Tiger, Still Burning Bright?

By Tisaranee Gunasekara

“For the enemy to be recognised and feared, he has to be in your home or on your doorstep.” – Umberto Eco (The Prague Cemetery)

The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, an alleged ‘secret-plan’ by Jewish leaders for world domination, took the occident by storm in the early 20th Century. Even after it was exposed as a forgery perpetrated by the Tsarist secret police (a sham culled from two works of literature – a French satire and a German novel), it continued to excite the fanatical imagination of anti-Semitics and became a major influence on Adolf Hitler. [i]

gota-and-mahindaAn ‘us vs. them’ metanarrative is dependent on an enemy who is ubiquitous, both geographically and temporally, who never ceases to live, lurk and loom, who can be summoned across any barrier, whenever its exculpatory or terrifying presence is needed.

That is why, even if the Tiger is forgotten by every Tamil, he will live forevermore in Rajapaksa propaganda.

When asked why the regime failed in its lobbying campaign in America, Presidential Secretary Lalith Weeratunga did not blame the Rajapaksa kith and kin festering the Lankan Embassy in Washington – understandably; nor did he mention Colombo’s inane decision to hire an unrated, miniscule and extremely expensive lobbying firm headed by a political-has-been from the Reagan-era. He laid the blame squarely on the Tiger, the same Tiger his political masters annihilated almost five years ago. “I must say that the LTTE has hired a lobbying company which is one of the strongest groups and is already in the White House. Its head is one of the closest associates of President Obama, so they are well placed. And the Sri Lankan government has not been able to reach that level.”[ii]

So almost five years after the entire LTTE leadership was killed/captured the Tiger is thriving.

The Tiger is the Exhibit No. 1 in the Rajapaksa political gallery. The Siblings base their claim to eternal rulership and unconditional impunity on the argument that they liberated the country from the Tiger. According to this logic, Lankans must willingly agree to a lifetime of Rajapaksa rule, as payment for the debt-of-gratitude they owe to their liberators. (No such gratitude is owed to the war-winning army commander who became a national enemy when he opted to oppose the Rajapaksas).

And whenever the Siblings are in need, the vanquished and annihilated Tiger is presented as a real living threat with undiminished destructive strength and wrecking capacity.

So in the Rajapaksa metanarrative, the Tiger is the defeated-enemy and the omnipresent bogeyman, the evil which was wiped-out and the threat which never dies. Thus Lalith Weeratunga can indicate that the defeated Tiger has more resources and more capacities than the victorious Miracle of Asia and can afford to hire the best of the lobbyists while Colombo is reduced to scraping the bottom of the barrel: “The LTTE has taken the Podesta Group… They have John Podesta who is almost an advisor to President Obama…”[iii]

Are we to believe that the Rajapaksa regime failed to be heard in Washington because Sri Lanka, which spends the largest chunk of its budget on defence, has less financial resources than the organisationally non-existent LTTE? Are we to accept that this monumental failure has nothing to do with the total incompetence of the Lankan embassy in Washington, which has become a haven for political appointees? Do the Rajapaksas and their glib Laundrymen think that Sinhalese are stupid enough to gulp the ludicrous claim that various pro-Tiger Diaspora entities have more resources and capacities than the Lankan state?

Are they right? Are we that gullible?

The Podesta Group was certainly not hired by the LTTE (which, apart from being organisationally non-existent, is banned in the US) or even the Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam but by the Tamil American Peace Initiative[iv]. The Tamil American Peace Initiative paid the Podesta Group US$ 90,000 in 2010[v], US$ 80,000 in 2011[vi] and US$ 90,000 in 2013[vii]. Thus the Tamil American Peace Initiative spent US$ 260,000 for three years to retain the ‘well-placed’ Podesta Group, which according to Mr. Weeratunga, is headed by a man who ‘has the ear of the administration’.

In 2013 Sri Lanka signed a contract agreeing to pay US$ 792,000 for just one year to Thompson Advisory Group (TAG), which is headed by Robert Thompson who may (or may not) have had the ear of President Ronald Reagan (diseased) and President George Bush senior (retired), on the recommendation of Mr. Thompson’s Lankan-born chauffer! Also in 2013, Presidential-kinsman Ambassador Jalyiya Wickremesuriya hired the Majority Group[viii], for US$ 50,000 a month (US$ 600,000 per annum).

That is a grand total of US$ 1.39million, for one year, for two lobbying groups which pale into insignificance besides the ‘well-placed’ Podesta Group.

And to retain that super-influential Podesta Group for three whole years, a non-famous small Tamil group paid just US$ 260,000 (less than US$ 87,000 per year).

