The Unholy Elevation Of Galagodaatte Gnanasara

By Shyamon Jayasinghe

Shyamon Jayasinghe

Form of Address

Pardon me, reader I will not address this man as I do when addressing our normal temple monks who are on the path or trying to be on the path. The problem with Buddhists is that they are conditioned to bend and pay respects indiscriminately to any two-egged being in yellow robes. This had not been an obligation decreed by the Buddha himself who had several times disparaged those who are unworthy but in robes. The failure of folk level Buddhism in this regard is the root societal cause of the decaying Sanga we observe today. There has to come a time when the public must look away at persons like Galagodaatte Gnanasara. It is only critical social reaction that can keep monks on course.

Past Record

It is gone on record that this muscular man was long ago caught for drink-driving. He was recently jailed and rescued from jail by a presidential pardon by the other notorious character called Sirisena. Birds of a feather flock together is the much used adage to describe this situation.

It is also on record that this man filthily abused the wife of Prageeth Ekneligoda, the missing person when the former appeared in court for the hearing related to her husband. I do not know whether Gnanasara raised his robe that time but it is reported that he appeared outrageously abusive in the presence of court. He has been caught similarly abusive of police officials who had intervened to implement the law. One case, I remember had been in Kurunegala. Some of the words he was caught on video uttering cannot be reported in print here. It is clear that Gnanasara has no laws or norms guiding him. Lawless man he is.

The New Appointment

Now, president Gotabaya Rajapaksa has awarded the monk with some serious responsibility and that is to ensure there is one law in one country. Gnanasara has no law at all and so it behoves us to figure out what law he is going to decree. Besides, legislative change is a specialised task that no ordinary man can be entrusted to undertake. Another point is that this task falls within the legal jurisdiction of the Minister of Justice. As for many of Gota’s actions thus far, the question is repeatedly being asked “who is responsible to whom?” This is a basic managerial issue but we have seen time and again our president giving the same responsibility to several people. When he realizes, like the tubelight, the gazette is reversed. All is nice and tidy!

What Has Gotten of Gota?

Gota’s link with Gnanasara isn’t one of yesterday. Media reported how when he was Defense Secretary Gota had been seen at the opening AGM of Gnanasara’s Bodu Bala Sena Sangamaya.

What has gotten of Gota, can anybody tell? One thing is that he is taking an inordinate time to go up the learning curve with regard to managerial tasks and decisions. At conferences he looks around for decisions and even then takes the wrong decisions. His fertilzer decision is a dramatic and tragic example that will eventually return to him and his government in a very serious backlash. Looking at the utter chaos and utter desperateness and dismay of farmers all over the island our Gota just smiles and mumbles without conviction “Api thamayi honda ta ma kele.”

Yes, Gota, your new “honda ta ma kele” act is to give the thug monk a big official responsibility.

Street Fighter Battalion?

I am wrong. You will see the monk rounding up other robed ones with ‘goti’ beards to assault striking teachers, for instance. Let them come again! In the meantime this monk brigade will put other critics under control and may even obstruct other democratic expressions of protest. In this way Gnanasara will be valuable indeed. If this be so, there is a political wisdom in giving this monk an official role and arming him with government approval.

Galagaodaatthe Gnanasara is going to play a big role this way. And when election time comes this thug will be very handy.

This new situation frightfully reminds us of Hitler’s paramilitary troops known as the SA. Here’s a description:

“The Sturmabteilung (German: [ˈʃtʊʁmʔapˌtaɪlʊŋ] (listen); SA; literally “Storm Detachment“) was the Nazi Party‘s original paramilitary wing. It played a significant role in Adolf Hitler’s rise to power in the 1920s and 1930s. Its primary purposes were providing protection for Nazi rallies and assemblies, disrupting the meetings of opposing parties, fighting against the paramilitary units of the opposing parties, especially the Roter Frontkämpferbund of the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) and the Reichsbanner Schwarz-Rot-Gold of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), and intimidating Romani, trade unionists, and especially Jews.

The SA were colloquially called Brownshirts (Braunhemden) because of the colour of their uniform’s shirts, similar to Benito Mussolini‘s blackshirts.”

Seen this way ( I am hoping this isn’t true), Gnanasara is readying to play a big role in the political scenario.

Our president Gotabaya should think very carefully and not fall into the trap of Gnanasara who may even eventually take over from the president when the chaos strikes and Gota is disabled by the mess and wants to return to America- his safe land.

Looking at the last two years, this seems to be a strange twist in the affairs of our governance. The macro problems of impossibly growing debts and dwindling forex, the failure of import substitution, the failure of price control, the burgeoning cost of living daily heaped on the people-these are obviously telling on the government and Gota and his government knows they cannot solve them. In the meantime, public reaction is hitting the streets.

