The Tragicomic ‘Sinha-Le’ Tribe

By Sharmini Serasinghe

Sharmini Serasinghe

It is indeed ironic and tragically hilarious, that while Sri Lanka boasts of a 2500 year-old culture, and one of the highest literacy rates in Asia (the ability to read and write), those claiming relationship to a four-legged beast (lion) today; its ‘Sinha-Le’ tribe, is unable to separate allegory and myth, from fact. After all, the ability to read and write doesn’t guarantee intelligence, common sense or wisdom, does it?

What is most hilarious is that, by claiming bloodline to a beast, they are also admitting to being subhuman, the qualities of which, they have no qualms about displaying unashamedly, in the public arena. Is this what our 2500 year-old culture has produced?

This unique beast-blooded tribe, which also appears to have inherited its level of intelligence, also seems unable to distinguish between the Dhamma, and the Mahavamsa. Yet, they insist on calling themselves ‘Buddhists’, and the ‘guardians’ of Buddhism.

The lion that gave rise to this progeny must surely, hang its head in shame, while those of us Sinhalese, fortunate to have human blood running though our veins, can only shake our heads in despair!

buddhist_monks_protestTypically, as is the norm with this part-beast tribe; gullibility is also in their genes. Hence, it is no surprise at all they have yet again fallen, hook, line and sinker, for a desperate and devious effort, by those who bit the dust in January 2015.

Sinha Le is their latest tragicomedy. And, with no surprises once again, it is the lion blooded saffron-robed, who are its main actors, performing at their best.

When oh when, will these fallen despots cease using the saffron-robed, as a means to their dubious ends?

While all human-blooded Buddhists agree, that the Dhamma needs no protection from any force or anyone, the image of Buddhism in Lanka; marketed as a Buddhist nation, has suffered immensely, not at the hands of others, but the paws of the subhuman Sinha Le-Buddhist tribe; a tribe unto themselves!

Attempts by the incumbent regime, to rein in the rampaging lion-blooded saffron-robed, through the Theravadi Bhikku Kathikawath Bill, has already come up against its first obstacle; a petition to the Supreme Court, challenging the constitutionality of the Bill.

The ousted despots now worming around, with neither credibility nor status worthy of mention, will manipulate their robed puppets, and go to the ends of the earth, to stop this Bill ever seeing the light of day. Or else, their ‘weapon of mass destruction’; the saffron robe, will cease to be, the power it now wields.

For the sake of peace and stability of this ravaged country, I hope they fail in their evil endeavour!

What we are now seeing today, is recent history repeating itself, when a similar attempt was made in 2012, to contain the systemic decay that has been eroding the character of the Sangha, for decades. As was the norm in the days gone by, the then government’s favourite whipping boy; “international conspiracy” was blamed for this move, and shouted down.

In late May 2012, MP Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe tabled a Private Member’s Bill in Parliament, seeking an amendment to Sri Lanka’s Constitution, to prevent a priest of any religion, becoming a member of Sri Lanka’s legislature.

Reportedly, the MP’s intention, in doing so, had been to maintain and preserve the integrity and dignity of all religions. It is obvious, that the MP had the Buddhist clergy in mind, as no priest of any other religion, is a Member of Parliament.

As was to be expected, the most strident opposition to the proposed Bill was, from the Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU), of the time. The Bill was doomed, when President Mahinda Rajapaksa reportedly, informed the parties of his ruling coalition, to vote against the proposed bill. This was despite, the entire process by which the Bill was arrived at, having received the blessings of the Chief Prelates of all the four main Nikāyas in Sri Lanka.

Regards the latest Theravadi Bhikku Kathikawath Bill, amongst the many grievances put forward by the ‘Sinha-Le’ monks opposed to the Bill, is that their wings will be clipped if passed; thus, preventing them from meddling in issues of national interest and occult practices.

Regarding national interest, why do we need Buddhist monks also stirring the pot of national interest, when we have an abundance of the laity in parliament, to do the needful?

For centuries past, the Sangha merely played the role of advisors to the rulers of the country, as opposed to actively engaging in politics. They didn’t meddle in matters of governance, and become a nuisance to the public, as we see today. Hence their active interference in national interest thus far, has only been to the nation’s detriment; making the process of peace and reconciliation, a near impossibility, in this land!

