Time Is Ripe To End Ancient Hatreds

By Jehan Perera

The arrest of parliamentarian and leader of the Tamil National People’s Front Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam would be yet another incident that feeds into the sense of unequal treatment of individuals and communities in the country.  It also highlights two areas of particular concern. The first is the high level of surveillance that continues in the former war zones of the north and east. The visitors to those parts of the country would not fail to see the large presence of uniformed personnel in these two provinces, even at tourist sites. They remain as a visible reminder of the unsettled and violent conditions that prevailed since the late 1970s and which ended in May 2009. The failure on the part of the country to overcome the legacy of its violent past despite the passage of 14 eventful years is epitomized by the large spending still taking place on the security forces even in the midst of the general economic collapse.

The latest update by Verite Research has shown that according to the 2023 budget estimates, of the total state salaries, the defense sector claims 48 percent. The military takes up 32 percent of the total payroll expenditure and 16 percent goes for other defense services. According to World Bank (WB) data, the size of Sri Lanka’s armed forces was at its highest between 2017 and 2019 with 317,000 personnel. According to a publication by the Institute of South Asian Studies (ISAS), 2021, Sri Lanka’s military force is the 17th highest in the world, exceeding even that of the United Kingdom. The largest contingents of the military would continue to be deployed in the north and east which provides a fertile ground for anti-government sentiment.

One of the strong public sentiments in the north and east is that the security forces are involved in various schemes of undermine the Tamil people, including through being supportive of land grabs and encouraging drug addiction in youth. When only limited goods were shipped to the north in the past there were no scarcity of arrack as it was always shipped, which also speaks for the morality of the state. The same goes for the high numbers of taverns in the estate sector, which is evidence of systematic suppression through inebriation. The problem of high levels of drug addiction and criminality are, however, are also to be found in other parts of the country, including the capital city of Colombo. Unlike in the north and east, the root of suspicion in the south of the country is that the main problem lies in the venality of all-powerful politicians who may be using the security forces as their tools. It was this sentiment that popularized the widely used slogan during the time of the Aragalaya that all 225 in parliament should go.

Countrywide Surveillance

The incident involving parliamentarian Ponnambalam centres around the issue of surveillance in the north. According the parliamentarian, he was having a meeting with some of his constituents from a sports club numbering about 20 in a public park. When he was talking to them, two unknown men on a motorbike had come, stopped their vehicle 10-15 feet away and, when challenged, declined to provide their identity cards. It later transpired that these were plainclothes policemen who had come to collect intelligence for their reporting purposes. This is a common occurrence in the north and east, but also takes place in other parts of the country as well, much to the discomfort of participants at those events.

Sri Lanka is unfortunately today a post-war country that has still failed to find a political solution to the war that would address the roots of the conflict. It is also a post-Aragalaya society in which the economy has collapsed and continues to slow down, imposing immense hardships on the general population. Making matters worse is the government’s refusal to conduct elections that would permit the people to express themselves and what they want from their rulers. In these circumstances, surveillance in the north and east also exists in other parts of the country to ensure early warning to the government of potential points of unrest. The difference is that it is more blatant and overt in the north and east. It is unlikely that police intelligence officers would come roaring on their motorbikes to within 10-15 feet of parliamentarians in the south addressing their constituents to eavesdrop on their conversations.

The second issue that arises from parliamentarian Ponnambalam’s arrest was the lack of deference shown to him as an elected member of parliament. It confirms to the Tamil people that the security forces in the north and east are acting like an “army of occupation.” The incident itself took place in the north where the police wanted him to come and make a statement at the police station. He did not wish to do so on account of his concern that the environment in the police station would be hostile to him, as he had alleged that a gun had been taken out during the altercation in the park. The police had thereafter come to Colombo to where the parliamentarian had returned home, arrested him and taken him all the way back to the north to make a statement and to produce him before the court. An invidious comparison could be drawn between the differential treatment meted out to other parliamentarians in the recent past who have not been treated in a comparably harsh manner by the police despite their provocations.

