Translation Of Azath Salley’s Controversial Interview: “Muslims Will Also Take Up Arms”

On 20 April 2013, in an interview to the Tamil Nadu bi-weekly magazine “Junior Vikatan”, Azath Salley is alleged to have said that “the Muslims too should launch an armed struggle against the state in the same manner in which Tamils conducted a campaign earlier…(and) that such a struggle would commence once necessary arms are procured.” Salley has later written to the magazine stating that he was misquoted. The magazine published a correction on 4 May 2013.

Azath Salley

When Azath Salley was arrested on Thursday May 2nd the Media Centre for National Security (MCNS) Director General Lakshman Hulugalle said that Salley was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department following several complaints received by the CID regarding conduct which could damage ethnic harmony, and harm national unity. Hulugalle said that Salley was taken into custody under Section 120 of the Penal Code and provisions under the Prevention of Terrorism Act. Hulugalle reportedly stated that Salley had violated clause 21 of the Prevention of Terrorism Act and section 120 of the Penal Code. He (Salley) had incited people with the aim of causing damage to ethnic and religious harmony, in the guise of agitating against the government.

When Tamil National Alliance MP and Lawyer MA Sumanthiran visited him at ward 55 of the Colombo National hospital , Azath Salley told Sumanthiran that the Police so far had questioned him only about an interview he had given to the Tamil Nadu bi-weekly“Junior Vikatan”.

We publish below the translation of the said interview;

MUSLIMS WILL ALSO TAKE UP ARMS- SAYS AZAD SALLY

(Saturday, 20 April 2013, 06:50 AM GMT) (VIKETAN)

We met the participant at the seminar on  ‘The Right of Sri Lankan Tamils’ organized by the Popular Front of India, in Chennai.

Q:  There is news that attack against Muslims has started in Sri Lanka?

A:  The first attack in Sri Lanka was against Muslims in the riots of 1915 between Sinhalese and Muslims.

Recently in 2011, after the war with the Tigers, a Dharga in Anuradhapura was demolished  by Buddhist monks in the presence of the police.

In 2012 a mosque in Dambulla was demolished.  By demolishing over 10 mosques and madrasas, the Sinhalese have started attacking the Muslims openly.

No one pays any attention to the fact that soldiers are harassing Muslim women wearing the burqua.

Their intentions can be gauged from the statement of the Rajapakse-supporting Sinhala party, the Jathika Hela Urumaya, that a war like that of  1915 is unavoidable.

As a first step to this war, the issue of Halal certification has been banned in Sri Lanka.

If so, there will be no alternative to taking up arms.  For saying this, the The Bodu Bala Sena has said that I should be arrested.

Q:  What actions have you taken to ensure the safety of the Muslims?

A: When America brought forward the resolution on Sri Lanka, I submitted an appeal that the safety of the minority Tamils, Muslims and Christians should be also assured.

Further, we requested the Ambassadors of 24 countries, including those of 8 Muslim countries supportive of Sri Lanka and demanded that they speak on behalf of  the minorities.

We are trying to bring this issue to the attention of the world community.

Q:  There was information before that the Tamils and Muslims were alienated. How is the situation now?

A: The Muslims were driven out of the territory under Tiger control before. From then the Muslim organizations started to differ.  The Tigers should not have done that. If they had embraced the Muslims, the situation could have developed differently. Prabhaharan missed several opportunities.  This has been beneficial only to the Rajapaksa family.

Q:  The actions (activities) of Rajapaksa?

A:  His only proclamation is that he has won against the Tigers.   The Rajapaksa family which was without anything is today being transformed into the most prosperous family in Asia.

His relatives who were working abroad in super markets and petrol stations are ministers today.

They are travelling to neighbouring countries for discussions. They have captured the media.   Only the Rajapaksa family members are at the head of all governmental agencies.

Gotabaya is guiding the Bodu Bala Sena with the intention of taking the message amongst the Sinhala people that Rajapaksa is the only soldier (Hero) for the Sinhalese.