National interest is the business of the laity, not of the Buddhist monks, who are supposed to have renounced all; broken the fetters that tie them to lay life, in order to follow the path of the Dhamma. However if they insist, they must disrobe and do so. But, they will not, for without the saffron robe, they wield no power. Hence the need to, eat the cake and have it.

On engaging in occult practices, where in the Vinaya Pitaka or anywhere in the Tripitaka is it mentioned, that a Buddhist monk is permitted to do so? In a pathetic attempt to justify their meddling in witchcraft, they have, reportedly, lumped it together with Bodhi Pooja, defining the harmless latter, also as an occult practice.

Since time immemorial, Buddhist monks, contrary to the very teachings of the Buddha, have been involved in witchcraft and casting of horoscopes; the latter borrowed, from Hinduism, as is the case, with all the practices denounced by the Buddha, found in Buddhist culture.

Hindu cultural practices, including idol and symbol worship which the Buddha denounced and did away with in Buddhism, were introduced to the Buddhist laity as ‘Buddhism’, by none other than Buddhist monks themselves. This they did, for their own advantage, and the sole purpose of ingratiating themselves into lay society. As a result of this confusion, most Buddhists today, cannot distinguish between the Dhamma and Buddhist culture, as they regard both, as one and the same.

Instead of interfering in matters of national interest, the Sangha needs to return to their true calling, and practice as well as propagate the message of the learned one; the Buddha. The moral depths the Sinha-Le tribe has sunk to, is an indictment of how the messengers of the Buddha’s teachings (Bhikkus), have failed in their mission thus far.

Sri Lanka’s post-independence political history is replete, with how the interference of Buddhist monks in issues of national interest; peace and reconciliation, have been, to the detriment of this land. Is this to be a tradition continued, in matters of national interest?

How much longer are we to allow it?

The question should be for how much longer are you the Sinhala Buddhist going to tolerate this.
The people who are allowing it are up in the political tree, present govt included.
Unfortunately the country is corrupt to the core…..it’s not politics it’s power and money
Despite the change of govt and good governance and pro western govt….when the root is corrupt , the beautiful green tree will wither and die

The well respected Pali scholar (a Sinhalese), late Dr. E.W. Adikaram once said in an interview after the 1983 black July, the only way to have peace in Sri Lanka is by burning all the copies of the Mahavamsa.

Mahavamsa is the curse not only to the country (Sri Lanka) but also to the people of Sri Lanka including the Sinhalese.

From a very young age, every innocent Sinhala Buddhist child in Sri Lanka is brainwashed by engraving the Mahavamsa Mindset and Sinhala Buddhist racism into their sub-conscious minds. They are taught to believe the myth that Sri Lanka is a Sinhala-Buddhist country and the non-Sinhala Buddhists (Tamils) are invaders who do not belong to Sri Lanka. All the Tamils should be chased away to Tamil Nadu just the way their ancient National hero King Dutugemunu did. The country (Sri Lanka), Sinhala race and Buddhism should be protected from the Tamils. Now, from recently, they have also included the Muslims and Christians in those needing to be thrown out. Due to the above conditioning, the Sinhala-Buddhist majority believes that the entire Sri Lanka belongs to them and the minorities are aliens.

It is called the Mahavamsa mindset of the Sinhalese which is the most serious problem in Sri Lanka. The Buddhist monk Mahanama in the 4th Century AD wrote what he thought occurred in the 5th Century BC. His Mahavamsa Myth created an imaginary link between Country-Race-Religion and made it into one unit, whereby Sri Lanka (Dhamma Deepa) and Buddhism (Buddha Sasana) will be protected by Buddha’s chosen people (Sinhalese) and therefore Sri Lanka is Sinhala-Buddhist. The Mahavamsa author Ven. Mahanama and the Mahavihara monks may have had a genuine reason for the mythology (to protect Buddhism) but today it very badly abused not only by the Sinhala-Buddhist politicians but also the Sinhala-Buddhist clergy and the gullible laypeople and the country are the poor victims.

UNFORTUNATELY, THIS IS THE CURSE THAT POOR SRI LANKA IS PAYING FOR THE LAST SEVERAL DECADES….

If the Sinhalese do not abandon this Mahavamsa mindset – that Sri Lanka is a Sinhala-Buddhist country and all others are outsiders (only allowed to live) who do not have any legitimate claim or rights to Sri Lanka. Due to this mindset, only the country will continue to suffer and Sri Lanka will remain a Pariah state in the books of the International community. At independence in 1948 Sri Lanka was the second best economy in Asia, today we are one of the worst. All because of the foolishness of the Sinhalese in trying to suppress the minorities. When there is no peace for the minorities, there won’t be any peace for the majority either. The Sinhalese must understand this basic law.