Equal Citizenship

The strong Tamil nationalist stances the TNPF leader has stood for, including having close links with more hardline sections of the Tamil Diaspora, has estranged him from the south and the Sinhalese polity. The Hindu newspaper reported, “Few MPs from the southern, Sinhala majority areas commented on the development.”  However, the manner in which parliamentarian Ponnambalam expressed himself in the Sinhala language at the point of being arrested was an indication of his commitment to fight for justice for the Tamil people in Sri Lanka. This should be encouraged and not suppressed. Jaffna parliamentarian from the Tamil National Alliance M.A. Sumanthiran said in a tweet: “Police insisting that @GGPonnambalam should go to #Maruthankerni today itself to make a statement or threatening to #arrest him is totally #illegal and violates his #privilege as an #MP. He is being prevented from attending the ongoing #Parliament sessions today. #repression.”

The solidarity that TNA spokesperson Sumanthiran showed to a rival Tamil parliamentarian is a positive development. There is a need for unity among Tamil political parties if they are to achieve a reasonable bargaining power in their negotiations with the government. Contradicting Tamil media reports that there had been relatively little support for parliamentarian Ponnambalam from his fellow parliamentarians was the response of Opposition leader Sajith Premadasa to the arrest. He said, “We have differences with the ideology and standpoints of MP Ponnambalam but he is entitled to be treated as any other MP in this House. He was taken into police custody today while he was on his way to attend Parliament. That is illegal as per the law. We urge the government to respect the law. This is an illegal arrest.”  The opposition leader demonstrated the spirit of national unity and equal citizenship that is necessary to make Sri Lanka the common home of all communities.

The present period in which President Ranil Wickremesinghe and Opposition leader Premadasa are at the helm of national affairs, though on the opposite sides of parliament, offers the best chance to correct the problems of the past as well as existing problems. With the next session of the UN Human Rights Council set to take place next week in Geneva, President Wickremesinghe summoned a meeting of senior state officials where they discussed a reconciliation action plan. The progress of initiatives within five key areas of legislation, institutional activities, land issues, prisoner release, and power decentralization were reviewed. So far little has happened on the ground though much has been said in words. The government needs to consider establishing an equality and pluralism commission in keeping with the 21st Amendment to ensure that there is equal treatment and non-discrimination in all walks of life.  Such an institutional arrangement can increase the trust between the state and the people, including on matters such as the Ponnambalam arrest.

Now, Jehan Perera is talking! He is making sense; he is talking sense.
I appreciate the fullness of the very first para.
I’ll make it a little more full!?
The unnecessary large spending on the security forces is a major cause of our deficit, the deficit of trust, I mean.

      Nathan,
“The unnecessary large spending on the security forces is a major cause of our deficit, the deficit of trust, I mean.”
The deficit is Monetary too!! Absolutely NO DOUBT about it!! Bankruptcy!
Why should the country of 20 Million (1/3rd that of The UK) and 1/50 the land mass of UK, raised (initially to fight terrorism) continue to MAINTAIN such expensive structure in Defence Forces (DF) 14 YEARS, after ELIMINATING terrorism in all its forms and the LTTE!!!???
No signs of TERRORISM since May 2009!!! Egoistic and Self-Serving!!??
Hard to imagine have 17th (read it somewhere) largest in the world!!??
Begging Bowl in one hand and 375,000 strong DF to protect Government Politicos!!!?

I wonder what the JVP has to say on the subject? Why does it keep quiet on land grabbing in the North? Over to those on this forum who seem to be in daily touch with the JVP.

“Why does it keep quiet on land grabbing in the North? “

        In East too.
JVP can not afford to antagonise its core Sinhala/Buddhist supporters and some of the Lumpenproletariat – (Lumpen socialists) and jeopardize its hope of winning(?) the next election.

There have been constant stream of stories about, naughty, bad, fascist, ….thugish saffronistas. Yet JVP is silent.