They think the Rajapaksa Senior is the president and Gotabaya, Basil and Namal are also presidents.  Confiscating people’s properties is Namal Rajapaksa’s occupation.

They divided various occupations among themselves: taking commissions on government tenders is Basil’s share and changing Sri Lanka into a Buddhist country is Gotabaya’s share.

It is on the basis of this confidence that he has changed the rule that one person can be president for only two terms, to that where  one can be president any number of times.

Presidential elections can be held now only once in four years, but the president is engaged in actions to make it possible to hold elections every three years.

Because his party has the majority now, he plans to hold the presidential election again, win and then conduct  the general elections.

However, Tamils and Muslims will not vote for Rajapaksa. He cannot win the confidence of these communities ever.

The reason as to WHY Azath Salley was taken into custody lies in the last Question and Salleys no-holds-barred answer to it. :)

      Fairose,

under another article on the same issue you advice the lankans to nip “everything what Asad Salley had said” in its bud because muslims have “Jihad is in their blood through doctrines”?

why don’t you pick a name that doesn’t sound like what Fairose sounds like?

would you like to fill some blanks in between…
“The first attack in Sri Lanka was against Muslims in the riots of 1915 between Sinhalese and Muslims.”

      and

Recently in 2011, after the war with the Tigers…?

Just to see if we both are reading the same thing in between the lines: things that could have gone lost in translation(or censored by a cessationist magazine?)

I do not agree with most of the things Salley has said. There are some factual errors and it is very shallow and juvenile as well. It’s nothing but a rambling by yet another politician. And it’s nothing more intense than what BBS thugs talk. Arresting him based on this half baked interview is a joke and it is very clear there’s something more than our eyes can meet. I will neither trust Salley nor the government on this issue (PS: I am yet to read the original Tamil version of the interview).

      Rifkha Roshanaara,

How about you lady make some note on teh veracity of the this published version the interview by vikatan and its validity considering azad salley’s tamil proficiency (consult youtube) and vikatan’s credibility (very well expressed in their own sites in numerous articles they published).

you maintain that azad salley is just another corrupt politician. maybe he is. but did you miss to hear him (search youtube) inviting investigations into his financial affairs by the state in his public press meetings? maybe that was a move he played with the govt, but he is open to investigations, right? just like fonseka is open to investigations?

why you don’t see the fact it was azad salley who faced the devil and was one of the first to make the rest of the muslims (on a larger scale) aware of those sinhala buddhists and priests and politicians who stood against racism? why don’t you see that the last time rauf hakim opened his mouth was after the results of the last presidential polls were released (maybe he made a few not so loud comments after his realizing of being an incapacitated minister of justice)?

in another place you say azath salley was never a protector of muslims. but when did muslims need a ‘protector’ as you say during azad salley’s political career before 2012? generalizing, muslims didn’t need this ‘protector’ that you suggest most of the time in between 1915 and 2012! and whenever there was need it was provided for by the constitution and the rights and ‘protection’ were assured by the well wishing people from the other races. and ashraff filled in some place where there was necessity.

practically, especially considering the existence of internet, it’s too stupid for anyone like salley (having been explictly expressed in all languages, public opponent of cessationist cause at least until April 20) to change his stance all of a sudden to sympathize for VP and to draw some empathy from a pro-cessationist magazine based in a foreign land.

hope that appeals to your conscience. btw, i’m not campaigning for salley’s (hardly possible) post-release political mission, i’m just being grateful to someone who put his personal and professional life at risk for a true cause while you and i didn’t have the means and the backbone that it takes.

sorry, i may have gone exaggerated about the necessity for the protection in between 1915 and 2012. yes, there were instances like the eviction from north and muthur and other (two-way) ethnic conflict situations. but you do know that azad salley when he launched his national political career (from being a colombo munipality politician) did raise his voice even for the ethnic tamils. even as of today the govt is yet to prove through the ordinary judicial system of azad salley’s corruptions, if any, while he is still an opposition – i read some others writing about complaints about him, but why then salley was the first to tell the public that gnanasara has hit and run case in public and that another top BBS has financial fraud proven in court? having accusations and being defamed and being proven guilty are not the same.

