Those Jamaths Are Not Taking Us To Heaven!

By Silma M. Ahamed

Silma M. Ahamed

Shock, disbelief, anger. Sadness, empathy, shame, fear – all raging inside. It is a turmoil of emotions that is consuming us, like the fires that destroyed beautiful lives last Easter morning.

We have failed as Sri Lankan Muslims. Failed not because those terrorists were Muslim; if they truly were, they would never have killed, because every Muslim knows what The Almighty clearly says in the Holy Quran, that to take an innocent life is like killing all of humanity, and to save a life is like saving all of humanity.

So if those abominable killers were not true Muslims, can we absolve ourselves of their crime? How have we failed?

We have failed miserably, by distancing ourselves from our fellow Sri Lankans, our brothers and sisters of other faiths. We have failed to follow what Islam asks us to do, to interact with our neighbours, to share, to care, to love, to understand. And this, while we thought we were ‘educating’ ourselves to be ‘better’ Muslims, to be ‘enlightened’ Muslims, in the misguided notion that we would have an easier and faster ticket to heaven than our parents and grandparents.

And so we gulped down blindly every word that spilt off mouths of persons who called themselves scholars. We didn’t check if what they said was true. We didn’t compare them with other interpretations. We didn’t use our own intellect to weigh what was being fed to us, to see if it went against the basic teachings of our faith. We lapped them all up, whatever that was dished out, and we aligned ourselves to the group which was most successful in invading our minds.

And so there are groups, Jamaths, in numerous ideologies, sizes, influence and origin. We latched on to whichever that succeeded to capture our conviction. They set up their own mosques, their own madrasas, their own schools, and their own classes.

And in the rush to ‘study’ Islam, we thought we knew more than the generations before us. We thought we were better than them. What our parents taught us was wrong. What our Islam teacher in school taught us was not sufficient. The books on Islam didn’t offer the opportunity of belonging to a Jamath, Ahadiya classes on a Sunday morning wasn’t ‘in’ as everyone around us was going for ‘classes’. We thought our parents were not good Muslims. Everyone needed extra classes, and so they attended them, from grandmothers to tiny kids.

Now I know this comment of mine can result in angry responses being hurled at me. I also know that all these classes are not teaching extremism. But our community got so engrossed in the Akhira, the after-life, that they forgot how to live in Duniya, this life. We forgot to balance our life. To take the middle path in everything. To interact with our neighbours. Be national minded. Be Sri Lankan. It was a like a race to get to Jannah by defeating the other. Each jamath was busy trying to expand their number of followers, to outdo each other to see who was the ‘better Muslim’. In that blind and manic race, we forgot many things. We became arrogant. We became judgemental. We became selfish. And now we’re paying the price for it. Not because we became terrorists. But because we weren’t vigilant in our matters of Duniya. We distanced ourselves from others, put up walls in such a way that our children don’t have friends of other faiths, they don’t speak the languages spoken on the streets, our women don’t smile with their neighbours because the veil prevents it, we don’t honour their invitation for many superfluous reasons – halal food and haram activities, the list goes on. And we didn’t only distance ourselves from people of other faiths. We fragmented into Jamaths, building walls between families too. We were so dissected that we fought over how to pray and how to live our daily lives.

Now we say this catastrophe is a machination of Zionists, of the West, of India, of politics, of racists… perhaps it may be so. But who is there to listen to us when we have lost our friends, the friends who would have stood by us, because we put up those walls and isolated ourselves? Now they have forgotten our old friendships because we have been separated for decades. Now they don’t know what’s happening on our side of the wall. So they believe what the machiavellians say, what the instigators say, what the opportunists say.

Accuse me of being apologetic, but there is no point in burying our heads in the sand. There’s no point in living in denial any longer. Let’s at least now have the courage to put our house in order, tear down those walls, embrace our neighbours and remember that The Almighty created the Universe. So He would certainly want us to embrace everyone and celebrate our differences. At least now, let’s be truly Muslim.