Yes. The well-informed and the wise recognize that. The others do not recognize as such. So, consistent and continuous education is needed.

The example Amarasiri would like to cite is the Geocentric Vs. Heliocentric Model controversy. From the time of Aristotle and Ptolemy to Copernicus publication in 1543, both the ancients and the Catholic Church (Joshua) promoted the Sun going around the Earth, until it was fully overthrown during the age of reason and Enlightenment.

However, even today, 25% of the american , 34% of the Europeans and probably 50% of the Sri Lankans and Sri Lankan Buddhists believe that the Sun goes around the Earth. The “News” hasn’t reached them yet.

So, in the Land of Native Veddah Aethho, still too many Sinhala “Buddhists” believe the Mahawansa Lies and Imaginations, and shackles the sinhala “Buddhist” psyche. They probably revere the Mahawansa much more the Tripitalka, as both are written in Pali, and chanted.

The low Average IQ of the sri lankans, 79, also does not help much, but it will take time.

So, this has to be continuous struggle and education.

Another timely and well-reasoned post, Sharmini.

The Sangha must be in a deep state of somnambulist inactivity to let the thugs rule the roost in this fashion and bring Buddhism in Sri Lanka to this level of degradation.

Don’t know about the ‘comedy’ part of it, but it surely is a ‘tragedy’ of massive proportions.

Best would be for “true Buddhists” to ignore the priests, temples and other unnecessary rituals that have nothing to do with the Gautama’s teachings and philosophy and stick to the Four Noble Truths and Eightfold Path.

“weapon of mass destruction’; the saffron robe” Though sound like a tragicomic, a commonsensical statement.

A quick browse in the google suggest felines have lesser categories of blood than human being, i.e only “A”,”B”, an “AB”. Apparently there nothing special can be in the Wildlife Sanctuary Lankawe, though Human can have some specialty with their odd and difficult type the “O”. So the minorities in Lankawe can be special, not the majority SinhaLE.

Blood makes a person different or unique is as mythical as the Mahavamsa. Now we understand the science better. It is the DNA makes a person or race or Human or spice… The complex and long human DNA cannot split in bi-sex reproduction technique and re attached with shorter and lesser complex animals DNA. Time for the Wildlife Sanctuary Sinhala Intellectuals to call UNESCO and ask help to rewrite their textbooks. After that they can claim they are one of the educated society in Asia. Until that Lankawe is is only a wildlife sanctuary.

Sharmini, thank you, you hit the nail in the head. “After all, the ability to read and write doesn’t guarantee intelligence, common sense or wisdom, does it?”

    2. “What is most hilarious is that, by claiming bloodline to a beast, they are also admitting to being subhuman, the qualities of which,..”

    Subhuman with low IQ?

Lions have 38 chromosomes, humans have 46 Chromosomes. So the Sinhala “Buddhist” who is supposed to be the offspring of a lion and a human, ought to have (46/2)+ ((38/2) = 23+ 19 = 42 Chromosomes. certainly subhuman with a lower intelligence.

May be that is the new Sinhala “Buddhist” species, literate but stupid.

    3. There seems to be some literature support for his position, at least when compared to the other nations.

“This unique beast-blooded tribe, which also appears to have inherited its level of intelligence, also seems unable to distinguish between the Dhamma, and the Mahavamsa. Yet, they insist on calling themselves ‘Buddhists’, and the ‘guardians’ of Buddhism.”

National IQ Scores – Country Rankings

The intelligence scores came from work carried out earlier this decade by Richard Lynn, a British psychologist, and Tatu Vanhanen, a Finnish political scientist, who analysed IQ studies from 113 countries, and from subsequent work by Jelte Wicherts, a Dutch psychologist.

    Rank
    ——– Country
    ———————– %
    ————-
    1 Singapore 108
    2 South Korea 106
    3 Japan 105

    28 Sri Lanka 79
    28 Zambia 79
29 Congo, Democratic Republic of the 78

    4. “Since time immemorial, Buddhist monks, contrary to the very teachings of the Buddha, have been involved in witchcraft and casting of horoscopes; the latter borrowed, from Hinduism, as is the case, with all the practices denounced by the Buddha, found in Buddhist culture.”