I have already expressed my views in detail about Salley’s Tamil language proficiency (I do not need youtubes for this btw) and Junior Vikatan’s pro-LTTE, pro-Eelam and Anti-Sri Lankan stance (I am quite aware of the standards of dailies and magazines that are published in TN). He should have used his brain before agreeing to give an interview to a magazine like Junior Vikatan. I dont remember calling him a corrupt politician but I definitely called him a bankrupt politician who just tried to make use of the opportunity for his resurrection. If he was in power it would have been a different story altogether. My comment that he was never a protector of Muslims, IIRC was a response to someone who called him a ‘protector of Muslims’ (or something in that context) and I still stand by my opinion.

Yes he was naive and stupid to have sympathized for VP and even to speak or suggest anything that’s related to taking up arms. That disqualifies him from everything, no matter he faced the devil or not, whether his intentions were genuine or not. I totally detest anyone who suggests violence as a solution to any problems. LTTE, or BBS or Azad Salley, I maintain the same stance when it comes to anything related to advocating violence.

Besides, the interview to JV sounds very juvenile to me with sweeping and generalized statements and false information and shallow understanding about the political dynamics of Tamils and Muslims and LTTE. Chances are high for JV to have twisted things that Salley said in his poor Tamil but that’s definitely not an excuse.

(PS: You sound quite familiar and wonder as to why you have to hide behind a fake handle ;) )

          Rifkha Roshanaara,

When I say salley risked his personal and professional lives i believe i supported my claims by stating facts. when you say that you are ultra-smart (to perform a psychoanalysis from his statements and past behavior) to conclude that salley was a bankrupt politician and that he wanted to capitalize on the situation, you have to support your claim instead of depriving a person of their due recognition and sympathy just because you want to say so. what else politicians are supposed to do if not to take stands for the matters of communal issues? to pave roads and administrate building constructions, like how democratic representation in legistlative system is understood in by most of the eastern provincers? that’s what we have a bureaucracy of the government for.

salley gave an interview to a third rate magazine in tamil nadu (without using his brain beforehand). interview published literally predicts worst-case scenarios. magazine gives it a title ‘muslims will take up arms’. GR arrests him under PTA. but it’s no excuse to say that vikatan is a stupid magazine and salley doesn’t deserve detention under PTA?

even i don’t take everything salley has to say verbatim (i just have respect for he having stood for what was right), i trust sumanthiran who stands for salley.

P.S.: I never met you in real life. i don’t even know you. just i have never met salley or sumanthiran. so if you suspect some real life person you know of to be of some secret admirer of yours not willing to contradict you with their real identity and to be a conformist of any sort, just set them free. i hide behind pseudonyms and onion routers because 1) i am just another insignificant citizen that doesn’t have authored books that could be sold here and 2) i am not interested being in picked up by a white van, now CID/TID vehicles officially.

about the P.S., yes im not an expert in psychoanalysis so i extrapolated the small clue in the PS into a special case. now it turns out i was wrong, so my apologies.

now that salley is back home, i can look at other stuff.
maybe MR played his pre-planned political move or it was a pressure on him because salley didn’t deserve PTA for a third rate magazine publishing a half-truth, which itself doesn’t suggest what a PTA detention would require.

hard to see how hard some peoples hearts have become in their reaction to somebody else’s problem.

              good day.

Further, you have only expressed your grievances regarding my P.S. and accused me of going wilder with my imagination. i apologize and in the mean time i request you see how wild that is compared to that of yours in general, looking at all your comments.