Was Colombo’s failure to ‘reach that level’ due to lack of resources or lack of brains – and a superabundance of nepotism and chicanery?

Politico-Developmental Failures

The Washington debacle is a microcosm of the larger Lankan debacle. The truth is that the Rajapaksas have used the post-war years not to lay the foundation for a Lankan future based on national reconciliation and a consensual peace but to destroy democracy from within and set up a familial state. The current problems the Siblings face in the international arena are primarily sourced in his essential nature of Rajapaksa project.

The Rajapaksas do not want to share power even with fellow Sinhala-Buddhists. They have spent the post-war years undermining the provincial councils and evading a more comprehensive political solution. Since they do not believe in the existence of an ethnic problem, and because they do not want to permit the existence/creation of any alternate power-centres (including the judiciary), they have opted for a militarised and a majoritarian peace (peace as the continuation of war by other means).

This political nihilism could have been mitigated had the regime prioritised the livelihood, health and education needs of Tamils. The gross neglect of human and community needs in the war-torn areas has led to the creation of dangerous socio-economic trends. The latest case in point is the high rate of school dropouts in the North and the East due to financial and economic reasons: “Most of the dropouts are from poor families who find it difficult to make ends meet as humanitarian assistance dries up…. This situation is being aggravated by an acute lack of job opportunities and a rising cost of living.”[ix] If the regime does not address this issue fast, it will find itself facing problems on another international front. The ILO has already expressed concern about the proliferation of child labour in the North and the East and the appalling working conditions these children face, including very low pay[x].

Currently the most potent challenge faced by the Rajapaksas is a result of their reductio ad absurdum approach to the ethnic problem and the anti-democratic nature of their dynastic-project. The Theatre de bouffonnerie that is Rajapaksa-diplomacy is no help, but even the most effective lobbying firm cannot turn non-reality into reality.

[i] The Protocols first appeared in an abbreviated form in 1903 in the Russian paper Znamia (The Banner). In the US, Henry Ford published and distributed 50,000 copies in 1920, after anti-Communist Russian émigrés presented copies of the Protocol to American politicians, judiciary and intelligence community. In 1921, Philips Graves, a reporter for the Times discovered that the Protocols was a fraudulent document largely culled from a political satire by Maurice Joly and an anti-Semitic novel by Hermann Goedsche.

I understand that the latest Channel 4 movie on unbelievable, but true, cruel and ghastly Sri Lankan genocide scenes of Tamils (taken by Sri Lankan soldiers) during the war is coming soon.

Let it tear the masks of the embedded writers and analysts propping up the genocidal regime and its henchmen.

These are the barbarians and the state the writers want Tamils to reconcile with!

Better to perish than living under the jack boots of these barbarians.

This movie must be shown in Geneva in March 2014.

The will to be free is still burning bright with the Tamils of Sri Lanka.

Very true. The armed terrorists who operated in Sri Lanka were just one of the many heads of the LTTE beast. Just look at the sea of LTTE terrorist flags that shows up whenever there’s an anti Lankan protest by these so called “innocent” diaspora Tamils who “have nothing whatsoever to do with the LTTE” !

Thanks Thisaranee, Great stuff as usual!

Now, that the regime is crumbling with so many protests, from students to trade unions and Duminda Silva Gota’s Hand picked murderer who is Monitoring MP of MOD in retreat, Lalith Weeratunge, the CHAOS SPECIALIST par excellence will unleash CHAOS in Colombo and Lanka as he promised.
This is the meaning of Gota being with JHU’s Gamanpilla on the election platform for UPFA!

The Balu Sena and JHU’s Gamanpilla with Gota the Goon’s aid will attack minorities – Tamils, Muslims and Christians – and DIVIDE, DISTRACT and RULE the Sinhalaya Modayas! Just, Wait and see the coming CHAOS!

Palmsquirrell did you not see pictures of Tamil demonstrations in the West? They were carrying Tiger flags. Rajapakse may be trying to use fear of the LTTE for his own purposes but the irony is that they are alive and active. Some are making multiple posts on CT to advertise a forthcoming Channel 4 film.

Vellala CM of the NPC is diametrically opposite Ms T with regards to the Northern students.

CM says Diaspora money has put them on drugs, alcohol . smoking and sex.

Ms T tells her loyal followers, it is the poverty which is causing them to drop out.

Are they playing to two different galleries?.

If one compares Sri Lanka with other recent theaters of war, the achievements of the Sri Lankan government in demining, resettlement, infrastructure development and reconstruction in the North and East have been impressive. It is only 5 years since the end of a war that went on for three decades. The most important change in policy, in my opinion, has been largely ignored. This is the official promotion of trilingual education.