The land grabbing saffronistas always invite senior Army commanders/officers to do the rituals at Buddhist temples. It does not matter if the chief guest is a civilian or military man/women as long as he/she does not wear the uniform and accessories (lanyard, brass rank badge, collar badge, …. etc). Vihares are supposed to be a place where people come to worship, and expect to have purity and serenity.

People are expected to wear white clothes not service personnel uniform.

        What a double standard.

You have caught on to a relatively minor issue …….. and beating it to death. While trying to protect Ranil and his loathsome/despicable band of crooks/humbugs. I don’t know what has got into you ………. you are better than this Native!

Read Lasantha Pethiyagoda’s comment below. That’s the truth. No one can wiggle out of facing the truth …….. by resorting to bullshit.

The minor functionaries of the government who have to carry out the orders of the pols …………. in order to keep their jobs ………. are not the main villains here.

Those civility related matters – wearing white as sign of Purity – are reserved and only applicable to “The Dalada”!!?

Jehan, now that enough is heard and seen, it’s time for SB to stop their BS. Rajapaksas went after Tamils and then Muslims. Now the strategy is to refocus again on Tamils. Jerome / Natasha are just side shows believing they still can take the world “for a ride”. An unidentified thug pulls out a gun and Tiran says “police is doing their job “. One of the masterminds Pissu Sira came out of hibernation swinging his rusted sword , saying ” we need to shut those people who talk bad about Buddhism, this is not politics ( very funny)”. The speaker as expected pretended naive saying ” MP’s don’t have special privileges”. SLPP goons did what they were told screaming ” kottiya , kottiya” inside parliament. Mahinda miraculously transformed overnight to Dalai Lama, “I’m for peace, I want Tamil politicians to workout reconciliation with Ranil govt”. While public is busy discussing system / systemic changes, DR / DDR , blah blah , blah, SB Lanka continues with it’s own agenda.

Political Cardinal Ranjith says masterminds of Easter Mayhem are still inside parliament. Meantime after Ranil’s firing of archaeological fraudster, covert SB racists are gradually turning overt and rabid. Sarath . W threatened Tamil MP’s with PTA. Pissu Sira, Jayantha Samarawera, Sarath .F, Kommanappillay ……. elbowing each other to show their colors. Waiting for Prelates / Theras and rest of those Pseudo Buddhist / Patriots ………… to join the party. Rajapaksas are back to their old games. Sorry Jehan time is never ripe in Sorry Lanka.

“another incident that feeds into the sense of unequal treatment of individuals and communities in the country. “
The Jaffna library was burnt in 1981 where the police was part of this incidence and now still that has not changed even in 2023. This highlights that Sri Lanka will never change its brutality against Tamils . Not only police, the whole set of institutions and the Buddhist Sinhala people are behind this brutality. This proves that Buddhism did not help to enlighten Buddhist Sinhala people in this country. Some may argue that not all Buddhists Sinhala or Buddhist Sinhala Priests are not supportive to this agenda but the truth is that majority of them are supportive of that agenda.

      Dear Logical Thinkers,
I had this dream last night after carefully reading some of the comments circulating on CT these days.
It is getting closer to the day of my departure to the motherland. Various thoughts come to my mind. I sometimes feel that I will be shot dead in the street. Old codger would say, nothing of the sort, but many coming from outside would be hypochondriacs.
      .
In a session where I invited various people in Colombo called “A Cup of Thanakola Soup Dansala at Galle face hotel” several top vocalists from CT were also invited. Among the guests were Sinhala Man (in his newly bought AKD Saranang Gachchami logo t-shirt), Ramona (seen herself eating some caviar, wearing markeklamoten´, brought to the meeting), Simon (saw also wearing a JVP logo t-shirt). Human Touch, NV, Old codger and Manel Fonseka were present. As usual, MF was quiet and the most essentials were focused.

Most of the guests couldn’t hold back any longer, so as usual my lovely sister Manel came up with creative ideas. There are few peacemakers among the people today. NV tried hard to balance the situation, however it ended up the same way, anything and everything in the nation was in vain. One shouted, that is our culture in Sri Lanka. They never agree on national issues.

