“As the world prepared to celebrate Christmas on the 24th evening, three churches in the South of Sri Lanka were attacked by mobs”, says the National Christian Evangelical Alliance of Sri Lanka (NCEASL).
1. The pastor of the Assemblies of God church in Angunukolapalassa was surrounded by a mob of over 300 villagers together with Buddhist monks, demanding he stops all worship services planned for Christmas day. The mob alleged that there was a police complaint made by a Buddhist monk against the pastor’s religious activities. However, the pastor cited his fundamental rights and refused to stop holding services. The pastor was provided police protection from the night of the incident.
2. The same night, the Assemblies of God Church in Hikkaduwa was attacked by a group of unidentified assailants throwing fire crackers into the church premises and into the pastors residence adjoining the church.
3. At approximately at 11.30p.m., another group of unidentified assailants began to hurl stones at the Light House ChurchHikkaduwa. Some minor damage was reported with glass windows being shattered by the stones.
All three pastors have lodged police complaints in the respective area police stations.

Giving the foremost place to Buddhism in the Sri Lankan Constitution may seem innocuous to some but it has far reaching consequences to the ethnic harmony. This lopsided clause emboldens that Sinhala Buddhist Chauvinists; their actions are deemed as protecting Buddhism. It is no accident that the police appear powerless; it is rather a well orchestrated and planned events that are been executed. There is more to come.
The greatest paradox is that, after the demise of the LTTE, the Tamil Hindus will be tolerated better than the Christians and the Muslims!

“The greatest paradox is that, after the demise of the LTTE, the Tamil Hindus will be tolerated better than the Christians and the Muslims! “
Tamils are not tolerated but subjugated and some of their Hindu temples are destroyed and Buddhist temples built instead all over the North-East!
/
M.Sivananthan / January 1, 2014
Can you tell such Hindu temples destroyed?
Catholics and Anglicans destroyed Hindu temples. Hindus are able worship during the Dutch Times only. There is a Hindu shrine inside the Army camp of Kilinochchi!
So, dont try to tell cock and bull stories.

Burning_Issue,
Why don’t you indulge in some time off from Sinhala Buddhist bashing in 2014?
These attacks are a result of religious intolerance. Therefore should be dealt with by law enforcement at once.
Having said that religious intolerance is not a Sinhalese Buddhist invention. All nationalities and religions excel in this area. While they perach to others about tolerance.
Further, Christian extremists, like BBS monkeys, Wahabies or Salafies are no innocent babies themsleves. See what they have done to Uganda in the recent past.
Did you hear about the latest totally intolerant, anti-homosexual laws passed by the Parliament of Uganda? Extreme Christian fundamentalists from USA have virtually seized Uganda.
Yes, we must deal with Sinhala Buddhist extremists. But, we must understand that the situation is far more nuanced. And requires complicated solutions.
Cheers!

Ben,
“These attacks are a result of religious intolerance. Therefore should be dealt with by law enforcement at once. “
Please refine from being childish. You have no clue as to the effect of the Sinhala Buddhist Fundamentalism and how the state machinery is burdened by the clause: Buddhism enjoying the foremost place in Sri Lanka. When one sees the correlation between the clause and the activities of the hard line Buddhist with impunity, one needs to wonder as to why there is no police action!
Have you heard about the issue with the Trinco Buddhist statue and subsequent involvement of the then Chief Justice? You seem to lead a sheltered life and completely incredulous and ignorant about orchestrated programme about the Sinhala Buddhist Chauvinists! If you cannot see through this destructive phenomenon even after so much have happened, you will never see it!
/
Burning_Issue / January 1, 2014
Ben,
” Did you hear about the latest totally intolerant, anti-homosexual laws passed by the Parliament of Uganda? Extreme Christian fundamentalists from USA have virtually seized Uganda. “
Moreover, I do not give a toss about what Uganda has done or not done. Sri Lanka once was a beacon of hope for counties such as Uganda! I was commenting on Sri Lanka and what I said was totally relevant and appropriate. If you have a problem me as a Tamil talking about it, you seriously need deal with it; hope you will succeed!
/
Palmsquirrell / January 4, 2014
There are thousands of religions in the world but the vast majority of the damage through religion has been by Hinduism and Abrahamic religions.
Christianity was meant to be a rewritting of Judaism to be more tolerant and universal but it got used by Europeans for conquest. In the same vein, Buddhism emerged as a rejection of the racist and exploitative caste system but Sinhala Buddhist establishment have used it for their own ethnic goals.
I mention the above because I disagree that all religions are on the same level when it comes to intolerance and the impact of their intolerance in the world.