So, they don’t practice Buddhism. They practice Sinhala “Buddhism”.

Singale sympathizers and followers deserve to live in the jungles. It is a basic knowledge that these saffron robed rebels were created by the mentally retarded criminals to protect themselves by Bombay looking Calcutta hitting tactics to fool the masses claiming that they are fighting to protect the forces. Very insightful article that provides great food for thought. It is imperative for the government to move in decisively before it is too late. In this whole issue there have been a great number of reasonable Sinhala Buddhist folk who have spoken out. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe’s speech in Parliament was very categorical and forceful and provides a degree of confidence that these miscreants will be dealt according to the law. The President on other hand has been ominously and strangely silent. One wonders why.

Now we must wait and see if the shameless mad monk Ghandassara will be sent back from the Prison Hospital to his place of incarceration or walk free straight from his hospital bed on 9 February. This will indeed be an acid test and will in one way or another set the tone of things to come. The last time Buddhists monks dabbled in high stakes politics (1956 – 1959) a Prime Minister was shot dead in cold blood.Mahinda Rajapakse and his devious brother Gotabhaya have unleashed them once more and only the heavens would know the ultimate consequences of this treacherous ploy.

A great many of today’s Buddhist monks are utterly convinced that when they are worshipped it is not the robes BUT the wearer who is been acknowledged and respected. The robe has thus become a tool or license to impunity. Just have a look at the Homagama Courts demonstration if proof is required. Shame on the so called Mahanayakes who are more interested in their life in Clover than coming out on the side of justice and fair play. Ultimately these ageing dinosaurs would also be subsumed.

Meanwhile, Sharmini well done. We have cause to be proud Sinhala Buddhists because of the writings of reasonable people like you. May your tribe increase.

    Sharmini,
It appears to me that the Lion blood is the reason some Sinhalese behave like animals. For the country to progress we need to first separate religion from governance. We need to ban all clergy participating in politics. Their duty should be to enhance spirituality of the masses. Demanding the gov. to protect one particular religion is discriminatory and create animosity leading to conflicts. We had enough of that so far which took us 50 years backwards.

Thanks for educating us on the pros and cons of what is happening to Buddhism in this country, specially through the misconduct of some of its pall bearers. It looks like Buddhism has been hijacked and is now being taken for a ride, or it is imploding from within. These monks are only fueling the crisis and inadvertently helping to destroy it, whilst the chief incumbents, they all seem oblivious to the impending crisis. It sounds like they are all tongue-tied to say the least and cannot (or is it ‘will not’) excommunicate those rogue elements from their fold, and collectively pass a resolution to condemn what is going on, whilst distancing themselves and the pristine Buddhist philosophy from those usurpers. Why can’t they just do that?

Sinhala-Buddhist is a NAME of an Ethnic Group in Sri Lanka.
    Just like Tamil-Hindu.

It does not mean that lay and shramana/monks are following exactly the Dhamma.

At least in the Buddhist Dhamma case you can say you not following or you are following ….

Look at the other world view groups: Christians, Hindus, Muslims…Do these groups have an identifiable Dhamma/Doctrine….How many splinter groups are there ????

So again Sinhala-Buddhist is an ethnic group identity:

    This means that:
Mother’s Mother = belong to this group
Mother’s Father = belong to this group
Father’s Mother = belong to this group
Father’s Father = Belong to this group

Mother = belong to this group
Father = belong to this group

If you marry your partner satisfy the above requirement for your children to belong to this group.

This is IT…..No need to analyse are you a Buddhist ..a true buddhist etc…because NO body can JUDGE YOU ….SO NO POINT talking about it…..Caste is a sub-Ethnic category which has become and becoming irrelevant as education and money/financial system remove create various job opportunities for all…….

We don’t have politicians with guts and those who do are shot down in mid-flight so the others are like cats on a hot tin roof! That sums up our parliament.
You’re right, one can be literate and still be completely dumb. That describes the vote bank.
Roar on Lion-lady you sure pack quite a punch.

