT is a mirror of Lankan society. Today, those who loudly glorify AKD’s so-called “wonders” conveniently ignore the stark reality of the past 15 months—even with the NPP wielding power both inside and outside Parliament. To many of us who still think critically, JVP-led forces are doing little more than squandering another five years of this country’s youth. Those who stubbornly carry the torch for this politics, without reason or results, will soon be forced to face the music. The signs are no longer subtle—this government is nowhere near what people once hoped for.

    “For the victims of the Easter attacks, finding the “Main Brain” is about closure and the prevention of future horrors.”

    What was the reason for Saharan group to be the mastermind for Easter Bombing. If Saharan is mastermind why should he go against Christians? Who was his enemy? Doesn’t Sri Lanka’s intelligence service knew about this terrorist group. Why President Gotabaya changed Intelligence service people after he became President? Why RW appointed the same intelligence service people back to investigate Easter Bombing?
    Why ShouldPresident Gotabaya run away when all his family (brothers) remain in Sri Lanka under his military protection?
    Who gave the power to do research for Gammanpila?

    The ” Researcher”, ” writer,” and ” Lawyer”- Prbahath Gammanpila has taken a painful and laborious research to let us know the ” Mahamolakaru,” the ‘Architect’ of the Easter Sunday attack on Aparil 31, 2019. At the presentation of his book, he repeated the name of Sharan three times (Mahamolakaru Sharan, Mohamolakara Sharan, Mahamolakaru Sharan) to impress upon the invited audience of his ‘Grand Scale’ finding. You and I saw the ‘Honoured Guests.’ (invited) seated in the front row. Among the others ‘Honoured’ were a group of ‘ Saffron Clothed’.

    I have not read the ‘Book’ and have no intention of reading it.

    Yesterday, another accused, Sivanesan Pillayan (in the “Sunday Attack” case, according to Lawyer Gammanpila) was produced in court after the detention order under the PTA expired. With this arrest, Gammanpila hailed Pillayan as a ‘National Hero” and carried on a campaign against the Government for falsely arresting his client as an accomplice in the Sunday Attack.’ But the truth of the matter was, Pillayan was brought to court on a charge of the ‘Murder’ of the Vice Chancellor of the Eastern University, Prof. Ragunathan. Please watch the details of this case:

    Thank GOD! The voters got rid of that ‘Draconian Vampire’ regime of Rajapakses.
    Is this ‘Book Presentation’ another attempt to bring back these ‘Vampires’? Hope not.

    II . Were it not for the present Government, this case would never have come before the Judiciary. This Pillayan was appointed to the Parliament and made a Vice Chairman of the Rakkapakse political party. Before that, Pillayan ran a “torture house and it was there that the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ragunathan, was murdered.

    It was revealed in the courts that this ‘Pillayan was issued more than 350 weapons and a stock of ammunition to run the ‘Torture Chamber’ and the ‘Killing Field’. All these happened during the Rajapakse Regime, where GR was the Secretary to the Defence.

    I hope you have watched the link. With the details given there (all from case records) I would invite Prbahath Gammanpila to write his next ‘Book’ on this case. Of course, he will not be able to invite most of those seated in that front row for the launch of this book.

    The only problem is that Gammanpila is the ‘Defending Lawyer’ of Pilleyan.

      I think that Pillayan (Chandrakanthan) was elected in 2020 (with the biggest vote in the district?).
      Karuna (Muralitharan) was an appointed MP.

    Readers,
    I believe we should not take anyone’s side in a country where only outright lies have misled the public as of today. As of date, no one in the NPP government has clearly demonstrated their actual character. Nor are they capable of carrying out the promises they made before being elected to parliament. However, former blood suckers, such as the man from Unawatuna, are trying to listen to their own conscience. We are well aware that Sri Lankans, whether educated or not, are highly susceptible to any form of tidal ONE behind the other. They do not see the bigger picture, even if their loved ones were murdered and raped.

    Strongly supported (high confidence)
    1) Local extremist network carried out the attacks

    * Led by Zahran Hashim
    * Group: National Thowheed Jamaath
    * Coordinated suicide bombings across churches and hotels

    This is **proven through investigations, arrests, and evidence**.