Ajith,
You sound like a TRUE PATRIOT of Sri Lanka !
I do not condone any violence or aggresion against others. I do however understand the frustrations of the majority population of the country when American sponsored religious infiltrators are into unscrupulous activities behind the scenes.
Let us not forget however that this nation of ours is:
THE NATION WHERE PEOPLE CAN FREELY WALK THE STREETS WITHOUT FEAR OF BOMBS.
THE NATION WHERE THE RUTHLESS LTTE TERRORISM HAS BEEN COMPLETELY UPROOTED.
THE NATION WHERE A MULTICULTURAL SOCIETY PEACEFULLY CO-EXISTS, DESPITE THE EFFORTS OF PEOPLE LIKE YOU.
It is the AMERICANS and the BRITISH who are the WORST HUMAN RIGHTS OFFENDERS on the face of the planet. Which other country has VAPOURISED millions of innocent human beings in Nagasaki & Hiroshima ?
It is the British who brutalised the whole continent of Africa with the slave trade. The plunderings of these two countries around the world (vietnam, iraq, libiya, afganistan) has brought misery to millions more. Yet for people like you these are the CHAMPIONS of Human Rights. What a Joke !
/
Burning_Issue / December 31, 2013
Before the British, it was the Arabs who dealt with slave trade. Stop being a moron and live in the real world. Throughout the history of the world the fittest abused the weakest. This is why many international organisations have been formed in order bring about some sort of balance. Sri Lanka needs to demonstrate and live up to the principles of those accords that she signed. Moreover, the Buddhist doctrine that many harp on about should be adhered to the full and showcase Sri Lanka as a shining light for others to envy. Stop finding excuses and detractions; face up and man up!
/

Dear Hafeeze,
Why don’t you be a true Srilankan. Why you are talking about Americans and British?
Why don’t you talk about your people and your rulers. You are interested in majority. We interested in minority.
You don’t have the fear bombs but we have the fear of white vans.
LTTE terrorism is uprooted but Rajapakse regime terrorism is rooted firmly destroying churches, temples and mosques. Multicultural society in pieces as the subject of this news is that three churches attacked. Is it the way you practice multiculturalism in your nation.
/
Strawberry Dosa / January 1, 2014
I agree Hafeeze… LTTE and terror activities were sponsored by the Christian churches around the word. Not a single church was attacked by LTTE. Mannar Bisho was once caught smuggling banned items including 9V batteries used for making suicide jackets in a false-bottom of a van during CBK’s presidency. HE was immediately released due to pressure from Colombo bishop. Mainstream media around the world including journos in SL are puppets of Vatican and other Christian sects. We know what American Missionaries did to Chiangmai and Vietnam, proselyting mainly Buddhist populations into Christianity using unethical practices. Christian churches and fundamental islamists are the creators of all the trouble in the world. Not once did SL’s Catholic or any other christian clergy ever condemn LTTE or Prabhakaran, while they denigrated our armed forces that protected our country from the terrorism the very Churches helped fund and promoted. Human rights, my foot!
British and allied forces bombing Dresden, kinning millions of innocent Germans, how innocent German civilians were killed by Americans and Allied troops of UK and France… Hiroshima/Nagasaki atomic fallout… Oh, and by the way, which Church opposed the use of Depleted Uranium Shells to kill thousands of Iraqis and expose them to ionizing radiation for many generations to cause serious illnesses and dwindle their population???? Where was UN to raise that? Navi PIllai, were you on vacation the whole time that happened? Why no resolution against America?? How the Brits killed IRA suspects is another matter…Why is everyone focusing on SL?? Because it still holds out against Western religious invaders to safeguard the world’s only HUMAN teaching that denies existence of creation and existence of a omnipotent god. Pardon my French, but Buddhism is the ONLY teaching over 2600 yrs old, that agrees with reasoning, science, promotes questioning, no dogmas or commandments… A true freedom. No rules.

Christians amongst us who have been good citizens – and those who voluntarily wish to join their own preferred Churches – should not only have their rights to do so it is the Duty of the Government (Police, in particular) to ensure their
constitutional guarantees are meaningfully upheld. Everything should be done to discourage violence and disorderly act by bigots from the other side
to force them into submission in the performance of their religious beliefs and rights. In recent times, Sri Lanka has gained an appalling reputation for religious intolerance – that certainly does not enhance the reputation of the Rajapakses in good governance. Impunity continues to rule – often with surreptitious support from some sections of the ruling hierarchy. The country is rapidly gaining a bad reputation as her place in the different recognised Global Indexes for good governance and society continues to slide. Just to simplistically deny them or callously laugh at them is not the way to go about if the State wishes to be identified as democratic and responsible in the community of nations.