It appears true that Tamil children are more enthusiastic about learning Sinhalese than the reverse case. This is only an advantage to the Tamil children – an increasing number of whom are growing up in the increasingly multilingual Colombo. If this trend continues, true reconciliation will occur within a generation or less (a short period of time in the bigger scheme of things).

The “bogeyman” of the LTTE is, unfortunately for Tamil people, being kept alive by certain members of the diaspora that are trying to build ongoing hero-worship for the LTTE and Prabakaran, celebrating “martyrs” (suicide bombers) and urging Tamil people to keep “struggling” for a separate state. It is easy enough to find evidence of this campaign on the Internet. This continued effort to keep the Eelam dream alive is harming the interests of all the people in Sri Lanka and causing needless division among the Sri Lankans who have left the country. It also plays into the hands of those who would like to see more militarization in Sri Lanka rather than less.

            PointMan,

There is a great deal of stuff on the internet, including videos from the guy himself, as well as his slanders against his father, whom I once met in the US, that will show what I am talking about. Some of it was right here on CT at different times. All of that puts context to why he ‘sees’ only certain things selectively. So you can jump up and down, but I will stand by what I said. Go ahead and sue me, little boy, and check your own ethics first before you think you can pontificate to me.

Let us be decent about Romesh. In signing with both his father’s and mother’s surnames he signals he is proud to be both. This is a fine gesture aimed at reconciliation and should be encouraged.
I do not agree with some of Romesh’s views but he must be allowed

            Kettikaran,

I know who you are (i.e.,your other aliases) and I don’t have anything against you, or even against Romesh. But you have to reconcile the fact Brian himself is a decent man; actually because of his conscience he sometimes goes a bit overboard in supporting the Tamil cause and may sound like he is in the extremist camp; I don’t agree with some of his positions; I would personally go with the positions articulated by Sampanthan, Sumanthiran and Wigneswaran. But Brian is fundamentally a decent man and you have to reconcile that fact with what his son, who also otherwise seems decent, says against his father. I had/have no intention–nor do I have the power–of keeping him out of CT.

      Dr Romesh Senewiratne-Alagaratnam

“If this trend continues, true reconciliation will occur within a generation or less (a short period of time in the bigger scheme of things).”

      This is your assumption.
Reconciliation is two way process. First you better ask the Tamils what they want.

Learning languages should be voluntary. If Sinhalese are reluctant to learn Tamil and English what does it indicate to you?

” It also plays into the hands of those who would like to see more militarization in Sri Lanka rather than less.”

Militarisation in this island didn’t statrt with LTTE and will not end in the near future. The perceived bogey man VP and potential reemergence of LTTE is needed by the regime to check the southern rebellion real or imagined. Fortification of this island brings in much “needed” commission for the clan in defense procurement and other contracts.

Any sensible person would think in terms of good governance, accountability, transparency, dignity of the people, justice and rule of law, devolution power to all people, need to restore democracy ……. and everything good about truly democratic state rather than dwelling on diaspora hate campaign.

Diaspora has a constructive role to play. The state has a responsibility to create conditions that would bring in much needed investment, skills, technology and the rest of it.

At present all investments need clan’s approval. Prominent members of clan charge 10 to 15% commission and demand substantial share in the investment for free. Once the investment start bearing return the original investors are force out of the entire project.

What is the guarantee the investment is safe when the next riots take place in the future?

I agree with you, Native Vedda. The militarization of Sri Lanka began before the Second World War and during it, when Trincomalee was an important naval base for the British. An ongoing battle for Trincomalee was at the root of the war, especially back in the 1980s. The LTTE provided a justification to sell more weapons and military hardware and training to the Sri Lankan government. The motive to sell weapons by the USA, UK, China, Pakistan, Russia etc is an important force in militarization around the world, including in Sri Lanka.

I also agree with what you say about what good governance involves and I am not an admirer of the Sri Lankan government when it comes to problems of nepotism and corruption. These are problems in Australia too, and in the USA (George Bush senior and junior, for example). The point I am making is that continued demands for a separate state depicted on maps as including two thirds of Sri Lanka’s coastline is both unrealistic and unfair. It does not have the support of other nations and for a good reason. It is a very greedy land claim by a small minority of wealthy Tamils. These people were prepared to sacrifice young Tamil people from the villages in the North and East to fight an unwinnable war.

Regarding the reluctance of Singhalese to learn Tamil (or English), that is a problem for the Singhalese. Learning languages should be voluntary, and every language learned is an advantage in a holistic education. If parents encourage their children to be multilingual is good for the child and good for the country. By the way, I regard myself as being Tamil as much as I regard myself as Singhalese – and am belatedly trying to learn more of these beautiful languages. Languages that I wasn’t taught well as a child (since I studied in the English medium when we lived in Sri Lanka).

