Time for Foresight, Not Folly: Reflections On Minister Handunneththi’s WEF Appearance

By Roshan Pussewela

There has been an overwhelming reaction among Sri Lankans, both at home and abroad, about Minister Sunil Handunneththi’s recent appearance at the World Economic Forum (WEF). Sadly, much of it has been negative, and rightly so. What should have been an opportunity to present Sri Lanka’s case to the world became, instead, an embarrassing episode, largely due to the Minister’s inability to communicate effectively in English, the language in which the panel discussion was conducted.

Let me be clear: I do not believe fluency in English or any foreign language, for that matter—is a prerequisite for leadership or intellect. But in international forums like the WEF, language matters not for prestige, but for precision. If you are representing your country in a high-level socio-economic and political discussion, you must be able to clearly convey your government’s point of view, respond to challenging questions, and engage your audience with clarity and confidence. If that is not possible, the wise and dignified route is to use an interpreter.

What we saw, instead, was not just awkward. It was harmful. The Minister came across as unprepared and incoherent. This doesn’t reflect just on him, it reflects on Sri Lanka. It tells investors, policymakers, and international observers that we are not serious players. This is not a personal criticism; this is a national concern.

And that brings me to a deeper issue: participation at such international events must be strategic, not symbolic. Sri Lanka is in the throes of an unprecedented economic crisis. We cannot afford government vanity projects or half-hearted participation in global talk shops. We must attend only if we have something meaningful to gain and if we are prepared to make our case persuasively. If not, we are simply wasting public money, at a time when every rupee must be accounted for.

One of the key promises this government made was to put an end to waste, to stop the rot of showmanship and incompetence, and to act with purpose. This was a chance to walk that talk. Instead, what we witnessed was an entirely avoidable blunder, one that could have been prevented with a bit of humility, preparation, and foresight.

Let me also say this: I have been a vocal supporter of this government. I believed, and still believe, that they represent the only serious attempt in recent times to break the stranglehold of corruption and hold accountable those who looted this nation. I am not abandoning that belief. But support does not mean silence. If we are to truly rebuild this country, we must be willing to call out missteps and demand better from those we trust.

Finally, while this particular incident deserves scrutiny, it also opens the door to a broader discussion about Sri Lanka’s engagement with institutions like the WEF. I, for one, strongly believe that the WEF does not represent the interests of countries like ours. Its agenda is shaped by powerful corporate and geopolitical interests that rarely align with the wellbeing of struggling nations. That, however, is a debate for another time.

For now, let this be a moment of reflection, not just for Minister Handunneththi, but for the entire government. Let us stop chasing optics and start focusing on outcomes. Let us show the world, not through slogans but through substance, that Sri Lanka is serious, strategic, and self-aware.

This arrogance and misdirection is the significant cause of the decline of our – ‘Sri Lankan’ – INTELLECT, KNOWLEDGE, SIGNIFICANCE and DISPOSITION as an ELITIST WORLD SOCIETY, by and through Inadvertency, by politically supporting and continued to RE-ELECT those who held views inadequately enabled due to systemic Governance bordering on “TOM FOOLERY”!!?

The problem is that Handunnetti couldn’t understand the question, plus he was sorely lacking in basic general knowledge about the region. For example, he classed Japan as “an emerging economy”. Just compare him to the other participants:
    Indonesia:

    Singapore, Philippines, Thailand:

Was it really essential to send Handunnetti there? Did he go there for the perks? If the government was serious, it could have sent Chaturanga Abeysinghe .

      My dear OC,
Could that have been prevented,, had Handunetti been offered a “interpreter”? Answer is big “no”.

To the best of my knowledge, Handunetti has been making exaggerated, untrue, and false claims in public (in Sinhala).

Whatever it is, his public and parliamentary speeches are rife with outright fabrications and hyperbole.

The first thing he says in parliament upon his return for the WEF, is about their vain boasts.

You experts, should we be forced to deal with “incompetent ministers (Samanth Vidayaratne, Mahinda Jayasinha, Nalin Hewage, and the like)” and other officials if we truly want to change?