I bet these Buddhists wouldn’t dream of pulling something like this in an area with more Christians like Moratuwa, Negombo or Vennappuwa.
They are like the “men” who frequently beat up their helpless wives but are scared sheit to stand up to another MAN. These people frequently become monks if they are not able be politicians. The rest who cannot even become a monk turn into side-kicks to carry bowls and umbrellas, like Dilantha Vithanage. Christians in Sri Lanka had never sought wrong ways for worship, and in all circumstances it had been very patient as this is not the first time a church have been mobbed or attacked. All what I feel is that the Government will do nothing about it, since it want to be in power under any cause and they cannot raise any objections against the Majority Buddhist. 1. Sri Lanka is not a Buddhist country spiritually. It is a buddhist country only culturally. Just as US is not a christian country spiritually but only culturally.
2. Given the above, minority religions should not disrespect majority religions by saying that believers in majority religions are damned to hell unless they convert to minority religions. This is what is being preached in minority religions (both islam and evangelical christian groups). Violence directed at minority groups then become inevitable.
3. Minority religions must be grateful that they have freedom to pursue their religions in private without disrespecting majority religions.
4. Much of the religious strife between religious groups has to do with minority groups not respecting majority, by preaching offensive dogmas disrespecting majority groups.
5. If minority groups believe theirs is the only way to ‘heaven,’ then keep that belief to themselves out of respect for majority, or expect the danger of retaliation. All human beings want to be respected. Including majority communities. Many times attacks against churches, mosques are provoked by latters unbecoming conduct.
6. People must learn to respect each other 1st ahead of following religious doctrine. Latter is the way to peace and harmony, and attaining higher consciousness in society, something all the religions have failed to do.

Its the delusions of human ego and resulting tunnel vision that create sense of separation/superiority.
Note: Consciousness (feeling/experiencing part of people) being connected does not mean all people have same degree of awareness/intelligence (part of mind, not consciousness), talent etc. Consciousness slowly evolves in individuals over time.
If you cause pain/hurt to other people, expect to receive pain/hurt in kind (in time). Strive to make people feel good, expect to feel good in return. Law of karma.

Buddism is turning out to be a curse on this country. What have the sinhalese really done for this country? You may proudly say that you won the war but at what cost? And why was there even a war in the first place?? You sinhese started this war out of hatred for anything thats not sinhalese! And what have your sinhalese rulers done to this country since independence? All your political and religious leaders have done so far is spill unimaginable amounts of blood and corrupting this country into a undisciplined monkey cage. And the paradox here is that the sinhalese masses keep falling for the same old cheap tricks over and over again! Gosh man have some intelligence for a change! What did christians/muslims ever do to you? Is it a crime to follow our respective religions properly? Is it a crime that our religious leaders arnt as Corrupt as yours? Is it a crime that the followers of these respective religions follow them better? Just know that these religions are only filling in a gap that your corrupt religion and society couldnt fill in.

