Dr. Vipula Wanigasekera
Many have questioned the futility of the Aragalaya movement despite ousting of the former President—a testament to the resilience of people who refused to be silenced meaning that if politicians fail to fulfill their promises, it could happen again in the future. This piece is written while the counting of votes for the next President is underway, as there will be so many to say ‘ I told you so’ once the results are known.
Aragalaya was born from desperation and hope, a powerful cry that resonated deeply across the island. When the uprising subsided, the elite class, especially those who despised the Rajapaksas, complacently suggested, “Everything is okay, isn’t it?” But everything was not okay. Poverty and spiraling inflation have left countless families struggling for basic sustenance, compounded by the denial of passports needed to seek work abroad.
For decades, we have witnessed a relentless cycle of political missteps that have scarred our homeland—each blunder a wound on the collective psyche of our nation. The Sinhala Only Act fractured our society, trapping the poor in a cycle of marginalization. While the privileged enjoyed opportunities, the rest were barred from decent jobs, forced to navigate a world where dining etiquette outweighed merit. Today, the ongoing struggle for access to English education symbolizes that issues in our educational system remain unresolved.
The shift to an open economy opened floodgates but left farmers in the north and east high and dry, nurturing seeds of unrest. The July ’83 riots—an event I witnessed firsthand—are a deep scar in our shared memory, a painful reminder of what division can unleash.
Instead of healing after the war, our politicians chose to ignore the roots of our discord, perpetuating a legacy of division. They failed to recognize that those who fled could have returned as investors with simple acts of goodwill and ratifications. Sri Lanka lost a golden opportunity for development thwarted by greedy leaders’ intent on clinging to power and instilling ethnic lines and fear of foreign invasions.
Yet amidst this chaos, Aragalaya emerged—not merely as a protest, but as a clarion call for justice and accountability. The echoes of struggles intertwined into a powerful narrative, uniting citizens against corruption and greed. Ordinary individuals transformed into activists, wielding smartphones instead of swords, sharing the truth when traditional media faltered. This grassroots movement flourished in the wake of the pandemic, exposing the hollowness of politicians’ promises. The results will determine whether Aragalaya was in vain.
Under an interim government led by a so-called experienced politician, the promise of eliminating corruption has remained unfulfilled. Although some immediate hardships were alleviated, hope for the future has dissipated. It is while writing this article, News of a court injunction freezing two properties in Colombo worth over Rs 140 million came to light , highlighting what happens right under the nose of the current President while the theme of this election being ‘ Elimination of Corruptions’.
The rise of Sinhala Buddhist rhetoric during the previous election, with many monks at the forefront, underscored the lengths to which some politicians would go to cling to power through divisive tactics. True patriotism lies in unity, as exemplified by figures like Dr. Shafi, who reminded extreme Buddhists the teachings of the Buddha.
As we await the election results, it’s crucial to reflect on the lessons of Aragalaya. This movement stands as a beacon of hope—a collective resolve that transcends political affiliations. The universal principles of Metta, Karuna, Muditha, and Upekka should guide our leaders forward. These are universal qualities with which leaders who are sincere in their intentions succeed. The elected President will naturally remember that a natural moment like Aragalaya is about reclaiming our voices, acknowledging our struggles for justice, unity, hope, and corruption-free development. “The universal principles of Metta, Karuna, Muditha, and Upekka should guide our leaders forward.” [ kindness, compassion, appreciative joy, and equanimity (evenness of temper)] – A nice one.
…
The heinous history, especially that of Rajapakses, came to the end with Aragalaya. President Ranil was a good transition human being to pull the country from its economic nightmare.
Non-democratic lopsided majoritarian rule for the last seven decades did uplift a portion of the people but ruined the country without peace and tranquility including that with a three decades long war with militants, with wasted resources.
Anura dear, as a young man you have a great opportunity bring absolute peace in the land. Best wishes for you enduring success in the beautiful country.