          Dr,

“The point I am making is that continued demands for a separate state depicted on maps as including two thirds of Sri Lanka’s coastline is both unrealistic and unfair.”

Pardon my ignorance; what relevance that the above statement of yours has with the article of TG? Has she mentioned about it or in any way supported such an idea? What make you say such a think when TG purely analysing the corrupt regime?

“These are problems in Australia too, and in the USA (George Bush senior and junior, for example).”

What are you exactly trying to say here? So according to you Australia is infested with corruption and nepotism on par with Sri Lanka, right? Can you give me examples of such instances and how they panned out in terms of free press and judiciary?

I like to know in terms of why you made such statements on this forum.

” an increasing number of whom are growing up in the increasingly multilingual Colombo. If this trend continues, true reconciliation will occur within a generation or less (a short period of time in the bigger scheme of things).”

What a desperate statement from this bankrupt Dr! Do you understand anything at all about the Tamil grievances? You need to be intellectually honest first and foremost in order to comment on TG’s article. In fact this article has scared the hell out of you; you have no basis to refute it thus coming up with meaningless utterances. Wake up Dr and be honest and do some good for a change than endeavouring to protect the Sinhala Buddhist hegemonic rule!

You have a long way to talk about reconciliation; first step to escape from the clutches of the Sinhala Buddhist chauvinism; second step is to objectively study what is good for the country; third step is to respect diversity and languages. Then you will be in a position to comment on this article!

The ‘war victory cow’ has been milked dry by this government. It cannot yield any milk anymore, however much the government may try. Unfortunately for this government the dry cow is also not pregnant and cannot be expected to calve and produce milk anew anytime soon. ‘ External intrigue against this nation’s sovereignty ‘ is the new cow this government is trying to milk. The ‘ War victory cow’ was a high producing Holstein, while the ‘External intrigue cow’ is a low yielding indigenous ( ‘ Sinhala ‘ breed ) cow that cannot also be milked for long! The people have been brought to a point, where they will not believe anything this government says. Repeated lying and disingenuous acts of this government, have touched a raw nerve in the national psyche, after a long incubation period.

The recent incident in Wanathamulla, where Duminda Silva- the darling of this government- was chased away by the public with stones, bottles and slippers aimed at him, despite heavy police presence, has a message for this government. The worm has turned. Public opinion has found its voice. The Jaffna mother who had the courage to retort at the inane question the Chairman of the Commission inquiring into the issue of the war missing, asked, also epitomises the times. The time to reap the whirlwind seems to be very near. No amount of lobbying in Washington, can reverse the political Tsunami that is imminent here in Sri Lanka.

Tisaranee wants to punish the political leadership and also the country as a result, for eliminating the LTTE but now is asking whether tigers are still burning bright. What hypocrisy! Of course those who backed the tigers either directly or through proxies will not rest until we are punished.

What a sad story…. These three brothers letting down the people of SL in front of the whole world..
All 3 Rajapakse brothers struggled a lot to get through their year 10, GCE O/L exam , but they are ruling a nation of Guppies (fish which follow the one swim ahead).. So these 3 fools think they can suck the rest of the world so easily as they do back in SL..

Ever since LTTE faced imminent defeat, this woman has been predicting many prophecies but none has come true. When our forces surrounded Kilinochchi, she wrote that LTTE would never let its administrative capital to be overrun. She wrote, our army would face the same fate as the German army in Stalingrad in WW11. When LTTE was finally cornered to Mulathivu, stupid woman wrote LTTE would fight a guerrilla war from its jungles for years to come. Now she says Tiger is thriving.

Thisaranee has been a full time traitor. For this woman terrorists are freedom fighters and anti-terrorists as extremists. No wonder she has been colluding with the war mongering neo colonialists who had killed at least million Iraqis with false pretences to fix our war heroes.

      Maniac,

What happened yesterday at Wanathamulla? The Police had gone and picked a person who has been against Gota led UDA taking over their land. There has been unrest and Dumiya had assured Gota that he would settle it for him. But when Duniya went the crowd had set upon him that he had to make a hasty retreat with his security. Thereafter the crowd demonstration had spilled to the Baseline Road which was closed for two hours for traffic. We will see for how long Gota can intimidate the Public with his Army?

