“Celebrate the idea that you don’t fit in. Find your own fit. Stay unique.” ~ Betsey Johnson
Never in the annals of Ceylon’s election history has there been a verdict so ruthless and final. What the voter showed just one and a half months ago was reaffirmed on November 14, 2024. The cliched egg was not broken; it was smashed to smithereens. In one of the most peaceful elections, the voter expressed his anger and disgust in the most decisive manner. Has traditional politics come to an end? How could the voters in the North, East, South and the West decide like one person voting? How could they come to a collective verdict and separately at the same time so without condition, so unequivocally? It was no big surprise that the NPP was going to be victorious at the end of the day; but no pundit or political guru could have foretold this sweep.
We will run out of all cliches. The rout of the opposition by the National People’s Power is total and absolute. There is no comparison in our 77 year-old history that can show any political clobbering the NPP just executed. All records have been ruthlessly broken. Once again, politics as an ever moving social force displayed that there is nothing one could rule in or out. Anything that occurs in politics is not going to be strange; nor could it be unexpected. Predictability has no dwellings in politics and those who practice politics as a profession, livelihood or a hobby cannot sit on his laurels and hallucinate about what deal he could make before the sun sets for the day.
Such cruel fate to await men and women of the variety of the Rajapaksas and Premadasas and Wickremesinghes did not falter this time. The cruel fist of fate was unleashed by the voters on all those who were considered ‘not suitable’ as a political party. Those who are elected to Parliament in terms of the strength shown at the count of the ‘manaapas’ would, especially from the NPP, be brand new faces. They were baptized at a very era-defining election. After seventy six years, the people have voted for more that one hundred and thirty newcomers. They were hardly ready to tread water in a chaotic pool; but they have been challenged to swim to the deep end. A hard challenge has been thrown at them by an unsuspecting voter and it is entirely up to the elected to show his or her craftiness and acumen.
Apparently, except the NPP and its leadership, chose to underestimate the voter. Such stupidity deserves ultimate punishment. That punishment is coming. And it’s coming in full force. In the same vane, the voter seems to have handed the NPP a blank check. But it is dated. The danger in such an overwhelming choice on the part of the voter has some dangerous implications. From Dondra Point to Point Pedro and from the Colombo Port to the Batticaloa Lagoon, the voters exercised a unique function: They made the same decision as if they had conspired earlier to arrive at the station that they reached on November 14, 2024. The danger dwells in the fact that as much as they were so much together in their decision to vote in a total newcomer to office, that same amazing decision-making process could be made to manifest itself come next elections.
Therefore, delivery of goods and services as expected by the voters is not only a must, it is the very core of the life of the ‘NPP-in office’. There cannot be any excuses, valid or not; there cannot be any delay, caused by external factors or by their own ineptitude. A nation that was deceived and taken for granted by her political leaders cannot wait any longer. As a matter of fact, the NPP is confronting an enormous challenge; its substance and the veneer are unique and unequaled by any of its preceding challenges that forced the nation to respond. Yet the people have not shown any unusual rush; but the very quietude could be extremely disquieting. Massive victories, especially in the field of politics and electioneering, is simply not good. Millions of voters expressing their likes for one party and dislikes for another in the polling booth in secret can reverse their decisions in the same manner.
The real test for President Dissanayake and his future Cabinet of Ministers and the bureaucracy is now and immediate. AKD has shown remarkable ability and skill in reaching fast decisions. His single-minded determination and the immense poise has served him well as at now; he needs that now more than any other time. Not only AKD himself, even his team has surpassed the expected limits of patience and composure. That kind of calm and steadiness was never in display in Sri Lanka’s recent politics.
Transformation of transactional politics into policy-based politics is approaching its realization. Decades of deal-making, decades of quid pro quo-politics has reached its concluding chapter. National People’s Power is no accident. It’s not Rohana Wijeweera’s vision either. Some JVP die-hards may vigorously disagree but that is the truth. NPP is not the old JVP but its roots, its very source is the unprivileged, unrecognized and unsung heroes of our own society. Their disagreements, their unpleasant lives, their battered childhoods and constant exploitation by successive politicians reached their Nadir; it took a long time but it’s here, now. Either we come to terms with it or get buried by its weight of anger and desire for change.
The country heard them and the message was clear and as sharp and defined as crystal. November 24th , 2024 in our history is as significant as April 5th, 1971. When the youth in our land took to arms on April 5th in 1971, and on November 14th they convinced their parent generation and armed themselves with new ideas and ideals and ably assisted by the social media delivered the country to the brink of a new vision, a new land and a new life. To say that a apathetic nation was rejuvenated is no exaggeration.
However, the performance of the NPP in Jaffna district takes the cake. In the absence of Tamil unity Jaffna men and women led by their youth decided to go with a Sinhalese-dominated party from the South. Chelvanayakam, Amirthalingam and Ponnambalam must be turning in their graves. The leaders of yesteryear are dead and gone. We need to deal with the now and present. A nation’s collective determination and resourcefulness must be be strengthened by the unstinted backing of the mass majority of the voters. And it is certainly coming.