    2) Influence or inspiration from ISIS

    * Links (ideological and possibly operational) to Islamic State
    * ISIS claimed responsibility

    Widely accepted, though the **degree of direct control is debated**.

    3) Major intelligence and security failures

    * Government under Maithripala Sirisena failed to act on warnings
    * Breakdown between leadership levels

    This is **one of the most firmly established facts**.
    – Moderately supported (credible but incomplete)
    4) Possible involvement or negligence by intelligence officials

    * Investigations into figures like Suresh Sallay
    * Allegations of prior contact with attackers
    Important:

    * **Still under investigation**
    * Not proven in court yet
    5) Political benefit to Rajapaksa camp
    * Gotabaya Rajapaksa rose to power emphasizing national security
    * Public fear after attacks influenced elections

    cont.

    3

    cont.

    Clearly **true as an outcome**, but:

    * Benefit ≠ involvement
    ❗ Weak or unproven claims (speculative / disputed)
    6) Rajapaksas masterminded or orchestrated the attack

    * Promoted by some politicians and commentators
    * Strongly denied by those accused
    No **legal proof or conclusive evidence** so far.
    7) JVP linked to extremist groups

    * Involves Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna

    No credible investigation has established this
    Likely **political accusation or misinformation**
    8) Foreign governments secretly behind it
    Various theories (India, others)

    No solid evidence
    Considered **low credibility**

    Key reality check

    A common instinct is:

    > “This was too big for locals to plan.”

    But evidence suggests:

    * Small, ideologically driven groups **can execute large attacks**
    * Local actors + global inspiration = **very dangerous combination**

    Simple summary:

    | Claim | Evidence level | Verdict |
    | —————————- | ————– | ——————— |
    | Local extremist group did it | Strong | ✅ Very likely true |
    | ISIS influence | Strong | ✅ Very likely true |
    | Govt intelligence failure | Strong | ✅ Proven |
    | Intelligence complicity | Medium | ⚖️ Unclear |
    | Rajapaksa political gain | Strong | ✅ True (but indirect) |
    | Rajapaksas masterminded | Weak | ❗ Unproven |
    | JVP involved | Weak | ❗ Very unlikely |
    | Foreign conspiracy | Weak | ❗ Speculative |
    Bottom line

    If you strip away politics and speculation:
    The most evidence-backed explanation is **a locally organized extremist attack, influenced by global jihadist ideology, enabled by serious state failure—while deeper conspiracy claims remain unproven**.

    Whatever claims and counterclaims continue to circulate, there is still no proven evidence that the Rajapaksa family was directly involved in the Easter Sunday attacks. What is firmly established is that international terrorist networks were responsible for carrying out the violence.

    The Easter Sunday attacks in Sri Lanka in 2019 can be understood, in part, through the lens of a fragile national security environment at the time. The government then in power, under President Maithripala Sirisena, was widely criticized for internal divisions and failures in coordinating intelligence, despite prior warnings of potential attacks. This situation may have created an opportunity that international terrorist networks were able to exploit. Rather than being the result of a domestic political conspiracy, it is plausible that Sri Lanka was seen as a vulnerable target—both symbolically and strategically—allowing extremist groups to carry out devastating attacks and project their message globally.

    At the same time, the political aftermath of the attacks significantly reshaped the country’s leadership. The climate of fear and public demand for stronger national security created conditions that favored leaders with a reputation for decisiveness in defense matters. In this context, the Rajapaksa camp effectively capitalized on the moment, emphasizing the need for stability and security.
    Their messaging—that the country required leadership capable of restoring safety—resonated strongly with voters, ultimately contributing to Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s electoral victory later that year.

    At most a comment should be 3 or 4 lines, or a single paragraph. I am sure nobody reads these long-drawn out comments of bad grammar and spelling that go on and on, chapter after stupid chapter that fails to focus on the subject. They show up the writer’s lack of education, logic and reasoning. Maybe CT could benefit if it were to run a class in comments’ writing. Or for that matter, in writing in general. It will save space and stop clogging the internet.