Dividing the audience as usual, the Sinhala man (NIC hunter of the current era) started hero worshiping AKD as no one else was given time to share their heart. Whatever he started was based on AKD and his family and his education.
        .
The ardent JVP supporters in the meeting repeatedly forgot a single question about how AKD will prosper the nation with his “Miracle Lamp of Aladdin”

Not knowing what SM aka our SELF PROCLAIMED FORMER ISKOLEMAHATHTHAYA was talking about, starting with his family and then his experiences in OMAN and the MALDIVES, the small audience had NO CHOICE but to suffer from headaches.

OC, HT, NV, MF were neutral like always but others accused them of being pro- Ranil as if they were loyal to him.

The session ended to the same nature for Sri Lankan expatriates I know in Europe, unfortunately, not with peace of mind. However, none of them were injured.

Psychiatrists and psychologist waited outside the hotel and finally caught the Sinhalese man and took him for treatment.

And LM, myself was caught by execution branch of JVP/NPP to kill me in public. All sinhal filthy were thrown at me.
MF, HT, OC and few others ended the session sadly. They look stand still. RAMONA was still busy with eating her Cavier plate. … alas, what a tragedy.

This was in my dream- may be my undermind is so fed up of srilanken situation today. That may be the reason me to have dreamt of it that way.
          .

And you know who could be behind it – none other than Medamulana BP.

Now things get worse if law and order catches up with them, they fear any kind of “real change”. I think we should support any sort of Singapore-style law and order setting, and then only can BP of all kinds be ostracized like breadcrumbs.

The magnitude of the damage done by Medamulana-crimes by twisting stupid people s minds to their fortunes is beyond estimation. , what they have done and are doing, is also beyond all ethics and morals. However, the Sri Lankan media is completely controlled by the laptop enjoyed by former media whores and racists, so it reads as softer than it looks.

I do not respect karma or divine forces today, because even though innocent people died due to Covid-19, not a single person in the Rajapaksa circle was punished. why ?

“The government needs to consider establishing an equality and pluralism commission in keeping with the 21st Amendment to ensure that there is equal treatment and non-discrimination in all walks of life. Such an institutional arrangement can increase the trust between the state and the people, including on matters such as the Ponnambalam arrest.”

If Russia continues to teach the lesson to Germany that what a true democracy is, then the EU will tighten its budgets spending on bogus preachers like Jehan PhD. This is the guy who threatened the UOJ kids that if they did not attend the Buddhism conversion seminars, he was conducting with EU money, they would know what can happen to them while he was using the Rapist Army to organize those meetings. That is a well calculated escape route at the most crucial time for Sinhala Buddhist Appe Aanduwa. Come on Jehan PhD, didn’t you go to Geneva on the ticket of Evil’s Yahapalanaya Aanduwa to have the Resolution 30/1 annulled?

  • 13
    2

Our PhD thought the White Flag Murderer, New King, getting help from Lord Nesby will bring justice for the Tamils Genocide War victims, instead of implementing the Resolution 30/1. The mass murderer Logan Ratwatte is in Parliament. Who carried gun into Prision to shoot Tamils arrestees. Mervyn who tied a Muslim Reporter to a tree to beat is not asked any question. Jehan the PhD the “Koli Thinda Kallanar Kooda Nindu Thedurar”. Jehan PhD wants to have the “high Criminal Ponnambalam” be excused in the name unity between races. When Younger Son Prince and Old Beauty were about to be investigated in Yahapalanaya, for the murder of Tajudeen, the magnificent Muslim rugby player, Old Rowdy King said it was he who saved Thulanjani from the Bank notes fraud by putting the bank clerk in, instead of her. Sinhala Buddhists’ draconian laws needed not to be extended a mile to give an extra inch of justice to Tamils, but stop all the pretentious, clownish talks and acts which (Ventha Punnilai Veal Paachchurathu) prick on the burned wound of Tamils with a spear, that will bring a tremendous relief for Tamils.