“Yes you are right. Blank check but dated…”
“In the absence of Tamil unity Jaffna men and women led by their youth decided to go with a Sinhalese-dominated party from the South. “
I fully agree with you that the People in the South gave a blank check because of the mistakes of the Previous rulers who had number of opportunities during their rule with two third majorities because it involved Buddhist Sinhala majoritarian fundamentalism. Anura should thank the previous leaders who mislead the south people with the propaganda that Tamils of North East are against to Sinhalese or Sri Lanka. Even in the Presidential election, Tamils did not give any support to any Sinhalese leadership including NPP. But only after NPP or Anura promised that he will do more to bring solutions to the problems faced by Tamils in the North East. Tamils genuinely Trust Anura can solve the Problems of the Tamils. The Economic Crisis of the Country is huge. Over 100 Billions dollars debt is huge. It cannot be done with just having a two third majority in Parliament. It cannot be done by only dealing with corruption. It needs longer journey and longer stability. During this journey, a simple threat is enough to make substantial impact on the economy. NPP has to realise it and make sure his team understands it.

Tony, this is an emotionally unstable religious comment by a totally sick and twisted mind trying to capture the arrogant admiration of the majority Buddhist population when even the Rajapaksa sons were educated at St. Thomas’s College in Mount Lavinia. Harini is suitable for PM, the objection being anti-female as well. Give an example of how the Sinhala Buddhist country was ruined by CMS after 1948. Even the RC Archbishop after church people being bombed by Rasas to regain power, kept the religious population safe from the aftermath.

Tony……If they did, it is a good thing, right? Hope the opposite is not true and these foreign governments won ‘t come down on us and force the non-sustainable approach to boost up their capitalistic dollar value (like they did to Vietnam some decades ago). But maybe they are cleverer now and find that the balance between capitalism and communism works wonders for their dollars and will bring about global prosperity and things.

LS……it is certainly cannot be of the American perspective because America cannot be anything but Ultra-Capitalistic due to their history of immigrants upon immigrants coming to their shores. Any small deviation from that and they call it communism.

But on the global stage, the IndoChinese countries and China are doing quite well with Neo-Communism.

Definition of Neo-Communism: Communism aligned with external and unavoidable Capitalistic forces that will eventually form a global symbiosis for the greater good.

Hello Ramona,
Capitalism is an Economic System “where private individuals and corporations own the means of production and control the distribution of goods and services”.
Communism is “an economic ideology that advocates for a classless [and casteless] society in which all property and wealth are communally owned instead of being owned by individuals”. Square bracket comment by me.
Capitalism and Communism are mutually exclusive. Karl Marx wrote 3 Volumes (Books) on how Capital operates. Even Lenin recognised that Capitalism can bring benefits and introduced the NEP (New Economic Policy) to stabiise the Country after the Civil War etc. (1921-1928).
https://www.britannica.com/money/New-Economic-Policy-Soviet-history
I can’t find your definition of neo-communism anywhere, did you make it up?
Best regards
/
ramona therese fernando / November 19, 2024
Ahhh LS…….yes, they WERE mutually exclusive…..worked for the time when the concepts were new. Nowadays, it is too much work to make the whole world Capitalistic, and America already has its key countries to boost up its Capitalism. Trying to make everybody capitalistic will only create wars, pollution, and drain on the global dollar for 100-500 years returns, if any. Communist countries have now become Socialist Democracies (neo-Communists). Capitalistic countries incorporate socialist concepts to ensure their people work at optimum level. I doff my hat.

It reminds me of 1994. The year CBK whitewashed 17 years of UNP rule with a landslide mandate. People flocked en masse around her hoping for a clean, corrupt free Sri Lanka. Need I reiterate that her government was one of the most corrupt regimes in SL? NPP/JVP do not own such tainted history in governance so I sincerely hope that AKD will lead the country out of the current mess and re-establish law and order to force those who robbed national wealth pay their price for what they did to poor tax payers over many decades. I wish him and the new government all the very best!!

/
Jit / November 17, 2024
Ramona, although CBK did not wear Marxist robes, she happily called herself a pro-Marxist while comfortably hobnobbed with the traditional left such as CP/LSSP stalwarts. In fact, there were a couple of ministers in her cabinet who came from the traditional left. She openly rejected the aristocracy or caste hierarchy of her pedigree which was well reflected in her marriage. But none of that can guarantee a person would not be involved in bribery and corruption. Historically, so many leftists or even ultra Communists all over the world have been involved with bribery, corruption or nepotism, haven’t they?
/
ramona therese fernando / November 17, 2024
Jit….. there were only 2 Marxists in her cabinet? In AKD’s case, all are neo-Marxists! So we won’t have the same corruption problems in this new government.

Jit……Still 4 is not a large number either, out of 225 members and CKD’ s 15-30(?) cabinet members. Doubt she was corrupt, but trying to control the rest of them would have been an impossibility.

In Sirimavo’s first term, there were no Marxist parties at the beginning in July 1960. In 1963, LSSP and CP ditched their language policy of parity of status and accepted Sinhala only to join the government. For the rest of the term till March 1965, there were only two leftist ministers : Dr. N.M.Perera and Chumley Goonewardena.. In her second term starting from May 1970, there were Dr. N.M.Perera, Dr. Colvin R de Silva, Anil Moonesinghe and Pieter Keneuman.

The general expectation is, Socialists to be the opposite of capitalists who solely believe in the concept of private property ownership and profits. To be the catalyst to bring in socioeconomic equality by eliminating social and economic evils of profit oriented economic systems. Therefore, the expectations for a corrupt free administration from socialists is more crucial than we expect it from the capitalists. And when that doesn’t happen, the stigma is much heavier on the socialists than on the capitalists. Simple as that! .