Govt has to move inside Muslim people. If Sufis blew up saying Sunnis and Shiites are harassing us but govt is not helping us or if muslim women blew up saying MMDA make us slaves but the govt is not helping us, then we can understand. Less than 200, may be 200 even with infants and children and the blown up ones are factory owners and own Benz cars and have their own drivers, why should they blow up. what was their grievance. they were friends of politicians too even though politicians do not admit. Then how do you justify it.Definitely, they were idiots or they involved in Drug trades and some one may have told, watch out they are coming behind you. That also may need to be proven with evidence.

      Dear Ms. Silma M. Ahamed,

RE: Those Jamaths Are Not Taking Us To Heaven!
      Part 1 (291 Words)

      Thank you for the article.

Yes, those Jamaths, Tauheed Jamaths, Wahhabi-Salafi clones, are NOT taking Muslims to Heaven. In fact, per Islamic sources, and the prescient Hadith of Najd, Prophet Mohamed, predicted that the Horn of Satan will come from Najd, the Riyad area inside Saudi Arabia, and they are called Wahhabi-Salafies and their clones, ISIS, Tauheed Jamat etc. are in fact, Devil, Satan , Iblis followers.

They will end up in Hell-Fire along with Satan per Islamic Theology.

Dear Ms. Silma M. Ahamed, can you and your female relatives and friends, discard the Face coverings, Nikab, Jilbab and the Black Abaya, and get back to the attire of your mothers and grandmothers, the Saree and Salva Kameez? Why imitate the culture of the idiots who follow Satan?

According to two narrations in Sahih Bukhari, Muhammad asks Allah to bless the areas of Bilad al-Sham (Syria) and Yemen. When his companions said “Our Najd as well,” he replied: “There will appear earthquakes and afflictions, and from there will come out the side of the head (e.g. horns) of Satan.” In a similar narration, Muhammad again asked Allah to bless the areas Medina, Mecca, Sham, and Yemen and, when asked specifically to bless Najd, repeated similar comments about there being earthquakes, trials, tribulations, and the horns of Satan.

        Silma M. Ahamed,

Muslims have the freedom to pray 5 times, including Friday prayers and any other religious activities (legal) in a non-Muslim country and read Quran which is available even online these days with translation to any language.

Question: Do the Muslims really need other extreme organizations like Taweed, or Madarasas, or anything including those officially accepted ones to teach them “more” of Islam? This is where things went wrong. This is what creates the environment where extremists are created, This is what initiated the big gap between Muslims and other communities in SL socially and culturally, and this is where Muslims started to discontinue the path how up to their grandfathers followed the very same religion in this nation.

The Wahabi ideology might have been born in Saudi Arabia, but some of these organizations came down directly from India.

The writer says, ‘ We didn’t use our own intellect to weigh what was being fed to us’. Absolutely. Had every Muslim use their own intellect will see reason how all God believing Religions are made by Man himself. A God is man’s creation and not vice versa. Allow Muslims to use their own intellect and conscience without pouring down Islam by force on the young. Start with doing away with circumcision unless Medically adviced. Why tamper with their own belief, that God created Man. If God thought that the prepuce is not required, God would have created so. Religions try to deliver a load of Bullshit for the gullible believers. Try to be Human first and do not let a Stupid Religion dictate to you this falsehoods.

Ms Ahamed, when I grew up in SL in the fifties in Matale, I had many Muslim friends. There was no differentiation between Tamil, Muslims or Sinhalese. We grew up together as brothers. I used to visit my Muslim friends’ homes. Their mothers, sisters would come and talk to us so freely. They wore saris then and had their faces exposed, Their heads were covered by one end of the saree. but we could see their faces. I knew who I was talking to. But on my recent visits, I have found a great change in the Muslim’s behaviours and dresses. Women now seem to cover themselves from head to toe. This change took place after many of my Muslim friends spent time in the Middle Eastern countries with jobs.
Yes, as you say the Sri Lankan Muslims have distanced themselves from the rest in their own country which is sad.

Exactly, They are the super Idiots JD. I am with you. As you say, these buggers had everything, money cars, big houses, big connections and what went wrong??? Need a self assessment done by each and every individual about what life is. When those guys got a good life, they failed to see how a poor family struggles in the middle of all odds to survive. Had they known, they would be using the God given resources to the betterment of the society. Or maybe not. Once the CRAZY indoctrination sets in….he becomes an animal from the hell. That’s why they destroyed even their own children’s lives. Little kids not knowing whats going on with these CRANKY OLDER ones and the hands that should be caring and feeding them has blown them apart with the bombs they made to destroy others. This is a very good case study to every Parent about what life is and what we are going to give our future generation. Thank you Silma for opening up another dimension in the thinking to build a better society.