To add to this Gnanasara might rekindle anti-Muslim riots. Like the Jews of Hitler, the Mussulmen of Lanka would be the scapegoats.

I like to recall the Dammapada: “As a creeper overpowers the entwined Sal tree, he whose impiety is great reduces himself to the state to which his enemy wishes for him.” (Attavaggo)

Appointing “Thug of a Monk Gnanasara” should be an eye-opener to all Buddhists in the country. Its time the Buddhist community rises up against this stupidest move of the President to date. Is President Sane?

You have a good point. The majority of Buddhists are appalled by this thug’s behavior, and they should rise as one voice and condemn this man who brings shame to Buddhism, and the country.
The president is not sane, he is crooked and cunning. He is using this thug as a diversion to take the attention of the people away from the blunders he keeps making.

Who this Cardinal, taking politics in one hand criticizing the Government. Is this same cardinal cried for Buddhists who killed by LTTE in front of the Srima Bo Tree in Anuradhapura? and 15 Buddhist priests massacred by LTTE. This cardinal is double-minded, telling Sri Lanka is a Buddhist country and blaming to present government without any clues.

It reminds me of a historical incident where the country’s PM was assassinated by a yellow-

US citizen Rajapakse brothers are following CIA orders appointing BBS Gnanasara who visited the US and Norway and is part of the US owned ISIS project to weaponize religions and provoke a :”Clash of Civilizations” between Buddhism and Islam in Asia, to Divide, Rule and colonize and loot Asia and make America the failed empire ‘great again!
Please read the Book by Yale Historian “Cold War Monks: Buddhism and America’s Secret Strategy in Southeast Asia” published by Yale University Press.
US has been using Muslims and the Saudi Wahabi and ISIS project with Israels’ Mossad to de-stabiize the whole Indian Ocean region since the Cold War. US Covid-19 Pfizer vaccine business and mask and looting of Sri Lanka;s Lakdhanavi Kerawelapitiya power plant is being exposed so now they are distracting with the weaponization of religion and the Los Angelese Rajapakse Sinhala Buddhist Diaspora.
The SB DIaspora has also been weaponized to serve the interest of Uncle Sam! What a circus!

          Poor RTF,
          .
          No likes, four dislikes.
          .
I’m not interfering, but I feel that you disapprove of Gnanasara and of racism. You seem to be afraid that your own government has no ethics. I think that they have a very weak sense, but easily overridden by self interest.
          .
On the other hand, I feel that well nigh all of us have given up on Dinuk.

I dunno about the Bros following CIA orders, Dinuk, but thanks for drawing attention to the Yale publication.
It led me to a very interesting review at https://networks.h-net.org/node/6060/reviews/4677763/ruth-ford-cold-war-monks-buddhism-and-americas-secret-strategy

I wish I could look at a copy somewhere. Doubt if the US library (does it still operate here?) would stock it.

Whatever/whoever may be behind these guys, the main problem is how do we ward off this latest blow. Let’s hope the Bar comes out to tackle the threats it poses to whatever semblance of judicial order we still have. Thanks to the CPA for standing up. May they stay safe.

I’m beginning to wish, for the umpteenth time in the last 40+ years that I hadnt thrown away my British citizenship when I decided to settle down here in 1975. There was no dual citizenship here then.

          MF,
You are not alone, there are many, feel the same in this blessed country, which we call mother country for one reason or the other.
It may be Race, Religion, class, financial standing, political clout or having the wrong clout!! I say this, remembering Gamini F’s 1970’s Dehiwela House demolition, because he got on the UNP rally Platform couple of times.
What a country, what a people, who, do not ever learn from their mistakes!
Soon after we were living in great country, being the few ones in the world except Russia Cuba and the eastern block to BOAST that they had a system of EXIT visas, to leave their own country, declared as the DEMOCRATIC SOCIALIST REPUBLIC OF SL” demonstrating to the whole world what limitless D E M O’cracy we were?!
That was by SIRI MAO WRDB, FRDB AND COLVIN R DeSilva’s Trotskyite blend, which has to be tweaked by the R Bros., Inc., to match the Californian style.
Await with baited breath, when the rush for it starts!!!
          Fun and Frolic!!!!
I may be mistaken for demon, trying a joke at suffering of masses.
          No not at all.
Hope you get my well intentioned message.

Fool me once shame on you.
Fool me twice shame on me!

Isn’t this what happened since the Citizenship Act of 1948 until now?
Tamils and Muslims are repeatedly getting fooled.
This country cannot go on like this.

The only dignified solution is to split the island into 3 mono ethnic nations and relocate people. Until then this drama will continue. That is the only way to save the dignity of minorities in the island.

This move by Gota is backed (through inaction) by the international community too due to geopolitical realities.

      Mr Jayasinghe,
      ,
      Thanks very for your analysis.
      .,
It is high time to question, What can get worse? It is enough now.