CBK privatized far more than what JRJ and RP put together.
Her pre-election anti-imperialist posturing did not last very long.
*
The CP and LSSP allies she had were thoroughly discredited when they joined her to secure a seat each in parliament.
/
Jit / November 17, 2024
Of course CBK privatized much more government institutions than the UNP. Particularly crucial was mega government monopolies such as Telecom and Air Lanka which even Premadasa refused to privatize! Lasantha W and Victor Ivan had written heaps of detailed articles on the level of bribery and corruption that took place in these transactions.
Actually CP and LSSP lost their political steam when they joined Sirima’s UF government in 1970. Historical records show how the society ridiculed both parties by 1976 and how miserable they looked, for being allies to one of the most failed regimes in our history since 1948.
/
SJ / November 18, 2024
There is a difference between the CP & LSSP joining in 1970 when they were really partners and joining after the humiliation of 1977, when they were begging for seats.
The defeat of the SLFP in 1977 was owing to a combination of circumstances: the four-food surge in oil prices in 1974; the drought of 1975-76 and global grain deficit compounded by the termination of PL480.
Lasantha on corruption– I will believe mostly. Victor Ivan– I keep a bowl of salt handy.

I would strongly say that 2/3 mandate always leads to another disaster.

Not all of them are upper class people. Rajapkshes were not at all HIGH CLASS people if you would closely study their history prior to 2005 elections.

Rajapakse-politics created a world of thugs, criminals and various cronies due to the lack of proper enforcement of law and order. This can be similar to some sort of tribelisms in Black africa.
–
It is true that Sinhala-buddhist dominance was governing this country as there is no more war. But in sinhala-buddhist exremists activities, the JVP, which is now under NPP cover, was also heavily complicit. Combating Corruption – Is AKD Genuine?
.
(1) So far as I can discern, AKD has demonstrated SELECTIVITY in combating corruption. For example, he has not uttered a word about the ‘Panama Papers’. Is it because it has the names of some ‘captains’ of some conglomerates in Sri Lanka?
.
(2) Going by some of his ‘key’ advisors, it seems that he has not understood that in many instances ‘conflict of interest’ is at the center of corruption and abuse of power.

Those who imitated these leaders came from every category of humans. Very soon there could have been no free island called Sri Lanka, but for the mercy and love of God who created humans in his image for a different purpose, which now points to being carried out and humans redeemed from unbelief, stealing and lying from the bondage of the devil.

Sumanthiran has for long been running with the hare and hunting with the hounds. The Tamils of Jaffna have understood this. No doubt he is a smart lawyer.
.
I suspect he will be put on the NPP national list and get a ‘key’ portfolio. If so, he will have the opportunity to GENUINELY address ‘minority’ issues.

S is not the most popular FP leader in the North. Last time he scraped through as MP,
His conduct during the presidential election period was politically suicidal.
/
SJ / November 17, 2024
Collateral Damage?
The FP’s stars were waning in the North for long.
S was also a a big contributor to its electoral destruction.
/
SJ / November 16, 2024
S was not very clever to force the FP to support Sajith.
His actions in the FP were not particularly democratic and he is much responsibible for the split in the FP and its humiliation in Jaffna.
He is held in regard in the South, but the electors are elsewhere.
/
Dr. Gnana Sankaralingam / November 18, 2024
“S is the most popular FP leader in the north.” He received only 15,000 votes while Sritharan received over 30,000 votes. Had Sumanthiran not manipulated to drive some out of the party, he would have not got that. If not for the votes polled by Sritharan, FP would not have got a single seat in Jaffna.
“Last time he scraped through as MP”. Sumanthiran was rejected by the people, but votes were stuffed by STF on instruction by Gota/Ranil and he got elected depriving a widow of her rightful place. I said that the curse will befall him and it has happened. Very soon he will be kicked out of FP.

“umanthiran was rejected by the people, but votes were stuffed by STF on instruction by Gota/Ranil and he got elected depriving a widow of her rightful place.”
NOT TRUE.
/
chiv / November 18, 2024
His STF story is similar to Harini approaching Ranil. Sumanthiran in parliament accused Mara of corruption Gotha of crimes and Ranil manipulating elections. Hence Gotha and Ranil instructed STF to stuff votes in favour of him. If at all they should have stuffed for the rest, for keeping mum and seeking bar licenses.

The entire nation hates one man who tried to create a meaningless elitism and some bogus aura around his ugly pot-bellied frame-Ranil W.
Even Basil R advised him to first have the parliamentary elections .
Ranil W who thinks he is more intelligent than anyone else went for presidential elections because he sad he was carrying a baby across the bridge ! He thinks 23 million people swallow anything he tells them !
In his greed for power he destroyed many institutions including the UNP
This Ranil is the master mind of the Bond scam. It is time for him to face the wrath of this nation.

Why is this all-times abusive woman (Deepthi Silva) not accusing Mahinda Rajapaksa of this mess?
Is she like that stupid female teacher (was once dipped in Baira lake) who never changed her will for the Rajapaksas?
.
The epitome of stupidity aka Deepti always loved the god father of crime aka Mahinda Parai Rajapaksa and harbored a grudge against RW for hidden reasons. This evil woman needs to look in a mirror before coming up with such insulting statements. She must be such a toxic person.