“You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time.”
― Abraham Lincoln
Lately It was expected Anura would be winning, but it was said 2nd preference needed to count too. If the end result you are going to see is different than you believed so far, it is not your fault. Local media was not enlightened enough to clarify the real situation to people. I saw only one external media outlet that said the crowd gathered in the NPP rallies indicated they would be the winners on the first count. Tamilwin like by creating an opinion within Tamils that that Evil will be uncontested winner. So, if you are in the trade of fooling the people, the 75 years of Langkang lesson is very eloquently delivered in the Lincoln quote.
In the world history’s biggest dodger, the Foxy Evil gave up his age-old party UNP, to keep protecting the partner SLFP (SLPP) rowdies, invented Toilet Commode as his election symbol, and copied President Obama’s Slogan “WE CAN DO” as his. He did not mention one single truth about the country’s status in the last three years, other than beating up Protestors in 2022, who created him this opportunity.
So far, in postal voting, the runner for Anura is getting only 1/3 of his votes.

HI Malayuran, This article was written prior to the results. So I could be wrong. I never said who is going to win except saying this result is the real end of Aragalaya. Anyone can wear the hat if it suits him
/
Mallaiyuran / September 22, 2024
Hi Vipula,
“So, if you are in the trade of fooling the people,”
I did not specifically point the finger at anybody. There is a custom in English when referring to the third person (up in the universe in an unknown nook) to use “you”. We few who do not see what is in the field & depend on media always get frustrated when the media twist their object from reporting what was witnessed to what can be observed or interpreted out of it.
Sorry about the confusion caused by me not being in detail enough on that.

Malli,
The JVP uses lies in its propaganda as much as any other party, such as the fairy tale about 1.5 million expats coming down to vote for them.
Anyone with an understanding of logistics would know how unlikely that would be, but most Sri Lankans, though literate, can’t count.🤣🤣🤣

Very true – I’d add to that, “So get up, stand up, don’t give up the fight”.
I’m very happy to see that each candidate will go under 50% in the first count, Anura should know he has to earn a majority’s trust going forward – which he can do by delivering on his manifesto.

This means that they will not be able to pass off anything as they see fit for people.

@leelagemalli
This means that they will not be able to pass off anything as they see fit for people.
_
The NPP needs just about 7.7% more of the people’s preference to have a simple majority in the parliament. If Anura is able to deliver on some of his objectives before the general election date for which he doesn’t need a parliament decision (e.g. no more state funded residences/utilities/vehicles/pensions for MPs and ministers), that’s an easy 7.7% to capture – And that should give some incentive to the NPP to actually do what they said they’d do.
Once he dissolves the parliament, he together with a cabinet can govern and tackle some of these ‘low hanging fruit’ decisions for which he doesn’t need a parliamentary majority.
As JR said all those years ago, the only thing a Sri Lankan president can’t do is to turn a man into a woman or vice versa. Let’s see whether all that power is then used for something productive, Anura has plenty of incentive to use that power for good to win over the additional 7.7%. Competition, whether it’s politics or business will ultimately result in better outcomes for the customer/people.

You are absolutely spot on. Ranil Wickramasinghe, Rajapakse clan and 225 thieves thought they have suppressed and eliminated the “Aragalaya” by force and walk away with their corrupt practice.
People wait for this movement and selected the NPP which was the closest party to the up rise of people.
NPP should learn a lesson from it and the mandate given by the people is not unconditional. They should eliminate perks given to politician and rule by upholding low without corruption.

… Aragalaya emerged—not merely as a protest, but as a clarion call for justice and accountability.
A clarion call for accountability, I agree. For justice?
Doing justice to the many, particularly the Tamils, who have lost almost everything, is a task, beyond the scope of an Aragalaya.
/
vipula / September 22, 2024
Agree, but the results from the North and East does not appear to be carrying that desire
/
Mani / September 22, 2024
I think the Aragalaya saw the beginning of a discourse of justice for the North and East among Sinhalese youth who participated in it. However, it was too short-lived to continue that discourse. The NPP merely hijacked the aragalaya and used it for their own ends. So this is certainly not the culmination of the aragalaya because most of the constructive demands that came out of it are yet to be realised. As for the people from the North and East, they are far wiser than the Sinhalese and know that AKD is not likely to to do anything for them in the way of justice – the results merely express their very low expectations of him.
/
Jeeves / September 23, 2024
Could we say contrary to what the southerners think the North-East people are more democratic and don’t think much in terms of racial lines as the the Sinhalese do.
Look at how many votes the Sinhala candidates got in the North-East and how many votes the Tamil candidate got in the Sinhalese area. The Sinhalese had a very good chance of pushing the Tamil issue to the back burner for the next 15 years or so if they had elected the Tamil candidate. Missed it!😊
/
Nathan / September 22, 2024
vipula, Tamils carrying out their civic duty should be seen as evidence of their maturity as citizens, not as proof that justice has been met.