Nothing against Prof. Sunil Areratne, whose’s pride is his own research, but we do not want the Evil Emperor to rewrite the Mahavamsa in new ways so the Sinhala Buddhist tyrants can push their lives for another 1500 years on the throne of SinhaLE, the Wildlife Sanctuary, with new lies. It is only Sinhala Extremists and supporters are advocating “Sinhala Buddhism.” But Tamils do not talk of Hinduism. Tamils talk about their cultural and hereditary North East region, where a Tamil majority have been living in after the European invasion. Beyond that it was only Tamils, (eft alone the Vedas, who’s history has met no one’s interest to reconstruct) who were the only race lived in Ceylon and only their decedents are living in the European’s Ceylon with different identities, like Sinhalese, Muslims (excluded burgers and Malays).

  • 12

We have no woo or woe against The Evil Emperor for having proposed the “Buddhist Temple in Tamils’ area as Tamils.’ On the other side, we never went and claimed with 200 acres of land for the 1000nds local Tamils built Temples for Lord Muruga, Pathni Kanagi, Siva and Krishna which were built in the first millennium, in the South. There are some temples built with in last 300 years that are exclusively administered by mountain area worker communities. Those are maintained by those workers, mainly with the accent of Europeans at the start, then later, independently.

UNHRC is dodging the Genocide crime, to be soft on Old Rowdies while Shylock IMF is funding the Evil to keep the War Criminal in modern Palaces each with minimum of 200 Sinhala Rapist guards.

“Right after the release from Rapist police, Ponnampalam asked IC, “please get the UN to bring the investigation on Genocide crime, that will be the only justice that would bring any solution for Tamils’ oppression in their own land. That is what my arrest is telling IC”

  • 11

We do not want any new commissions. We do not want any new law or constitutional change. We do not want any referendum or repeal of 6th A. We have no special claims in the South, it will be then these changes will be required. We want the Genocide claim took place in our land investigated. Then we can restart our administration in our land.

This essay by Jehan reminds me of his writings in his salad days when he was associated with that champion of causes S.Nadesan.Q.C.
But the salient part of the episode relating to Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam has not been made explicit. Was this not an exercise of an attempted assassination?
It went awry due to the MPs alertness to challenge the plainclothes TAMIL Policeman who refused to show his identity card.

Time is ripe to end ancient hatreds ? Just like that on this clumsy effort to finish off a rising star of the Tamil Political firmament.

“ The largest contingents of the military would continue to be deployed in the north and east which provides a fertile ground for anti-government sentiment.“
It is NOT anti government sentiment but anti Sinhala sentiment.
After 75 years of domination and suppression the SL Tamils need a settlement that IS SUPERVISED by an International body. Tamils are willing to live in a united SL as long as they are allowed to live and run their lives freely in the North and East of SL.

What was sad was to see the Spokesperson for the Police telling lies to the media .. these were alternate truths and not what actually happened. Even this spokesperson did not realize that we citizens of the country saw clear video clips showing what actually transpired on that day. When we have such stupid senior police officers who are the spokesperson for the police how can the average citizen ever trust what the police say?

The author has shown how double standards exist in dealing with the same actions or behaviours of pro or anti regime persons. Criminals continue to rule in parliament, with an illegal alien a state minister, an extortionist minister, chain snatchers, heroin importers, large scale gold smugglers and illicit forest fellers and the like, deciding on the statutes of a legislative process. The president was a co-conspirator in the burning down of the Jaffna library, together with Gamini Dissanayake, Cyril Mathhew, Sarath Amunugama watching the burning, from Jaffna Inn across the road. None of them were charged with arson or destruction of national treasures. There can never be any real peace with 48% of the budget allocated for “defence” while thousands die every day from lack of basic medicines in hospitals. These are crimes against humanity and the perpetrators must be punished soon.