This is not new to our people in our elections so far. Although the mandate is huge, they have been shown to have failed to make revolutionary changes. But the only group that has never ruled the country before is the Janata Vimukthi Peramuna disguised as the NPP.
A majority of angry voters have accepted the blank cheaque this time. They have swallowed the bait completely. Blatant lies have been induced to accept them.
Now the JVP has to show its ability within 3 months. You can’t always point the finger at others.
They have to prove their abilities.
I am very pessimistic as many of them are very good at spreading lies behind lies but many including AKD are unable to fulfill their promises. The exclusivity of senior politicians will teach them a lesson. I don’t know how they can function without proper knowledge as a Speaker of Parliament.
:
However, we will have to wait and see how they surprise us as they have been promising for years.
Even developed countries are struggling with their economic recessions today. The cost of living in Europe is rising dramatically, but not wages.

Here is what Deepthi wrote on CT on December 21st 2021:
“Similarly a government as soon as it is elected or in a a short period cannot show results. When it is a country , it takes at least 5 years to harvest your yield. Most of the economic factors that were present during the UNP were the result of the previous 10 years. We can also assume that some of the economic problems of today are the result of Ranil devious work, including the degrading of our sovereign bonds.”
I don’t think I need to say any more.

You can no longer fool the CT readership as few of us know very well that Mara’s leadership helped claim the war victory and was planted by the Rajapaksa family to bully the nation and politicize in their favor. As a result, this country became a bankrupt nation in the end.
–
There is ample evidence (please do your own search) to prove that Mara was in no mood to defeat the LTTE freedm fighters militarily, however, collectivism motivated him to do so. I had senior officers in the army who worked for the army during that critical period of the CIVIL war. Once, I had time to go to a Anurapura camp in 1997 or so I guess.

In fact during that period Mahendra Rajapaksa was the leader of the country and he had to give the leadership to the millitary.
.
However, it is a big myth that he and his brother Gotabhaya (an uneducated, but working man who survived his entire exile in the US) mastered the war of atonement after being out of the country for 15 years.
This is a big myth similar to Sinhalese coming from lion-hybrids.
.
.MaRa was not a good politician, but he was a good actor in his own film in favour of his family politics which was puppeted by Sinhala Buddhist radicals led by Pinguttaraya monks in that country.
–
Therefore, the religious clarity and the Rajapaksas are very much responsible for the chaos they deliberately created in the country in the guise of war victory due to their “hedgomonic politics”.
:
. We are well aware that the CBK government was able to fully ban the LTTE from the rich soils of the earth. In those days I once met the late Mr. Kadiragamer in Bonn, who was on a visit to Germany. Also the fact that the LTTE political wing operated from London and all the other fates they faced one after the other was another decisive factor for the deat of LTTE in thatlast phase of the civil war.

In general, Sri Lankan people are stupid beyond measure. Needless to share you, there are enough proof material in the web to prove it.
Soon Dilith Jayaweera s TV channel (DERANA TV) introduced a story based on “Snake-carried- Relics to Kelaniya Temple” and made real fools of them. remember ?
My own information collected from the gate guarding soldiers, I got to know that there were over 2-3 millions of buddhist worshippers visited the temple after being decieved by the story and each of them were made belief that GOTABAYA should be the saviour to the nation. All of them became the voters to Gota’s election. THe same is the case with AKD this time, when focusing on N/E tamils and muslims.
.
All the people who were deceived by the said SNAKE-RELIcs story lined up to promote themselves DILITH as a politician.

Tamils getting rid of Sumanthiran is a good move. He is among few Tamils who run down Tamils in front of Sinhalese to please them. Sumanthiran wants to live in Colombo hobnobbing with Sinhalese which cannot be achieved by espousing Tamil rights sincerely. He has never supported Tamil demanding release of their lands or news about their disappeared loved ones. Sinhala politicians know this and used him to split up Tamils. He is only fit to be a lackey of Sinhalese. He was helped by Gota on the advice of Ranil to get him elected at 2020 elections by stuffing of votes by STF. This time there was no such chance with NPP and he was soundly defeated. Now he is manipulating to come to parliament through national list. What a shame to think that Tamils will regret their decision to oust him.

Do not run away with the idea that Tamil nationalism is dead. It was rogue politicians like Devananda, Siddharthan and Sumanthiran who were hiding behind Tamil nationalism and looking after their selfish interests, who were kicked out. See what Shanakyan said after winning: “We will continue our path of Tamil nationalism”. Mark my words, if Sumanthiran is expelled, those who were side lined will group together and Tamil nationalism will come back with vengeance. Also if NPP fails to address Tamil demand for justice (Accountability and Autonomy), Those elected on NPP ticket in Jaffna will get the boot next time.

Dr G,
Your credibility has been somewhat destroyed by your recent comments posted the other day. Your thoughts weren’t aligned at all.
And yet, what happened to the Mr Sumanthiran’s rejection of what he stood for, “Devolution of power “?
What does Wiggy, the most powerful politician in the North who fought for the “full implementation of the 13th Amendment” interpret the result of the North East election today?
.
What happened to others who struggled to fully implement a devolution of powers and the 13th Amendment?
If the newly elected candidates are against the “implementation of the 13th amendment”, what will happen now regarding the holding of the provincial council elections???????????????????????????????