But am i to take your failure to respond to my request that you support your conclusion about salley, being a bankrupt politician, having tried to capitalize on the situation at hand, as a response by silence to mean that you are bankrupt of rationale and jumped into conclusion? before ever you answer me, i would like you also take a look at salley’s discussion/debate with BBS spokesperson in sinhala hosted by young asia television, now available for view from a public domain video sharing website called youtube.

Azath Salley is like a bull in a china shop. He thinks only after jhe speaks, but he is a person who has no malice against anyone. I have had the opportunity of being in his press conferences and always wondered when you would be sent the “white Van”. At least now, he is officially under custody. Let us agree to disagree and Azath as a politician is entitled to challenge his opponents.

The irony is that instead of the perpetrator, the victim is punished. The whole issue of religious hatred was fanned by the BBS. Since it was the darling of the government, particularly Gota it was appropriate for them to victimise the victims.Unless the majority of the population realise that they are playing with fire this issue is likely to snowball into a massive conflagration engulfing even the innocent sections of the majority population. I do hope they wake up from their sleep walk.

The Judiciary and the Police do NOT have the guts to stand up to the atrocities committed by BBS RIGHT UNDER THE NOSES OF THE POLICE. Well done Azad sallay, atleast we are proud that a Sri Lankan Muslim Politician had stood up for muslims.Unfortunately majority of the so called Muslim ministers are bumpsuckers with real thambi tricksters, most certainly.
Balu Sena and the buddhist monks can destroy muslims and christian place of worship, promote hate campaign, attack muslim establichments, interfere with muslim women dress code etc,and nothing happens. These are not things that brings disharmony amongst communities according to our stupid racist leaders.

Well the Defense Secretary has given sweeping powers to BBS, they can do what the JUDICIARY cannot do… They even have their backs covered by Gota and he is the one who has been feeding these thugs. NOW I come to think that the ” Grease Yakka’s ” are part and parcel of the BBS.. all fingers points to them.

They were the ones who caused havoc during the Muslim’s holy moth of Ramadan.. 2 years ago.. and now the BBS is openly doing what they have been doing in mufti…. The BBS made it impossible for female muslim worshippers to go for special night prayer for Muslims in the holy moth of Ramadan…

Not only Azath Salley but the whole world knows and talk very openly what these Rajapakses have done to our country. Rajapakses can do all the crimes but those who talk about those crimes are taken into custody. Even in the White Flag Case, it was one Rajapakse who gave orders to kill all the LTTE leaders who surrendered with white flags but the one who spoke about it to a reporter was jailed! In short Rajapakses are the criminals but if someone talks about these criminal activities, he/she is killed, threatened or jailed! What a lovely country!

      Dr.Rajasingham Narendran,

As i told you in a previous comment under Dr. Laksiri Fernando’s article, there doesn’t exist any publication of Ananda or Junior Vikatan on May 4, 2013. CT should take note of this too. There was no corrective statements published on that in any of their issues later than that.

You can go to vikatan’s site and confirm this. Maybe it appears in one of their other vikatan’s, there are too many of them! or in one of the junior vikatan’s issues later than April 28 in a small area of the print version that didn’t make it to their web edition.

Vikatan is a magazine of poor standards and as such i don’t believe they would make it a highlighted article when (ever) they would publish azad salley’s refusal.

my pseudonym is ‘tor client’ with a ‘t’ not ‘f’. thanks for remembering most of it anyway. btw, if you have problems accessing certain sites on the internet from SL (maybe CT on some days), then you can download this program called ‘tor client’ or ‘tor web browser’ which will provide you guidance as to how to make secure connections to such websites without being dropped by the govt. also that way the servers of the websites will not have your ip – they will have the ip of the tor bridge you are connecting through. just like proxies. it’s being used in many countries where censorship is a commonplace and technical skills of the govt is not as good as that of the chinese and iranians.

i was awaiting your comparison of vikatan’s standards to any decent journalism out there?

tor client is a rather better choice, because an isp can block or redirect connections to proxy sites even to check for what sites you are requesting! this is because proxy gateways are advertised ips. on the other hand, tor network is sort of community hosted and tor bridges can be created by one of your frined exclusively for you so that no one knows about you bypassing restrictions. the down side is tor network was once exposed by anonymous to have been exploited as darknet by child pornography distributers.