All unhygienic filthy joints occupied by squatter families in Wanathamulla and the like areas is an eyesore to the budding city of Colombo. Worse, all such areas are infested with drug addicts, dealers and criminal elements. Only those with ulterior motive like thadi Karunanayake would say those joints should be left untouched. The plan that Gota has come up to clear shanties was in the cards for a long time. But it couldn’t have been implemented for no previous government had the right personality to administer it or for the lack of finances or both because new buildings have to be built and those that are to be displaced have to be given reasonable alternative accommodation.

Sometime back, Gaminiya’s Gal club buddy Man-Gala tried to do the job. Indeed he started the job by removing illegal roadside joints that were blocking pavements and roofs that were dangerously lean to pavements. When squatters and their sympathisers objected as in this instant, ManGala started the job from Matara. But he couldn’t continue for he was either incapable or regime of the bandit queen never had the money. This time however, in spite of cries by opportunistic wolves, the job of clearing shanties is proceeding and we shall see the end of this eyesore and as the President said the other day, all shanty dwellers will have better accommodation soon. Needless to say kudu dealers and their customers do not like it.

Now this is all an anathema for some but the caravan will move forward. So you stay put in your cold damp basement gaminiya. Adios!

The stupid regime is in the view that the drama played out for the local consumption will be bought in the international front also.

The regimes smart asses have a brilliant idea, for international consumption they will use LTTE for local general public it’s Geneva (and electric chair – many would have already made up their voting mind “aney ape raja thuma ta aphasa korannda denne naha api”).

What they fail to realize is the international actors are not fooled as the locals. But the locals are fooled so much so the regime is under the illusion the international players will also be fooled at some point of the time.

It’s our own mistake no matter what, the majority of the SL kan public keep voting these corrupt politicos. Because we are all mostly racists people.

What if Prabhakaran is reborn as one of the Rajapakse family members, and destroys the clan from within! That would be the ideal Karma.

    TG:

Why do we need so many power centres, Sri Lanka is still developing, population is just 22 million or so, and the area is about sq. Km 65000.

So many power centres mean we need money to maintain these centres and there will be frictions among power centres.

Why do we need so many power centres ?

Rajapakse is not a good leader, but who is the better choice ?

A comment from Dr Alagaratnam is very important and relevant to Ms T’s spiel.

He says “Diaspora is paying homage to Martyrs (Suicide Bombers ) and cultivating hero worship of the LTTE and Prabakaran , to create “separation” of Tamils from the rest in Srilanka”

Shouldn’t Ms T write a piece on this and show the Tamil inhabitants in Srilanka how this Diaspora agenda is going to benefit them?.

What price they have to pay to achieve this separation in the near , medium and long term?.

Or are the Diaspora and their current Champions Cameron. Obama , Harper and Pillai going to deliver it on a plate?.

What do you expect from a “Tear Taster” when he is placed in charge of combating the “Strong Lobbying” force of the LTTE Diaspora.? In that context we lost both a “Tea Taster” and a grand opportunity to place a “competent” Diplomat in a country that goes against us all the time due to the “strong” competencies of the LTTE Diaspora that took advantage of our weaknesses.

“This situation is being aggravated by an acute lack of job opportunities and a rising cost of living.”

Whatever happened to those sunshine stories 2-3 years ago where the
regime boasted leading Garment-export factories in the South have
opened several factories in the North to provide much employment
and badly-needed economic opportunities to the Tamil people. Nothing further was heard except the threat by Basil R – a few days prior to NPC election day they will dry funds to the NPC if people do not vote for them. Under civilised and functional governance this constitutes an election offence.

Will someone clarify if there have been any large factories or significant economic activity in the NP that have produced substantial employment to the Tamil people of the area. The only one we have heard of is the Nestle effort to increase milk production in the area.

No factories in the North to benefit Tamil people in that area. Whatever built is for the benefit of families of the armed forces.

Tku, Dr. RN. You serve a very useful purpose in these columns.
It is strange that economist (Saravanamuttu??) who runs a Chamber of Commerce, purportedly in the North, did not know much about this. He has a role to play in countering the State’s suspect economic figures – where necessary. He should keep the people informed of significant economic investments in the North – both public and private. Some of his data and figures have been interesting.

The dead ‘tiger’ is being resurrected by the government to counter the truth of the misery being foisted on the people.
The evidence being led before the “truth commission” is astounding, shocking and extremely credible – most of it will surely be hidden in the final report – if there is any “report” at all, like all other commissions.
The most shocking revealation is that families who came to give firsthand credible evidence of ‘disappearance’ of loved ones after arrests at the end of the war,are being ‘silenced’ by ‘gifts’ of Rs, 100,000 plus a “death certificate”!!!
We have the very first army in history which ‘certifies’ deaths at its own hands!!!