Wigneswaran was a failure as Chief minister. Then the people gave him a chance as MP as they felt he will do some good. But he went the same way as most Tamil politicians. He wanted to lead comfortable life in Colombo, and did nothing to help suffering Tamils in the North. After Ranil became president, he surrendered to Ranil and received favours such as bar licence. Sensing that he has no chance this time, he did not contest. This is the same with other rejected Tamil candidates. Any Tamil who says that he will collaborate with NPP and get justice to Tamils is a liar. Tamils are not going to get anything. NPP ploy of new constitution is to get rid of 13th amendment. They will never hold provincial council election as their solution is pradesiya sabahs with decentralisation.

Anti Sumanthiran Propaganda has many parts 1 ) post nomination 2) post election victory 3 ) pre election 2024 . Involving different actors , diaspora groups, financing , agenda. Just think if people are targeting just one person 24 × 7 , obvious conclusion is he has spoken the truth and exposed some of them. Just the fact GS tells election conspiracy of just one individual is a give away sign. All parties have different agendas and interested in what is there for them, definitely not Thesiyam.

M.A Sumanthiran Vs. R.P.R Rajapaksha and others (Land Circular Petition)
(SC FR 494/2011 and Writ 620/2011)
In October 2011 the Court of Appeal heard the petition filed by Member of Parliament of the Tamil National Alliance Mr. M.A. Sumanthiran, Attorney-at-Law, seeking an interim order restraining the Land Commissioner General and other respondents from implementing the Land Circular No. 2011/04. This Circular deals with land in the Northern and Eastern provinces in Sri Lanka. The Court of Appeal issued a stay order on the operation of the Public Notice requiring people from the North and East to register lands by 20th November 2011. The Attorney General’s Department informed court that the State is reconsidering the Land Circular and that a committee maybe appointed for this purpose. The Circular was withdrawn by the government in January 2012 as a result of the case. This matter is to be taken up in the Court of Appeal in July 2012.
A Fundamental Rights petition was filed on the same matter in the Supreme Court and is to be taken up in 31st July 2012.

AKD, who is now on its knees before the authorities of the International Monetary Fund, seems to be doing nothing in the line of “Renegotiions” regarding restructuring and other recommendations. Mlechcha media also does not raise the issue.

Time for yet another confession: I seldom read Vishwamithra.
As usual, I just read the comments.
Thrust by the very eloquent comments, I waded in.
We have seen more major upsets, in Sri Lankan politics. Haven’t we?
The victory of Anura was expected. The margin was anticipated.
The only differance was in ‘the North’.
That was a reflection on the Tamil parliamentarians; Not on NPP.
Gone are Douglas and Angajan, and their crowd.
Where else could those votes have gone?

“We have seen more major upsets, in Sri Lankan politics. Haven’t we?”
You are right. I wonder why Vishwamitra makes this out as unprecedented. It has happened before in 1956, 1970, and 1977. I believe the UNP got 5/6ths in 1977. Let us hope the NPP is remembered more fondly than the previous landslide owners.

Hello, Tony the racial dog in human disguise, where have you been all these decades? Just because your memory erases the facts about Sri Lanka, you must not fool us on CT.

world s first female prime minister aka Mrs B was a product of a mission school.
.
Same goes for her daughter CBK, the first female President in Sri Lanka.

The incumbent Prime Minister is said to be a product of St Bridget but it is not the school but the person that counts here.
–
Rajapakshe high criminals have ruined this country to the core as they were unable to create a good citizen. The way he let his sons run amok in the high security zone back then was an immoderate act. However, the Thanakola eaters dominated countries of the srilanka belong to have always allowed this to happen until the country was declared a bankrupt nation.

Hello Leelagemalli,
Like you I am very cagey about how the NPP will manage to resolve Sri Lanka’s Economic (and other) problems. 2 days before the Election I met the NPP Candidate at my wife’s Shop. Her English was fine and we talked a little about the problems ahead. She was pretty nervous about entering Parliament if she won. She won by the way. One of the things we spoke about was the Drastic Effect that Covid19 had on Children’s Education here in Sri Lanka, especially amongst the poorer families around here. Basically they have lost around 2 years of normal schooling. When I was 9 years old I spent 6 weeks in Hospital and know that even that short period took a lot of catching up. So the question is how do you remedy this in Sri Lanka. My Gt Grandchildren in Scotland seemed to have fared much better. They were online pretty much from the start and seem to be on-track with their Curriculum.
Let’s see what AKD says on the 21st and if the situation improves I might be able to restart IT and English Classes.
Best regards
/
leelagemalli / November 18, 2024
Hi LS, good to hear you are not giving up on your thoughts of helping people with IT and English. Helping someone can be a syndrome, and I know exactly what it is. I’ve always had it, but today I’m in control of it.
I have few good friends (German and Italian) who are looking for ways to share their expertise even after retirement.
–
You definitely have a lot of experience in different fields. I wish the pensioners from your region (Sinhala, Tamil, Muslim or Burgher) can come together and share their experiences with today’s youth.
–
Be it IT, English, History, Literature or whatever, it will be very useful for the youth who are trapped somewhere in the social media platforms of our motherland today.
In our time (70’s and 80’s) we read a lot but today’s youth like parrots only depend on tuition vendors who suck the last drop of blood from their parents. For no other reason, every family in Sri Lanka is caught by tuition sellers today. I believe the more you connect with those retirees, you can also improve your Sinhala language skills.
In the mid 90’s I had a good friend who was an Australian living in Germany to let his Turkish girlfriend who lived in Turkey visit him.