Sharminie your enmity towards the previous government is clouding your thought process. Although it is easy to credit every single Sinhala extremist act to MR and Gota and villify them, the acts of your own Yayapalana actors are making people to move towards MR and Gota. Instead of living in Cuckoo Land if you feel the pulse of the common man you will realize things like making Sambanthan the opposition leader, prosecuting Soldiers while pardoning suicide bombers has left a bad taste in the mouth of common folk. Even Gnanasara who is reviled by the majority strikes a different chord with the masses when he fights to defend war heroes. Unless you get down from your high horse and understand the peoples sentiments with hog wash articles like this you will keep your patrons happy. Once they loose their shirts in the next election people like you are the primary reason by giving them false pretense.

The champion patriot of the Sinhala bigots,

“Instead of living in Cuckoo Land if you feel the pulse of the common man you will realize things like making Sambanthan the opposition leader, prosecuting Soldiers while pardoning suicide bombers has left a bad taste in the mouth of common folk.”

Common folks do understand as to what is afoot in Sri Lanka! Only the racists like yourself have issues with it! Shamini’s head is crystal clear while your head is full of mud!

    Well Said Ms. Sharmini,

Another thought provoking and scholarly article written by a cultured person. Absolutely Brilliant!

Sharmini seems to be the only erudite writer who is openly challenging the myths, fallacies, fictions, concoctions and lies that the Sinhala-Buddhist society believes as gospel. If anybody tries to undo this twist he/she will be considered an unpatriotic traitor or even a terrorist supporter. Some low-life scavengers who were brought up in an uncivilized manner even personally attack such messengers with gutter language as we saw here on CT a few days ago.

The Buddhist monks and their followers are eye-witness evidence to prove that Two thousand five hundred (2500) years of Buddhist Culture and very high rate of literacy (above 90%) has neither made the Sinhala-Buddhist society intelligent nor civilized? The Portuguese identified this in no time.

The Sinhala-Buddhist society is unable to distinguish myth from facts. Many Sinhala-Buddhists are either not willing or not capable of distinguishing myths from facts. They cannot understand the difference between the Buddhist scriptures (Tripitaka) and the mythical Buddhist history (Mahavamsa).

Thanks Sharmini for another intellectual article, please keep writing.

Do you dare? Do they dare?? Let them do it and test themselves out, rather than terrorising around. They can take Jim Softy, Mahindapala, Kasmalam, and the likes as well. [Edited out]

Elara tried to silence the Sinha-le and got done near Sri Maha Bodhi..

Then came Ms Usha’s Diaspora Tiger King Pirahaparan.

He also got done by the Sinha- le near Nanthikadale..

That is nearly 2000 years apart.

Not bad for a clone between a lion and man .

May be that is the secret.

Pity Usha didn’t advice Pira to take up animal husbandry and cloning, instead of trying to build Submarines in Wilpattu..

My sincere apologies to Senator Ms Usha Skandarajah.

I only read the text and didn’t look at the picture..

    I am sorry,

Ms Usha always writes interesting articles which give us another perspective of the Diaspora thinking other than the one which Suren Surendran and the UNP London has imposed on the inhabitants.

What type of Buddhism are these Bhikkus following? Why not supply them with brides also. The present day Bhikkus have all the modern facilities other than wives, very soon that also will be provided.

There is no Buddhism in Sri Lanka, what we find is a religion based on Racist politics, most of these Bhikkus are thugs, they do all the worst things, and preach some rubbish to the gullible Sinhalese who blindly believe that it’s the Dhamma of Lord Buddha.

These Bhikkus are a disgrace to true Buddhism, and they were the cause for the down fall of morality in our country.

For our country to develop and prosper all these Bhikkus should be put in Jail.
Let the people learn the true Buddhism preached by the enlighten one from some other peaceful country like Vietnam or Thailand.

These bad mouthed racist Bhikkus (like Ganasara) keeps on telling the Sinhalese to respect the saffron robe. Even if you rap a broomstick with a saffron robe, the foolish Sinhalese will fall down on their feet or bend into two and worship it. The majority of Sinhala-Buddhists are so foolish and gullible.

      Native Lankan

You are not a member of the Veddah people, are you? If you are not please don’t misuse the word Native.

“What type of Buddhism are these Bhikkus following?”

      Sinhala/Buddhism.

These are not Bhikkus. They are saffron clad thugs and hate preachers, vanguards of Sinhala/Buddhists.

These hate preachers have nothing to do with Sinhalese nor Buddhists.

Do you really think these Bikkhus in SL who have all the modern facilities should be supplied with wives?
How do you know how many of them who already have mistresses are not fulfilled and happy?