… the ongoing struggle for access to English education
Depriving of English education was the greatest blunder of our elders. Had our children been allowed to pursue learning English they would have grown without the frog in the well mentality they had gotten into.
/
Ruchira / September 22, 2024
Not so fast.
There was no proper English education in Sri Lanka to begin with. There may have been in few limited number of schools in the main cities, belonging to Chritian Missionary movement and their off springs, but if you go few miles downwards, south of Colombo, even Maha Vidyalayas where mainly Sinahalese (Buddhists predominantly) studied, never had enough teachers to teach in english. You could imagine the plight of rural schools then.
.
So the idea that there was some english education in Sri Lanka during which time people flourished is a big myth.
.
Yes some peoole who belonged to the elite class, city dwellers, converts to christianity, and the likes benefitted, creating a big gap of inequality i the society, even a good education can not close.

This applies to both those who comment here and contributors of articles like this author. In fact if you trace back the articles of this particular author itself, you could find codger highlighting his inability to manoeuvre the English language with greater competency, compared to whom I wouldn’t know, as far as I can see codger may be good at detecting a couple of spelling and grammar errors, at times erroneously accusing of errors where there were none. And also I suspect a third party highlights them for him as his competencies are in the domauns of – insulting people, sexually expoiting and raping women, so they could benefit from his those skills.
.
But I highly doubt if he is competent in writing a piece of any considerable length on a given topic in a manner that communicate some idea to an english reading audience.
.
In fact from what I heard he was about to publish a ghost written piece insulting me and my character under his name, in Economic Times of India.

A senior NPP leader speaking to Newswire confirmed that NPP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake has secured the most votes in the 2024 Sri Lanka Presidential Election.
“It’s very clear that Anura Kumara Dissanayake will be the next President of Sri Lanka. We have won by a big margin according to the reports we are receiving from our polling agents,” he said.
Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister Ali Sabry extended his congratulations to National People’s Power candidate Anura Kumara Dissanayake, who is currently leading in the early results of the 2024 Presidential election.
Taking to ‘X’ Sabry, who supported independent candidate President Ranil Wickremesinghe conceded defeat to Dissanayake.

This is no consolation for anybody. Evil who fearlessly lies, after securing IMF’s guarantee, has been saying that the economy can be fixed around 2048, the 100th year of Ceylon freedom. But Anura did not fix a date for any of the solution proposals he made. So, this is not consolation for Sinhalese, their main problem at this time is the economy. They need to understand that it can be solved, but will take time. Here nothing for Tamils at this time. Their main problem is their rights. The torturous, agony-full stateless situation they are currently experiencing is a very vexed situation for them. Some of them may start to do well on economy, along with their Sinhala Brethren, in due course. But the dwellings, employment, education, peace from Rapist Army harassment, recognition by achievements,………….like many aspects of life they endure are on a much different scale than the Sinhalese, because their fundamental rights they received from Soulbury constitution is immediately snatched back by the UNP-SLFP union, in order to keep Tamils and Sinhalese dived for their non-disturbed, uninterrupted enjoyment of power, wealth and comfort. The “Sinhala Only” is only Bottom of the Well comparing with their daily problems. If the Tamils will ever have a peaceful life back like they had in British time, it’s decades away.

1983 July riots were organised by the Government of JR. 1977 riots too happened after JR’s victory. JR too was involved in the Kandy March against the B-C pack/understandings to solve the persistent ETHNIC crisis.
It is time for the new Ruler NOT to hoodwink the UNHCR with false assurances of reconciliation between Tamil Speaking SL citizens and Singhalese. The results released so far are postal votes. Postal voting ended. Postal voting took place between 4th to 12th September. Anura’s support surged within the last three, four days. That means a larger margin may increase when the direct voting results start to come. Unexplainable phenomena, North East and Upcountry Tamils’ postal voting also not showing support to Anura. In postal voting, language and district need not match. But the postal voting showed this unexpected result. One deficiency of NPP was for a long time it did know the problems in the Tamil area, but it did not act on that. North East never entertained Socialism or Communism, They never voted for any Left candidates. Up country is not that. It has been nurtured by labor unions. They are not as anti-left as the North East. But they, too, did not entertain Anura. Anura was rejected by the Sinhalese too. They too know a day not left bent. But they learned that Anura had moved out of it mostly. The Language barrier Tamils had not been informed about the NPP’s new path. So Anura missed the North East and Upcountry Tamils. The issue here is that when Anura accepts the position and starts to show the country that he is the President for those who voted for him not voted, the space between the parties will narrow and vanish. If that works out, the Parliament election should show a different ratio.