Hello Leelagemalli,
I watched the Video, obviously the Young Woman Meera had a good grasp on who was who and the recent History of the Elections. She also recognised the restraints that AKD will be under regarding the IMF.
However there wasn’t a deep analysis of why the Tamils had deserted their Traditional Parties. I also think that many people underestimate the role of Social Media in shaping Younger Voter’s views on Politics etc. Much as I detest Facebook, it played a big role during the Aragalaya, which I saw directly from my younger Relatives here in Central Province. For my Grandchildren back in the UK it is their only source of News/Gossip etc.

The shameless course of Sri Lankan politics:
–
In 2024 again the people were misled by blatant lies. The elected leader is currently a prisoner of the IMF. Not a single promise made can be fufilled until March.
He seems to know nothing but “yes, yes to the IMF”. We should be thankful to former President Wickremesinghe. No signs of new DSA yet today. Liars on public platforms in pre-election rallies are dumb. Big stories are out of their focus. But for how long?
.
In 2019, Sinhala racism misled people – the topic is national security above race. The Viatmaga, consisting of professors and other experts, was part of their regime. Finally, the country was bankrupted and the President was expelled.
–
Good governance led the people astray in 2015 – a president tamed by the Rajapaksa clan into brainlessness. More than 270 christian worshippers were brutally killed and more than 700 injured on Easter Sunday Bombing in an unprecedented humanitarian disaster. Even after that, people have not learned from past follies.
/
leelagemalli / November 20, 2024
cont.
In 2010, Rajapakse tribalism misled the people – sold the so-called war victory to mislead the grass-eater dominated country. The Rajapaksas spared no expense and looted the state revenue for their lavish lifestyle. None of the sons of Mahendra Rajapaksa worked for their own income and did live on looted money. The NPP of Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna supported all these today. Both Rajapakse and NPP supporters are one. They are sinhala-racists who never give equal rights to minorities.
.Alas, this nation has a future ?

No matter, HA is Anglican or Catholic, I wish she would not mix religion with politics.
MaRa and Rev Malcom destroyed the society on and on.
Reverend Malcom was no consistent with his closeness to criminals and other political crooks in the recent years.
The politics of Sinhala Buddhist dominance bankrupted this country irreversibly.
.
Recently, Dr. HA and her impolite reactions to the media caught my close observation, to my surprise, she is now blurring the line between her NPP and JVP persona.
–
She is becoming the most violent JVP whose murderous nature has not yet faded from our minds.
The main thing for her is to target the gallery like some popular stupid politicians in the recent times (Rajapakshes) have done in the past.
/
leelagemalli / November 19, 2024
cont.
Former President Mr. Wickramasinghe, who humbly stated in public what would happen if the newcomers were elected to Parliament, also stated that he would support Harini if needed.
The reply from HA was insulting and gave the impression that she is not mature enough to handle it. In fact, she said she had no experience robbing a bank or working with criminals.
This reminded me of Dr. Angela Merkel’s classy and polite response immediately after the CDU was elected as a female leader to Germany vicechanzellorship.
–
Dr. Merkel was belittled by her predecessor, VC Schröder (mysogenist), for being a woman and publicly attacking her for being a woman and taking the lead in male-dominated German politics as “Kirche in Dorf lassen”.
There her reply was magnanimous and she replied “Time will prove it and people should not worry about such public statements”. True to her own predictions, Dr. Merkel has become one of the world’s strongest female leaders over the past two decades.

Hello a14455,
As OC has pointed out, there is an Elephant in the Room that most people are steering clear of mentioning. You have an extensive Bill to pay, for the more than 300,000 Military Personnel on the books. Not to mention the loss making Sri Lankan Airlines.
The problem the new Government faces is how to make the necessary reductions without creating the conditions for the Military to feel it must take over.
How does Sri Lanka reduce its Expenditure and increase its Revenues without impoverishing the County even more?
The IMF said “Despite these positive developments, the economy is still vulnerable and the path to debt sustainability remains knife-edged. Important vulnerabilities associated with the ongoing debt restructuring, revenue mobilization, reserve accumulation, and banks’ ability to support the recovery continue to cloud the outlook. Strong reform efforts, adequate safeguards, and contingency planning help mitigate these risks”. https://www.imf.org/en/News/Articles/2024/06/12/pr-24214-sri-lanka-imf-concludes-2024-article-iv-consultation-completes-2nd-review-under-eff

The military is more efficient than the government. They do not waste time nor other resources. I visited numerous army camps in the past. Hello Scot,
Those bribes the Rajapakse’s got are nothing compared to what the UK MP’s get from the Jewish lobbies.

https://www.declassifieduk.org/israel-lobby-funded-a-quarter-of-british-mps/
But this is just the Israel lobby.
Defence, oil and energy clients
“Over the past 12 months, Arden has spent tens of thousands of pounds sponsoring Labour conferences and events, including helping more than 30 aspiring Labour MPs raise funds for their campaigns.”
https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cvgl7l5yl42o
These politicians are also earning massive sums through stock investments. If you have inside information, it’s easy to capitalize. Rajapakse’s are earning nothing compared to these Western guys.
/
LankaScot / November 19, 2024
Hello Lester,
A friend of mine has appeared and given Evidence (for the Prosecution) in a Case brought by the Serious Fraud Office regarding the Bribes.
Now you tell me how much you think the Rajapakse Family benefited from “Baksheesh”.
You were very specific about the Israeli Lobby Payments. So are you now accusing the British Tory MPs of something immoral or illegal? If so then your adored Israelis are also engaged in something immoral or illegal. I have known for Decades that most (not all) Tory MPs are sleazy if not criminal. The Labour Party also has its quota of beneficiaries including Zionist Keir Starmer and his Taylor Swift Tickets.
How did the BBC obtain this Information?
“Arden was required to declare the companies it works with in the register this week under transparency rules”.