        Radical Ideas,

That is what Satan does to the Muslims. Make them stupid, lose the ability to think and follow the Wahhabi Salafies.

Just Google and search under Hadith of Najd? Also you tune.

You will know who the Satan followers are.

      JD!
It is unfortunate that the Sinhala Governments have stretched their hands of Friendship to the Tamils and Muslims with trepidation. The Tamils have been rather outspoken with regard to their share of governance. But the Muslims appear to have hidden agenda in dealing withe Sinhala Governments. They have tried to get the best of both worlds. Up to now they had it.
If only the governments were conscious of the troubles and tribulations the Tamils are undergoing after the war for the past 10 years, where the arrested suspected LTTE caders are kept in prison without charges. Lands being withheld without release, Colonization of the Tamil areas both by the government and Muslims, encouraged by the government, in the east. Business ventures by the army at the expense of the Tamils, forcibly entering the Hindu Temples to plant Buddha statues and the number of army placed in the North, Search for the missing people handed over to the army, situation would not have deteriorated.
If these matter have been solved to the satisfaction of the Tamils an out break like what we witnessed would not have arisen.

The Tamils will certainly have sympathy with those who perished on the Easter Sunday (not because most of them were Tamils) but sympathy towards the government may not arise.
Sympathy, Love and Affections are Reciprocal.

I think muslim were fooled to blow up every where in Srilanka, so that politicians would get enough popular support to change the NAtional Security legislation. Media has given the notion that one guy who blew up was the leader. I do not believe that. I think he was fooled to believe for some other thing. I am sure, the govt has got enough information from those muslim to find who behind this is. World is very confusing. Even you may work for them but without knowing what you are doing.

Sister Silma, sure we have failed in understanding Islam and living by its tenets. But it is NOT because of the Jama’aths but in spite of them.

Do you think that Heaven is our Priority? No. Not at all. We imagine that we only have to follow the rituals – Praying, Charity, Fasting and going to Haj – as routine and Heaven is ours for the taking. But, in real life, we are far away from Islam. I will just quote two verses, there more verses in fact on the subject, for you to see how much we disregard the verses in our life.

“And give to the kinsman his due, and to the Miskin (poor), and to the wayfarer. But spend not wastefully (your wealth) in the manner of a spendthrift..

“Verily, the spendthrifts are brothers of the Shayatin (devils), and the Shaytan is ever ungrateful to his Lord.”

The verses are No .26 and 27 from Chapter 17 – Isra.

Finally, our parents and grand parents were ignorantly religious but we are religiously ignorant though we are more qualified with many Academics, Professionals and Moulavis among us now.

Thank you Silma. Finally a voice from a muslim woman. I applaud you for identifying the actions of muslims which did help radicalize the youth.

Often people (from all races and religions) just behave in a herd-mentality without introspection and independent thought. I believe the real islam actually encourage independent thought and interpretation of the words of the prophet.

Be strong, seek to include others in your day-to-day life and not exclude or seclude your self. Do not allow radicals from the other religions (including buddhist and hindu) to view you as “the other”.

We are all one human kind. What happens to the catholics, may well happen to you; so work together muslims with the majority buddhists and our christian and hindu brethren to identify and root out islamic fundamentalists who espouse violence.

I urge buddhists to do the same with the buddhist fundamentalists who are destroying the true teachings of the Buddha by their behavior as exemplified by the very unpopular group – BBS.

Majority buddhists: continue to sideline the BBS. They do not represent us. They do not even realize karmic law: what they do unto others will ricochet and harm themselves.

    Nahi verena verani…..

Misuse of the word fundamentalist. It applies to Moslems who follow the Koran literally. With its unique morals, punishments and taboos etc. but buddhist fundamentalist?? No buddhist ever has any intention of following Buddhist fundamentals. Just imagine if we did! Better to use the word Buddhist extremist. Or Buddhist militant.

      JEHAN,

But why attack the Christians and foreign tourists?
Why not attack the Buddhists ?