Everything is ruined so far as no one ever expected. What successes have the crooks achieved so far?
They are now trying to throw everything on previous government. Media seems to tolerate all lies. One-sided narratives make people even stupidier.
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-YXpJSPzKc

Please focus on the questions being raised by NOT WELL QUALIFIED journalists !!!… Harsha is very patient…. he knows the statistics. as no others…
But even small students now understand that the current CRIMINALs came to free themselves from ongoing high crimes. They were afraid that they would end up in jail if the proceedings were passed on. All these were not overlooked. Our people were misled through the mlechcha media stooges. Karma doesn’t seem to have done anything yet.
For the survival of a publicly corrupted family, entire country and nation was abused in many ways. Unfortunately, so-called good monks are very calm today. All because the place is a monk placed in Sri Lankan society.

        LLM,
        Well said.
Yours, “It is high time to question, what can get worse? It is enough now.”
So you say. Very good and valid point indeed considering Cost of Living (CoL), Gas, Fuel price, et all
The human suffering of the down trodden and poor Sri Lankans who voted for “Bath Parcel” & ¼ B!
I would agree it is gone to dizzy heights!!
The groaning and moaning and weariness of the troubles and tribulations is only muted. Not died.
So, not yet mature time as yet for distractions to stop or abate and do not rush!!!
Nanda has not yet got or gone mad and he will when this groaning and moaning persists!!!
Await that momentous point, already in the pipeline.
When all this maneuvering is exhausted, when all this maneuvering lay the desired “Eggs”!!!!
Then when it burst is the time, and as the village, vernacular literate in ‘Queens English’ would proudly declare with aplomb – THAT IS THE TIME, TIME YOU AWAITED.
Timely appearance of the earlier Avatar, (2006-2014) prior to Aukana Buddha statue prostration or Ruwan Weliseya Oath taking ceremony of recent origin of the present!!!!!

Nandasena’s Presidential cats are coming out of their bags. All this time he denied any connections to the BBS. Now it’s slowly becoming clear that he was the Godfather behind both the BBS and the NTJ. What depths will this hypocrite plumb to stay in power? Will Duminda Silva be appointed as Chief Justice next?
In the midst of all this, that other clown, Cabral, has issued a press statement blaming Moody’s for mentioning governance issues in their latest review. Is there any governance to speak of?

    • 13
      1

There was always that connected to this saffron robed thug and the BBS from the time they were in power the last time. It was this idiot in chief who opened their new offices and blessed them, and NONE of the Rajapaksa’s said or did anything, when this thug went around making hate speeches, and encouraged the brainless mobs to attack Muslim homes and businesses. They were complicit in racist attacks on the Muslims.
Hope those who voted for this lot are happy with the results.

Rajapaksa supporters may keep justifying the actions of the regime, but there is NO excuse for appointing this felon, thug, and terrorist, to ANY position in the country, I would not even trust him to sweep the road without resorting to some violence.

The Rajapaksa’s have shown time and time again, that they want a government filled with criminals, or cronies known to act like thugs, which begs the question why?
How about some decency and civility, and taking the opportunity to show this country that they are serious in uniting this country, and governing for ALL. The Rajapaksa’s never fail to show their racism and true colors whenever the opportunity arises.

“The failure of folk level Buddhism”
The failure lies in the elevation of the clergy to levels on par with the ruler. The rulers then and now worshipped the clergy. It is not folk stuff, but state endorsement.
    *
Buddhism was a success in India when it worked without state patronage, before Asoka and even after Asoka in several parts of the sub-continent. It attracted the poor and other marginalised people. The clergy worked among the people for several centuries and lived by the rules of the Sangha.
    *
Look at who sponsors and spoil the clergy.

Native did you hear our Clown education minister is proposing a SUPREME exam for monks which should be recognized universally according to him. I guess Sonic Ganasara will be the chief examiner. Lanka is desperate to spread Sinhala Buddhism to rest of the world. I wonder what will be the requirements to successfully pass those exams . Most probably hurling vulgar abuse, raising the robe above the knee, driving skills while intoxicated, intimidation—-

Keep in mind , one reason to elevate thug Ganasara is to shut the murmurs of disgruntled monks and prelates. Lately the monk who actively brought Rajapaksas back to power, has been issuing statements against the family. Many may soon follow expressing displeasure. Ganasara with his “project turmoil and chaos” is expected to take care not only church representatives and Muslims but those protesting monks too.

Gotas last and the only weapon before losing the war. Why there are no one, not a single fellow, to advise this man. Does Gota really thinks that he can now convince the people. Or is is he trying a fast one to end the legacy of Gnanasara and end him for ever. The mots incorrectable or the most ununderstandable persoon on earth. Gnanasara, Ganana Acca may be the next target. What a big joke and the most funniest are the clowns going after this man in neck tie collar and pocket no dollar and some desperate WAR HEROES in UNIFORMS AND ALL KINDS OF MEDALS whoe are want3ed for war crime. Let us see how Glascow receives the war hero. What happened to all the educated sinhala guys who are left behind in SL. Get down the biggest moron Blind Eagle to Colombo to now advise the KINK.