Any political prisoners should be immediately released by Presidential PARDON. They should be gainfully employed along with others who had been under close surveillance/ harassment by the defence officials
The involvement of Defence officials in
business or agriculture should be privatised. The people of the country should be free to enjoy the beaches especially the ones in the North and East.
The DRUG and alcohol menace in the country should be eradicated. Politicians who were BEHIND it penalised. Once addicted the country loses the economic productivity as well educational opportunities

The Aragalaya was a significant public uprising aimed at addressing the government’s inefficiencies and corruption, particularly under the leadership of figures like Gotabaya Rajapaksa. The frustration with political figures like Ranil Wickremesinghe and the Rajapaksa family is clear in your message.
What did Ranil do to recover from the frauds that put country to bankrupt, he only covered them and taxed the people.
You’re also contrasting the younger, more educated generation of politicians, like Anura Kumara Dissanayake, with the traditional political elites. Anura’s speeches seem to resonate with you, suggesting he represents a new form of politics that prioritizes knowledge and regulation, as opposed to the divisive, corrupt practices that have been blamed for the country’s economic downfall.
The underlying message is a desire for a fresh, educated, and principled political leadership to replace the old guard that, in your view, has misled the country for too long. You’re advocating for the rise of younger leaders who can bring knowledge and peace to the political landscape. It’s a hopeful vision for Sri Lanka’s future.

My Stepson and his Friend (a successful Businessman) came to visit us from Veyangoda. We got into a discussion on Sri Lankan Politics. When I pressed his Business Friend on why he was voting for NPP, he replied that it was a message to the old-guard that they should listen to the public because they are sickened by their corruption and graft that has bankrupted the Country and left many in Poverty. I asked him about the NPP/JVP policies and their past history. He suggested this was not relevant to the Election. He believed that the lessons of the Aragalaya would be a constraint on the New President. In other words, if they did it once they could do it again.
I explained how my Egyptian friends (part of the Arab Spring Revolt) had failed to see through the Egyptian Army’s duplicity, and now they have Abdel Fattah Al Sisi (a Dictator, in fact Trump’s favourite one).
He did not think that the US would do anything whatever the Sri Lankan Election Result. Maybe Codger, SJ ,Vedda ,Leela, Nathan, myself and others, are wrong to be worried, but they will continue to express their views (hopefully).
Best regards

LS,
I thought Deepthi has ordained me as a Jesuit, but, on closer inspection, it seems I was mistaken.
/
deepthi silva / September 23, 2024
Codger I have respect for the devotion and sacrifices made by Jesuit priest.
You certainly are not made like that .
From birth a hypocrite, Ranil bummer, a narrow minded racist and from a people endlessly exploiting the generosity and good will of the West ( enjoy in the West a life style they never had in the East and pose off as regular professionals and gentlemen, while in fact all these chaps are frauds and tricksters !)

Dear LankaScot,
.
We must all give ourselves a certain period for our efforts; and once that period is over, we must decide that the task that we have set ourselves is beyond us. We must ignore all advice given by friends, and cut our losses.
The job that AKD has now sis a difficult one; he must do his best, but some things are mandatory. He must get rid of the Executive Presidency, and he must give up active politics in about ten years.

SM,
“We must all give ourselves a certain period for our efforts;”
Yes, about as much time as you gave Ranil the Usurper.
“He must get rid of the Executive Presidency,” You wanna bet? Whatever else he might be, he doesn’t seem suicidal to me.🤣🤣🤣
/

He says “he must etc. etc.”
He also correctly says “We must ignore all advice given by friends”

“Will Codger,SJ ,Vedda ,Leela continue giving their opinions on all things under the sun?”
I hope that it will still remain a free country and that I can keep expressing my views, and you will have the choice to ignore them besides expressing your views for whatever they are worth.
Keep your cool, as it helps to keep the BP down.