With the enormous mandate that they have been given today, why are the current leaders unable to make the necessary changes? I’m at a loss for words. How about you?

Thanks for the article. Before going to read it completely, I thought of sending a short message below. Let me also share you what Prof. Dewasiri got to say about the entire situation today.

I believe that having competent advisors in the government is both recommended and required.
Every government must rely on them. We can learn it from India.
The entire world realized that the candidate, who participated in the recent WORLD ECONOMIC FORUM session in China, was caught in a critical economic situation and was unable to express the message that Sri Lanka should convey in such a forum today. Regretfully, the government ignores the seriousness of Minister Sunil Handunetti’s gaffe and permits him to boast about his parliamentary speeches upon his return. He or someone similar would have been forced to sigh in a more progressive world because they had not completed the tasks correctly. Sunil Handunetti, on the other hand, has been inciting others by not sticking to the facts.

The majority of his explanations are untrue, even if he uses SINHALA languages. I don’t need to go into detail about all of the examples of his public statements here.

Dear Rational THinkers over to you@

Let’s stop surviving on relatively easy tides; enough is enough.

Sirisena was elected president from 2015 to 2019, but despite his fifty years of experience in local politics, he was not entirely capable of carrying out his duties.

Sri Lanka became “a bankrupted state” after the election of GOTABAYA in July 2022. He was a survivor of the US refuge and had no other qualifications except for his brother, a former preisdent.

    July 2022–21 September 2024: 26 months of subpar governance that actually prevented the country from plunging further but saved it from the actual threat; instead, he was ousted and sent home;

as of 21 September 2024, those who litter while sitting on village CULVERTs (doing nothing for own living, but parsiting on others) are now in power. – We have been experiencing “faux pas” as a result of their inability to govern

Alas, whata nation, what a country ? Amen !

“The Minister came across as unprepared and incoherent. “
That has little to do with skills in English.
Was t not possible to have a translator to assist? I am sure that it would have been allowed if requested.
The JVP has a poor department of global affairs and economic theory, not just Marxist.

The current cabinet lacks any powerful ministers, including Handunetti.
Within their party organization, they are becoming increasingly isolated. The health minister’s only role is to support the LG poll and chairman-election processes. In hospitals, patients suffer. According to a friend, certain Kalutara hospitals lack water motors due to financial constraints. During his brief 26-month presidency, Ranil appointed capable cabinet ministers who, based on their qualifications and actions, sounded like ministers. Harin, Shehan, Alisabry, Siyabalapitiya, Manusha, and many others seemed far smarter than the ministers we see today under AKD leadership.

People,…….he was asked about the effects of US tariffs placed upon our country and region. He spoke about the emergence of the Asian region, and of the great skill and work ethics of our Sri Lankan people who could contribute further towards this economic emergence. He spoke about the need of the region to bind together. What he said was implied towards those US tariffs, and thus he gave a holistic and more encouraging viewpoint.

He spoke very diplomatically without blame or demeaning of our country and previous governments, and did not criticize the US policy on tariffs. He spoke about the potential of our people, our geopolitical advantage, and the beauty of our country. With all the positivity he highlighted, he then encouraged investments into our land. All in all, it was a very dignified presentation, and one that we should be proud of.

      RTF,
      .
“He spoke very diplomatically without blame or demeaning of our country and previous governments, and did not criticize the US policy on tariffs.”

Have you completely lost your medication or are you just sitting on your little head? Why in the world do you keep lying about that? The penelist continued talking as our biblical parrot “DavidTheGood” usually does, despite not even understanding the moderator’s question.

I believed that responding with “malle pol” was a grave mistake or illness. In any case, you see it in the victim’s favour.

In addition, what actions did the Lanken minister take to promote investment?

When he returned home, what did he bring with him? In the past, JVPs strongly believed that leaders and ministers should bring investments when they travelled abroad. How much money did the current leadership bring in so far? Nothing, say experts.