I never denied the Rajapakes are crooked. By crooked, I don’t mean Gotha & Mahinda specifically, but their associates, including family members. Are you not aware that one of Mahinda’s sons served time in jail?
Back to my earlier point. The wealth of Western politicians far exceeds what Rajapakse or the 225 can acquire in a dozen lifetimes. The 225 are importing luxury cars, while Western politicians cash in on insider trading, which is simple for the US Congress: https://www.bu.edu/rbfl/2023/05/17/insider-trading-by-members-of-congress/
Transparency will not make a difference if the economy resembles something from the 10th century. What will make a difference for Sri Lanka is a strong middle class. This way, the impact of corruption will not cause blackouts and bread queues. Corruption can be “absorbed” into the system because wealth inequality doesn’t cause seismic shocks that require IMF intervention.

Lester / November 17, 2024

“Looks like you are suggesting a Military takeover! “
The military is one of the few institutions that functions well in SL. The other is the university system, although Ranil tried to privatize it. Yes, military salaries are generally low. Not only in SL, but everywhere. That is the point. You don’t join the military to become an instant millionaire, e.g. the 225.
“can you produce any Objective Data (which every Company has) on what the Government Expenditure is used for?”
If you downsize the military, there will be a new wave of suicide attacks. This will cause irreparable economic damage. What SL should do is have mandatory military service, similar to Israel and South Korea. Social media is having a terrible impact on children in SL these days. At least the military could offer some discipline.

Hello Lester,
You have hinted before regarding your Family Connections to the Military. You are probably privy to the same information as MP Harin Fernando’s Father was before the Easter Bombings. As you didn’t answer my question on Military Takeover I presume you are in Favour?
As for your point regarding Military Salaries “Not only in SL, but everywhere” In the UK a Corporal earns £37,861 Basic Pay a year. This is around 140 Lahk Sri Lanka Rupees
In Sri Lanka “For 2nd Lieutenant (Non-Cadet) and Pilot Officer (Non-Cadet) positions, the basic pay is set at Rs. 23,025. The basic pay for Lieutenant, Sub Lieutenant, and Flying Officer positions is Rs. 28,855, while the salary for the post of Quarter Master is Rs. 30,220. The basic pay for Captain, Lieutenant, and Flight Lieutenant positions is increased to Rs. 37,045”.
So a Lieutenant (or Flight Officer) earns around 350,000 Lk Rupees per year, 3.5 Lahk
A UK Corporal earns around 140 Lahk; that is 40 times more than a Sri Lankan Junior Officer.
Qualified Nurses in the UK earn about the same as a UK Corporal.

Hello Scot,
As I explained before, Rajapakses have returned tens of billions to the Sri Lankan economy just by ending the war. That does not justify their corruption. But corruption is not what the anti-Raja crowd is after. The separatists want Raja’s head because he crushed their rebellion. Nanthikadal is equivalent to the Battle of Stirling Bridge. With all escape routes cut off, the Chola invaders were thoroughly vanquished (excluding a few like Leela, who may have escaped). I invite you to visit the battleground:
https://bandi42.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/dsc_1052.jpg
I am not going to equate Gotha with Wallace, as Wallace was more of a charismatic figure than a tactician. You can associate Mahinda with Wallace and Gotha with Morey. What these two achieved on the battlefield will go down in the annals of military history (guerilla warfare) as unprecedented. Even NATO failed to dislodge the Taliban after 17 years.

With great power brings great responsibility.

davidthegood / November 16, 2024
Rajan, surely this is something AKD can competently handle after being in parliament all those years. He has said all men are equal. That should suffice that he will try to.

Sinhala_Man / November 17, 2024
Dear davidthegood,
.
Let’s be patient. Let AKD tell us on the 21st:
.

.
15 hours on the 21st.

The future is not the NPP, but the IMF. Suffice it to say, the next “Aragalaya” will be more violent.
/
chiv / November 17, 2024
Doom prediction??? Did you predict the same after Kapputas got elected. Lanka has gone to IMF 15 times prior to this.
/
chiv / November 17, 2024
Sorry for not adding any chances of down votes 😅
/
leelagemalli / November 17, 2024
Chiv,
It is a million dollar question to me why Mr. Sumanthiran stood for devolution of power in the North Eastern Provinces but was sent home by his own community. what do you make of the situation ?
–
I believe that those who have emerged as leaders in the North and East may not be true representatives of the people there or else how can anyone discuss that topic further?
–
Rauf Hakeem or the so called senior Muslim politicians always put conditions before extending their support to any party in the past. But it was clear that this election does not require anything like that. It definitely taught all the lessons, people finally improved their thinking about their politics.

Looks like , Jester is frustrated, went berserk with his hand held toy. Thank you Jester for making my day. Can you give more down – votes, before comments close.