There is nothing here that justifies being arrested under PTA. This is similiar to the action against Tissanayagam. He is entitled to his views on the Rajapakse regime and has the courage to express them. This seems to have upset the Mafia and Godfather.

What the contents of this interview seem to warrant is a criminal defamation suit against Azad Sally by the Rajapakse family and not his detention under the PTA. However, this may open the Pandora’s box, as the accusations have to be justified with evidence by Azad Sally and contested once against with counter evidence by the family.

THis is very legal action that puts into action in any demicratic coutry. He is not the excecutive to skipp the police as he wish. If he was hiding from the police he must be jailed for that. This guy has thought he is above the law.
Likewise, I must say we are against all those Rajapaksa corrupters. They also will get punishment whenever a new government put into power. They must be punished for all those misconducts.
However, Zali must put in the jail for persuading people for terrorism.

What wrong Azath Salley did except to expose how Rajapakse crook family dictators run our country.

What happened to VP’s and nothern peoples over half ton Gold and lorry loads of Foreign and local currency looted by Maharaja……What happened……What Happened…..What Happened…..Come on we need answers.

    Please read the following web.

    lankaenews.com/English/news.php?id=13673

A full investigation on Rajapakse Family Corruption is necessary while public and media exposing these Rajapakse corruptions to thye public.

Also new ideas on information gathering and information and media technology should be used to obtain Rajapakse corruptions and publish them to public is a necessary.

Also until the authorities look into these corruptions it is necessary for a unified action plan to bring down the regime by peaceful means.

Constant protests, marches, strikes, agitations, conferences, educating public, media exposure, sathya grahas, fast unto death, road blocades, work stoppages, vigilante groups, mass protests, advertising and media coverage, parliament protests, urban and village counsil protests, Black fridays, shut down the parliament are few of them.

Remember collectively and by using various innovative stratgies we could bring down the corrupt regime. Go to internet and study.

This self-appointed leader of the muslims should never have sacrificed the interests of his community by stirring unwanted trouble just to gain political advantage. We have lived peacefully with the sinhalese people all these days and have no territorial or other ambitions that need us to take to arms. This is bad advise and this silly man has been correctly ignored by the majority of muslims.

I think it was good of M. A. Sumanthiran to see him, but there is little even a national statesman like Sumanthiran can do under the current regime in Sri Lanka. I think Rajapakse’s days are numbered anyway. His time has passed. The only way he will be able to keep power is through brutality. I hope that he will be pushed aside for a truly genuine statesman like Sumanthiran.

I think Rajapakses are trying hard to be a southern Prabhakaran for both Muslim and Sinhala communities.

Using young BBS to instigate violance against both Muslim and Sinhala communities are same as how Prabhakaran used tamil youth to create mayhem against Sinhala and Muslims.

What happened to VP and his LTTE gang in Nanthikandal will happen to BBS and the Rajapakses.

Sorry to see how Rajapakse crooks duped, brainwashed and used a Sinhala Buddhist clergy sect to fulfill their sordid ambitions finally to end up in a Southern Nanthikandal.

Sort of true.. even though it hasn’t gone to that extent.

Keep ur fingers crossed… it’s gonna happen sooner than L8er.. as of now, it’s only a wolf wolf cry, when the wolf is at the door step.. it’s way too late…. It’s always better to be safe than sorry… hence I might agree with what Sally had said about muslims carrying arms.. Self defense is a crime?

You are just over reacting and you seem quite keen in violence and looks like you are eagerly looking for a chance to instigate violence. You are no different from LTTE-iers or BBS. People like you are the real threat to peace but fortunately people like you are a minority among SL Muslims. I thank the Almighty for that ;)

He has been released… Phew… we friends have been praying and had some religious get to-gether’s too. Check daily mirror online for further details.. and he may have been close to the president.. not anymore. IF, as u say he is as close, he wouldn’t have been arrested..in the first place.