Because of the ISIS ideology, the Satanic West and generally, the Christians are the supporters of the West , not the Sinhala Buddhists.

The Ganasara and NZ bombings are just distractions to mislead.

Why should you be a good Muslim? (or a Buddhist/Christian/Hindu/tribal etc.)

    Be a good human being.

You have a good brain (as a human being), use it to the maximum.

    That’s enough for peace.

Just make request to your so called almighty; in your prayers to appear before you, physically.

His/her failure should convince that there’s no such being.

Or there might be beings called gods but they’re not almighty.

Why is it necessary to take Different Roads to reach god’s kingdom, if there is one. Just leave the god alone and do what is right. I am sure you are not stealing, and murdering because your religion or god said so. It is on your own free will and according to your own thinking.

Misinterpretation of the word, “Nafs as Soul” in the translations of Qur’an leads to terrorism.
Roohu means Soul & Nafs means Ego
Kuthulukum Nafs & Unkuthulukum Nafs”, both are translated as “Kill The Soul & Kill Your Soul”
Even an Idiot Will Know that you cannot kill an immateriel part (Soul), of a human being By an another
Where else the meanings, should be “Kill the ego & Kill your ego”
Luckily Qur’an 4:29, misinterpreted as “Do not kill your soul”. Otherwise, all followers of translations will be “Suicide Bombers

Kafiroon ~ Knower, living in the duality.

      Muslim,

How many Muslims know what Islam is all about? Only 23% according to Pew Research, 2016, and they say that 23% of Muslims Islam is against terrorism.

Yet, 7 percent who call themselves Muslims and Islamic commit terrorism, NOT for religious reasons, but for political reasons. The balance have no opinion, and they do not know. So, only 23% of Muslims know Islam?

How many Muslims have read the Quran and understand in the language they know? The Hadith?

How many Jews, Christians, Buddhists have read the Old Testament, Torah, New Testament and Tipitaka and understand in the language they know?

They all follow the interpretations given.

I commend you for being brave to say it like it has been. Perhaps muslims changed since 9/11. People who interacted freely and were conservatively dressed got into burkas overnight and in the eyes of the others started to live rather secret lives behind those closed walls. Although Muslim men always grew beards, those long beards appeared more frequently. Even in sporting circles – especially cricket, Pakistanis and English and South African cricketers suddenly started to grow beards and make references to Alla at any given opportunity. In Sri Lanka, it sure seemed like the muslims only came out to mingle during business hours and were happy to slip behind the walks again. If not all Muslims wanted to be do, you are right in saying that they did nothing to show that they did not share the ideology that trouble making muslims do. What’s happening in the East and what the likes of Rishad B is doing will make the Sinhalese even more suspicious if the muslims.

These despicable terrorists were doing the work of the Devil. This is not Islam, this is a group of totally insane people, who stupidly sacrificed their lives, for what? What they have done goes against their religion, and only innocent Muslims will now face the consequences, of their vicious act. Mosques should continue to refuse burial to these anti Islamic people, and tell their worshippers to report anyone they suspect of planning further attacks. Muslims have responded well, cooperating with law enforcement, and should reject these criminals, and their extremist views.

I share your view my dear and yes we really failed by underestimating danger of Wahhabism. Yes we have failed by being silent when we had opportunities to have our says. Yes we failed by allowing our children to lead us and we blindly followed them like ducks. Yes we failed when traditional ulemas were intimidated and threatened by these dajjals for long time.
We all have homework now to sit and figure this mess out in the way of searching for the needle in the hays.

If there is an all-powerful and all-loving god, then he/she would never be asking for blood sacrifice. Gods asking for blood-sacrifices existed when humans were still to become civilized. Gods of the uncivilized continue to call for death and destruction, continue to seek to cause pain and sadness. Such gods exist only in the minds of the criminally idiotic.

Those Jamaths Are Not Taking Us To Heaven!