Lester / November 17, 2024
15 times, only one default. A default significantly damages the credit rating (ability of the government to borrow money). 2022 also shows that Sri Lanka is now unusually susceptible to a global economic recession (which will happen again). With over reliance on foreign energy imports and tourism. The next shock will likely see civil unrest escalate to a point where the military takes over to restore law and order.
/
chiv / November 19, 2024
Dream On. After two decades of Kapputa family rule, you just figured out over reliance on tourism, foreign energy imports, global economic recessions ………….. as people believe, IMF is controlled by Paris Club, in turn influenced by US, why will they want Military Rule in Lanka ?? Of course you supported Mahinda, Gotha, Chamal, Namal, Shasheendra, Shiranthi …………….kak kak keeeeeeeeee

leelagemalli / November 17, 2024
Dear Readers,
–
“The future is NPP, not IMF”- how many of our people grasp it. ?
–
Struggle II ( අරගලය II) is sure to have its initial start in a few weeks. Civil servants will clamor for promised pay rises. At the same time people will demand reduction of VAT with unaffordable cost of living.
.-
We are well aware that AKD and newcomers do not have the “certain instincts” to handle it with foreign missions without which the survival of the motherland is now impossible. Previous govts until the ” last two years” made srilanka fully dependent on China and other coutnries. That was seen a political masturbation of Rajapakshe family which is now for some reasons burried under the carpet.
–
If we know that the pilot of the plane is inexperienced, we as passengers will always have to worry until we reach the destination. It’s so simple, but the grass-eating dominants in Sri Lanka don’t grasp the small stuff

The Tamil electorate of the North had given up on the Tail nationalist parties somee years ago.
The local elections showed it.
The FP’s fiasco of supporting the SJB in September and the stupidity of the common candidate crowned it.
The old generation of leaders (SJVC GGP & CS) had become totally irrelevant by 1983. Amirthalingam destroyed himself by pledging Tamil Eelam with no intention to work on it.

Ajith / November 16, 2024
“With great power brings great responsibility.”
So far with great power brought only dictatorship, power greedy, non accountability.
Ranil lost because “he used the word “I”
Mahinda and Gota lost because he used the word “I”
Sumanthiran lost this election because he used the word “I”
I hope that Anura will avoid to use the word “I” .

First of all, congratulations to all the winners. Sumanthiran was the main cause for poor showing of Tamil parties in the north and east. In my opinion an egoistic self-centered man, who was more interested in himself and his advancement, and was using the TNA and the Tamils to further his interests down South. Like someone stated he really had no genuine interest in solving the Tamil people’s problems and issues but was running with the hare and hunting with the hounds and was wolf in sheep’s clothing. The people of Jaffna already realized this in the previous election, and he came last and should not have been an MP, but the powerful Sinhalese politicians down south did some gerrymandering and got him elected and the person who really should have been the MP was left out. What did he do afterwards, with his henchmen, deliberately created disunity and chaos within the TNA; to further his own agenda and this is the ultimate result.

SJ / November 17, 2024
You have used the word I to refer to yourself, is that a sign of losing?
What does it matter, as you have been a loser all along?
/
Ajith / November 18, 2024
“You have used the word I to refer to yourself, “
In your reply that word appears. But it is my opinion not to include you.
/
leelagemalli / November 19, 2024
Ajith,
–
Don’t you think AKD misled you and muslim community? Not getting a cabinet position in his new cabinet, the muslims may feel worse.
.
Why did Sumanthiran and others fight for a federal state if they are now rejecting it? why did they fight for their rights if these issues should be treated with total ignorance as of today?
.

Ajith: Do you know who in the human species uses the word “I”?
He/She uses the word “I” at the INFANCY stage. So all those you named are “INFANTS”.
/
Rohan25 / November 17, 2024
The late Mr. Sampanthan made a very poor choice not judging character. Another nutty egoistic self-centered Christian fundamentalist professor from Jaffna was also supporting his for the sole reason he was a Christian and a Vellalar, so it was fine and was trying to equate him with the respected Tamil Christian leader the late Mr. Chellanayagam. What a vast difference the later was a great leader who united all Tamils irrespective of caste, region, origin or religion. At a crucial junction for the Tamils Sumanthiran destroyed Tamils and the Tamil unity for his own ago and betterment.
/
SJ / November 17, 2024
“…a great leader who united all Tamils irrespective of caste, region, origin or religion”
Did he?
When did that miracle occur?
/
SJ / November 17, 2024
“The late Mr. Sampanthan made a very poor choice”
Did he not make a far poorer choice in selecting a superstitious defender of a criminal to get a key post?
Get real.
I am no admirer of Sumanthiran, but at the time, besides the ageing Sampantan, he was the only TNA MP who could talk sense in parliament. Most others could not make even a short coherent comment in any language.
Gajendrakumar was a good candidate, but Mother India would not have him.
/
leelagemalli / November 18, 2024
Mr SJ,
.
“Many others could not make a short coherent comment in any language”
–
What made voters elect candidates under the NPP? Or are voters equally misled by big slogans?
–
If that is the case, Why did the late Honorable Sampantan fought for the full implementation of the 13th Constitutional Amendment?
–
What is the biggest reason for them to reject UNP/SJB and SLFP/SLPP etc., but to believe in a leftist organization that was staunchly opposed to any kind of “devolution or a federal proposal for long-term Tamil goals in the country”.