” Keep your cool, as it helps to keep the BP down.”
Invaluable, yet unsought consultation for your Munthanais! You reduced Pirre Trudeau’s complex maxim of “Don’t go scratch other’s back because you have nothing to say or do; then you get scratched on your face” to be feed-able easily to your Comrades! Let them have a mouthful of it! But you missed the lesson from Evil’s election, i.e., while carrying the Toilet Commode but claiming it as a Gas Cylinder is not going to fool anyone.
Visvamitra bore Sakunthala to Angel Menaka by sleeping without her. The Child became the mother of all India. You slept with so many prostitutes and so many germs germinated. But all are swept into the garbage dump by you at the end. Stalinism is gone, Marxism is gone, Maoism is gone! Siri Ma O gone, Bathiudeen gone, Old Rowdy Dynasty gone even without a trace of ashes. Vasanthi starred in the Blue Ocean Mechanical company promotions, but Deva went back to his old Green Master Evil, because he calculates his commission very accurately by figuring out who would lose in the next round. You are digging the garbage to pair among a few chaffs to collect support for Wijeweera’s foot licker Gunaratnam. “Palaya Kurudi Kathavai Thiravadi for Gunaratnam to come in”!
A pathless birth to go forward has become an orphan! Pity!!

Your writing reminds me of one Shenali! You know, Shenali Waduge ! The unhappy Rajapaksa fake patriot! It depresses me for a couple of days when I see her photo! I hope you too will retire!
Perhaps you will write your autobiography! It will be easy! Only 4 pages at most!

Codger this is typical of the vicious poofs around Ranil ! Why should who the person be important It is our opinion which is expressed.
I don’t want to know who you are only that I recognize you from your curry smell in your breath and fingers !
Ranil and his girly boys want to throw mud and then think they are scoring debating points !
Ranil after using all State resources has lost again !

Deepthi dear,
“I don’t want to know who you are only that I recognize you from your curry smell in your breath and fingers !”
Oh, so you were the barmaid the other day? The rather round one? She did say her name was Shenali. But I am so interested in Shenali’s opinions.
/
deepthi silva / September 24, 2024
Old man codger, you seem to think poorly of barmaids ! In these countries there is dignity of labour. You sound very much like Ranil’s family, thinking they are high and mighty and barmaids are just things to be used !
What makes you think an European barmaid will give you , a pansy :stingy, bad smelling third world man, a second look ?
/

Deepthi dear,
“Old man codger, you seem to think poorly of barmaids”. Actually I do like nice curvy barmaids. So that wasn’t you. Oh dear, I’m so sorry. In that case, you must have been in the thosai kade I went to for lunch, Shenali Vilas. But I thought it was a man who served me……. Do you have a moustache? No offence, just asking.

“Ranil loses again after using all state resources!” I would like to know what public resources he misused?
–
AKD began his drives today by giving him more bodyguards that have cost the state a lot of money – despite his unique criticism of previous presidents and prime ministers.
.
A sick woman of your nature, in the 70s, you have a grudge with Ranil from the beginning. It has to do with your pathology more than anything else. You should better see a doctor and recover yourself.
You proxy Rajapaksa rascals should be held responsible for the downfall of our motherland.
Not only with Ranil, but any commenter who supports Ranil is bitter for you.
You really are a bitter ugly duckling who knows nothing but to cry foul. The more time you spend in isolation in the UK, the more likely your pathology will get worse (PISSU KOLAMAK). Nothing came from you as a Sri Lankan is ever positive. why is that ?
:
Get your facts right before bashing former president Ranil W who settled the dust after BPs ruined it by July 2022..
My elders always said that we should respect those who deserve it. I will forever respect Ranil and CBK, not the rascals of Rajapaksa.
/
deepthi silva / September 24, 2024
Leela so I detest Ranil, while you worship him !
What is the difference ?
Do you like Ranil because he encourages Mahendrans , Sevanayagams and Paskaralingams to rob this poor country ?
By the way, Leela haven’t you met a member of the EU parliament or a British cabinet minister lately ?
They seem to enjoy discussing confidential and complicated matters with you ! !
/
leelagemalli / September 22, 2024
A frustrated Deepti Silva (an elderly woman) has not come to us with positive thoughts about anything. It reflects her character. She often reminds me of a cousin on my female side who currently lives in Australia. She was also a pro-Rajapaksa voter.
“Codger, SJ, Vedda, Leela giving their views on everything under the sun?”
–
Btw, we should all have the right to express our opinions. I think CT permits it.
This funny woman living in the UK should know that. I am surprised that these basics are eraced in her thoughts.
–
At the moment, I’m a bit quiet and not at all optimistic about a better future with AKD-led teams knowing their potential. Wait and see !
–
There will be no miracles, however, the biggest question for me is how the people who could not afford to pay more VAT under the RW rule, will deal with the reduction of VAT, at a time when the state is short of revenues