You are forced to make this statement out of fear. Those Jamaths cant take you Heaven because the Minorities in Sinhala Lanka are in “HELL” .Watch the Channel 4 Programme ” Killing Fields.”. The muslims in Sri Lanka were a moderate bunch but BBS ( with Gotha as Patron) exremism provided the breeding ground for ISIS to export and recruit and now we are in a Shit hole. The more Muslims the Security Forces arrest the more radicalisation there will be. They dont have to resort to suicide bombing and I am sure the World knows what happens in London , Paris and other European centres. Once they are radicalised all they need is a knife just like in Westminister & Embankment near the Parliament and they will kill and cause Havoc. After defeating the LTTE there was a vaccum which has now been filled by ISIS thanks to MR & Gotha. Gotha the mass MURDERER talks about eradicating Radical Islam and if the West has failed to do it how is Gotha going to achieve it without killing all the Muslims. He is elctioneering. The life has been transformed in Sinhala Lanka and no where is safe with Shopping Centres special target for knife attacks.

It is perhaps not easy just now, caught up as we are in the emotion of the moment, to take a sober, objective and rational view of what has happened and the reasons for it. So, it is good to see someone from the Muslim faith write as sensibly as Ms Silma M Ahamed has. We are all flawed creatures but we do not take kindly when others point our flaws to us but if we discover them ourselves we are more likely to want to change. It takes courage and honesty to say as Ms Ahamed has done that, “We have failed miserably, by distancing ourselves from our fellow Sri Lankans, our brothers and sisters of other faiths”. But what she has said of her community can well be said, in varying degrees, by other communities as well. Even terrible events can help to open our eyes to where we have erred and show the way to better conduct in the future, and it is to be hoped that all communities in the country take this opportunity to break down the barriers we have erected that have made us distance ourselves from each other. For each community, the initiative must ideally come from itself. But as a non Muslim, I may say that one important area the SL Muslims may care to look at is religion based politics. For instance is not a political party like the SLMC which is so obviously faith based, as stated in its name itself, an instrument for division?

    SIMA AHMAMED.

I’m very much happy to see from you this writing. May Allah bless you for this. Keep up your moderate new. I’m happy to see a Sri Lanka Muslim lady writes like this with moderation. I agree with you 100% we have failed to master the arts of living among our multicultural society. Sinhalese people have been kind to us, have been tolerating us, and yet, a few radical damage our good name by this action. We are really sorry for all victims of these attacks and for their families. I can not image how Sri Lankans could do this for any follow Sri Lankans like this. It is horrible and Each Sri Lankan Muslim in Sri Lankan must say sorry for this crime. I know well we can not make a generalisation: Not all Sri Lankan Muslims are supporters of this radical ideology . Yet, We should know how and why radicalism is intruded into the minds of our youths. They are so many external and internal factors that breed radicalism. . One of them is we have failed to read the text, context and the rational of Islamic teaching. It may be too much for you know about this. We have failed to appreciate the general philosophy of Islamic teaching but we adhere to literal meaning of the text without knowing context. We can not apply Islamic teaching in a non-Muslim country 100%. This is a fact but radicals do not read like this. They want to create an Utopian land in SL. Let them all go for Gulf countries or Iraq to do that…

    Dear Ms. Silma M. Ahamed,

“Ref: Those Jamaths Are Not Taking Us To Heaven!

Appreciate your good article. Very courage’s article from a girl from a society where male chauvinist Jamaths control.
Yes Muslims don’t need any Jamath to go to heaven. Starting from Thabliegh Jamath it is all these Jamaths who changed the complete culture of muslims in this country. The parents are the best teachers. These Jamaths are like political parties who want to expand their influence over the Muslims of this country. These Jamaths have their own ideologies which our communities failed to understand. Mosques should be rid off all these Jamaths. They kept the community suppressed in the name of religion. Not only Thawheed Jamaths, also Thabliegh Jamath should be banned in Sri Lanka. We all muslims sympathies with the tragedy that befell the entire nation. We muslims dont need any Jamaths.

A well-written piece. I can see you are a person with much integrity. I would like other people from other religions to write like this as well. The more we reflect on our lives and speak honestly with each other the more we understand ourselves – and each other.

Dear Silma, As an older Sri Lankan of the Islamic faith your words give me hope. When we were young our religion was a spiritual (not a fanatical) experience. Our relationships with people of other faiths were not hindered by our religious beliefs. We embraced all Sri Lankans and experienced trust and happiness in their company – and, I believe, they in ours. We must strive to regain that and we need people like you to achieve it. I know your parents are proud of their only daughter.