President is playing podi tricks NOT politics…

          1. for the record, i am not Fair n Square. and you are no big celebrity as you may imgine to be, to be countered with multiple pseudonyms. Further, i take this opportunity to state clearly that “i do not agree to what Fair n Square had to say about advocating/agreeing to muslims taking up arms”. Neither do i think salley would have meant it, if that’s not the case then it’s a plain contradiction to his well-stated (all over youtube and elsewhere) opinion on the cessationist cause and harmony until April 20, 2013.
          2. just a while ago i read you only to have found me to have a resemblence to the writings of someone you were familiar with and you accused me of saying you suspecting someone that you knew in real life to hide behind a pseudonym to confront you? and i apologized for having gone a little overboard in my response in that P.S. truth is, i really don’t care who you are. and i had never even heard of your name before seeing it on one of these threads i replied to you about.
          3. it’s no big deal for me to run a script (legitimate, no hack) on colombo telegraph pages to compile all the comments you made on the articles related to azad salley and show you a pastebin page so that you yourself can reflect upon what a specimen you have turned out to become!
          4. You say BBS didn’t go to an extent of stirring voilence. Have you ever heard of an internet site called youtube? did you miss to read that the muslims in kandy spent nights in fear, besides the assurance given to them by the moderate sinhalese?
          5. i use a pseudonym that doesn’t refer to any real person. now i begin to wonder if you are really pathetic impersonator of another real person!

I thought you only had the problem of wild imagination but you seem to have a problem of comprehending as well. Dont try to put words into my mouth. I know who you are. Waste talking to cowards who hide behind different handles.

              Rifkha Roshanaara,

first you said i sound familia. i said i didn’t know your (scroll up). then you said i’m one of your dear FB friends. I clearly stated the same once again. I also refused your claim that I’m the same person as Fair n Squar. Even your name wasn’t known to me (never heard of one that sounds like the second part) before i saw your comments here. but you still say that you know who i am. why don’t you then state here who, in your wilder imaginations, i am, so that the real person that you suspect, if ever gets to know about it from here, will clarify things to you?

you accused me of wilder imaginations, i apologized. but tell me whose imagination is wilder?

if you think i have problems comprehending, why don’t you correct me by pointing out my errors? also noteworthy is that you gave silence in response to my request to back you claim about salley having attempted take advantage of the situation with supporting arguments, which is i will take as your bankruptcy on rationale.

since i find you to be keen on quoting from tamil cinema, let me quote you from a movie of the same actor that you previously quoted: “bravery/courage is the ability to fake the lack of fear” (not accurate translation though, link to the original in tamil: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R9PAbN_42Ek#t=28s ). From the calculated consequences, I know that the bravery, which you think you seem to exhibit by using a real name, isn’t going to be the same in my case as in yours, in terms of what it results in, because the ideas of both of us are not received in the same way by the men of power. After all, there is no such meaningful thing, even in the abstract sense, as bravery or courage. When the consequences are more deterministically unfavorable, dictated by the laws of physics, it’s pointless to take what is perceived to be a courageous stand. Hence, I believe me hiding behind a handle is justified. And I’m not ashamed of it. I like to make use of the technical/ practical provisions given to me by CT. If you have problems then you shouldn’t be commenting on a site where people are allowed to comment in anonymity. I refer you to a letter published here by Prof. Hoole on this matter. To further strengthen my argument I would like to remind you that we both are talking on a platform made available to us by a bunch of exiled journalists, whose identities i’m yet to learn about, not that i care of! (cowardice?)

go back and read the comments (with those internet winks of yours) you made here and under the other articles and see what anyone is to make of the person represented by your name.

it’s time you too pick up a pseudonym before further damaging the reputation, if any, of the real person that would have the name you go by here :D