A member of failed terrorist group is sworn in as president while all those who fought them is represented by forces chiefs who are behind him ready to take orders.
–
The scary part is along with him a few of his comrades (the old guards) are also being sworn in as ministers. I do not know why so many saffronistas, and members of other religious denominations are needed for his coronation. Many would have expected a secular ceremony.
–
Instead we see a noola ritual.
Does it mean Saffronistas are symbolically expressing their control over the president and the state, a puppet show, they treat the president as marionette and make them dance to their tune?
–
Sri Lanka has a long way to go.
Hope you trace the looters who just popped in your back yard, get the loot and return it to the country.
–
By the way I saw an interview in which one of the old guards assured the interviewer that JVP is in control of NPP, poor Hirani.

As I expected the mandate of the people to make change of political and economic culture is now confirmed.
I appreciate the change in the attitude of majority Sinhalese which completely eliminated both UNP and SLFP (SLPP) which took the country to remove the political culture. Now the people have the opportunity to elect a new parliament which make the changes that need for the country. The Final results still not known but it confirms change of political culture. First, the rule of law and justice to all is a necessity to change and unite the country to facilitate the change through out the island. The challenges is huge and people have to take part actively in the process of changing the country and it is not an easy task and need sacrifices not not only by the rulers but also all others. It is in the hands of people.

Title of article: “This Is [sic] The [sic] Culmination Of Aragalaya.”
The author says that he was writing the article while the counting of votes was underway. Am I correct in understanding that by “culmination” he means the election of Anura of the NPP/JVP as President?
The JVP was not a party to the Aragalaya and in fact they derided it publicly at times as being a leaderless and aimless enterprise except that, at the last stages of Aragalaya, Handunnetti was seen near the Parliament urging protestors to storm it. When the Aragalayists said they wanted the Parliament rid of the 225, weren’t the JVP MPs also included?
Author:
“Yet amidst this chaos, Aragalaya emerged—not merely as a protest, but as a clarion call for justice and accountability. The echoes of struggles intertwined into a powerful narrative, uniting citizens against corruption and greed.”
The Aragalaya arose as a reaction to the economic crisis faced by the people. The crisis had at its roots economic mismanagement by successive governments and it was accelerated by certain policies under Gota’s presidency. Corruption, the most prominent slogan of the Aragalaya, was not the major cause.

Continued from earlier post.
The winner of this election, Anura, was a candidate at the 2019 Presidential election and is a veteran in Sri Lankan politics. Most of those who voted for him this time didn’t vote for him then. Why? Has he undergone any moral/religious transformation since then? The only candidate representing the original Aragalaya, Bopage, is not even among the five leading vote-getters in this election. Members of my family, who were staunch supporters of the Aragalaya, voted this time for Sajith, who was beaten and chased away at Gotagogama.
So what is this “culmination of Aragalaya”?
/
SJ / September 22, 2024
“This Is The Culmination Of Aragalaya”
A little to soon to say.
Aragalaya only got rid of the President and PM. There was not much to JVP’s credit in that.
But keep your fingers crossed, for the second preferences can still change things– not because I want it that way, but as it is still a strong possibility, unless those who voted for RW hate AKD far more than they do SP.

Hello Leelagemalli,
After the visit by my Stepson and his Business Friend, I am now convinced by them that the vote for AKD was mostly a vote against the “Old Guard”. If AKD does away with the Executive Presidency, then he may have less power to deal with the Corrupt Time-Serving Politicians.
On the other hand if he gives the Prime Minister the same role as the UK Prime Minister then he will be subject to the whims of Parliament in the main. I have kept quiet about the Election mainly because I don’t have a vote (yet) and don’t know enough about the various factions and their History. To give an example – if I had voted in the recent UK Election, I would have suffered a huge amount of Cognitive Dissonance. As a life-long voter for the Labour Party, I would have been hard pressed to vote for Keir Starmer (a Zionist and Genocide Enabler). So I may have voted for one of the Green Candidates.
I heard two explosions in the distance here when the vote was declared, but I wasn’t sure if it was celebration or suicide.😢
Best regards