One way to resolve the ethnic issue, especially the Tamil Buddhist and Sinhala Buddhist issue is to hold an international conference on Buddhism in Sri Lanka inviting local and international experts on Buddhism in SL and its History to present their papers and discuss in detail. This conference should be jointly chaired by the Mahanayake Theros and the Hindu Priests. What this would do is open the eyes of the citizens in the country and at last, I am sure everyone will find that there is no conflict between Tamil Buddhists and Sinhala Buddhists and further it will be acknowledged that any nationality or Race can be a Buddhist is he or she wishes to be one.

I have never heard a Tamil rejecting Buddha, for that matter, no Buddhist rejects Hindu Gods. In most of the Buddhist temples, we see Hindu gods. Katharagama which use to be a Temple of Murugan became a Temple now run by Buddhists. So at the grass root level, there is no conflict. However, the conflict is in the minds of the politicians, and the racists on both sides.

“Making matters worse is the government’s refusal to conduct elections that would permit the people to express themselves and what they want from their rulers. “

is this a joke or something. Are we a democracy or not?How come the west which lashes counries that are not democracies like china etc don’t utter even a word when their favourites arein power. The west is full of double standards it seems. We should have the local governmet elections immediately.

“invidious comparison could be drawn between the differential treatment meted out to other parliamentarians in the recent past who have not been treated in a comparably harsh manner by the police despite their provocations. “

i think mr.ponnambalam though he is a courageous man just like his father should have acted with more dignity and patience when dealing with these kind of irritations conducted by the army and police. The video shows him behaving in a uncouth manner which is exactly what the people who do the surveilance want you to fall into thetrap they set. They should be just ignored as idiots.

“However, the manner in which parliamentarian Ponnambalam expressed himself in the Sinhala language at the point of being arrested was an indication of his commitment to fight for justice for the Tamil people in Sri Lanka. “

Are you mad jehan. Is this the way to fight for justice for the tamil people. When watching the video you see a person representing the tamils behaving like a uncultured person. Are we tamils uncultured? If you are a educated person you should have 3 assets to call oneself educated.1.knowledge 2. culture 3.wisdom.Just having one or two is not enough.then you are only semi educated.

There are other ways of fighting for the justice for the tamil people than to remove your trousers in public and become like the many sinhala street thugs who have been in our parliament.

“The police had thereafter come to Colombo to where the parliamentarian had returned home, arrested him and taken him all the way back to the north to make a statement and to produce him before the court”

on what charge was he arrested?A high handed act. If the courts find him not guilty he should file for a large compensation, then only the fellow who gave the order to arrest will be sacked.

      Shankar,
      “A high handed act.
If the courts find him not guilty he should FILE FOR A LARGE COMPENSATION, THEN ONLY THE FELLOW WHO GAVE THE ORDER TO ARREST WILL BE SACKED”
Very sacred views, agree with you!!
However knowing how the Governance in this pristine and resplendent land THRICE blessed, is not the simple way that Democracy and Rule of Law works in the west or developed nations!!??
Not denying our Nation is a developed country and ‘RULE(S) OF LAW’ TO AFFIRM THAT D E M O‘Cracy Prevails in Sri Lanka too!!?? But not the same!!!???
The Sri Lankan Rule(s) of Law permits the EXECUTIVE to pay the Compensation from the President’s Fund, than by the accused and reinstate the accused to elevated in Rank/Position!!?

      Shankar,
In the scenario detailed hereinbefore by me, the only LESSON anyone learns is principally confined to the electorate (Voters and Tax Payers), whose money is used to pay the compensation, depriving the PUBLIC of ‘VISTAS OF PROSPERITY AND SPLENDOUR’!!!!???
the alleged accused officer, instead of learning a lesson, is heading to the Bank, LAUGHING and expecting his higher remuneration as he has been ‘KICKED UPSTAIRS’, which he never expected or envisioned, if not for the CRIME committed on behalf of the STATE!!!???
This being the state of affairs, NO wonder ARAGALAYA demands SYSTEM CHANGE!!!???
FULLY AGREE this demand!!!??? Big question is WILL IT HAPPEN!!!???