Dear hurt citizen,
You raised some valid points I thought i should answer:
“What have the sinhalese really done for this country? You may proudly say that you won the war but at what cost? And why was there even a war in the first place?”
Think of the alternative. Prabhakaran in power, continuing war, child soldiers, suicide bombers…now all thats come to an end for the 1st time in 35 years. Go to liveleak.com and search for some of the photos on LTTE suicide bombing victims and you’ll see what hell existed in SL.
“You sinhese started this war out of hatred for anything thats not sinhalese! And what have your sinhalese rulers done to this country since independence?”
The genesis of this whole issue can be traced to the British who brought tamils in from india to manage their estates and other interests. The tamils were elevated to superior positions and the sinhalese were looked down upon and held down. Naturally after independence the sinhalese were eager to turn the tables. Same thing happened in Rwanda, Yugoslavia, s. africa and many other countries. Not a good idea to look down on majority populations with contempt when one is a minority. Similar thing happend to jews in europe. When people dont feel respected they rebel. Hence the endless conflicts in the world.
“All your political and religious leaders have done so far is spill unimaginable amounts of blood and corrupting this country into a undisciplined monkey cage.”
Despite grievances still existing in SL (as in most countries) among all communities, there is progress compared to the past. But I agree there is always room for improvement. An undisciplined monkey cage is more like Somalia, Zimbabwe, Afghanistan. Look at yourself. Are you able to practice your religion in your town freely? I know many of my christian friends do so without incident in Colombo/Kandy/Galle…. Not good to generalize catastrophe for the whole country when problems are occurring in certain selected locales.
“And the paradox here is that the sinhalese masses keep falling for the same old cheap tricks over and over again! Gosh man have some intelligence for a change!”
And do what? One can only vote for those who are running for office. Though far from perfect, at least this gov. got rid of the curse of Prabhakaran, something all the others failed to do. Ideally of course sinhalese should not have discriminated against tamils in the 50s after independance. But that was a response to what the tamils did during British Raj. Every action has its consequence unfortunately, especially among people of lower consciousness who are trapped in cycles of hurt/fear.
“What did christians/muslims ever do to you? Is it a crime to follow our respective religions properly?”
Properly no. But many of these pastors insult people of other religions saying they are damned for not believing in Jesus instead of keeping that belief to themselves. Even Jesus never talked like that to the Romans. They get to practice their religion in a majority buddhist country while insulting the majority. The people of lower consciousness then naturally react within the buddhist culture.
I know of a SL pastor who was getting their followers to destroy their former religious icons and then burn them in the garage. Pastor eventually stopped this practice after understandably getting death threats from anonymous Muslims, Buddhists, and Catholics.
What a way to show respect to your host buddhist country by disrespecting other religions icons.
“Is it a crime that our religious leaders arnt as Corrupt as yours?”
Maybe true in SL? But tell that to the numerous victims of child sexual abuse in christian churches by christian pastors and priests all over the world. Minority religions tend to be less corrupt because, well they are still a minority and lack power. Go to a country where the majority is christian/muslim and you will see ample corruptions. It is power that corrupts, even within small circles.
Also dont ignore the past history of Christianity which has carried the most blood in its history probably of any religion. The wars between catholics vs. protestants in europe for centuries (driving europeans to flee to america for religious freedom), the portuguese invasion of colonies including massacring buddhist masses in SL, and currently the hate instigated and directed toward gay people in Nigeria by christian evangelicals from the US. So much for Jesus’ love.
“Is it a crime that the followers of these respective religions follow them better?”
Not true. There are many wonderful buddhists in SL like there are christians and muslims. Infact most are peace loving upright people. It is always the noisy few who cause trouble in society.
Avoid generalizations because they create a victim mentality of negative energy that turns into a destructive dillusionary vortex in the mind. If generalizing, also then try to notice the many many exceptions. Latter is important for mental health by seeing reality.
“Just know that these religions are only filling in a gap that your corrupt religion and society couldnt fill in.”
Most countries have minority religions. That is because people are attracted to different things like different tastes in music for e.g. SL is still a majority buddhist country, which means Christianity is failing to fill that gap.
Also realize that in majority religion countries, it is normal for many people to take the main religion for granted and view minority religions as special. In europe today the christian church is finding it extremely difficult to grow. Majority europeans view christianity with scorn the same way you may view the buddhists. Only places christianity is growing is among poor countries like S. america, Africa and Asia. That is because foreign churches go to these poor places and provide resources that the governments fail to do. The churches also take advantage of people’s lack of education and brain wash them like they are doing in poor Nigerian communities against the gays who struggle to survive in those poor communities.
Religion has always been about money, status and power. Christianity is no exception. Real spirituality is of a different order. Good luck on your journey.

Uneducated people who do not know what Buddhism is, are attaching other religious institutions. May be BB is behind these attacks

None of these acts can prevent the word of God being preached more and more non Christians are hungry for the word of God.
You can damage a church but you can not damage a believers heart. May the good God show his kindness to those involved in the attacks.

The heading says 3 churches were attacked but,
1) On first instance it was only an argument between a NGO funded pastor and a thug in robes and his followers. No attack.
2) On second instance it was throwing fire crackers, a disturbance of peace but hardly an attack.
3) Only the third instance can be classified as an attack.
Even the photo used in the article must be from another incidence bc the report says only about shattered glasses. See how desperate these anti-sri lankan hate mongers are?

Denial and ignorance from morons like you is the reason why perception about this country is getting worst. Instead of denying accept that we have a problem only then we can find solutions!

How about some real facts without your baseless anti sri lankan hate? The article itself is contracting bc 2 out of 3 incidents are not any attacks on churches. Do you want us to believe everything your hate mongers spread and hide our heads while you spread lies about our country?