Rjapaksa’s are now confused because they couldn’t find any more ways to cheat Sinhalese people. Now they don’t have people other than those criminals associated with them. Even those criminals are threatening them and they have to convince those criminals by giving powers and money. Wimal is threatening, Gammanpila is threatening, Vasudeva is threatening, Even Sirisena is threatening, China is threatening, USA is threatening, India is threatening? Where to go? Only hope is military!

Manel, I think this is an old picture taken when Gnanasara first started his anti-Muslim campaign against Cool Planet etc. GR seems to be using him for some devious purpose and will drop him eventually. Gnanasara is a ‘useful idiot’ and doesn’t have a large following. Even his early BBS rallies were only attended by a few hundred people. He is only being given a lot of publicity today because he is of use to the Government.

Thank you, Paul, but I was actually referring to the guys on the Task Force when I called it the F….F…. I wonder if any of them are known for anything positive.
Guess what, I live directly opposite the robed one’s HQ. Watched the then Prez lay the foundation stone and later open it. A host of wonderful trees were slashed to make way for the 16-storey edifice.
On the opening day, 6 or 7 soldiers and an officer came to all our homes to search them for arms.
I refused to let them come in — a long story, that — and they were so surprised that they actually accepted my refusal and proceeded to the next home.

But “they” got their own back by changing our conveniently short and simple road name – 8 letters — to a long, rambling religious one which is impossible to enter on most official forms of any kind.

My worst fear is SL ending up as another Afghanistan. The Rajapakse dynasty will hold on to power by rigging elections & voter intimidation as winning an election by fair means is most unlikely. The peasants of Afghanistan thought the Taliban would be better than a corrupt govt &, similarly, there may be die hard Rajapakse fans still in denial in SL but it will be the military that will keep the Rajapakses in power indefinitely. In this scenario, SL will be another Afghanistan, controlled by a despotic regime, shunned by the rest of the world (apart from China, who will be pulling the strings), & a Buddhist Taliban dishing out our own ‘Buddhist’ law. Next step for Gnanasara, Minister of (Buddhist) Justice?

      Your fears are justified, PR.
      .
What was worst about Afghanistan was that few other governments showed any real concern.
      .
Individuals like us are concerned, but end up asking ourselves whether we’re naive.
      .
Blessings on you for your convictions, concern, & consistency.

    Typical freemasonic tactics.
Whenever the spotlight is on the corrupt, greedy, oppressive ruling classes, they will create some communal tensions, to get the public distracted.
Gnanasara is nothing but a tool used as and when necessary.
Thankfully the most high is going to deal with all these serpent seed creatures very soon.

          .
It sounds as though you had been commenting a lot here in days of yore.
          .
I’ve been commenting since 2015 when Yahapalanaya allowed us to comment after 2015. I make far too many comments, and they tend to be too long.
          .
What you commend re Professor Sivasegaran’s comments is valid. They are pithy, stimulate thinking and are often witty.
          .
However, he has not only his hobby horses, but also his prejudices, and even hatreds.

What’s to be done? We’re all human.

Thank you Sinhala_Man. I thought that GR was merely using Gnanasara for his own purposes. Maybe I’m completely wrong. Maybe like JR, GR thinks he knows what’s best for everyone. Like JR’s Presidential system, the new Constitution that GR creates may live on long after him. No politician will alter it if it disadvantages them.
            .
And Manel I quite agree with you. It beats me why the authorities have to use such long names on road signs. ‘Sir Mohammed Macan Markar Mawatha’ could have easily been named Markar Mawatha. ‘ International Buddhist Centre Road’ could have been IBC Road. What is wrong with these people?

I profoundly respect you when you said “….The problem with Buddhists is that they are conditioned to bend and pay respects indiscriminately to any two-egged being in yellow robes…”
You are spot on!! This is the whole problem with Sri Lankan idiot Buddhists. They have been hypnotized with that very popular utter lie that “cheevarayata garu karanna ona” which means you need to respect the person in the yellow robe despite whoever wears it! This is an utterly fake concept Lord Buddha never has preached. As you very correctly said, Buddha himself rejected unholy rogue priests and that is why he strictly enforced the ‘vinaya pitakaya’ or the code of conduct for the priest. However, even at that time and thereafter there were rogue priests everywhere and after the passing of Buddha these rogue priests had a field day and created this fake concept of respecting the robe concept. Only the day our dayakaya (laymen) get rid of that stupid idea and punish the rogue priests accordingly, the sasana will become cleaner and better.