However, frustrated elderly woman like Deepthi though attacks RANIL, I still believe, RANIL s austerity program was indispensible if this country to be recovered from our economic fall.
Deepthi or the like pompous charactors cant even read a full sentence of a comment.
I did say AKD is elected by 42% (minority)of votes with over 58% (majority)being against him. Hate speech on anti older politicians-campaign became a wave among CYBER nets and that finally made AKD the elected president. Dikthala and Kalagola type pictures show today on TV screens (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ilGAO_iXc68).

all this sinhala only stuff does not matter . It matters to the old people here but not to the new generation. Hech not even the 30 years war and the end of it matters and that was only a few decades ago. what matters now is the winner and what economics they follow. if the winner is Anura
is he going to follow the communist model. is he going to work with India? I feel that if the investors in Sri Lanka fly away there will be no solution to the problems of the common people. and if that is the case there is a possibility of another aragalaya or even a military coup. And while I don’t think US will care much about SL, India definitely will. and with Bangladesh decidedly anti indian will they tolerate a similar situation in Sri Lanka too?
if Sajith wins by the preferential votes. He will decidedly be hanging by a thread. and another aragalays is very likely.
Either way the future looks super gloomy for Sri Lanka. I hope I will be wrong.

paragon, we can expect AKD who has now been declared the elected president of this nation, to keep whatever promises he made, without offering money to the citizens to get the votes. Two areas could be improved to reduce trouble to nation. English education is valuable for the future generations to be global. Vowing too much allegiance to the Palestinian embassy here when still there was never a UN land named Palestine with defined borders, can lead to defeat in the current ongoing war in the middle east which is full of Arab people who have abandoned their people who are demanding Israel land as their possession. Israel will never give Jerusalem for the reason that the resurrected Jesus will return there to judge and rule in kingdom power.

Congratulations for Anura/NPP as an elected President of this island. I don’t expect any changes immediately until he settles and think about what are the priorities for this country. Firstly, I would like President invite all the religious leaders from all corners of the island and explained that his government and the country need to unite the people together and treat every citizen of this island should be treated equally and this island is the land for every individual and importance of equality. No Single Religion is above the law, No Single race is above the law, No Single language above the law. So, there is a necessity to make changes in the new constitution that we should remove that executive President or any other Politicians or any Religion or any race etc.

Thank you Vipula. We can agree that the sheer disgust and intolerance of the hardships caused by the GR government that began with a few holding placards at Kohuwela junction around March 2022 and the mass gathering around GR’s home in Mirihana that snowballed into a near spontaneous uprising centred in GFG from April ‘22, the likes of which had not been seen before, culminated in the result of the 21/9/24 elections.
‘Near spontaneous’ is used cautiously as whatever sociopolitical organisation there was behind the GFG protests is not known nor obvious. And it really doesn’t matter, other than that the sovereignty of the people of Lanka is not to be trifled with.
Plan-do-check-action is a cycle worth adoption by any organisation of humans aiming to deliver something of benefit for humans; hence, had such simple and sincere desire and vision been present, any and every government could have stopped to have a day’s retreat each year or at some chosen regularity with all its members and performed a brainstorm of the ‘check’ part of where did we begin, what have we done, what needs correction etc and worked out what needs be done, redone and undone.
Seeing this as too simplistic, we are bound to make the same missteps that Vipula avers to.
/
LankaScot / September 24, 2024
Hello PD,
I have never been a fan of Brainstorming as a means to sort out problems. Generally the people in favour of Brainstorming are in the main suffering from “Groupthink”
To give an example I was part of a Brainstorming Event to discuss the degradation of high quality Video Transmission over a long distance Fibre Link. After many completely useless suggestions from various Middle Management and Project Management personnel, one Network Engineer ( a personal friend of mine) suggested that he had a solution and that all he required was an agreement to test it.
Without getting too Technical he had found out that the Network was giving precedence to Unicast protocol whereas we were using Multicast. QoS (Quality of Service) can be a pain at times. A bit of encapsulation solved the problem.
So one Engineer (like Alexander and the Gordian Knot) cut through all the Brainstorming Bollocks. So my suggestion is, if you employ the right people with the correct skills you don’t need to Brainstorm anything.
Best regards
